The gameplay is decent, but the bugs, glitches and bad design make this game a flop. The installer didn't work - I had to play around for 8 hours installing the game - I still can't figure out how a company can sink this much time into a game and have the installer fail to work for a good portion of players.

The installer didn't work - I had to play around for 8 hours installing the game - I still can't figure out how a company can sink this much time into a game and have the installer fail to work for a good portion of players.

The auction house has a bad habit of dropping transactions, I can't tell if it is lag or what, but I know that I have 50k in gold lost in space somewhere. I also have another 30k that I can see.. but can't access. Always online single player - has been beaten to death... but it does suck to be disconnected and have to search for a boss again since each map is randomly generated.

There is also very little customization of your character since there are no stats. The skills you can use are basically picked for you, you just decide when you want to use them on your action bar. One of the design flaws came with the addition of the Auction house, blizzard reduced the drop rates of unique items... which is ok, except that finding unique items every now and then is what made Diablo 2 fun. Not finding any unique or sets after running through normal, nightmare, and hell doesn't reward your efforts. Instead you are forced to buy what other people have found - which still gives you the same result, but you don't get the slot machine like satisfaction offered in previous diablo installments.

The next design flaw, from what I have read, is that unique items are often far surpassed by lesser quality items which can be found more commonly. This makes the very rare 'winnings' seem like less of a jackpot - since that amazing unique item is actually worse than the item you have already. This is based on what I have read, not experience... I still have not found a unique item or really looked into buying one on the AH since most are priced out of my reach. The gameplay is fun though, which is nice... but If you have a nice piece of software that can't be installed, crashes constantly and is riddled with problems, it is bad software. If this game were a car, I believe most people - despite how cool of a car it is - would return it under the Lemon Law. It just doesn't work.

Loot variety is terrible and feels at the most of only half way completed. I have played free IPAD games have better loot variety than this one right now.

For the skill system it feels like no illegitimate RPG based skill system to me, only a "select your auto attack splash", In addition there is no option to specialize your character to any builds that you want. I have enjoyed the story

I have enjoyed the story for the most part, but it can be a little better.

Replay-ability contains no story alterations for higher difficulties, the feeling of being forced into replaying the "story" portion of the game for harder difficulties, harder difficulties have no depth in order to make it challenging, overall no fun whatsoever.

The game is really strait forward with very few side quest. The XP rewards for killing big bosses has been nerfed although the rewards from bosses is still the same. At low-mid levels, the player is allowed to experiment on what abilities or actions to optimize his/her play style, but at high levels you end up only playing a "kite for your life" or "farm chest for gear" play style which is totally boring as "inferno". If you are like the casual player and don't have the patience for farming gear through boring gear grinding, then this game is not for you. Expand

After it came out I decided to try out the trial version by purchasing a guest pass on Ebay. After trying it out I decided to buy it immediately. They have outdone themselves with attention to detail, an endless array of monsters, animations, artwork, and an overall superior product to anything that has come out in many years. Not sure what all the complaints are about.. the game retains the intense atmosphere, writing and superb voice acting of its predecessors and creates a visually stunning experience which is also superb in the performance department. My computer is somewhat last generation and it runs on max settings at a steady 60 fps and only slows down when you are surrounded by an obscene amount of enemies on screen.. all with an amazing array of effects. Its truly a masterpiece. Expand

First off, if you're a PC gamer, you click all the time to play your games, so argument in that realm is void. Secondly, if you came into Diablo, knowing the other two games before this one thinking that for some reason they would stray away from that trademark game play, even after they released tons of game play footage and a beta beforehand, then you deserve to have wasted your money. As a game, the game fits the series well, and is the most polished of them all. I can understand how there isn't as much of a uniqueness to the characters as there was in Diablo II. They limited the skill point feature of the hero, so there is to be no more distributing your skills as you see fit. They are done automatically. As for abilities, you are given certain abilities and can choose one between a few on any given tree. When it comes to my opinion, I like both changes to the skills and abilities, as I know for the first time I played Diablo II, I built my character well to my knowledge, then came to realize in the harder difficulties, that my character could not hold his own because of what I built. I believe this relived a lot of pain that could come in late difficulty experiences - as your abilities are still there, but can be switched depending on the situation you encounter. Now touching on the actual systematic properties of the game. I am largely referring to the online only setup they have. Granted, as a company, I can understand why they decided to do this. Nonetheless as a consumer, this is a cruel annoyance. I can't express the frustration I get during my so-called "single player" game where I get hit by a sudden lag spike that is no fault of my own. It seems Blizzard is still polishing their networked setups of Diablo III, and it's a shame that feature wasn't polished like the rest of the game. Seems to me, they tend to drop the ball in that regard. Despite this, the game itself is fantastic, while technically speaking the game lacks stability. Expand

But why make a user playing in single-player mode suffer through server downtimes and non-playability when they have don't have internet or your ISP has problems. When I buy a game I expect to own it. But in today's game business thinking, you're paying for the privilege to play when the owner allows it. If the owner goes away, is hacked, or has technical problems, then you're SOL on playing this game. After reading other's reviews, some are saying we shouldn't judge a game based on its DRM. Reviews like those make me think they're being written by the game's developers or publishers. To those folks I say you're ridiculous. When a ridiculous DRM prevents you from playing an expensive game, then it should indeed be considered when reviewing it.

As for me, I'll continue playing since I bought the game and want some amount of enjoyment from it. But I'll also look for a cracked EXE or similar thing that shuts off the DRM so I can play without a net connection. It's my right to have the ability to play the game when I want - with or without a net connection.

As for story, repetitiveness, item farming, I see no difference with Diablo 2. I think a lot of us have a different impression of Diablo 2 because we were younger. Today, I would rush through D2 in a day and farm items over and over, same deal here. RMA AH is not great, but consider 1. D2 probably had the largest illegit item selling market of any game ever made and 2. Another failure of the auction house system is that because there are no gold dumps in game (after professions are maxed out), inflation is expected to rise at a ridiculous rate since people have nothing to spend their money on. Next, because people are more inclined to make real money instead of virtual gold, the best items are on the real money auction house, ruining the game for players wishing not to spend their real money on virtual items. And thats just the start, Bugs galore, even though the graphics are medicore it slows down the most powerfal machines, Online public gameplay is full of bugs and security holes where hackers can steal your account, been hacked already.

The Auction house barely works and is full of bugs, you'll search for items and have random items or no items show up based on your filters, sometimes when you sell items you never get the gold, also the real money system just ruins the value of items and the economy, because money is cheap super powerful items are easy to acquire just ruining the difficulty curve, the game is horrendously easy and not a challenge.

This game is only partly finished, they never included the pvp system, and when you get to the last Act in the game it is plainly horribly obvious from the level design, graphics, monsters, storyline, even items where just missed mashed together at the last moment. I swear the last part of the game is so horrible you find it hard to finish, let me iterate again it so plainly and horribly obvious at the low level or horrible quality of work at the final act that this game is not finished.

Do not buy this until its $30 because thats what your paying for a half a game full of bugs and hackers.

World of Warcraft has required an internet connection since 2004, and if your computer isn't good enough to play it, that's not really Blizzard's fault. I do a LOT of sympathy for people who simply can't get good enough internet service to play, but again, not Blizzard's fault, and if you were just looking to get a pirated copy, well, this game is actually worth the money, where so many others are not. The philosophy that Jay used to "Turning people hardcore" by making a game impossible to play later stages without dipping money into the auction house is no way to please customers. It feels forced, necessary and dumb. If you want to make people "hardcore gamers", make a game addictive and fun instead of this miserable pile of **** which guarantees death, disappointment and endless grinding accompanied by an extremely lacking service lever after level. As far as the appeal go, graphics are extremely outdated and just like Wow, no matter how much you polish them, they will still look old along with a REPETITIVE story accompanying REPETITIVE game-play with a REPETITIVE set of maps that has no true "randomization" involved besides a small pool of maps and don't get me started on the music. Bye bye Matt. What's blizzard's first thought? FILL EVERYTHING WITH AS MUCH ORCHESTRA AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE BECAUSE THAT'S ALWAYS A GOOD MOVE. 1. Gameplay: Way better than Diablo II. Streamlined stats + skill system = WIN! You actually get to try out every combinations of skills without dumping time in re-rolling characters! You get variety! Diablo II require you to search web forum for optimal cookie cutter builds; Diablo III require you to play every skills to try them out because you can't resist.

    2. Graphic: Looks great. Not sure why people are complaining. Initially I wanted the WoW style over-shoulder view... I stopped complaining after about 3 hours because I there's just too many mobs for that kind of view to work. As a bonus point, this game run smooth on my 2011 MBP with intel3000hd! 3. Story: Yes it's a very low-IQ story... but the whole point is the action so I don't mind. 4. Multiplay: AMAZING. Do this. After your first single run to hear the story, don't ever play single! PS. Buy it now. Worth the $60.

I thought they dumbed down WoW to make it appeal to a younger less experienced more casual crowd so that they could make Diablo III more appealing to older gamers. They didn't. Everything going wrong with WOW has been duplicated in this fiasco. Now both franchises suck. I've never seen a company waste so much consumer loyalty. They're destroying their brand day in and day out. Creativity is a valuable commodity and apparently Blizzard doesn't have it anymore. This game feels like it was made in a boardroom. Diablo 2 perfected this formula, and i found myself on every single day, every hour i could get just to do another "Diablo run". Diablo 3 has improved on EVERYTHING, destructible environments, more varieties of monsters, achievements, more classes, etc. But one thing fell short.... The atmosphere. In Blizzards previous games, i this overwhelming fear of death always hung above my head like a cloud. The sounds, the looks, the monsters, the more "gothic" like atmosphere. In Diablo 3 the creepiest thing was the templars, but that was it. I was more afraid of a monster in act one, than i was with diablo himself. I am sure, blizzard will release expansion sets to this game, and i hope they concentrate more on the atmosphere and variety of drops and making "runs" relevant again with the new "Marketplace". The biggest problem are the skills. Not having skill points and the limitation of the skills you put on your bar creates too many limitations. With all classes I find myself constantly wanting to swap out skills for different situations and it's not easy/fun/fast to do it. Why can't you have multiple configured preset skill bars? Why are there skills with long cool downs that I can't swap out until they finish (I understand why but, GOD it is really annoying sometimes).

It feels like you have to keep "working around" the damn skill system.

Killing groups of monsters and getting loot is pretty good. graphics, animation is good. The story and cinematic cut scenes are good.

The server play is fairly bad. There's a lot of latency even in single player, but I have found with groups it gets even worse. Lots of "rubber banding" stunting, freezing, and sometimes that results in death and it's very aggravating. I just couldn't imaging playing hardcore with the game in this state.

Overall, I'm glad Diablo was released and that I got to finish it. Improved graphics, story, cutscenes, are great. The skill system is unsatisfying, the loot system doesn't feel as exciting as diablo 2, the crafting system is kind of boring, purchasing storage and leveling your crafters is just a big gold sync to keep gold important and feels more like a chore than an exciting achievement. And the achievements system is similar to what you find in other blizzard games and brings no innovations there. Custom banners are nice.

7/10 - Good but with some frustrations and disappointments.

One cool feature is that anybody who is accompanying you in battle like a follower have interesting things to say and talk to your character, making them feel alive and believable. Not just mindlessly following you around. One of the worst parts of the game is constantly having to be connected to the internet to play the game. It is ridiculous that i need to online to play a single player game! What if i go on a trip and i want to take my laptop and play on the way or something? To me, Diablo 3 looks and feels like what I would expect a console version of Diablo to be like. It's nothing like the previous versions were. Anyone that buys this game thinking they are going to be able to experiment with character customization has just wasted $60.00. In the end, we all have the same skills and the only thing separating us is the items we are carrying. If you are a Monk and your buddy is a Monk, you are exactly the same.

In previous versions of Diablo I spent countless hours playing characters like the Amazon or Barbarian developing each of their skill trees completely different. You simply can't do that in this game.

I have also seen mention of how this is supposed to be a Loot based game. Well let me tell you, I am about 1/2 way thru nightmare and I have never played a loot based game that generates so much completely worthless junk. In the old Diablo's at least non-magical items were worth a little bit, lugging those items back to town was worth the effort. I don't know why they even included non-magical items, they are a total waste.

Everything is on a timer (including my patience)! Seriously! What is wrong with guzzling potions to avoid death? I have 50 health potions and have to run away from a tough fight to re-charge my healing timer?? If I have the spirit and the potions then let me spend them how I see fit. Really Blizzard it's not a complicated concept, you did it in the past.

I give this game a 4. It's not a total waste of money and there is some entertainment value in H&S with some friends but if you enjoy a feature rich character customizeable experience you won't find it after you install Diablo 3. After about 10 hours of game play you will kill Diablo for the first time and start getting bored of using the same 3 skills over and over and over. The whole hype about the online market thing is totally lost on me as well. I won't be playing this game long enough to care to even visit this store and why would I spend real dollars on items when the character customization is so locked into a single path.

Sorry Blizzard, but this game is all hype and just doesn't deliver. This could have been so much better if you stuck with the format you had in the previous versions.

No consistent with the original storyline, even character classes are out of place with the franchise. The paladin represented the antagonism needed in the diablo world, as the necromancer was the opposite. That leaves the monk and the witch doctor somewhat lost in between, with no clear roles whatsoever in the game, at leas if we consider Diablo 2 to be our starting point. The skill tree, if it can be called a tree at all, its nothing more than an illusion, you just unlock abilities, that in the end, are nothing more than extentions of your weapon damage, yes, its true believe it or not, the damage the sorcerer deals is a direct effect of the weapon you are actually wielding, and your powers deal a percentage of your weapons damage, so idiotic is this system, that ray of frost (the first ray you get) deals 200 something percent of your weapon damage, while disintegrate (the last ray you get) deals 178 ish percent damage.........less damage!!! being the last ray!!. Graphics: no idea at all of what they wanted, in art, teachers usually tell you "keep a simple design in mind, and work it out". Diablo 2 was this, a simple catacomb or cathedral design was all you needed, work on the details (blood on the floor, some torture items) and you get a pretty credible and scary setting, in diablo 3 its like they just threw everything they could think of in a single room, fire sprouting from the floor, colorful enemies spawned from some anime or mu online setting, and pastel tones that are totaly out of place with the original idea, give us back the plain and simple designs of diablo 2, a really simple design, which when developed in the right direction, is much more effective than a modern graphics engine, i hope i get my point. Items: item randomizer, good, although i miss the runes and i also miss the items which gave +1/2/3 to certain skills, i dont like the armor and weapon design, again, wowish and childish looking, tower shield is a shield made form two smaller pieces glued together in the middle, leaving a space between them, what kind of shield leaves a space by which arrows can pass or swords can cut you open.......more senseless use of aesthetics, when the functionality of the item should dictate the form, that makes it more credible, again, simple ideas, and then work them out, why not a simple shield with intrincate logos and faces? instead of a shield which has no functionality as a shield?. Monsters: horrible design, once again, keep it simple blizzard, overdressed knights and angels, this is diablo not world of warcraft, shinning armors and clothes doesnt help building up the atmosphere, again anime style, childish kind of game, not a single enemy had the grottesque look of..........lets use the word again.....the grotesques of diablo 2...those who vomited little spawns in 4th act. Oh and before i forget...........Diablo...........slim and alien like boss, walks like a woman in sports illustrated, moving its tail in a kinda sensual way. Overall, instead of keeping the good stuff from diablo2 and getting out the cons......the took away some great stuff (old classes for example and skill trees) and added some really bad stuff (graphic design and over simplicity). I dished out my money to blizzard, played the open beta, and thought it was average. Not too bad, worth playing if my friends wanted to play it. My friends were disappointed in the removal of customization, but decided not to judge the game based on half of act 1 that was available in the beta, so we bought the game, and played. For the purposes of this review, I will completely ignore the inconsistent server issue, as that is poor management and not poor game design. However, I have found myself unable to play past seven hours of Diablo 3, for the following reasons: 1. Immersion gets a score of 1/3. Journals are almost always ignored, and when you read them, they don't tell you anything to advance the plot. They are more like reading snippets of a bad fanfic than anything actually having to do with the game. The characters have absolutely no depth to them. All characters in the game are one sided and repetitive, nothing to make me think that they are any more than polygons on a screen. Progression: Progression is backwards. I see numbers getting higher, but enemies always die the same way, attack the same way, appear the same way. It feels like the same battle with different skins. Progression gets 0/3 points. Playability: It is playable, but barely. The game lags on my computer on the lowest graphics possible in singleplayer, and I can run skyrim, team fortress 2, with little to no lag. My friends have similar issues, in that it even lags in singleplayer. However, the quality of the graphics at higher levels is good. The voice acting is decent, and the cinematics are entertaining. Playability gets 1/2. Personal score: I cannot say I hate the game, but I don't really like it. I feel it isn't worth the money I spend on it and would take a refund if offered in a snap. There is one thing, though. They put a lot of work into the small things in this game, and I appreciate that. Easter eggs with references to other things (no spoilers now,) are always appreciated in my book and deserve one point for recognition. 1/2 Expand

My review pretty much stays the same, brilliant game, challenging on higher difficulties, especially with more players, fatal flaw being gear oriented instead of skill oriented despite the fact the game really still makes you use your brain one way or the other. You cannot just wow rambo rush into a group of enemies on hell or inferno, even if you have good gear you will get destroyed.

Graphics are slightly outdated but the gameplay is smooth and fluid, while it isnt one hundred percent like diablo 2 I can say it has entertained me when diablo 2 became stale after six years, and it entertained me for the first week for around 86 hours, if it were not for a blizzard management technicality and flawed system it would have probably entertained me for more.

The first one is easy to understand, the second one you gotta really look at it from a pov of someone who has received threats in blizzard products with your real name attached...

The first issue is, due to the rl auction house, the amount of accounts getting hacked is extremely high, and they can only do a total of 2 character rollbacks... per account... This is a massive issue since the rl auction house being in game really makes it easier for real money traders (rmts) to expedite the process allowing them greater ease to hack into an account. On top of this there is, apparently, a security leak on blizzards side, as well.

This is a customer service related issue, a technicality really but it results in a permanently locked account along with other management issues made by blizzard. I never give my real name out to people, I always use a pen name. Problem is, Back in the wow glory days of vanilla when the game was good I received death threats from some of the players in the game, some of which were able to look my name up and send some mail via the postal system with death threats as well...

Well when your account gets hacked you gotta submit a photocopy of your driver license, birth certificate (if a minor) etc, cant just give them the last 4 digits of the credit card used to purchase the item. But whatever, I had no trojans, no viruses, no worms, and no spyware/adware on my computer, checked with 3 different virus scanners. On top of this I never entered my information into the login page unless I logged into the diablo 3 site, itself, making sure I manually type the address bar. My account is now in limbo since due to previous death threats I received on a previous account I didn't want people to know my real name, technicality got my account permanently locked and unable to restore it. The game probably deserves a 7.5 or an 8, but the always-online requirement warrants a slightly lower score, especially when lag affects the single player experience (which is common in Australia with its draconian telecommunications infrastructure).

Still, if you enjoy RPGs and particularly ARPGs, you'll find months and months of gameplay here. When I'm not playing it, I'm wishing I was.

When the developers saw that people could play so well that they didn't need fantastic gear to take down end game bosses they nerfed those characters until they were nonviable for players at any skill level unless they had ridiculous gear. Lag is ridiculously bad, so bad you think there is something wrong with your computer, but its not you, its them. Security at the moment is also an issue and characters who don't purchase an 'authenticator' from Blizzards online store are easy victims to the simplest of malware programs (that somehow evade modern antivirus tools) that are eager to strip your character naked of gear and gold. In its current state, this game is unplayable, in 6 months maybe they will have things up and running... Expand

Is it a good game? Yes. Is it good enough to cost three times as much as Torchlight -- the most recent previous competitor among this particular type of action RPG -- and three times as much as the soon-to-be-released Torchlight II? No.

    Pros:
-Fun to hack and slash and tear up large groups of enemies (What you expect from Diablo)
-Achievements add a small but fun element to the game.
-Gameplay is smooth and animations such as exploding enemies is enjoyable
-Conversations and side stories are interesting and a change of pace the first couple playthroughs

Good and bad at same time:
-The leveling system is straight forward and does not require hours of grinding to reach the level cap.
-No skill trees and stat point distribution allows you to focus on loot and killing but does not make your character feel unique. It gives you the flexibilty to try new builds and change your skills to work best with whatever group you play with at any given time
-Grouping with friends and creating game is quick but doesn't allow you to make games people can look for or go back to previous difficulties and is centered solely on what quest you select which is restricted by level.
-Requires an online connection at all times. This might be frustrating for those that only want to play single player but If it reduces hacking and duping that plagued previous Diablo games then it is welcome. Due to the very bad latency though I have already heard claims that it is possible to duplicate items.

    Cons:
-Itemization is horrendous. After hour upon hours I have yet to see any legendary or set items drop but I already have blue items with better stats and more damage than the best legendary items. Legendaries should be above average rare items with rare items having the potential to be better than legandaries with near perfect stat rolls. Blue items drop way too easy and it is very discouraging to have essentially no goal in terms of items except for finding another blue or yellow item with more of you main stat and more vitality. Many Diablo 2 players can recite nearly all of their pieces of gear by name and I don't see how that will become the case in this game.
-The story was okay but the ending seemed very rushed and short.
-When grouping you are unable to use your companions and companion customization/gearing provides little to no benefit except when soloing.

    TLDR;

Very fun game but missing the best things that have made Diablo 2 such a huge long lasting sucess. Hopefully they are listening and will fix these things with an update or expansion similarly to what LOD did for Diablo 2.

No new mechanics in higher difficulties. Monsters don't get new spells or attacks (with the exception of elites and their affixes).

Elite monster affixes are boring with most of them being aoe area control spells that force you to run away.

Game is short with linear maps that have minuscule randomisation and waypoints are given to you automatically in certain points of the story. Exploration becomes pointless and unrewarding.

Long cool down timers ruin the pace of the game.

Many skills and skill runes are useless and are not viable in the endgame.

Endgame forces you to go certain builds just to survive, killing build diversity.

Gold sinks are pointless and expensive. (Jeweller and Blacksmith)

Disappearing text in chat box is annoying.

Private messaging is clunky and slow, further ruining the pace of the game.

Script is cheesy and poorly written.

I've never been a fan of Diablo, but decided to give it a shot and I was pleasntly pleased. It has many good features and can keep one amused for hours on end. The story I found somewhat lacks, maybe due to the fact I didn't play previous diablo's but the gameplay more than makes up for that.

I encountered many of the game breaking glitches as others have mentioned, some were fixed, but rushed development and releasing an unfinished game has to have some consequence against the final score.

A solid 8, hopefully with patches the game can climb into a 9, I consider anybody giving this game a 10 a "fanboy" there are issues that can't be overlooked, it is far from perfect. I wonder how much Blizzard pays the gaming companies to score so many 10's when fans playing the game looks seriously upset.

I am not commenting on any server-related issue as it is irrelevant to the gameplay itself. Graphics do not determine how good a game is, only how modern it is. Graphics do not determine how good a game is, only how modern it is. These are the main issues with the game. Your weapon-damage is increased by 1% for each point in your primary stat (E.g. Strength for Barbarians, Dexterity for Monks and Demon Hunters and Intelligence for Witch Doctor and Wizard). This makes this the most treasured stat in a strong character, and survivability being secondary. Occasionally, you find randomly created items with a set number of random attributes, all of these are worthless unless they have a massive amount of your primary stat, or directly increased weapon-damage. Finding optimal items are hard, I like that (+1), but, finding legendary items that have been specifically designed for your character, level and playing style is much harder and when you finally do, that weapon is bound to end up on the 'Auction House' as there are always randomly created items that have better properties. How did it become so primitive that so few stats matter to a player? I personally believe it's because they removed the 'skill tree'-system they had in the previous games. We used to find items with rarer attributes like +1 to , which would boost all the stats of that specific skill, sometimes it would increase all skills under a specific tree, or all skills in general... there is no replacement for this. Players realize this and can easily buy mid-level legendary items after simply collecting 'gold' from level 1 till 10. In short, finding a legendary item does not provide any kind of joy, as they are worthless and have inferior stats to many randomly created items. There is also the matter of unbalance. Surely, anyone who has entered either of the 2 hardest difficulties agree that 'elite mobs' (general enemies that have rare attributes to make them extraordinary) are harder than the actual bosses, they have the capabilities to slay your character with one blow and survive hundreds of blows, making them deadlier than the end-bosses on the same difficulty. Glitches/Bugs/Exploits Haven't seen many of them, they are quickly patched (+1). Experimenting with broken mechanics by sinking unnatural amounts of points into non-primary stats, making characters overpowered by other means is unrewarding, as this is always fixed. All characters are apparently supposed to be the same and follow a strict meta-build (-1). The biggest issue (in my opinion). This game was made for World of Warcraft fans, not for Diablo fans, this is seen and felt through each and every (but in different amounts) aspect of the game. That's understandable, World of Warcraft had a bigger playerbase than Diablo, except we all hate it when the greed for money is more important than the experience itself. They trust money, not fans. This is not the first time Activision Blizzard let their players down for the sake of money, it's seen in Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, Starcraft 2, Modern Warfare 3, Diablo 3 and we will probably see the same **** in Black Ops 2. In conclusion, it's a shallow game; Under the hood, under all the visuals and other distractions, in it's core - this game is as mentally stimulating as throwing a frisbee by yourself, oh, it's also designed for WoW fans, not Diablo fans. In any crowd, I could point out at least 3 people that could say what they could have done to easily increase customer satisfaction. Congratulations Blizzard, you have gone full retard. This article has the score adjusted, the previous post was set at a 0 score, while I meant to give Diablo 3 it's justified 1 out of 10. Expand

What redeeming qualities could this game possibly have that warrant a score higher than a 0? Could it be the heavily restrictive DRM? Could it be the pay to win BS? I feel like this "game" was bought more by people who are interested in the political / business sides of gaming, and the DRM that would finally be the end of piracy (which obviously isn't even true). It's like they bought it out of some kind of distorted, false interpretation of "morality", rather than to play a game.

Diablo 3 is also a perfect example of why many people feel classic gaming is superior. The idea used to be "This company is providing a game that I am interested in. Therefore, I will buy it so that hopefully they will make more in the future. I like to have fun!" But now the idea of "gaming" is "Wow, this company sure did rape us all in the ass really hard! Now I'm going to go on the internet and accuse anyone who didn't buy it of being self-entitled!"

When you buy a diablo game, you expect a certain type of gameplay, atmosphere and graphics, diablo 3 doesn't deliver any of that. There's diablo clones that are more like the original diablo games than diablo 3, that's just unacceptable. The graphics style is cartoonish, and the general atmosphere of the game is nothing like the gothic, diabolic and hellish atmosphere of the previous games. The graphics are bad for a 2012 game, but thats not very important, the style is'nt unique or memorable, its like the WoW designers were working on diablo 3. The story is unacceptably short for a 2012 game. Character customization was very important in previous games, however, in diablo 3 it's virtually non existent. This game isn't a hardcore rogue-action hack and slash PC RPG, it feels like a bad port of some console hack and slash game like Dark Alliance. I would rate this game higher if blizzard didn't try to earn money by abusing the diablo franchise, they should have given the game a different name. This is an obvious attempt to earn more money by making the game extremely simple, and thus accessible to casual gamers, but simple boring games like diablo 3 die fast. I can't imagine people that would be willing to play diablo 3 in 10 years, as is the case with diablo 2, in fact, I can't imagine why people would want to play this game more than a few days at most. I've been playing diablo 2 on LAN with my friends since its release, of course there were breaks when I didn't play it for a year or two, but so far none of my friends (including myself) have enjoyed diablo 3.

People forget that Diablo 2 took years to get to the state where people loved it. It wasn't until Lord of Destruction came out after they got a lot of feedback on Diablo 2 and the game just got more interesting and then when the synergy patch came out (1.10 I think?) it was like a brand new game. So I'm looking at this game as a long term investment with excellent short term benefits. It's a great game but the end game right now is hard for me to get into just because classes are being changed constantly for balancing and it's really hard to do anything in Inferno, the difficulty jump even from act to act is brutal. But honestly I haven't been so happy with a game in a long time. My first play through on Normal was phenominal for the story. Diablo III is both an entertaining game AND a huge let down. Yes, combat in the "heat of the moment" is enjoyable and frantic and managing to kill entire mobs of monsters causing them to explode in a red mist of gore is to be relished and yet ... See, compared to Diablo II, you get a lot of smallish improvements:
    - loot is properly shared now
    - you can craft (although auction house ruins it, see later)
    - you have checkpoints and more waypoints
    - you now have actions with cool down periods like in MMOs which add some depth to the combat
    - you can wreck scenery
    - the story is a little more fleshed out (although you'll just get bored of it after a little while - it's pretty dull and slow)

But then you have the massive problems which Diablo II didn't have:
    - maps are far less random and pretty much feel the same on every playthrough meaning they're less fun to replay
    - you no longer are able to equip two weapon sets for quick switching depending on monster immunities
    - the game needs you to be always online no matter what - and kicks you quite quickly if you go afk for a little while
    - levelling up is really dull now with zero choices to be made. The game has really become gear-dependant which is why I dislike WoW so much - instead of making a clever build that works well with your friends, everyone is the same minus gear and the choice of what attacks to use.

The absolutely BIGGEST flaw is the auction house, however. It completely ruins the point of the game because it's sooo much easier to just pick up gold and buy new gear than to play the game to get it. After 20 hours of playing, I collected a good 100.000 in gold yet barely had any decent armour. With a mere 10.000 gold, I got a really kick ass outfit including weapons which saw me wading through monsters as if they were butter. Honestly, the auction house shouldn't have this big an effect on the game yet it does. It also completely makes crafting pointless. Why spend 1500 gold on a weapon that may turn out to be crap if you can get a really good yellow item for a third of the price?

You have quite a few smaller problems too:
    - the music and atmosphere in general are far less effective - a sentiment which most Diablo II players share
    - the graphics are pretty dated and are too WoW-influenced nor do they convey the more gothic feel Diablo II used to have
    - there's less items to pick up and the fun of the horadrics cube is gone
    - etc. etc.

Honestly, this is a very very mediocre copy of Diablo II minus the great atmosphere minus the balance, minus the character choices, with an auction house that ruins the entire game's premise and basically ... it's a poor attempt at a sequel made by people who clearly don't have the slightest idea what made Diablo II so good. Considering most are ex-WoW staff members, why am I not surprised?

The list goes on and on. After hours of giving the game a chance to impress me and moving all the way to Act 3, I was absolutely disgusted how boring, childish, and overall fake everything came out to be. The atmosphere of the game isn't dark enough and I don't feel like I have any control over the outcome of the character. This game does not deserve the word Diablo in its title!! unlike D2, it had no itemization, map customization, and character customization.
The story is short, the map is small, and removed many good elements in D2.

May seem like a small thing but it kills suspension of disbelief, and after 12 years.... they didn't notice or care about that? Other dialogue is so cheesy it goes way beyond what's allowed these days in a top-tier title. Gameplay is feeling very repetitive.

I have logged around 65 hours into Diablo III, and while my binging has slowed down, I have yet to lose any enjoyment with this game. The reason I have been slowing down, actually, is because Hell has been giving me a bit of trouble, and I'm giving myself time to work carefully through it.

To start with, many of the systems have improved Diablo 2's archaic design, streamlining the experience and allowing for maximum fun with minimal hoops to jump through. Leveling from 1-60 is done much the same way as 1-99 in D2, by progressing from Act I to Act IV, and then starting Nightmare, and then Hell difficulties to finish reaching the max level. The difference is that Diablo 2 took a massive time investment and a tedious grind to actually achieve the level cap, whereas Diablo 3 allows you to reach 60 after playing through the three difficulties.

This speedier leveling system is mostly because of Inferno, a difficulty tacked onto the end of the game, designed to contain the best loot and the most challenging content. I, myself, have not reached Inferno mode, as I am only halfway through Hell, but I can say that I have heard terrifying things about how intense this new difficulty is. The visuals are crisp and smooth, and my computer can run it on its highest graphical settings without an issue. Skills are a joy to look at, a personal favorite of mine being "Electrocute", which is a wizard spell that is essentially Chain Lightning. The bosses all have interesting designs, most notably the final encounter of Act II, which brings a surprising amount of scale into the battle not seen in previous Diablo games. As always, the end of act cinematics are an absolute treat to behold, and even if you choose not to play the game, you should look them up somewhere to experience the incredible detail. Sound is satisfying, explosions, shattering stone and wood, and the screams of your conquered foes all filling your ears as satisfyingly as can be. The music is subtle at times, but fits the atmosphere as well as can be expected. The voice acting is especially satisfying, and I cannot find a character that speaks any differently than I would expect. The vocal shouts from Diablo 2 have returned, giving access to a quick method of thanking your allies, or calling for retreat, all given at least 2 variations to avoid endless spam of one phrase. Gameplay is, of course, the most important aspect of the game, and it is excellent. Each class plays very differently from one another, in my experience so far, and each have their pros and cons. The ranged classes are much "safer" in their damage dealing, but melee classes take 30% less damage by default to compensate for their playstyle putting them into the thick of things. The progression of skills and gear from 1-60 is wholly satisfying, as you will always be able to find an upgrade with each new level, whether through a drop in your own game, or through a fellow player that has posted an auction for an item you can't live without. The runes, similarly, unlock as levels grow. The game is designed in such a way that you will obtain a new skill, rune, or passive ability at least once with each level gained, so hitting that next benchmark is always a reward. The joy of random loot is a bit of a double-edged sword. Rare items can be either incredible or subpar, whereas the lesser version (Magic, with blue text) can often outdo the higher tier. While this may be frustrating to some, the concept makes it all the more satisfying when your rare item is rolled with your preferred stats in a high value, keeping the loot hunt constantly alive and invigorating. Thanks to the Auction House, even the items that roll stats you do not like can be turned into gold, and thus traded up to gear you would actually like.

There are many, many good things about Diablo 3. The gameplay is quick and rewarding, cutting down masses of demons and zombies as an unstoppable hero never gets old, and while the invincible feeling begins to wear off in Hell and Inferno, it is replaced with the satisfying feel of overcoming a challenging opponent that has a good chance of dropping some fairly stunning loot. I realize that many people are judging the game based on lag, and the always-online DRM, but it is not core to the gameplay, and while some people will see the lag and network issue as a dealbreaker, it can only improve with time, and in a few weeks I imagine that all of the issues can be resolved. I will not give the game a lasting score based on temporary problems, and many of the negative reviews on this site are being posted out of spite.

By no stretch of the imagination does Diablo III deserve a 0, or even a 5, based entirely on its own merits. As it stands, I am giving it a perfect 10, as I have already been given 65 hours of enjoyment, with many more hours to come.

That being said, the music is absent or entirely forgettable.
The "diverse" skill system actually just locks you into one-two viable builds once you hit inferno. The bosses are kind of an afterthought and designed to be easier than champion packs when they aren't just a walkover even at higher difficulties (magda lol) But the best thing

But the best thing about this game where you hunt for cool items is they screwed up their itemization so bad, that there are actually no really cool items to look forward to, just an endless stream of flavorless blues and rares with inflated main stat. Don't look here for the fun item affixes like procs that would trigger spells or transformations, because in D3, NO FUN IS ALLOWED.
Oh, and also you can tell from enough hours of play that they've really amped the scarcity on uniques/sets because hey it'll drive people to buy and sell on RMAH. If you don't intend to spend more money than the $60 full price you just dumped into it, there's a whole bunch of stuff you're not likely to ever see. Awesome!
Honestly, this is a terrible package and once you hit max level and get a good grip on how the game systems work, you'll understand it doesn't even begin to have the replayability factor you would expect from the Diablo series. Do yourself a favor and go play something else, you can't say I didn't warn you.

There is no excuse in the poor battle encounter design that disregard player play style and skill combination, there is no excuse in the poor diversity of the loot bonus, and there is no excuse in the linear player progression path. Diablo III is a well package game with great product value, however this is such flawed game in the design and system department that Blizzard should be ashamed of.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a Blizzard fan since they were making console games. It was a long time ago. I have seen over the time amazing game after amazing game come out from them. Until now. Don't get me wrong. Diablo 3 from a game play stand point is amazing. But thats were the good things end. Everything else is surprisingly average. The sound, the music, the voice acting, the graphics. All fail to impress in any way. There are glimmers of great in the sea of mediocrity but that doesn't make up for all the mess.

Speaking of a mess. The story is a disaster. It is so bad there is just no place to start. So i will just make a list of things it fails at: It fails:

    - at creating atmosphere
    - at creating scary villains
    - at making any kind of sense for the game
    - at making the player feel anything

So it pretty much fails across the board. All the things a story should do in a game context the Diablo 3 story doesn't do.

So what do we have in the end. A game with great game play, mediocre sound, music, voice acting and graphics and a story so bad it laughable. Buy it according to what matters to you in a game.

Is it their really so much difference between not letting you play the game if you don't have internet connection and for instance saying that you can't go to college because you're black. I mean really you can always (or almost always) get yourself internet connection just like you can change your skin color. Please show some solidarity with people who, like me, sometimes play their games on the go or want to play together with friends who don't have internet connection. If we don't protest now SOON ALL DEVELOPERS WILL FOLLOW BLIZZARD. And don't stop there don't buy any Blizzard products until they change their policy and tell all your friends to do the same or really soon you'll find that you won't be able to play any single player game without internet connection. I am not even going to discuss other concerns such as the fact that you don't really buy the game you kind of rent it from Blizzard, or the fact that there won't be any mods, or the lag, or the theft of the accounts, or the server issues, but I have to say a few words on the auction house. BLIZZARD SUPPORTS MODERN DAY SLAVERY by legalizing the trade of virtual goods. Just do a Google search and you'll find information on forced labor camps in China and other not fully democratic countries where prisoners are forced to play the game to support the regime or for the financial benefit of the prison guards. Don't be ignorant about this issue, there's no excuse, educate yourself, and search your conscience to determine whether you'd like to play with people who are forced by oppressive regimes to farm gold in the game you play simply for fun. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok so I'm writing a second review, as i've had time to really digest the game better, and the nostalgia cloud, that had surrounded my perception of the game has dissipated. Overall this is a solid hack and slash game. It is jolly good fun, but, taken as a whole it lacks any real inspiration. Story-wise, There are a couple moments that are awesome...like when Tyrael falls to earth, there is an operatic beauty to it. And his faith in humanity and decision to ditch the angel-wings recalls one of my favorite films: "Wings of Desire". Beyond these few moments, and the rather well done boss battles, There is very little, thematically, to feed the imagination. The rest of the story is filled with cheesy pop-pulp tripe. I can appreciate the design decision to flesh out the main heroes a bit more, but separate origin stories and hero cinematics seem unnecessary, and goes a long way in murdering the memory of the mystique and enigmatic qualities of the series' previous iterations. The graphical style is cartoony, and the heroes have gone from being plain old badasses (d1 and d2) to frickin' superhero demi-gods..The environments are pretty, and gloomy, But never haunting and gritty like D1 and D2. I'm sorry but it doesn't matter how gorey or how much fog you add, gothic horror has not been accomplished in this one. To be fair, the classes and their various assorted skills/runes are imaginative and fun. Combat is satisfying. the artists over at blizzard have done a great job on the world. It's just a shame for the diablo universe that the 3rds design direction compass was pointed so rigidly to cartoon land. Taken out of context the game itself is a good game. I've enjoyed playing it immensely,. Co-op is especially well implemented, and I look forward to more adventures with my friends.. But it is sad to see dreams of a worthy sequel go out the window. This is a solid Diablo clone game. But it is does not deserve the mantle of Sequel..It takes no risks. Tragically, There is little remaining of the heart of the first 2. And those shards have been glossed over so thoroughly with World of Warcraft sensibilities that you can scare detect their presence. Expand
