This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very unhappy with it. 10 years of development for that? I think we could have expected much more. Graphics, Sound, Game-play. What's really bad is the forced internet connection and the unavailability of their servers. Ok, they sold millions of copies, but...this was expect able. I want to play, when I want to play. 10 minutes or 10 hours, during the day or during the middle of the night. So come on: Give us a offline mode! Expand

I simply love it! I remember playing diablo 2 alot, and I also tried many mods for it, and diablo 3 really brings the good memories of the game. Its the best diablo out there, and the best hack and slash type game ever.

I thought all the negative reviews were out of touch angry nerds until I bought the game and tried it. I know you're thinking with blizzards' awesome track record of fun games it can't be all bad - I have news for you: events are handled with blizzard servers and not locally thus lag outs are common, there is no stats, no skill tree, nothing just linear button mashing and unlocking of new attacks.

I am not against the RMAH, but building the game around it is just wrong and no words can justify the design decision.

Let's put aside the technical issues that have been plaguing users - days of downtime, auction house barely functioning or frustrating to use due to bugs (disappearing listings, placeholders, improper sort-by results) and just dive into the game. You can play this game for dozens and dozens of hours and make no progress in the improvement of your character - I can count on one hand the number of gear drops I've earned for myself in 60 levels of play. Everything else: purchased on the AH. Nothing fun about that, but if you don't do it, good luck progressing. So now I'm in Inferno and I have the choice of either dying to 95% of the elite packs I meet while trying to earn better gear - or mindlessly grinding gold on lower levels like a human meat battery in the Diablo matrix to buy drops someone else was disappointed by when they couldn't use the item on their main. I'd love to play this game and gear my lil' guy through finding gear mostly on my own. As the game stands now, upgrades will almost never come from your own gameplay, unless you count the thrilling gameplay of grinding gold until the number on the screen is finally high enough to thrillingly bid on AH gear and then thrillingly mail it to yourself. This game is pretty bad, and I've played some real bad games in my 25+ years of PC gaming. The saddest part is that there's a kernel of great game here that seems to have been brutally beaten into submission by poor technical execution, saddled with online servers, and anchored to an auction house system that has become (instead of a support system) the meta game you are playing. It's Auction House III, featuring a special guest appearance by Diablo. Sad let down for a once-great title. Expand

    - Graphics could be better, suitable to the year the game was launched;
    - The combination of skills found in elite packs in Inferno is stupid, you will kill them, but you will die A LOT. Also, they will NEVER drop something to make it worth the amount of time you spent on them;
    - Repetitive, neurotic and obsessive gameplay, driving you to do the same things over and over again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely a game to remember. The new Diablo mechanism with 6 active skills to be distributed and 3 passive skills is pretty great. I believe it was based on Guild Wars. The single player game is a great entertainment in normal difficult. The Nightmare is when the game really starts. In Hell, it is basically when the game calls for a multiplayer experience, which is great, by the way. The only problem with this game that makes the score a 9, not a 10, is the story. It's not a bad story, it is a normal story that the good wins, differently from Diablo 2, which Baal wins on normal game and the worldstone is corrupted on the Lord of Destruction expansion. The fact that all goes bad and on the end everything is alright is the problem of the story. What happened is something really huge and amazing when it happens, but the simple way that the "hero" solves the problem makes that problem appears really weak, which it is not. In terms of story, Diablo 2 is tremendously better, but it does not makes Diablo 3 a game to be forgotten. The gameplay and online experience will be there to hold a lot of players. Expand

Right from the start of pre-ordering the game, I had to queue 6 hours just to collect a game i paid for months ago, i did not appreciate the fact distributors(Asiasoft) were making use of us as free-publicity / marketing stunt. While some may say this is not controlled by Blizzard, i say Blizzard shld pick better distributors. When I finally got home and tried to install, i had the "stuck at updating file issue" (great i can't even get the game to install). After spending additional hours of research, and getting the game installed, got the client up, clicked launch, and wow i got the "stuck at launching" problem. After another few hours spent researching on how to get past this problem, finally got into the game, played for a few minutes and bam ERROR 37. So after spending an arduous amount of time playing / dc-ing, i had a shock the game was over so quickly due to lack of content and reeled from the realization that the game wanted you to REPEAT the same thing another FOUR times to experience the entire content of the game. This was an extremely excruciating experience and i wish i could get a refund for purchasing a product like this. Probably the worst game i've ever spent money on and if you think FFXIV was bad, Diablo 3 brings "bad" to a whole new level. It is true when they say "all hell breaks loose on May 15", indeed, they just didnt say it was going to be on the ppl who bought the game in good faith. Expand

In a nutshell, Diablo 3 is a well refined Diablo 2 for modern times. Visceral physics-based destruction, awesome monster models, realistic CGI cutscenes, full voice acting and pleasing special effects are all excellent additions to the Diablo franchaise, making the experience that much sweeter.

It seems the nearly 11 years of development wasn't enough - some character voice acting (Female barbarian, for example) is terrible, with a lack of enthusiasm and a poorly imitated accent. The story and setting in the final act felt very rushed - the supposedly epic moment in the game featured very small areas, no main city, few monsters, and very rushed story - a lot happens at once, and it all resolves very quickly.

The gameplay has a lot of much-needed refinements, notably the flexible and open skill talent system, single-potions removes the annoying potion spam and randomized 'events' add replayability and exploration. The combat is very satisfying and addictive, and looting monsters has never been better! Multiplayer features a lot of improvements, such as achievements, an auction house, simple partying, proper 'exclusive loot' system and cloud support. Unfortunately, Blizzard played it safe in this area, and unless you've never played previous Diablo games, you'll find very little new for gameplay.

It's still a click-fest; Blizzard hasn't discovered the wonders of a WASD movement system, though admittedly the 'click area' for monsters is quite forgivable. There were issues around large monsters in trying to move your player instead of attacking - the 'click area' for these demons are usually huge and not very intuitive - I repeat, a WASD movement system would fix this easily. Lastly, the 5 different character classes are vastly out of balance, where the melee classes have very little difficulty, and certain skills are downright trash. Maybe they will be useful in PvP (which was not shipped with the game). Lastly, for $60, Diablo 3 doesn't offer a long game - levels are no longer completely randomly generated a-la Diablo 1, and it only took 17.5 hours to absorb the majority of the game's content! For 11 years of development, a little more substance was expected.
The controversial 'always-on' requirement, aimed at reducing game piracy, causes solo players to suffer. Players can now suffer from lag and disconnects, and is not playable when the servers are down. Not the best decision by Blizzard, but it's not as bad as some say, since the game works great when the servers are up.

Overall, Diablo 3 is a much-needed refinement to the Diablo games, well deserving of the "III" attached. Highly recommended to Diablo fans, those looking for fast-paced multiplayer co-op mayhem or those interested in the next best PC-exclusive title! Unfortunately, Blizzard played it safe with Diablo 3, with very few major gameplay features added and it still feels like an unfinished product, with a semi-operational auction house, promised PvP and vastly imbalanced gameplay. To end on a high note, Blizzard is known to support their games for years and years, so there's no doubt this review's complaints will become obsolete in the future!

-The fight mechanics up to and including Inferno Act 1 is an 8, because there really is no one build that you have to run and you can take a hit if you need to be in close doing damage.

-The fight mechanics from Inferno Act 2 and onward is a -10, because if you take 1 or 2 hits you are instantly dead. All classes including Warriors and Monks are forced to Kite, you have no other viable solution, you have to KITE. You are forced to play the game under a very limited and narrow design of skills.

    Loot Drop -1
-You don't get loot that is useful to the class you are currently playing. Instead 99% of the time when you do get a useful loot drop, it is good for another class. You have to go to the Auction House and sell it and then use the money to buy the item that should have dropped for you. Most other modern RPG's have set it up where loot that drops is at least geared towards your class, but not Blizzard they know better. In reality, the loot system is set up to force you to use the Real Money Auction House to buy gear. Basically, Diablo 3 is a pay to play Microtransaction based MMO (Asian style). It blows, it blows, it blows.

The game gets a solid 2, and that is all that it deserves.

Lastly, whoever decided to make Diablo at transexual at Blizzard should be fired. I don't want to see a Diablo with **** it is NOT RIGHT. Thanks for pulling a George Lucas and raping what was my favorite RPG franchise.

Buy Torchlight 2 if you want to play a better game.

Diablo 3 is an abysmal sequel in the Diablo franchise. Removing character customization has given the game zero replay value. For a while I thought the blacksmithing might be a nice touch, but you can't actually craft much gear for your own use. The random attributes negates all benefit of crafting. Not to mention that training and increasing the level of both blacksmithing & gemcrafting carries over to ALL your characters. That alone removes another challenge of starting a new character...just have your main craft all the gear you need (which will cost a fortune to finally get the attributes you want) and then stick them in the communal stash. The auction house is a joke, there is minimal map randomization, rare items are useless, no single player play...the list goes on.

That being said, I opened a ticket requesting a refund and am expecting my money back any day now. Back to playing D2!

That is just a small list of the issues that I have found while playing the game, and I could continue listing things had I nothing to do. The rest of the the reviews are evidence enough to not want to buy the game. Diablo 3 should not have even been released in its' current state, and it saddens me that Blizzard would ruin such an excellent franchise. The game feels very unpolished in many ways, and it's strangely missing a lot of features you'd never think a game like this would be missing. From graphical setting, to user interface issues, to key binding -- Diablo 3 is missing a lot of customization that it needs. Worst of all, there are no WASD controls; you must move via the mouse. Why do that? Why not at least give players the option of moving via WASD keys? The gameplay is solid, if a but uninspired. It's mostly just a click-fest. I'd much rather play a lot of other games if I were looking to satisfy my hack-and-slash cravings. In fact, I regret buying it for $60 -- I'd much rather have spent $20 on Torchlight 2 and then had $40 to buy something else. The user scores on MetaCritic are undeniable: people are terribly disappointed with this game. Does it deserve a 0? Of course not, that's ridiculous. Does it deserve anything above a 7? Well, I hate numerical scores, but I can say that this game is nothing more than a mere good hack-and-slash RPG. I played several hours in, trying out each of the character classes, and then put the game down. It's been over a week and I haven't touched it, and have no desire to.

I recommend passing this one up, and buying Torchlight 2 instead. Save yourself $40.

What happened to getting those item drops that you had to think "hmm, more DPS, or that +4 to the skill that Im using?" Hell, what about STR requirements on armor, making you forgo those points in INT or VIT so that you could get that new armor on? The game feels like a dumbed down version of D3. The highlights: great hack n' slash, endless loot, good graphics, high replay value, co-op (social), good sound track, better story than most games in the genre, pvp arenas (still coming, but optimistic), humorous dialogue at points, made by Blizzard so all around quality. Lowlights: have to be online to play, and currenntly there is some latency issues, non-sensible gear at points (bothers me at least), nothing new...only refined, some bugs. With that being said this is a solid game that will bring a lot of enjoyment and life waisting oppurtunity to those who like the genre, series, or Blizzard games in general. I highly recommend this game and would like to reasure those worried about any initial bugs, and latency issues that this game was made by Blizzard...they will be corrected. Also, for all those haters, Blizzard takes a decade to release games, and that is also responsible for the quality output. I feel they were doing all the Gaming community a favor by putting the game out when they did, instead of waiting another six months. The lack of character customization is a let down as well, yes they wanted to focus on loot for customization, but the loot is boring as heck. In diablo II and other clones your character's unique nature was based on builds, stats, and gear. Every player could tweak as needed which added a bit of depth. Diablo III only allows customization with loot. You don't have to make permanent or semi permanent decisions about your build. Now as loot is the only true unique aspect of your character, you'd think it would be relatively interesting. Not so much. It's so random that it is basically meaningless. A wand could be a strength/dex wand while an axe could be an uber weapon for int users. Even unique items or "legendary" have extremely random stats making some of them completely unusable by the intended user. Then there is the stats themselves. There are so few of them that choosing between items requires 0 thought "oh this one adds more damage or health, it must be better". There is no "should I get the item that gives you a chance to freeze enemies, or should I get the item that gives me health?" decisions. Of course there is also that huge issue of having no SP offline or mods, and the AH. The game is balanced around the ability to buy items instead of farming for them, making it a lot less exciting when something good drops, because you mine as well go buy it on the ah first. I tried playing the game without it, but you can't keep up without it due to the terrible itemization and lack of gear dropping. In general game is meh, couldn't make it past the first 2 acts because of boredom, and the entire time I would take breaks to look up better diablo clones because im in the mood for a hack n' slash but DIII was such a let down. Loot system is very terrible and random and items have ridiculously random stats, the item system is just stupid copy from world of warcraft, not creative at all.

Diablo 3 DRM just ruins the game, an internet reguirement will not stop the game from being pirated, internet reguirement will not stop the game from being hacked, the only reason why internet is reguired is the real money auction house.

Hardcore mode for example is just ruined because of internet, one disconnect and you might die, or server crash and you lose it all, hacked and lose it all.

Diablo 3 is just kite, click, kite, click kite, click kite. The game story is terrible and it doesnt make you want to say " wow " and playing it again on harder difficulties is just an agony after doing it on normal, not because of harder difficulty, its because the replay value is terrible and new modes dont bring anything new except loot thats sickly random.

Diablo 3 class balance is also terrible, casters have so much easier time and can do with much less gear.

Diablo 3 is catered for casual gamers, the only difficulty in inferno is kite spamming and spam ressing after you die, there is no real penalty for death on normal mode so spam ress away.

The biggest flaw in diablo 3 is the real money auction house, and i wanted to say more about it and why it will ruin the game.

Discussion about the value of diablo 3 gold in the real money auction house.

So a lot of people seem to think that the value will be 20 euros for every 1 million diablo 3 gold.
Now lets say some facts, diablo 3 has 6 million players or more. In most countries the minium wage is 5-10 euros a hour, and thats minium, and most people in world get minium wage as a payment.
Now if diablo 3 had the gold value of 20 euros for every 1 million gold. An average farmer in diablo 3 at max level can farm anywhere between 300k - 500k gold a hour that means in 20 hours ( if person did this as a job ) you would make 10 million diablo 3 gold, and now if the value was the assumed 20 euros for every 1 million diablo gold, thats 200 euros a day, and in a month thats 6000 euros. A serious gold farmer can make 1m+ a hour with farming or auction house item flipping. Also understand that there is more poor then rich people in world.
So 6000 euros a month playing a game?
    ... Think again!!
If the text above was reality, everyone would be doing diablo 3 as a job. And most people in games do not buy stuff to become better. They play for it instead. And if the chances of making 200 euros a day was reality everyone would be doing that.
Pretty much all online games are spammed with gold farmers, these guys will play 24 hours a day in hope making even little money. They will undercut you, spam the rmah with thousands of items. After playing mmorpgs for years i can say that the ratio to gold seller and buyer is pretty much 100 sellers for every 10 buyers. This means prices will inflate crazy hard. In pretty much every mmorpg i know the black market value for gold is 0.70 euros for 3-5 hours of gameplay work ( gold farming ). Do notice i used word black market this means there is less sellers as legal gold selling doesnt exist, diablo 3 does not have black market, its open and safe market so there will be much much much more sellers. So more logical value, i can safely say in that in my opinion, 2 weeks after RMAH is live the gold will be anywhere between 15 - 20 million diablo gold for 1 euro. Everyone will be thinking " i will make hundreds of dollars, but when theres millions of players thinking the same and only 10 buyers for every 100 sellers, think again. Also diablo 3 has i think it was 10 free auctions after that deposit to rmah costs 1 euros for every item.
This means 10 free deposits a week, and after that it costs money, this means the undercutting competition will be insane, as people do not want to lose their free deposits for nothing. Now this is why the game will be ruined, people will want to make money, the normal gold auction house will be so inflated that if you want to buy any good item for max level you will never find it from the gold auction house as gold will be worthless.

Its sad that this game, that looks beautiful and has good gameplay is ruined by greediness. Without the real money auction house, this game would have been perfect, as that would also have ment that internet would not have been a reguirement.

I have a total of 162 hours in Diablo 3 as of writing this, along with many hours played in D1 and D2, and I can officially say I am addicted to D3.

So far I've been having a blast. I knew from being in the beta that I wanted to play a barbarian, as I thought it was the most fun and satisfying class. I smashed and wreaked havoc all the way to the highest difficulty, Inferno, which is where the game really began for me. Inferno is definitely not for those with little patience or lacking in gear. It is a huge jump from Hell difficulty and is quite challenging, but I'm loving it non-the-less.

As for my wizard, I've been playing with friends. Playing with others is a very different experience than playing solo. Unlike the previous games, everybody gets their own drops which is a huge improvement from "every man for himself." It's also nice to have friends that will share or trade drops they've gotten with you that they can't use. The difficulty and exp per person added also goes up, which makes playing with friends all that more rewarding.

As for the remaining 3 classes, they're very fun and unique in playstyle, but the Barb is for me! =]

So that's been my experience with gameplay and classes. Now for some random things:
    - The cutscenes at the beginning of new acts are jaw-dropping. Blizzard has always done such an amazing job with cinematics in their games and D3 is no different.
    - I actually enjoy the graphics. At first, I didn't really like the art style they chose to go with. It looked blurry, even on a high end computer. After getting passed the first boss and into new areas that weren't in the beta, I learned to appreciate the style they went with and started noticing all the tiny details they put into this game and often find myself saying, "Wow, that's beautiful." If you look closely, you'll even see the old scrolls for town portal and identifying. I highly recommend watching "The Art of Diablo" at the GDC Vault to get a better understanding.
    - There's a lot of nostalgia to be found in D3. At first, again, it didn't quite feel like a Diablo game to me but as I progressed further into the game I started to feel it. I won't spoil any, but they've added plenty references to both D1 and D2.
    - Blizzard listens to their customers and rolls out patches accordingly. In their upcoming patches, they're including fixes/changes that have been big concerns within the community, along with Quality of Life improvements and features that weren't there at launch. To see them act so quickly is reassuring that they'll be improving upon this game even more.
    - The communication between the Community Managers on the forums is so great to have. I got real used to the feeling that the relationship between the Developers and the community was on such a personal level when I played City of Heroes. To see the CM team constantly on the forums, answering questions, and updating us on incoming patches is refreshing.

Alright, I won't leave this review without addressing at least SOME drawbacks:
    - The auction house is very iffy. In a way, it almost feels like this game is more about grinding for gold to spend on good items than grinding for epic loot. I've been trying to avoid buying items off the auction house and instead go by my own drops, but sometimes Inferno can just be too difficult and after a long period of getting nothing good I look to the auction house. So, it has it's benefits, but I'm just not quite sure how to feel about it at this point.
    - Connectivity. It's important to know that this is an always-on multiplayer game with a single player option, not the other way around. With that said, servers do have to come down from time to time to patch in fixes or features or to maintain the servers. Besides the first few hours of launch, I have not had a SINGLE issue connecting to the servers (not including patches and maintenance.) I sometimes get high latency which results in awful lag. This could be on my end (I live with two other gamers) but it is a widely reported issue by others as well.
    - Hacking. Blizzard games have always been a huge target for hackers, simply because they're so popular and there's plenty of easy money to be made. Hacking is especially prominent during a new release of a game or expansion. With that said, I highly highly highly recommend buying an authenticator or using the free mobile phone app if you care about your stuff. As someone who got hacked in WoW 2 years ago, I can vouch for Blizzard having amazing customer service and got my items restored quickly. They've always been outstanding whenever I've needed help from them.

Honestly, I just don't have anything bad to say. I know the game isn't perfect, but I also understand they'll be working on this game for many years to come and I look forward to seeing all the improvements and features that they will add in the future.

    Reason for a 0 score:
    1) Put in an always online requirement without putting up the required infrastructure support for all players wanting to play a game at all time. - Since they make it a requirement for people who just want to play a single player session to log on ALL the time and comms with the server ALL the time, then they should have made sure that their server capacity are big enough to support the increase server load. Moreover they could have put in place more server in more region, so that they can maintain the server during midnight, when most people of the region are sleeping. Instead, they only put up 3 server and this make it very likely that there will be high server load all round the clock. Obviously they just want to milk the cash cow.

    2) reducing the loot drop and quality to a ridiculously low level just to cater to the supposedly increase availability of gears from the Auction house. Basically they say that they take into account the availability of Auction house when deciding on the loot table. And going by the current drop rate, they expect ALL players to use the Auction house in order to supplement the loot drop if they want to progress at a reasonable pace without excessively tedious and long grinding process. Now this might appeal to some players and other who have complaint about the gold seller and other loot buyer in D2. But for people like me who just want to play the game and play multi session with friends on occasion, it breaks the immersion of the game and it seems that now I cannot ignore the Auction House now (whereas in D2 I don't care since what other people do does not affect me) and I will not be able to progress in the game without excessive frustration if I don;t partake in the Auction House. This is probably in the grand plan too, so that when Real Money Auction House comes online, more would be tempted to put up the better gears there and buyers will be forced to use RMAH if they want the legendary/rare gears.

    3) Skill tree - or lack there of. Now this is more of a personal choice. Some embraces it, but to me, it actually make me feel less diversity in my character. Technically there are thousands and thousands of combination I can play with, but the thing is, if I create 2 witch doctor, they would have access to the EXACT same skill set. And this means that once the game mature, there would be even more cookie cutter build than what blizzard is admitting now. 4) Hacking and their customer service. Hacking ... I can accept that it may happens and loop holes may happen. But Blizzard seems to be in denial and their fan boys are up in arms over claims of people been hack, even blaming the victim! This is perverse logic and it really turns me off that Blizzard actually condone such behaviour on their forum. On the other hand, they have been removing the post of the players who are overly critical and impolite about their opinion (which doesn't surprise me since it has been happening since a few years ago, when blizzard start to get a big ego). And they seems to disregard the well documented case of a few players who have ONLY their current player's loot compromise. They keep saying that the players are at fault and most likely reason is keylogger/phishing and what not. But if that is the case - a) why did some players only had one character's loot compromised and not the others? if the hacker really get their hand on the user name and password, then he would have sold ALL the gears from ALL the characters.
    b) Why is it that only their blizzard account is compromised and not their more valuable bank account? And don't make me laugh by saying that the hackers are sitting on the account. Once they get their hands on the credential, they would quickly cash out, since the over time, it is more likely for the user to detect the compromise.

    4) Which brings me to the next point - inadequate security. Until recently the password is not case sensitive and does not log you out after repeated tries. It seems that blizzard is simply skirting their responsibility and telling everyone to get an authenticator to increase their security? for a game?! And if so, why is it not included in the game itself if it is so important?

    5) patch by stealth - and I really disliked the tendency of Blizzard to patch by stealth and not publicly admitting that they have loopholes.

And to those Fanboys, you have been saying give the game some time, and it is now coming to almost 3 weeks and their server has NOT been improving and lag is still present even when you can play. now accounts actually start to get hack. So I truly will return the game and not buy another Blizzard product again. Those who bought it online and those whose country support lemon law, I would encourage you to do the same.

Diablo 3 is a garbage collection simulator with a dumbed-down, uber-monetized Diablo clone tacked on as an afterthought, featuring TWO great big tacky gift shops full of overpriced crap conveniently located by the EXIT.

In a game about loot drops you can go to level 60 without ever finding a viable upgrade. Loot drops are deliberately withheld in order to force players to purchase all upgrades at the Auction House, for a 15% transaction fee. The loot you do find all has completely useless stats, and 10-15 levels lower than you throughout the game, providing the carrot on a stick. The entire game is loaded with conspicuously large money sinks that offer the false promise of another route to obtaining viable equipment, but end up costing a fortune and never end up providing any practical benefit.

The game makes extensive use of procedurally generated content, the product of random number generators, without any apparent thought given to whether the resulting content makes any sense. Examples: item stats uniformly suck, maps aren't very random at all, elite monster pack super-powers bypass skill and stats entirely. The "Inferno" difficulty setting seems to be little more than "a place-holder of infinite difficulty" to provide Blizzard time to finish the game after release, but of course players beat it right away and found that the loot there sucks as much as it has all along.

It is grind-tastic and cartoony pastel, as though it was made by the World of Warcraft team. Oh wait, it was!

At every opportunity for the game to reward the player, it instead rewards Activision/Blizzard. It is perverse. Do not buy. The game itself feels like it could have been slapped together in a year and every design decision appears to have favored their micro-transaction scheme over game design principles and player enjoyment.

While a major loot overhaul might make this game a lot more bearable to play in the short term, I do not expect to see meaningful changes in the near future, and even so it would certainly not be enough to make this game worthy of the name it bears. Activision has spent a fortune on marketing and buying positive mainstream reviews. I expect they will rely on that investment and generally refuse to acknowledge that this release is an utter disaster, so long as people are still buying it because they don't know any better. Don't be that guy.

Path of Exile is a much better game, currently in beta, and its developers are opposed to "PAY2WIN".

    RIP Blizzard

First of all the skill tree does not allow for a great deal of customization and when leveling up we don't even get to choose which skill we want to unlock, it's already determined. Also we no longer get to spend attribute points, they increase automatically as we level up. Personally if there is one mechanic I like about RPGs is deciding where I spend my points. The story is not really engaging and the campaign is quite short, I know that this game is designed to be played more than once to unlock every skills and runes but I think the campaign could have been a little longer for those of us who enjoy storytelling. I am not going to comment about connection issues as this is something that Blizzard will fix soon no doubt.
Another thing that is a little strange to me is the damage system, the base damage of a weapon will increase your overall damage. I can understand this makes sense for the barbarian but for a wizard it seems bizarre to run around with a mace and a shield to increase spell damage and protection. In most RPGs caster are inefficient with melee weapons and shields and it makes sense like that.
This is still a very good game... but not awesome. Blizzard could have innovated a little bit more... it's not like they didn't have time! I really wish they would start taking more risks when developing a game, they have to get out of their comfort zone. With the money they are making they have to push innovation and stop sticking to what simply works.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off since most people only read the first line I'll make my point clear: Avoid this game.

    Artstyle: 8 / 10

The art varies from person to person on how much they like it, and considering the scale of models and animations on screen I would like to say that this was fairly well done. There's of course some lackluster color palletes in some areas and overall I'm not a huge fan of the player-character designs. Not much to really say on this subject really.

    Design: 2 / 10

This is a rather long one to get into so instead I'm going to go over of some of the glaring issues which take the enjoyment out of the game: Diablo 3 has been largely designed around the Auction house, which is ironic since an application of an Auction House should prove be supplementry. Blizzard Rep's have even stated that drop rates were signifigantly lower as a result and that gameplay at higher levels will reuire the player to use the Auction House. This creates the "pay to win" scenario which becomes Diablo 3, witht he upcomnig release of the RMAH this will only become more aggrevating on players that are trying to be self sufficiant. Itemization is terrible, and the "legendaries" are nothing more than rare items *random terrible stats* with a different color for their name. This plagues the player to use the AH to find something that will help them progress, and is likely not an issue until hell / inferno modes.

Crafting is a high risk low return venture which i would pit on par witht he recent 38 Studios issues and Rhode Island. (RI Invested in a startup MMO, it went south.) Simply put its a wasted and bad investment.

Farming items and being excited about loot has become farm gold until you can buy what you want, or wait for thr RMAH and buy with with real money.

Online DRM for a game that is played largely as a single player since larger groups on higher settings are almsot impossible to play as. Stacked with having unstable and often laggy servers while playing alone leads to alot of player frustration wondering why they have to deal with lag while playing alone.

Several UI problems, both in game and extremly bad in the Auction house.

Auction house issues, having the functionality the game was built around down for hours on end, at this point the commidity auctions (gems, tomes etc) have been down for 11 days straight with no ETA on their return. Really shows the flaw with the AH being needed to progress and yet its unreliable. I'm beating a dead horse here when I saw that the Auction House's central focus point of the games oveall design has been the core of mose of the issues, which the other is largely in itemization.

Inferno mode is untested, Blizzard itself just took a random point and "doubled it" figuring this would provide a challenge, this however is an amateur move for a team of designers you would expect to have the common sense to check all the varibles without going into launch blindly. Inferno mode beings a kite fest or get one shotted, which is somewhat possible for some classes (albeit alot of deaths) to impossible for melee classes.

Enrage timers on Bosses in Inferno. Again, terrible design choices done by inexperience with the same heavy handed design found in WoW. Since the health and damage of enemies in Inferno is dreastically high with no testing, putting on enrage timer on a boss without knowing what a reasonably geared player's DPS should be is downright foolish.

    ========================

I'm going to cut it short there, theres several more issues as well but the point across is that there is a large amount of terrible design chocies in play and monetization of the game is the only thing working as intended.

I would highly reccomend people avoid Diablo 3 unless you are ok with "paying to win"

Playing this game with friends that were wearing nostalgia goggles was fun for an hour or two, but what is the point in this game? I know it's supposed to be all loot and story does not matter, but why loot anything in the first place? It's not like you can compete in PVP yet, and once that is released it can not possibly be fun as there are hardly any tactics. Even I, now a few days after launch have had many many problems. This is one buggy game. An example: Many people have to make another Windows account in order to log in for the first time after any updates. What to expect from this game: Boredom and even more of it. Go walk around in small maps and hover your mouse cursor over things until they die. Then pick up the "loot" and be happy your stats are now +1 when it does not matter at all to anyone including yourself once the nostalgia wears off. How is the combat refined? It is very slow paced and once you go past Act 1 your screen turns into clustered fireworks and keep pressing until the mobs have disappeared. Now people saying the opposite yell at me trying to convince me otherwise and say: Try playing a mage or witch-doctor. Really? It is not news to anyone that a mage is a glass-canon and should avoid melee attacks. You freeze them with a spell that has a cool down then walk away and shoot at them. That is your tactic through the entire game.
Yes I am a little exaggerating to get my point across, but only a little.

The story sounds interesting, then again it is full of cliches and so badly done that you could not care less.
I did not once feel motivated enough to care about any character or dialogue, even though I gave it my best and wanted to like this game because of my friends.

Besides that there is no feel of a community at all. Sure you can put items into the auction house but that is about it. Why bother making online a requirement?

Really quite a good game, but it suffers more-so due to its popularity.

It appears they tried to do both, resulting in a very simplistic and hand-holding beginning - being limited to exploring only the areas related to the quest you were on. - removal of any semi-permanent decision making.
But then designed the later stages (hell / inferno) with such difficulty that only the most dedicated could progress, which sadly left little for the inbetweens - who couldn't handle the difficulty but desired to play more.
The lack of a difficulty settings is felt rather heavily due to this.

The story is quite a bit more visible than in the previous games, however once you know the story it only serves to break the game-flow.
The graphics are great, the abilities often feel satisfying with little screen shakes on big attacks and the music and voices are good.
Besides the minor server bugs at release due to capacity, which have now disappeared as fewer are playing, and outside of a single in town DC (probably on my end) I've experienced no crashes or graphical bugs.
A pity they didn't implemented a queue system to log in for the launch.

A quality game none the less, for some more than others.

Unexciting items, unexciting bosses, repetitive content, login issues, friends have all been hacked. Overall the game is a game built around the excitement of items but thanks to their money machine the RMAH the game is horrible. No point in playing a game centered around finding items when the best items are right on the auction house and will only be worse once the RMAH is out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm very disappointed in this game.

Story - Killing Cain? Come on now. How can the consistent character of ALL DIABLO'S just die during the first act? I imagined Cain to be more heroic, maybe a sacrifice in Act 4 to save Leah that traded his soul for her life. That would have been amazing, but the only sacrifice we saw was Tyreal becoming a (useless) mortal. He didn't even do much to arrive and help. Also, Leah was beautiful and while I was getting excited for her character development, she just turns into Diablo and we melt her face. Thanks Blizzard for creating a main character that added nothing to the experience. Gameplay - The game is very tedious, you're just farming & buying on AH. The excitement to pick up a drop/identify an item was not the same as WoW or D2. As I got to Hell Act 2, I started hating the farm + AH combo, didn't even want to deal with that for leveling another character. The character progression has been simplified to the point that any idiot could play, with 4 button & 2 mouse, there wasn't much of a plethora of options/abilities you could roll out. One of the joys of D2 was having a huge inventory of spells that could be cast for different situations, we're fed a 1-dimensional skillset.

    Cinematic's - Great quality, blizzard never disappoints. That's why I gave a solid 1.

Games nowadays have evolved so much, that our expectations are through the roof. Here is a list of games that were better: Dragon Age, Skyrim and WoW. I'm sure there are more.

It's the first time in my life I can barely play a single player game because of lag. It's ridiculous. Don't fear rare enemies or million HP bosses. Your unconditional heroes will be victims of lag spikes and you will be unable to avoid them. This is one of the worse game launches I've seen. Ever.

This could have all been avoided if Blizzard simply made a single player offline mode, none of these problems would be an issue. Blizzard is blaming hacking on the victims. I know a handful of friends who have been hacked and Blizzard did absolutely nothing for them. I found out that my friends who got hacked did not have an authenticator. I got an authenticator after those incidents. Days later, I was hacked and Blizzard isn't doing a damn thing about it. Poor customer service and a veritable plethora of bugs make this game an unenjoyable experience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played 100+ hours of this game on Hardcore mode. Leveled each class to at least 30+ (except Wizard).

Here is a pro and con list that I've compiled:

    Pros

    1. Skills and runes are varied.

    2. The affixes for monsters are cool and interesting.

    3. Hardcore mode was included.

    4. The sound bites of lore.

    5. Achievements. 6. The banner that you can customize.

    7. Armor dye.

    8. More gem grades (more than D2).

    9. Cool cinematics.

    Cons

    1. A lot of the skills and runes seem worthless compared to others.

    2. Players can receive credit and quest experience while sitting in town.

    3. The checkpoint system is easily exploited. For instance, players can repeatedly farm the same rare monster pack if it's subsequent to a checkpoint.

    4. The art direction is a little too over-the-top. In other words, too WoWish, with the big hands, shoulders, etc. I'd prefer it if Diablo 3 were a little more bleak and realistic looking. The monsters in this game look evil, but they're evil in a silly over-the-top way, not in a "holy #&#@ that thing is actually scary" kind of way.

    5. The story is juvenile as well as predictable.

    6. The voice acting is too over-the-top and the lines are, again, juvenile. Not all of it, but a good portion. For example, "You will never defeat me! Rawr!" - Skeleton King. Come on now. The Skeleton King in the original Diablo was much more intimidating and scary.

    7. Game is too short. In an age where games like Skyrim exist, this is unacceptable.

    8. The music is forgettable, and the way it is blared in the cinematics is annoying. The only song I liked was the reimagined Tristram theme in the first act.

    9. Followers can't be used in multiplayer games.

    10. A lot of times, there are too many effects, monsters and stuff on the screen all at once in multiplayer games.

    11. Itemization in its entirety is less interesting and simpler in D3 than D2. "I'm a Witch Doctor; therefore, I concentrate on intelligence (DPS) and vitality, derp. All done." And the items are equally uninteresting. Then there are the horrendous drops. Does Magic Find even work? Finally, legendaries seem too rare and are not powerful enough.

    12. Wizards running around with two handed axes and Barbarians with daggers. In other words, classes, for the most part, do not restrict which items you can or cannot use.

    13. Male wizard looks like a pansy while the female wizard looks fine.

    14. No way to search for players to look at their items, achievements, and characters. You can only look at the profiles of players who you've recently played with--or your friend's. 15. The time it takes to get to 60 is too short. 16. No PKing. And by PK, I mean actual PKing, not World of Warcraft battlegrounds and Arena (but as of now we don't even have that). 17. Matchmaking as opposed to a readily available list of public games where you can select exactly which game you want to join like in D2. 18. Having to listen to the same lines of dialogue and play through the same story events over and over again even though you're at the point where you've experienced it all before and is now only interested in leveling and itemization. 19. The servers are too unstable for a game that is online only. 20. Feminine-looking Diablo. Why did they do this? I don't know, but it looks stupid.

I like the graphics (yes, they are a tad cartoonish unlike the other Diablo games) but the environment itself is moody and "feels" big. The game seems almost too easy on Normal, which is fine with me as I want to feel badass while being able to enjoy the game......not yell at it. They definitely simplified this from its predecessor.......again, fine with me. I just want to kill, look cool doing it and grab some really cool loot and Diablo 3 delivers. Expand

Diablo 3 is being hacked relentlessly by the second week. With over 28,000 threads (not posts THREADS!) worth of hacked players on Blizzards own forums. Blizzard is outright denying all of it, It's so bad two games journalist have been hacked one of them a eurogamer reviewer who gave the game a score it didn't deserve.

Blizzards Greed driven answer to this was to make a buck out of the hackings and aren't interested in helping people, only selling their broken and bypassed authenticators.

Meanwhile Blizzard just keeps on denying the problems with their game. While trying to spoon feed their customers garbage.

That means blizzard up the stakes and made D3 a little more challenging. Some things where blizzard could improve. - Chat system would be very nice. D2 didn't need one but collaboration in gaming has changed over the years. - maybe every two months they could upload some new events or change the events. I know there are a lot but I would enjoy some surprising new battles. Other than that I think this game is an excellent buy and has more replay value then any other game that came out this year. This game is a horrible excuse for a sequel. Diablo 1, Diablo 2, and Diablo 2:LOD had a very gritty, medieval/dark/horror art style. Diablo 3 on the other hand, still has the horror style, only done with a crayon. The game's art direction is a total "slap in the face" for any old school fan of the franchise. The game's art direction is a total "slap in the face" for any old school fan of the franchise. Many people bought computers, and equipment for Diablo 3's release. When servers went live, it was quite obvious that the multi-billion dollar company Blizzard was not prepared. Servers were overwhelmed, and I personally was not able to play the game due to login errors two hours after launch. The story is a absolute disgrace. Villains have a very campy feel to them, telling you they're exact plans and taunting you in such a way that it insults your intelligence. You can only play the game online, even though it was tested and designed to be a single player game. The real money auction house and the gold auction house is hit/miss with me. It works because there are no more community lobbies like there were in D2 to set up trades. This however, ruins the atmospheric fun in joining your own games from channel lists. Let it be known that the gold currency auction house was comptely inflated with people farming explotable "gold chests" that blizzard took over a week and a half to hotfix. These "gold chest" farming runs, allowed players to continuously farm the best loot in the game, with little if any effort. The result was a inflatuated market early on, with people selling items for the upmost of 20,000,000,000 gold peices. The game automatically throws you into a random public game, if you so choose to play multiplier. It is designed to allow you to pick a starting point in a quest, and join a public game from there. The feel of the "community" is like a ghost town because of it. You can only play with up to four players, which is half of what you could do with Diablo 2, for it had eight player coop.

The itemization is a joke. Once epic and sought after legendary's like Windforce and Grandfather are replaced by blue and rare items. Legendary items are no longer a viable option for they are always outclassed by a blue or yellow. There are no skill trees, stat systems, or anything that old school Diablo 1 and 2 players may remember.

After hitting 60, and beating the Hell difficulty mode, you are thrown into a mode called Inferno. Inferno makes it almost downright impossible to conquer without purchasing items that other players who found exploits early and profited from it on the gold currency auction house. In inferno, coming from Hell, you can expect to get two shotted by almost anything. Act 1 inferno is a rough thing to beat, but if you can manage to survive and farm it, the drops you will receive have no benefit what so ever towards the impossible brick wall that is Act 2 inferno. The progression of loot and drops vs the severity of challenge and impossibilities that lay ahead are overwhelming for most classes, where as wizard's and demon hunters can face-roll up to act 4 with little, if any, good gear.

The in game crafting system, blacksmiths, is an absolute joke. It skips item levels, and doesn't really provide you with anything worth investing in. From personal experience, I have sank almost all my gold into my crafting systems and I have yet to make anything that is even viable for Inferno.

All and all, Blizzard did not deliver a addition to one of they're most loved franchises, but a mere insult to old fans intelligence levels. If you haven't bought the game yet, and are a fan of D1, D2, or D2:LOD, I highly suggest you stay away from this game. Blizzard tried to reinvent the genre, and the franchise by not listening to the fans and making horrible design decisions, most likely biased off of the successive history of World of Warcraft.

2/10. Never buying another Blizzard product.
