    Doom Eternal plays like this:
    arena - jumping - arena - jumping - arena - jumping - arena - jumping - arena - jumping - etc.

The arenas go like this: running in circles, shoot, NO AMMO, change weapon, running in circles, shoot, NO AMMO, change weapon, running in circles, shoot, NO AMMO, etc. - very annoying

The Jumping goes like this: jump, dash, jump, jump, search for a key, double dash jump, miss the ledge, DIE, start over - dash, double jump, miss the item, DIE, start over - dash, double jump, etc. - until you make it to the other side - awful.

    GOOD:
    - great GFX
    - great sound and music

    BAD
    - the jumping is annoying - like you have to finish homework first to continue with the game - this is the Doom Slayer, not Lara Croft
    - slime pits where you can only walk very slowly and not jump
    - acid pits where you have to swim around and figuring out some puzzle while losing health
    - NO AMMO - constantly no ammo, and the big enemies need hundreds of shots.. also very annoying
    - after finishing an annoying endboss (e.g. the guy with the shield), he appears later in the game in the arenas - so you have to fight him again (and again) with dozens of other monsters attacking at the same time.. and you run in circles, with NO AMMO, constantly getting hit by some of the other monsters, which gain more and more speed later in the game
    - you have guns with two functions, you have grenades, flame, ice, jump, dash, punch, chainsaw... - way too much stuff for a game where dozens of monsters run towards you, and you have to act quickly to not get hit constantly.
    - you constanly have to change weapons in the arenas (because there is NO AMMO) - this takes time and is super annoying
    - many of the weapons take way too long to power up, or are too weak, too slow, etc. - but you can not discarde these weapons (which nobody needs) - and you have to constantly switch through all weapons during the fight
    - later fights go on and on and on and on... a big boss appears.. then another one, then another one... and then you get stuck at a corner, or didn't catch a ledge - and you DIE in two seconds - and have to play the arena all over again - man, what a waste of time...
    - later arenas are only button smashers and running and jumping, dashing, double jumping and shooting with NO AMMO - the monsters get faster, and you get hit all the time - no strategy at all - running in circles, jumping, shooting - while monsters and more monsters spawn all the time.
    - no satisfaction in completing a level or the game - after every mission I've hoped that this is the end of the game, because the fun factor playing this annoyance was very low.

I don't know who likes to play this game - annoying jump sequences, arenas where you win by running in circles while randomly smashing buttons, where you constantly have NO AMMO, and get constantly hit.

This game could have been great, but playing Doom Eternal is equivalent to work without pay - it makes no fun due to constant jumping and running in circles, it wastes your time, and is constantly annoying.

What a waste... don't buy it - Doom Eternal is no fun at all.

    Cheers

    This game is a masterpiece.

Looks awesome. The action is awesome. It is very nostalgic with many references from the 90s games and the game itself is a tribute to the game that made FPS be what it is today. So much that you can actually play it in Doom Eternal, though it is hidden. The lore is cool, but I dont think they should with that night sentinel medieval thing too much.

The lore is cool, but I dont think they should with that night sentinel medieval thing too much. I think they should stick with the futuristic space marine with big badass guns thing vs demons and all sorts of unholy evil creatures stuff.

The ambience, immersion, and tension is better with DOOM 2016. Doom Eternal also made me feel tense whe playing the first playthrough, but not because of huge immersion and dark things happening there, but because i knew this game was harder and the many ways it could just screw me throwing multiple enemies with new and daring mechanics all at once. It was a thrill because i knew it is chalenging ad tha would require much from me. But this game still does a great job, though with a different aproach to that.

Too many mechanics should overwhelm some people, but i think the core audience just loves it. Particularly the dash I use all the time because im required to in order to dominate the combat, but i dont like it. Makes it feel like playing Tracer from Overwatch, which has a totally different feel to every Doom game. I dislike that and would like to play Doom just with that awesome classic really fast pacing Doomguy's regular walk has. Also having monkeybars around every corner further breaks immersion and doesnt feel like it's something that belongs there. The action is good, but it doesnt feel right.

Battlemode i found a bit sucky. I usually just play it to complete events and thats it. DOOM 2016 had a much better multiplayer. I reckon they didnt follow the same model so people would maybe go to Quake Champions for that.

There a few bugs, most of them seems to be visual. Skins dont work very properly. If u wanna make ur skins work right for aome reason u gotta switch off the weapon skins. They have a really good variety of skins both at the present but also upcoming for a game that doesnt monetise that.

Anyways best action I ever had the pleasure of playing. Best FPS I ever played along with Doom 2016. Both this and DOOM 2016 each with a different feel, although most of it is the same.

If you haven't played Doom 2016, play that instead. If you have played Doom 2016, go and play it again.

I am quite disappointed with this game. It feels like they took the good stuff from Doom 2016 and just decided to tack more stuff on top of it. They seem to think that would make it better. Well, this is a great case of less is more. Doom 2016 felt cool. It felt slick and polished.

Doom 2016 felt cool. It felt slick and polished. It made you feel like a no-nonsense bad-ass.

Doom Eternal feels more like a single-player arena-shooter. Bright and colorful. Wacky and goofy. It's not all bad, but I just couldn't take it seriously when DoomGuy suddenly grabs hold of a wall and crawls on it like a spider. What!? And the platforming doesn't even try to disguise itself. It's literally platforms, in the air, you have to jump across. And swinging poles and... It's just so silly.

Monsters are redesigned a bit. For some reason they have all new faces. And it makes them look more cartoonish. I love how the monsters fall apart slowly when shooting them. It's the one thing from Doom Eternal I am absolutely in love with. That's a valuable edition to D16's design.

I don't care for the shooting mechanic design. There's too much stuff to keep track of. And you basically have to play the game a certain way to win because the uses of the different "tools" are so specific. Upgrades don't feel like they really matter beyond the weapon mods. It feels more like you are removing restrictions, than upgrading equipment. It just feels poorly designed. Like they forgot to design the upgrade properly and instead just decided to remove everything that makes him badass, only to let you slowly unlock it all again throughout the game. I couldn't believe how restrictive the game feels at the beginning. It's just no fun.

And the exploring is no fun either this time around. Why? I have no idea! I loved exploring the levels in D16, it was part of what I did on each map. Now? I just want to get on with the game so I can finish it.

I am about 12 hours into the game, and I've simply lost all interest in it. I'm not even sure I want to complete it.

In DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. Here they have simplified it for some reason. Even after looking at the selection of a new weapon, before you took it by actually lifting it from the body or picking it up from the floor. This gave realism, immersion. And now some ridiculous weighing icons in the air. This kills the whole atmosphere of the dive. AndIn DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. Doom Eternal is a very imaginative and unique take on the FPS genre which I can confidently say is unlike anything I've ever played before. The issue is, that includes it's predecessor. While Doom (2016) was this incredible romp to hell and back which managed to capture an atmosphere and tone which was perfectly immersive, grounded, and visceral, in both it's gameplay and visual aesthetic, Doom Eternal looks and feels much more like a cartoon. Not only is the art direction, writing, and general atmosphere much less realistic and consequential, but the gameplay is also so over the top and fundamentally different than the previous game that it both fails to capture that same satisfaction the former had conveyed, as well as also completely removing the player from any immersion they had in the game's universe.

Doom Eternal's gameplay is much less inspired by the classic shooters of the 90's than 2016 was; with a heavy focus on scarcity of ammo and health pickups, it forces the player to constantly micromanage all of their weapons and abilities; exploiting enemies to get whatever specific resource they need, while constantly waiting for certain abilities to recharge. In the first half of the game where you're still collecting all of the weapons and abilities you constantly feel underpowered and overwhelmed. The game doesn't really get to be all that much fun until a little over halfway through when you've finally both acquired most of the weapons and abilities and have learned how to use them; understanding how to juggle every type of grenade, learning which enemies can produce the most resources under which specific circumstances, and learning how rare each type of ammo is. Unfortunately, by the time you've internalized most of this, the game will be mostly over, and there won't be a whole lot of time left to actually enjoy this system.

Then there is Id's confusing decision to implement Mario styled platforming into the game, complete with floating platforms which drop when you step on them, and spinning ropes of fire. The platforming is serviceable, when you get it down it does have a good flow to it, but it really doesn't feel necessary in this franchise, and it doesn't gel with the previous game's style. Then again almost nothing in Eternal does.

Finally the art direction and story are just completely divorced from what we saw in 2016. The bright colors and frequent comic relief completely erode the visceral feel of the game; and everything looks like it's under a white florescent lighting, even if it doesn't make any sense in the context of the scene. Meanwhile a lot of returning enemies have been redesigned and honestly just look worse; with some of the more intimidating demons of the last game now looking cartoonish and ugly in all the wrong ways. Then there's the story, which on one hand feels like it had more effort put into it than the last game, yet it somehow feels much more thin. Plot points and characters come out of nowhere, it makes no sense without reading the lore, and it honestly just is not good. It's supplemental, technically having effort put into it, but honestly not having any emotional thru line or compelling characters.

All things considered Doom Eternal is a fun and imaginative game which I can tell the developers had fun working on and I cannot say I've seen anything like it; but in my opinion they changed so much that almost all of what I adored about the last game is gone. If this game existed in a vacuum it would be an 8 or 9, but this game is so disappointingly different from its predecessor that it just fails to be a sequel.

Expand

As someone who grew up with the original DOOM in the 90s, I found myself missing the gloomy feeling of wandering through levels with the eerie MIDI music playing and hearing demons breathing and lurking in the shadows ahead. DOOM Eternal feels a lot more chaotic and intense compared to the original. I can see how some would like that, but for me it is just too much.

The jumping puzzles in the game are well designed and satisfying to complete, but the problem I have is that there are just way too many of them. It would be more tolerable if you encountered maybe one every hour or two, but it seems like I'm constantly running into them every 10 minutes of gameplay or less, which leads to a feeling of annoyance. The violence is also really over the top. My girlfriend watched me play it and was appalled by how disgusting the gore is. To each their own, but I have to wonder about the type of people who enjoy things this violent.

The platforming is a bit frustrating, and I don't know what to think about the extended fights where you kill mindless zombies to refill health and ammo. It's an interesting design, but for me I ended up not looking forward to fighting hordes of demons, where in previous DOOMs, I couldn't wait for the next fight.

Anyways, overall it's a good game. I put in about 8 hours or so and got my money's worth, but I can't find myself wanting to finish the game.

Although there are now some more story elements and platforming involved, the gameplay remains the bread and butter. I implore anyone to play this on the harder difficulties (at the very least on Ultra Violence) because it will force you to learn all the tools at your disposal, your enemies’ weaknesses, and really make you think what weapon to use for each situation and what enemies you want to take out first, which makes every fight an intense and thrilling one. You might come out of each battle just barely alive, but it’s incredibly fun and rewarding when you come out on top. Best of all, it does a fantastic job of making you feel like this unrelenting force; it’s pure bliss. The game does a great job of breaking up each fight with a little bit of story, some really fluid and fun platforming, and of course, exploration to find collectibles and upgrades. The story is no way intrusive, you can dive into the lore as much as you want or get right into the action. The story is there to serve one purpose, and that is to show just how much of a badass the Doom Slayer is.

My only critique is the aesthetics of the menus and HUD. It’s a lot more colorful and vibrant this time around, but I prefer Doom 2016’s menus. I didn’t mind it and was never distracting at any point, but it’s just something to take note of.

Doom Eternal is just an awesome game. You can clearly see how much passion went into making this. Everything from the graphics, music, gameplay, story and everything else is just so well done and on point. Do yourself a favor, and pick this one up!

Lastly not too fond of the whole arena battle thing, that's not a Doom game.

    Not bad, but overall disappointing.

If you are not sure of buying the game, there is no other way, but to spoil the story by watching other people's gameplays, since apparently there are people who bought the game without knowing what was going to come in the game or what They knew and that's why they complain that `` It was not what I expected '' and other absurd things like that, when in the quake-con and E3 they showed in gameplays that the dash and the tubes to hang you, among other things, were already implemented in the game . It is one thing to say that you do not like mechanics and your opinion is well respected, but another thing to say the game is horrible just because you do not like it or because yes, that is to be mediocre. The best way to stay alive is too move and keep killing demons, as it should be and and the action only slows down in between fighting arenas and even in between levels there are tough enemies to fight too. I see a lot of people complain about it not having enough ammo. Well that is what the chainsaw is for. the chainsaw has a cool down because you will need it a lot. Doom 2016 was way better than expected. This one thou didn't meet my expectations. It's just not fun.

Somehow it looks worst than the 2016 version and silly like a comedy it's supposed to be hell like.

The ammo mechanics which I thought would be interesting didn't work out. Out of ammo all the time with every weapon. And I play Doom 2016 in Nightmare level. So I don't know it's just not fun.

Chainsawing refills ammo and as long as you remember to chainsaw fodder demons regularly it's fine. It would be better though I think if the chainsaw animation was faster. I also found that I also needed time to get used to the platforming and using the map, maybe that's because this is my first DOOM game, though.

Graphics and performance are solid, which is great. A lot of triple A games being released that run like **** but not this one. Story is serviceable and I found myself spending a lot of time reading the lore entries. Music is also great overall. Environments and map layouts are diverse and fairly intricate. Enemy types are interesting as well. The interplay between the arsenal and the weaknesses and strengths of the different enemy types works well.

When you know how the system works and things are flowing, it can be a very fun experience. I personally feel like I would've appreciated it being even faster and more over-the-top than it already is in terms of just being a demon-slaying badass, but it does a good job as is.

I'm a big Doom fan, starting from the classics. I was totally in love with Doom 2016. It was an almost perfect Doom in every sense. In anticipation of Doom Eternal, I replayed the whole campaign in Nightmare the week before the release. I was in front of the Bethestda Launcher waiting for the countdown to hit zero at midnight.

Then I started the game and I really really tried to like it. I was fighting my inner self more than the monsters, trying to convince myself that the game had to be good, that the problem was with me. Unfortunately I couldn't win that battle and the verdict is that the game is just OK. So much wasted potential.

    Anyway, here are my lowlights:

    - The story is not connected to Doom 2016. They had so much good material to work on from the ending of Doom 2016. And there's not even a cinematic to start the game.
    - The graphics are disappointing for 2020. It's quite similar to 2016 and doesn't compare to other AAA games from 2020.
    - The Doomguy has no face in Doom 2016. He has a face in Doom 3 and in Doom Eternal. Guess which one of these games doesn't sux.
    - The style is very cartoonish, which doesn't work for Doom at all. WT* is going on with the bright and colorful loot items? I restarted the game multiple times and checked my graphic drivers thinking there was a problem with my rendering. And WT* is that question mark jumping up and down in secret rooms?
    - The game mechanics and mobility: this is where they ruined it all for me. "All you need is ammo", said Dr Samuel Hayden in Doom 2016. Now you need to be an acrobat to jump and grab monkey bars (WT*), climb walls, dash, double-dash, whatever.
    - The complexity: in Doom 2016 we had argent cells, weapon points, mods and runes. Eternal introduces life powerups and a complex weapon upgrade tree. You can put daemons on fire, or freeze them. Then there's the "blood punch", the "empowered demon", "secret gates", "slayer gates"... Oh my.

This game is a solid "meh". 5/10. Wasted potential.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The overall gameplay was fun. The flow of combat, level design and difficulty was perfect for a doom game. If you liked the previous game, you will enjoy this one just as well. The only complaint i can dig up if i really nitpick is... you can sometimes get buried under a horde of demons and get stuck unable to move. But as Dark Souls players would say "git gud" and it won't happen too often.

The soundtrack once again, amazing. I've never been more awake playing a video game.

Story wise... well that's where it kinda falls apart.
Doomguy 2016 was a badass on a quest for revenge after his heart and soul were shattered.
Doomguy 2020 is a mindless psychopath killing **** just because.
something tells me the original writer didn't take part in making this game.
Doom was never about story, but i always prefer games with stories because they allow me to see the world through the character's eyes. Feel what they feel. Use their motivation as my own.
So if you're going to do a story, you better **** do it right.
I started this game with the motivation of "i was betrayed, time to kill **** and ended it with "unga bunga, me smash, you go boom boom". The only motivation i had for finishing this game was the compulsion to do a 100% run.
A little disappointed that the fan theories and previously set Lore was all just... blood punched out of existence and all that remains is this new doomguy that i really can't relate with nor do i want to.

One thing the game definitely improves over Doom 2016 is the aesthetic. Doom 2016 wasn't terrible, by any means, but a lot of the environments leaned on the generic side, especially the Hell levels. Doom Eternal, by contrast, cranks up the insanity factor which makes it seem closer to the Classic Dooms that were made to be abstract and goofy.

The plot probably won't win any writing awards, but it serves the purpose well enough and it was interesting to hear what the Doom Slayer actually sounds like. VEGA is always a delight to listen to, and you can always skip most of the cutscenes if you really want to just get into the action. The little nods and winks to Classic Dooms, including being able to play Dooms 1 and 2 on the Slayer's retro PC, were also very nice touches.

Overall, a surprisingly nice upgrade over Doom 2016, even if it doesn't always hit every mark perfectly.

It changes it up from doom 2016 where you almost never needed to think about ammo, That's the main thing going for this game. You need to fully think about your approach to it. You need to be open to facing difficulty. The marauder is good example. He was difficult my first time fighting him. But once I realized I can't just go in and expecting to pump several double barrel shotgun shoots in his face I got through it. Instead of pumping a few shots in the mancubus with the double barrel like the doom 2016. It's smart to first freeze him, use the sticky bombs to disable his flame thrower and then pump several shots into him. It's way more fun to traverse around the arena. Such as the yellow pipes you can use it to move around and then use the meat hook to grapple your way to an imp and then proceed to use the chainsaw. I also generally believe it the level design is way better than doom 2016. Overall an extremely fun entry into the series. I would totally recommend. Expand

    - I don't need big shiny question marks on secrets and arcade-styled powerups.
    - I don't need this much platforming.
    - I don't want this weird way of storytelling.

I simply don't get why we couldn't keep the formula of Doom 2016, where it was so satisfying to crush monsters' sculls. Where is it all gone? And where is all this storyline coming from? Why do we need this generic fantasy nonsense in a Doom game, what is it, Harry Potter fanfiction? And also why do I need to watch monsters fighting each other without taking any actual damage? Is it supposed to be funny?

Thanks, but no, refund, I will rather play any other Doom game. This one is not just a bad Doom game, this is not even a shooter. This is First Person Mario-Dota-Slasher, a new kind of genre, which I defenitely do NOT like. And it is a shame they spoiled great Doom series with this awful game.

PS. What those positive reviewers are even talking about - "resource management", "strategic thinking"? How about this strategy - "press E for ammo, press C for health", does it sound smart to you? Resource management existed in classic Doom games where you had actually to learn level to find hidden ammo, or otherwise you would just die, because there was no infinite farming. Modern mass-market "gamers" would just cry, I believe, so here you have doom eternal.

Now onto ammo. Maximum ammo amounts in this game are low, yes (maximum 60 shells in Doom 2016 and 24 shells in this game), but you can easily chainsaw a fodder demon to get your ammo up. So I don't really understand those reviews.
Now onto multiplayer. As of the time of writing, the only multiplayer mode is Battlemode. Not sure if the developers will release any other modes, but that's beside the point. Battlemode is probably the only slightly bad part of this game. I had fun in it for about ~10 hours, then it got repetitive and boring. The main issue with the game's multiplayer is the lack of modes. One mode just isn't enough.

Now for all these people that complain that so many has changed in Doom Eternal. It was for the betterment of it. Mainly because its a sequel meant for more varieties to happen. The devs were right, they doubled down as many things could happen compared to 2016. I don't see myself going back to 2016 for the gist of it as well. Its like improvement is being bad for you doomers who can't even get good in this game.

People rant about the AMMO, in all honesty there are many scattered ammos around arenas, even the respawning fodders of which you could chainsaw. "The chainsaw became a reload weapon." Since when has it not? You have to use the chainsaw effieciently during your battles. Not when all your weapon ammos are depleted. Hence it refuels quickly. Don't get your arse stuck up when everythings low because you've got the mentality of only using it on occasions. 2016 basically has too many ammo that you just constantly use one weapon most of the time, aka super shotgun. Doom Eternal teaches you to use the each of your weapons which makes your gameplay more fluid than ever. I can't believe you guys just can''t handle what weapon is necessary for each and every demon. If you properly use your ammo resources, then you'll still have a lot in the end of the combat.

The MARAUDERS are there to show off your skills if you can take this demon down instantly. Shooting him brainlessly punishes you to die. This demon basically controls the arena where the others won't, thats why hes so unique. The mf is basically your demonized reflection. "BuT dOoM is SuPpOseD tO be a FaSt pAcE gAMe" Yeah if you actually learn how to beat the Marauder, you'd beat him in less than 20sec tops. Hell, prolly even 10. Here's a tip, stay mid-range from him and super shotgun or ballista him when hes near. Don't shoot his shield for crying out loud. The wolf only comes out when you do it. That''s why you never shoot brainlessly.

Level Designs are too complex? Excuse me but I remembered 2016 to be too dull and repetitive considering its just full on red. Its also tight in many combat areas where theres no free flow to roam around in. Even if the platform is like Mario, I would never doubt you that you couldn't finish them. They're easy to bypass and understandable. Atmosphere felt in place as well considering each level designs are very different from one another.

Punching does nothing? Blood punch basically destroys most of the enemies in Eternal. Maybe you people forget that theres such a thing as that one. If you people can't comprehend the amount of throwables at your hand, then you're not thinking through and through on your gameplay, no wonder why you love 2016 so much. Its not even required for you to use them, considering you control what you play, but its necessary to use these to help your combat.

For the story, I have no saying of it considering I like it, but many do, I do not know why but its everyones perspective.

I guess people really want realistically looking games, how does cartoonish graphics make the game look more ugly?

Even Doom 2016 was easy to beat to why I kinda got bored to it. Nightmare you say? that doesn't spice things too much even that one was okay to deal with. Doom Eternal's difficulty is rewarding and great. Even if i lost, Ive had extra lives in my hands and it rewards you into becoming an actual Slayer.

In all honesty I think the people who whine are the ones who can't see themselves playing hardcore action skilled fps games at all. These people can't handle quick thinking and just blatantly relies on going all on no mind process shooting. Go back to call of duty if that's what you're after if you want simple repetitive game mechanics. Its you who has a problem with the game, not the game itself.

The gamers dont play for this stuff:instead of logical riddeles they want actions and simple rapidness, what we got in the 2016 doom game in a very high quality.

    Others:

    - it is neceserry to use chainsaw, but this obviously too much, sometimes i felt that i am in a lumber mill not in a doom game
-you cant chose your weapon, this not else but a complete disaster in an FPS game.
-for me its a bit a hard to decide whether the story schemtic or not. I did not like it but thats very subjective. However I must mention it had some logical disorder with the argent energy. Also the place where soul extraction happens is not realistic. (For example its stupid that the whole worlds soul extraction happen in very small room.)

The gameplay is tedious, slower movement, no crouch, monotonous and cramped arenas, constant -forced-teleporting towards enemies to execute kills and refill ammo every few seconds. Badly designed platforming sections and vertical areas.
The list goes on.. a story which they are trying to tell is told very poorly (as opposed to the much better minimalist approach from 2016), level and map designs are also a serious downgrade from 2016, graphics and artstyle , just the tone of the game in general are overly bright and cartoonish with hardly any convincing gore or horror elements to speak of. A Garish and obtrusive UI. The music score.. as one of the only remaining redeeming features, still somehow never seems to match the schizophrenic pace of the gameplay.. this time around.

Eternal is overflowing with unnecessary gimmicks. Quantity over quality.

After playing through Eternal, went straight back into the 2016 game to refresh my memory.. The difference is like night and day. Having played through 2016 multiple times, it is a far better game.

Doom Eternal is an average shooter, at best. I am struggling, reaching, to award it a 5 outta 10.. As they've ruined one of the greatest FpS's of all time,. . .It's a Four! Absolutely appalling.

I rage quit and uninstalled after playing 80 % through the game when I encountered a super hard boss mob I simply could not beat. But you can play this game and have a great time without story. Lastly, the online, the experience felt shallow and unbalanced, and it could use some new modes. Onto the things I liked. I really loved the new cartoon-ish nature of the new art style, but it didn't take me out of the experience. The new glory kills were gory and really badass. The game felt challenging which is a nice change from 2016 (which I loved) where you could just use the super shotgun the whole game. The game forced you to learn how to use new weapons and manage health and ammo strategically. The world was great to look at with beautiful set pieces. The game felt smooth and well optimized which is rare for a Bethesda title! Lastly, the Mick Gordon soundtrack was great, each track felt unique and made ripping and tearing fell so much more satisfying. Overall this game is worth the money! "combat chess" is what they call it. I call it lame. I just want to shoot **** until it dies. I don't want to figure out a strategy. There's literally enemies in this game that are immune to certain weapons. In. A. Doom. Game.
What? Seriously I can't count how many times where I had to stand around and look at an empty, boring level to figure out where the next **** jumping puzzle is. Or figure out where a switch was to open a door. This destroys the pacing.
Also there's whole levels dedicated to lore. You know what I'm playing Doom for? It sure as **** isn't LORE. What happened to **** keycards and doors and corridors? You, know, like a DOOM Game? Why is there vast open levels with invisible walls and **** Why do I need puzzles and jumping hazards? I should NEVER die in a fps to jumping. EVER. I'll say this: the art direction is fantastic. The combat can be really fun, at times. It's just too few and far between.
Also the PC version is really buggy! I've fallen through the level. I've seen let's players fall through the level. Enemies sometimes just vanish. I've seen enemies get stuck in the architecture and die. You're constantly getting tripped up or stuck on the walls during combat.

I had high hopes for Doom Eternal, but unfortunately i got conned. This so called game is not a FPS. It is a Slasher with guns, pointless Glory Kills and a Chainsaw, which is just for ammo and armour management. If you try to play Doom Eternal like Doom 2016 and classic First Person Shooter, you die, run out of ammo fast, and die again. You are forced to play this game like a slasher with guns. All enemies have specific weaknesses and you are forced to use a certain gun on certain part of the enemy! Take the Cacodemon. You have to launch or throw a grenade in his mouth! If you try and shoot him with a regular weapon, you run out of ammo and die. A typical encounter forces you to play like this-- Flamethrower, Shoot, enemy Flashes blue, Blood Punch, Glory Kill, Shoot, Chainsaw, collect ammo, Repeat. It is the most depressing game mechanic i have ever come across in a game, in my 40 years of playing games. In between these depressing encounters, in which enemies re-spawn, you are in a Mario 64 Platform gaming. So what exactly is this game? Firstly it is not a First Person Shooter, It is Mario 64 with Chainsaws and gratuitous Mortal Kombat Glory Kills. It would have been simpler if id Software had just made a 10 hour video of the game, because you are forced to play it in an exact way or you die. This game is a Slasher with guns, and some platforming in between. I have never hated a game more in my whole life as Doom Eternal. After 15 hours of torture, i permanently deleted it of my Steam Account and also permanently deleted Doom 2016 from my account, As ID Software and Bethesda killed the whole Doom franchise for me. They actually made me hate Doom, and if i ever see a chainsaw in any game ever again, i will refuse to play the game. Expand

This game is the literal opposite of that. You are weak, your ammo is minimal and your guns don't turn the enemies into paste as quickly as the old doom games. Oh and the level design is awful.

    Bring back doom 2

Doom 2016 was famous for its aggerssiveness, its protagonist, the glory kills, the fast pace and making you feel badass.
In this game, they added parkour levels and puzzles to the game, a story and changed a lot of the demons.
It doesn't feel like Doom. It feels more like Call Of Duty than Doom.
If Doom Eternal was released instead of Doom 2016 in 2016, there wouldn't be a Doom Eternal right now. Nobody would want a sequel.
It feels like they added a stupid rushed story to the game just so they can continue the story in a sequel. I feel like no Doom 2016 fan would want a sequel to this.

This thing is not Doom. Sure, it has the guns and the music, but this is not Doom.

This is a very biased review of course, but this is my favorite game ever made. I will happily explain why, and having going back to playing Doom 2016 for an hour today, it is actually weird how many negative things I notice that I haven't before about the game.

So far, I've doubled my playtime in Eternal (122 hours at the moment) compared to 62 over the past 4 years in 2016. Now:

Now: what makes the game good, in my opinion, and what are my responses to the criticisms?

Gorgeous art direction. If you go back and replay Doom 2016, take a look at nearly every area in the entirety of that game. It looks identical to Doom 3, for all of the **** that people give that game. Doom Eternal expands on the ideas of the OG games, opting for epic landscapes and portrayals that I've always wanted out of Doom 2: Hell On Earth as a young kid. Without spoiling anything, within the 14 levels you never go to the same place twice. I don't think this'll count as spoilers, so I'll include the list: Hell On Earth with city landscapes and various architecture and cool **** for story reasons I won't say, we go to the Sentinel homeworld with the gorgeous trees and medieval castles, go to the general pits of Hell, where the consumption of Earth's architecture has been rooted. You go to the icy northern parts of Earth with various architecture from a faction, you go to the more barren mountainous and foggy very industrial complex hosting a major enemy, you go to the "Super Gore Nest" (give it a Google), you go the heart of the resistance and other story bits, as well as major enemy, you go to Phobos' UAC sci-fi complex with the BFG 10k, you go to the outer destroyed surface of mars and various floaty bits left behind, you go to the hellish corrupted core (with some sick **** setpieces man), you go to the more regal portions of the Sentinel world, you go to the absolutely horrid factory deposits of hell and such a banger **** song, and "Urdak" (a unique heaven thing, it's pretty cool).

Enemy variety, of course, is superb. Now, this isn't 2016; you can't kill everything with the double barrel shotgun like a wild goose. This game is hard. It's actually quite similar to chess (I know, super cliche analogy), but if you don't learn the mechanics it'll kick your ass.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was really considering giving this game a 9 because of my personal preferences, however, I decided not to. This game is, I kid you not, probably the best game I've ever played, apart from Halo 3 or Dark Souls.

First of all, the game play. The game play is ABSOLUTELY the best part of this game. In the 2016 DooM, the plasma rifle and the rocket launcher felt sort of... Just unlikable to me. Not in DooM Eternal, though! In DooM Eternal every single gun, every single weapon feels amazing to use. The Combat Shotgun at the start of the game is a lot weaker than the one in 2016, where you could shoot an imp in the foot and he would stagger, in this game you're required to get actual good shots on the demons, usually it's just a chest shot and a foot shot for a stagger, but that's 2 shots, out of like 15 shots at the start of the game. I'll skip most of the other weapons and just say that they are WAY weaker than their versions in DooM 2016, however I believe that's a good thing, as it makes you rely on your chainsaw a lot more, which is back again with some of the most satisfying and best kill animations in the game. There are of course, other weapons. The first other weapon you'll get is the grenade, which, unlike in DooM 2016, is far more required. The other weapon is the freeze grenade, this just freezes demon and I honestly just like it a lot. One of the last weapons you get is the Crucible, I love this thing. I love how rare the... Ammo? For it is, and how powerful, quick and strong it is. You've probably noticed a theme in this review of gameplay, which is that the ammo is a lot more scarce and guns are worse in terms of damage, which I think is a good thing. This isn't like DooM 2016, where the game gives you a power fantasy, in DooM Eternal, you earn the power fantasy. DooM Eternal is a lot more difficult, requiring better aim, precision and reflexes and it requires you to switch weapons in order to survive, and I've noticed that A LOT of people hate that, and I can see their point, but I personally love it. This isn't an easy game, it's very difficult, if you don't like that, then don't get it.

Next, the enemies in the game. They're just amazing, but I mainly want to talk about the Marauder, because he has caused a lot of controversy, but I will TRY to explain why I think he's one of, if not the best demon in DooM Eternal. First, lets talk about his move set, it seems easy to learn, but it's super hard to master. He has a close range shotgun, a middle range attack that flashes green for a bit, and a long range axe swing. One thing that a lot of people don't notice, is that he doesn't just use his flashing attack at mid range, he uses it after he becomes an Olympic runner and runs up to you. He can do that at any range, mid range is simply the most likely. He is the enemy that effectively turns the game into a horror game when you turn around and see him. Also, something a lot of people don't seem to do, is attack after you do a partial stagger after his flashing attack, see, if you successfully hit him with something like a shotgun, he goes back for a second, this lets you use a variety of attacks, a sticky bomb, grenade launcher, but I like to use the Ballista. So, to deal double damage to him, hit him with a super shotgun, then quickly follow with a Ballista.

    Next, the story.
Just don't. I'll admit this game tries way harder than DooM 2016 with the story, but it sort of fails. But while it did fail, why are you playing DooM for the story? This is a man who says "Rip and tear your guts! You are huge! That means you have huge guts! RIP AND TEAR!" If you don't like the story, hold down R.

    Next, the graphics.
This game has stunning graphics, and it runs very well, too. Although it is kind of annoying that the texture filtering is apparently so detrimental to the game, I mean, I've never had it above like the second highest setting, and this is on a RTX 2060 on 2560x1440. To summarize, graphics are very good.

Finally, I have to address many of the games complaints. 1st, the guns. This game does NOT force you to use any guns, you have a choice, use the effective weapon, or the one that's ineffective. This is something called difficulty and challenge. If you don't want that, and want to use the shotgun for every single enemy, even the Doom Hunters, good luck. This isn't an easy game, for gods sake, stop thinking it is, if you want it to be, turn the difficulty down! 2nd, the platforming. Oh boy... Why do people hate it?! It's great, there's honestly not much of it, especially not in the later levels, and even though there is quite a few of them at the start, it's fun! 3rd, the puzzles. I'll agree with this claim, I don't really like them. They're easy, however they are quick, easy and honestly more of a nuisance.

To conclude, this game is not easy, especially on harder difficulties. This game is hard, the end.

Also, I'm angry punches are useless. BTW the music is so amazing!

How on earth they managed to ruin what is a simple formula is hard to understand but then look what they did to Wolfenstein.

No doubt the MSM morons will praise it to the ceiling but then don't they always.

If you're looking for a deep and thought-provoking gaming experience that changes your outlook on life, look elsewhere. However, if you want a fast-paced, visceral shooter full of non-stop action and outrageous violence, you can't do better than Doom Eternal. If you liked 2016's offering you will love this follow up. It's a hell of a good time.

Like Jason Statham’s character in Crank, Doom Eternal needs adrenaline every waking second. So long as you drown hordes of demons in their own blood, it feels like a perfect GOTY contender, but during quiet moments, Doom Eternal withers and forces you to ponder unpleasant questions. id Software needs to course-correct, otherwise we’ll be playing Super Doom Slayer’s Bros in a few years.
