Without much words or lengthy conversations, Last Day of June tells a compelling story about destinies, dreams and loss that surround its protagonist Carl. The game needs more work in some technical and visual aspects, but I gotta hand it to the developers from Ovosonico — they know how to work with emotions.

The game, heavily inspired by Steve Wilson’s “Drive Home” music video, deals with feelings we all experience at some point – grief and helplessness after losing a loved one. It does a great job for most of the time but stumbles at the very end, as the last 15 or so minutes are unnecessarily bloated and unbearably metaphysical. [11/2017, p.49]

Last Day of June is unique and story-driven, suited for those who appreciate a slower-paced journey. The reward is an artful experience that stands a chance of resonating with your heart.

Last Day of June is a game that, even though it is not as emotional as it could seem, does a great job entertaining the player and delivers a story where everything revolves around the memories.

Last Day of June paints a world that is visually beautiful on the surface and darker at its core, but its emotional story loses luster quickly. While some narrative twists drew me in nearing its conclusion, I never connected enough with the story and felt distracted by its repetitive nature.

The Last Day of June tells an emotional story of loss and acceptance, though it can’t claim to have an entirely original story. An art style that’s half cute storybook Claymation and half soulless, eyeless faces may be pretty divisive, but the game’s time looping puzzles tie well into the feelings of repetition and despair.

A joy to view but sometimes a chore to play, Last Day of June delivers a touching story that’s worth finishing.

Last Day of June wants you to feel a certain way, but the way it goes about it is clumsy and haphazard, and the visuals are unsettling.

I get that they're important but it takes the fun out of the game when you HAVE to rewatch cutscenes you've already seen 5 times.

And that's the only downside of the game. I really loved it. The story is deep (warning: might contain onions). Character emotions are genuine, even though they never say an actual word you understand exactly what they mean. the puzzles are fun and I loved the art style.

At first, I thought it was going to be a straightforward game, but it was a little bit more than that. To summarize it, Carl, the main character is trying to change the outcomes of various situations for one final bigger outcome. I don't want to give away ANY spoilers. However, the reason why my review isn't a 10/10 is only because there are many scenes (especially one scene in particular) that are repeated. Once you've seen it after the third time you're gonna want to be able to wish to skip it. Personally, I think that it was still worth it in the end. Just maybe have some tissues nearby. Full Review »
