Doom Eternal is a 'game' in the purest sense like it has always been, it's about nothing more than going in and having a blast, few games have brought me fun like DOOM has as I've already completed the campaign, and I certainly will replay all of it very soon just because the core gameplay is so much fun!

Bethesda & id have done it again. They've managed to make an amazing sequel to Doom 2016 by building up on 2016 gameplay and adding more depth. The end result: one of the best shooters on the market, and one of the best shooters of the last 10 years.

The series is nostalgic for me and I love that a new installment was done so well. I noticed myself taking long, deep breaths during one battle sequence and realized my mindfulness habits for anxiety were kicking in because of how intense the combat was... I hadn't had that feeling from a game in a really long time, and it was pretty damn exhilarating.

I believe there are two types of games: those that strive to send a message, and those that simply aim to entertain the player. DOOM Eternal belongs to the latter group; not that there’s anything wrong with it - quite the contrary. Because it excels at it.

DOOM Eternal turned the game and the whole franchise into a joke that doesn't even takes it self serious.
Everything DOOM 2016 achived was thrown away into the garbage; the world building, characters, story and somehow even gameplay.

The gameplay in 2016 was one of the best in any FPS, it felt fluid and amazing. DOOM Eternal has, what it feels like, a fixed and static gameplay system that you can't control. Example: You are forced to use certain weapons on enemies too kill them; which ruins the famous term "Shoot at it until it dies"

It's no longer "shoot at it until it dies" as you get punished for it. Biggest example (of many) are boss fights. Every boss (except the final one) is no longer dynamic like in 2016. Every boss has a fixed pattern and you have to do certain things before you can attack the boss for a *limited time*.

DOOM Hunter - Destroy the shield.
Marauder - Wait for the eyes to flash green.
Gladiator - wait for the magic shield to go down.
Khan Maykr - Forced to use the meat hook and fist before you can attack her for a limited time.

The world building is by far a big let down of any game I've played. In 2016 you slowly move through Mars getting closer and closer to your destination as seen from the world, Example:
On the first level you could see the argent tower from the very beginning and after each level you the tower gets closer and closer, and when you're finally there you get to climb up the whole tower.
DOOM Eternal has none of that simply because you don't get to stay in one place at all.

The absolute biggest issue with this games world building and immersion is teleportation.
First you're on Earth, then in a different dimension, then in hell then back to earth and now you're somehow in heaven. This completly ruined the DOOM universe to me.
2016 had Mars and Hell. Eternal has countless dimensions that have no place in DOOM whatsoever.

And now the biggest let down for me and the biggest middle finger to 2016 is the destruction of Mars. Everything the DOOM 2016 has built up with the UAC, gone, in mere seconds, simply because of a cutscene that tried to blind the player with "WOW, a cOoL bIg lAsSer" while destroying the home place of the DOOM franchise for god knows whatever reason.
But seeing how Eternal has chosen Fantasy over Sci-fi, I wouldn't be suprised if Mars was magically brought back.

But what makes me hate Eternal the most, is the aracady direction ID went with this game.

    HUD/UI:
The HUD looks like something you would see in a mobile game. I have no doubt that this HUD was inspired by Apex legends. EXACT same geomeotry and use of bright colors. The thing with Apex is that the bright colors are very needed for fast navigation with the ammo managment. ETERNAL DOESN'T NEED THAT. Hugo or Marty mentioned that the bright colors purpose is to distinguish the ammo, which makes absolutly zero sense as it was never needed at all.

    Floating props:
This is something that completely annihilated the immersion this game had to offer.Floating Weapons. Floating book pages. 2 Meter long question marks. (+Fcking confetti when you walk through it).
I feel sorry and bad for the people who made the concept arts and desing for the levels.
Imagine making something so big and eerie just so there can be a big floating question mark in the middle of nowhere.

    Oversaturation of levels:
DOOM 2016 had three color choices for levels to stick with: Red, Dark Green and "cool" colors.
DOOM Eternal uses the entire color spectrum for each level. No level is easy on the eyes when it comes to the colors.

    Ridiculous skins:
This come back to where I said "a joke that doesn't take itself serious".
If you told me 4 years ago that the next game DOOM game would have the slayer wearing a greasy t-shirt with a "extra thicc" text on it I would have called you crazy
I want you guys to look at 4 examples I gave you and imagine 2016 with all of that. It's simply impossible.

Last thing I wanna talk about is the story.
DOOM 2016 had a very simplistic story. You wake up and start killing and destroying. This is all DOOM should be. 2016 also had a cliff hanger that was for nothing as Eternal doesn't start where 2016 stopped.

Hayden isn't a smart human that died of cancer and got reincarnated as a robot. Hayden is god of all of recreation.

VEGA isn't a super computer that was created and tested by UAC employees (That needs absolute zero cooling btw). Vega is a god in a USB stick.

I've to stop here as I've reached the limit.
DOOM Eternal has **** up the entire franchise. I see no future of DOOM whatsoever. The next DOOM should just be a mario styled arcade shooter. Just dimensions you jump from level to level killing demons in a arena with no story or a goal. (Then there's this one V-Tuber Anime girl easter egg. This series is done and dead.)

    Easily a FPS MASTERPIECE

This game played on Nightmare and especially on Ultra-Nightmare is the Dark Souls of First Person Shooters (FPS) .

Doom 2016 was a nice introduction but Eternal (DE) is evolution. I played through Doom 2016 once and it was cool but for me it had no replay value.

Eternal is something different. This is a Metal Concert, the definition of adrenalin fueled gameplay and you are constantly in the mosh pit!

Levels like Nekravol, holy **** This is what I expect when I hear DOOM, You fighting Hell and Demons fearing YOU - just great stuff and the game looks gorgeous at all times and runs extremely smooth!

The story is completely optional but after having so much fun playing the game, I wanted to know the story behind it all and it is fascinating; it feels like a biblical comic - creative stuff!
And the music... just perfect! Mick Gordon delivered once again!

It is punishing and brutally hard. You have to learn how to fight all these different demons in different constellations and in a way which suits YOU!
You have to view the game as a sort of a live action combat puzzle, you cannot just use one weapon and get through every level - especially not on higher difficulty.
On Nightmare it is really frustrating at times, but there is always a way to 'Git Gud' as in Dark Souls or Sekiro.
This game is made to be mastered. To get better.
This is not a game which you play through once and you seen it all, done it all - no.

I actually wish that they made the game more like Sekiro - only one difficulty: NIGHTMARE, and well Ultra-Nightmare for the elite players. This way the message would have been clear for everyone - this is a skill based FPS, not some cookie cutter walk through the park experience (which honestly everything below nightmare is, once you've played on it).

It is no exaggeration if I say: If you can play Doom on Nightmare, you are ready for all other FPS games.
It's like the ring to rule them all.

Going back to games like CoD feels almost boring. The dynamic and multitasking aspect which DE offers is unmatched.
Freeze 'em, burn 'em, shot 'em, nade 'em, and use the right weapon with the the right attachment to kill 'em. Manage your chainsaw loads and grenades; what runes do you like the most, when to switch them up? What suit points to use first? Did you master the weapon switching yet?

Can't progress at a slayer gate? Go on Youtube, look how the Pro's doing it. Be **** amazed, 'cause seriously high-level Doom Eternal is a league of its own.

And no, you don't have to shot all those weakpoints, you could just shotgun/ballista or heavy cannon/rocket your enemy's in the chest or ice bomb and use the chain gun or any other weapon combination you have in your arsenal and you LIKE. The possibilities and combinations are almost endless. Almost every week players find a new way to kill the marauder.

Platforming is part of the equation, that way you learn how to maneuver in those big arenas. But yeah, sometimes it is definitely annoying.
The only negative aspect I can think of is, when DE is not working properly: 'no target', no blood punch registration and bugs here and there but this is rarely an big issue, but still worth noting.

What is lacking for me to give it a 10/10 is the lack of training tools to master various demons and fights like they implemented various training scenarios for the player to learn chainsaw, ice bomb etc.
The demon prison aka the 'Ripatorium' could have been a way more useful tool if you could go in there and customize your fight aka decide for yourself against which demon you want to fight and learn how to beat them more efficiently and learn their attacks in an isolated environment.
This is a thing which still bothers me, even after hundreds of hours of playing, that I still don't quiet understand how much damage I get from various attacks from different demons. And you have almost no chance to learn that in a big arena fight if several demons are attacking you at the same time.
A Load Checkpoint system or quick save system would have been great, to train various instances without having to replay the whole level or to use 3rd party software to train for Ultra Nightmare.

At this point I feel like all people who wanted essentially a Doom 16 v2 are done with their grieving and real FPS connaisseurs are more and more understanding the greatness DE offers.

And finally, the community and devs. The communication is just fantastic! A really healthy community with such a caring game director - Hugo Martin - you love to see that and I honestly never seen such communication with any other AAA title. And mind you, I am pretty late to the party.

    My personal rating: 9/10

I started this game having no expectations and it turned out that this hardly is a near-perfect game like the reviews would suggest.

Starting out with the good - the graphics and sound are decent and the game feels very smooth. The soundtrack is easily the game’s best part, furious industrial metal that goes really great with fast-paced arena combat. When Doom Eternal is at its best, you're jumping above demons, freezing them, chainsawing, blowing up and tearing to pieces. If you execute your combos perfectly, the game rewards you with almost a blissful state of zen in the middle of tearing down hordes of screaming demons. The catch is, this doesn't happen very often and everything else about the game is an afterthought.

The story is completely artificial and a poor excuse for the gameplay. You start out in sci-fi facilities, then go through Oblivion and Skyrim-like towns, through hell, which, and I really wish I'd be joking, is now a factory and a power plant and ends in some sort of futuristic place that looks like it belongs in Destiny more than here. The main protagonist gained a base, which looks sort of like a mashup between Doom's sci-fi interiors with Warhammer. You can definitely tell Bethesda's influence in the form of Elder Scrollization of the whole game, which starts at the environment, goes through the story and ends with the NPCs, most of which have terribly weak and infantile design. On top of that the main antagonist is now some kind of a levitating mech. Who the hell thought that mashing all this stuff into a single game was a good idea?

Combat got really complicated, with you having to juggle between several abilities that have cooldowns like dashing, throwing a grenade, setting demons on fire, glory killing or chainsawing them with artifically small amounts of ammo in your pocket forcing you to cycle weapons all the time. Instead of focusing on mowing down demons as fast as possible, you're now managing the health, armor, ammo, cooldowns for skills and later on also a special weapon, which I won't spoil here. There are new enemy types like the marauders that slow the combat down to a halt due to their mechanics. When you're not in an arena, the game becomes sort of a quasi-platformer puzzle where you have to climb walls, double jump and dash through pits and level geometry which more often than not is frustrating.

On top of that the attention to detail in this game leaves a lot to be desired. The cutscenes are completely disjointed from the gameplay. After a fight, you're suddenly yanked from where you're standing, something happens in the environment with the camera pointing at it and then you're suddenly placed in a completely different place than you were standing before. Level design suggests to you that certain areas are accessible, while in reality you're going to bounce away from an invisible wall. The game lacks any pacing and a feel of progression. You're dropped straight into a hellhole in the middle of something and there is literally no introduction - you grab a shotgun and kill the first hell priest, one of your main objectives of the game like it's nothing.

Summing it up, it's a lot like Doom 2016, just much more complicated in every aspect, partly in more interesting ways but mostly more irritating with a setting that doesn't fit the series at all. It’s a part-platformer, part-Doom, part-Quake, part-Elder Scrolls hodgepodge of mismatched elements that gets really confusing at times. And despite all of its grandiose the game still comes as very shallow. Don’t buy it for the full price, it’s not worth it, but if you’re able to get it on a sale like I did, go ahead. It’s still a decent title, which has its better moments but it's definitely not a hit like the reviews make you believe it is.

The core combat is excellent – you are encouraged to be constantly mobile, with a broad variety of enemies rewarding you for taking a variety of different approaches and using different tools in your arsenal. You are encouraged to both fight at a distance, to fight at midrange, and to fight up close by various different enemy types, which helps to mix up combat encounters and keep them fresh and interesting. You have a chainsaw and a flamethrower, the former of which lets you instant-kill enemies for more ammo and some health and the latter of which gives you armor, as well as your glory kills – badly injured enemies start flashing, and you can rush in and do a special kill on them for a bunch of extra health (and if they’re on fire, armor as well).

But at the same time, many enemies can do a lot of damage up close, so you are rewarded for moving in, taking out some foes, then moving back out again, using cover to absorb ranged attacks, before moving to a new position to lay down more damage.

You also have a pair of grenades – a frag grenade that does damage, and a freeze grenade that freezes enemies in a large area – along with a “blood punch”, another upgraded melee attack that you get by glory killing enemies, resulting in a powerful attack that can severely injure or kill demons and give you a bunch of health drops.

In the endgame, you also get a sword, that instantly cuts any non-boss demon in half (and even some miniboss demons), though it has severely limited ammunition.

It can all be a bit much to keep track of sometimes, but it ends up rewarding the player for mixing up their gameplay, and not just falling into the trap of doing the same thing over and over again.

You have eight weapons, each of which has two alternate fire modes, and almost all of them are very useful against particular foes, rewarding players for using all their weapons – something I really like seeing. The eighth weapon, the BFG, has a second “mode” that is actually a separate weapon in the same slot, both of which use the BFG ammo – a rare drop, but it makes sense, as the BFG can wipe out most enemies in a single shot, while the other weapon can lay down heavy damage very rapidly as well.

The only downside of the combat system is that the higher difficulty levels mostly function by making the enemies more bullet spongey and making you take more damage. While not the end of the world, it can make enemies a little on the annoyingly damage soaky side in Ultra-violence mode, the second highest difficulty level, and you can die pretty fast. That said, the combat is pretty well-balanced even on that mode, and I made it through the entire campaign without changing the difficulty level or using the optional temporary powerup sentinel armor, which serves as a means of helping players who get stuck. Still, there were some encounters (particularly optional ones) that killed me repeatedly, and some of the bosses were a bit frustrating.

Indeed, the second to last boss was a low point of the game – while cool visually, the boss primarily functioned by making the ground do damage. While “stay out of the bad” is a classic boss tactic, it is less fun in a FPS, where you have a restricted field of view – doubly so given that the boss flew overhead, so the “bad” was not visible from your FOV on the ground while shooting up at her.

However, apart from a few niggles, the combat was pretty good. The same cannot be said about the rest of it.

The game has a story, but the story is confusing, as it does not pick up where DOOM 2016 left off, but some time later. Moreover, it just isn’t very good – the DOOM Slayer is not much of a character, having no dialogue, and mostly just seeming rather angry. Other characters talk AT you, but it isn’t very interesting. Moreover, what plot IS there isn’t particularly interesting even apart from the main character – it feels a bit generic fantasy, which is doubly weird given it is a sci-fi setting. The DOOM Slayer brushing off the story in the first game was funny, but it didn’t work nearly as well here, because they were more intimately involved with the goings on, the plot being more important but also more confusing and mediocre.

It is even more awkward considering one of the levels is pretty much entirely story content, and while it finally makes the story make more sense, it doesn’t actually make the story GOOD.

As a result, I’m left feeling like this was a pretty good game, but it was far from perfect. It improved on DOOM (2016) in a number of ways, but also took a step backwards in others.

    FUN BUT DUMB.

This game is LOTS of fun. There isn't any mood, and it's just one arena battle after another. On one hand, that sucks; but on the other hand, it is FAST action, and FULL of action. On the flip side, THIS STORY IS JUST MIND-BENDINGLY STUPID. I mean, they started putting some sort of interesting story together in 2016, but this one is just amazing in its ridiculousness. It feels like the story from the original Doom back in the day (90's?); like, they made a neat game and said afterwords, "Oh yeah. We need some story here. Where's Hobo-Carl? Give him a pen."

So as far as FUN goes, I give this game a solid 7/10; the relative scarcity of non-arena action pulls it down. As far as the rest of it goes? Christ... 2? 3?

So is it worth buying? If you're looking SOLELY for action, then yes. If you're looking for an engaging game that pulls you into it? Firm no. (I'm SLIGHTLY glad I bought it; thank God it was on sale for $20.)

REVISION: All of the above is still the same, but I can't play this any longer. Got to 2/3 through, and it's just the same thing: arena battle over and over and over. Got bored. Not gonna finish it.

No crafting you own path to combat, no favorite gun to max out, just a very typical take on a new version of DOOM. Id rather go play Quake champions if I wanted this type of gameplay. This game would not be anywhere near as successful if it did not stand on the shoulders of 2016, which was magnificent.

The game is good. But thats it, its ok. What got me in Doom 2016 was the environmental exploration, there are some neat QoL improvements here, but also, it feels shallow. The new additions to the combat didn't click with me, and the way they told the story this time around also didn't peak my interest. All in all, fun combat, but not an improvement in any way to Doom 2016.

This game is everything a modern Doom should be, and feels as if the series got regular entries throughout the years and got better every time. There are much more weapons than last time, and each of them has a usecase. The art and sound direction are insane (the Makyr chapter is one of the most mesmerizing levels I've seen in a shooter, only being beaten by Zen in Black Mesa). I'd say the quality here is on par or even better than Titanfall 2. I'm judging it for the singleplayer only, I have no interest in playing the multiplayter. No weapon is too many, each enemy has a weakness that requires a different weapon, which motivates you to use all weapons and improve them, which is an incentive for exploration to look for improvements, tokens and suits, which by the way, the levels They are very well done, so those slowdowns do not feel forced at all, and they are a pleasure thanks to the clever platform design and a few puzzles that, while easy, are still entertaining. The ammunition is more scarce than in the previous one which forces you to use the chainsaw intelligently. I would have liked to see more boss fights, but the truth is that the ones that exist are very well done, in addition to the fact that the construction of each level and the appearance of new demons makes the game not feel repetitive at all, even despite that there are not so many bosses.
The game also has secondary levels and challenges that offer playable rewards and high replayability, and by itself the campaign is fun enough to make you want to replay it on another difficulty, in fact I liked the game so much that at the time I played on PS4 and now that I switched to PC I bought it because the game is worth it.

Well doom is doom a damon killer simulator and that is about it. Is fun and all but it has such a plain story almost inexistent even though is a way longer story and you can even call it a story.. i guess.. than the one they made in doom 2016. Combat is fun, animations are cool, the controls of the character feels old, without wheight like and that is all what i can say about this game.

Better than 2016 Doom. Story added more depth to it and world felt more immersive than 2016 Doom.

This game is actually amazing. If you're pondering on buying it, you should get it. even on ultra nightmare, my PC is still hitting a clear 60 fps even though i don't even have a good graphics card. Right now, it's also in sale on steam for 20 bucks, and that was when I bought it. Overall, amazing graphics, intense gameplay, and a good story.

Is there anything I don't like in this game? Absolutely no! Great graphic and insanely fast action. I wish I would have more time to play it. Highly recommended.

DOOM Eternal is pretty much a tougher and better game than its 2016 predecessor, gameplay-wise, it's perfect. The guns, the sound, the music, the atmosphere, is outstanding. The graphics are pretty good for a 2020 game and the story was fairly palatable. I've said enough. Go play the game for yourself, I highly reccomend it, 9/10

Not the same, as Doom 2016, but still one of the best shooters I've ever played. In-game soundtrack is awesome.

I did not play the first doom very much only 2 hours. Doom eternal on the other hand i played and beat it. The only problem i have with this game is the length/replability of it. Once i beat it(17.4 hours) i did not feel the need to play it anymore. I bought this game for half off and for that price it is 100% worth it

Gotta be honest i wasn't biggest fan of doom eternal at first, but after all these fails like resident evil 3 remake, marvel's avengers, last of us 2, cyberpunk 2077, i would honestly say that doom eternal was one of the best games of 2020.

We want bigger explosions. For me GOTY 2020. Crazy paced action, nothing is too much. We want BIGGER explosions! Killer soundtrack and sound, that pulls me into action even more. We want BIGGER EXPLOSIONS!! I really enjoyed it and forgot about everyday life on this puny little earth. WE WANT BIGGER EXPLOSIONS!!!!!!!

One of the best games of 2020, extremely enjoyable action-shooter. I like it even more than Doom 2016 tbh.

If the 2016 Doom was a retelling of the original Doom, then this one would be a retelling of Doom 2, since the former took place on Mars and the latter took place on Earth.

I struggled with coming up with a score for this one, because there are things I really love about it and things I really hate. What I love -- it looks great and sounds great, and it's fun to just blast the hell

What I love -- it looks great and sounds great, and it's fun to just blast the hell out of everything.

What I hate -- There are too many spots in this game where you have to rely on a serious of fancy jumps, and if you miss, you might have to go back and do all the other ones again because apparently the game developers thought that gamers were saying, "You know what I really hate? Being able to save my game whenever I want to!" Which also gets frustrating when you get to a point where a seemingly endless wave of enemies keeps coming at you. A challenge is one thing, but there were a few spots where I was stuck for more than was enjoyable because I was running around, killing everything, trying not to get hit, for what seemed like an eternity, only to get killed and have to go back to the beginning because again, no save option. I know the 2016 didn't let you save either, but I don't remember ever getting stuck in the same spot for too long. I actually gave up on some of the side challenges on this one because I got frustrated after awhile and just wanted to move on.

As I do with most games, I start out with what I perceive as the "medium" setting. I think if I decide to play through this one again, I might try the easiest one.

As with the previous game, there isn't much of a storyline. Not saying that's a bad thing, just personal preferences. Maybe a little more of a storyline than the originals, but not as much of one as Doom 3.

I get why some people don't like the fact that you have to constantly be utilizing your cool down abilities to have enough ammo, or health to survive. I had this same problem when I started the game where I was constantly running out of ammo, but once I realized I'm supposed to be using my chainsaw in every encounter to replenish my limited ammo, I started **** loving this game. Great game to play through, good fun for slaying demons. On the other hand, the story is fairly confusing, this is probably as much to do with poor communication of the story to the player. After playing the final levels you do feel as though you have accomplished something even though you're not really sure what. Best shooter ever. The parkour system and the collectibles are very good. The graphics and optimization are awesome. Just one thing is bad and thi one is the game is too long. I am very bored last 3 hours. But other things are very good.

The game is simply amazing, the optimization is PERFECT.

No glitches, bugs, framerate drops since DAY ONE.
The music is on point with the gameplay, and shooting to enemies is satisfying af.
One of the best FPS game I've ever played, if you're insecure about purchasing it or not... DO IT, NOW.

It lost completely the soul of what doom was at some point in time, fast action shooting without all those rpg elements and stupid upgrades and more. then all the stupid jumping and dashing. I miss the simple levels searching for keys with rooms full of monsters. All those adds destroyed the fun for me and gave up after about 5-6 hours.

So much better than Doom (2016), this one at least tries to be fun. All my favorite demons are back and some new one looks pretty cool. If i could choose, this would win Game of the Year award, not that it matters, but anything is better than Last of Us Part II.

I can understand that people who just played this casually failed to enjoy it, its a very demanding game after all. But whoever puts in the time to master it will find the beset combat expirience that videogames can provide. absolute masterpiece, its just wonderful to see a triple aaa developer who is this confident, focused and commited in creating a game. 10/10

Game of the year award list doesn't have exactly best nominations, but out these that are there, Doom Eternal is easy win.

If you're looking for a deep and thought-provoking gaming experience that changes your outlook on life, look elsewhere. However, if you want a fast-paced, visceral shooter full of non-stop action and outrageous violence, you can't do better than Doom Eternal. If you liked 2016's offering you will love this follow up. It's a hell of a good time.

Like Jason Statham’s character in Crank, Doom Eternal needs adrenaline every waking second. So long as you drown hordes of demons in their own blood, it feels like a perfect GOTY contender, but during quiet moments, Doom Eternal withers and forces you to ponder unpleasant questions. id Software needs to course-correct, otherwise we’ll be playing Super Doom Slayer’s Bros in a few years.
