With so many fanboys either defending or bashing this game, I felt the need to give a good honest review with objectivity, so here it is... my first review.

Briefly though, I will say that the game is overall a disappointment to me. I feel that if the game was the same exact game made by a different publisher with a different name, it would be thought of as a fun little decent game.

Briefly though, I will say that the game is overall a disappointment to me. I feel that if the game was the same exact game made by a different publisher with a different name, it would be thought of as a fun little decent game. Being made by Blizzard though, with the development time and resources that they've had, and the third installment of a once awesome series, it's really rather unfortunate that there are so many frustrating aspects and problems with this game.

    The good:

Not everything is bad about this game, so I'll start out with a few positives.

-For the most part, the cutscenes and cinematics are top notch. I really enjoyed both the end of act 1 and end of act 3 cinematics quite a bit.

-Interacting with world objects is a nice addition. I'll never get tired of blowing up tables and caravans.

-Achievements are a nice, fun addition. Who doesn't like achievements?

    The neutral:

-The graphics are ok. I personally don't like the "WoWified" look , but they aren't BAD either. This is obviously a matter of personal taste, but I certainly wish they had gone more the route of Diablo 1 and less WoW.

-The music is once again, ok. It's better than Diablo 2, but after 15 years I would have figured that they could come out with something better than or even on par with Diablo 1 music and it falls short there. -If you're like me, you will wish that they had gone back to the "demonic / creepy" dungeon crawler feel of D1 and less of the cartoonish, somewhat boring overland exploration of D2. Again, this is a personal preference and fans of Diablo 2 will likely be content here.

-The auction house. Personally, I'm a fan of it........ if it would ever work (more on this later). I realize that this is once again a personal preference, but I don't see the downside. It's nice to be able to sell your loot, buy upgrades, and "playing the AH" is a game in and of itself. I don't even mind the real money aspect (coming soon) because lets face it, people were going to do it anyway.

Crafting- I'm a hardcore crafter in every MMO I play. The addition of crafting in D3 was a good thought, but it doesn't really meet my standards. Maybe you feel differently.

Story- It's not awful, but I was expecting more.

Classes- I'm not terribly upset with them, but again I feel they could have done more. Where's the Paladin from D2? The classes seem generally ok, but I can't help but feel as though they took a step back when they certainly should have been taking giant leaps forward.

    The bad:

Unfortunately, the bad is pretty much everything else.

-Character customization is non-existent. Every level 60 (which is stupidly the max level) of any particular class will be exactly the same in both looks, skills, and stats as the next. They will perhaps be played differently, but there's ZERO customization.

-To go along with the previous point, you can't assign any skills or stats. Want more STR or INT? Sorry, it gets automatically assigned for you. Completely boring.

-Online DRM. This point has been beaten to death, so I won't go much further into it. I'm actually ok with the always online system to a degree, the problem is.....

-Their servers suck. I realize it's still a new game, but this is a company with ridiculous assets and they KNEW what their server loads would be. Its inexcusable to have as much server disruption / lag / downtime as they have had. -Despite the auction house being a perhaps fun addition, it's constantly down or bugged. Seriously, it's the most flawed, frustrating system in any game I've played in a long, long time.

-Difficulty. It's face roll easy the first couple times through. The only possible way to die is lag. In the hardest settings though, it's nigh impossible - especially for certain classes.

-There's next to no character progression. Many of the best skills in the game are some of the very first skills/runes you get. It never feels like you're actually getting stronger because of new skills, only because your gear will get better.

-And that brings us to gear. Whoever designed the gear/loot system in this game needs to be fired... immediately. For a game based almost completely on the gear grind, I don't think they could have possibly done a worse job implementing it. The only stat that matters on weapons is damage/dps, because almost every skill scales off of it. Even Sorcs / Witch Doctors will use maces and axes because their ranged skills are based only on DPS. Frankly, it's beyond stupid. Items are boring and bland. Legendary items are just a mish-mash of mediocre stats thrown onto an item. I could go on and on..

Overall, it just feels like a dumbed-down mediocre game compared to what it could and SHOULD have been.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good:

Graphics are fair enough, nothing groundbreaking, but not what I would describe as bad.

New skill system is fairly innovative and interesting.

    The Bad:

Always-on DRM. Can't play this game without Blizz's servers up and a broadband internet connection.

The storyline is indescribably bad. Diablo walks into heaven and single handedly destroys it, and mounds and mounds of angels because evidently God doesn't care too terribly about his home being wrecked. And then Diablo then dies to a group of up to 4 nephelim (nephelim being somebody who has human and angelic parents), so: Angels > humans, Diablo > Angels, One Half Human-One Half Angel > Diablo. Makes perfect sense.

    The controls, while being very similar to Diablo 2 are not at all optimized for the new skill system and there are no options for click-for-everything. As a result, especially for ranged classes, controls can feel clunky, especially in combination with the horrendous lag. Which brings me to my next point;

The lag is terrible thanks to the fact that 90% of the game is done through server-side processing. The game client installed locally on the user's computer does little more than contain the graphical assets and display them for the user. Movements, abilities, monsters, and all other operations performed in the game are processed by the server and as a result, have never seen a ping below 250ms. According to Blizzard this is A-OK (the latency bar stays green until you hit 300ms, at which point it will turn yellow). So at minimum, anything you do takes 1 quarter second before it ever actually happens. This leads to dying many times to monsters you thought you had plenty of distance away from.

Sadly, the boss battles are all boring. The only one that was of any interest to me was Belial. Diablo was pathetically easy. Just left click on him and hold down. That's about all there is to it.

Sad thing was, that even with the new skill system that few of the skills are ever really required, most of the time you can just left click your way to victory which really made the game feel very bland.

All in all, I bought Diablo 3 with low expectations since Blizzard hasn't been known as of late to produce quality material, yet sadly even my low expectations were let down. Diablo 3 is not worth $60 in even the most remote respect.

There is no substance in this game. There is no replay value. This software is terrible. No deep thought was invested into design of item/skill mechanics. Gameplay is mundane and monotonous. There is no rewards/profit system even fundamentally to keep players motivated. I fail to see how this Starcraft 2 mod (Diablo 3) made it past testing phase.

This game is okay, but it is nothing like Diablo 2. It has been modeled around being sustainable income for Blizzard.

Currently the only way to be able to farm gear that is worth anything is to use the gear that is worth anything. The only reason people are able to do so right now is because they abused overpowered builds, but they have since been nerfed so nobody else can farm it.

Inferno in this game is difficult because of boosted enemy damage and hp, not a change in actual challenge. It's one big gear check.

Since you can't make gold without farming good items to buy good items in order to farm good items, you'll need to use the Real Money Auction House when it comes out.

It's one big ploy for your money, gents... just wait for Torchlight 2 or go play something else.

    2. Where are the really great items I've collected? Oh their gone because I've been hacked. Great job Blizzard. Wouldn't be an issue if you took care of issue 1.

    3. Awful story, even worse than the light story from the previous games. At least they were compelling.

    4. Good for people who simply enjoy getting stuff and killing things. Perfect game for greedy, idiotic American manboys. This game will be a huge hit, make tons of money and ruin gaming for about 10 years. Those of us who enjoy story, action, suspense and tension will have to suck it up for a while. It's the Kim Kardashian of games; all hype, no substance, makes tons of money and you can't figure out why.

Not thrilled about the glyph system either, that was just copied over from WoW. Would have rather seen them go a different direction here. Would probably give the game a 6-7ish on the above points. What kills it for me is the always on DRM (I'm sorry, "achievement tracker/auction house access"). Game lags/rubberbands/disconnects based solely on B.NETs servers. You will ALWAYS be at the mercy of blizzards servers. Want to play when you don't have access to the 'net, to bad. I will never buy a game that has an always on DRM scheme (review based off the beta/starter edition).

What if you have a laptop and want to play it somewhere with poor/unreliable wireless signal quality or no wireless signal? You can't. When playing a single player game on my desktop I'll be running through a field and then in a flash my position will reset to where it was a second or two ago when the server last synched, its totally jarring. Sometimes when this happens I'll be surrounded by monsters and instantly die. I'll be pretty far into a dungeon and my connection will get dropped and I'll get booted back to the game lobby and have to repeat the level. All this is even if blizzard allows you to log in to their servers to begin with, hope you don't want to play your game when their servers are down or at capacity! I'm still having lag issues on my desktop over a week after release, I'm not whining about the launch-day issues that they improved upon over the first couple days, and this may in fact be my ISPs fault rather than Blizzard's. Blizzard really should have given you the choice of an open or closed system like they did in Diablo 2, this design decision to require a constant high quality internet connection at all times killed my enjoyment of this game. As to the gameplay, its pretty much what you'd expect, an updated version of diablo with new classes and skills. Graphics are decent, voice acting is good and the monsters the game has allowed me to see so far have been interesting - I like some of the vomiting zombies and giant bloated corpses that explode into a mass of worms, I like how you see monsters climb up the sides of cliffs and climb in through windows before joining the combat, creative stuff like that is good. Story is decent, kind of a rehash of the original story so far but it makes me nostalgic when they drop names like "king leoric" in the story. I'm one who doesn't really want a long story in an action rpg so the story is at just about the right level for me. Gameplay however seems dumbed down from predecessors, not nearly as much character customization as I would like and my only deaths so far have been due to lag. $60 for this is an insult, should be $20. Too many people seem to be too emotionally invested in the series and wanted Diablo 2 HD. And because that's not what they got they've started a smear campaign against Blizzard and Diablo 3. Most every decision made by the developers for the game has been a positive one from a game design standpoint. It has made the game more accessible to more people, increased flexibility and customization, improved the community, and overall improved the entire game over its predecessors. I would challenge anyone to find someone new to the series, sit them down, and have the new player compare Diablo 2 to Diablo 3 where the person would not chose Diablo 3 over 2.

Common complaints: The story isn't great. - This is true, the overall storyline isn't bad, but the writing certainly isn't top-notch. I'll admit this is one area Diablo 2 beats Diablo 3. Graphics aren't gritty enough - I don't see this one. There's plenty of bloody bodies all over the place. Piles of corpses, torture equipment and gore aplenty, in some areas more than others. But it's always fitting the setting. And this is true in D2 as well. If you really compare screenshots from both games side by side, you'll find less difference here than many seem to claim. Yes, the art direction did change, and Blizzard Irvine has more of a Warcraft/WoW mentality than Blizzard North had. But even with the change in art direction it's still reasonably true to its predecessor. Others claim it's cartoony, certainly a matter of opinion and up for debate, but I don't find D3 significantly more cartoony than Diablo 2 was.

Always on connection - Considering how full of hacks and dupes Diablo 2 became from it's offline nature. I'm really glad for this. An internet connection is pretty much ubiquitous anywhere you go anymore. Any hotel worth staying at has internet. Any of my friends or family's places have internet. The coffee shop down the street has internet. My supermarket has internet. There's really very few places I could go to get away from it. And certainly anywhere I'd want to play D3, I'd have an internet connection available. This is simply no longer an issue for the vast majority of people in a developed nation. It also comes with the perks of always being able to see your friends' games and being able to hop in and join them. Or chat with friends playing WoW or SC2. I'm not really sure if I'd call it DRM, but as far as DRM goes, this is pretty innocuous. There are many far worse examples of DRM out there to be found.

Skill/Attribute distribution is gone. - Awesome, now people can't screw up their characters because they didn't go to some website to read about strategies that are valid in Hell difficulty. Fact was, even with the skill/stat distribution, by the time you reached the end game, nearly every viable build had the same stat allocation, and most classes only had a couple viable skill allocations. The people who think this was a good idea either never played at the highest levels, or did, and just wanted to stand out as being somehow better than someone new to the game who simply didn't know better. No one should ever have to re-make a character for it to be viable just to play at higher difficulties.

No character customization - This one partially ties in with the last point about abilities and skills. I think I've made my point there. For everything else though, Every Diablo 3 class has more abilities (considering runes for the most part significantly change an ability's effects and visuals), every class can be both genders, Every major piece of armor shows up visually on your character. You can dye your armor. The customization in D3 is terrific, it's just all done through gear and ability selection. There are more viable builds for every class in Hell/Inferno in D3 than there are for each class in Hell in D2.

I like the graphics, I enjoy the music and sound design. I like the art design. I enjoy the game. I enjoy the mechanics of the game. I love the multiplayer, and easily hopping into games with my friends. My wife enjoys the game. My friends all enjoy the game. I've not heard a single complaint from any of them outside of an occasional lag spike. At the time of writing this review the User Score for D3 is sitting at 4.1, and not a single person I know on my friends list (all 20 of them) would rate this at less than an 8. I realize that's anecdotal evidence at best and a statistically insignificant data sample, but I feel it's still pertinent. Ignore the whiners with the sense of entitlement that didn't get what they wanted. Diablo 3 is a lot of fun, and well worth the money.

The first, and most important being, the time spent in development was ridiculously long. In fact, Im sure this series was ignored for the majority of the "10 years!?!" everyone loves to harp on about.. and rightfully so. Considering the lack luster graphics and identical gameplay/storytelling format to the preceeding Diablos, I don't think any time paradoxes would have manifested if this game had come out one or two years after diablo 2. Its not technically impressive in the least. Next we have the infuriating online play requirement. Its bad enough that when my internet goes down, unless I can flip steam into offline mode, I have no games (that I've.. you know.. paid for) that will run. And now I have a shiny new game, which classically was primarily single player, with the same online requirement. This fault by no means stands out, most games these days are doing the online required thing, I just expected something different from Blizzard. And there it is, the main problem with Diablo 3.. its not different. Blizzard has always been a game company we've expected great innovations from. No rushed release dates, its done when its done.. usually the product was worth the wait. Not this time. Diablo 3 is a carbon copy of previous diablos in almost every reguard. Potions are instant, Skill points don't exist.. thats pretty much what we waited 10 years for. Graphically, and play control wise, this Diablo feels about 8 years overdue, and it seems like that isn't lost on most people. Rather than an eventual triumph and rebirth of one of the most legendary gaming series, Blizzard has done little more than skate by with a game sorely lacking in innovation and techincal improvement. This is an excellent game with exactly the production values you have come to expect from Blizzard. I have not encountered significant problems logging on, the lag spikes have been short and tolerable, and other than that I have no complaints. The game itself is exactly what I expected and I expected great things.

I started a barbarian, but I just couldn't keep playing. If you like having input on how your character progresses ala stat point distribution or skill points, this is not the game for you. The character levels on its own, and you are given six slots to choose which skills to use, and which runes to attach to the powers to alter the skill. Skills are doled out as you level in a pre-planned fashion. That's it for customization. It's a simple system, and if you like that sort of thing, you'll love this game. I know some people love the "streamlined" system and thinks it's an improvement, and I'm glad those people can enjoy this game. I didn't, however, and I couldn't feel connected to my character as a result of having no input on how it leveled. That issue, coupled with the internet DRM, is why I give the game a terrible score, and why I won't be purchasing it. The combat plays like Diablo, and the music is Diablo, but that's where the similarities end for me. Do yourself a favor and play the trial before buying this, to make sure its the kind of game you want. I was expecting something completely different. Otherwise, I suggest pre-ordering Torchlight 2, as you'll get Torchlight 1 for free to scratch your Diablo itch while you wait for T2 to come out this summer. Consequently, Torchlight 1, a game with a far lower budget released in 2009, has held my attention just as long as Diablo 3, and I'm still enjoying it. I think that says something about Diablo 3 and it's level of quality, at least as far as players who were expecting the ability to customize their character in a similar way to the previous two installments of Diablo. You people are on freakin crack. You let a game get you all hyped up more than even the best game out there should. This is a great game. Great story. I get the feel for diablo 3. I like the new system. I like the new features. Don't expect some orgasmic trip, but if you want a great video game, Diablo 3 is for you.

I just started playing Inferno level and I need to say that apart of normal level the game is OK. On normal level I died three times, all of them because I felt asleep. But multi even on the normal level was different story. No wonder you need to have an internet connection - there is no other way to play that game, and come on, who in times of tethering don't have an internet. However DRM is not there to protect us really, my fiend had been hacked twice already. All other issues are understandable - if you making a game so looong graphic engine become pretty old so you cannot expect fireworks. Performancwise the same it was a little behind - it was overheating my Q9400 (i'm playing BF3 on max and I had never had any issues).
I gave the 7 points only for playability, especially with friends and on higher levels of difficulty. I was afraid it will be worse than D2 (after beta I had that view). Fortunately the skills system is better than in D2 and let even casual players like me having fun (unlike D2 or starcraft2).

Nobody at Blizzard played through Diablo 3 or they all suck at RPGs. Jay Wilson (lead designer) claimed it would take at least a month to finish the game. People finished it on the hardest setting in less than 3 days. Their lack of RPG knowledge is reflected in the gameplay. The rampant bugs and server issues speak for themselves.

I enjoyed the story very much, the cutscenes are chilling. But MOST IMPORTANTLY: The game FEELS like Diablo. It's impossible to describe. My characters feel extremely powerful, but yet vulnerable. In the higher difficulties, I always have that feeling the original Diablo gave: I'm scared about what I might find around the next corner, but I have the courage to try. However, the bad FAR outweighs the good. - First is connectivity (DRM). I'm OK with it being online, but they need to stabilize the servers. I have a higher-end, very solid system with high-speed cable internet and I still get disconnects, huge latency spikes, and game crashes (2 of which have caused me to lose loot from a boss).
    - Second (related to DRM) is the hacked accounts. While many users are at fault for hacked accounts, this would never be an issue if there wasn't DRM required.
    - Third is the graphics. They are decent and I understand that they are marketing to all systems and not just top-end, but they look worse than WoW which is almost 10 years old. How can we have gorgeous games like Skyrim out there with games still being released that look like D3!?
    - Fourth, huge lack of features. Can't break apart chat channels, disorganized friend's listings, terrible searching/sorting capability of AH, etc. There are so many of these basic features they could have ported over from WoW and they would have been perfect but right now they're just garbage.

This game feels like an Indie game that was developed in about a year or two, not a big 'box office' hit with 8+ years in the making. Fun, but a long way to go to be a 'good game'.

It was January of 97 when I picked up D1 from a local store, I excitedly brought it home and played it for approximately 4 hours before my cd rom drive crapped out. Since you couldn't play it without the CD I never played it again. ( I didn't learn about CD cracks until much later )

A similar thing happened with D3, my wife purchased the game in secret, which really made my day. I ended up installing it and immediately played for about an hour. That first hour was the only time I'd be able to play for several days as any attempt to login was met with error codes because the service was down. When I finally got on to play I decided to stick to 'single player' until I got a grasp on the game, however I was ( and still am ) subjected to lag that stutters my character around the screen placing me in precarious situations so repeatedly to add an extra level of challenge trying to anticipate the lag. The problem wasn't on my end and still isn't, I have access to multiple internet services both personal and a high powered business line related to my work. The latency was about the same, hanging around 300 during choppiness and spiking to 500-600 at the worst moments. The good latency was around 160, this compares to an average latency of 20-50 when just playing other multiplayer games.

I wasn't really angry until I started noticing that I lost quest rewards due to lag, that's when I felt like I was being punished. There was no achievement to defeating a major boss, being kicked just as he dies and returning to discover all of his rare drops had evaporated. Another way I feel punished is that I'm also a casual player, I work all day and come home to unwind by playing games. This predictably is during peak times for the battle net servers which causes my incidents of lag to go up as well. I feel like I have to plan my gaming late at night or mornings in order to have a better experience.

All of that for a game that is an inferior experience to D2:
    1. Skill system simplified, characters are not unique
    2. Resolution of graphics is low, even blurry, despite running it on high and having a great pc
    3. Story is average.
    4. Auction house is pointless, browsing it just only reminds me of my casual play style being self defeating since i don't play enough to get these amazing drops. I do not intend on paying another penny on this game.

I have over 50 hours into this game and it hasn't even been out for two weeks. I love it, I can't get enough of it, I want to max out every single class in the game. And I will at the rate I'm going within the next couple of weeks. So here is my grading: Story - 7/10 It's not terrible but it's certainly not the best and coming from Blizzard it is certainly not up to par. Graphics - 7/10 this one is well-thought out and I have to say that instead of incorporating a lot of different graphics options into the game Blizzard left it at about medium compared to a game like well, even Starcraft 2 looks better in many areas. No to the people who think it's cartoony, it does not look like WoW, I hate that F$#@!#$ game and I would not compare them ever, it is very dark and creepy if you don't think so, get to the basement of Leoric's manor in ACT I, then maybe you'll agree. Gameplay - 10/10 Now this is where Blizzard shines, everything from the loot system to the crafting (not the best, but by far better than some I have seen), it's all so addictive it's ridiculous, that's probably what has kept me going the most, knowing that I will get some kick ass bow for my Demon Hunter. Also, despite what some people might say I love the skills, and not just for the DH, but for all the classes. I have at least a level 20 of the Witch Doctor, Monk, and Demon Hunter, and I love the skills. COOP - I'm not going to rate this, I feel it still belongs under gameplay though. With 4 people on nightmare difficulty(or normal for that matter), this game is great fun, get 4 of your buddies together and it's a blast, running with skype and throwing each other loot if you're different classes, the game get's incredibly challenging and very very interesting. ********* I will end on this note, it is a fun game, however, $60 for a disappointing launch worldwide and a server based game that has ABSOLUTELY NO single player, makes me somewhat angry, but I forgive for the fact that these issues have certainly gotten better and if you disagree you're either an idiot or you haven't played since you wrote your 0/10 review on the day this game came out. I'm not saying it's the best game out there, and frankly Torchlight II will probably give it a run for it's money, but it's a solid game, with solid mechanics, a fun all around campaign to trek through alone or with friends, and IMO it was worth the money for me. Take that with a grain of salt, go to youtube and watch some gameplay vids, then make your own decision. Expand

You might ask yourself why they feel the need to take out talent trees and put in this panda style skill system, and the answer is that they felt like it would be easier to balance... The word "Balance" has ruined this game, they were actually so lazy when making this game that they didnt feel like dealing with any other variables than necessary so they went ahead and made it to what skills you picked had little to no impact on how you play. This alone is a reason for me to say that this game has no replay value whatsoever, and it has even less satisfaction from beating it, the best feeling I got from beating Diablo 2 was to see my weak starting character transform into a heroic Juggernaut through the particular stacking of skills, I remember that I stacked so many points on my druid that I could constantly have 10 or so summoned wolfs helping me at once, this game lacks all of that original diversification therefore making it the retarded offspring of what was Diablo. Midnight Launch Eve - Got my copy and raced home to insert serial number

Everything Accomplished Go to Bed to wake up early and play.

Start my demon hunter around 930 am played for a couple hours servers are down.

Continue playing with several server down moments all the way through normal difficulty exploring everything and going through all of the semi-boring repetitive lore. Day 3 - Beat Diablo 3 on normal and begin to explore the problem plagued auction house and start to notice several other bugs in the game.

Day 4 - About halfway through nightmare, Game has lost its fun and feels like Im grinding for no reason what so ever anymore. No Real World PvP, WoW style auction house and lack of character customization.
Day 6 - After a break decide to go back and play some more with friends, beat nightmare and began hell...yet still terribly disappointed with the game, beat nightmare and move to hell difficulty. Game play begins to require more strategy with groups and FORCED switching of skills to beat certain mobs and bosses. Beginning to see no real reason for the black smith as its redundant when the auction house is faster and sometimes cheaper also noticed that the way MF works has changed since diablo 2 and some stats are broken / read incorrectly with certain items equipped. Game keeps dropping me when I minimize for several seconds, making adjustments to my TDP and UDP drop settings on the router seemed to have fixed this a bit.
Day 7- Playing with my buddy and a higher level friend both having decently high MF after a friend that was outside our level range joined our game we noticed a significant decrease in yellow drops for that difficulty especially when none of us have beaten said bosses or champion mobs before, asked him to leave the game to try and see if him being outside the level range of the mobs effected the drop rate (AKA like an MMO where mobs are non-colored or GREYED out due to level range and do not drop loot anymore) did not seem to fix the problem. Only after everyone quitting the game and creating a new party was the problem rectified. Also took note that during peak game play hours rare drops seemed to happen less (Probably so the auction house doesn't get flooded and a ratio is kept especially since only 10 items are allowed on the AH at a time.)

Day 9 - Jumped online at an off peak time to test theory of rare drop ratio. So far evidence would dictate that it is true rare drop rates are lower during peak game play hours. Going to continue testing this theory without changing any gear and repetitively doing the same general quest / area with the same person as before.

My experience of the game so far ...
1 Graphics : Really loved the first play through even though the graphics were stolen from WoW except I give mad props to the implemented physics engine. The graphics are definitely not as evil feeling and dark as the original games which saddens me alot. I feel as though its diablo painted over WoW...and (SPOILER) **Whats up with this **** **** Pony Level? I was hoping for a cow level not some colorful pony level that hurts my eyes.** Fail on the graphics blizzard. 2. Sound: No complainants here really. Voice actors were good, I do think that some of the voice overs we WAYY to stereo-typical. Could have done a better job on the sound of some of the attacks and creatures for sure. BOSSES ESPECIALLY.

    3. Single Player Experience: Non Existent ; I did try to play the game solo when friends were not online, its way to easy. If you started playing multi player with friends you will no doubtly be geared better than soloists and it makes game play cheesy and boring.

    4. Multi player Game play : LAG LAG LAG , Having said that I have a good rig and great connection. Blizzard still has alot of kinks to work out. With a lacking choice in character classes and the lacking of a customizable skill tree instead of this forced style only allowing you to switch skills to certain buttons or hot keys to make you use "Strategy" for killing certain mobs in hell or inferno difficulty. A promised feature of PvP that was never released sadly hopefully it will soon especially if it only takes an average player 2 weeks of solid play to easily "Twink" out a level 60 character, I am not looking forward to the real currency auction house and arena based combat, I believe this will kill the game except for the WoW fanatics that will still be playing.

    Overall : Score - 3.5ish

I give them points for trying but money was on they're mind when they made the game and it was obviously rushed into production. I would have never guessed that they spent 4 years making this game. A new player to the franchise would even recognize that this was a poorly made game.

The fact that the developer can control when, how, and what you play is such a terrible idea and really treats the consumer like dirt when they have no say over what they're doing. The fact that your subjected to Blizzard's Battle.net, which I've never been impressed with, is another reason that can make playing this game alot more difficult. However, the bottom line is this: The game is super fun, especially with other people. The fact that every map basically is a randomly generated dungeon adds a fresh element to replaying the story on the harder difficulties. Whatever you think of Achievements, if you actually go out and try to obtain them, it'll make playing this game more fun and give you some goals to shoot for. The best thing, however, is definitely playing with other people. I've had the opportunity now to play through the story once in single-player and once with 3 other people and playing this game with a full party was so much fun. It really adds to everything that this game is and your missing out if you are only playing single player. You can even join public games with random people to see how it is but playing it with people you know and enjoy being around is the best part of this game, especially when everyone is playing different classes and your coordinating with each other especially on the harder difficulties. Yes, there are alot of problems that surround this game in how you get to the point where you are playing it. However, beyond the fairly simple story, this game is easily one of the best of the year and the fact that you can have a fairly old computer, like I have, and still play this without the lag that usually accompanies new releases like this make this a must play. You'll have the issues that I said before but your doing yourself an injustice by not playing this game with your friends. It really is that fun. Expand

I'm 26 and remember playing blizzard games as a kid but it seems now they are a company that is no longer innovative and on the downward spiral. They have taken away any real custom features of the game, removed the cool chat system diablo 2 and done away with in game pvp. Some of the systems were developed with attracting new players to the game but they just went too overbord with it and in the process dumbing down the game. Understanding that diablo 2 was such a awesome, kick ass game it was going to hard to top but they didn't even come close to it and it took them 11 years to produce this pile of trash. After playing through the game once I felt that they just sold me a box of poop because that's what diablo 3 is in fact, a 60 dollar box of feces. Expand

    I shall list my experience so far in order;

The installation was not easy, I had to trawl through the online forums because it continuously failed, trying numerous things suggested until I fixed it which took an hour or so. The fix was from the community NOT from Blizzard :/.

You need a CONSTANT internet connection to play the single player game, there have been times where their servers are overloaded and I could not play / log in. Unacceptable to me from such a big player in the games industry.

The game itself is really mediocre, I usually play on hard difficulty settings for a challenge, but you need to complete the game on normal first before its unlocked. Normal difficulty setting is so unbelievably easy, the gameplay you literally hold one mouse button to run around and kill things, then occasionally hit the right mouse button, Q and numbers 1 - 4. As one previous poster commented "This is Spore all over again" - That too was a game that was unbelievably over-hyped and ended up just a HUGE disappointment to me. Diablo 3 is similar.

To me there are alot of games companies squeezing the life out of excellent titles for the sake of profit. THQ did it with Supreme commander and Activision do it with Call of duty, then there is Tiger woods 137 etc etc. - Diablo gives me the same feeling that me, the consumer and my gaming experience comes not even second to their main priorities of the bottom line and making money. Yes it is important but the balance is tipped too far in the wrong direction for me imo.

    Very disappointed!

The story is dull. Just generic dark fantasy blah that goes in one ear and out the other.
The characters aren't very interesting. Constantly running through dark caves/tunnels/dungeons becomes way too monotonous.

I took a break of 2 days and today I decide to give it another go and got an Error 3007 after 3 minutes! If you're going to put such intrusive DRManti-piracyanti-cheat measures into a game in the future, try to make sure it doesn't screw over half your PAYING CUSTOMERS who have no intention of hackcheatetc!! And yes I absolutely will give the game a poor score due to this because it has thus far ruined the whole experience for me.... all I want to do is have an hour or 2 of single player goodness yet most MMO releases are better than this. And no I'm not going to start rebooting my modem and opening random ports to try and solve this because I have plenty of other multiplayer games and even MMOs that don't require such measures.

All in all, the game delivers what D2 had and more. Sure Diablo 3 can be fun to play and is not so bad technically wise, but it is the way Activision / new Blizzard is treating the fans that is totally unacceptable, especially for that price.
And it's very simple, if enough people rate the product down and don't buy it, you'll wonder how fast the publishers suddenly will make great games again. Or maybe Blizzard / Activision will go down and vanish? So let it be, a company that gives a **** about their customers and the fans should not be so big anyway. New, smaller publishers and indiegames will raise and have already: See Runic Games with Torchlight 2, lot's of the old Diablo developers are in their team now and it has everything Diablo3 is missing and much more. It just doesn't have the giant budget to make it such a hype title.
With every copy of Diablo 3 (or other games with same problems) that is sold, we just tell the publishers their behaviour is the right one and to go on with it, even to make it worse next time. Blizzard is long dead already. R.I.P. Blizzard, R.I.P. Diablo.

For example, Act 2, by Blizzards own admission is supposed to focus on intrigue and deception - and has little of either that I could tell. The entirety of this Act was bland and unmemorable.

All of the alleged "twists" in this game were mind-numbingly lame. There are atleast 3 characters that suffer from memory loss, one of the most cliche and overused plot devices in existence.

Blizzard retconned and filled in alot of Diablo history to come up with the most convoluted and childish story every drempt of. The extremely contrived plot appears to be aimed at an audience legally too young to purchase this game.

There is no offline singleplayer, which makes sure your solo experience is filled with all of the possible connection and lag issues of any multiplayer game. So far these issues have been numerous.

The auction hall(s) and the game's dumbed down experience ensure that good items for your character are far too easy to come by, which is a huge flaw, seeing as Blizzard put a huge focus on gear to replace a completely gutted levelling system.

As a stand alone title, this game is mediocre. Keeping in mind the time in developement, and the legacy of the series, Diablo 3 was a dissappointment, whose "Concentrated Coolness" sounds way to similar to Dragon Age 2's "Awesome Button".

If we jump in a time machine and punch in 12 years and revisit our much younger selves and load up Diablo2 and let us play for an hour then load up Diablo3 and let us play for an hour. After that ask our older selves what we want to play. I think my answer would be Diablo3.

What's actually new here? Simplified skill system that takes away meaningful choice. Obelisks that transport you out of dungeons. No TP scrolls, no need to go to town to identify rares. Cash-based auction house. "Lore" bits that play audio over the top of the game itself (after popping out of the same stupid satchel), making it clear that you aren't role playing or adventuring here, you're controlling an avatar in a video game. Everything new is designed to make the game more accessible to casual gamers and easier to monetize. This is made perfectly clear by the need to have half of the dialogue be a retelling of 1 & 2. In the short term, I'm sure they made decisions that will help the bottom line. In the long term, this is how brands get destroyed. But I guess if you're an executive these days, it's all about getting your quick buck and leaving the consequences to the next guy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Diablo 3 is an average game and overall it is very disappointing. It is very short, the main game can be finished in 20 hours. Relying on repeat runs of the same game with difficulty settings changed feels like a cop out. Graphically the game is not impressive character sprites are small and difficult to see. The game play was very repetitive your abilities may vary but every character type is a killing machine and you essentially mow through similar looking monsters using the same abilities over and over from the beginning to the end with a few bosses in between to interrupt the monotony or boredom? that sets in. The story is average and it even rips off Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. At the end you feel unfulfilled and maybe even ripped off, did I just play an expansion or something? The cut scenes are gorgeous as expected and may be the best part of an average game for Blizzard. If it were any other company this game might deserve a 7 or 8 but by Blizzard standards this game is a 2 or worse. After 12 years is this the best they could do? Overall very disappointing. Expand

server stability 1/10 - random lag spikes can disconnect you from the game seemingly at random, regardless if you are in a boss fight, a huge pack of enemies, or simply in town. This happens regardless of if you are playing solo or with other people, because of the "always on" requirement of internet play. I i must "always be online" to play a single player game, then blizzards servers must "always be available".
auction house 1/10 - most items are posted and respond to input within 5 seconds. stay away from commodities until a patch, i get nothing but "request timed out" errors when attempting to buy or sell gems and other commodities and i have lost several gems while attempting to sell them due to this problem. this major error should have not shipped with a finished game.

Guys, no matter how hyped this game has been, it is not worth it at all. All of the classes are simply broken. Did the developers even test this game past normal? Did anyone actually play inferno? I've played over 100 hours of this game in 1 week and I have realized how much of a waste of life it has been. Without massive changes, this game is absolute trash.

Fantastic game. Beautiful graphics, story, voice acting and gameplay. Less than perfect due to the DRM affecting ongoing gameplay (network lag when I'm playing single player... seriously?).

This is a backwards move in game design. I've played the game for ~40 hours right now, and own pretty much every Blizzard game to come out in the last 15 years besides Wow. That said, MYRIAD features that existed 12 years ago in D2 were removed, some of which are the fundamental features that defined the franchise as unique and innovative (and it sure as hell wasn't the big bad guy). That said, MYRIAD features that existed 12 years ago in D2 were removed, some of which are the fundamental features that defined the franchise as unique and innovative (and it sure as hell wasn't the big bad guy). This is just a list of features that have been REMOVED that I can think of off the top of my head, not even counting the utter failure of most of the new features:

No random levels. No off-line mode, which can lead to INFURIATING gameplay, even in single player (when the servers are up at all). No runes or runewords. No jewels. Fewer gem types. Can't specialize your character's skills (which results in every character being EXACTLY the same minus equipment). Can't add sockets to an existing item (though to be fair this didn't come until the expansion, but even that was more than 10 years ago). There is NO USE WHATSOEVER for normal items any more after lvl 10, if so, why do they even drop at all and clutter up my user experience?

There are a few things they did right, the random Events being the big one, and even if they're largely worthless in gameplay, I like the account-wide leveling system for the stash/jeweler/smith.

However, I must make special mention of the graphics as a "new feature" that is utterly unacceptable. These are not "stylized", they're utter **** and a cop-out, and everyone at Blizzard who worked on them should be ashamed. Also, the ridiculous and embarrassing character design for monsters like The Butcher where he comes screaming in as this hideous giant bloated monster is like something a 13 year-old would have designed.

Final verdict: Blizzard wants to kill this game type of action adventure rpg so they can focus on their favorites Starcraft and Wow, and they're doing it very deliberately. Is it awful? No, but even if the game is very tactile and has a good presence, that impression wears off quickly and the user is left wondering where any actual depth of game play is supposed to be found.

Oh, and don't even get me STARTED on the DRM or auction house.

*** There is no character development - skills just unlock with level and this is it
*** At any given moment you are limited to 6 active skills + health bottle. Boring...
*** Nobody I know picks up non-magic items in the game. So why have them at all?
*** Plot, story, voice acting - all weak
    *** Graphics are sub-par
*** Game is very poorly balanced. Normal difficulty level is a joke.Ex: "Ball lightning" rune with Demon Hunter is pretty much is a "Win the Fight/Game button" (including the bosses). Inferno on the other hand is currently unplayable by melee characters.
*** With each character you MUST start with normal difficutly... WTH???

All in all it seems like casual, single-player oriented WoW but without the large rich and interesting world to explore. You are limited to grinding though the same randomly generated environments at different difficulty levels.

It is still playable (I did spend 17 hours to beat it with DH char) but after 12 year wait for a company like Blizzard I'd call it a failure. It seems that they just wanted to supplement dwindling WoW revenue by doing a half-assed revivial of old and popular franchise.... Very disappointing...

Although I've found this game extremely addicting, I can't give it higher than an 7, and for a few reasons.

    1. I do not like the auction house system to begin with, but making a real money one is even worse. I think it breaks the game for people who really play it a lot. 2. There is no skill tree anymore where you can decide where to place your skill points as you level up. Automatically

    1. I do not like the auction house system to begin with, but making a real money one is even worse. I think it breaks the game for people who really play it a lot.

    2. There is no skill tree anymore where you can decide where to place your skill points as you level up. Automatically getting every skill is frustrating if you want to PVP or spec in a certain way and unless getting to level 60 is impossibly hard and therefore creates a new category of super players (I'm only level 22 at the moment), everyone is exactly the same as everyone else.

    3. I'm not going to hate on the graphics, but they aren't as good as they could have been. To me they are good enough though. I'm an old school gamer and graphics don't make a game, gameplay makes a game.

However, I do happen to like the single player setup. I'm not sure why everyone hates on it, but the ability to play by myself as long as I want and then let people jump in while using the same character is nice. I'll always have my stuff and characters in the same spot. If you want to play single player, then just play by yourself. PROBLEM FIXED.

This is a very well made game. It is responsive, looks good, plays well together, and mostly intelligent AI. The game is just fun to play. It mixes things up just enough to make you want to play again. Just for being a fun title it gets good marks as that is the primary focus of a game....being fun.

The graphics are well made as well. They are high enough to look good for the perspective you are playing as well as keeping the game available to a variety of machines. PC gamers claim that they have better graphics capability and this is true. The problem is the disparity in systems. An Xbox is an Xbox. There are very few differences except in hard drive space. They are made (some with different hardware) to play at a specified efficiency and so the developer can target that making the game as efficient as possible. PCs are a different bag and you have to tone things down to get a larger market share. It's just the way it is and will be for the foreseeable future.

This is a game that has it all. There are a few annoyances like the music, while well done, is not really something that gets your blood pumping to fight demons when a huge battle is going on. The graphics are fine. The fun is high. The controls are responsive and well done. The skill tree is fine as well. Keep giving those 0s for no reason. It's like stabbing your friend in the chest for giving you something enjoyable. See if you get something again.

The mob fights can get really heavy and frantic at times. I enjoy the robust auction house. Upgraded gear is available very cheaply so you can control the level of difficulty (get yellow rare gear to your level if you want to make it easier). This game has massive replay value - you're likely going to put in 50 hours just to clear the first two levels of difficulty with one character. I'm surprised that the game feels so different running through the storyline again on the next difficulty level. Mob aren't just a little more difficult overall, they also can come with new abilities that force you to react differently. The last part helps reduce the potential for monotony. I fing the game slightly more difficult when grouping but of course it's more fun to play with others. You can drop in and out of doing things with friends easily and painlessly - even if you're only doing co-op for 5 mins with a friend there's no harm done by leaving (difficulty adjusts automatically based on party size). Other than the first day, I have had no issues logging on. Giving the game a 0 rating for those problems is short-sighted. THIS IS A VERY GOOD GAME. Period. Regarding on-line access for a single-player game, the downside is well documented (read the zero ratings). The upside for me is that I can play on multiple computers easily (which I do). Regardless, not a reason to avoid purchase because the value for $60 is tremendous. PVP has been delayed which I don't have a problem with - my hands are full working on progressing through the difficulty which will take me a while. When PVP arrives, it will feel like a free expansion pack. There aren't many games worth $60, but DB3 is epic fun! I dinged them to a 9 for the initial troubles with servers because I hold Blizzard to a higher standard than others. The game itself is 10/10. Expand

    DRM/online requirement:
I can understand that this upsets single players, but this was communicated long before the game launched, so you knew what was coming. For me, the long term motivation in Diablo 2 always came from being online, so in the end it makes no difference. The launch went as any reasonable person might expect. Within a week from launch everything seems very stable, so overall a good job. The graphics etc: Looks nice, maybe it could be a bit less resource hungry since the graphics are not exactly high end. More importantly, it runs natively on OSX! I would say that this game is perfect and just like I expected from Blizzard.

    Pros:
+Mechanics polished to a mirror shine
+ Loot hunting is fun as ever
    +Varied and interesting classes
    +Co-op is great
+An improved skill system that does away with archaic tree skill systems
+4 Different difficulties, 5 different classes, PvP teams with a starcraft-like progression system... you will be playing this game for a long time
+Graphics that look modern, but still keep that Diablo guts'n'gore "charm"

    Cons:
    -Story lacking slightly
-Servers with high latency on release, made game unplayable to many people
-Flawed loot system with legendary's being, most of the time, weaker than some blues
-Melee classes slightly unbalanced in higher difficulty
-Lack of a chat system, so community seems empty
    -PvP not available at launch
-Always online DRM with no optional offline mode

To many, Diablo 3 is a series close to many peoples hearts. Since its introduction in the 90's, and subsequent refinement 4 years later, the game became a legend, but it has been MIA for more than a decade. With Diablo 3's announcement, the masses have been foaming at the mouth, waiting in anticipation for its release, but now that its out, does it hold up to a decade worth of hyping?
In short, yes. Aside from some minor nitpicks, Diablo 3 improves upon Diablo 2 in almost every way.

The combat in Diablo 3 is the samestandard hack'n'slash isometric loot fest that the previous two were, but polished to a mirror shine. The production value shows that an immense amount of work has been put into it. The looting is addictive, as it should be, and getting that new item is still as thrilling as ever. The classes (Demon Hunter, Barbarian, Witch Doctor, Wizard, Monk) are incredibly varied, with a plethora of skills to use, and endless combinations to use, with several builds that are viable. Which segways into the next point.

The skill system is a massive improvement, not just over Diablo 2, but the whole franchise as a whole. Skill trees force a kind of pseudo-choice like system that in reality, forces you into cookie cutter builds, with only half the skills being viable. Runes only further diversify the system by modifying skills. For example, Bola Shot shoots a bola that wraps around the enemies head, then explodes, dealing splash damage. A rune called acid strike changes the skill into 3 bolas that deal acid damage. So there are several different ways you could build your character.

To many, this topic is very polarizing... the graphics. The graphics in this game are almost painting like in their presentation, and look very polished and genuinely unsettling in some situations. A desert with skeletons littering the landscape, a hell-like torture dungeon with the corpses of the victims still in their respected torture devices, it's all very well composed. I do have some minor nitpicks with the game though. The launch was rockier than the sheer side of a cliff, with error 3007 and disconnects plaguing the first several hours. Even now, the servers are high in latency, causing serious lag in situations with many enemies. Then the story... it isn't exactly high class literature, with most of the quest being "X magical artifact is causing Y disturbance, and we need to Z to obtain it" But, it works, and most people aren't buying the game for the story. The loot system also needs some reworking, as many times, legendary are lesser than their blue counterparts, and that needs to end. The feeling when you get a legendary should be that this item is incredibly rare and valuable, not just another item, doomed to a merchant's inventory. Melee classes need to be reworked as well, most importantly the barbarian. He needs some extra survivability in the higher difficulties to make him innately tanky. Maybe an extra 25% vitality bonus, or something along the lines of that.

Then the lack of a chat system (a'la starcraft 2) is missing, which makes the community seem very empty, but the starcraft 2 chat system wasn't available at launch either, so there will most likely be one implemented in the future.

Then the lack of the PvP system at launch, I know this isn't an integral part of the Diablo 3 experience, but it could be a great way to extend your play time.

Overall, Diablo 3 is a great game that doesn't deserve half of the flak it gets in the forums and on metacritic, with a few minor nitpicks that don't detract from the shine of this true gem. But then again, this is just my personal opinion, so let yourself formulate your own.

It's an extremely stripped down and dumbed down version of Diablo 2. I suspect the game was purposely made the way it is so they could make money off the real money auction house. The fact that you are required to be online on their servers 100% of the time was just a terrible idea. It's very painful to see a series I loved so much to be ruined by moments of server lag, outages and mid-game disconnects. It really ruins the story aspect of the game when you're fighting Diablo for the first time and just before you kill him you get disconnected from the server. People were giving advice and begging for the better part of a year on the beta forums for small changes to be made and were completely ignored. The game was actually more complex back then and they ended up stripping it down to make it easier to play to the general audience. Only very small amounts of the game are randomized now. Most outdoor areas and dungeons are 95% similar every time you go through them.

The gear is just terribly done. Played through the game till act 3 of hell before I found a single unique (still no set items) and I was happy that it was a fist weapon for my monk. It was junk and I sold it at auction for cheap. Rare items drop very frequently and often are much better than the best set or unique items.

The boss monsters are jokes. Really. With a decent build and life steal as a monk you can stand and just punch Diablo in hell mode and you will rarely see your health dip below 80%. Meanwhile the elite mobs in act 1 will tear you apart before you can attack them.

I haven't played enough to really say anything about the balance issues in inferno or with other classes, so I'm not going to comment on that.

All being said, the game IS fun. $60 fun? Not really. As a successor to Diablo 2? Mediocre at best. Ignoring how much 'effort' they put into the whole game hub with the auction house, the game feels like a $20 indie game you'd find on Steam that you'd seriously consider buying but then would decide to wait until it was on sale for at least 33% off.

Ok, now that I could finally play a few dozen hours, it's time to write a real review. :)
Please keep in mind that I played the 5 classes, although none of them is lvl60, so this is a work-in-progress. Still I have a nice idea of the game now. For those who dont like big text, here's the thing to remember: DIABLO 3 IS FAR FROM EXCEPTIONAL, AND SUFFER SERIOUS SHORTCOMINGS,

For those who dont like big text, here's the thing to remember: DIABLO 3 IS FAR FROM EXCEPTIONAL, AND SUFFER SERIOUS SHORTCOMINGS, STILL IT'S A FUN GAME ESPECIALLY WITH FRIENDS.
+ each class has its own role and a few skills/equipment that make them distinctive.
    + aesthetics of the game.
+ works on any decent computer.
+ not just plain mouse-click bashing.
+ new skills system avoids losing hundred hours building a new character to test new strategy, allows to adapt skills depending on the team (and not the contrary).
    - the "hundreds skills per classe" is crap: at least half of them is useless.
    - permanent internet connection is still the WORST **** DRM EVER! Especially with Blizzard being so stupid: not anticipating Day one, updating servers on Sunday afternoon -I mean, Sunday freaking AFTERNOON!!!
    - several ergonomy flaws.
    - loot system broken by design, blatantly oriented to make people trade items at auction house.
    - difficulty curve stupidly steep. You go straight from utterly boring, 0-danger monster massacre to hard survival where you don't even count your lives anymore (much more interesting though, the "normal difficulty" should have been dropped).

    OTHER COMMENTS
Apart from connection problem, the two major flaw I see are:
    1) artificial variety of skills: In spite of so many skills on paper, only a handful will be actually useful. And, unless you play solo on higher difficulties (with monsters having immunities/special powers), you'll never have to change your set skill to win your game. In fact, you're encouraged to play like this, since you accumulate a hidden bonus of magic find which resets when you change active skills. Duh.
    2) loot system purposely broken to make you use Auction House: normal objects only sell a few golds (whatever their quality), magic items not much better, you rarely get an item for your class, stash is insanely expensive and limited. And still, monsters drop stuff by the hundreds, making you lose so much time checking items to pick up the good ones. 3) crafting system useless: the odds of making good items are not much better than your chances to find ones, you have no control whatsoever on generated magic properties, the number of times you can craft is limited, the investment in money is HUGE. Good idea, bad implementation.

    FIRST FEEDBACK
This is sad. I'd like to write a detailed review on this game, and give it a note that would reflect the actual fun potential. Unfortunately, I cannot bypass this outstanding behaviour from Blizzard. They are a VERY BIG editor, so it's not a money problem. They published several massively online multiplayer games already (Diablo 2, WoW, Starcraft 2), so it's not an experience problem. They made people play beta for many months, and made an extensive stress-test one month before actual planned release date; so it's not a preparation problem. BLIZZARD JUST PLAINLY DECIDED TO THROW AWAY USABILITY TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS. So, here are dozen thousand people that pre-ordered or bought on day 0, for a hefty amount of dollars, and they can't even play. And, obviously, general user licence prevent them from having a legal cause for bringing Blizzard into court. I think I've found the problem here. Blizzard doesn't give a **** about his community/fans/users/clients. Only possible retaliation then is: DON'T BUY THIS GAME (yet)!!! ... SERIOUSLY.

There is early game and end game, but nothing in between. You start off enjoying the experience and story, then you proceed to nightmare and hell difficulty to grind levels and finally when you're 60 you either try to complete inferno difficulty or you grind elite/champion monsters to get loot buffs that you use to take down bosses and get better than average loot.

As stated, there's no midgame, there's nothing to do but grind your character to level 60 and replay all the things you beat on normal, which had no challenge. The "good" loot is very far in between and there is no satisfaction in taking down bosses until you're level 60, since they drop nothing of value. The skill system is very varied and I'd say most abilities are competently balanced, but as always there are specific combos that just work best and if you're going to have that instead of changing between abilities to adapt to situations, then you might as well have kept the old skill system, assigning points. The greatest challenge in Diablo has always been randomly overpowered champions/elites and never the bosses and D3 keeps this approach, giving ridiculously overtuned special powers that can have devastating effects depending on what you play. The thing is that you can't outplay these monsters if they have a certain combos of abilities and at present they too hard a challenge at higher difficulties. While bosses are still very difficult at higher difficulties, they are manageable and you will never lose because because of unfair ability combos.

The game is overpriced, the servers are unstable and currently make you unable to have a chance at playing hardcore, since you are likely to die from lag even in a singleplayer game. You cannot kick friends or block friends from joining your game, which has been a problem since people will often join your games randomly, even though you only know them from a different game or want to play by yourself.

If Diablo 3 and Diablo 2 came out at the same time, and graphics were not in question, then Diablo 2 would be the far superior game. This isn't nostalgia talking, this is easy to compare since Path of Exile just had an open beta and heavily relies on the old mechanics and playstyle. People have been saying that Torchlight 2 wouldn't have a chance because of Diablo, but Blizzard screwed this one up royally. They have gone far too mainstream this time and their mass catering has substantially hurt their own design and gameplay.

I am disgusted at the "professional" reviews that have given the game so high a score without touching the important factors. I suspect, however, that it is a fine console game and would be fit for that target audience, it should just have been named something else.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
