Lacks all the features that made diablo 2 great. Hardly any randomization in levels, boring stat system where only one stat per character class is important, no real character builds with skills and so on, dumb boss fights with cutscenes, no nice loot runs and it had a stupid real money auction house at launch as well which is just moneygrubbing.

Very few positive things to say about this title. So much expectation for an expensive title with so limited content, missing variety, options, built according to feedback years after release, absence of real multiplayer , terrible balance during first 2 years. Nonsense storyline. Development based only on items

    Graphics are good for 2012

I seriously doubt that Blizzard will recreate the gloomy hopeless atmosphere of the original. It has no distinct character, there is no graphical distinction between the wow Diablo or Starcraft universes they all have the same lighthearted humor, flashy graphics and character archetypes. Diablo was never about that, it was about exploring a grim dungeon trying to save what is left of a small village with a dark history. Diving deeper into the abyss. Even Titanfall after release was more exciting than Diablo III. Sad that Blizzard thinks about new generation of kids and doesn't care about oldschool gamers.

I've played Diablo 1, Diablo II and later fell in love with Diablo II: Lord Of Destruction in which I spent a lot of time replaying it.

This game sold purely on it's name. The core gameplay is nothing like it's predecessors. If you liked DIablo 1 or 2 I do not recommend this game. However it is a playable generic hack and slash game. For more Diablo I'd recommend Path of Exile or Grim Dawn.

I've followed Blizzards troubleshooting guidelines with no success and have submitted numerous tickets. If you're lucky enough you may get a vague reply back which only adds to the frustration. One would think after spending countless hours troubleshooting a problem that you could just call and talk to a live representative and have then walk you through the steps to resolve the issue bit that would nearly be dreaming. I would not recommend this game to anyone as the game is full of bugs and the tech support is brutal. Hopefully they can change this in their two upcoming diablo games. Low and behold we got a Warcraft game that was desperately trying to be Diablo-like in all the wrong ways. When I saw the first videos of gameplay I was taken back. The amount of reused assets as well as the warcraft-like aesthetic and lighting really ruined this game for me. For years I had been craving a fresh, dark, gritty, and lonesome experience that is iconic to the Diabo franchise but instead, we all got this nonsense. The storytelling is light-hearted and has too much comic relief, it feels more in the spirit of a WoW side quest. Throughout my entire playthrough, I never felt the 'jump-in-your-chair' fear that previous titles had. This game is 'spoopy' at best; like Luigi's Mansion, but it's not even cute. It's obvious that the out-of-touch exec's calling the shots had their heads so far up their a**es that they thought they could just carry the successful aspects of Warcraft over to Diablo.
Not to mention, the online requirement is essentially the game industry admitting defeat in the battle against piracy. The fact that you make the game more difficult to play legitimately than a pirated version is just the biggest f**k you to your paying fans, but then again I don't understand why anyone would want to pirate this waste of hard drive space.

Bosses of Diablo 1 make a comeback in the most cringe way. The Butcher pops into an arena-like boss room in cleaned-up kiddie-friendly way, looking all cuddly like a Saturday morning cartoon. The boss room is sterile and devoid of any blood - nothing like when you met him in the far superior Diablo 1.
The classes are lackluster as well. Of the base game only the Wizard was good. The Add-on at least gave us the Crusader which I found to be the only class worth playing. If you want the Diablo 2 favorite Necromancer be prepared to fork out more $ for an add-on that only gives you that class and nothing else.
Diablo 3 has zero identity. Everything that made D1 & D2 so great is gone. Then D3 recycles the entire 2nd Act of D2 in Act 2 of D3. The new art style is terrible and Blizzard just mocked fans for complaining about it.

Diablo III vanilla was confused about what it should be. It was an ARPG that tried to be an MMO, and failed at being both.

Fewer kinds of gems than the predecessor, a clear defined endgame, boring copy-paste builds, no depth in gameplay, and a downright broken class balance.

I bought this on a whim packaged with Diablo 2 Resurrected. I found the Necromancer to be really boring, so I switched to Barbarian and had a wonderful time. I did notice that there was a whole lot of streamlining compared to the previous games but I was havin fun.

Then I started a new game and saw it was not just streamlined, it was simplified to such a degree that it almost feels like a mobile game. I had fun once, but there was no replay value at all, and the fun I did have was more due to the basic Diablo elements, and not from any particular thing that is new to Diablo 3.

Basically, every class has an identical skill loadout now. They're all even labelled with the same categories, with Left Click being "weak attack/spell", Right Click being "stronger attack/spell", etcetera. Number 4 being big huge special skill with the longest cooldown timer.

There's a lot fewer skills overall, but they have variations on them with "runes" which are just sub-settings for the skill.

The whole of the gameplay revolves around these skills. There aren't any more attacks with weapons, so to speak; you can put a sword or spear on a necromancer or a wizard but they will never actually use them, unlike Diablo 1 and 2. They're just numbers adding to the damage done by the skills.

The whole game is like this, all ground down to a bland numbers game. And the game absolutely loves its frigging numbers. In Diablo 1 and 2, you were using weapons generally that did damages like 2 to 6 damage, 8 to 20, 100 to 200 for highest levels, hundreds of HP, hundreds of armor.

In this game, the numbers literally go into the millions and billions. Number pop-ups when you deal damage show when your attacks do damage, going up to literally hundreds of thousands by mid-high level, and HP going into the tens of millions or hundreds of millions for highest level bosses.

What's the point of this huge number inflation other than to waste screen space?

Actual combat overall has basically been cut down to just one specific style. Every single group of enemies is a pack of dozens. Almost all the skills you get are area of effect damage skills. Combat always amounts to "use the skill that does the most splash damage". You get XP boosts for combo kills, which very easily go into the dozens in just a single encounter. It almost cheapens the combat experience as you're no longer actually clicking on enemies to try to kill them, but just mashing the clicker wherever you can hit the most number of enemies at once. If it were a zombie movie, Diablo 1/2 would be more like Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead and Diablo 3 would be like World War Z.

Virtually everything that previously served a purpose in D1/D2 returns in D3, but not to actually serve a purpose but just as nostalgia bait. "Remember potions?" There's no potions anymore, BUT there is a health potion button you can press for free health and a 30 second cooldown. "Remember runes and gems and the horadric cube recipes?" Some of that is here, but you have to spend gold to upgrade, spend gold to upgrade gems, and the gems effects have been simplified, with only chest armor and weapon sockets havin unique boosts.

"Remember unidentified weapons and scrolls of identify?" There's still unidentified weapons, but they are extremely rare, and you can identify them for free in town. "Remember the town portal scrolls?" Town portal is now free and available to you at any time with no cooldown. Worse, there's also waypoints but you can use them literally anywhere and at any time. They're no longer like waypoints of D2 but just permanent town portals you can access from anywhere.

As well, there is no real Singleplayer mode. You have to be connected at all times, even if you want to play by yourself. And you will be playing by yourself, in 2023, because there's so many different game modes, all subdivided by difficulty (of which there's literally like 12 or more difficulty levels) and by level, and almost no way of keeping track of other players outside of a game, so you can spend a hundred hours in a public game and literally never see another person ever.

If you've never played a Diablo game before, this would be a fun enough one-time single player experience. If you've played Diablo 2, all you can really focus on is how much everything has been streamlined, to such a degree that you barely feel like you're playing a full fledged AAA game, instead of a quick, cheap mobile or arcade game to bang around in while on the toilet or waiting for the dentist.

Diablo 3. Where do I begin? When you first start the game, you're immediately greeted by a reminiscent from the World of Warcraft, the login screen. And like in WoW or other MMOs, with the login screen you also get the various login errors. Error 37, Error 3005, and the usual problems with an online game launch...

"Wait! What's that about MMOs? Wasn't this supposed to be a single player game?", you ask. Yeah, except you need an always-on internet connection at any time you play the game. "Why?", you ask. Because of the online DRM, and the Real-money Auction House, and... "Wait, what?!" Exactly, but let's not even go there just yet. The point is, Blizzard had 9 (that's nine) years to develop this game, several stress tests during the beta, and their experience with WoW launch - one would think, to hone and polish everything. Turns out nothing went as expected because even two weeks(!) after the launch, the servers were still having problems and people couldn't log in or play the game they had paid for, two weeks ago. Okay, the worst problems were fixed afterwards, but that was a good reminder of why you should not have an online DRM forced into a game, unless it's really, really necessary. But in a single player game!? That's madness!

Ok, we get it. Because Blizzard decided to implement the Real-money Auction House into Diablo 3, they needed a way to secure their asses and make sure the game or items sold in the AH would not get tampered or changed in any way. That's alright - if this was a MMO online game! But it's not! Diablo has always been a single player game (featuring a co-op mode). We don't need to be online at all times. We don't need the Real-money Auction House (What kind of idiot would pay real money for virtual game items, anyway?), and we don't need the always online DRM! Madness! That's madness, and greed!

But wait, that's not all of it. The worst part is, the game is boring! Yeah, it's hack-n-slash dungeon crawling, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the story, and the content. It's boring, predictable, and short! You can finish the game in 4 hours and it starts to repeat itself really fast. Everything after the Act 1 is just bad. There simply is not enough things to do! No character to customize, because the choices are made for you. No skills to choose, because you unlock them all with no effort. Nothing to achieve, nothing to gain, except farm better items... No, wait! You can buy them from the Real-money Auction House... Sigh!

There is also the graphics thing, and many more design flaws.. eh, choices, where Blizzard could've and should've improved the game, but they didn't. Instead, they took away all those things that made Diablo and Diablo 2 fun and challenging, and added things we didn't need in the first place. I guess that's what happens when you kick out the original developers and make a whole different people with no experience or proper vision of the previous games to design a sequel to one of the best game franchises ever. (And this is not to put down or belittle the developers skills, only to say the game you made was not the one the customers expected, or were made to expect.) Or, perhaps it could be because nowadays at Blizzard, it seems, the people who get to decide about things, are more interested in whole lot of other things (namely, money) than the enjoyment and excitement for games and entertainment, they once did. Things have been going downhill ever since the Blizzard became the ActivisionBlizzard.

I honestly in my right mind can't imagine how the majority of professional game critics gave this game a 9 or 10! Were you paid or are you just mindless ass-kissers? I'm giving it a score of 1, for the Act 1. Everything else was crap. (Nine years, Blizzard!)

TL;DR: It looks like a Diablo, it plays like a Diablo, but it is not a Diablo! This game might just be the biggest scam in modern video game history. If you love Diablo and value your time and money, avoid this game. If you are looking for a spiritual successor to Diablo, try Torchlight 2 (from the original Diablo team) or even a free game, called Path of Exile.

very dated graphics- I understand the desire to sell to a broader audience, but limited animations, single viewpoint, and screen shake?! The enemies all look like mannequins rather than hellspawn beasts. I was more afriad of Doom 2 monsters than these! No single player/DRM -enough people have mentioned this
Customization- much like what happened with WoW Cataclysm, there is no more choice in development. I dont want to play like other people; let me choose, let me fail if that is the case. All skills are granted as the character increases in level. There are no attribute or skill points to customize your character.
Overall just boring- maybe the game will intensify with the the 'higher difficulties' (read: stat padded mobs), but I can forsee this game becoming a very one-dimensional gear farming title. Quests are not at all memorable or exciting, nor are they class specific.
Now that people can 'play to pwn" with the real money auction house, Blizzard is just sucking the money from gamers who simply do not know better (the ~300 people that have given this game positive reviews thus far).

I was able to quit WoW with ease after how bad Cataclysm let me down, and now I will get a refund for this complete waste of $60. Well done Blizzard, you just lost a customer who had been loyal since 1997. At least there is still Valve!

When a potion costs you 100+gold So you need to collect several inventories full just to buy 1 potion. Wasting about 5 potions doing so. The bosses feel unoriginal and less unique than older games and unique monsters feel less than thrilling to find. Shrines feel USELESS. The only thing going for this game is a beautiful art style. I liked the old story line in D2 where you unlocked a different story where you get to see what happened and how it happened. While in D3 the cut scenes are just cut scenes of the story you just went through almost like a recap. This is very much pay to win game who ever invests the most money will have the best gear and not really a game of skill.. Expand

Assuming you could play the game problem free its probably worth an 8, but the fact I can not play it, and as yet have been unable to maintain a solid connection due to Blizzards servers being overloaded and underprepared makes the 8 irrelevent, I officially give this game a 1 because its unplayable which by definition means its a bad game.

It's pretty much World of Warcraft with a higher camera angle. Did the new Blizzard devs even play the older Diablo games? The game lacks soul, the art is good but it's not gloomy - everything to too vibrant. You can tell Blizzard 2.0 could care less about voice acting, they hired people for cheap and you can hear it.

Subsequent playthroughs on higher difficulties are challenging but not as much fun. On Inferno difficulty some of the champion creature packs are literally unbeatable even with the best gear. If you run into one with certain combinations of attributes you have to exit the game and restart the quest and pray the next lot won't be as ridiculous. Seriously! That's not good game design. Also, some of the poor dialog left me feeling a little let down. The constant over-the-top monologuing by the villains leaves you thinking you are watching a bad anime cartoon and in Act IV Diablo gets a weird metro-sexual accent that leaves him sounding more like a dandy-boy than a bad guy. If he had told me my armor was "fabulous" I would not have been surprised. Very un-Lord-of-Terror like. Maybe Princess of Terror would be more fitting. I know there is an explanation in the story for it but it still sounds quite bad.

My biggest disappointment with the game is not really with Diablo 3 itself but in the way Blizzard treats it's customers and their insane security policies. Diablo 3's game description boasts a RMAH (Real Money Auction House) but neglects to inform potential buyers that you MUST have a cell phone with a contract in order to use it unless you just want useless "Blizzard Bucks". You can't even use the "Blizzard Bucks" to pay for Blizzard services like a WoW subscription. That's not real money. That's utterly useless. Pre-paid phones won't work and Blizzard doesn't even maintain the databases that tell them if you have one or not. My phone is on a contract but the number was once on a pre-paid plan years ago (with a completely different carrier no less) and neither carrier claims they can change the database to reflect the contract status. Blizzard hits that database when I try to tie my phone to SMS Protect and blindly assumes I'm lying and simply tells me I'm out of luck unless I buy a new contract with AT&T. Even then it might not work if I get another number with the same problem (extremely common judging by the posts on hundreds of message boards including their own). Their customer service is useless and all but told me outright I was a loser and needed to get a real phone with a contract (IT IS YOU IDIOTS!). Blizzard relying on third party databases that they don't even control for my account security does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling at all. In fact that's about as stupid as you can get and still convert oxygen to carbon dioxide. The ONLY data they need to reference in regards to my account security should be the data I give them when I set up my account and my authenticator. Period.

Overall I am very disappointed with Diablo 3 and Blizzard in general. They used to be a great company with great games but now they have devolved into something seemingly designed to develop trash and alienate their customers.

The rule of making sequels should be that you take what worked in the original(s) and then you improve upon it. You don't completely alter a sequel so that you can't even compare it with the original. That's what new franchises or spin-off's are for!

    My gripes:

Blizzard must have had only one thing in mind when they made this game. And that thing is MONEY!
All design choices made in Diablo 3 supports this conclusion. They have removed pretty much all things that would make you consider this a game and replaced it with grinds. This is made so that you're more akin to spend money in the real-money action house. This game shouldn't be called a game when it's more like a part time job. (Or full time for some)

There is no difficulty curve in this game at all. Instead you just mow through all content with ease on the earlier difficulties (which is unbelievable boring) until you're hit by a stone wall the size of Mars when you enter the final difficulty (Inferno). From there you have 2 choices. You grind for several MONTHS, wading through piles upon piles of useless items hoping to find upgrades OR you you simply open your wallet and buy what you need. But why anyone would spend money to get items is beyond me as that would completely remove the point of playing the game in the first place.

No character development what so ever. No skill points or stat points to allocate. Instead everything comes down to items, which happen to be bland and boring. All classes require the same kind of stats and items except for 1 primary stat. So that means that everyone is pretty much looking for the same items. Most skill are useless (especially for the witch doctor) and as un-epic as they can get so everyone not only looks the same but everyone uses the same abilities too. In other words there's no variety at all.

All this makes Diablo 3 the biggest disappointment in my entire gaming "career".

I plan to keep my distance from this iteration. Having played on a friend's computer, I can say I neither like 1.) how Blizzard feels about their customers, and 2.) how they make their games nowadays (and what their games are, in consequence).

Diablo 3 is a game where none of the original authors were involved in creating the sequel. In this case, it amounts to an analogy of R. A. Salvatore writing "Lord of the Rings 2", or the author of Twilight authoring "Crime and Punishment 2". The changes are just too contradictory to what Diablo 1 and 2 represented. Why did Blizzard North get sacked? Because they had artistic integrity? Just look at the original plans for D3, from the early 2000's, they say a lot about how the game was really meant to be. It is really disappointing that the original project got scrapped. Besides, the vast majority even on Blizzard's site have stated they definitely prefer the originally planned art, even in this day when graphics and all is supposed to be better, and many of whom state this really appreciate graphics in general.

A game is primarily defined by what emotion or feeling it gives to the player. This is done via artistic and conceptual vision. Diablo 3 does not feel ANYTHING like D2. Smoothness and high-performing requirements can be good things, but very often are just otherwise.

People game for the EXPERIENCE, not the way you swing your hammer, how neat the inventory looks or how fast a button-click responds. The experience is both intellectual and artistic. But Diablo 3's ambient qualities just plummeted to regular cartoons, and mindless DPS-viewing.
It IS cartoony as by the saturated candy-whooping animations and designs, silly (wow, a boss named "Skeleton king"... wow, how cheesy), simplistic (they've scrapped the whole stat and skill system, and in fact, all LOGIC behind choosing skills instead you'll just choose and construct a "role" or animations). It IS simply dumbed-down both artisticly and stat-wise.

Ok, whoever enjoys MMO's (and Blizzard's oh-so-inspirational WoW in particular), you can be delighted by this game. But it is nowhere near art as opposed to originals.

Not to mention that the originals were SINGLE-PLAYER GAMES, that actually ALLOWED playing the game. Whereas this iteration throws other players in your game, without you having any intention of playing with them (not to mention the damned DRM). And on top of all, this MULTIPLAYER game does not allow for competitive multiplayer nor LAN.

This Diablo 3 can go to Pandaria, as much as I am concerned.

I'm so upset about it that I'm planning on returning what I consider a 9-10 game. Only because I'm able to only get a hour, two max of playtime without being kicked off due to server issues...for a SINGLE player game that is terrible.

Always online DRM and less character customization than the previous title... 12 years ago?
unacceptable. i hope half of the people who would have purchased this game decide not to on the DRM basis alone. paying gamers should not tolerate this inconvenience merely because blizzard is scared that they will only make record breaking sales.

Very bad game, outdated graphics, for a game that has been in developpment for 10 years this is a huge shame, it's going to be ported on consoles, pvp is late, game mechanics are bad, this game screams bad all over the place. I am a huge diablo fan but the third is just a pile of dump.
Blizzard should quit Activision's deadly grasp already

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to admit when I saw this game preview for the first time, I was like this is going to be an awesome game! Being a player of Diablo Series I was very excited to get my hands on D3, but it really only turned out to being a disappointment. For as long as this game was held back, I believe 10 years or so in development, the game is quite bad. Sure the graphics/sounds/abilities are an upgrade from the old Diablo.....but that's really not saying much. The talent system is your typical cookie cutter system that will be in WoW MoP and to me is garbage because it lacks creativity and customization of your own character. ***Edit*****Lets face it we don't look into talent trees really to gain stats....it's to gain bad ass abilities! Players, and hey I may be old fashion, want to jump, break the ground, shake the earth, do massive dmg in a fun way. Not to the point where the game is face roll but where it is enjoyable to the player (It's a fine line I know) Diablo doesn't deliver on many levels to me. The story line is absolutely horrendous, (*spoiler* ) seriously, one of the most iconic people in the history of gaming...Tyrael you make human, and not only did you make him human blizz, you made him human in the "final chapter" of the game. I mean that's cool; that's like taking Predator and making him look like Bambi. I really do wish they took the time to not make your toon look like a cartoon character, I mean come on blizz this series plateaued you guys to the next level before WoW, you really could not do this game "Justice" (no pun intended) and take this game to the next level! One thing that was completely unacceptable to me was the lack of effort put into the multi-player aspect of the game. I mean normally we all expect there to be some errors don't get me wrong, but man holy cow there were a lot. Now typically you'd expect this from other companies, but come on not one that runs two of the biggest Mmorpgs in the world (WoW / SC 2). Also, the legalized selling of gold is sad, that means to me that people have gotten so lazy that they can no longer play the game and achieve gear but they have to buy it, please stop spoon feeding people everything blizzard. I am sick and tired of making classic challenging games from, well I'll say the majority of people who write reviews here, childhoods and allowing them to be played by infants. There is absolutely no skill involved in this game and the fighting system in this game is a joke. Also, when you played Diablo way back when, there was a level of creepiness to it. You know, it was dark you couldn't see what was in front of you, the world had been plagued into the abyss, and there were cows with scythe's trying to beat you down. Needless to say I am very disappointed with the installment of the series, shame on you blizz for letting an amazing legacy of game fall by the waste side. Expand

The music, one of it's predecessor's greatest strengths, seems almost absent from the game and the story really is nothing truly as gripping as I had come to expect from Blizzard Entertainment, who had previously held a fantastic track record of great storytelling. The DRM which requires you to constantly be online and constantly feeds back information causes my machine to run like an airplane that's about to take off, needlessly using computer resources and an horrible manifestation of this current obsession with anti-piracy and blocking legitimate, paying customers out of developer's games (No doubt Activision was heavily involved in this decision). All in all, this game still has alot of elements from the original series I enjoyed and certainly builds on many of them and sticks to the ones that work. It incorporates alot of traditional elements of the Diablo games which I enjoy but all of it's shortcomings and it's year of development cannot be justified so overall, a little bit of a letdown and not worth £40. Also the darker feeling of previous diablo games is not there, cartonish graphics, boss/enemy tauntings, darker ambientation is not there. This game is dumbed down for 10 years old wow gamers, it should be called DiaBloW 2. This game Is not as inmersive as D2 was, and honestly after replaying D2. I can see the diference and ambientiation, even if D2 has outated graphics is still an amazing game. I don't see myself playing this game over and over as D2. I got my monk till level 60 and rerolling other char on D3 doesn't seem fun for me. why rerolling just to see the same crappy story over and over and over? at least on D2 the story was great and you could enjoy it. Now is just an "esc" fest on every cutscene and event. At least i got my good hours of fun out of it. still hoping some patch or expansion would fix this, but this game is a failure from scratch, it should be redesigned at wiped out and rerolled again.

The game is aimed to draw in a younger generation and people who never played the Diablo series before. This comes in the form of eliminating every metagame in both D1 and D2. The reason why D1 and D2 is fun is because it's both challenging and re-playable. Figuring out the attribute system, finding rare loot - every single character you created is unique in that sense. In Diablo 3, all of this is bypassed with its flawed cookie-cutter system of the previous games. The "pay-to-win" system allows people who are spoiled to be better than people who are dedicated to the game. Every character ends up the same with the fixed attribute/skill system. This makes partying with two or more of the same character redundant and makes the end-game of level 60 to be repetitive. There is no reason to grind the game (yes, we all did that for D1 and D2) and to find rare loot when someone can buy the same items easily. There also doesn't seem to be a lot of unique rare items - scrolling through the auction house. The graphics are never problem in a game. However, the Diablo 3 theme is distracting compared to the that of D1 and D2. The games are supposed to be gothic, and about hell. What is with all these serene walk-in-the-park areas, and enemies that look laughable and ripped out of of the WoW universe? And the game is short. Without the grinding incentive, the 4 acts (if you can even consider the 4th act a proper act) are completed with my friends in less than 8 hours. Don't fall for the hype generated by D3. This game is nothing like the other games and is not recommended if you're a fan of the series. I don't even mind the numerous errors with the servers, or odd glitches here and there. I don't even care if the Monk class is a little overpowered compared to the other classes. This is just not a Diablo game. It's a normal hack-and-slash game targeted at newcomers, and I'll look at it as just that. Get the game if it's on a discount but not for the 80 dollars I had to pay for it. Expand
