If not for the very lowered score, I would give the game solid 8, but I really want to boost the score, because I think that the game improved a lot since the beginning. There are still bugs, and the animation is far worse than old chapters in Mass Effect saga, but it really is solid game, story-wise, gameplay-wise, and with really pretty graphics. But I don't regret playing and finishing the game at all, that was a grand adventure with, suprisingly, the most satysfying ending from all other Mass Effects. After finishing I felt that the story really is complete, and the future games would be a welcome suprise more than a necessity. But, big minus is that I had to install a mod created by players to fix some of the issues with the game, including quests not showing up. It really is sad that this game could be the next great Mass Effect, but was so damaged at the beginning, that it's really difficult to appreciate it now. Because there is a gigantic potential, that can be felt throuought the game, and it really is very fun. Expand

    ***PROs***

    + Nice graphics.
+ Exploring is kinda fun especially in new, faster Mako-like vehicle.
+ (Some) nice voice acting (namely all the Ryders, Cora, etc).
+ Nice music (especially main theme).
+ Intriguing mysterious connection to original trilogy story arc.
    + Decent gunfight engine.
+ Autosave tends to do a somewhat decent job (strictly in that it saves regularly).
+ Some surprise treats for fans of the original series.
+ Ability to switch activate powers on the fly.
    + Independent power cooldowns.
+ Full keyboard customization (yeah, I know, it's 2017 and there *are* games out there that reserve certain keys that end up screwing you over).
+ Native controller support (tested with XBOX ONE wireless controller).

    ***CONs***

    - DENUVO! Yuck!
    - Half the people are British accented... It's like Harry f'ing Potter in space.
    - A lot of British English words and phrases (like they wanted to rub it in that they went all British).
    - Dull antagonist factions.
    - Dull non-Milky-way ally faction.
    - Dull filler tasks/missions make up the majority of the game (often needing you to constantly go back and forth across the galaxy).
    - Unskippable cutscenes when landing on planets (normally not an issue but given the back and forth nature of the side missions, it's excruciating).
    - Buggy AF (getting stuck, autosave issues, random dialog spurting, invisible objects/people, mission bugs, etc).
    - No QuickSave/QuickLoad!
    - Can't control squad-mate powers in battle.
    - Can't customize squad-mate loadout.
    - Mission/assignment journal is a disorganized mess.
    - Too many random location tasks which require a ridiculous amount of wandering around to finish.
    - Too few biotic primer powers (several key signature powers from original trilogy are gone).
    - Everything is f'ing "balanced" (serious impedance to leveling up player/weapons/powers/etc).
    - No renegade/paragon (often wanna sound tough but lack of dialog choice makes you sound like a complete wimp). Some dialog choice "labels" are misleading and makes things even worse.
    - I have no problem with gay love interests existing in this game but every other dialog option with certain male characters had the "heart" (romance) icon next to it and this made me feel quite uncomfortable and always suspicious if I'm leading down some homosexual path with some of the characters, especially with some who you meet that are either, um, somewhat "emotional" or just plain give off a gay vibe.
    - Bioware won't be releasing any DLCs or even bug-fixing patches for this game! Completely abandoned.
    - Unsatisfying final boss fight, though the lead up to it is great.
    - My favorite pistol is missing (Arc Pistol)... okay, I understand it's not fair to include this in the list but I needed to get it off my chest!

I'd give the game a 7/10, possibly higher if they had released good DLCs for it, but those first three points on the cons list really p*** me off, so it gets a 1/10.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a game that receives a lot of flack from players and critics alike. Many people say the game is buggy, or it doesn't look good, or the animations are weird. I, however, did not listen to critics and went into the game with an open mind.

Let's start off with the facial animations. Are they wonky? Yes. Do they break the gaming experience? Most of the time, no.

The main character where they get in the way is Addison on the Nexus, but that's the bad egg of the bunch. The vast majority of the facial expressions are expressive, depending on the species, it's a fantastic use of animations.

Game play: The most fluid in the series. No more clunk, no more funk. The game play allows multiple ways to play, and feels light and aggressive. It's rich(er) crafting system allows the player to create weaponry from various different arsenals. The game play, leveling, purchasing, choices, and crafting cause Mass Effect Andromeda to be the most RPG game of the series, beating the original.

Story: The story is a fantastic fresh idea of facing off against a new alien race. Are there flaws? Obviously. I've nitpicked several minor details but overall it's a great story-line.

Atmosphere: Absolutely beautiful. Every planet has its own unique set of wildlife, challenges, and atmospheres. Many people either quit out on the weak starting planet, or the overdrawn ice planet, which is a fair point, those planets do drag on... While in my personal opinion, Havarl, the best planet, doesn't get enough screen time. Either way, the game, especially after lighting patches, has beautiful planets and rich atmospheres.

The game had many issues when it released, but I believe this was EA to blame for rushing the release. Despite the flaws, Bioware did their best to fix the issues, beautify the faces, intensify the lighting, increase carry weight, and improve strike force features within the game.

Overall, this game is a mid-high 8 and marks itself as my favorite in the series so far. The game gets too much hate, and I definitely do recommend playing it.

I played through this game 5 or-so times and always discovered new things. The gameplay is great and a lot of fun and I also liked the story and would've loved to buy the DLC that were originally planned. What a bummer they never got to see the light of day.

the game is great. it has cool new gameplay combat and explorations mechanics. and finally, we can see both genders of all aliens races (at least those that are currently in andromeda). though I am not happy with the excuse they found to not show half of the milky way galaxy species, as well as children. facial designs and animations could have been better. the game needed more polish.the game is great. it has cool new gameplay combat and explorations mechanics. and finally, we can see both genders of all aliens races (at least those that are currently in andromeda). though I am not happy with the excuse they found to not show half of the milky way galaxy species, as well as children. facial designs and animations could have been better. the game needed more polish.

there are two big disappointments though. the biggest one is that EA did not release DLCs to continue important stories, and instead choose to put them in the novels. also, there needed to be more content connecting to the original trilogy.

the second issue is the music. the original trilogy is full of wonderfully memorable tracks. this game did not have even one. all the music is forgettable.

the open worlds and exploration are great, though a deeper lore and more memorable minor characters would have been appreciated. still, this game set a lot of material to exploit in future games. it got a somewhat sloppy start, but this game is by no means bad.

It took a lot of fire for a number of different reasons including the lack of facial expressions, however, I find most of the stories compelling, the characters feel real with quirks and they just seemed to come alive. This game is an unappreciated masterpiece and might be the best of the series, with elements of Mass Effect 1 through 3 in game play, crafting, and online missions. Expand

Combat also it's repetitive...more action and less tactical play (control your squadmates is complicated)...so you will just use the same three powers for the entire game.
Rpg (or morals) aspects of the game is , also, reducted ...and most of your choices during missions or dialogues have little to no conseguences.
Good thing about this game are Krogans that have an important part of the plot and an important companion that shred some light on this race

Bad ratings probably mostly due the glitches when it was released (which were patched in the meantime). I played it with a new computer in 2020 and it's absolutely AMAZING. 70hs to finish it and worth every minute.

This abortion of a game is presumably what you get when a corporation like EA puts people with degrees in "Women's Studies" and "African-American Studies" in charge of game development teams. The game is steeped in political correctness, and it prevents me from achieving the sort of immersion into the game I enjoyed in the first three Mass Effect games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mass Effect Andromeda had so much potential and they screw it up. The facial animations is crap, the engine they used is crap for this kind of game, the quests feel repetitive and boring. The world design is boring and feels empty of anything actually interesting. I somehow forced myself to finish this game. I did enjoy the game play somewhat... when it doesn't glitch me into something. I especially love it when the characters just start T-Posing. I had hoped that many things would be rectified in patches and in the quarian ark DLC that was hinted at the end of the game (which was scrapped), but no. I would not buy this, as support for single player has ended a long time ago and it is still trash.

In summary the game is big, some characters are interesting, and I love the combat system. The new species were also interesting. the combat, i love. However, there are too many cons for me to recommend this game.

But other than that I really enjoyed the game (finished it 3 times on PC and 3 times on PS4). And to be honest, tell me one single RPG game that gives you this feeling of space travel. I mean you can park the ship in a nebula, near a black hole, in an asteroid field or in orbit around a planet nad just look outside and see it in all its beauty.
And also name me a single scifi RPG that has been released since Andromeda. Only two come to my mind, Technomancer and Elex. And while both are excellent games (yes, I played both), none of them is about a space travel.

    Mass Effect veteran here.
    Loved the game.
The series getting back to its Mass Effect 1 roots, being more of an RPG and open-world game, with focus on exploration, and combat where you're more free to walk around and not so glued to cover.
Glitches and animations by far not as bad as people make 'em sound and fixed with the patches.

+ Plenty of options when it comes to customization your playstyle, with talents/abilities and extensive weapon upgrade/crafting system

+ Good crew...not as good as ME2/ME3, but still has that "Bioware magic" to it. Vectra, Pee Bee, Jaal...are excellent additions, on par with best in series.

+ Some very good quests ( mostly companion related), Ryder backstory, and good main story moments

    + Galaxy map

    - The game still has some significant performance/glitches issues. I've played it years after release, while it's nothing too offensive, it's noticeable game came out in a rough state

    - Too big for it's own good...bit too many "fetch quests", Kadara and Elaaden feel a bit rushed.

    - NPC models, some scenes and facial animations ( memes are absolutely overblown and while it's better than in most rpgs, it's not on par with previous games)

    - Plays it bit "too safe" with setting/lore

Overall: very good game, that almost reaches "classic" status.

I will not argue that this game did not have and does not have any problems. Even stupid problems, like a terrible animation of faces at the beginning of the release. But if you play this game as some separate story, which it is, still they even left for another galaxy... That is a good game.
There is a good general idea and plot. Pleasant and interesting game-play. Beautiful graphics and surroundings. Not really boring craft, like in many other games with crafting. And I incredibly liked everything that was connected with ancient civilization and its influence on the terraforming of planets. And yes, I also liked to flirt with the Azari girl... I was only disappointed, perhaps, with the main enemy boss. He was boring and inexpressive. Even with architects it was more interesting to fight than with this "dummy".

    1) I do not feel anything -_- i barely pass the first 2h of gameplay and it is so flat, i am bored out of my skull! Combats are cool but empty, you do not feel the impact. Story is here but pfff. And i do not get anything who push me forward. I remember the fantastic ME3 intro, at the start of ME3 i was in WOOOWWW mode but there, i am just surprisely totally bored.

    2) I can't playing more than 40 minutes or i get a very VERY hard headaches
I reach 45 years old, i play video games all my life and i NEVER get this.
The fact you get Zoom, zoom, unzoom, zoom, unzoom each time you are targeting , scanning, changing weapons or fire at something is simply WAY WAY to hard and the FOV change each time you are targeting, changing weapon, or scan and the FOV depend on what weapons you are using ...

i do not even imagine playing like that in gow or any other tps i will be sick like hell in a middle of any horde or any raid. Then i just look into the internet but BIOWARE do not add any options in 2 years to separate the FOVs or even any options to DO NOT zoom.

    so to be clear:
you are walking with a very large FOV,
you take your weapon you are zooming,
you are aiming more zoom atm you see nothing and you already get 3 zooms.
You want to scan something unzoom,
you are not getting any more weapons unzoom again.

In less than 30 seconds you get 5 to 6 zoom and 3 unzoom Wowww -_0
and becasue you have no minimap you need to open the map often what gives you more zoom and more animations for noting. sorry but my head can't !!!
i just get the will to kill myself, puke and get the worst headaches of history playing any video games.

Imagine something like that happen when you take a pen, drop the pen, write 1 letter with the pen, change the pen, retake another pen ... you will become crazy. so i will not play this game anymore because after 3 monstruous headheach i understand the devs are totaly stupids and do not even bother what are correct HUDs and UIs and want to kill us all by headaches ... i think. (That's a new one)

i am desapointed, i never quit a game for something like that, i try every solution i can find
it is very simple there is no options to avoid 200 zoom / unzoom in 1h
then ... mass effect andromeda thx but > go to trashcan after 1h36 minutes and 3 headaches.
    What a waste.

You can tell that this game was developed by a studio that has very little experience and time.

Also, the graphics and face animations, after the patches, were okay for me. Sometimes I really liked the ruins and other buildings and environments they created - although there was a bit too much repetition, such as in the enemies.

My main disappointment was how they made NO DLC's for the game. And they really really DID need to have made at least one DLC to resolve a certain aspect of the plot that I won't give away (spoiler) - but people who played the game will know what I mean.

It's as if Bioware said "Oh geezz - a lot of people don't like the game., so to heck with them and let's just abandon the game and #$#!!! doing any DLC!".

This is not a way to treat your loyal customers Bioware! Also, and this is coming from someone who is pretty open-minded - they really need to tone down that SJW stuff which is just pissing people off. Just my two cents :) !

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
    - huge new galaxy with generally improved graphics;
    - enhanced combat (best of the four games thus far in action)

    Cons:
    - bland protagonist with basically no angle or trait in character (particularly comparing to Shepard);
    - stale facial expressions (subpar even comparing to the very first game--which is 11 years old);
    - too much filler content for quests (like a few fellow reviewers said, DAI in space, which basically takes up 2/3 of the actual playtime, and that's with guide. Without guide...it may take up to 4/5 of the playtime)
    - political correctness all over the place (many decisions are forced with compromises, and quite a number of them don't even make sense)
    - lack of choice (it is understandable that the Pathfinder needs to be diplomatic and this half is written well, but there is basically no counterpart...no choice of showing even the slightest bit of aggression)

Basically, the combat deserves a score of 85+ as it is entertaining and exciting, although the auto cover system makes the control lacking at times, but it is definitely better than the OT.

The story, however, deserves no more than 40, and that's being generous.

For a space opera, conflicts need to be present all over the place, particularly given that the original trilogy has established that the Milky Way Council species have internal conflicts themselves. While it is possible to explain that the selection process of the Initiative eliminates most of that, it is logically highly unlikely for the Initiative to truly devoid them of their individuality, which in ME Andromeda appears all but eliminated. So, the Asari are no longer diplomatic, the Turians are not disciplined, the Salarians not hyperactive and pressing, and the Krogans no longer rough around the edges. That's already failing the OT world view.

And there's the problem with conflicts. The exiles are established "right out of the gate" with almost minimal background stories to how and why they are expunged. The story provided by the Nexus doesn't cover enough, and there's basically no polarity displayed between the two. Decisions are mostly middle-ground, and they differentiate little even if displayed as polarized. The decisions, while they can be understood to have long term influences, the Initiative is set up over the course of around a year, and some decisions should have effects by the end of the game, such as setting up the outpost for military purposes, or having the exiles ruled by different leaders, yet none of them has any impact whatsoever in game.

Then there's the problem with the protagonist and his crew. The Ryders are established to be competitive and good-humoured, and not much else is present up to the point when Alec dies. The side of competition, however, is never displayed properly. With competitiveness usually comes with a natural display of discipline and authority, particularly given that the twins are military in background, yet both Ryders displayed a complete lack of assertion when it comes to both. Liam and Peebee falling out of order in both of their loyalty missions, yet they get to stick around due to a lack of choice, and the Ryders are written too accepting to realise that there is a line never to be crossed, and the choice of displaying anger at both companions---just gets Ryder condescended in reverse. Basically, every companion gets to act like a Spectre while the Ryders are less condescending than the Council. There is no accountability in the Pathfinder team and the leader doesn't act like one.

In general, if you've played the original trilogy, ME Andromeda just feels wrong. There's almost no complexity, no friction, no conflict, no moral dilemma, no consequences.

There is a possible way to save this game however, which is for ME Andromeda to have a sequel on part with Mass Effect 2, since a lot of the plot holes and personality absences can be filled and explained in its sequel. For instance, building up a background for Jaardan, Angaran, Kett and Remnant, giving more choice over team selection, linking decisions with consequences reflected in MEA 2, et cetera. After all, the background in Andromeda is roughly set, and the world is definitely expandable.

    Basically:
If you want to hitch a joyride of action, this game is playable and rightly so, and even replayable.
If you want to see a space opera BioWare delivered with SWKOTOR and Mass Effect 1-3, this game is a bare pass.
If you want to enjoy an odyssey-style story like Mass Effect 2 exploded (which this game actually sets its main storyline in similar fashion), this game fails pathetically both in the countdown and in the climax.

It succeeds to deliver in action, but fails pathetically in story, particularly by RPG standards, even more so by BioWare RPG standards.

Was this game perfect? Absolutely not, far from it. The graphics were kinda dated, the story was a little lack luster, and the animations were absolutely dreadful and an absolute disgrace for any developer who dares call themselves AAA.
But there were a ton of new mechanics, new species of aliens, and fun times to be had in this game. The story was still somewhat captivating and I genuinely had fun with it.
However, Bioware has fallen under the choking grip of the overly SJW and greedy EA and this showed for this game.
The graphics were dated and looked like they were a few years old at launch because EA had to cut corners for maximum profit. The animations were some of the worst done this decade and whoever the lead animator was needs to be fired and never let back into the gaming industry because they clearly either dont have a degree in animation, the ambition to make a good game, or eyes to see how dreadful their work was. Also if you are looking to enjoy the romances in this game as much as in the past 3, you will be greatly disappointed. If you are looking to date the guy companions, you wont be too sad for they seemed somewhat fleshed out and enjoyable. But anyone looking to romance a female companion, good luck buddy. None of them are aesthetically pleasing, and only one has an enjoyable personality.

Overall, If i had known what i know now, I would still buy this game. However, it has next to no replay value.

So I read all the negative reviews on launch, which is why I bought the game heavily discounted just before xmas 2018. I have now completed the main story and a lot of the side missions, having played 129 hours in total.

From the reviews, there seemed to be a couple of major problems.

One was the 'uglification' of characters as part of a sinister SJW plot aiming to rob geeks of their only access to good looking ***. I never played with the template heroes in ME games, so I created my own pathfinder and didnt use the generic Sarah Ryder so I was not subjected to that experience. I did however notice that it was very difficult to create a character that didnt entice the vomit reflex on sight. But I managed. Also seems like a lot of the NPCs hade quite a lot of extra charm in the chest area - which should mean the "sjw" masters didnt have total control over the process.

Onther reported issue were the bugs, the faulty animations and when functioning - poor facial animations. I experienced no game breaking bugs. I never saw a major animation glitch. I guess these issues were fixed at some point after launch. What I did however see were really bad facial animations (see the plethora of memes). Some characters look like they are severey depressed or had a lobotomy. Others look completely fine, but then they start talking an the lip movements look like a bad joke. I think they must have corrected some of these animations, because at times its hardly noticeable - but then there are whole segments where the animations look retarded. Most of the time you can ignore it. Something that is truly annoying though are the body animations - you dont feel like youre controlling a human being - but more like a bird with a human head. With the aliens this was not a problem for me, maybe they had bird like ancestors. But humans evolved from apes, not birds.

Another purported problem was the writing - the storyline and questing. Dialog choices are usually fine but most of the time unecessary since they have little impact on the story. Sometimes you make choices that will have an impact but mostly not. What I actually liked was the romancing (i did Peebee) which added an additional spice and served to make the story a bit more immersive. In general the story is pretty generic. Big bad wants to kill everyone because of reasons and power. You are a chosen person with special abilities that has to stop big bad because humanity and stuff. Its fine, but probably something anyone with a basic understanding of sci fi / fantasy could concoct.

What is less fine are the fetch/kill evil rando dude quests required before you can plant bases on the plantes. Although some of these do make sense, a lot of them feel repetetive and boring. All in all the writing feels sub par.

The vaults are are basically just different maps with the same elements, enemies and other assets. The planets are actually quite diefferen from each other which I liked. The user map is atrocious though. Especially on that jungle planet that I mentally blocked from memory. Crafting is mostly pointless and boring. The inventory system is messy and feels poorly constructed.

Ok so why do I give this game a 6, and not a 3 or 4? Well, for one after ME1-3 there are no other sci fi space opera games of this magnitude out there. At this point in time there are cash grabbing boring as **** looter-shooters and "battle royale" (is a game mode not a genre ppl!!! ffs.) games, dumb mobile-esque games, loot box filled "games as a service" bull etc. The spiritual replacement of ME is apparently Anthem, which seems to be totally broken on launch.

So in the current gaming climate, were you to ask me if you should get ME andromeda or one of the currrent crappy tripple A scam titles - yes my advice is get ME Andromeda. The story isnt epic, but its fine. The planets are sufficiently diverse. Some story lines are fun. The combat is actually nice. It is single player, so you dont have to play with immersion breaking morons and you dont have to buy loot boxes to have the full experience.

Firstly, I wanted to give this game more of a 7.5, but I didn't want it to fall into the yellow and decided on an 8 instead.

Secondly, BioWare, if you're reading this, I hope that you consider releasing some sort of anything for Andromeda at some point, or a new game connected to it.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a great game. It's got flaws, no doubt. It could really do well with even just one piece of DLC (for reasons I won't spoil). And I'm saying this as someone who started playing Mass Effect way back when Mass Effect 1 was the only ME game we had to play. I'm saying this as someone who has been through the original trilogy over and over, ad infinitum. I'm saying this as someone who has totally recognized that BioWare has always had funky animations in every single game they've released since ME1 and Dragon Age.

When I came into Andromeda, the animations were really the last thing I even focused on or concentrated on. They were there, I could see them, but never at any point did it ever seem so drastic that it warranted an internet mob. I truly believe the aforementioned mob was less inspired by BioWare animations and more about the fact that there were LGBTQ+ themes in this game. That there was more than one trans person in this game. That even Asari can be heard speaking about gender and how they present themselves, and these are themes strewn all over the game (themes that make sense, especially in a future where humanity has overcome most of their prejudices against other human beings). I really feel this is the biggest reason that (we'll just call them 'a certain crowd') a certain crowd latched onto ME:A as a point of major grievance. Because it finally deviated from the kind of cowardly ways of the original trilogy where, for example, Mass Effect 2 you had what I would consider a cyberpunk/space masterpiece ... except it was extremely straight and a huge deviation from romantic themes we had only just had in the first iteration of the game (although Tali should not have even remotely stayed straight, just something I wanted to throw out there).

All that aside, all my personal speculation about why this game got bombed by mobs of people, I can finally actually talk about the game.

ME:A starts out with a real hard scifi kind of feel to it. A little different than the trilogy, but the Mass Effect feeling is there, and there's also a new feeling about it. You're thrust 600 years into the future and immediately, everything's going wrong. But then you get a ship, and it is an amazing ship. It's not the Normandy, but it's just as nice and shiny as Shepard's. It took me a while to get used to Ryder, but going back in for a replay, I find myself walking around the ship, just the ship and it makes me feel like this universe really deserves to continue, that it deserves to be here. It's a feeling I can barely describe, but it's a feeling that I don't ever really get outside of the Mass Effect series.

It almost feels like I'm back home, despite my feelings about not being able to be Shepard ever again (or at least for now).

But then you go out and you explore and while the worlds I think are quite a bit bigger than they need to be, I think molding the ME universe into a massive expanse is the right direction for the game. Because unless BioWare turns this franchise into an MMO and gives us some kind of infinitely persistent world, I have nowhere else to go to soak up this much Mass Effect, and Andromeda has a lot of Mass Effect to drink in.

I also come to ME for the romance though, and if someone's telling you they don't, there's a 50/50 chance they're lying to you. Full-stop. The entire Mass Effect trilogy was an on-going romance between my Shepard and Liara, and I expected nothing less from Andromeda. So of course, I met Peebee, or space girlfriend number two. In regards to romance, BioWare really went all out in Andromeda. I think (not entirely sure because I have a bad memory for specifics) every single person on your ship is romancable, and not only that, but there are even romance-inclined NPCs on the Nexus. So there's a ton of romance to be had in this iteration.

The combat in ME:A is the best its ever been in the entire series, and the addition of profiles and jump boosts just makes it even cooler. On top of that, two years later, I'm still playing its multiplayer companion, and so are a ton of other people.

This is already really long, but I recommend ME:A if you haven't played it. My only gripe is that the Asari could use more unique faces and it desperately needs BioWare to return with some DLC. That's it. Those are the only real issues here. Take a look at the critic scores versus the review bombing that happened on the user score side and you'll quickly realize that there's an ulterior motive behind the red.

Mass Effect Andromeda is what happens when you replace most of your Dev-team with low skill crazed faminists who want to promote their political agenda over writing a good story and good characters. They completely destroyed this franchise in one go. Such a shame, I really love ME1-3

Mass Effect andromeda’s only major flaw was that it was written with an expectation that a sequel was guaranteed.

The gameplay was smoother than ever.

The story was setting up for something amazing. And the characters personal growth was so varied (not everyone was growing into a better soldier they each had a unique story). It was exciting to see where everyone went.

Bought the game late as it was on sale. Loved the story and premise as it expands on the game's universe, but HATE the gameplay. Jetpack/dodge concept seemed like a good idea until you realize how poorly it incorporates due to buggy controls + glitchy edge-grabs (that can kill you).

I read up on the story behind its development and it kinda made sense. Some good ideas + bad dead-line

All in all, quit a disappointment for the brand, and one of the few games I'd not consider worth completing.

Some games you want to explore every nook and cranny inch by inch. They encourage you to scan every piece of lore, and to go looking for hidden quests and treasures. This game forces you do to all of this as the core gameplay, none of it is optional. And there's nothing of merit behind it to make it interesting.

In order to unlock the story-quest dungeons you have to find glyphs hidden behind the environment. You do this by activating your scanner (which slows your walking speed) and pointing it at every polygon in the area. They outsourced huge chunks of content to different teams, so there's no rhyme or reason to where these glyphs may be hidden. Once you find all of the glyphs in an area, you have to play sudoku with them to advance.

The scanner is also how you uncover codex entries, this game's version of lore. If you walk very close to an object, it will vibrate your controller (if you're using one) to tell you to scan something nearby. Or you can slowly walk around with the scanner up looking at everything. You must do this to earn research points. You need research points to develop the blueprints for your armor and equipment.

As you drive around the worlds, a thing will pop up on your screen and tell you that you can mine resources. You must drive back and forth very slowly, watching a little meter, until you can fire off a mining probe. Then you have to do it again until the region is fully exploited. You need to harvest these resources to build your blueprints.

Every time you want to move around the map between planets, you have to leave and arrive three times, each one a different version of an unskippable cut scene.

Say you're on Base X, and you have a quest to run and talk to someone on Planet Yawn. You dutifully walk to your ship. It asks if you want to leave, you say yes. You watch an unskippable cut scene of your ship leaving, that takes about 30 seconds. Then you see Base X in the close up view on the galaxy map.

You back out of that to the system view. It shows you an unskippable cutscene of your view zooming out. Not like "woosh you're zoomed out now". Like "wooshsweermubububub", ten seconds of movement. Then you zoom out again (several more seconds of wooshing views) to the sector map and pick a new area.

Then when you click the "let's gooo already" button, it zooms all the way back into the close-up view of the planet your at and shows a wooshing first person cinematic of zooming out all over again. Next is about ten seconds of seizure inducing "warp" travel (or whatever they call it, I couldn't be bothered with reading any of the lore) before you arrive at the next system.

Then more wooshing and zooming when you arrive, before you get the new system view. Click and woosh zoom again and you can finally select the planet you want to go to. Then it takes you back to the maxed out system view and wooshes you back into the planet view.

Except it doesn't just go to the planet. It zooms waaay into the planet, to mimic the image from the opening splash screen. Then zooms back out a little bit. Then you have to scan around the planet to find a landing spot, then you watch a cutscene of your ship flying down to the planet.

Moving from one planet to another takes about three minutes, with maybe ten seconds of button pressing. Almost all of it waiting and watching these three separate attempts at leaving and arriving.

    Every. Single. Time.

And there are a lot of quests that are just "Hey, you. Run and talk to this person and come back here real quick." And honestly, those are better than the actual quests.

So many quests have no icons on the map. Find all of this certain type of thing, find these random hickeys at static camps, locate all of the computers, the usual filler that dozens of games manage to make somewhat interesting this game makes boring and vaguely irritating. Like a relative who won't take your hints about how little you want to hear their story.

None of the boxes you can open are visible on the map until you buy an upgrade to your character later in the game. (And even then, only a few special chests show up.) And the worst part is that the containers can be any object in the game. That rock you didn't bother to walk up to and inspect? That was your boss reward treasure. That box-looking thing that had loot in it the last time you saw it? Not a box this time, it's in the potted plant.

And the whole time your party members are telling you how awesome the whole experience is. Shouting encouragement to remind you that yes, this is the game and you are enjoying it. A classic case of tell, don't show.

Because, some games are hard to like. You have to struggle past the flaws to the hidden qualities beneath that. This game doesn't like the people who play it. It's not even worthy of hating, because that would require a level of engagement and an emotional response that it's simply too tedious and bland to generate.

A now common "miss" from studio that was beloved not too long ago. Mass Effect: Andromeda is Bioware's reboot of the Mass Effect franchise, and a rather half-baked attempt at trying to forge new frontiers in an already adored franchise. Much like Dragon Age: Inquisition, however, this entry fails to recapture the brilliance that Bioware became famous for.

Absent is the immersive writing and lovable characters. Gone are the moments that make your heart pound and your eyes water. Forgotten are memorable questlines and the general sense of tension and danger when trying to complete a task. Andromeda offers little in terms of gripping world-building, having to, instead, lean heavily on its predecessors. Which is shame considering that its setting had so much potential for new and exciting lore to be explored.

Moving past the most critical features of storytelling, one runs into the general signs of lack of polish: models that are copy-pasted and overall horrendous looking, animations that are memeable in their faulty mechanics, and dialogue lines that are both poorly thought-out and poorly delivered.

That said, there is some good. The environments are beautiful, if a bit badly optimized. Driving is 100% better than any Mako or Hammerhead. The combat is a bit too fast to be my cup of tea, but there are some interesting features such as new powers, combos, and the profile system which allows for a wide range of playstyles to approach every situation from.

The development of Mass Effect: Andromeda is a sad story of trying to do too much with too little (a very well written article from Kotaku describes the hardships of the dev team), and unfortunately, it shows. Andromeda may bring more to the table in terms of graphics and combat, but it fails at what everyone wanted it to be most: a engaging story that has you hooked from the get-go and leaves you salivating for more by the time the credits play.

One can only hope that Bioware's next foray into the Mass Effect universe will see a return to a world that not only looks and plays nice but feels rich and alive as well.

(Bugisoft, Bugthesda, etc)

I had Sam and 2 NPC's and an audio log all talking at once. No idea who said what.

In conversations with multiple NPC's sometimes you can't even see who's speaking the camera angle is so bad (yes I know you can move the camera but still can't find the speaker).
Graphics yoyo from amazing to amateur.
What went wrong with the designing of people in this game?
Their bodies and faces are a mess, like we went back 10 years maybe even further.
I went up to a guy on the Nexus and it was like playstation 2 level of quality! WTF

The planets all feel the same, only difference is sand becomes snow becomes grass.
Buildings and Kett sites are just reused over and over.
Mining with the nomad is painful and annoying.

The space travel was nice for a minute then became a chore.
The whole pick a planet then you travel towards it, skip the long boring travel part, zoom in and then zoom out and repeat.

The MAP! oh ma gawd the map. The map sucks on so many levels where to even begin.
Whoever designed it needs fired into a black hole.
It's the worst map design I have ever seen in any game ever with zero exaggeration.
The icon symbols all look alike, the blue layout is horrible to look at, you go into some caves or buildings and there is no map at all.
Also press 'M' for map then you have to press 'escape' twice to get out of it, who thought that was a good idea?
Can't use M again to exit the map and return to where I was, no that would be too easy.
The compass sucks btw, it's confusing as hell so you click the map more than you would if you had a minimap which ends up with you needing to press 'escape' constantly.

Companions are boring, besides Drack and Peebee who I liked, the rest bored me to death.

The inventory sucks, really hate the scroll wheel when trying to see what I've researched or picked up and when trying to compare items is just annoying. I want bring items up with both stats together. Plus when shopping I can't see if the weapon I'm buying is better than the one I have equipped.
And why the hell can I pick up a weapon but can't equip it until I go to a load out screen?
    What a load of crap.

The looting is terrible too, what's the problem with leaving corpses on the ground after combat? Trying to see those tiny circle loot displays when you killed the thing from a distance is rubbish.
At least if he was still lying there afterwards I could see him and go check for loot.
Also looting just becomes a habit more than a necessity, I can't recall a single time I looted an item and thought 'cool, need this'.

The little nodes for minerals, who worked on that? Probably the map person.
You scan the node and does the node disappear or change? No it stays the exact same way before you arrive so when you return in future and see it you think 'did I get that one?' and yes you did and the next one and the next one and so on. Major annoyance.

The mission/quests lay out is bad too, you revisit planets over and over.
I handed in a quest on the Nexus then reboarded the Tempest and immediately got a email to return to the Nexus! F******************CK!
This happened multiple times, leave a planet, talk to someone on the Tempest reland on exact same planet.

I could go on and on, conversions are weird at times, badly written too.
Oh before I forget, why is the main character given any dialogue choices since all of them tend to answer the same way.
There is no paragon/renegade system, I can't make my toon be super nice or a total **** so why even bother with the options.
There is loads of times where the options pop up to answer someone and you have two answers to pick from and both mean the exact same thing!
    Whats the point?
The good stuff, combat is fun ermmm sometimes the visuals of planets are nice but that's about it. I got this game for £9 on deal, I'm so glad I didn't pay full price or I'd be super pissed.

Andromeda has an issue with character models, that cannot be denied. However if you can see past this, the story is great and it offers adventures in the ME universe that are surely to keep you entertained for at least 80 hs. ME: Andromeda has gotten a lot of bad press. While I don't know how it shipped in 2017, I do know how it is now, and I have to say, I like it.

To start, there is the story. Right form the getgo, there is an atmosphere of positivity and possibility, that stems from pioneering. By moving away from the reaper storyline, we also move away from a constant sense of impending doom. I think that suits the games theme of exploration very well. I am a big fan of the ME trillogy, but having Shepard do relatively unimportant assignments, while there were vastly more urgent matters to attend to, allways kind of bugged me. This time around, the story takes a more subtle and relaxed course, allowing you to immerse into the smaller story arcs as well.

The voice-acting of the female Ryder (I haven't played the male yet) is realy convincing and immersive. Often she would have subtle and surprising responses that help to create the sense that this is someone with a personality and emotional depth.
You can choose the type of response, divided in a number of possibilities, like emotional, professional, casual or logical etc. helping you to be the Ryder you can get behind.
Sure, the facial animation is not up to todays standards, but the the graphical quality make up for that, and it rarely bothers me, if at all.

The other characters on the team don't seem to be popular among a lot of reviewers, but I think they are convincing. I guess it's the same for real people, it's down to personal tastes.

The new galaxy is a big place with a lot of room to gather materials, build settlements, meet new people etc. What bothered me a bit is that this is a whole other galaxy, yet everything looks en acts very familiar. The other species are all too humanlike, who also use very recognisable technoligy. Too me it feels a but unlikely, but like in ME 1 to 3, I can look past that.

As many others have said: the combat is great! The lessons from the trillogy have clearly been learned. To add to that, you now have a jetpack mechanic, that allows you to jump higher and make horizontal leaps. The combat now takes place in three dimensions and the environment matches that. I was pleasantly surprised when I jumped onto a building to escape from a large creature, only to find that it jumped right after me, forcing me to stay mobile. Combat has become even more dynamic and is a realy big plus. As a bonus, there is also a six wheeled rover to help you across the large maps. And this time arouind, they've gotten it right.

My advice: Definately worth a try for sci-fi and ME fans, but don't expect ME 1 to 3. It's a different game in it's own right. Have fun!

Total trash, same as Dragon Age Inquisition. Bioware is dead.... and there is no hope for them now.

    The Pros
-Except for some wonky animations (female faces in general), the game is beautiful.
    -Voice acting is generally strong.
    -Multiplayer is fun...in short doses.
-Combat is excellent. They really nailed it.

    The Cons
-Generally horrific level design. You blow hours scanning for glifs, trying to get over mountains or wondering "what the hell am I supposed to do next." Locations become repetitive fast. Whoever first equated "procedurally generated" with "fun" should be shot.
-The map. Oh god the map. Terrible optimization that leads to plenty of mindless wandering.
-The story. It's not all bad. Actually, I was quite drawn in by the first half of the game. But...the quests...are almost entirely miss-able. The end game content is dreadfully boring.
-The fun factor. Or more specifically, the lack of it. Because of all of the above, there is just too much about Andromeda that isn't fun. Driving in circles for hours? Ughhhh. Lackluster quests? Meh. Lack of any real narrative? ...Why?

I should say, for most of my experience, I was thinking..."this is a 7 game. I don't understand why it's getting so much hate." It wasn't until the entirely underwhelming endgame content that the "unfinished" quality of this game becomes unforgivable.

I bought Andromeda for $30 and I don't regret it. Will I be playing it more than once?

    Meh. Doubt it.

I waited for EA to patch this thing and for the price to go down, didn't expect much.
The general complaints about graphics and some other minor things have been done to death and don't need to be repeated. They really aren't that bad, nothing you can't live with.
The story is hard to care about. Most of the time things happen that should be developed, but aren't. More like an outline of

At this date, 9/15/2018, the damn thing is STILL buggy and crashes multiple times a day. I'm about a third of the way (at most) thru this and will quit, which I hate to do. If I don't change my mind, I'll delete it.
Anybody who pre-orders an EA game is just nuts.
This one is not worth $20.

For me it's a step back in the franchise, the premise is good but it's a licensed chapter. The original triology is superior in all respects.
It is noted that the game is not developed by the original team, even so if you like the saga you will enjoy it.
The artistic section is good highlighting above all the lighting and the soundtrack IF YOU ARE NEW IN THE SAGA PLAY THIS DELIVERY IN

The only REAL problem with this game is that it's not the OG trilogy and not DA O, The game is really good when you are not comparing it to these game and has one of the best squads Bioware ever created! Also, we get a way better Family dynamic than the rest of their games. Not to mention it's also one hell off a looker.

Compared to the greatness that was Mass Effect 2, this is an embarrassment. A complete mess of a game that clearly started out with one vision and then ended up being assaulted by competing visions as the project neared completion. Also, the number of homosexual characters is absurd: basically it's possible for almost any of the main characters to become involved in a sexual relationship, regardless of sex. There are only a couple consistently heterosexual main characters. This makes no sense as most estimates put practicing homosexuals at around 1% of the population. It would be like if a game that had a normal distribution of diverse characters suddenly made half of the people in the next game Lebanese Christians - crazy, jarring and really takes you out of the experience. While we're on the subject, the animation is terrible and the female characters have been what I can only describe as "reversed airbrushed" in order to be less attractive than the real life models on whom they are based. Like I said, this game is bonkers. You get the feeling playing this game that somewhere along the way, a good game with a lot of potential was hijacked by a political message and then beating the gamer over the head with that message became more important than the game itself. So, yea, it's pretty **** Expand

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
