A technical marvel that runs badly even after the PC support patch and endless tuning.
A beautiful universe filled with countless wonders that are all pretty samey and interrupted by terrible game design and UI/UX.

It's a shame that a great idea like this game didn't work out. I hope the idea of generating random environments isn't abandoned, but the game itself is too shallow to even be considered a game.

As everyone else here remarks, all planets are the same, stuff has randomized shapes and colors but is like changing a model texture, it's still the same animal with different colors. All have runes, plants, animals, and the 4 types of bases. All you can find just by landing because they are repeated to boredom.

There are no barren, gas giants, ring planets, all stars are the same, every system has a bunch of planets all close together that for some reason don't rotate around the sun.

The ship's navigation is so terrible, specially when flying near the surface of a planet, that I cannot describe how frustrating it is.

This is not a game, it's only a tech demo, and the trailers are proof enough this is not what they promised.

This is one of the worst designed game. This is just another game crap, don't waste your money.

The game video performance is the worst, it actually runs worse than Arkham Knight.

Poorly executed game - with features missing from the game and with both performance problems and crashings occurring. it's so bad and boring that i wouldn't even recommend anyone pirating it.

A perfect example of what's wrong with the gaming industry today. So much has been shown and promised, so much hype built, and in the end a very poor execution is delivered terribly lacking in depth, story, features and mechanics. It is a niche game marketed as a mainstream AAA title.

Had some fun with the game despite this, but don't spend more than 15,- on it.

I am glad that the Steam refund system exists. I fell for the hype. I was so prepared to play this with friends and journey into the vast and expanded unknown. But instead I was given a different game on release.

you mine shiny red blobs of stone, which in return, doesnt do anything. yeah you can make parts for your ship, but there is no other crafting involved. you cant build a base, you cant build a ship, you cant really "craft" anything. as far as survival goes. you basically need to mine 1 recourse in the game to stay alive. you refill your O2 levels the same as recharging your gun. so whats even the point? If you want to call this game a survival crafting game, then you are putting it up against games like rust, minecraft, ark, etc. there are so many. and this doesnt even come close to those.

now if this game was sold as lets say "a looking at things adventure" then its only competition is pokemon snap. a hard game to beat, but hey..at least it would be honest.

COMBAT is so far off that i dont even want to go there. the only chance it has at this point is combat in space

SPACE COMBAT there pretty much isnt any. sure you get attacked by a pirate, but if you can get past the crappy UI of the game you can use that sweet ore you mined to recharge you shields and make yourself invincible.

overall this games only achievement is that a small group of people made it. its also colorful despite the 10 mete distance graininess. [i play on high on pc, im exaggerating] This game deserves title as worst game in history. I hope it surpasses E.T. and it gets buried on the moon. good try Hello Games, but you should have tried harder.

If you want a fairly chilled experience, minecraft in space, except with very little to mine and very little to build with what you've mined, then maybe its ok. I can see how others might enjoy the pure exploration aspect of the game, but it promised so much more that simply isn't there.

Frankly this game is a huge exercise in "bait and switch" marketing. Right up until release there were lots of features being talked about for the game that simply are not there and all I feel is a resounding sense of disappointment in this game.

At the time I write this, there are videos on the steam page for this game that I based my purchase decision on, which turn out to be demo content that was ripped from the game prior to release.

Part of the problem here of course is that the games industry journos were all taken in by NMS bait and switch tactics just the same as us, and not many of them have the stones to say "Actually that game we've been putting on the cover for months and whipping you all up into a frenzy over is actually only a 5/10 at best"

By this time, other game developers explain themselves or at least talk about a plan, what to expect in the near future, regarding adding content and making their game more enjoyable, but Hello Games don't even bother to write patch notes, let alone give a pulse sign on social media or their official website.
People who didn't refund and waiting patiently are left in the dark. The last patch (1.09) takes more away from the broken, but manageable gameplay there was, by patching up the "glitch" , which allowed people to stack similar items, even though people were asking for a function to stack similar items!! Unbelievable!
Others report, that their discoveries they made are wiped from their record, while some others complain about worse framerate.
At this point, the whole game is nothing more, but a buggy software to make screenshots. But first, make sure you get a 3rd party screenshot maker, because the game doesn't have one.
And at the end, there are better and cheaper (free) programs out there, that let's you take pretty screenshots of planets.
It's the most disappointing game of 2016 and the next worst game of 2016 is head and shoulder above this mess.

I gave it another 4 hours and I can't take anymore. There is no me in a infinite universe making my own decisions. It's land, farm, grind, sell, upgrade, lose half your ♥♥♥♥ to grind some more to upgrade to lose half your ♥♥♥♥ to grind some more to get to the core and have further disappointment. Nothing has changed or been different from hour one to 35.8 except for me upgrading my 3 inventories thereby removing all my good assets and making grind out farming to make the crap over again. Ship skins are the only difference as well with ships. Total disappointment through and through.

You would honestly have more enjoyment commiting Hari kari with a dull fish hook....

Edit: I forgot to mention again from my original post that I didn't care about the whole multiplayer thing. However, on Day 1 with 3 hours into game, I jumped to the next system and guess what I found? The entire system was already named by another player. Furthermore, the next 4 jumps were the same damn thing. The 4th jump actually had two different player named planets.

I didn't feel like this explorer in an infinite space for sure. So many promises and so many lies. Those supporting this crap will try to argue differently but the internet is your friend in this. You can do all the research you need to and find legitimate interviews with Sean up until release selling us a totally different gaming experience.

All the silence isn't helping matters either. Couldn't shut Sean up until the release of this steaming pile of dung and now nothing to say anywhere. If your plan is to confirm everyone's complaints and distrust in what you did, ignoring them is certainly the solution Sean (sarcasm off).

If the grinding for upgrades made any sense (have an exciting experience at the center of the galaxy) than this game would be a bit better. But the only thing happening at the center is that you're getting molyneuxed and have to start a new game +.

Not to speak of the stuff that has been cut out of the game, false marketing (video on store page does not correspond with the actual gameplay by a long shot), and 'promises' told by the lead developer of this game which never made it into the actual game.

At the moment there is a deafening silence when questions from players are being asked about the above situation.

Not acceptable imo but I can understand they can't say too much because of the agreement with Sony.

Imo as a indie developer you should not sell your 'soul' for money.

    Not worth the 60 euro's.

Game told me I need to make a hyperdrive. Aha! Yes! Hyperdrive! I'll get right to it. Apparantly I need a blabla resonator and antimatter.

The way you get a blabla resonator is you run and fly around several planets, talk to dozens of exactly the **** same copy & pasted alien, until one of them gives you a resonator. You do not know why, as you have no idea what they're saying, you just click dozens of them until they give you a resonator. Then you go talk to another few dozen of the same copy pasted alien to find antimatter. On the way, you find a ship 5X the size of yours, it has 16 inventory slots instead of 15, you swap ships, put your stuff in it, fix it, by pointing mining laser at many things, hours later you talked to dozens more aliens, you found antimatter, but now you're gonna go talk to another few dozen thesame **** alien because the blabla resonator was stuck in your old ship without any means to get it out.

This game is complete garbage, it's actually a scam. There's nothing to do - at all - Just point laser at **** mine it, throw it away & talk to thesame **** alien sitting on his ass in a metal hut doing nothing over and over and over again.

Being honest, when I first launched, I had a small hiccup with graphic-settings, where for some reason it had an issue when I went to restart the game, in switching to full-screen mode. Ended up having to edit the settings file in the Steam-dir to make it borderless windowed. Was able to play the game for, according to Steam, an 11 hour stretch, without any real issues and everything was excellent, fun, interesting, explorative... this is not only the definite game I've been wanting to play for ages... but even the game I've been dreaming of for the past 20 years. When I was a teenager and used to be more into coding, I used to have ideas of games that could just render, on the fly, procedural-code and functions, to make a gigantic game without much need of mammoth-space and resources to make it work... this is more or less exactly what I would have imagined... starting in space and working down to the planet-level, rather than the other way around.

Devs are already working on updates and additions to the game, which is GINORMOUS! To give an idea of the SCALE of this game: Before buying the game, I was SO excited for it... and found myself watching some PS4 gameplay videos on YouTube... kind of had a semi-idea of places to tighten up on that I'd see other players slip on, or stuff they'd pass by... or so I kind of thought. I had noticed in the journal-screen or whatever, that a lot of planets gave a few hundred thousand units, or more, if you discovered everything on the planet. Well, the planet I started on was awesome... which again, after the above-listed tiny graphics issue I had at first and flipping through some options, I found that if you exited and restarted at the very beginning you can re-renderer everything about the planet you start on. Since I was actually squared away, launched the game, and ended up on a freezing snowing planet... yeah, having grown up most my earlier years in the snow, I was good on that, restarted... and the planet I have now is lush, it's pretty, has neon-green grass with purple-ish and orange like landscape, the creatures are neat looking, the drones are there but only attack if provoked (and sometimes go into attack mode when I mine, which is odd), and findings are plentiful.

This is where the scale comes into play, because I'm not sure if the amount of stuff per planet is semi-set or if it's procedural, but OMG, the first planet I'm on is SO HUGE with SO MUCH TO DO! As I said above, I noticed in videos that if a planet is completed there's a big pay day, and having an enjoyment of being a completionist, I thought I might start off completing the first planet or two. WOW! I can tell you now, the whole 11.5hrs listed up to this point has all been spent on THE FIRST PLANET! I have my ship repaired and ready to shoot into space... but I wanted to try to get everything on the first planet to have the few hundred thousands of credits starter-funds going into the cosmos; which I'm coming to find, with the found junk/sell-loot [like daggers and cubes and such] sold in a decent amount, can make just as many units, and perhaps for that reason, I'm feeling a nudge to move on with the game and maybe come back later, BUT... and this is the critical part...

There's SO MUCH TO FIND... this game is an EXPLORER'S DREAM come TRUE! On just the first planet I've managed to upgrade my ship to a slightly nicer upgrade (another slot, a few more pre-installed functions/weapons) that was found in "downed ship" or whatever map-marker. I've also upgraded my multi-tool TWICE, and I think it's a 12-slot now (looks like an MP5), with a bunch of cool mods, that I crafted onto it. Also learned a TON of tool mods and ship mod (+several language words)... still can't access some of the materials yet to build them... but looking forward to huge mutli-slotted tools/ships that can be loaded to the teeth (it kind of reminds me a slight bit of Kingdom Hearts and the Gummi Ship with its upgrades & such).

But seriously, after 11.5 hours, I'm STILL finding new stuff, on THE SAME STARTER PLANET! And I've barely made, in comparsion I'd imagine, a reasonable dent in the surface of the planet... when I think about how far I've traveled and what I've seen... I can't say that I can recall going in one direction, then realize coming back around the other side as in going all the way around... the planets are HUGE!!!! Which is a GREAT THING! This game is a UNIVERSE-SIMULATOR if there ever was one!!!

From what I've seen in the videos, there are space-stations, there are "space bars" it'd seem, and everything in between... for any that grew up on the classic-game-series "Space Quest" by the *original* Sierra On-Line you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to try this, and be patient with it.

The crafting mechanics is rudimentary, the survival aspect is annoying and pointless and the exploration is boring once you visit few planets and start to see the assets repeat. Interaction with the world around you is virtually non-existent. Well you can shoot rocks but that's about it. Occasionally you can also shoot a droid or a pirate ship in space. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is fun until shortly after you get your ship fixed. You finally realize you are about to start a loop that is not what you had hoped for or expected. You only barely control your ship. On planets you can't skim the ground (or hit it). Landing is automated on planet and entering space stations. You can explore and discover creatures, make friends with them, but it's really only fun a few times. On top of that, the end goal to reach the center will only reward you with starting the game all over again, needing to fix a ship to get off the planet. No cool cut scene, not even credits. I wanted to love this game and admit I did have some fun with it, but it shouldn't have a AAA price. Expand

Not the game they promised. Not the game they posted videos of. Not worth $60.

It's also not that bad of a game. But not worth a AAA-game pricetag, no matter how much hype they added.

18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets. Each populated by one of THREE races. And it will be populated, in the same pattern as every other planet. And every planet is a palette shift of colors and shapes.

Yes, there are so many planets you and all your friends will never see them all but you wouldn't want to as they all play within the same range of experience, the only difference between a hot planet and a radioactive one (or a toxic or frozen for that matter) is the level of shielding you have determining how long you can stay outside, while on-planet there's not much to do but trade, learn words, pick up resources have a brief skirmish and scram, there's no building to do and no wars to fight. The Fun-Police sentinels are ineffectual on land as and in space so are just a mild annoyance.

The odd space 'battle' may kick off as you jump into a new system (too many times) but it doesn't matter if they're ignored, there's no data on who's fighting or why and getting involved will net you the same amount of respect as giving 10 iron to lazy trader.

The flora and fauna are sort of interesting at first, but have no depth to them outside being passive or aggro and their freaky appearances which break suspension of disbelief in some combinations. Hop to about 16 planets and you've seen pretty much every variation of plant and most of the 'animal parts' that go to making up the non-sentient life. The sentient life consists of three races Beakface, Daft Punk and Brute who are just there to trade and teach you words, there's no sense of them inhabiting any world other than in their outposts, which, paradoxically, are on EVERY planet. There's no gas giants or any non-solid worlds, or even strange suns either. There is *some* variation in the terrain however, the occasional world will have giant cubes of land protruding from the surface or floating islands but again, that, with the minimal plant, animal and mineral variation slapped on top is literally all there is to them.

The one good thing about this game is the fabled "Take-off from one world land on another" with no cut-scenes or loading which has been a holy grail of gaming for so long it's painful to see it done so flimsily. There is nothing satisfying about space combat, it feels like plastic kids toys whipping around.

Some parts look pretty but the anti-aliasing is horrific all over.

The 'ending' (just cheat your way to the core if you must see it, you'll be.... less incensed that way) is exactly the kind of slap in the face that paying the slightest heed to hype will net you. Anyone defending it either must be being paid or is in such depths of delusion that they're a danger to their own mental health and yours.

Play this game with no expectations while listening to your favourite podcasts and you might just come away with a slightly favourable view of it, then skip to the end and realise it'd just an epic waste of time getting there honestly.

There's no reward for finishing the journey, in fact it takes stuff away when you do.
There's no real need to leave the starting systems as 95% of the time the system will have everything you need, the other 5% you can simply buy it off the market.
There's no progression, the game is the same from start to when you simply quit (only difference is more bag space).
You can learn an entire language for 20 carbon (and by the time you're finished you can turn that 20 carbon into 1000s or more if you have the space lol).
There's so much more to add to whats wrong but by now you should get the idea... it's trash; wait for a 75% off sale.

I've been to 5-6 planets and all outposts look exactly the same even though they are occupied by different races, why?! All space stations I've been to (3) are identically inside and there is no sense of "life" at the stations (even X Rebirth have more exiting stations).

I have to mention the ship controls, terrible! For instance, you can't fly close to a planet's surface pinpointing your landing location, the game won't let you. I feel that the developers have taken away basic flight freedom. Also, when I fly and hit space stations I simple bounce off, wtf!

The execution however is just lackluster, rushed or lazy, it's a console port with zero efforts going into the PC version.

After every graphic setting change you need to restart the game, the intro sequence already stutters and you have microstutters on a lot of actions in the game, textures load very late in a weird way, the resolution was poorly upscaled from the PS4 resolution and it makes the game look kinda blurry, the performance is just not acceptable for a PC game with these 2010 graphics.

Flying in this game feels like riding one of those automatic toy cars in front of shopping malls, you insert a coin and the thing is moving somehow, but only a kid would believe it is really steering and controlling the vehicle. You can't crash your ship, you can't fly close to the ground, you can't hit any rocks or buildings, you can't land on your own, it's an automated sequence, basically the game holds your hand the whole time you're flying, which completely kills the flying immersion for me.

Then the riddles, you have to solve them sometimes when unlocking new waypoints or targets. They're pretty much on 1st or 2nd grade level, it's always the same pattern. It's a number sequence that either adds, deducts or multiplies by 1,2,3,4,6,7.. or the other way round.

Ships, buildings and space stations in an infinite universe, you would expect them to look interesting and different, right? Well, they don't. There are like 5-6 different ship designs in the game ( with slight variations like color or inventory slots ) and all buildings and space stations look absolutely identical, at least from the inside. In an infinite universe with countless different intelligent species, this just doesn't make any sense.

A side effect of this, no planet you are exploring is actually unexplored, you are never the first one. There are buildings, ships, sentinels and structures on every planet or moon, nothing is unexplored.

My biggest gripe with this game is the flat-out lying about Multiplayer, that is just unacceptable. Sean Murray promised multiple times, that you can meet other players, turns out you can't. But not only did he lie about this aspect of the game, he simply refuses to address it, like some dodgy politician being in the business for 50+ years.

He lied about multiplayer, he lied about the formula they're using for the procedural generation, he lied about the engine they're using, he lied about some other missing features and he also lied to the people when showing the trailers for the game.

The game has been data mined already, and it turns out, that everything in the trailer was designed and scripted, there was no procedural generation at all.

There are times, where I have some joy with this game, the atmosphere of some planets is really relaxing, but this should have been a 10$ game, I regret not refunding this for this price.

Once you visited a building or a tradepost on a planet, its almost impossible to find it back later.

The same goes for the planets you visit. Once you leave them and warp to another place, you just cant get back to them unless you manually search all nearby systems/stars for the name (assuming you wrote it down)

I mean, what were the devs thinking when they developed the game?? navigate you'r way through the universe, have highly advanced equipment and Faster-Than-Light speed, but not even something basic as a map ??

It does have potential and with some effort it could be a great game.

At first discovering new planets and not so great looking creatures is fun, but because the game has very little fun to offer besides that it wears off quickly, very quickly.

Mining and crafting is a frustrated experience due to the fact that once you have upgraded you ship and multitool and you buy or find a new one you have to start all over again. Upgrade modules can't be transferred to new ships and multitools. This is what you spend your time on for 90% on this game.
So, you crafted 3 upgrades for your hyperdrive for your current ship, but now you see a 30 slot ship instead of your 28 slot you already got? Get ready to mine those rare materials that are hard to find all over again or otherwise you won't be able to grind to get to that max inventory space ship you want in the end. Because of this punishment for having done all the work to get better modules getting a new ship is a terrible experience.

The combat on-foot and in space is painfully mediocre. Don't get your hopes up about the "epic" space combat, spawning a couple of pirates every once in a while is hardly epic.

The "game" has got a very thin story and is hardly engaging.

18 quintillion planets? Who cares if there is so little fun to be had.

I confess, I was one of those idiots that preordered this game and honestly I feel pretty stupid right now. The only positive is that I got instantly cured from preordering ever again. Don't make the same mistake as me.

And: I didn't follow all the coverage on the game prior to the release. I did read an announcement, and based on that, I put it on my wishlist. So I won't go into "they promised this and that and this and these and none of it is in game", because frankly, I didn't know they had promised so many things.

    So here we go:

The best way to describe this game? Either "a mile wide and an inch deep" or "so much potential, yet they dropped the ball".

Don't get me wrong, the basic idea, the concept, is GREAT. Unfortunately, you can't judge a game just on the basic idea if the game turns out to be that dull and repetitive and simply shallow. Especially not at such a prize and with that much marketing behind it.

Here is the problem: The performance is barely acceptable. My PC ran Witcher 3, GTAV, Fallout 4, Arkham Knight, Xcom 2 and several other rather recent releases without a problem. This game is giving me quite a few FPS-issues.
The controls feel wonky and imprecise, with a weird delay, especially since everything is done by "holding e", even clicking through menus. The menus themselves, whether it's the inventory or the options, handles horribly. I also find the inventory and how to "handle" it, crafting, transferring incredibly odd, or non-intuitive.

Let's get to the point though. How important is it that the game boasts it offers trillions of procedually generated worlds, when they are all so incredibly dull and alike and repetive.
After about 10-12 planets, you start to see the patterns... the animals are all generated from some kind of toybox with different parts. They have a very limited range of sounds.
On each of the planets, you find all the same materials (iron etc.). So you make it to another planet which looks so similar or just as dull as the last, and has the exact same resources laying around on the floor. Each of them has sentinels too, who will attack you if they catch you using your mining laser to mine resources. Each of those planets, some more, some less.
It was fun to visit the first 3-4 planets to see what was new. Unfortunately, nothing much is. Some planets are a bit prettier, but most are dull, just with a different hue on them.
Exploring isn't that much fun as you constantly have to refuel your equipment (with the same resources you find on the floor, the same stuff you use to build stuff, the same stuff you feed animals). You go and find the same things on all those planets: Sentinels, trading posts, camps, monoliths where you learn a few words of alien language, some scattered containers (how unexplored are these worlds if you find crashed ships, camps, containers everywhere?!)

You can analyze animals eventually, and upload info on them for money. None of this feels like an achievement. Yeah, I get it, the game creates those animals and planets and plants, but it just feels dull, shallow, not like some achievement. Oh look, yet another randomly named random animal, put together from similar pieces as those animals you went to six planets ago.

The inventory is horrible. You constantly have to shuffle it around, as the gear you use takes up spaces of your inventory. If you loot some relics you might want to sell, but also try to look for some resources to craft, good luck. Especially if you get attacked by a sentinel, kill it, and the loot is forced into your inventory.
You need a pass key for certain doors and chests (there are three different ones), which then takes up another inventory space.

Yes, you can increase your space. But it's just so dull and old-fashioned that space is so limited at first. I dont know how many hours I have played, vbut I still haven't increased my inventory space yet, and spent quite some time discarding stuff just to make room, and yes, the cargo hold of my ship was full as well, and no, I was not being a packrat.

This inventory management, to me, adds NOTHING to the game. Well, it adds frustration and cringing. But it's not..challenging or compelling, it just feels way dated and unnecessary, same as having to constantly refuel your gear or not overheat your lasers.

You occasionally run into aliens. You land on big bases and alas, ONE ALIEN. You land on a planet, find a trading post, and again, ONE of them. It all just feels empty and totally unfinished. Where do they sleep? What do they do but stand around all day or sit in a chair?

It all feels empty, cold, sterile, incredibly artificial. And the game itself... it feels like either a tech demo or an indie release by a small group of guys who had a great idea, yet lack the time, manpower and tech to flesh it out, fill it with content, life, variety.
I liked the basic idea, I wanted to like the game, but was bored very very early on, and feel hardly any motivation to start up the game again anytime soon.

It's disappointing. The optimization is horrible enough to justify the score on its own but unfortunately the game is also boring as it gets. The optimization is horrible enough to justify the score on its own but unfortunately the game is also boring as it gets. Now. before you come to any conclusion that I was over hyped and it naturally didn't meet my expectations because I was "blinded", let me inform you that I was probably the least hyped person in this board since I knew the size of the game, which was so advertised from day 1, would also be its death sentence because it would be randomly generated, probably boring after no more than 10 hours, and ultimately a lacking sandbox.

Over the years the devs started talking about multiplayer existing in the game, the ability to side with multiple factions and take part in wars that can change an entire solar system completely, a fully dynamic solar system where the planets and their moons orbit as they would in real life so that the background "won't simply be a drawn picture". Unfortunately, that's exactly the case. Because of that, planets that would originally be hotter when near the sun or frozen when further away from it are now randomly generated as well, and there's a possibility that you can find planets extremely similar to each other in the same solar system.

And to make things worse, they used a game running the old engine which had all promised features included, as shown in E3s, merely weeks before the game was releasing to show gameplay. This is just fraud. They also stopped mentioning multiplayer (or just dodged the question when it came up) shortly before release, and it turns out it doesn't even exist. Not yet anyway.

I wish I was making this up but there is someone on reddit who has gathered every single promise that was made from the announcement of the game till shortly before its release and proved that everything was just lies, with video proof on every claim.

I guess if you like running around with 10 fps gathering resources in a painfully simliar fashion on each planet, this game is for you.

It's with a heavy heart that I write this review, because I really wanted this game to blow my expectations out of the water. Sadly, it did the exact opposite:

    Exploration:
The exploration is nice at the beginning of the game. The sense of wonder and scale of it is nice at first, but it starts dropping off really fast after your first couple of planets. I noticed duplicated things within my first 3 hours of playing, which was pretty disappointing in all honesty (I expected it to happen at some point but not that fast). The stations and outposts littered over the planet start to get dull due to the fact that they're pretty copy paste between the assets and aliens that inhabit them. Although each planet had plenty of things on it, the things you could actually do felt as if they were stretched way too thin. There aren't even any local missions you can do for credits even though there are so many stations and outposts you visit. Speaking of credits....

Trading: I've played alot of Space Games, they are an absolute favorite of mine. A key part of a space game is the trading and for No Mans Sky...it gets about as complex as looking at what color an item is. Its abysmal in my opinion, especially when they kept raving about how in-depth and intricate it would be (just like half the **** they said was going to be cool). The whole system doesn't really work for trading because of the vastness of everything. Usually if I'm trading in a space game I would try to find the best trade route for a commodity, but since there are quintillions of planets that can't really happen and its more of just a "sell whatever **** you dont really want to make room for other **** trading style. By far the most surprising (and mind boggling) thing was the absolute disregard for the regulation of credits. I made 2 MILLION CREDITS ON MY FIRST PLANET, WHAT THE ACTUAL **** This wasn't even that hard, I just found all of these relics that serve no other use except to be sold, and they were worth 15,000-55,000 credits each. Find those a couple of times and you'd be rolling around in a solid gold spaceship with spinners and underglow.

Crafting: The crafting system is pretty standard, just collect certain materials and combine them with others to make parts and combine those parts and other materials to make things and so on and so forth. Not much to go on about here
Inventory and UI: The UI tries to be clean but suffers from the "Clean lines but too much **** on my screen" dilemma that happens to many games. They try to cram everything into and it just ruins the point of the minimalist design to it. Interacting with things is also an absolutely peeving experience, since you have to click and hold for something to happen as opposed to just clicking. It's something small that over time begins to just get annoying. The inventory itself (although upgradable) feels way too small. The fact that upgrades for your Ship and Exo-suit take up inventory spaces in those things makes absolutely no sense to me, especially when you're first starting out and want to collect every single thing in sight.

Flying/Combat: Another big disappointment for me, because its so watered down and simplified that its honestly frustrating. Flying is awful, like its on-rails but the rails are rusted out. I can't even turn my head to look around at the landscape or for approaching enemies. The turns feel stiff and not respective of most physics since I can tilt my nose down and still be going forward while watching my ship "burn". The combat is.....well it doesn't really feel like combat. You know how you're supposed to fear death in survival games? Like its the end all be all? Not here, I don't fear anything in this game. Not giant cliffs when I run out of jetpack fuel, not enemy ships and most certainly not these Wheatly looking mother****ers that patrol the planet. I left my computer while in combat with one of these things for five minutes and came back to only just being notified that my shield had dropped. It's a joke, and for a Survival/Exploration game its insulting.

Performance: Check on Steam just to see how many people can't even launch the game (Michael Aoun being one of them) because the devs didn't add a compatibility to the architecture of the game. On my rig, the game runs fine one moment and then the frames drop to dog****, and go back up again. This happens without any reasons, whether there's thousands of things around me or one. The FPS itself locks itself to either 30 or 60 randomly and on occasion drops it like its hot to a nice 14. As far as programming goes, its about as well put together as Pokemon GO (Fix your **** Niantic).
Overall, the game is playable and has redeeming qualities that can make it fun for a first time and a little while after. But after the amount of hype and promises that surrounded it ended up just being a series of 5-yard line fumbles and blatant lies, I can't recommend purchasing this game

This game is simply overpriced and was falsely advertised. It's an exploration game through and through, there is no action worth playing, there is no storyline worth following, there are no interesting choices, and even the crafting and resource gathering element falls flat on its face in comparison to that of Minecraft, or even the very basic crafting in Skyrim and Fallout 4. My big problem with this game is that you begin to wonder why you're even playing it, there's nothing to drive the plot in any way, even a game like Minecraft, which has no real plot, will captivate you so much more than No Man's Sky. At least in Minecraft you can admire what you've built, you can show it off to your friends, in No Man's Sky there is no progression, when you get a new ship it's just a new ship, it has no soul no character.

In conclusion this game is worth 15$ at the most, 60 is just an outrageous price for such a simple and, unfortunately, boring game

An obviously incomplete game. If this had launched as early access for $15-$20 I could see rating it around a 6 or 7. At $60, it's a rip off. It's a great explorer sim but is no where near polished enough from a user experience or performance perspective to sell for full AAA prices yet. Again, should have launched in early access.

Issues I encountered in 3 hours of play time:
Corrupted save because I alt-tabbed out.
General confusion about what I was doing because the in game tutorial is so bad and the UI is not intuitive.
Have to restart to change settings. If you do this before saving the first time, you lose your progress and starting planet.
    Ship flying control is poor.

Keeping up with news on this game after launch has been less than promising as well. Already there are mentions of paid DLC in the future (maybe distant future, but still, finish the game first). Lots of promises and continued expectations by the community that the game will be finished AFTER launch. Temper your expectations for this game. Daily player numbers are dropping very fast according to tracking sites suggesting that this game does not have staying power.

Many, many features have been cut and you are left with a very dull game. Also, the dev originally promised no paid DLC. Well, he changed his mind. Now that could happen even though they haven't been able to fulfill their orginal pitch. $60 for an unfinished game lacking many promised features and they want more? No thanks. On top of the lazy procedural generation nonsense that all looks the same after only an hour or so of gameplay, the developers just seemed to have shot themselves in the foot at every key decision in the game. If they had kept the number of planets down significantly and actually designed the planets themselves, or used interesting templates that could have some elements of procedural generation in them, the game would be much more enjoyable. If player interaction was actually a thing that frequently happens and not something that only a small percent of the player base ever experiences, the game would be much more enjoyable. If there was actual progression in the game itself, the game would be much more enjoyable. However, Hello Games (the developers of No Man's Sky) decided that they knew what was best for the player base and chose to not do any of these things. -To much promised, very little given. The creators promised so much and we get bits and pieces here and there. But overall they took a page from Peter Molyneux and gave us what can only be seen as a lite version of the original promised game.

-Repetitive is the name of the game. Everything about this game reeks of repetition. There is supposed to be literally billions upon billions of planets. Until you visit 20-30 of them. Then you see patterns emerge in how this spawn/are generated. On top of that, you do the same things over, and over, and over again. I'd honestly score the game higher if they officially changed the name to Repetition Sim 2016.

-Are we alone in the universe? The answer currently is yes. Because out of all of the broken promises this is the biggest. You cannot interact with people as they don't technically exist in your game. Even if they are on your planet, you can't see or find them essentially making this an offline experience.

-Multiverse theory. This is more of a pun and a poke. 10s of billions of planets and I have visited 34 as of this review. Despite my woes and over all meh feeling, once the patterns emerged, I tried my best to find a planet truly unique. And as far as I can tell. It doesn't exist. Technically, out of the amount of planets there has to be one or two of them. But after no lifing the game for days on end. Hell if I can find it.

Overall. The game isn't terrible it just doesn't feel like it's the game I paid for. Similarly to how people can exist on your planet but you can't do anything with them. This game exists and I can't do hardly anything that was promised to me over the last couple of years. It doesn't feel like it's actually finished. This feels like a mid way Alpha version. The basics exist and that's about it. On top of that, the creator decided to flipflop in a matter of a week from saying "No dlc, you paid for the game. The content should be free." to saying "Future content will probably cost something." If it were in my power, I'd get a refund and have zero regrets about it at this point.

To briefly state the one positive, It is a nice looking game, even if it's so laggy that you can barely access the menu or orient your character at all. That's why it gets a 2 rather than a 1 or 0.

Firstly, there's the foolishness that's by design. You walk so slowly, and the sprint controls don't seem to work as far as I can tell. The loading screen forces you to sit through a 5ish minute starry background screensaver, as if it weren't even a game and is in fact a throwback to Windows 98, -each and every time- you start up the cursed thing, even when I already saved the game. Mining gets tedious and repetitive after about 2 minutes.

Secondly, there are plenty of issues that seem to be unintended consequences of the slipshod gaming engine design. The latest patch (as of GOG 2.3.0.5) does little to address any of its performance issues. It drags so slowly through lag-ridden menus that you barely have the ability to figure out how to craft, much less make something of use in the barren sands of some unpronounceable planet that, to try and say, would sound like it was named by a deranged Swedish Mad Libber. I have a fairly capable desktop with i7 core, 8 GB of RAM, and no problem running most contemporary video games on high or medium graphics settings. This game would not respond when I turned everything to the -minimum- settings, and even after I did, there seemed to be very little of use to do besides.

Whoever is giving this travesty a positive or mixed score just simply isn't telling the truth. That anyone could think to charge someone $60 for this experiment is simply obscene.

If you adjust this setting, the game runs smoothly on full settings.

I don't own a beast computer, but the simplest problem solving (changing fps cap to 60 to match monitor) fixed it, so I can run the game on full settings with a i7 6700K and a GTX 970. It really isn't that hard, and the game runs 60fps, MAX SETTINGS.

The game itself, is a little underwealming. There is a dangerous habit forming among developers to release an unfiinished game at full AAA price, with the promise of adding content later in updates and free DLC's, and this game is no exception. Following the lead of games like Overwatch and Starwars Battlefront, this game has launched with a interesting premise, but little content to ween people in for the long haul. The planets are interesting, and while environments vary slightly, the biggest change on each planet is usually the colour scheme. The animals are weird, but in the end, quite forgettable. There isn't really any standout features from the 30+ planets I have already visited.

The computer port is another feature that has let down users. The HUD is horrendous, and difficult to get the hang of. Weird keys have been used for important features, such as the letter X being used instead of scrolling on the mouse for changing weapons by default. There is also no tutorial to explain a lot of the keys, or what needs to be done at all in the game. I understand that the game is meant to be "thrown in the deepend with a crash on a random planet", but the fact that the game doesn't explain how to charge life support seems like a fatal flaw for new users.

Overall the game is interesting, but the PC port is very poor, and the graphics extremely disappointing considering what our PC's are capable of producing. The controls and HUD is disappointing, there is very little instruction, and the game play is unfinished, and repetitive.

They misrepresented what the game would be in order to justify the $60 price tag. That misrepresentation is going to land them in legal troubles... them AND Sony.

This game had enormous potential. If the developer had kept their mouth shut instead of spewing lie after lie AND the game had been shipped at a reasonable price, say $20 - $30, then they'd be fine.

But they did lie, and they did ship an incomplete game at a triple A game price. Inexcusable.

There is a ton of content ripped out that you'll find on the subreddit titled "Where is the NMS we sold on" and you'll see all the lies. The gameplay is just collecting resources to fuel your ship to fly to another planet to do the same thing over again. No purpose. Pointless. This game is the biggest let down for 2016 so far. Here is hoping for Star Citizen but even then I have my reservations. Fool me once.... Expand

Other than the misleading nature of the game it also runs like garbage, and I run a gtx Titan. I can't believe they had the audacity to sell this at full price. I generally feel like I have been swindled. Boooooo

For those who forget, I invite you to watch all his past interview. He played very well with the fans and the media, but I hope that people will remember this.

With that being said, let's talk about the game. I just played a farming demo simulation game with no end game goal except " go to the center of the universe where nothing happen". Gathering resources to have ships with a bigger inventory.. Great. And that's all guys. The combat on the ground is terrible and very rare. On space ? I had better sensation of space combat in Star wars Rogue Squadron II... 15 years ago. I mean it's the worst combat experience I've had for years. You guys from Hello Games never looked at other games ? You've played Candy Crush for all this years? There is plenty of games (at 20$) you could 've take inspiration from, with not that much development to do.

Who was the game designer of the game, on which feature he worked on? It's great to farm rocks and trees but for 60$ really?. Seriously, you should've worked only on Joe Danger and mobile games. This game is full of bad design choice.

The UX/UI of the game is terrible, it's just a bad adaptation of Destiny interface and interaction. One example : "Hold" a key for ALL interactions in the game? Really ?? Do you even know why we use "hold" interactions at the beginning? Go read some books about User Experience. Even in the video settings ? Did you even played on day on PC? It's crazy how some things are just really bad executed in this game.
The design of the game is bad and that's all. No features in the game show the contrary.

Anyway, go back on developing mobile games. It better suits your abilities. You disrespect all the players who trusted you and I'm glad I wasn't that naive to give you money to play this game.
Sean Murray, you stolen money from people. You should be ashamed of what you did to promote your **** game. But yeah, now you don't care, with your tech demo, mission accomplished, you've earned enough money.

PS : I give 1 for the sound designed. The only skilled worker on your company.

    - no settlements crammed together having only a few hundred meters between them

It plays well and is fun, quickly becoming addictive. the environment can be bland at times, but the creatures and plants are very original. Some attack you and they all do seem to pose as a resource. The crafting system is quite generic , where you select from a menu - minecraft had the most intuitive and interesting crafting system.

The style of the game, from space to the plants are interesting - the music and sound also fits it , given it is chilled and you can expect to pump hours into the game, just like minecraft.

After playing, as I enjoyed Minecraft, I have decided I will buy it when I can – which I did not expect to do previously.

Ultimately just dull, a survival sandbox without the lego aspect of Minecraft, your only concern is keeping your various power bars full which you do by mining environmental detritus. unfortunately what you need is so common that the management aspect simply turns into busy work, you land, get out your ship, scan, walk less than 50 meters, mine what you need then fly off again.

The space environment is hugely insulting to any astronomer, stars are unreachable light sources on the skybox shining on a tight cluster of a few haphazard planets, I wish the systems did interact dynamically as every one of them I visited would have had a spectacular collision, Worse still is every square kilometer of space is packed with the asteroidal junk you need to mine to power your ship popping in as it crosses the draw distance

The main selling point of this is the random generation and it's infinite possibilities, but that infinity is always constrained, visually you may be able to get an infinite number of animals or space freighters, but functionally and gameplay wise they are all identical to each other, just a wandering resource node carrying common materials,

Planets tend to be differentiated only by whatever garish colour palette the RNG drew out of a hat and every station or building you encounter is drawn from an extremely limited pool, I only ever saw one station layout.

All in all I'd say stay away, the devs clearly had huge hopes for their baby but they haven't delivered on them.

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]
