Server and Lag issues. DRM > gaming experience. Missing key components standard in most RPGs today. Addressing just the server bugs and lag...

This should have been avoidable. Blizzard already runs the largest MMO on the planet, WoW. They also launched StarCraft II which required gamers to be connected to play Single Player and started with multiplayer from day one. That launch did not turn into the catastrophe Diablo III's did.

Blizzard's games have been intertwined with servers since the original Diablo and the launch of Battle.net. They're pretty much experts in this department by now.

Then there's the stress test and the pre-sales data. Either Blizzard rushed the launch of an already delayed game without the proper infrastructure in place, or the company made a bottom line call to just ignore the numbers. Either way, they totally dropped the ball. They apologized, but did so in a less than sincere way, with some jokes, and stating they thought they overshot the server stress-load estimate.

    Now, the DRM.

One commenter compared buying a video game to buying a car, while another said you cannot compare the two.

What makes this different than a car? I get to test-drive a car. And not just a piece of the car, the whole car. I can take it on the freeway, try out the AC, play with the gadgets, everything. Then, I can decide whether or not to buy it. If I do buy it and decide within so many days I don't like it, I usually can return it or exchange it, especially if it's brand new.

Diablo III on the other hand... I cannot really test play the game before launch. Even if I play the first couple of hours, I will be disappointed. I'll barely be able to touch the tip of crafting available, the battles will seem very mundane and repetitive, the story not all that compelling, the crypt and graveyard graphics a bit dull.

So, I buy the game. If I don't like it, I cannot return it. I cannot exchange it. $60 down the drain. I cannot even sell the game to someone else.

Many positive player reviews dismiss the negative ratings as simply disgruntled players who could not jump right into the game on midnight on launch day. But if you actually read those reviews, you'll find them littered with other complaintsâ

Second, the heart of a RPG is customization, somewhere down the line we lost this idea, and diablo is not the only game. Why would I play a game that I am exactly like everyone else, if you are a monk, guess what you are the same as the other thousand monks, yeah. At this point why even make it an RPG? I am not even starting on the other issues the game has, because I think they dropped the ball. The only problems I had for the other diablo games is the 5 point system, I thought they would improve it, not throw it out completely. I am sorry for those who like mindless game plan, like all on-line games, you will love this game. I come from a different generation, where RPG was sitting around a table with a pen and paper and you had to use your brain. There is nothing to this game, Please get away from multiplayer gaming. For once focus on single player. What did Blizzard do, I thought they were developing this game for awhile now, because it looks like they are a student doing a paper on the last day it is to be turned in. No thought, boring story, no customization, no intelligence, no game. If I could have given this game a negative ten I would have, and one more thing, I enjoyed the music until it made me remember how good diablo once was, and then it pissed me off because it made me think there was no development at all, and I have to listen to music that makes the game seem better then it is!!!! As a longtime player of every non-WoW Blizzard game, as a honorable person, and as what I hope comes across as on honest gamer and game culture enthusiast, I have to say I am ashamed to call myself a player of Diablo III, based solely upon the complete unfairness and laughable immaturity of my fellow 'gamers'. I will admit freely that I have not completed the game. In fact, the meat of the game stretches before me like a long path filled with candy, hookers, and lots and lots of squishy undead and demons. But I can tell that this game... this wonderful epitome of what it means to be a dungeon-crawler with a solid story backing... will be enjoyable in its entirety. I cannot give this game a perfect ten until I get to the point where I have beaten the game. Now, as shown in the other user scores, the community is quite upset about the use of DRM and a server that is not on your PC to run every instance of this game. To explain this, here is an excellent quote from a good friend of mine:

"DRM sucks. Having to be connected to a server to play alone sucks. And thousands of people are complaining about that today... yet most of them don't understand why Blizzard doesn't offer offline play. They say it's to prevent piracy, when it's not.
Blizzard has to run servers for at least 10 years to support this game, as they know from their past franchises, for the (very popular) multiplayer component. It shouldn't be surprising they looked for a way to get some recurring revenue from the game so that the ongoing costs are covered by the people still playing it. Their solution was the real-money auction house.
To run a real-money auction house, they have to absolutely eliminate hacking and duping, or rare items won't be rare and there will be no incentive to create a robust market which Blizzard can earn money from. The only sure way to eliminate hacking and duping is to run D3 like an MMO... put everything on a server you don't control. You can hack your client all day long, but since your characters, the world, mob spawns and deaths, experience and loot are all generated and stored on the server, you can't cheat and create items.
There is no single player game. They never programmed one. To offer one at this point would be as much design and programming effort as creating Diablo 4. So don't expect there to ever be an offline patch for D3. When you play single player, you're just playing a multiplayer server instance that happens to only have one player in it."

Now, my only PC is a crappy laptop (a 'craptop', if you will), and as such I need to play the game on the absolute lowest graphical settings, and even then the game has crashed my PC once already. But you know what? This game still looks amazing when the graphics are just slightly above those of Diablo II. The cutscenes are as good as the stuff James Cameron puts out. The music is so similar to that of the original that I almost cried when I heard it. The story is excellent, on par with any and all of Blizzard's previous offerings. And, really, stop complaining that you're always online. You're a PC gamer in 2012. The internet is our reality. If you don't like it, fine. But at some point we have to realize that there are just some things we need to give up if we are to continue moving forwards as a gaming culture. In conclusion, I know that most people will hate on me for supporting this game. That's fine. That's part of expressing my opinion. But I cannot sit by and watch a stellar game get lambasted by bad reviews because of their attempt to cover their operating costs in a creative way. The could've charged a monthly fee for this game, I hope you all realize that.

This is Diablo 2 perfected. The new skill system is different but GREAT, no more wasting skill points on useless skills and no need to respec. Party system is very functional and all the server issues have been resolved (it was only released 4 days ago and i havent been booted since day 2). This is a MUST OWN for Diablo 2 fans.

So thanks for ruining another great franchise, activision / EA.

Its dark and oozes with character like no other game world I've known. The graphics are fantastic as well. 3) The Classes and the Loot: I really like the classes Diablo3 has. Sure, you get the classic Mage, Archer, Warrior type classes but these classes just look really cool and the armour sets are so varied it is insane. It take a lot for me to give a game a 9 but I am really enjoying it. The only thing I would complain about is that it is a very non-open world, but this is really just sticking with the same formula from past Diablo games. Also, in past Diablo games the dungeons were randomly generated which I thought was cool and added to the re-playability. I honestly don't know what all of these haters are thinking. The game is fun, stop nit picking and just chill and play the game. Blizzard has done a wonderful job with the game...video game expert and newbies can play this game which is really great from a marketing standpoint and makes it fun for everyone. Why cant we play it w/o internet connection and more important, why cant we save when we want.? When we managed to log in the game looked pretty ugly. Even with everything on high. Our character (we picked monk) was interesting. He didn't have any attributes to assign when u lvl up, he didn't have talent tree. Only skills to unlock when u gain a certain lvl. Whats the ''RPG'' part in it when the game does everything in auto-mode for u? Runes are boring. Increases damage for xy number. are u kidding me? AH is same as wow, except u can buy items for real money. so pretty much pay to win. we later found out that blizzard is taking pretty interesting cut from transactions. something like sneaky income. crafting is ok. although i doubt anyone will use those items later on and will farm stuff what they want. soundtrack. nothing much to say. its what u should expect - perfect. First off, I am a HUGE fan of the Diablo franchise. The first Diablo was my overall favorite game for several years when it came out. I have read all of the official Diablo series books, and most of my experiences with Blizzard and all of their previous games have been great. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Diablo 3.

The brunt of my complaints about this game lies in the structure of it. It was a tough pill to swallow, but I still got this game even knowing about the DRM. However, if I would have known about all of the server issues and restarts several times a day, in peak hours of the day, I would have not purchased this game. Also, the latency even when the servers are running "fine" is still pretty bad, and yes, because of the DRM that latency still affects all single player games as well, so you have now option but to deal with it. Putting all of that aside, let's look at how the game is when the servers ARE up and running fine. After playing through the majority of the story, I found the plot to be extremely dull. Everything that is considered to be a "pivot-able" moment just lacks any surprise. Even the worst of the Diablo paperback books have a much better storyline than this. The end result of this was that for the first time EVER, I actually got too bored to finish the main story of an action-RPG. I am in act 4 of the storyline and I really have lost all motivation to complete the game, it is THAT bad.

To help alleviate this boredom, I tried looking to join groups and play with others. Even though 95% of online players in Diablo 1 and 2 used "trainers" to beef up their character, I still found it fun to play alongside others. Looking to join games in Diablo 3 is a constant headache. Apparently, they changed the public game joining queue so that it makes you join a game with the least amount of players on it at a time. So if there are 500 people playing exactly where you are in the story, it will automatically make you join a game with only 1 other person in it, no matter how many times you try (Over 100 attempts for me). 95% of the time, that 1 other person is either afk or doesn't care that someone else joined. So I then thought, "maybe I will just invite friends to play with me, that way I can get a full game going". Then I realized that no 2 friends play through the game at the same pace, so if we are at the same spot today, we most likely won't be tomorrow, so there goes that idea...

So in the end, you can play multiplayer with one other random stranger, or you can play single player with the same connection dependance of playing a multiplayer game and complete with lag and random server shutdowns/restarts, even in peak hours. So you just have to hope that you aren't fighting a final boss of an act as the message "Server shutdown in 60 seconds" pops up. I am not much of a graphics guy so I don't really care if most people think it is outdated, games can still be great with sub-par graphics, so I didn't count off any points for that. The music is good, which is the only reason why I didn't give this game a "0". I also forgot to mention that if you have played "Titan Quest" before, 50% of the location surroundings and monsters will look familiar.

In conclusion, if you can bare the boring story, connection problems even in "single player", and deal with never being able to find a decent multiplayer game long enough, you will enjoy the soundtrack. I myself couldn't bare the torture all the way to the end... If I had the option to trade my key back in and get my money back, I would.

This is a fantastic improvement on the previous games. There has been significant overhaul to many of the in-game mechanics. You no longer have to pick what attribute points go where. Instead the character levels up in the manner that makes the most sense for their role in the battlefields. You do not have to worry about building a character that will not be playable because you made poor choices in the the previous levels. The game does not drop the hardest difficulty on you without preparation, Nightmare mode and beyond are not available until you can work your way into the greater challenge. The skill system no longer locks you into just one time choices that you have to pay to respec. Instead respecing is a change as you need it system now. This lets you see what works for you without having to reskill at a cost or even worse make a new character. Overall I would say this is a fun playing experience and is worth the buy.

Always-online DRM is terrible as it is, but it makes the game unplayable when the servers are down (which they have been alot). But, the real problem I have is with this single player having to be online. This makes the game glitch and stuttery which is a real pain in the *** if you are playing a class like the Barb or Monk. For example with my Barb sometimes I will try to use the charge or leap ability see my character move forward hit a lag spick and end up right where is was. The last thing I have a problem with is the battle mechanics. To be honest they suck horribly, there is some class customization but nothing like it was for D2. To me it feels like Blizzard just dumbed them down some anyone could play it easily. Remember this has an M rating so I was expecting this game to be geared more at the adult players which in my mind means making it a challenging game and one of the best ways to do this is to make the battle mechanics challenging which they are not.

So to sum it up this game held my interest for not even a week the lag and stutter graphs piss me of to no end and worst of all I always have to be online to play this "single player game". So my recommendation is to save your money and to buy this game.

    The Good:
    1. New graphics and skill animations look and sound beautiful
    2. Cut-scenes are excellent all around.
    3. New classes seem to be fairly balanced and interesting, for the time being (although knowing blizzard, I'm sure they'll change this soon enough).

    The Bad:
    1. Always have to be connected, not just to the internet, but to blizzards bug-ridden and lag-filled servers.
    2. Skill trees have been vastly simplified to the point where there is no real specialization of characters, ie one barbarian is the exact same as another (which GREATLY diminishes replay value, and make you feel like all you are doing is clicking instead of playing a unique character).
    3. Normal difficulty, especially Act 4, became too easy and repetitive. In Diablo 2, Act 4 created new problems with elemental damage. In Diablo 3, Act 4 is the same as Act 3 is the same as Act 2, and then the game ends.

Overall: While the graphics are much shinier, the gameplay actually took a step back (especially compared to other games currently on the market), and there is really limited replay value considering the only thing that differentiates one character from another is equipment, which just seems to be nothing but a shiny bunch of attribute points. I wouldn't recommend buying it until the price drops some.

Dont buy it. The grafics are not so good, the gameplay is kinda dead, you must play online for singleplayer, there are lags all the time, the game does not last so much, and so on .And if all that was not enough, there is a marketplace with real money, so you must pay more money to get the good stuff, since the game itself dont give you much rare/good itens...

mediocre at best. Gameplay is still fun, but the story and dialogue is forced and cheesy (too much machismo banter reminiscent of 90's kids TV shows). Starcraft II had great cutscenes and fully animated characters and faces. D3 has neither (good cutscenes are few and far between. In engine ones are horrible) so I have a hard time feeling a connection to the characters when I can't put amediocre at best. Starcraft II had great cutscenes and fully animated characters and faces. D3 has neither (good cutscenes are few and far between. SC1 had animated faces on their units in the 90s, and D3 has painted portraits? And I realize that there's an argument for "blizzard wants their games to run on crappy machines", but CnC 3 Tiberium Wars had WAY better graphics at max settings than D3 and it ran on my junky laptop with less than 300mb of total video memory on min settings. Argument invalid. There is also NO character customization; all attributes and skills are locked into direct paths. So basically, every level 19 wizard is the EXACT SAME as every other level 19 wizard. Since you can't customize your character's appearance either, this game hardly feels like an RPG because no two characters are really different. I don't think the "polish" on this game justified the development delays.

    SUM UP:
Always online requirement a pain in the ass (and causes horrible lag despite me having BF3-grade hardware)

Graphics are god awful for a game released in 2012. Really no legit excuse for a $60 game to look like this. Are they trying to market to gamers or third world countries?

Gameplay and mass slaughter is still fun as ever. interactive environments are well done, but they don't justify how generic the lack of character customization feels.

Story is terrible. The few CGI cutscenes are spectacular, but the rest of the in-engine cutscences and crappy dialogue ones don't suck me in at all. I feel no connection to the story whatsoever when it is told so poorly through half-assed cutscenes and cheesy dialogue. Voice acting is forced and sounds like it was taken out of a kid's TV show. Blizzard has CGI capabilities rivaling movie studios, so how they could be so bad at telling a story puzzles me. SCII proved blizzard knows very well how to do it better, so WHY DIDN'T THEY?

Verdict? Play Skyrim for a true RPG experience. This game is dumbed down even from D2 and a major disappointment.

Everything is simplified to the point playing is just following an arrow showing where to go and what to do. You don't even have to distribute your stats or plan what to build anymore, because you can re-spec your points anytime to suit your needs.

I think they really should go back to sprites (or maybe voxels). In my opinion, Diablo I and II looked awesome compared to this. Graphics were really grotesque. Now they're just same muddy polygon stuff like in every game.

The graphics are way less than acceptable... The real problem though is the leveling system you can't choose any skill points, spells or anything about your character other than their name, on top of that the cap is 60 and it takes no time to get there after the first difficulty your level thirty minimum.. Diablo 2 was a challenging game it took for ever to get to level 90 and above and that is what made it fun the game is about leveling and loot it doesn't work without both parts... turns out to be like thanks i'm level 60 now great that took 4ish days i guess i could start a new character but since it took so little time to get here is this even fun at this point. I really loved the idea of RMAH but once again what value do any items have if every eight-year-old and their mom can make it to the level cap without any effort, its certainly instant gratification for people who hate actually accomplishing things. Also I'm looking forward to the real cash AH, not that I'm thinking it'll make me rich beyond my wildest dreams, but because I do find it intriguing.

As far as gameplay goes, the game is fantastic. The amount of customization to the skillsets of the classes is very well thought out and makes tinkering with it for co-op or single play very interesting.

The graphics are very okay and despite all the whining about "horrible" graphics I think Blizzard has really set a great atmosphere with the painting-like textures and effects. I for one love it. Then again, I don't care for hyper realistic graphics anyway.

Overall the game gets a 9/10 from me, because despite it being very enjoyable and addictive, I still think there's a few minor issues that could've been resolved better. Like the launch and the servers being down all the time.

The skills system works very nice, really making you feel like you have choices. The runes add a nice touch really altering existing spells to make them seem fresh. Boss fights can be challenging but not to the point of extreme frustration. Each class has a good sense of identity and play style. Stays true to D2 while also improving on ways which make the gameplay smoother, and more casual friendly (to the dismay of many Diablo "purists")

Cons: Constant internet connection is a real downside. Can't really understand why you need it for a single player campaign. Initial launch days full of errors and disconnects which poorly suit a game based on checkpoints and map clearing, often forcing you to start from the last check point. Disconnects you if you are idle too long, so hope you dont get struck with a quick emergency and have to leave your game right before you finish a checkpoint. Lack of character customization really takes away from the feeling that your character is "yours" and not just a cookie cutter to play with (although variability in play styles for each character brings a sense of ownership to your char.)

All in all: This game is another example of why Blizzard is one of the most well respected publishers in the game. They really make sure they put out the best possible product while still staying true to the fans of each of their series. Just wish they had not forced you to have a constant internet connection, really the only reason to give it less then near perfect.

Things that people need to GTFO: Not being able to get a preorder. Basing reviews of a game only on the connection issues and not the game. Graphics which only the people with $5000 machines can play. Issues with the way the game is coded. Options that you wish had been in the game but aren't ( I wish they had flying purple unicorns in the game but they dont so "0/10".) Lack of skill points which are a thing of the past, many games are getting away from them in favor or variability in spells and difficult choices on which spells/skills to use. Basing reviews on how the Beta was. Crying because there are too many "WoW" similarities (Heaven forbid a company has similarities to one of their other games which is one of the most popular games in history.)

This is just another reason why having user reviews is a giant waste of time. Let unbiased game reviews/magazines let you know how good/bad a game was. Not cry baby fan boys. And yes that apparently means my own. *sad face*

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been waiting for Diablo 3 for six whole years. I am one of Diablo 2's greatest fans, and have literally spent quite possibly a thousand hours playing it. My hopes were high for Diablo 3. I was hoping for it to be like Diablo 2, but quite naturally I wanted some positive change also. It pains me to say this. It really does. But Diablo 3 has disappointed me. The game has been criticized for being 'dumbed-down'. And sadly, I have to agree:

    1. Why does my hero yell for my help every time his/her health is low? Why does the entire screen glow red for this purpose? Why does the tooltip on my health globe say 'Lose it all, and you're dead'. Is this primary school for RPG players?

    2. The quests are messy. Too often I'll be busy killing off a pack of monsters and the quest updates will complete one after the other without me knowing what I had to do or what I had completed. Simpler is better. Diablo 2 essentially had six quests in each act, and it was up to you to find out where to go. There where no arrows pointing the way on your mini map. No beacons indicating the location of your next quest. 'Enter the cave' is not a mini quest, or a useful guideline. It's Blizzard holding the player's hand, spoon feeding.

    3. It seems everyone in the game world keeps a journal, and none can be bothered keeping it safe. I do have the choice to pick up a journal, yes. But even so, I feel the lore in the game is too interfering. I cannot be bothered listening to the ramblings of a random character while I'm in the midst of a monster battle. Diablo 2 managed to have the lore on the side, for those bothered with the intricacies of it. I am not, and in Diablo 3 I sometimes feel it's shoved down my throat.

    4. The skill system. Oh, the skill system. What have you gone and done, Blizzard. The skill system ensures that every single Wizard character I will ever create will have the same skills available at the same level with the same options for supposedly 'customizing' them. Choosing between runes for a specific skill is NOT and will NEVER be 'customizing'. The idea of Diablo 2 was to allow the player to choose his or her skill, and how many points he or she wanted to attribute to it. What the hell was wrong with that system? I LIKE the fact that your choices were permanent. I LIKE the fact that you couldn't change it on a whim. Because that made you THINK about it beforehand. If you got it wrong the first time, you were smarter the next time. That was called progression. Diablo 3 does not open itself up to player skill. It seems that the only way I'll be any different to another Wizard is by the gear I have (which I can either craft myself or I can find in the game world - thus dependent on luck), or if that other Wizard had a different colour set of boots to mine. Because I can change my runes and skills to match his. How is that character customization? It's not.

    5. I am NOT a fan of the World-of-Warcraft esque graphics. I loved the gothic feel Diablo 2 had. Heck, even the font used in Diablo 2 was weird and fitting. In Diablo 2 it feels like Arial 14 or something. I don't get that excitement any more when a green item drops. It's just...missing. Why do the enemies glow red when I hover my cursor over them? Why? Why? Why? Why is the screen so busy? Why do I have a block of text to draw my attention to past conversations? Why does my character feel the need to tell me when he has slain 6 monsters with one shot that he is 'unstoppable'? And what was the idea behind the in-game cutscenes? They are choppy, uninspiring, boring, unnecessary, and just plain rubbish.

    6. DRM. If you haven't by now read about the incredibly frustrating/annoying/angering DRM issues in Diablo 3, let me sum it up: It's absolutely and unforgivably disgusting. Nothing says 'oops' like the moment you cannot play single player because the game servers are full. Nothing infuriates like internet lag in the middle of a boss-fight with the end result you having been slain because your spells weren't being cast. Nothing demoralizes you like the moment you are disconnected from your single player game because the network connection was dropped, and you have as a result lost some progress. For the small band of pirates you are defeating with DRM, Blizzard, you are angering a larger group of loyal, PAYING customers. Shame on you.
I have many gripes with Diablo 3. I worship its predecessor, Diablo 2. But sadly, Diablo 3 feels much more commercialized, much more casual gamer-friendly, much less addictive, much less taxing on the serious gamer's brain. The disappointment I have with this game is great. Waiting six years for a game and then being let down this badly is soulcrushing.

Tell me, if pokemon, halo or GTA had always online drm would you bend over and let them ass rape you as long as they put in an auction house? Screw D3 and the blizz fanboys. This game is unplayable because of DRM. I have 6Mbps ADSL Internet connection and pings in other games like 80-120ms. In D3 my average ping is of 600-1000. This is incredibly unplayable even at single player campaign.
I've wasted 60 euros just because Blizzard was a trusted company for me till here. I don't care about graphics and sound, i don't care about many years of development of that

However, the always online DRM restriction and the inclusion of the real money auction house force me to score this game based on how much I feel these two aspects negatively effect my game play experience. No matter what the fanboys say, Diablo has always been first and foremost a single player game, and Diablo 3 is no exception. The fact that I cannot play this game without an internet connection is completely unsatisfactory. I understand the reasoning behind it, but the bad outweighs the good by a very large margin. Besides the fact that there are other ways to accomplish what they are trying to accomplish (combating piracy and maintaining the legitimacy of items in the real money auction house) that don't include punishing legitimate customers. I think that people are for the most part being unfair and trying to hide their true motivations for giving Diablo 3 a low rating. The game play itself, graphics, sound and story delivers fairly well. However let's be honest, most people are angry about the always online DRM and the sorry state of the servers at launch, as they very much should be. This type of anti-consumer attitude from developers and publishers should not be tolerated by consumers. I know a boycott will never happen to the degree that it would need to to make Blizzard Activision listen, but hopefully all these terrible user reviews will make the bean counters that actually run things take pause and realize that perhaps this sort of thing is actually terrible for customer relations and WILL come back on them eventually. I also like to think that it's not actually the people creating the games that make these terrible business decisions, so we shouldn't necessarily be punishing them for the bad decisions their bosses make. However, SOMETHING needs to be done to stop these things form happening. It is ruining the game industry and the games that I know we all want to love... Expand

No. It works just fine. There are no random disconnects and no issues logging in anymore. ---Online DRM?--- Yeh it sucks, but unless you lived under a rock, you KNEW it was gonna be like this. Why do you act so surprised? Also, unlike other games with online-DRM, it actually serves a purpose here. The auction house, group games etc. Your saves are stored online aswell which is handy for when you want to play on more than 1 computer at a time. All I can say is, if you don't like it, deal with it.

---Pay to win auction house breaks the game herp derp---
Okay, seriously what the **** First you people complain it's a SINGLE PLAYER game which requires online connection, then you complain about some auction house? If you don't like it, don't use it. Who the hell cares? How does it affect you? If you only want to play single player, it doesn't have the slightest inpact on your gameplay. Again no reason to give this game a zero.

    ---Bad graphics---
What? First of all, the game has not "been in development for 12 years". They didn't start working on it the second they had finished D2. Second of all, the game looks amazing. It follows the Diablo style. Do you want realistic graphics? Play another game. Realistic is not the goal of this genre. The physics adds whole new level to Hack'n'Slash. ---Herp derp no talent trees and no customization---
Okay, ill say this even for those in the back to hear. THE DIABLO 2 TALENT SYSTEM WAS BROKEN. In oder to get a powerful character on higher levels you had to skip using skill points until levels 24-30. It was boring as hell. "Missclick? Too bad, no respec, make a new character." The solution was either to add option to redistribute the skill points, which would kill the skill system anyway, or to do what Blizzard did in this game, which is quite brilliant. You don't have to devote your character to 3-4 spells you max out and then do over and over again. You can change what you do anytime you want. Also and I can't stress this enough, the most amazing part is that most skills scale with weapon damage as well as the primary stats. It makes gear way more important for other than physical classes.

    ---Story---
Okay, it could've been better, but the cutscenes are amazing and it's not meant to be main reason to play a game like Diablo.

---It's too short! I beat it in 6 hours.---
Sigh. There are 5 classes and 4 difficulties. When you kill Diablo with 1st character on normal difficulty, the game doesn't end, it BEGINS at that very moment. You got to experience about 1-5% of what the game has to offer in terms of crafting, trading, mutliplayer, items, classes etc. Saying it's too short after 1st normal run-through is idiotic. It's like saying Couter Strike is short after finishing 10 games.

Again, even if you think those things are issue for you, this game deserves by no means a ****ing zero. Get real. How bad does any other game have to be for you to give it worse than 5.

If u played diablo 1, and diablo 2 and ur a diablo fan? dont think about playing this game because it will just make u angry.
it seems blizzard neglected all the good and unique features that made diablo II LoD one of the best games in history.
    1. No customize Skills + Artibbutes - this is really poor and ruine the game experience for me. blizzard aimed this game for 6 years old who dont need to think. u cant longer do customize and special chars (for exemple enchantress bear sorc on d2 :p).
    2. Party groups of only 4 ppl - really shame then instead of moving foward and making the game experience of interacting and playing with other people they move back to only 4 people partys.
    3. No game list like diablo 2- all the games are randomize and u cant enter a game for trading like on diablo 2.
    4. The trading experience is really bad now- u dont longer can have the great feeling of the trading in diablo 2 (trading low items junk for medium junk. medium junk into better items etc)- i remember i used to spend many nights by only trading junk to get better items.
    5. NO more world PVP feature - i wasnt a big fan of it but it was fun to duel people on world pvp, now u can only do WoW style pvp arena which is good but they neglected world pvp which was fun.
In conclusion, blizzard had 12 years to make the Diablo III and they wasted all this time of making a poor WoW 2. Diablo II is a game who stand the test of time and is still largly played by many people around the world this days, when diablo III in my opinion doesnt even stand the test of present time. its a truly sad day for diablo game series fans. take care.

Mindless clicking and collecting loot is all the game should be. Besides that, the FMV's and fluid gameplay is all the game really has going for it. The game is also much less buggy at launch than most other games being released today. As for the bad, graphics are passable for 2006 standards, sounds and voice acting are so-so, no talent trees like D2, no character body customization? wtf?, obviously the always online thing is a pain as well. My biggest problem with the game is that its a loot driven game and the auction house just about kills it. Rare items (yellow) can be bought for a very small amount. Decking out your character for a couple thousand gold makes the game much easier and the anticipation of getting loot from a boss is non-existent. There is no bind on equip (like WoW), so eventually the auction house will be flooded with every rare and possibly legendary item for slightly higher than vendor value as they're recycled. My friend and I pledged not to use the auction house anymore to keep the game in the state it was meant to be played.
Like Starcraft 2 at launch, this game is only worth half of what they're charging. I'm losing faith in Blizzard and Torchlight 2 will likely be a much better game all around, for only $20.

Blizzard have run with the theory that bigger is better, but when faced with an onslaught of thousands of items with an infinite array of properties the whole thing just becomes meaningless. And that's not even mentioning their despicable corporate attitude resulting in the ridiculous concept of single players being forced to play online at all times. This is a spectaculer fail, and a disappointing glimpse into the future of PC gaming.

Especially good game. Some kind of a relief among Call of Duty, Battlefield and other shooters. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't play Diablo I&II, but that doesn't interrupt the gameplay.

This is a great game, with an enormous potential that will make you play it years after you bought it. The gameplay is awesome, th UI is very well thought. Locations are a delight: vast, varied, vibrant with Diablo 1 gloomy and dark atmosphere. Multiplayer is great, I have never seen so addictive co-op. Looting, crafting and skill systems are full of great innovation and offer tonns of items, millions of skill combinations and an enormous potential where you can sink you gold into. Auction House is a very good feature for those who don't want to think too much about strategies and tactics at higher difficulty levels. So why all this hate? Let's analyze it step by step by looking at some major accusations. INNOVATION. This game IS innovative, but as much as it is necessary not to loose the Diablo style of game. COLORFUL. No, it's a return to good ol' Diablo dark atmosphere, without some colorful elements of Diablo 2. INTERNET ISSUES. I never ever had any latency issues in D3, except in the beta. NO SINGLE PLAYER... No comments on this. What kind of arguments are these people bringing in? Diablo III is great. Period. Yes, the release was a debacle - for a few hours, anyway, and only for basement-dwelling losers who simply couldn't wait until Tuesday morning to play the game. For the rest of us, it is a complete non-issue.

Of course Blizzard's servers couldn't handle the midnight launch, because this launch was an anomaly. D3's launch was like the release of The Avengers; you and everyone you know saw it Thursday night at midnight, just like everyone else. That has never, ever happened with the release of an online game, and Blizzard very reasonably expected only a fraction of everyone who pre-ordered the game to log in immediately. Buying and running enough servers to accommodate literally every person on the face of the planet who bought the game would be incredibly expensive, and merely hours after launch, all those extra servers would become totally unnecessary. So yes, the launch wasn't perfect, but it's not really fair to place all the blame on Blizzard either.

The game requires an internet connection at all times during play. Part of this is Blizzard's attempt at anti-piracy measures. Mostly it's just the way the game is structured. Do people complain about MMORPGs that don't have offline-modes? Of course they don't, because MMOs are built around online play. You know what Diablo III is built like? An MMORPG. It has a real-time auction house, for crying out loud. Yes, the other Diablo games set a precedent for being offline single-player games with online options, but that was over a decade ago, and this is now, and D3 is not a single-player game. It is a multiplayer game with a single-player option, and as far as I'm concerned, that's perfectly fine. I'll be honest, I've never had much fun playing Diablo or Diablo II offline. For me they were mostly boring games that only became fun when other people were involved, and I don't think my experience is terribly unique.

So how is Diablo III? Pretty awesome. The graphics aren't cutting edge, but they're certainly not terrible, and the game will run on just about any computer, meaning more people to play with; it's the same strategy Blizzard has been using with WoW for years, and so far, it seems to work. For the nostalgic types, yes, the game is still isometric, items and gold still make the same noises when they drop, and for the most part, Blizzard has very skillfully refined and updated the gameplay formula that made the previous Diablo games so much fun, without ever losing the spirit of it. Each class is unique and fun to play, the variety of gear is mind-boggling, leveling feels faster and more rewarding, and the skills and skill runes make classes far, far more customizable than they were previously. Even wailing on monsters in this game feels better than it did before (and it looks and sounds better too).

All in all, Diablo III is a fun game, especially if you have friends. It's definitely a step in the more casual direction compared to its predecessors, but that just means it's different, not inherently bad. If you like dungeon-crawling old-school RPGs, you'll like Diablo III. You could certainly be doing worse things with your time, like Denial-of-Service attacking an online game server at its midnight launch or writing ultra-negative reviews of said game based solely on your own ignorance.

Cons: Very shallow level of player customization (you customize with gear which is generally a product of luck+number of hours played, you customize with limited skill selection... but a whole customization angle, stat point allocation, is done automatically - a little hand-holdy for my liking and rules out some player decisions and custom builds); The dark gritty look of Diablo which was appealing to so many many has been replaced with a rather cutesy graphical style that moves the overall look somewhere between Torchlight's very cartoony style and Kingdom of Amalur's pastel tones - overall it looks a lot like Dungeon Siege 3 graphically... for a game intended to be a descent into hellish landscapes of the Diablo universe, they've adopted far too cute a graphical style for this old Diablo 1 and 2 player, and they needed to consider their market here.... not 10 year olds with that certificate, game world, and likely fan base; The "oh god please why did you do that" online requirement. THIS is why so many user reviews on metacritic range between 0 and 5. The game REQUIRES that you play permanently logged into battlenet servers... yes, even single player. Couple that with the inevitable server congestion particularly in the first few days and you get a game that you cannot play when you want to. And the thing that irritates the most is the rationale for Blizzard doing so. Wait, it's so you can play multiplayer and chat to people and have online achievements and trade gear with others and reduce the chance of in-game cheating isn't it? No, it blatantly isn't. Because those could be accomplished in multiple ways that didn't fundamentally require that every moment you played as a single player was done online. I get achievements in offline steam games that purely upload stats after sessions or at the next online opportunity. I get to play multiplayer in numerous single player games by selecting multiplayer options. If I want online chat I can go online, same for trading and other features. This leaves exposed the real reason our game (or our game licence as the EULA so dramatically reminds us) is fully tied to battlenet servers and is forced to be played online: as a misguided and failed anti-piracy measure. Misguided and failed for the simple reasons that pirates will be played a cracked version that doesn't require being online at all, and crucually, will be doing so WHILE PAYING CUSTOMERS CANNOT. When battlenet is down and we can't use the software we payed for, the pirates won't be affected. This type of anti-piracy measure only hurts real customers, game pirates work around the measure and avoid the negative consequences of the measure (i.e. server congestions and downtimes). It's a popular move in some game companies (EA love it). These companies need to know how much their customers hate it, how easy it is for the pirates to circumvent it, and how it ultimately ends up hitting the real paying customers and not the intended targets. They spend money that could be invested into the actual game on groups of self-aggrandizing security teams that have sold them a lie, the lie that by taking this path they will reduce piracy - it's **** It doesn't do that at all. It... just... hassles... and... demonizes... your... paying.... customers. End rant.

Difficulty levels. Normal is WAY TOO EASY. Yes I know it's meant to be accessible, and there are way harder difficulty levels in wait for those completing the story on normal. But many gamers don't like to splurge all the way through with zero challenge before they unlock a challenge. A game should challenge the player the first time it is played through too. By all means have an easy mode for weaker players, cater to all levels of ability to ensure a challenge appropriate to skill... but don't force skilled gamers to play all the way through the whole experience BEFORE they can play a game that challenges them (by which time they've less incentive to play, albeit mitigated by the game's decent level of replayability). Here's how I would have done it (though I'm no expert): make normal way harder, to the point when a typical gamer will die many times throughout; have an easy difficulty level for those that are more casual gamers or the squeamish that cry too much when they die a lot; have one difficulty level above normal available from the outset for the tough gamers that want it; then have your other much harder difficulty levels unlock as they do. Simplez. All players catered for, no requirement that pro gamers go for a long walk in a heavily spoilered park without a feeling of challenge.

Overall, an enjoyable game with many of the aspects present necessary to give players their loot-hunting Diablo goodness, but one marred with a crappy anti-piracy measure and some watered down ****

Diablo 3 probably is one of the biggest disappointments to the PC gaming industry in the past 20 years. 10 years waiting anxiously for the sequel to D2, and this is the result, i was truely devastated about it to be honest. Nevermind the stupid complaints about graphics or online only, these are not issues with me. What started as an exciting day for me on launch day turned out to be an absolute nightmare. What company in the history of PC gaming, not to mention one with the largest MMO background in the history of PC gaming, releases a online only game that is completely unusable for 36-48 hours after release? I mean absolutely, positively, worthless. You couldn't log in, you couldn't stay in the game, you couldn't even get your create character screen. I angrily waited it out, debating about returning the game, and finally as able to get a decent amount of play time in, only to be greeted by error 3007 hours later, consistently, every 3 minutes after logging in, 38 times in a row. Blizzards response to this? Your computer or isp is at fault, check your settings. Meanwhile, there's a half a million people on the Diablo 3 forums complaining about the same error effecting them in exactly the same way. A true disgrace to customer service and tech support I must say. Finally I was clued into a trick later on that you had to join general chat to keep you connected to battle.net to prevent error 3007, no one knows why, but it works, and thus gameplay commenced. I had a fantastic time beating the game in normal mode with friends, it had plenty of content, and the drops were decent enough for my level. Thus I made my way into nightmare mode, only to realize that this is where the fun ended, and things went "full retard". Normal baddies were fine, stronger by a significant amount as expected. That was until I met my first group of magical baddies with special spells they are granted....plague, fire chains, poisoning. Thus the dying began, I died a total of 57 times in Act 1 before completing in, and the number of deaths in nightmare alone are well into the hundreds, the fun was literally sucked out of the game every time you ran across a group of spell casting monsters. Often times I would find my self preparing for a fight, and then realize I had just been 1 hit killed without even realizing what had happened. Set all of this aside, as far as the balancing problems go with certain monsters being just, incredibly over powered, I come to find out that blizzard actually reduces your magic find % as you go on in the game.....LOL. So not only does it take you an hour to defeat diablo in nightmare mode with 3 additional players, dying at least 50 times, but you get nothing but crap drops on every...single...boss, only to find out that your level 46, and you cant advance on to hell, because you need to be level 50! LOL Honestly I mean ive never seen a more ass backwards type of gameplay in my entire life. You would think the epic struggle to beat these higher levels as you move on with friends would lead to more epic rewards, when the game is designed for EXACTLY the opposite! In fact you get a magic find bonus of 75% all through normal mode as described by one of the blizzard techs. So there you have it, Its up to you to decide whether or not you enjoy the game, im going to keep on playing because I paid money for it and Ive got nothing else better to do, but I honestly regret buying it, and it has deterred me from ever purchasing anything with a blizzard/activision logo on it. The hardcore mode is what each game should have.

There is something that I believe, and that most of the people can't realise. The game is a long time challenge that cannot be achieved if there were offline play where cracks and hacks are always possible to be used. The idea is that you can improve yourself to unbelievable limits over the time. To achieve this you should find the perfect gear. Here goes the real money aucision house and I believe Blizzard took a long time planning it as it can be easily spoiled. Some of the greatest items available will be listed there. Finally, if you're really that good and manage to beat the Inferno difficulty, the real challange begins. You start the hardcore mode, where each mistake costs everything and you should carefully plan every move of yours. Believe me, this will make you really feel and enjoy the game making your heart beating. So for all the critics, finish the Inferno difficulty and start playing the Hardcore mode.

im not talking about DRM, single player etc because u in my opinion u dont need to play diablo game alone, but the truth is this game lost all the its great features from diablo 2 and turned into WoW 2.
Diablo 2 is still popular 12 years after its release and i see many people who play it online. do u really think this bad game will be played in 12 more years? Diablo 2 is a game that stands the test of time . diablo 3? doesnt even stand the stand of present time.
    BIG DISAPOINTMENT!

To all the DRM-haters: Diablo III is a co-op multiplayer game with a high emphasis on loot and trading. Making the game accessible off-line would mean the game would once again be riddled with botters, hackers and the like. I had great fun today with Diablo III and I expect to have much more fun in the coming months and years. Expand

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
