This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Diablo IV - walking simulator on rails.

Starts off with pay to win 30€ early access and a non-ssf HC "race" dominated by group play spam-resetting the same dungeon over and over.

Boring itemization and barebones skill-twig ("tree") with minimal effective choice.
The monster killing portion of the gameplay is good, everything else is not.

Every town is deliberately horribly ineffective in terms of crafting / storing stuff, requiring one to walk back and forth for a minute or two depending on the use case, of course the horse isn't allowed to gallop inside and near towns.

The endgame is weaker than path of exile was literally 10 years ago. Nightmare Dungeons require a 1-2 minute walk every time, incentivizing preparing a set of identical dungeons, so that you don't have to walk there every time. Each "unique" dungeon has always the same boring objectives and boss (if there even is one) and requires backtracking, sometimes requiring players to backtrack for multiple minutes per dungeon. To top it off, there's only 22 dungeons that can be nightmare dungeons, despite there being 100+ in the game.

The level-scaling is absolutely mind-boggling. Zones that are lower level than you will downscale your character, meaning you technically get weaker per level in low-level zones, similarly, monsters that are higher level than you gain damage reduction and deal more damage to you.

The "trade system" is ridiculous. Any item that's legendary or unique cannot be traded. Any item that's been upgraded by the black smith cannot be traded. In other words, any item that you use becomes account bound and can at best be reused by another of your characters. This also means that most* account bound item upgrades make the prior item absolutely worthless.
Furthermore, the level requirement of items is at least as high as your current level, this means you could find a rare item (that would normally only require level 60 to equip that would be useful to your friend or another character of yours), BUT they'll need to reach your level, so even if you happen to find something useful for another character (which is rare to begin with thanks to "smart loot"), you can't use it anyway unless that other character is on a similar level.

Hardcore is kind of a joke. There is cheat death elixirs farmable for everyone and a cheat death mechanic for sorcerer, in combination with the scroll of escape. This means that for example the pinnacle level 100 boss can be killed with zero risk of death.

Last but not least is stash space and console-port. The entire UI is obviously designed for consoles and doesn't feel or look good on pc, for example, one cannot search in the stash or on the skill/paragon tree (except for predefined terms LOL). You start off with one stash tab (10x5), every item takes up one stash slot (gems and elixirs are stackable) and can have up to 4 stash tabs. Those 4 tabs fill up very quickly with even one character.

This is of course is an incomplete list of current issues.

I very much like the changes they've made with Diablo IV to mix a lot of the best things about Diablo 2 & Diablo 3 together. This is a very different game than the former games and every day I look forward to playing it after my children are in bed.

A lot of the criticism in the 0 ratings force people like myself who love the game but could actually put real constructive criticisms to simply choose 10. The 0 ratings involve ridiculous complaints about microtransactions that you never need to even look at. The game is a slower game by nature, in every Diablo game. You can jump anywhere using waypoints & later you can ride a horse with speed boosts to go faster.

The fights are a lot of fun and require you to figure out what mechanics the bosses use in order to avoid taking too much damage.

The story is excellent, as expected with Diablo games. There are so many options for customizing your characters made up of the 5 classes that I expect to play this at least 500 hours before I need a break.

I've had no issues connecting to the server. I've had a few issues with connection drops & getting stuck, but nothing too bad with first week of a game that will continuously get better over the next several years.

Anyone who gives this a 0 is making some sort of statement that has nothing to do with the fun of the game.

If I could have rated it normally, it would've been 8-9 as there are tedious things that could be made better. I would like to see a gem tab, because they fill up the inventory too much. I would like to see them adjust the text to never show up as the same color as the environment. Finally, I'd like to see them add the ability to auto pick up and salvage normal & magical items by enabling in settings. That way if we advance beyond that gear we can continue to gather ingredients while not filling our inventory with junk.

Boring, All the gear modifiers are the same, All the rings/amulets are the same. But it doesn't matter that all the gear is the same, because the enemies all scale to whatever level you are, so you will always pretty much do the same damage.
You are punished for levelling in this game.
If you liked the original D1 D2 games, you will really really hate this.
    Complete waste of money.

This game is ....literally EVERYTHING that was horrible with DIABLO 3, dusted, regurgitated and turned to 11. No feedback has been taken into account from veteran D1 and D2 LoD players AT ALL.
POWER comes again FROM ITEMS (not skills and investment in them)
IDIOTIC modifiers on certain skills available on items
    NO RUNES
    NO TRADE
    NO PVP

Game has a decent base. Combat is fun but there are too many missing QoL things they havent learned from d2 d3 somehow?

Also some really annoying bugs but that’s more expected with a new game at the end of the day. Their approach to disabling items and quick super nerfs does not feel good. They need to release a “feel good” buffs patch ASAP, to appease the community. Endgame does

Endgame does feel pretty shallow since its pretty much ONLY nightmare dungeons atm. Having to ride the awful horse each time is getting real old real fast. Side activities inside the dungeons are an automatic skip because they aren’t well designed/rewarding and some of the dungeon require missions to proceed just feel bad and clunky.

A lot of this stuff could really be made sooo much better so quickly but who knows how their sprints pipeline look like atm…

Tree of whispers, world boss and helltides arent really very relevant activities so it really makes you feel like there is something missing for now.

I like the graphics and the story generally speaking. It's always been a strong side for blizz.

Generic, boring, repetitive and offers no real challenge. Extremely pricey.

Putting everything aside, what disappointed me the most was the fact that the "Return to darkness" was a lie. Even with better graphics the game does not even get close to offering you the same immersion and feeling that D2 used to have (as it was proposed). If you're part of the team that spent years working on this title, then I feel absolutely terrible for you, which is similar to how it feels to play the game. It is a hot, hot mess.
    - bugs, bugs and more bugs
    - Atrocious user interface
    - Graphics either stutter constantly or look gross when turned down to manage framerate
    - monetization is audacious and conceited for an already 70 USD purchase [see in game $ shop]
    - numerous, fundamental game design and gameplay mechanics decisions that either do not work [do not accomplish the thing they were meant to], do not make sense or just feel bad to experience. Too many to list with character limit
    - embarrassing character design further hobbled by extremely deficient customization options. There are 4 faces vs. 34 different jewelry combinations? No body sliders either. As if.
    - once again the design is so bad that there a multiple instances where we’re not sure if it’s a bug or not
    – balance? As in - of all the different possible playstyles of the available classes each ‘build’ should ideally fall within a standard deviation of the mean. It’s ok to have a clear and obvious best, as long as it’s not exponentially more powerful than any other choice, and that’s just regarding by-the-numbers analysis. Players ALSO want each popular build to FEEEEEEL GOOD and be FUN. If it’s making big damage numbers and never dying, but it’s boring, frustrating, too simple or too complicated then what’s the point?
    – I remember before open beta some content creators and influencers having played the game saying that combat was good. That it ‘felt’ good….i don’t trust those people anymore. They may have been referring instead to combat responsiveness as far as actually pressing the buttons, but i’m playing a necromancer and a lot of the time when try to use a corpse, nothing happens until a full second later i find out why because that corpse ‘despawned’ but was still visible…just pretending i guess. And why do corpses have to despawn as others are generated? If we’re THAT limited by what hardware or the engine is capable of [and i'm not convinced we are] but if it is that bad, then just generate fewer corpses in the first place and then balance using corpses to compensate. But I digress, got really into the weeds there. Combat feel really bad to me
-- story? Not sure, only made it through the first act so far. This is your excuse to disregard me because all the things I'm talking about…what, get better after act 2? Act 3? When I reach level 70 or 90? Sorry, story: uuuh, not terrible but certainly not good. It’s just a little bad. While there’s objective ways to analyze good or bad writing, I’m willing to relegate my verdict to a subjective opinion. ACT I SPOILERS - meeting Lorath [and his VOICE actor! Yeah!] is nice, but then he takes off…oh well. Then we get stuck with Leah…i mean honestly i forgot her name, but she’s just a more diverse Leah. She does the Leah type things. Here, let me open this door for you with the power of smol, or here let me open this OTHER door for you with the power of smert! this guy that will later straight up boast to a literal angel that you’re gonna track down and kill Lilith. That’s the kind of person that needs help opening things. Yeah sure, its magic whatever, it’s also trite, it’s not interesting. Umm, i don’t think story has ever really been diablo’s core skill - to me the games with less were more. Story in this series should be seen and not heard. Imagine diablo as a game saying: i’m here to shred demons and introduce sappy sympathetic archetypes to deliver exposition and inject motivation, and i’m all out of sappy sympathetic archetypes! That being said i’m a HUGE fan of side quests and there’s even a couple side quest sequels that add a little arch to their story, and those were neat i liked those. Okay. why do i care more about the lady with the axe or the hard-boiled exorcist than i do helping Leah…i mean whoever deal with her mommy issues? My guess is less was more.
    - voice acting and writing: **** Yeah! Aaaaand then the rest of the cast - this too, is an unpopular opinion of mine. The actors individually have good or decent quality, but the directing of them is almost always over the top cringe. Like, okay just…i get it, just bring it down to like a 5 or a 6 from where you are, okay? It’s also hard, admittedly, to separate the VA from the writing. You can only do so much with what you’re given. There were some lines that worked, but overall just felt like too schlocky or melodramatic. Get out of the way. I’m already battling the forces of evil, just let that experience speak for itself

I like it better than all the other Diablo games. Better story, longer more in depth characters, some emotion. I appreciated it all.

If I HAD to be critical, it's the notion that I'd have to make a new character for seasons. But so far, I've had a great time with it. I'm happy I picked it up.

It is not the worst game on the market, but I am sure that without "Diablo" name behind it and all the hype created by Blizzard no one in his right mind would pay 70+ bucks for this title.

The game's horrible gameplay and shameless in-game monetization practices have left me feeling betrayed and disillusioned.
    Abysmal Gameplay Mechanics

The core gameplay in Diablo 4 is a far cry from the engaging and addictive experiences we had in previous installments. The combat system feels clunky and unresponsive, making even the most basic encounters feel like a chore. The skill trees and character progression have been severely dumbed down, offering little in the way of meaningful choices or customization.

Enemy AI is laughably bad, with foes either standing still and waiting to be hit or mindlessly rushing toward the player with no regard for tactics or self-preservation. This lack of challenge and variety makes for a dull, monotonous experience that quickly grows tiresome.

But truly, the ingame monetization is despicable; baiting players to buy in-game items is greedy and insulting. Do not buy this game unless you want a lackluster experience combined with a buy more now complex.

Diablo 4 is something that was truly anticipated for years. And therefore it hits harder that it is just a mixed bag of Diablo 3 (before it got polished, nowadays it is a solid ARPG in many regards) and Diablo Immortal. This game is no 10/10 and it is not black white to also give it a 0. It has good graphics (likewise to DI for terrain, but more polished to PC performance) and campaign/story - that is the good part. Now the bad: Itemization simple for monkey brain. Complexity and true skilltree choices that matter to make something special outside the box of what the developers intented to make as a build is missing completely. In the current state it does not even have sets, runewords or anything to do when you reached 100. The journey to 100 was ok, but the progression felt like you are losing and there is no anticipation whatsoever to get anything particularly worthy as item or reward when you continue the grind. It is also too easy, not only can anybody easily oversee the best choice to make in skills and points, but also there is no challenge whatsoever. Mobs need too long to die, while making not enough damage. I played to 100 HC in 70 hours and experienced everything once and killed it. I didnt have one challenge, where I died. The fixed hotkeys for the 6 skills, while having to pick, as intended for the developed build, a primary skill and set skillpoints in it, a secondary and so on, makes it just worse. People are given too much hand and developers thought for them instead of giving them itemization and complexity so the players can create something new, that was not intended before. Lastly I can say that the shop is just Diablo Immortal 2.0 . But this is not f2p. You pay 70-100 bucks and afterwards you pay 20 for battlepass monthly (when it ll release, ....) + many mtx , up to more than 100 bucks for the platinum package with almost 800% extra value. It is a joke and I rate it 4.6/10.

PS: I have to add, that I checked the 10/10 reviews, which were there first and it is very obvious that most of them are paid or bots. Like amazon recommendations or anything is faked nowadays. You can often see that the blockbusters of all genres, which were released, all got 10/10 from these persons. Or they are just new accounts

EDIT: NO HUD OVERLAY :D - yes in an ARPG Diablo , better skip this one

    EDIT2: lowered score from 5/10 to 2/10

As someone who used to absolutely love Blizzard and their products, it will unfortunately be a tough sell to get me to spend my money on anything they produce again. Expand

The game is god awful for the price. I won't drone on with all the same complaints others have had but they're right. Also this Reddit post gets it right. But look at all the Blizzard teat sucklers in there refusing to come to terms with how bad the game is. I sure hope the price goes down and the available content goes up.The game is god awful for the price. I won't drone on with all the same complaints others have had but they're right. I am posting review sfter more than 20 hourd of gameplay.
The game is awesome! I played diablo 2 and 3 and the remastered d2.
This one is great. Storytelling, voice acting, cinematics, graphics etc. Boss fights are fun, at least most of them. But hey nothing is 100% perfect!
The gameplay mechanics are quiet similar to D2 so no comment on that one.

All in all, frest game Blizzard!

    This is a joke, right?
$70 for repeating tiles on a map (so that I literally have to repeatedly look at the big map to confirm Im not running in a circle), low texture quality, movies now in in-game graphics mostly, like in WoW (which looks horrible up close), MMO-like quests (get 10 of this and that), you can now get stunlocked by mobs and cant even use a potion while that happens. And on top theres also a battlepass.

I wanted to give Blizzard another chance, but basically scamming me like that (at least I didnt get the $100 version), for a lazily produced POS like this? I wont forget that ever.
They are lucky there are no returns possible, and they obviously designed the game so that you cant see the biggest issues in the first 2 hours of the game (where a refund is possible). I wont forget that either.
Oh yeah, it also has massive loading-stutters, even on the fastest SSD you can get and massive rubberbanding, even when youre just on your own. You can and will die to both.

Seriously, in 2023, you release an RPG game where the only crafting option is to reroll a single parameter on items. It's funny, just as funny as getting 1 million per click during recrafting... Endgame farming by walking from instance to instance is also quite ridiculous =)))

As it currently stands a very mediocre console feeling cash grab game, can list about 100 problems that need fixing including:

itemisation, nothing to do at end game, only 1-2 viable specs for each class if that, most efficient way to lvl is just grinding the same dungeon over and over, world map and waypoints not being given on second chars, infinite things in the game to waste

    dungeons are boring and stale,
camera too zoomed in are just a few of them.

There is the potential for a great game under all the **** if blizzard actually listen to the fan base and not the casual dad gamers who play for 2 hours a week. But lets face it, the chance of that happening is next to zero, they will almost certainly give it a few seasons and then leave a skeleton dev team on it and let it die just like d3. They've made their money from the initial sales, they don't care now.

It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
