Horrific implementation of a game. Cannot play for more than 5-10 minutes at a time before getting booted and having to relog. IN SINGLE PLAYER. Not worth the 60 bucks save your money until the game is working. Poor show blizzard.

No spoilers, I just wonder if it makes any sense to develop a game fo N years to get an outdated glitchy (fundamentally single player) game that only plays online after autentication on servers that do not work. All this for only 60 EUR ... increase the clusters or give the money back ...

I am Blizzard's complete and utter incompetence. I am many closed betas, an open beta, and a stress test that all amounted to nothing. I am the customer's disappointment, frustration, and wasted time. I am the reason why every single person who purchased Diablo 3 should be able to attain a refund if they so please.

So Blizzard makes us wait for 10+ years charges a hefty sum and then puts **** DRM? How can a game this size can fail on launch day. This is not a MMORPG, so I shouldn't be bothered with all this "server is too busy" errors and actually be able to play the game. Not only due to the train-wreck of a launch, but because you can not even play this game without an Internet connection. This crippling form of security serves no purpose other than agitating and frustrate legitimate customers. The pirates will always find a way around, it like they always do, even if that means emulating servers or similar shenanigans. Meanwhile we have to deal with potential latency issues and the worry of getting disconnected while playing what could very well be a single player game. The removal of the option of playing over a local area network is also very much deplorable and it is obviously due to the inclusion of the DRM and forced online play.

Another negative thing is the issue of having a cash shop in what essentially could be considered a single player game. The fact that there is a pay-to-win cash shop if you choose to play online is itself not an issue. But Blizzard's way of legalizing gold farming and RMT merely for them to earn a bit of money from every transaction does leave a very bad taste in my mouth.

The visual aesthetics are in my opinion quite unappealing and from a technical standpoint the graphics are pretty lacking as low resolution textures are hidden behind bloom and blurr. Granted, this may not be something deal breaking for most people; but for a game which has been in development for as long as Diablo 3 has, one should not be faulted for having expected something better.

Diablo 3, when you are able to access it, delivers more or less the same stuff what the earlier parts did, plenty of mouse clicking, various monsters to kill and plenty of gear to loot. Story has not much to offer, it can be summarised by "kill everything that moves and collect all the gold in the process", voice acting is mediocre, especially what comes to hero. At least the cutscenes look nice, but the in game graphics, although being watchable, offer nothing even remotely impressive. After one play through I must say I am bored. I beat the game in few days on normal difficulty, and started on Nightmare difficulty but it does not offer much more. If you can get excited just by collecting new gear and it is enough to keep you going through the same dungeons and deserts, then perhaps you can enjoy the game more than I did. But frankly put, the game is boring and repetitive. However, what makes my blood boil and what really makes me regret I ever bought this game is that I can't seem to access it. First it was the legendary error 37 right after the lauch. For a few days the game worked somewhat nice, if you exclude the timeouts for being AFK, which I find quite annoying, since I was playing single player. Now I am encountering another error (33) because of "server maintenance" and cannot access the game again. Better leave this game on the shelf until Blizzard finally fixes all the problems. How I see it, server maintenance cannot be a reason for not being able to play a single player game. Expand

I was tolerant of when Blizzard decided to install DRM into Starcraft II when it was released, mostly because it is a multiplayer game where lies the heart of the game. Diablo III is NOT required to be played in multiplayer to enjoy this game. I refuse to support a positive review on this point alone. Now on to the actual review:

I suppose the development team wanted to make it 'accessible' to woo the casual gamers, this come at the cost of the overall mood and I just don't buy into it and the quite figuratively pulls all of the emotional impact it has on the overall gamer, I don't feel sucked into the game. - The music in this game is fantastic, and hits the ball out of the park this time. I couldn't help but feel that this is the production quality even higher than what would be found in big budget movies and the 'canned' movie scores, reminiscent of the Avengers movie that was released. Well done, music producers!

    - The skill tree based system is well thought out and complex, especially once you get into the advanced ratings. It is a departure of the old 'Diablo I and II' skill management system, and a welcome change. However, for those hoping for 'more of the same', will be disappointed.

    - Gameplay is boring and repetitive, even playing with friends is boring. Was hoping for more synergy between classes when playing multiplayer, but alas there is none. Absolutely no synergy. Looks like you're on the own on this one, even when playing with friends. - Lastly, there is no excuse for having defects on the production day, and shutting down the login servers so users can play the game they paid for. DRM is a travesty, and really for a game like this, which has been under development for quite literally 4+ years, it should be shipped bug free. Now we can't even play the game because their servers are down (thanks, DRM) , even when they've had adequate time to beta test, adequate time to stress test, and adequate time to design the application. I am disappointed in the execution of this game and I don't think I will be investing much time in it in the future, will be spending much more time playing Guild Wars 2 and Torchlight 2 when they come out. This game will tide me over until than.

Taken objectively this game is barely passible, and that's extremely disappointing for something in the Diablo series. Instead of a dark, gritty, evil, game with realistic graphics that we wanted, we got a cross between WoW and Spiral Knights with the Diablo lore for flavor.

The graphics look like a 90s comic book with a blur filter. As others have said this is what WoW would look if they ever updated it for 2006. The best I can say is that they're uniformly bad instead of intermittently bad, so the game doesn't give you hope that it will get better. There is no offline or LAN play. Blizzard's misguided attempt to limit piracy by forcing users to log in is backfiring by hurting legitimate customers. Add to that the fact that the servers keep going offline and you get a taste for how it will feel in 10 years when you're nostalgic, but find that you can't play the game ~at all~ because Blizzard has removed the servers for it.

The gameplay itself is pretty standard hack and slash action RPG, but the character development has the depth of Wee Man's kiddie pool. Spells/Abilities are automatically unlocked as you level. There are runes that give them slightly different properties, but nothing that really changes how you use them in practice. Attributes and other passive skills are completely automated, so you have zero ability to mix and match with your skills to find interesting combinations.

The final shovel on the grave of this game is the real money auction house. Like the servers, it's not even ready at "launch", but it's basically planned to make pay-to-win an ever stronger reality than it already is in the illegal item markets in WoW and other games. I'll be playing Path of Exile instead. The graphics in PoE aren't perfect, but they're the style we wanted from D3. The depth of character build options in PoE are *amazing*. Best of all, PoE is free! The things you can buy are ALL completely cosmetic, and the company is very vocal about their own dislike for pay2win. Try it instead of paying for any of the BS that Blizzard is trying to feed us with D3.

A shell of its former self. Bland story, replay value has been decimated, boring character progression, far too simplified for a game coming out in 2012 by a major game developer. It's a game worth 10 dollars in the bargain bin, most certainly not 60.

A massive disappointment after putting hours upon hours into D2. A lot of the game is streamlined to the point of absurdity. Not only that, the single player experience is severely hampered by the need to be online at all times which wouldn't be that bad if could actually play the game instead of waiting for hours in the queue.

If you don't have internet access, forget it, even if you own the game.

Overall the forced online feature, is enough to destroy this game completely. Due to fear of piracy, Blizzard has kneejerked a reaction which causes true gamers, you know, the fans of D3, to reject this game. The DRM protection method is causing more harm than good. Sure, it protects your account from being hacked, at the expense of your account never getting to play a game you paid for. Servers can't stay online, forums can't even stay open, and the rising bitterness of customers are turning this into one of the worst video game launches in history.

Like DS3, D3 fails to live up to the previous two versions of the game. Diablo -> awesome game. Diablo II -> awesome game. Diablo III - > It is a major lag fest with very few monsters coming at you at a time compared to previous games. Instead of fun rendered monsters, you get bad 3D graphics. Instead of being able to take the game to a friends house and play over a LAN, or play alone on your own computer, you are required to log into their servers, which apparently are rarely even up.

When the game is there, it is much too easy... the game forces you to play through 8 hours (yes, this supposedly epic game is that short) of mind numbingly easy undead, demons, and gore before it gives you the option to play on a more challenging difficulty level. I suppose you could go Hardcore, but the servers don't seem stable enough for that. Plan for 24 hours to complete a typical 8 hour play through since there is a "mini-game" where you get kicked off of the server (for a single player game) and they repetedly hit "Log In" until it does not give you a random # that explains the current reason you can't connect to the server. If you want to play multi-player, you probably should double that time for each additional player that has to win the log-in lottery.

On the bright side, the game is so poorly executed that even without the DRM Blizzard would not have to worry about people downloading this and stealing their game. Other games are coming out later this year with real offline mode, I would say they are Diablo III killers, but really just about any free hack-and-slash flash game on the internet is that.

The 'dungeon crawler' genre is pretty well finalized, and this is just another entry in that genre. The previous Diablo games were instrumental in defining this game type, but at least they gave the option of single player with no DRM-based server control. It was a different menu button that separated single and multi. Now greed and corporate idiocy has combined them, and clearly pissed off the people that they depend on for revenue. There little arrows pointing flashing waypoints telling you exactly where to go to do the 1 quest you get at a time. It's been stripped of the exploration and adventure. I was truly expecting a new game new world a different time and era. It's diablo 2 with updated graphics. It's the same fing game in this aspect.

I haven't played enough of each character to form an opinion on all the classes yet but the initial selection leaves something to be desired. The complete lack of customization is a let down. Not that it was part of the franchise in either of it's predecessors but this generation of RPG deserved more. The skill progression is absurd you should have had to find the runes, vs having them given to you like each spell is already. Would possibly have given some replay value. I won't have to play again to try out other variants of the same class.

The one thing that I found that is simplified for the better is the crafting of weapons. I'm not the kind of person that wants to sit around and craft 1000,s of items to gain xp so the gold deposit for training did I'm my opinion take the tedium that is in so many games out of the equation.

Overall I think blizzard has let down the generation of gamers that made the first two games such a success and has done a disservice to this generation of gamers new to the series. This franchise desered so much more than what has been created.

And I'm not even considering the always on DRM, error 37, stupid server issues like having 1500ms latency when pinging any west coast site gives me normal pings.

I'm gonna go call my bank and request a charge-back now and assume this site based review will either be made by an impressible 8 year old or a biased guy.

If you want it for the singleplayer story portion only, wait till it hits the bargain bin in a couple months. Its short and linear, not worth the asking price by any stretch of the imagination.

This is not the Blizzard from the 'good old days'. This is the 'we want to be like EA blizzard'.

I'm giving this game a 1. The ONLY reason it gets a 1 is because I paid $60 and Blizzard actually gave me the disc. I'M SURPRISE THOSE JAGONS EVEN DID THAT!@!!@!!!! it's like - what in the world are they thinking? You don't wait this long, beta test and even have PRE-ORDER NUMBERS and go into your launch unprepared. It amazes me what money can do these days.

    Thanks for robbing me blind

Diablo 3 is a wow clone. I got a bad feeling when they have named the dark wanderer to "aldrict", when the dark wanderer really was yourself the adventurer who smacke dthe soulstone in your own face at diablo 1 end cinematics.
And yet still claims that the doings in Diablo 2 was "brave adventurers" whilst just backstabbing all the Diablo 1 gamers by calling them all "Aldricgt" som of king

Man the game itself sucks big time and is a hughe wow clone in sheep clothing, but to whack up the diablo storyline to more resemble WOW lore, that is low.
And whats with the cinematic looking like papermachie from a flash game, stills floating around and a voice in the background.
no i am very dissapointed, i give a 1 just not to dissapoint someone that spended money on a usless product, like all those who baught WOW in the beginning, paying 60euros and some months later just realizing that they spent 60 euros on something they never can play anymore.
Why will D3 be the same? Because when people start hitting infernal, everyone is forced to buy gold because the inflation will look like always in mmos, the best item will cost u a staggering 10 million gold.

I bought this game because I just built a new computer and seen all the hype. I figured there would be issues and waited for about 24 hours before purchasing. I was unable to play due to errors at login and what I did see was lagged. I will try again tonight. Haven't been able to play the game I bought yet.

I have to agree that this game has been a humongous dissapointment. For all the years we waited, this is what we get. Server issues aside (which were horrible), the game just isn't fun. The graphics are horribly dated, yet you need a decent system to run the game. Seems rushed. Needing to be online all the time to just play, even solo is not a good idea. Needing to be online all the time to just play, even solo is not a good idea. If they could re-do Diablo 2 in hi-res you'd see just how great that game looked. This just doesn't even feel like a Diablo game. Feels very sanitized. The color is terrible. Feel like this game has regressed from where it was in D2. Diablo I, was way better than this. I'm not going to say its too short, because I explore every bit of the map, but not being able to even play much, I can only base it on what I've seen. Its a feeling of been there, and done that. If it had a Single Player offiline mode I'd rate it a 4. Its just not that good. Its obvious that the real talent left and they started from scratch and rushed it. Shame on Blizzard for not paying more for servers/infrastructure in the Americas. Just wholeheartedly dissapointed in it. Expand

Remember how much fun the first Diablo was? Yeah, this isn't it. It feels like this weird combination of Lego Star Wars and the World of Warcraft character tree. It's boring and repetitive and I'm unhappy that I wasted money on it. I'd be mad about having to be online to play, but I just don't feel like playing it again. Maybe you just can't go back.

I find that somehow game developers recently have lost sight of how to continue a successful franchise and it seems to be happening during the third iteration. Diablo 3 along with Fable 3 and Dungeon Siege 3 have taken what were excellent examples of adventure/action/rpg games and turned them into something else. I was honestly going to skip this game but my wife picked it up for me as a gift. After staring at the box for about half an hour I finally decided to install it. Upon installing the game I was greeted with a slew of errors while attempting to log in and finally gave up late in the evening on launch day. I went to bed feeling as though I should have went with my gut reaction and returned the game. I was especially annoyed at the utter lack of offline play modes. Regardless of Blizzard's reasoning behind this decision, it was a poor decision at best. This might seem like a viable idea, but I live in an area where broadband internet may or may not be available depending on where you live. Anyone who lives in a rural area, especially in mountainous areas will literally be unable to play. If I were to visit my relatives, I wouldn't be able to play due to the fact that they can really only get dial-up connections and even cell services are spotty.

The day after the theoretical launch day, I was finally able to play after work. I immediately felt underwhelmed by the graphics and feel of game play. The character movement and battle feels stiff and unexciting and the UI feels sub-optimal. I immediately noticed the lack of zoom capability with mouse wheel (admittedly nit-picky but this is really design heuristics 101), although there is a zoom button ('z') which zooms you all the way in or out. I haven't played it long enough to be certain, but it seems like a lot of the character customization appears to have been changed and or removed leaving the level profession feeling lackluster.

The lesson learned here is when dealing with sequels (or Blizzard) wait until the reviews come in or find a used copy in the bargain bin. Gameplay: mediocre
    Graphics: mediocre
    Online Requirement: dismal

thanks blizzard, I cancel to buy this game until your stupid DRM is erased, look at CDP, they dare to remove the DRM, and their game sales still good.

and the server has no SEA region, and I have to connect to the server via US server, man it's shame, I get around 300 - 1000 ping from my region to reach US server, hahahaha

The login screen looks nice, too bad I can play the game I paid for in single player mode because blizzard turned greedy an decided for me that I should have access to the action house where they take a 15% of the work of their clients. corporate jerks!

This game doesn't feel like a Diablo game. You are assigned ability scores and a skill every level. No decisions to really make. Weapons don't seem to be as diverse or important. Worst of all no offline play so I can't play the game online because their servers are down. This is not the Diablo that made me a fan. Huge fail.

And your logouts are also timed for single player. -World PvP removed and the only PvP options are some sort of WoW-Clone arena. And that will not even release on Day 1. -If you care about Voice Acting, it's terrible compared to D2. -Check points that revive you from exactly where you left off. -Region lock. DRM that requires you to always be online. -If expansions bother you, you can expect D3 to take the WoW road. -Graphics look like re-done WoW graphics and with them maxed out, this game could of been relased along side WoW back in 04. This is 2012 man... -More than half the screen glows red when you are low on health. -Fixed class specific gear that looks EXACTLY like the ones in WoW but not only is that a problem, that means when they finally release the PvP you are going to be fighting people looking exactly like you. No uniqueness what so ever. BUT I HAVE ONLY SCRATCHED THE SURFACE SADLY.." It doesn't even feel like either of the Diablo games. It's too bright, colorful, cartoony, the bosses look like they are straight from Wow. /dissapoint.

Expected more from the servers of the world leader in mmorpg. It`s so riddiculous to rely in internet connection to play single player. Are you scared of counterfeiting blizzard? Don't transfer your problem to my shoulders!

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]
