    -Repetitve gameplay.
    -Boring generic storyline/characters.
-Childish graphics (for a M-rated game! Why? So WoW-Players feel right at home?)

I can't say how much this game turned out to be a disappointment to me.
I have played TD's with deeper gameplay and better storylines than this.

Diablo 3 is so boring you would have more fun at a bingo hall. Also the connection problems at launch are awful and show how incompetent Blizzard is. The graphics in game are also not close to what a Diablo game should look like.

You can see Blizzard's merging of their IPs in this game. It takes graphical, interface, and gameplay elements from WoW and SCII. I don't like this and how it ends up effecting things that we've come to like in the Diablo series such as the depth of character customization like a classic RPG. You can't distribute your skill points, yes it makes things more simple, but it points back to WoW and SC, the merging of these elements probably saves money (or at least allocates it for other things that may or not be improvements) but it takes away from the soul/character of the original. D3 was probably built on the SC 2 game engine..I don't want it to feel like SC! The story was a travesty, two major characters were killed off and in a cheesy cut scenes. The acts had similar environments as D2, (desert, jungle, forest, hell-ish) which was fine I suppose. No open world PvP? A WoW auction house? Sorry, I have such mixed emotions about it right now that I can't put it into words, I almost feel like I shouldn't have even played it because I can't erase the bad parts! could only wish for my memory to be erased and Blizzard to do proper justice to the game. I don't even want to play through again because it's so depressing. You go back 6 years and SC, WoW and D2 felt like DIFFERENT GAMES, now it's just a mix of all, over simplified and ...ugh so frustrating!

I did like the graphics and sound but I found that sometimes the journals, voices and character interaction sound levels varied a lot so I found myself adjusting the sound here and there.

While the core game play itself seems bug free, everything else from the client, to logging in, to the auction house, to even doing in-game trading is finicky and simply just plain bad - untested, unfinished product. At the heart of the game is the Diablo hack and slash combat we all know and love, and the skills and classes feel good. From this aspect the game excels very well. However, and unfortunately for Blizzard, the fact the servers were horrible on the first week, and still lag constantly, the auction house which continually gives you error codes whenever you try to buy an item or sell an item, the incredibly short, predictable, and tired storyline that any elementary school student could have come up with, the incredible shortness of Act 4, and the quite clearly 4 year old graphics engine combine to give a rating - 5/10. The game hits all the points we wanted from D2, and that's not saying much considering that game is 12 years old. Feels like a Diablo 2 expansion pack more than a new full game. Expand

Just to clarify, I'm only talking about the game itself here. I personally don't care about the login issues; they're bound to happen at the launch of such a huge game as this (more than 6 million copies purchased so far), and the Blizzard staff did do their very best to solve any problem as fast as possible.

Now on to the review: simply put, Diablo 3 is amazing. It takes the best of the 2 previous games and further improves and adds to it.
The graphics are detailed, pretty and realistic.
The gameplay is fast, fun, simple at its core yet open to complexity, strategy and a very high level of personalization.
Each and every class is fun to play. They all have very distinctive "flavors" and personalities and you will want to play though at least Normal mode with each class, just to see their respective characteristics at play.
The story is good, with a few unexpected twists and a satisfactory ending that still leaves room for future expansions and games on the Diablo franchise.
The voice acting is beautiful and the characterization is quite deep and credible, which is amazing considering just how short the storyline actually is, at least if compared with a "traditional" RPG like Final Fantasy and its ilk. Even the followers characters feel like real people.
If you liked Diablo and Diablo 2, I believe you will absolutely love Diablo 3.

I can't understand how can they make such huge changes to the game, at least they should have put a survey for the beta. You can't distribute attribute points and skills. Really? This made Diablo 2 unique and enjoyable for a long time. For example, there is no sense having now 2 barbarians. With this "strategy" people will play far less this game. What was the logic, thinking that young "modern age" kids playing mmorpgs will join this game? You also know that everyone has all the skills that you have (if they are your level), and it's just a matter choice, depending on what has been put in the short-key bar. There are "runes" for the skills, which are a kind of upgrade, they are also unlocked by leveling-up. The game has been made so easy. Even no identification scrolls/town portals. You deleted so many things, which were the uniqueness of this great series! The voices are not even barely similar to Diablo 2, and are so so bad. All in all, if you are not a fan of Diablo 2, and if you enjoy games from this type - Sacred, Titan Quest, you may like Diablo 3. But if you are a fan of the old ones, I strongly suggest to look at the "innovations" first, whether you will like them. Expand

The game just had a dark, eerie feeling. The music was enjoyable, and I remember how excited I was when I found out it was free to download. Finding the best armor was a skill, and I remember my MF Sorceress fondly. My uncle and I had mule accounts to keep all of our good drops. Fast forward to Diablo 3, the long awaited and highly anticipated game for all of us Diablo 2 fans. Is the game good? Yeah, I guess. Is it worth the $60? Not really. And it definitely is a disappointment. Watching beta videos on YouTube, I was very disappointed with the cartoon-like graphics. It's not as bad as I was expecting, but it still doesn't give me the creepy feeling Diablo 2 did. The storyline is also absurdly short and rushed, I beat Normal within a few days and that's not even playing all day or night. I thought the cinematics were cool, but in general, the acts felt very reminiscent of Diablo 2 except with a worse storyline. The inclusion of the Auction House gives me mixed feelings... and it all seems like Blizzard set the game up to just make them money. We don't get our Hoadric Cube back, we have to craft our armor, craft our gems, level up our stash... and it all requires gold. Even in the gold auction house, Blizzard takes a cut of the gold. Runes as we know them from D2 are gone, replaced with skills we can't really customize. I feel like I can't stand out at all from any other Wizard (I play a Wizard)... not to mention that the Wizard is pitifully weak compared to other classes. I tried to find my own loot like in Diablo 2, and had 50% MF total.. and found no decent drops. I ended up just buying items from the AH, which is probably how everyone will do it. Even the music is uninspired... they just remixed one song from the previous game and it gets very repetitive. It's not creative and doesn't really add to the atmosphere like it did in D2. I guess I just find Diablo 3 to be very oversimplified, short, and bland compared to Diablo 2. It's a fun game worth playing, but if you really enjoyed Diablo 1 and 2, you may be disappointed. Expand

Absolutely love the game. The simplicity of this game, along with the social aspect, will make it a winner in the long term. The beauty of blizzard's games is revealed in end-game interaction, where a whole new experience manifests. PvP, gear-grinding, and the auction house as a model of an economy will drive the long-term user interaction. I believe this is a winner.

Ambience and overall music is great.

Is not taxing on low end systems.

    The Bad:

Voice work is AWFUL. Not just the voice acting, but the script itself is very weak. The plot only holds value to those who have played the earlier games.

Difficulty modes have been scaled interestingly and pigeon hole the player into stacking Vitality (HP) doesn't matter what your class is. On the Nightmare mode (difficulty up from Normal) I was one-hit by the first boss, with absolutely amazing gear on. Nothing broken, but playing Demon Hunter with a damage build and if I can't avoid the attacks I die. No more flame builds where the player can torch everything down. Little reward for people who actually know the game and RPG's in general. After I realized the above fact, I turned the game off and returned to Skyrim. No replayability for me and I am a hardcore RPG fan.

After several days on Inferno I have to dock this game to a 5. It's challenging but oh so boring. 10-20 minutes of kiting to slowly grind down a pack of elites gets really old really fast. Melee has it the worst as they lack ranged damage. It's brutally slow and a complete departure from the fun hack and slash style that made this series so great.

My biggest problem with the game (PC):

+ Subpar graphics for this age on PC. If you max out the graphic settings you won't push any modern card, even the cheapest ones. They should be ashamed over this, considering how big Blizzard is. I can blame the consoles for making the gfx so low but it's not an excuse, the gfx should have been made for the PC and then scaled down for consoles.

+ Internet requirement. No **** arguments for it, it is just plain bad. We don't own the game we're holding in our hand, we have a license to play it. Even says so in the "agreement" during installation.

+ The built-in marketplace. Did they really have to recommend people to cheat? What happened to the satisfaction of finding good stuff yourself? Now you are supposed to just grind for money so you can buy stuff that other players have found OR just aquired easily on the Inferno difficulty. It completely takes away the compare-yourself-with-a-friend aspect of the game as well, since there's no way of knowing how much he has just bought in the market. Using game-money in the marketplace is just a step-stone towards using real-world money that the greedy Blizzard wants you to use. By buying/selling items with game-money your are putting real-life-worth on virtual items, worth that will eventually bubble into someone spending real money. Shame on you Blizzard, SHAME ON YOU.

In a way the marketplace issue is even larger than the Internet-connection issue. At least the actual gameplay is not ruined when you are required to connect to their servers.

First of all this game is not a RPG game, at least not in the classical definition of it so stop calling it like that; You can call it hack-n-slash or eventually action-RPG. I play it since the release and this game is by far the most addictive and beautifully crafted of its kind. The atmosphere and gameplay are close to perfection.
Come on this is a Blizzard game ! Did you spend the last ten years in a hole ? You guys expect a BF3 quality game when Blizzard has shown to always chose cartoon-like graphics which do not require war-machines to run, in order to make their games accessible to the largest audience possible. And that's a good choice. The game runs like in a dream, not like most of the games being released recently which all need large patches 24 to 48 hours post-release because they are sold weeks too early.
I see a lot of reviews describing bugs, but after 20+ hours of gameplay I still have to see one in game. Of course there has been this very much expected "37 error" for maybe 24 hours after the release but did you honestly expect anything else ? Blizzard runs what is by far the most popular on-line game in history (WoW). Don't you think they know how to deal with high load on servers, can't you just stop acting like spoiled kids and wait just couple of hours for the excitation to go down ? These reactions are just a shame...
And for the so-called "simplification" of gameplay and skills, this was to be expected as well. If you play WoW the tendency exists since couple of years ( at lest the two last WoW expansions). Blizzard started with skill trees pretty much inspired from D2 and after some time (the two first expansions let's say) it was clear that this gives only the illusion of freedom. Anybody trying to play at least half correctly knows that each class or specialty has one or two optimum builds that gets posted all over the Internet and that 90+% of players end up choosing. Don't you think Blizzard collects stats about that ? So the fact that they reduce the skill trees to smaller ones but proposing more meaningful choices is here again a good choice. I am pretty sure that all in all D3 will exhibit more diversity in class builds than WOW or D2.
And finally for the "Internet connection required" issue, I am pretty sure that it is linked to the fact that the real-currency auction house has to be kept protected at all cost and I am pleased the Blizzard's people are aware of it. The mob of short-sighted people posting here are criticizing the real-currency auction house, but can you blame Blizzard for wanting some control over an economy that WILL emerge from the game no matter what happens ? Think of the gold-selling chinese farmers you meet on almost every WoW server and you'll know what I mean.
So you guys want a elitist hackable 2012 version of D2 with enhanced graphics...
Thank god this is not what Blizzard gave us, bur instead one of the most enjoyable gaming experience in the last couple of years.

The Harry_Pontek pay for the game and he expect to be able to play it at his own convenient time. BUT blizzy for whatever reason known only to their money minded brain, decides to take this "given" right away. So authoritative is blizzy, they deems it fit to dictate when you can and cannot play EVEN WHEN you pay premium for it.

Alright... Some of you might say "You already know this features before it launch. So, why blame after buy". Let The Harry_Pontek explain and the explanation is simple. Its because of the long 12yrs wait and also the love for Diablo series. So, try it out AND GUESS WHAT!!!!!!! ERROR37 and frequent maintenance on the crapper than crab server. Gosh!!!! Is this suppose to be normal? NOPE!!!!!!

Ok.... Let The Harry_Pontek be more liberal about this. Surely this game have something that impress The Harry_Pontek right? What about the gameplay and loot. Talk about this aspect, The Harry_Pontek's blood boil even hotter. The Harry_Pontek now cant customize his character to make uniquely Pontek. Everybody looks the same. Whats the point of playing when you cant relate to the character you choose and build. After a weeks on/off play, The Harry_Pontek cant even get a decent loot. All weapon and armour looks the same. Is it because of the moronic Auction House where you now can buy rather than fight for the loots. This seriously take away the fun. The only saving grace for this game and the only reason why The Harry_Pontek is awarding a 1 for this game is the soundtrack. Nuff said.

Take a deep breath and everything will turn out just fine.

It doesn't really challenge anything about the tried and true RPG genre, and in fact it has a certain grindtacular feel about it which blizzard are famous for. This is far more a slap in the face from blizzard than a game worth playing and worth reccomending. They've said "Look, we know this makes money so here you go" and released a game which is definately subpar for a company of their size. It is still an RPG, but a pale shadow of what it could have been. We don't want more world of warcraft. We want a legendary RPG. Expand

I think that Blizzard tried to do too many things with this game. The fact that it had to be reworked probably led to the dated graphics.

Good Points the game is fun, you feel exhilarated when your character can use abilities to cut a swathe through the enemy. Locking the stats can seriously reduce the rampant cheating that occurred in Diablo2, as well as the persistent online world, even though a little annoying especially if you don't have good internet. The use of percentages throughout ensures that all skills remain useable and relevant fixing a Diablo 2 problem where one had to totally retool your skills when you went from normal to nightmare or nightmare to hell.

Bad Points the graphics are a bit dated, the locking of attributes, skills is a double edged sword. I could argue for the locking of the stats as that can reduce the cheating that was rampant in Diablo2. They could have linked skill damage to stats as opposed to weapon damage which just opens another loophole. This loophole mind you may have been devised to make them money through the auction houses, however potentially can ruin the game from abuse. The locking of item stat association has unfortunately led to the ludicrous fact that a mage could theoretically wield a sword with the same aplomb as a barbarian. Other issues In Titan Quest you had to press a key to loot which meant no interference when fighting, however in Diablo3 a game many years its senior you are accidentally picking up objects instead of attacking enemies. There should be a way to transfer objects from one of your characters to another one, up to me writing this not sure if there is outside of the auction house.

The lack of skill customization unfortunately removes almost all re-playability in the game, because while the runes give you good variability, all you have to do is to equip the others to see how they work.

This kills one of the better aspects of Diablo2 where you could have 3 or more different types of Amazon or Paladin etc. They have simplified the game too much, in an effort to distill a fun game they have lost the essence of what makes a good RPG and followed in the footsteps of their competition EA. This has resulted in a game that a lot of persons will pay for and play however has lost its RPGness.
I would implore these publishers to go back to the drawing board or forever lose one of the most enduring, most followed genre in computer games. While generally less is more in this case less just made you feel cheated..... out of an RPG......again.

Pay-to-win auction house. Art style diverges greatly from the other products in the series, and adopts the now tired toony style a'la World of Warcraft. Time to complete is rather short for a game with limited replay value. Music score is bland.

    ----Good----
Hardcore mode is fantastic: rewarding greatly and punishing firmly, making victories an incredible rush and making you really care about your character. Online party system is better than ever, and for now the griefers are few. Sound and music cues make the experience cinematic at times. Interface and menus are slick and polished. Player characters all have a unqiue feel and style.

    ----Final Comments----
The engine really feels like the World of Warcraft engine adapted and enhanced for this title, which is weak since the technology is showing its age. For all the shallow justifications Activizzard have given for the forced-online constraint, the title has or will soon be cracked and pirated, the auction house economy is junk, and only those who have paid for the game or want to play online must suffer the DRM. I can't help but think some big budget top-down action RPG title will fill the void left by this disappointing release. Perhaps that will be Blizzard with a Diablo3 expansion pack, restoring the deep metagame mechanics and charm of the series.

This sets the scene for several different scenarios where you might not actually be able to even play the game, even if just to tinker around with character generation or play through the whole game once-through in some remote place.

The skills and statistics on the items have been homogenized and dumbed down, big time, ostensibly to make the game more appealing to the masses. And the skills aren't very exiting either. You get all exited to get a new ability, only to find out it doesn't work well at all with the other abilities you have, or is barely different from the ability you were already using, and thus superfluous. To be fair Diablo 2 had a few skills like this as well, but at least you had a feeling of control as you stepped past them to fill the other more useful abilities with more points, or experimented with different 'builds'. You'll find not much for builds in this game --- the metagame surrounding Diablo 3 is pretty much non-existent.

The dungeons are also far too long, and you can go for a good 20-30 seconds down a hallway without encountering a single monster. Or sometimes you encounter like... 4 monsters, kill them in 1 second if you're a melee class, or 10 seconds if you're a sorcerer or demon hunter, and move on. No, you don't want to be a ranged class right now in this game...

On the plus side, yeah, it can be fun to blow up lots of baddies. It's just too bad there's not much statistical depth or story behind you doing it. It could have been alot better.

I'm completely puzzled by all the negative reviews for this game. While it isn't a perfect game, it is an extremely enjoyable representative of the genre.

    Graphics:

The graphics have a cell-shaded look similar to Torchlight. If you don't like that style of graphics, then you will not like this game. If you do like that look, then the graphics are fantastic. While you cannot zoom in - probably to balance performance - the animations, effects for the various attacks are incredibly well done. If you have a weapon with a poison effect - pools of green fog will appear around dead mobs. The monk has various animations associated with his attacks that clearly convey the power of his fist and foot based attacks.

There is a lot of skill, craftsmanship and love put into the graphics in this game. So I would rate graphics as 9.5 out of 10.

    Gameplay:

Nothing new or different here - this is a hack-n-slash game. Click, click, click, click, right-click, etc. That said, the controls are responsie and well thought out. As you level up, you will unlock various skills and you can change the active skills any time you aren't in combat.

The games consists of exploring areas, killing mobs, and picking up loot. And you are always hoping for better weapons or armor.

While there is nothing "new" under the covers - what is here is rock solid, if repetitive - and earns a 9.0 out of 10.

    Customization:

I've seen a lot of comments about the lack of customization. I'm not sure that I understand why being able to customize the "look" of the character is so important to some people. If this was a Skyrim type game, yes that would matter. But, given the fixed perspective of the game - I agree with the developer's decision to limit you to selecting the gender, class and name of your character. Anything more would have been pointless window dressing.

As your level progresses - you do have limited control of your skills - which fall into broad categories such as: Active, Defensive, Passive, etc. While there is a set path , limited options as you level - you will need to switch out skills at various points.

I would rate this area an 8.0 out of 10.

    Stability and Performance:

I've played the game about 25-30 hours so far, playing across 4 different classes: Wizard, Demon Hunter, Barbarian and Monk. The game has hard-locked my system once. Otherwise, it has been perfect and rock-solid. I'm also playing on an older Dell XPS 8100 - and have everything set to high-detail. The games loads quickly, transitions as you change areas are fast, so no complaints here.

    I would give a 9.0 out of 10 rating.

    Loot & Leveling

Loot and leveling are the areas where I have some qualms about the game. With regard to loot - so far the game seems pretty stingy. You find a lot of magical items, but none of it has had a WOW, TFA factor. And, the rare / epic items are extremely infrequent and also kind of ho-hum.

You spend a lot of time picking up trash items, and selling them. And, for some reason, I seem to be getting a lot of items that are restricted to a different class than the one I'm playing. I.e. my Demon Hunter keeps getting a lot of Barbarian only gear.

In short, there seems to be something slightly "off" and underwhelming in the area of loot.

On the positive side, you unlock an Blacksmith NPC - and if you spend gold training him you eventually get access to some nice items.

Leveling - because of the fixed path for the various skill areas - also is a little less satisfying than I might like.

While these are gripes - when balanced against the overall game they are relatively minor. No game is perfect, and these are the two areas where Diablo 3 shines the least.

I will give both loot and leveling (unlocking new skills) a 7.5 out of 10.

    Overall Score:

This game is a definite 9.0 out of 10. There are a lot of lessons that other developers could learn from Blizzard and this game. The overall polish and design are extremely high-quality. I've had no problems connecting to servers, with performance, etc.

I would like better loot, and more of a sense of freedom when it comes to unlocking and selecting skills when leveling - but these are really minor quibbles with an otherwise excellent game. A lot of people have complained about not having scrolls - but given the limited inventory slots I applaud the design decision to eliminate the scrolls and just provide a town portal and identify unknown items skill. This is a fun, addictive games with an extremely high-level of polish and artistry. If you like the genre, and don't mind the graphics style - this game is highly recommended. I paid full price, and feel that I'm getting my money's worth. Will that change when Torchlight 2 comes out - at $20 - maybe. But, until then, this is a fantastic hack-n-slash. Highly recommended.

Blizzard knows how to make a game, no doubt, and while it's not a perfect game, (when has anyone ever played a "perfect" game anyways?) It does provide fun, and a decent story. The casting of spells and skills through an action bar is reminiscent of WoW, and the chat system is pulled almost directly from WoW. Not that either of those things are bad, they show that Diablo, as a series, is evolving.

I have now played Diablo for 7 days and already there is zero point to continue I have beaten inferno on my wizard with a build that i made in 5 minutes that made me more or less invinsible trading items is pointless as ah has top dps weapons for gold and when every skill is based on weapon dmg what else matters , im not even fully geared and i have beaten inferno so now there is no further point to trade items. Full Review: http://www.aguilasnest.blogspot.com.ar/2012/05/diablo-3-full-video-review-q-por-ada.html

The minions of hell Grown Stronger.

    PUNTAJE FINAL: 8.0

    1. The game feels very similar to Diablo 2. If you are one of the millions of people who LOVED Diablo 2, you will LOVE Diablo 3.

    2. The skill system has been vastly improved. Gone are the days where you either play one of four cookie-cutter Hell-beating builds or die instantly. Instead, players can switch skills on the fly and thereby try different combinations of skills for different encounters. This adds a strategic element to the game, but it also just makes the game more fun to experience since you won't be spamming one skill for thousands of hours.

    3. The game looks amazing. It may not look as polished as Skyrim or Witcher 2 on first glance, but Blizzard knows that the devil is in the details. The movements of the characters are smooth and seamless. Skills are impressive to behold. The environments are interactive and the 3D rendering adds considerable depth. The result is a game that may not boast the best screenshots but offers some of the most visceral and epic battle sequences ever created.

    4. The new crafting system ensures that grinding will yield adequate rewards (at least so far). One of the biggest downsides of Diablo 2 was the dependence on getting lucky drops. The new crafting system allows you to salvage pretty much anything and turn the materials into high quality weapons and armor that actually compete with the random drops.

    5. It is easy to join forces against the Prime Evils! It takes all of one click to join a friend's game and take up arms against the forces of Hell. Sure, it is nice to be able to fly solo, but this game is much more fun with a group of friends, and Blizzard has made it easier than ever to make that happen.

    6. This game is worth buying just for the experience of playing Act 3 and Act 4. I will refrain from spoiling it for those who have not had the pleasure, but Blizzard really finishes the game with a bang!

    7. The cutscenes are AWESOME... so is the sound!

    8. By offering hardcore mode and the Inferno difficulty, the game should please serious gamers and grinders.

    9. On the flip side, the game has much to offer to the casual gamer. I feel that casual gamers get drowned out in the forums, but I would wager that the vast majority of the players currently enjoying themselves in the world of Santuary have yet to beat the game on Normal. They are pacing themselves and enjoying every minute of it! The beauty of Diablo 3 is that you can have a blast playing for 10 hours OR 10 minutes... in both cases you are killing demons and finding items. As a person with a demanding job and a life outside of computer games, I appreciate a game that I can play intermittently over a very long period of time.

    10. On a similar note, this game has unparalleled value. People still enjoy playing Diablo 2 even though it was released 12 years ago! This installment will not be any different - it will always be there for you when you need a quick item hunting, demon slaying fix (don't we all?). I can think of no other game that offers such replayability without a monthly charge.

There are more reasons that this game is worthy of a high rating and deserving of your hard earned dollars. I'd list more, but I'd rather play a bit more Diablo 3. See you in Sanctuary!

The game itself had an interesting storyline, amazing new skills and classes and new features which enhanced the game. Some of the things I was a little disappointed about at first because they were different from the first 2 games but once I got over that I actually liked the changes they made and might be annoyed when I don't have these new features in the older games. Its fair to say I was expecting a LOT from D3, with its many (MANY) years of development and with blizzards reputation for 'polish' and I know i'm not as down right gutted as many reviewers, but I am still pretty disappointed... The core gameplay I'm enjoying, the lust for loot etc is great, although after 2 and a half full play throughs all the loot has been either 'magic' or 'rare' whereas in D2 i'd have seen loads of uniques and sets by now. . . minor niggle, and as I said i'm enjoying the game and the skill system, where very (far too) BASIC its fun and it seems to be working. I like the auction house idea, and the achievments etc... Graphics and sound are pretty enough, yup, tho catering to high end rigs would have been nice and the WoW style doesn't really fit in the D3 world AT ALL... For me tho, the story really ruins the game. I remember the haunting, grim and dark D2 story, Maurius losing his mind, the dark wanderer, the machinations of the prime evils etc... A SOLID story, gripping, and lovely and juicy and DARK. D3 story is really.... weak. I hate sounding like another betrayed fanboy but there are no excuses, the story is weak, characters don't feel anything more than paperthin, seems really bitty and thrown together... Real shame because if the game had been made maybe an Act longer, and the story was as gripping and interesting as D1 & D2 they'd have had a real jewel in the Diablo crown. Don't get me wrong, i'm hooked, and I can see this game giving me HOURS of awesome playtime, but it is still, by and large, a huge disappointment. And I've not even MENTIONED the massive issues with release-date play and the LUNACY of sunday-after-release-midday-maintenance. Scrapes a 5 for me. Think thats fair. Expand

I'm literally stuck at the final boss dieing over and over again because all of a sudden my connection will drop out and 30+ seconds later, the servers catch back up, bringing my death with it. is it my computer? no, im not new to PC gaming, i can play almost every modern game out there, max settings, DX11, tessellation on high, physx, etc. is it my internet connection? no, again, im not new to PC gaming. i can spend entire afternoons in games like TF2 or L4D with no troubles at all. aside from the horrible first week this game has been having with the servers, a new problem is now occurring. a massive amount of people are having their accounts hacked and their items and gear stolen. all of this because in a few weeks Blizzard wants to open up a Real-Money Auction House. This game-item theft concept isnt new, for anyone who's ever played an MMORPG before. Long story short, save your money. this game is barely playable. when it is, it is a fun game, not as good as Diablo2, but still good. however im still giving it a low score because Blizzard demands that their horrible servers be a part of your experience. Gold and non unique items mean something: In diablo 2 any of the items that weren't unique or a part of a set were pretty much junk and gold was pretty much worthless.

The auctionhouse: This is a great element that, although it is pretty norm with MMOs, this is a great addition to the game.

True to the old game: I remember doing baal run after baal run to get to 99. This still has that same feeling, but you don't have to do runs anymore to get to the max level. The Cons:

No offline mode: This is annoying, but forgivable with how widely available broadband is these days.

Feels like its unfinished: with the missing of PVP and the money auction house, it feels like they released it without really being finished. To me this isn't that big of a deal, but I have high expectations of Blizzard and saying we'll release it once it's finished.

4 player max: I miss being able to have up to 8 players in a game. This is a little dissapointing, but not as much as I thought it would.

Overall a very good game, but there are some key issues that doesn't quite make it a 10/10

The unexplained downtime, the hacked accounts, and the onslaught of error codes this game gives completely negates any positive experience I have in game. The crafting system appears to be a waste of time, driving users to the auction house - which soon will have a real money component to it. Community service through these issues has been downright terrible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so after having played this for about a week, i think i've played enough to give a verdict on the game.

First of all, it's not bad, not at all, so don't listen to the people who say it's crap. Second of all, it is, in my opinion, not as good as the previous game sin the series. Why? For me it all comes down to 2 things. Story and atmosphere. The atmosphere of this game is, in my opinion, very different from the first 2 games. Yes, i know Blizzard said that if they had done it darker the monsters would have blended in too well, but if i look at Diablo 2 i had a creepy feeling that something scary or bad would happen sometimes, and in Diablo 1 i didn't even dare go more than 3 floors down due to me being a scaredycat. With this game, i didn't even think twice and basically ran headlong into battle without even thinking about th horrors that were there.

For the story, i don't really know, i guess it just comes down to me not connecting with it as much as the previous games. I think something that influenced it migh be the way they build it up. In Diablo 2, you had the cinematics that basically shows what had happened before or after The Dark Wanderer had visited a place, whereas in this game you have cinematics that follow the characters that you travel with throughout the gmae. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, but in my mind, it doesn't really give an incentive as to why we should be getting rid of Belial and Azmodan, the exception being the one movie showing Azmodan. Yes of course they're the last lords of hell, but would someone mind telling me what Belial is doing in Caldeum? Because i honestly don't remember being told about it in the game. And one other thing that for me is quite essential. How do Belial and especilly Azmodan know about the black soulstone? I mena, with Belial it at least makes a bit snese because he's been hanging out in Caldeum and captured Adria, but Azmodan has been hanging out in Hell and to me, it just seems like there's no reason why he should know about the black soulstone.

Oh and this is just a very personal opinion, but i feel that Tyrael not being an angel anymore takes a lot away from his character. Is that just me?

However, the thing i can praise about this game, is that it's still as fun to kick butt as it was in the previous games. It exciting to kill mobs and pray that you get that weapon that you've looked for forever. I actually also think that the changes made to the skill system aren't all bad. I can see that it makes a lot of different builds available, but it may also take some of the fun away of building your own spec and seeing how it works. But the new system is both good and bad, seeing as almost all skills should be a viable choice, but as i said before, it also takes some of the fun out of seeing how your spec works, and it wouldn't really have been that hard to add respecs to the game as they did for Diablo 2 in a newer patch.

So this is basically my opinion about some of the main points of the game. Hope some of you agree :P

    Ways it is unimproved:

So in short, if you don't mind paying $60 for another expansion of Diablo 2, you won't be disappointed. But given that its 10 years in the making, Blizzard should have been able to do better than that.

The story is on the weak side, the dialogue even weaker at times, but the inclusion of lore from previous games and active narration that doesn't make you quit playing is a nice touch. I do wish that the lore entries on enemies were narrated by your chosen character class rather than two characters who never spoke to you about them before (Cain and Abn al-Hazir), but it isn't game breaking. As for gameplay, I want to express that I after almost 17 hours of play I have not been bored one second. I have only just reached Act III, and being one who has to explore every nook and cranny of the map I feel qualified to say that even on the too-easy starting difficulty I've had a lot of fun and great moments. There is nothing like being surrounded by enemies, pulling them in with Ground Stomp, and slaying 41 enemies in one blow with Revenge. I like the graphics and, unlike some, feel that photorealism does not serve the gameplay experience in overhead games. Our point of view is already removed from reality. If it were first person like, say, Skyrim, then we have a reason for photorealism. But here, we do not. The characters do not look cartoonish to me as some have complained. The hand-painted environments, however, should have looked a bit less hand-painted.

I have only played extensively with the Barbarian class thus far, and I love it. The skill sets feel awkward to pull off given the action bar/mouse button combo, but the abilities themselves make for truly awesome moments of epic destruction. Using Ground Stomp with a Wrenching Smash rune in conjunction with a Mountain's Call-runed Earthquake ability leads to almost instant kills of large numbers of mobs. Combine that with Whirlwind when facing more powerful monsters and you've got some serious win. Not particularly necessary on Normal difficulty, but I am quite fond of the tactic so sue me.

The music is okay. I enjoy the gothic tones of the previous games which helped create a sense of loneliness. I've yet to hear the famous Tristram theme, one of my all time favorite pieces, and it's strange absence takes away from the game.

Overall, though, despite the shortcomings, the game has yet to fail me. I love hack and slash, I love that there is a story present, and that we are getting some loose story ends tied up here in this semi-finale for the series' legendary arc. Again, don't let the whiners fool you. It's a game, and it entertains immensely.

That's not rating the art, that's rating it's delivery. That's the equivalent of giving The Avengers a 3/10 because you waited in a long line for your tickets and your theater smelled bad. I'm not trying to dismiss the shortcomings of the game itself, because there are certainly a few. The graphics may be dated. Veterans of this franchise know this has always been the case. One of Diablo II's biggest demerits was the aged visuals. The art styling has certainly changed from the previous entries. I like it when a developer takes risks going for a specific style. If every game I played strived for photo realism I'd get pretty bored. I get what they were trying to do artistically, with the whole epic story on a painted canvas, and I personally liked it. I do think the game is too bright by default. Even changing the gamma settings to their lowest in-game wasn't enough. I had to adjust my monitor's settings. You could claim my display wasn't calibrated properly, but I would take that as a direct insult and slap you silly. The lack of talent points... disappoints. See what I did there? This does make it feel like an RPG-Lite. There were certain encounters during the game where it was convenient to swap out skills that better suited the situation. Still... I think a respec option or dual spec would have appeased myself and many others more than the runes solution. I like customizing the spells but it doesn't feel like the character you're playing is your own, like the predecessors. I'm not sure why this design decision was made. Maybe to appeal to a novice/new generation of gamers? Cause the game didn't have a large enough fan base... The game's music and sound effects are exceptional. If you think different, go order another set of Sonic Earz or something. While Matt Uelman's talents are now with Runic, Blizzard seemed to just stay the course. You'll hear no complaints from me concerning that. The voice acting is solid, typical for a Blizzard game. The greatest form of flattery is imitation. Blizzard's genre defining franchise has influenced some excellent titles recently. Runic Games (Blizzard North - Part Deux) released the exceptional Torchlight in 2009. The sequel's release is on the horizon with multiplayer included this time around. For those that love stats and building crazy class combinations, I can't recommend Titan Quest (with Immortal Throne expansion) enough. I enjoyed playing this game. Was it everything that I had hoped and expected it would be? No, no it was not. I'm not going to throw in plot spoilers, promise. The varied scenery is nice. The character building felt overly simplified. There were points in the story where I tilted my head and said, "Really?!" The campaign felt shorter than the previous titles. The amount of time that has passed between sequels, I believe, is a disadvantage for Blizzard. The nostalgia conjured, anticipation fueled, and expectations built by this single title nearly demands perfection. Diablo III was not perfection. Maybe I, along with many others, were too naive and expected just that. I get the feeling the same game would've been more well received if it was a fresh IP from another developer. Expand

D3 is actually a cleverly-disguised, free-to-play MMO that allows you to play most of the content solo. So if MMOs generally aren't your thing, you probably aren't going to like D3, but if you understand that an want to try a new one, you'll probably be pretty happy with the result. The server complaints are even more silly, because here it is, a week later, and things are stable as can be. I'd recommend you ignore any review written within the 5/15/12 - 5/20/12 date range, as the launch of any substantially-awaited online game tends to be fraught with grumpy customers who lack patience and get frustrated at the lack of instant gratification, rather than look at the long-term possibilities. As time goes by, lots more people will come around to this game and realize how knee-jerk and ridiculous the launch-week hysterics were. This is a quality game and has a lot of life right out of the box. No one who isn't a giant crybaby will be regretting buying this game 6 months to a year from now, once the realization dawns on them how fun this game can actually be. Expand

That name has sent a shiver of anticipation down my spine ever since the confirmation of its existence back in 2008. I spent countless hours of my youth playing its predecessors, to which the RSI in wrists is testament. As the release date drew closer I researched obsessively on the minimum required performance to ensure a constant 60 FPS. After the system was built I paid the premium to get Diablo III via Blizz's digital delivery, ready to install and play the moment the servers went live.

The first login took 45 minutes of constant login spamming. I was in! I spent a while just wandering around in a rush of excitement, taking in everything. I barely noticed the lag teleporting me halfway back across the screen, until I was disconnected from the server. I wasn't able to log in again until the following day. At this point I was left with seriously mixed feelings, the disaster of the launch and the sweet euphoria of finally playing this game fighting for dominance.

Since then it's been a bit over a week. I'm still playing, but I'm not happy with the experience.

In D1 and D2, the gameplay was frenzied and frenetic. It always felt as thought your character was a moment from death, and you had to be ready with a potion or scroll of town portal to get out of danger. That feeling of split second timing is gone. Potions are only used sparingly, have been mostly replaced by health globes which you run over to use. Potions also have a cool down period, which makes combat more difficult than it should be when facing powerful creatures. Town portal is now a spell on your toolbar, and once triggered it charges up before activating. Moving your character will interrupt the casting. All this results in feeling like a spectator rather than a player, that whether you live or die is based on whether you can make your character run around in circles long enough to get away from mobs that are too big.

Even the characters movement has been slowed down, and the run button is gone. Couple this with the large size of the maps and it can take an age to complete some parts of the game. This is exacerbated by the fact that maps will reset after you disconnect, and disconnects happen automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity. This is a poor decision on Blizzard's part. I would like to be able to interrupt gameplay if I need to without worrying about getting back to the computer to move the mouse.

The loot drops in the first two acts are poor. There is little incentive to take loot back as most items yield less than 10 gold. Most magic items are less than 100, and rares less than 300. It's baffling that Blizzard would choose to change the loot mechanics as they are arguably the Diablo series' defining aspect. Instead we have a blacksmith, complete with an upgrade mechanic lifted straight from Blizzard's MMO titles, who can craft higher stat items. Of course you have to pay gold to upgrade him and access the higher stat items. These items require salvaged materials that you get from destroying magic, rare, and unique items. Most of these have a number of random magic properties. To date I have only used one, yes, one of these items as all the others have had useless random stats assigned. The amount of gold and magic items required to craft one of these items is ridiculous. At least D2 was honest about and called it gambling.

Then there's the length. Despite the thing feeling like you're wading through molasses most of the time, it's over all too quickly. But wait, it's OK because Blizz have helpfully included multiple difficulty levels. Each one is unlocked sequentially once the last mode is beaten so you can play it all over again for better loot and higher levels. Just in case that wasn't enough of an incentive, there are also further plot developments for some NPC's that only unfold in higher difficulties.

This is not an acceptable alternative to making a decent length game, Blizzard. You've have twelve years. TWELVE! You really need to do better. Unless of course you're holding back in anticipation of the - wait for it - EXPANSION PACK! I will play this through to the end. I've spent too much money, and waited too long not to. That said, I feel this has been a missed opportunity for Blizzard. It's more like "World Of DiabloCraft" than a true "Diablo III". Almost all the (technical) issues with this game could be fixed by just giving players the choice to have offline only characters. That way people who want to play a single player game (y'know, the majority who bought the damn thing) could play without lag destroying the experience.

2/10 (And thats only in recognition of the talented artists and designers who put their blood sweat and tears into this. The money men behind the online requirement/DRM and real money auction house... well, most of the internet has an opinion on you guys. Just google it).

If any other company had created this pile of steaming doo, it would not be getting a 90 metacritic. It would be getting a low 70's. Diablo 3 is a perfect expression of everything that is wrong with the gaming press. It's time someone shines a light on it and start embarrassing these sheeple.

Ok so being a huge fan of Diablo 1 and 2, I was overjoyed when I got access to Diablo 3 Beta and loving every second of my first play through of the beta (played through it plenty of times with all classes) I could not wait for the full game (had my collectors edition pre ordered) I got the game and installed and started playing with 0 issues on day 1. Diablo 3 is a fantastic game I like the fact that I don't have to allocate stats because I don't have to guess where to put them or look up builds which btw in Diablo 2 nobody had unique builds, each class only had a couple builds each that worked well. Now I don't need to guess when I'm using a monk hmmmm would it be better to level dex or int, same with the massive skill tree's with almost 0 way to reset points, Diablo 3 has plenty of skills to play around with which you aquire from leveling up, plus 5 rune stones for each skill which modify what the skill does. So let's break this down to actual numbers. Each class has 6 skill catagories 4 of those catagories have 4 skills and 2 have 5 skills that equals 22 skills with 5 modifying rune stones each THEN your character has another 15 passive skills so that's 37 skills per class with 130 ways to modify them so yeah that's a pretty extensive skill system.

Graphics, my only worry about Diablo 3 before playing it was that it was going to look to much like WoW, then I got into the beta and was pleasantly surprised, the graphics are not colorful like WoW there definetly dark like Diablo 2, they aren't state of the art like Battlefield 3 then again Diablo isn't a first person shooter, it's a top down action RPG and for a top down action RPG the graphics are good, the back round environment flows really well with the foreground, the character and monster animations are great.

I see people complaining about the story too, the story is fine, it certainly isn't inferior to Diablo 2's story they are on par with each other.

The sound and music is also fantastic, if I didn't know the team that worked on Diablo 2 wasn't involved with Diablo 3, I would be surprised that they aren't as the same twangy, moody, creepy music is still there and sounds great.

DRM this is where the whiny babies really shined! Ok having to be online to be able to play is annoying when the servers are down, I've been playing since the game came out and I haven't had one issue with the server, maybe its because I don't have time to play the game 24/7 and don't notice every little second of downtime but what I have played on average 2 to 3 hours a day since May 15th I've had 0 issues with the server. I can understand that a lot of people are going to base there bad review solely on DRM because they can't torrent the game for free, I for one found the $59.99 price tag or in my case $99 price tag worth every penny and I'm happy to support Blizzard.

In conclusion I personally love nostalgia i.e game remakes and long time span sequels and Diablo 3 DOES NOT disappoint in any aspect, I love playing the game and getting to area's that I've explored before and see there graphical improvements or coming across stuff like the moon clan and seeing how awesome they look in D3! I find it sad after reading a ton of these reviews where people are giving the game 0 because they have issues connecting to the server 15 minutes after the game launches, its pathetic really. So people please don't buy into the trolls, seek out the intellegently written reviews good or bad then base your decision on that. Worth the 11 year wait? YES DEFINETLY I can only hope that it doesn't take long for expansions and new content!!

Alot of people wish it had a single player offline version. I agree with this. I would be online anyway, but I can see the point in it. Of-course it does suck if Blizzards servers go down or glitch out, like they did the first few days after release. That is why I am only giving the game a 9. However, The game is very fun. Act 1 and most of Act 2 in normal mode are pretty easy, but the difficulty does pick up alot. Before release I replayed Diablo 2. It was still a fun game. Seriously thou, Diablo 3 really does put it to shame in every aspect. I didn't like the idea of no more skill trees and stat points at first, but now I like the new system better than the old. When playing Diablo 2, I would lock into a couple talents and dump all the skill points into them to make them strong. The side effect is I am stuck doing the same thing throughout the game. Diablo 3 is not like that. You can configure your character for different situations like boss fights, outdoor, indoor, etc, and keep changing things up as you keep getting new talents/runes. Great game, lots of fun. I would recommend to anyone with a decent internet connection. Expand

There were some serious launch day issues, but for me and the people I know playing, those were taken care of withing 3-4 days, so should no longer really be a concern. I think most of the very low reviews are due to the fact that this isn't just an updated diablo 2, and residual frustration and the launch day issues.
Diablo 2 was a 'loot' game, and for this reason, many people have also been calling diablo 3 a 'loot' game. I have to disagree. Does a bunch of loot explode out of enemies when you kill them? Yes. Do you need to get better stuff to progress? Yes. However, the item system has been so far simplified in diablo 3, you can decide pretty much instantly if a piece of equipment is better or worse. For weapons by far the most important number is the damage per second, written in large letters on the top of the card. For other equipment mostly what matters are buffs to your one primary stat, and perhaps also to a lesser extent vitality. Which elemental damage a weapon does doesn't seem to make any difference, and any game affecting effects happen with such low frequency that they don't really matter. What this means in the end is the only thing I spend any time considering with equipment is whether to salvage or sell it. In D2, you would spend a lot of time pondering the combined set of equipment and how to get your various buffs to work together to balance your performance. Not really the case I Diablo 3. Looting is a component, but a heavily de-emphasized one.
So if Diablo 3 is not a loot game, what is it? The defining feature is the skill system. With around 30 active skills for each class, and a large number if passive skills, and several rune based variations there is an extroadinary number of builds. Every time I level up I rethink my whole skill distribution, and there seem always to be a few viable alternatives. All the various skill-rune combinations have their own visual effects, so testing out your new build is always entertaining. It apparently takes 2 play throughs to reach the cap, and with 5 classes to play there is a large amount of fun to be had. I'm not sure though how much fun it will be past the cap, since then all your'll have to play around with is the simplistic loot system, but no game lasts forever.
My only real complaint is the lack of built in voice chat, which seems like a ridiculous oversight in this age of multiplayer games.

The game is at the point for me where i am struggling to focus on my build and choose which skills i like most. Gone is stacking 20 points into 3-4 skills and the useless skills i had to use in my trees to get to the one i wanted, gone is the tedious spam into vitality and the few points i needed to assign to other attributes to use items. The auction house is a welcome addition and i find a good part of my time exchanging goods on it as well as trying to find a good price for that all important upgrade.

No. Do I wish I could get my money back? Absolutely. Expand

The initial server stability problems were terrible but forgivable. Unfortunately, this game just isn't very good.

To begin, the actual campaign is very short. Acts 1 & 2 come in at a reasonable size, but Acts 3 & 4 just feel terribly rushed. This should be offset by the replayability of facing multiple difficulty levels in new procedurally generated zones. The generated levels just don't work; they compare poorly even to the decade-old Diablo 2. Typically there are few if any variations to the level structure, and randomization is achieved by dropping objectives and monsters haphazardly over this template. It feels completely entirely the same as when you cleared it the last time.

The game's story is weak. Admittedly, no one really plays an ARPG for the story, but this one just feels very lazy. In Diablo 2 events happened because you were chasing Diablo. It drove the story and events happened within that framework. In Diablo 3 it's not really clear what you're doing; you simply react to a series of events. One thing happens and you investigate, and once you finish off one antagonist a brand new one pops up to advance the game. There's little sense of continuity from one mission to the next. The one surprise built into the story is utterly predictable.

Of course, the important part of an ARPG is going to be in the characters, combat and actual gameplay.

Combat is a mixed bag. The developers have really tried to make fight more tactical at all levels of the game. When it works it really *works* and produces a fun and exciting experience. This really isn't made to scale properly with level difficulty. Rather than monsters acting more intelligently or providing more varied encounters, higher difficulties just tack on more hitpoints and damage to everything. There is a sweet spot where technique and character build really matter, but for most of the game you either crush everything without a thought or just die to your foe without even the chance to react. Champion mobs get special modifiers which can produce unique fights, but once again turn into a situation whereby they are completely easy, or impossibly difficult. There is definitely a spot where characters and difficulty match up perfectly. If Blizzard could manage to match these up more consistently then this could be a great game. For most of the game, they just miss. The place where this is most apparent is in the end game. It is apparent that Inferno mode was never properly playtested. Because the AI doesn't become any smarter as you advance, Inferno mode was made difficult by simply piling damage onto monster. The practical result is that classes that can avoid damage and attack from range can move straight to the end, whereas classes that were meant to mitigate damage and get close to the enemies cannot participate at all. In summation: poorly tuned, lousy story, and repetitive.

    3/10.

Disappointing but correct. Few contents and too much easy. But sounds, graphics and pleasure of bash monsters is present. This game is polished but i repeat , there is few contents.

It's pretty simple. I can't play the single player when I want thanks to the always-on DRM.

Otherwise, it's a prettier Diablo II, which is nice I suppose.

Don't bother if you live in Austalia or NZ. Servers are always down our primetime cause we stuck with North American server. Can't even play single player due to constant online DRM. Can only review on the playing experience and pretty boring looking at error 33. Music is tedious after a while.

So much hype about this game. Really crap story, awful CRM, dated graphics, no customization. **** u blizzard for ruining this franchise! I hope Torchlight 2 to be better then this...

For the price of the game, it was too short and linear (I don't care about harder modes). It is a game about customization and for each class there are only a few viable options to use. With no skill point trade-offs and character skill development, it is just a simple hack and slash.
I expected something better for the price and 10 years of development.

This game is very disappointing. The main problems are:1) there aren't really important innovations from Diablo2. 2)there isn't any kind of atmosphere(and that was very important in Diablo 2).3)the soundtrack sucks(and it's very similar but not as good as wow soundtrack).4)the skills and talent assignment is too simple.5) the drm online sistem(it's a good thing only if you can chooseThis game is very disappointing. Maybe to sell a lot of copies.. Sorry for my bad English but it's not my main language. Expand

If I buy a game, and specially when that game is not a MMO , and I'm a single player I want to play it!, even if no exist a conection. I don't want to loose my play-time(in my weekend) looking if the servers are avaliable, are ready or all burn out, that's no my problem! I paid for a game and the result or this is "I can't play it"

My score has to be 8 (the game is great, but i hope something more from Diablo) but users are so stupid that gives 0 and 0 just for the server error, so my score must be 10.

Great game, thanks blizzard for coming back with Diablo.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
