Aside from the connection issues which are still cropping up every now and again this is an excellent game. The production values are outstanding. It is extremely fun to play alone, and fantastic with a group of friends. That's really all that should matter in a review of a game. I feel sorry for people who are unable to play due to connection issues, it's not fair and Blizzard should do something to compensate them. That said, it's a separate issue and should not effect the score here. It is no longer just a single player game and the online only requirement is a necessary evil that shouldn't make any difference to most people. The animation, visual effects, story and atmosphere are some of the very best ever created, and certainly the best in this genre. It's a great game that will undoubtedly become a classic regardless of this bumpy start, and I guarantee every reviewer here trying to punish Blizzard by giving them bad scores will soon enough be playing and enjoying it themselves. So do yourself a favour, buy it, play it and enjoy yourself. Expand

Fun game, but with dumbed down skill system. I vote for 8 if blizzard can handle server request, but with all these isues i set for 6. I play Torchlight 2 beta and it is almost same fun but with better skill systems and good characters and finnaly game is with lan support and non-online single.

The Diablo franchise has now been reduced to a shameless & soulless cash cow and a slap in the face to all to the fan-base, his is not the game the loyal fans deserved after 12 years of dedication & loyalty.

They made it worst - it is not even a poor action RPG, it is an arcade - you are not even poorly building up your char. I looked on achievements list and there was one - get 2 monks 2 level 60. Hah - why should i do that? To have 2 identical characters? Dont get me starting on the linearity of the story and the total lack of any illusion of choice. All those negative reviews are all about "no sp, can't login." They only had probelms with the login server on the release date. The game is really beautiful, the cutscenes are awesome (Blizzard has always done awesome cutscenes). IMO The graphics are fine and the gameplay has been improved. There is nothing else to say but "BUY IT".

    - level of difficulty irritates with imbalance, normal monsters are too easy (except for annoying situations when they appear out of nowhere, or from behind), while the champion packs with an unfavorable configuration (eg, jailer / mortar for characters attacking from a distance, or vampiric / shielding for melee characters) are so annoying that discourage to the game - for me, running 15 minutes in a circle leaving traps to kill them is not the challenge, it's only a nuisance,
    - lack of a decent chat just embarrassing.
    - turning off servers on Sunday afternoon (and on premiere day) show clearly that Blizz doesn't care for customers at all.
The weakest in the history of Blizzard's games, not worth buying.

Firstly; Connection issues. Its been a little more than a decade since the last Diablo game. How on earth can anyone expect the servers to remain stable with the disgusting amount of people logging on to play. These issues will resolve themselves (And don't give me that nonsense about expecting a game to work immediately). Secondly, character customization. What the hell were you expecting to look at from a top down game!? Who cares about customization when you CAN'T see what you've potentially customized. I would go on to talk about some other issues but its pretty much just children who are butthurt from not getting to play within an hour of getting Diablo 3 and other tiny issues that didn't appease their niche wants and needs.

    Now, to review the game.

Graphics: I wasn't expecting everything to be made of Diamonds and for my eyes to get a massage by beautiful Asian masseuses so I was not disappointed on any fronts. In fact. The Graphics are pretty damn hot. No complaints

Story: What do you expect from a fantasy dungeon-crawling loot game. Fun and compelling story with some kick arse cut-scenes (A particular favorite is at the beginning of Act 2 where to Angels "discuss" their differences)

Gameplay: I was never attracted to this style of game, thus I never played Diablo 1 or 2. I got this game because of the hype and this being the first top down RPG I've played, it certainly has not disappointed me and is a great incentive to try other top down RPGs. The combat is dynamic and smooth with some very nice effects from spells. Lots of spells and abilities that can be utilized by the different classes, ranging from hacking demons to bits with axes to blasting them back to oblivion in particle form using huge orange beams of death from the Wizard. Lots of other abilities to explore from the other classes. I hear Demon Hunters can use duel wielding, rapid fire crossbows (Not sure how that works but oh well) to rain death down upon your foes. I've yet to try about the voodoo abilities available as well as the super-fast Monk class.

Sounds: Not much to talk about here. As always, Blizzard does not hold back. lovely original orchestral soundtrack. Really adds to the atmosphere during cut-scenes.

Lasting appeal: I haven't finished the campaign yet but Im expecting to play through it 4 more times with the different classes. Great replay value as far as I can tell and is a game that will stick with you for a long time.

    Closing Comments (Stealing from IGN):

A very well built game with no major design flaws or game-killing bugs. Some lovely graphics and gameplay coupled with an intense story and characters leads to a game that has thoroughly destroyed any chance of me passing my A levels

Normal magic stuff is more powerful than legendary, classes badly miss matched, bosses easy, some elites unbelievable, no sense of leveling, music isn't what it was in D2. Plot isn't worth mentioning. Actually the music is very bad at points and ok-ish at others...

On the other side. It's got ok graphics - too bright, but ok. It's got interesting places (which would require better music though).

Gameplay wise, Diablo 3 definitely achieves what it set out too. The combat is fast, visceral and an awful lot of fun. The character classes are diverse and the abilities and loot come as thick and fast as you could wish. Areas and enemies alike are diverse and it is constantly a pleasure to gaze upon a new environment as you peel away at the fog of war.

Areas and enemies alike are diverse and it is constantly a pleasure to gaze upon a new environment as you peel away at the fog of war.
The Acts of the game are enjoyable and while the story is certainly formulaic, it provides enough traction to keep you going through the thousands of demons you will slay.

Multiplayer and the various difficulty levels also give great incentive to come back, although ultimately the majority of game owners are not likely to keep going with the game past a couple of play through's.

It's such a shame then that such a compelling package has been forced into a completely flawed distribution system. While the game its self is great, the fact that it is completely unplayable without being logged into Blizzards battle.net system ruins the immersion. For a single-player game at it's heart, to have lag and even be kicked out of your ongoing game because of a connection issue is not acceptable in this day and age.

What truly is the straw that breaks the camels back however, is the very poor customer service from Blizzard. Since launch the game has been plagued by lack-luster server stability and poor resource management meaning thousands were unable to play. Furthermore at time of writing the Blizzard servers are down again and the official word on the forums is "no word yet on a fix". For a company that runs the most successful MMO in history, such poor infrastructure and customer service can only be the result of poor management. While these problems may be fixed in the future; as a game it works but right now Diablo 3 is a resounding failure as a product.

I have to admit I've never played Diablo 1 or 2. Gave this a try because of all the hype and anticipation. I picked up Torchlight when it came out, and this is almost the same game. And yes, I know Torchlight was a Diablo clone, but the difference is that Torchlight came out over 2 years ago, and cost a third of what Diablo 3 costs. And in some ways, Torchlight is a better game. Items seem to have a more profound effect, sound, music, and graphics have more character, and you have choices when you level up. The lack of persistent choices, and limitations on the number of active abilities, is particularly bewildering. Admitted, I'm still at a pretty early level, but it doesn't seem like these aspects will improve very much.

As for the cash store, it doesn't really bother me. After all, it's largely a single player game, so if someone wants to spend money on gear, it's no skin off my back. In fact, the idea of being able to sell stuff for real money is alluring. However, Blizzard keeps comparing the anticipated market to WoW, and I have trouble imagining a large market for items in a non-MMO. Acquiring top-level gear in an MMO is difficult, and by design, the game never ends so there is always a market. I don't foresee Diablo III being so infinitely playable, nor your achievements and gear being so visible and important to other players, so why would anyone spend money on it?

I also wonder why people gave the game such horrible reviews, and I think I know why. Because they expected D3 to be a revolutionary game, like D1 and D2 were. It's not, but it's still a good game.

There are some problems with it, but most of them aren't actually related to the gameplay. Logging in during the first 24 hours of release took at least 10 minutes (first login took me 1 hour) and the AH didn't work a few times. I'm not really bothered by the game being online only, because I want to use the AH (no, not the RMAH). And why are people bothered by pay to win? If you don't want to do it - don't do it. Why are you so bothered by this ? It ensures the game will stay constantly updated.

The sounds and voice acting are awesome, and the discussions between the character and follower / other characters in the game are sometimes very funny.

About the graphics - I find them quite good for this type of game. They definitely could have been better, but I have no complaints here.
About the graphic style - I've noticed people saying it's doesn't have the style of previous Diablo games. Well, I beg to differ. The gore-ish style of previous diablo's is actually enhanced, but not necessarily by the graphics style alone, but by the atmosphere in general.

If someone looks at the end area of act 3, with the pool of blood, and 2 chained demons screaming, accompanied by the comments of the spider demon, and tell me with a straight face that it's not gore-ish enough, I wouldn't know what to reply. And there are more similarly gore-ish zones.

The skills are quite nice, there is no skill tree, but people don't understand that the challenge in D3 is picking 6 skills + one of their runes (and each rune has a use in certain situations) out of ~30 skills, each with 5 runes. Playing with a barbarian I really wanted to have both the damage and life buff, but I couldn't afford to sacrifice any other skill, so I went with the life buff.

I only knew it is about fighting monsters, gathering loot and so on. The way gameplay is made is kinda... weird, to be honest. First you obtain an account on so-called battle.net, then you use it to log-in in game. After you do it, monster cards begin to appear, each in nice rectangular frame and labelled with name like "error 37" or so. They also have a nice flavor text. If they appear it means that you have logged too slow and the monster has won. There is quite a variety of enemies, varying in effects and how quickly they kill. The 37 is most common one. 10001 tends to spawn along with 3000008. 12 is a fun one, requires the player to change his "build" in options menu. If the player manages to kill the monster, they can create a character (which is werid, shouldn't it be done BEFORE the actual fight?), and they can take it to fight with other cards. I have yet to beat 3004 and 3006, those are nasty. Balance is weird. 33 is unbeatable. 37 is very common one, easy to beat with typing quick enough. 300008 is rare and weak. I would have nothing against the number indicating how powerful is the encountered mob. 33 is close to 37 and yet they are completely diffrent.

Overall I am not sure if I like this novel approach to card-based gameplay, but hey, thats Blizzard. Those guys surely know how to make a good game. In the end, however, the point of a review is to tell how much reviewer likes the game and its particular aspects. Gameplay gets 2 big, bad 2 for me - unique for sure, but in the end boring. Quite time consuming, too, and I don't feel any sense of progress, though, beating a 10001 feels good for sure!

Graphics are nice, there is an animated background. It does not fit the fighting errors theme, I think something more related to computers would be better. The same can be said about music. 6 for both - Nice, but not fitting.

It is said that the game has some form of multiplayer - I don't really understand how to use it.

So, in the end: unique card game which is quite hard to understand properly. Massive flaws in balance of particular cards, also gets boring after some time.

If you want a fantastic RPG with gorgeous graphics with awesome story telling stay with Skyrim but if you want 100 miles per hour non stop action this is the game for you. For anyone who put a review on this before Tuesday afternoon should realise that a company like Blizzard have the right to protect its games from pirates like Pirate Bay etc and they give no free ride so they can make the best MMO, ARPG and Strategy games around. The combat is awesome, the skills integrate nicely into it, and the environments are really interesting, varied and are visually impressive. There is also a huge amount of replayability with the different class variations and also through difficulty levels and new loot/items that continue to scale with your level no matter which difficulty you are playing. The downsides for me are the animation style which, instead of having the gritty look of previous Diablo games, looks more like something out of Warcraft - I assume this was intentional in order to entice WoW players - and the character models are quite poor; the voice-over is also quite cheesy and so again not in keeping with the tone of the previous games - a tone which I wish that they had maintained. However, these are generally fairly small complaints and overall I've had a huge amount of fun. As a result I'm really looking forward to playing again with a new class.

All that aside, I think the server issues have been totally unacceptable, and are the reason I give this game an 8 and not a 9. I would have been willing to accept the requirement of a constant server connection during gameplay, so long as it did not interfere with the game itself or your ability to play it. However, this has obviously not been the reality: the debacle that was the game's launch does not need any explanation, and even several days following its release I still experience laggy gameplay - something that should absolutely NOT happen during a single-player gaming experience. And as I am writing this, the Blizzard servers are currently down due to an "issue with the Battle.net service". The fact that this now prevents me from playing the game (on single-player) altogether is totally unacceptable and Blizzard should be compensating people in some way for releasing a product that clearly does not work properly or function as advertised.

Blizzard has no argument to have this crappy kind of servers. They knew the problems were there, they have experienced engineers that are capable of building good servers (They should have them atleast, or atleast the ability to hire them).
The new system (compared to diablo 2) is both better and worse. I hate it that I can't see stats of all the special attacks. It only has some vague explanation what they do. Most of the time you pick a set of skills and stick with them. There is no real need to switch.
The auction system makes the game a complete imbalance. You can get awesome gems at the first point you get accces to socceted items, so at lvl 25 you can have +200 on a single stat with gems.

Yes, the servers were a little unstable for the first few hours, but now the servers are fine and the game is very playable and extremely fun. Diablo III is a perfect balance of simplicity and complication. Its easy enough for a casual player to get on and really enjoy the game while also customizable enough for skilled players to min/max and experiment for the best results with interesting choices. With the new inferno difficulty level those skilled players will be put to the test like never before. The atmosphere and story of the game is well done and Blizzard has done a very good job supplementing the game with many pieces of information and dialogues that get new players up to speed in this epic trilogy's tale. Once again, don't believe most these bad reviewers as more than likely many of them are playing right now and are for some silly reason allowing their uniformed minor disappointment to discourage other people from playing this gem of a game. You can't play the game offline, even if you just want to play single player. I've been stuck in the same dungeon for hours because I keep getting disconnected and have to start back at a checkpoint. I can't save. I don't care if they fix their server problems, my network drops occasionally. I don't care that my network occasionally drops. That shouldn't be a problem for a single player game. But it is for this one. Don't get me wrong, the Blizzard servers aren't coping, but even if they were I'd feel ripped off. If they somehow patch this to allow for offline single player I'd give this game maybe 8/10? Maybe 8.5 (based on the few sessions where I've been able to play for a while without getting dropped).

    Sound 6 out of 10
On both our machines (my wife is playing as well) we experienced unbalanced sound. Sometimes the voices are loud and clear and sometimes you cant hear what NPCs are saying. I also had to change the effects level down to 25 percent in order to hear a bit from everything. What you hear is average. The music mostly known from Diablo II and some tracks sound like theyre taken straight from WoW. Everything fits though so no big deal. Only negatives are the voice actors and recordings from the angels...they sound like speaking into a bucket. Not really speaking freely more like reading into a bucket.

    Gameplay 8 out of 10
This is simple. Once you found the class that suits you the game is pure fun. If you liked Diablo I & II you will like Diablo III as well. Theres 2 reasons for me though why it aint got a 10 out of 10.
When you level up for the first time you'll notice you dont get any points to spend. This kills a lot for me. In Diablo II for example I could create any character that I want. Just put some strength to your mage and he can weild a 2 handed axe. In Diablo III the axe is simply not available for your wizard and you cant spend any points. Want to create the ultimate dodging barbarian? Sorry but you cant. I dont see why this got removed. I find it kinda sad that theres a trend to games that everything is automatically done for you while spending points on your character is one main feature of a true role playing game. In Diablo III you cant do anything wrong but you cant do anything better either.
The second point is the online single player. Although youre playing alone you have to queue for a server slot? When you get one you might still experience lag as data is permanently sent and synchronized in the background. This is a no go in my opinion.

Normally this would lead to 7 out of 10 review but there are so many things wrong with the game at the moment.

-315300 possible errors that you can get.
-No free server slots (for your single player game!)
-No access to the game when battlenet is on maintenance.
-Auction house problems bugs and bad design.
-Bugged Achievements (everybody loves achievements :D)
-The well known non-existent customer support from Blizzard.
-Faulty CDs when you didnt buy it online.
-Faulty installers when you bought it online.
-No cow level...ok the Cow King is there but he takes you to Care-Bears LSD trip level where you slay rainbows and unicorns O_o'
-Real money auction house will end up in items only being available for real money. Who is responsible for droprates? Who earns money with every single sale? Blizzard! I guess this model will lead us into a new era of gaming models where you pay for virtual goods. And who tells us that Blizzard themselves wont put auctions on there for real money?

Overall its an unfinished product in my opinion and thus it gets 0 out of 10 from me. Dont get me wrong its an awesome game but the only power that we have (I doubt that Blizzard will care) is to let our frustration out in some way and if that means 0 points for a great game than thats your part you can do.
Lets see how long it takes them to finish the game but knowing Blizzard it will take loooong. Its a great game dont get me wrong but it needs to be finished fast.
If you buy a new car and it has as many faulty parts as this game you simply return it and ask for a new one. With software its different since you cant return it and Blizzard doesnt have a new one, all their versions are faulty ;)

Low rating for no skill tree/lack of customization? - Ignorant to the 'elective mode' option. Which allows you full customization of your skills which you can change ANYTIME on the fly. This also allows you to try a wacky character build without having to create and level a character from scratch to find out it's not very good.

And what a surprise that was. Pixelated, somewhat colorful graphics, no gruesome dying animations and magic items that would drop very rarely and not be as interesting as those in Diablo 1. But... over time and thanks to a couple of patches that fixed the item drop rate, I got to appreciate at least the basic gameplay. Still... not nearly as good as the first one.
And now... Diablo 3. The disaster has been long in the making. For one thing, even less impressive graphics for its time than Diablo 2. Even more stylized. No dying animations at all, just crappy rag doll **** AND the world's most awful DRM: always on.
At least one person here is complaining about people bashing new mainstream games. Well... that's because they suck! Every single one of them that gets very low ratings has screwed up something in at least one major way. I actually find it very disappointing that e.g. that bug-ridden, visually pretty unimpressive Skyrim still got fairly high ratings. It is GOOD when people fight against the **** that is being produced increasingly these days! And you know what people should do instead of only rating it low? Not even buy such pieces of crap! A lot of depth that will not even become available to you until you are 20+ hrs into the game. I've only played it for 8 hrs but that was enough to get a feel for the barbarian class. If you like these kinds of games then this is more of the same with an added dash of love and awesomeness. The challenge does ramp up and yes it's a clickfest and gear stat driven game, but it works and the story is good enough to pull you along. Voice acting is spot on. Music is incredible. The amount of variation in level design and enemy design is VERY VERY good for how rich and detailed the game world is. especially compared to other aRPGs. I am knocking off 1 point for the painful release servers and another point for the annoying always-online DRM, but would quickly add back 1 point if the latency I was getting wasn't > 200 ms with some noticeable server stutter at times (this is more likely due to me being in Australia and having to play on 'the Americas' servers... than anything wrong with the netcode which seems fine. I actually hardly notice the latency except maybe once or twice an hour).

Auction house is very easy to use, has good search functionality and I was able to sell equipment and buy stuff that I wanted easily. Very fluid system. No issues. I think this adds great replayability and what not to the game. Also the ability to created socketed items and move the gems around is really nice as I'm no longer worried about breaking gems and losing things that took forever to earn. Also this is really good for creating alts as you'll be able to start them with a set of full socketed gear to give them a huge DPS advantage in the early levels and get through it quick.

Achievements are not normally my thing, but in a game like this they feel akin to the achievements in TF2, where you've always got something random to work towards and it's just another fun diversion during the chaos of battle.

Dungeon design - I am IN LOVE with the dungeon design. The worst dungeon design i have seen in my life was Dragon Age 2. Bioware, play this game, they have randomly generated dungeons with repeated art assets and I'm YET to feel like I'm in the same dungeon ever. Nailed it Blizzard! Halls of Agony were EXCELLENT.

Multiplayer - easy enough to get into, found my friends nicely. Works. No issues.

    9/10.

I do not get all the haters out there.. if you dont like it you probably didnt buy it so dont rate.. because you did not play it!?

Diablo 3 has been designed to be a cloud-based game from the start, and yet people are whining like pathetic children as if they only just learned about it today. For people who hate always online systems, they sure seem to love putting money into them.

Not only that but many are complaining that the game is "unplayable." I'm sorry, was Blizzard unable to let you play for a small handful of hours out of the years of time to play it following launch? That must be awful!

Enough of that though. On to the good. Diablo 3 presents a remarkably satisfying art style. It's clean, ambient, and provides just the right amount of gore for a good hack and slash experience. Despite being slightly cartoonish it still provides a dark feeling in many areas.

The combat is superb. Blizzard has perfected it from the previous games, streamlining it. You simply form your preferred build and go at it. There's no worries investing points into an ability you'll never use, or putting points into abilities just to find out what they're like only to learn you're stuck with them. There's also a nice balance between damage, utility and defence. The new resource sytems also help separate D3 from other dungeon crawlers.

The story was rather underwhelming to be honest. It felt very anti-climactic in several scenes that should have been very dramatic. Still, it wasn't bad. Just not amazing. However the music and cinematics were absolutely fantastic. Blizzard once again lives up to being the best developer ever in terms of cinematics.

Overall I'd give it 9/10, but I'll make it 10 to counterract the idiots giving it 0.

Things are changing, that's the most important thing, that make our world not a boring place. Same I thought about D3. I would be really disappointed, if D3 would have the same game mechanics as there was in D2, just only refreshing graphics and story. I would be really disappointed, if D3 would have the same game mechanics as there was in D2, just only refreshing graphics and story. DRM and permanently Internet-Con, no LAN, well that could have a better solution, like an offline mode. Well, let's talk about the In-Game situations:
I like the world, you've been set into. The varied environment, landscapes and dungeons supports your game progress visually (forests, swamps, desert, hell,...) and the intermezzos with the NPC and little chats between you and your fellow are refreshing ways of keeping away the sometime monotonously "hack, slay, loot!". Apropos, let's talk about the new way to skill your char. At the first time, I was wondering how you can skill your individual char, like in D2, where you'd have to choose the skills you want out of (mostly) two from three main groups available, when you can have all skills just to pick in six slots? After continuing the game, this new system helps me to try out, what skill combination fits , because it allows you to experiment (let me see this one. Mhh, not good, or maybe this here...) and to adept to some sort of enemies (first a combo for mass-destruction, and then switch to a combo for a single Boss) . That was a great defect in D2, especially in Nightmare and Hell. But my question still remains: How can I create a unique char, and a second char of the same class but with an other style? Well, at my point of view it's impossible and that discourage you to make an second char at the same class and to play the game with it once more (for 4 times!). Blizzard should have combine this out of D2 and D3. Combine every skill your want, but all skills are divided in 3 groups, and at the begin you have to choose one (and in Hell a second one). My last point ist the story. It ist very difficult to make a story, that keeps you play-through and play-through and play-through and play-through. In most cases the story is good and ok. But I think, in a game, that's designed to play it through over and over again you can not choose a story-plot that has a intense punchline with the intention to enforce an end like: There must be a Final with Diablo in Diablo (1,2 or 3). Act 1-3 is like the story in D2, but Act 4, I mean, the story that directs you to Act 4 had discouraged me to play it again, not for ever, but I'll take a brake - maybe the aftermath of Mass Effect 3 -

Gameplay: D3 is a snooze fest. As a wizard, my gameplay consisted of click right mouse button until mana runs out, then click LMB, until mana recharges. Occasionally break up the button clicking by pressing 1 for diamond skin, and 2 to force push everything back. But 90% is just clicking two mouse buttons. I have been playing for over 10 hours now, and am about to uninstall. Some people say if you hang in long enough, it gets really good. If I have to play for over 10 hours to get to the good stuff, then I think it is perfectly fair to consider the game sub-par, and not worth my time.

Visuals: Escapist Magazine had a great article on graphics vs aesthetics. But neither the graphics nor aesthetics fit a supposedly dark and mature game. The outdated, cartoony look was unimpressive, and did nothing for immersion into the game world. It seemed as though Blizzard wanted to continue the Diablo tradition of "rewarding" players for trudging through the monotony, with highly-detailed cutscenes. I suppose that's easier to do, when the majority of the game has1st-gen Playstation 2 graphics. Story: The story is nothing inspired. Typical good vs demons trying to conquer creation. Voice acting was adequate, yet not memorable.

Customization: Almost non-existent, and hardly relevant, when it popped up. You can't alter your character's appearance (aside from which equipment you wear), and your choices for which skills to level, are very limited.

Other annoyances: No ability to save your game. Your game saves online, when you reach a checkpoint, and you can only resume from your last checkpoint. Checkpoints aren't terribly rare, but if you have a real life to get back to, the lack of being able to save on the spot, is very annoying. I thought games evolved past that old forced-checkpoint formula, at this point. Speaking of which, I still don't like having to play a single-player game, with an always-on internet connection. Most gamers don't. And yet developers like Blizz insist on forcing these restrictions on us, knowing they will be unpopular choices. Fighting piracy has always been a poor excuse for punishing legitimate consumers. But I suppose professional integrity doesn't make you rich.

Blizzard has coyly stated that they aren't sure if they will port the game to console or not. Total B.S. I know a console game when I play one, and D3 is as console oriented, as any. It's not a matter of "if", but "when" will they do the port.

Not worth $60. Maybe worth renting, when the console port ships.

Where are the randomly generated maps that gave us years of replay value? Diablo 2 required us to specialize within one character class. The result was a variety of builds for Barbarian, Sorceress, etc. Now, every class can redistribute skills at any time. Every character is a jack-of-all-trades within its class. Sorry, that's boring. Every Barbarian is the same. Every Wizard is the same. Etc. You could argue that specialization is limiting and therefor boring, but there's an answer. DEVELOP THE SPECIALIZATIONS MORE DEEPLY! There are further missteps within the game like the lack of difficulty, the brevity of the game (you can clear the game in one sitting as monk at normal difficulty) and the constant barrage of annoying cinematics. I can't list everything here, but I have to mention the complete nerf-ing of teleport. The skill is a pathetic, insulting shadow of what it used to be. You can't go through walls and it has a 15 second cool down. I'll leave it at that. I feel like Diablo died with Diablo 2. We have something like when Jerry Bruckheimer destroyed the Batman franchise. It was still a Batman movie, but it was also a colorful, hot mess that missed the point of what was great about Tim Burton's darker, clever Batman movie. Ok, so to start - unfortunately Blizzard screwed one of their best Universes up, the story-line is weak as never before. The character development is bizarre, slow and, at the end, just getting boring. The quality of items/artifacts is low e.g. at the end you don't really get any differences between an ordinary stuff and a sword... So the gameplay is screwed as well. Perhaps, more like 85% but I give it a Blizzard bump bc Blizzard is usually a quality-game developer. Hence, I think this game deserves a 90%. Expand

I've played about 5 hours now and overall I'm rather disappointed though: twice I've been bounced of the server, once because it was being shutdown and once because it was being patched. Right now I bounced of an error 37 about 10 times before getting into a 53 minute queue to get into the game.

If you want to get this game, wait a month before the servers are up to scratch. Right now it is just a massive disappointment, made worse by having had a taste and wanting more.

The game-play was completely dumbed down to the point that a trained chimpanzee could complete the game without any problems, the graphics look as though they were taken out of WoW and darkened slightly. As I feared, Blizzard have forgotten how to make a game that is not the hugely successful WoW. Diablo 3 is a huge let down for anyone who has ever played either Diablo or Diablo 2, and I, in all honesty, cannot see how it would attract new players (aside from those who fell into the hype). I won't be a fool and say Blizzard "owned us" a great game, after this long of a wait, but after waiting for eleven years, expectations were high. They were met with Starcraft II, and they were simply destroyed with Diablo 3. It is as disappointing a game as you will ever find, and there is absolutely no way I am ever going to fall in love with it. For those reasons, my rating is a solid zero. Expand

Although this is my personal opinion, the game seems to be getting a LOT of hate, with little justification. I hope you guys enjoy it!

I've read the negative reviews here before playing Diablo 3, and after playing through the first act, I have to ask those who give a zero score: Are you serious? Wow. Wow. If you honestly think this game has no connection to the previous games or that it pretty damn terrific, you're a victim of hyping your expectations in the stratosphere. No game other than the one in your imaginations could have satisfied you.

I agree that the online-single-player component has to go. It stinks. It really stinks. But this iteration of the Diablo series is terrific. Not perfect, but no game is. It's far, far from a zero-through-five rating, though. It has the darkness of the first Diablo, but it also has some mechanics from WoW. I played WoW and it was OK, but I didn't think it was worth the monthly charge. Some of its mechanics are perfectly in place with Diablo. It's not intrusive. If you've played the other Diablo games, it fits right in. It's an evolution of the system.

Which brings me to my next, tangential point: I would guess that most of the zero posters here were still puzzling out there multiplication tables when Diablo 2 came out. I was an adult when it was released and there was much nerd-rage at that time, too. Did you know the original Diablo 2 was 640x480 only... ONLY, when it was released? Imagine the nerd-rage over that fact, alone. It was explosive. There were no runes, and there was no Act 5. All this was changed a year later when LoD came out.

I'm not an apologist for Blizzard. I don't know them; they don't know me. But I do know that they screw up from time to time... and they correct it. Maybe the online-single-player thing will never go away, but maybe it will the next expansion. It's not THAT big of a deal. But the mechanics, the feel, and the length are very well done.

For those who have complained about the game being too short: Maybe. I haven't played through it all, yet. But I can tell those who haven't bought the game that there is a fair amount of exploration to be done and side-dungeons, which will extend play. If you want to blast through the game, you can. It's easy to do, even without any knowledge of what lies ahead -- just follow the road. But what lies off the road is what extends play. Frankly, Diablo 2 got a bit too long in places. I hated slogging through that jungle. Loved the game; hated the jungle act. I'm glad it's a bit more concise, now.

So, for those who are on the fence about Diablo 3, buy it. You won't be disappointed. The feel is more like Diablo 1 than Diablo 2 (in the first act, anyway). I like that. Contrary to some posts here, Diablo 3 is less "cartoon-y" than Diablo 2... and the graphics are waaaay better -- less chunky. The graphics are on par with Titan Quest, for instance. Not at all bad and probably necessarily not cutting-edge because of the amount of moving enemies on the screen. Technology has limitations where fevered fans' imaginations do not. Buy the game, maybe not the Collector's Edition, but it's well worth the money for a good romp in the world of Diablo again.

The graphics are so cheap and second rate, it looks like an indie studio of about 4 guys did the work on it. The characters are 2 dimensional and so hard to get behind it's laughable, so you almost wish it was a comedy. Oh and in terms of customization (the cornerstone of the RPG experience) forget about any deviation from what they decided your character will look like. And to top it all off, after paying $60 you can't even play it without getting kicked off every few minutes due to Blizzard mandating you stay online while you play. Why did they mandate this? So they could suck more money from you via the Auction house. Diablo 3 is gaming's Waterworld.

Graphics remind me of WoW more than of Diablo II, how come after 10 years I still prefer those graphics more than these in D III? Diablo III is just and average action RPG game that uses 'Diablo' brand name to sell more and more copies, that's what it is. Expand

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.
