Beware of old reviews, it not even the same game. It has been well supported; there have been many fixes, improvements and free dlc was added to this game. If you want to explore and build in an open universe this is the game for you. If you want Metroid in space, move on. But in the end this has turned out to be the game that was advertised, just took a year to get there.

New updates to No Man's Sky is just a huge overhaul to the game play. However you may still suffer FPS drops as graphic needs more performance improvement but the game is no longer in that obscure stage which you are a confused space traveler. By adding more content to the game and more variation in planets, settlement system and a new Multiplayer system you can enjoy your time by yourself or with your friends in game.. however The game still lacking more constructed contents, better lore and main story. More better Combat system and probably more hostiles to get the game to more fascinating stage. As I mentioned FPS drop and performance is still plays a big issue into No Man's Sky and this might be very annoying for many users with older systems. But overall all this fixes and this bumpy road that Hello Games developers passed by worth more score than it got at 2016 and I can see this game have better future if the improvements still going on and the team do not give up and making more content to the game. Beautiful and fun game although multiplayer is more like you and your friends playing the same game then you playing together. Flying take some time to get used to and the tutorial is awful but the game is really worthy.

Perhaps it is the best redemption story in gaming, but its not like we have a completely different game now, NMS still feels boring and limited and I would rather play a game with a few planets that are custom made than explore quintillion of them here.

Unfortunately, the whole experience is shredded to pieces by bugs. So many, you can't play the game for tripping over them. Aspects of the game that lack polish or are downright clunky like parts of the UI (galaxy map probably the worse offender) can easily be forgiven. The sheer weight of bugs that actually hinder gameplay can't. Hello Games needs to really focus on these, as they more than negate the content and features updates they keep bringing out.

The game is getting better with each update. How much has come out this year. Most of all I like the study of systems and construction. In principle, if you discard some of the mechanics of the game, then this is the only thing you can do here, someone does not like sandboxes, someone does not understand what to do in this game at all. But there is also a plot and various secondary missions that will not let you get bored and help you figure out the game faster.

Build your base or even an entire settlement. No, I'm not talking about settlements that you can manage (yeah, and this appeared this year). I mean, you have the opportunity to build a large base, as if it were a small settlement. Build in the air (I have seen beautiful examples), underground, under water - yes, even all at once. You can equip your space cargo ship, fill it with interesting starships. Honestly, you can describe this game for a very long time. I'm glad I got to know her, it's a pity it was so late and I didn't find the early times (and no matter how dark they were).

It's improved a lot from what I was told were the early days of the game. The devs initially were overly ambitious, but they showed they did care, and that really says something for the integrity of the devs that they continue to add new content despite its initial crash and burn. Nowadays, it's a hella fun and interesting romp through space, exploring different planets, collecting resources, chilling out. It's like a 3D Starbound, really. Plenty of different ways to play the game, whether it's trade running, farming, hunting, questing, exploring, whatever really.

If I had to suggest features for a potential sequel: take some pages from Spore. Add the ability for players to make custom plants and animals and minerals and share them online for other people to discover. That would prevent biome-specific plants from starting to look repetitive, and further encourage exploring to see new, weird sights. Extra customization options for players along the lines of Skyrim would also let players really feel like their character is THEIR character. Adjustable proportion sliders and what-not would be very nice. No Man's Sky is a game that begs for a lot of assets, I think, even more than are already in the game, and I feel like having player-designed props would take the game that one step further.

    Also let people scrap multi-tools.

9/10, I'd probably normally only give 8 or so, but I have so much respect for the devs working so hard to correct their mistakes in an industry that would normally just push the game to the side and pretend it never existed.

I have to be honest: reviews on a constant changing game means my current review won't apply in the next, say, 6 months. Still, Hello Games has proved that it learned from its wrongings back in 2016. The game now has a very good crafting system, more stuff to explore, different worlds, machines and a solid multiplayer with a very interesting lore.

I honestly see more potential in the game, in regards to combat and exploration. When "villages" were announced, I thought we could see eventually some abandoned cities, or that developing your own village would be "easy" and quite productive. Instead it's just a timing system, over and over, and exploration hasn't changed much.

In regards to combat, the sentinels doesn't put much of a threat on you, so many of the combats upgrading you do in your multitool are essentially useless. Space combat could evolve to become something I could describe as Star-Wars-ish, instead, any battle you face has 6-12 ships maximum that can be easily beaten in normal difficulty.

It's a very fun game and, if it's your type of game - exploration, crafting and all - then you'll spend some hours here. If not, just go play other thing.

TL;DR - Worth a look. The developer is working overtime releasing good content for the game, and for a survival-lite Minecraft spin-off it's fun, engaging, and has a pretty good amount of non-linear content.

    +PROS+

    · Mechanically, the game is pretty good. Controls are solid and everything feels 'right'. Swapping between tools, and the adjacency system (though the latter is hardly explained) are pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it. Vehicles are fun to use and work very well in the game. Some people complain about the in-space combat but frankly I haven't had that many problems with it and it seems more like a personal problem.

    · It's really cool to look at. The visuals are just out of control.

    · The developer is actively releasing high quality content for the game, and seems to actually care about the sustainability of the title.

    -CONS-

    · The game struggles with its story - it's pretty cool but it drags on for an eternity and the rewards are pretty garbage.

    · Both PvE and PvP in this title are for the most part non-existent and otherwise complete and utter garbage. While the title seems to be purposefully centered around exploration, the lack of content encouraging players to interact with one another results in a game that's pretty boring to play with a group.

    · While new stuff is coming out, it still does suffer some of the same repetitive complaints that have plagued it in the past about lack of meaningful content, though it's getting much, much better.

I came on board shortly after the Atlas Rises expansion so missed most of the furore with it's initial release. By that stage, bases and vehicles had been introduced and, although the game was not bad, it still felt pretty empty. However, Hello Games have been pouring their heart and soul in to their creation and the game has benefitted greatly, along with it's player base. The game of then is a shadow of the game it is now.

With the release of their content update 'Expeditions' there is a reminder of just how far the game has come. Starting a new expedition, with basically nothing, you play back through all of the content again, fulfilling missions and reaching checkpoints. Even then, not everything that has been added to the game is included in the 'Expedition'.

Their latest update, as of writing this, is Prisms. It has added a graphical upgrade to the game to make better use of ray-tracing technology and the game just 'pops' now. I just wish I had a better rig to make full use of it all, but even with my old GTX it still looks very nice.

Hello Games has promised there is still much more to come this year. We've had three 'DLC' updates already and we're only 6 months in! So I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

ALL of this content, all 17 DLCs, have been added for free. There is no paid DLC model, as there is with most other games these days, everything they have added has been gratis. And these updates are not simply adding a couple of things here and there, these are updates that most other publishers would proudly package as a separate DLC and make you pay for!

The upshot is that I am so glad that I decided not to listen to the negative reviews and made the purchase when I did. I have had a front-row seat to the evolvement of a game that has come a long way and is destined to be so much more.

Hats off to you Hello Games, you have a fan for life here!

Its not a space sim, its not a shooter and its not even the same game it once was in 2016.
explore, collect, fight and explore. Its simple. i admit i does get boring sometimes and the loop needs more work, but as the Dev's have shown they can grow and change.
best to buy on sale still and will give a good 40-70 hours of gameplay if invested.

This is hard one. I did get a fair amount of fun out of it and I have been revisiting the game every other year. Unfortunately its still the ultimate underlying problem for me, which is
"So much to explore and so little to discover".
If you like playing games like e.g. minecraft (Which is also dislike) and rarely reach the point of asking yourself "Why the hell am I doing any of this"

But the game actually gives you no reason to play the game, except the things you want to accomplish in it.
(For me it was hunting down a specific space ship that I really liked). Once you reach that point, the whole game might become absolutely pointless.

This game when first released I would of gave it a 1. Yea it was just a boring game with a ton of problems. BUT since then Hello Games (The developer) has gone above and beyond to make this game fun. They have added so much content SO MUCH content that was promised and it's there now. I have traveled the universe with friends and it works well, able to connect directly to them join in help with a pirate fight, and help build their bases yes bases on planets that you can set as your own. traveled to places where people have become communities and built whole cities. It's fantastic and mysterious. The game has a lot more to offer with ships, weapons, alien types, NPC's, sentinel enemies, and even worlds. The game is now an 8 on my scale and it deserves it. I have fun hopping on every once in a while and exploring a new planet its just the type of game you can do that with. Its still not perfect but there really is not a game like it out there and exploring is one of the top things I enjoy.

    IMMERSION AND GAMEPLAY
    – The game overall is too unrealistic, too illogical and too childish. Just to mention some dumbest and most repulsive things in NMS: 1) your small backpack can contain more staff than the entire spacecraft; 2) similarly, some visually SMALL spacecrafts can fit more staff than BIGGER ones just because of so-called starship class and cargo upgrades; 3) in planet's ATMOSHERE your starship consumes fuel only to take off, but not during the flight (wtf?); 4) in space your starship can go backwards like a car, BUT this ONLY make's sense IF spaceship has the proper movable thrusters to reverse spaceship's direction, but starships in NMS DON'T.
    – Space is too unrealistic, too colorful and too cartoonish as well. Planets are always unrealistically close to each other. 95% of planets are very rich in life forms, which makes them soon enough boring and repetitive, as the procedural generation algorithm seems to work the same on most planets. In real life it's the opposite - rich planets are extremely rare and that's what makes them so precious and magnificent.
    – Stars (suns) in systems are just unreachable sprites. You cannot reach them and burn yourself down as in Elite Dangerous.
    – But guess what you CAN do in this game... You can breed, select and ride some stupid Spore-like animals. You can basically have any animal as your campanion which would pleasantly go after you in any harsh environment that require you to wear an exosuit (!) It's not No Man's S-K-Y now! It's a f*cking Spore.
    – Spaceship dogfights with pirates get boring and annoying pretty quickly, so you only want to end them asap.
    – I'm not saying NMS should be as realistic as Elite Dangerous but neither for 5-year-olds.

    MULTIPLAYER
    – Playing with friends is a nightmare, because you cannot invite them to the party from the menu. You should find them in person IN GAME. And it's not always easy to do, because even if you are at the same location, you are not always going to see each other. Moreover, it's easy to lose them from the party for no reason or when they get too far. Besides there is actually not much to do together. OK, there IS an option to join your friend's world instantly from the menu, but it never works in my case. Generally speaking, the game just wasn't meant to play together from the beginning, and that's very noticeable.
    – Developers could have created an awesome simulation in a living galaxy with real players, an economy, cohesive missions and so on... with a few main planets with some headquarters of guilds or something like that and so players could build their own cities. If someone wouldn't want to interact with other players, they could still fly away to some uninhabited far far away planet. Instead we have 256 galaxies with trillions boring procedurally generated planets with almost no chance finding another player. Players spread all over the worlds doing their senseless sh*t. What's the point in such multiplayer? None. There is only one way to randomly meet a real player and even many players - in Expeditions, because all players start on the same planet and have similar missions and routes, and that's great, but that's another problem...

    EXPEDITIONS
    – Expeditions are like small events with some new added staff and some kind of quests with rewards after completing them.
    – So, to me, expeditions are the most boring and pointless addons in my game experience ever. First of all, you have to start a new game in a new save to begin the expedition. So till now, you would have had 9 save games with some progress in each, but none complete with all the content the game provides (unless you have literally no other interests in life). No sense to me.
    – Expeditions bring no cohesive lore quests nor fun. Just random missions like find/kill 10 creatures, build some new random buildings which developers added or travel somewhere for no reason. That's exactly what Expeditions are in a nutshell. Ok, sometimes you get some cool rewards when you complete the expedition, but my God, how boring and pointless it is to make it to the end.

    SUMMARY
No Man's Sky had huge potential but unfortunately went in the wrong direction. The main problem the game has is there are too many unnecessary and half-done features, while important ones (as for the planets and cosmos exploration game) are too weak or not implemented at all. It's still a decent meditative sand-box time killer, rather for single player unfortunately, which gets quite repetitive (especially if you start new games because of new Expeditions). If you don't like Minecraft-like gameplay, this game is not for you at all. After 184 hours spent in the game, I have only one regret – this journey might have been much more interesting and epic.

Maybe it became a bit too easy to get rich by the way.

One thing really surprised me, I remembered what the game looked like, when I started it for the first time in 5 years, I spawned on a cold planet at night with a beautiful sky. The game really became beautiful.

A flawed game with great potential. The great sense of exploration is hampered by a lack of content - both in objects, animals, plants, and other humanoids. That said, the sheer ambition of the game is impressive, and although it falls short in nany ways, it is hard to find another space exploration settlement building game that is on this level.

I really wanted to love this game and I tried. I really tried. At the most this should be a $20-$30 Early Access game as it was released practically unplayable and with patches has made it playable for most people but it does not deliver the content expected of a $60 AAA title that they marketed the game as. The storyline is vague and easily lost. Yes it is a game of exploration but II really wanted to love this game and I tried. I really tried. Planets begin to feel too similar after awhile and the game becomes a lesson in grinding and jumping from planet to planet that begin to look carbon copy. I hope in the future they release updates (not paid DLC) that will bring the game's value up to match it's release price. If they continue to update and improve the game then I will change my review. In the current state of the game it's is not worth it's price but worth picking up if it goes on sale for under $20 and you don't mind the repetitiveness of mining for resources. After a couple patches the game runs even worse and has worse performance issues on my system when I can even get it to load. Expand

I know we are here to judge and give our rating and review to a certain title, but in this case I can't split the game itself from the company behind it. Just taking into consideration the sheer amount of lies Sean Murray managed to deliver to players worldwide should be enough to say no, since it can set a standard people get used to.

The game itself was not ready at all for sale,

The game itself was not ready at all for sale, should have undergone a longer development before release, all we got is an inventory managing/repetitive exploration game that could have really been "mind blowing" (cit.).
Sadly things didn't go this way, the game is preposterous and it's not worth the 60$ price tag at all, hell i would regret spending 20$ on what came out in the end.

I made my mission to find a specific looking ship, and for days kept on receiving the same old **** looking space bus ship, which is assinine even for a procedurarily generated game. I kid you not i visited maybe 30 planets and found the same red and white, boring shuttle. I mean't this is just not fun. Not even remotely. You'd say i'm wrong, im focusing too much on the negative, but i say NO, i'm not. There's just simply nothing else to do, but travel, mine and fly. Mining is tedious and unnecessary because money has no point or value, exploring has no point since there is no variety, you literally leave no impact on the universe apart from documenting. None. Not even at the end. You're just stuck in an endless loop of uninteresting planets, boring looking flora and fauna (IF you find a populated planet) and the occasional sentinels. Pirates may attack you, sometimes, but it's not fun. The game is, for lack of a better word, Dead. Not fun, not worth the money. I got duped, don't be like me. Expand

Clear case of developers lying to our faces again.

E3 and demos overstate quality and amount of content when it ends up only showing you 30 different plants and animals, all changed in minor ways.

This game is total poop. I didn't even buy this crap, I torrented it. It was a waste of bandwidth. This game offers u nothing, there's nothing to, the random monsters are all turd-like, and the devs lied about the whole game.

I didn't go into this game with unreal expectations, but this entire game can be summed up by the word 'tedium'. You start out on foot and have to repair your ship with resources that are minutes away on foot. That's a good primer for what to expect going forward, tedious repetitive tasks with underwhelming rewards. No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

It's partially broken, shallow, repetitive and aimless, but hang me, I still kind of love it. [Issue#255, p.56]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
