This game, If I'm totally honest is an amazing game, with an even more amazing community, constantly making mods, videos, speedruns, etc. About the game, and so, I give It a 10/10, because I remember those good old days, were I grabbed on a guide for the dungeons, and start playing TLoZ: OoT, and well, I really love this game.

The rapid improvement of the medium means that everything from aesthetics like sound quality and controls to game content itself has been exponentially scaled in the past 20 years, and though Ocarina of Time is a masterpiece for its time and still is a showcase of excellent game design, its age makes it difficult to place among the greats of the current generation without admitting to some level of nostalgia blindness. Tl;dr if you love zelda games, this is one of the best, and worth your time despite its age.

When the Nintendo '64 was first introduced to the public in 1996, the game "Super Mario '64" revolutionized the gaming industry with the introduction of 3-D gaming. However, it wasn't until two years later that Nintendo really perfected the 3-D adventure genre with the release of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time".

"Ocarina" is, for lack of a better word, a nearly perfect game in almost every sense. The graphics are great (for N64 standards), the music is fantastic, the gameplay is smooth, and the story is incredibly engaging. Much like the Mario franchise before it, the Zelda franchise (although already somewhat established on the NES and SNES) took a simple character (Mario to Zelda), put him in an interesting environment (Mushroom Kingdom to Hyrule), and pits him against fantastic enemies.

Of course, perhaps the true greatness of "Ocarina" is its balance between the essential gameplay and the sidequests. While this game added more depth (riding a horse, getting items that, while not vital to the outcome of the game, will help you, etc.) than any previous game in history, it also wasn't too complicated (see "Donkey Kong 64"). In the game, Link has a straight- forward mission and accomplishes each objective in sequence...you only need to pursue the frivolous things if you so desire.

The quirkiness of the game is also charming. Along the way, Link meets a talking tree, gets trapped inside a fish's belly, befriends the roly-poly Gorons, and liberates temples that each correspond to some sort of natural theme (forest, ice, water, fire, etc.). The first time I ever played "Ocarina", and every time since, I found myself amazed by the crazy and colorful characters that Nintendo came up with for each area of the game.

Finally, a great adventure games also needs to have an intriguing plot (i.e. the reason why the "Myst" computer game series was such a big success while its clones failed), which "Ocarina" delivers superbly. Right away, you are drawn into the storyline that includes rescuing Princess Zelda, defeating the evil Gannondorf, and bring peace to Hyrule again. I know it may sound cheesy, but without an engaging plot the game would have been little more than a sword- slashing RPG with a few puzzles thrown in.

Thus, I recommend "Ocarina of Time" to all gamers, whether young or old, beginners or experts. The difficulty curve is set as such that you will be able to steadily improve your skills in time to defeat each obstacle before you, while enough really challenging side quests exist that you can also hone your skills to a "tee" if so desired. So whether you want to fire up the old N64, dust off the old Gamecube (for which a version of "Ocarina" was released), or buy the game on the Virtual Console of your Wii, do so with confidence that you will instantly be charmed by this amazing work of video game creation.

I played the game when I was 10 years old (in 2017) and it still remains my favourite ever video game.
People say that the graphics and combat are outdated, and do not currently live up to what they once provided in 1998, but I disagree. They are unique, playable and if you give them a chance, it is very easy to get used to them.

The story is by far the best out of every other game I've played. Even without the technology and budget available to them now, Nintendo were able to tell a unique, thought-provoking story that is memorable and interesting. Even now, years after playing the game for the first time, I can still remember every little detail about the story that I thought made it wonderful.

And last but not least, what have you got to lose by playing this game?!?!?!

Still one of the very best Zelda titles to this day, Ocarina of Time brought the franchise into 3D in glorious fashion. While it uses the tried-and-true blueprint established by its masterful predecessor, A Link to the Past, it reinvents combat in a satisfying way and utilizes its addition dimension to great effect.

I really don't need to keep going with this review as the game will speak for itself if you don't have it on any sort of system or have never played it before in your life you are seriously missing out on one of the most iconic games in Video Game History.

Despite being one of the first games I ever got to play, I thankfully avoided the ruby quartz prescription lenses, and don't subscribe to the idea that games can coast forever on "well it was cool at the time". OoT prototypes a lot of mechanics and concepts that have extend to today, and many of them are reviled, but for whatever reason people don't acknowledge those simply because it was the first one to do it. That said, I wont pretend the game isn't enjoyable, cause it certainly is far and away better than a lot of games you could dump dozens of hours into (assassins creed) but there's also plenty of MUCH better games you could also be playing, including ones that have aged far more gracefully than this game. If you want a good comparison, OoT is the video game equivalent of the OLD classic disney movies like Snow White or Cinderella. There's a lot to like, and it was groundbreaking at the time, but in the grand scheme of things you're really just there to see how things used to be. Expand

That being said though, every NPC and monster looks unique and the animations for them, while not always great, are usually good and easy to read.. All the locations are varied and by now are iconic and every dungeon has it's own identity. Very good stuff.

Audio: 10 - Music is a very big factor of this game (there are whole mechanics based off of it). It might be that because of how integral it is to this game that the music is so good. Nearly every single song or even sound effect in this game is memorable. Every town has it's own theme, nearly every dungeon does too! the sound effects are varied detailed and all make sense. There is very little voice acting, so little that no one actually says and words, more like grunts and yells. Even those grunts and yells are done well and became iconic themselves.

Plot: 7 - The plot of this game is kind of hard to deeply understand unless you pay close attention to what the main characters say (especially sense most of the time they'll only say it once.). Even if you don't pay close attention there is still enough to keep you motivated to the next dungeon. The lore for the game is also pretty unique compared to other RPG titles which is pretty refreshing.

The way the story plays out in this game is like non other in a Zelda game before it. Old characters are done in new and exciting ways, locations and lore are more fleshed out and have more meaning to them, there are even plot twists that you may or may not see coming. The only problem that I have with the story is the pacing. After while you get dry periods where even after a dungeon the story just says "Go to the next one" without much or any fan fare.

Gameplay: 9 - This game is a 3D action-adventure RPG. You can travel all across the land to different locations, complete dungeons and find items to help you on your way, hack and slash monsters, and even play minigames!

this is a 3D adventure so naturally you can control Link in a complete 3D space. You can run, climb, and crawl with ease, but not jump. I suspect that Nintendo didn't let Link jump because it would make constructing dungeons easier and they probably didn't want to make a Mario with a sword game. Link CAN jump but automatically and only if you is running off a platform. This sounds simple but it can be hard to measure how far he can really jump in some cases, cause some annoying deaths or time waste.

You can also gather a plethora of items, some one time use but much more are a permanent addition to your arsenal. Unlike other games most of Links items are more for completing puzzles than defeating foes. Each item has its own quirks and uses and almost none are finicky to use.

Combat is very important and also very hard to make right 3D games of this era. Nintendo does something brilliant in this game and incorporates a lock on system in the form of your fairy. With this lock on system no matter how fast and enemy is you can keep track of them. Link also has a good variety of ways he can swing his sword depending on how you move the control stick, which can get some used to but is very rewarding.

The land of Hyrule is vast, not as vast as games today but still vast! Throughout the game you will travel from one place to another on foot or on horse. There's kind of a central hub that you must travel through to get to new and old lands. Eventually you will find faster and faster ways of getting across. Towns and villages are not just stops along the way either. They offer minigames, rewards and even a tiny bit of lore! Every NPC is unique and somewhat have their own personality.

Difficulty: 7 - This game can be difficult but there are many ways to mitigate it. Health and item upgrades are plentiful and can range from very easy to hard to get them. The difficult parts in this game that you cannot make easier is the puzzles. Unless you already know the answer it won't get any easier. Luckily though there is a good curve in difficulty in the game. Sometimes the player may not where to go either but Nintendo thought of this and gave you TWO characters that will give you advice on where to go or even how to beat an enemy!

Overall The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is an absolutely fantastic game even for it's time. Nintendo pulled all the stops to make this game great and I believe they succeeded one hundred percent. This game oozes so much personality that whether you like the game or not it will stay with you forever. I have bought this game for basically every platform it appears on and it always impresses.

i don't think it's as good as people say it is, it hasn't aged as well as people say it has and the 3ds version is an example of that. the gameplay is not better, it feels combat oriented when it should be puzzle oriented. it's really ok in my opinion

Ocarina of time will forever be one of the greatest games in history, it has a deep story and a fun gameplay, the music is beautiful and it introduces iconic characters like Ganondorf and Epona, the graphics haven't age perfectly but it is still good and there is a very well made remake on the 3ds, this is truly a historic masterpiece.

The best game I have ever played. Hands down . This Zelda game alone made me a Zelda fan. I am almost shocked this game was created back in 1998. The gameplay and story is so good you look past the outdated graphics. If you are of a younger generation gamer and have not played Ocarina of Time . Than you need to get a Nintendo 64 console and play this game to appreciate its originality .

It is a solid game and still holds up quite well.

I played oot on the switch so there could have been some controls that maybe were better on the N64 but I didn't encounter any issues really. For example the water temple is tedious because of the switching in your inventory with the iron boots. Jabu Jabu's belly was also an annoying dungeon 'cuz you had to carry princess Ruto

Jabu Jabu's belly was also an annoying dungeon 'cuz you had to carry princess Ruto around.
I generally don't really enjoy Zelda dungeons that much, they are sometimes confusing and difficult or it is not clear what you have to do to progress the game.

The day night cycle is a little on the short side which is just a nuisance (yes the song of the sun helps but it is still annoying to have to play it every 2 and a half minutes.

The side quest for the Biggoron sword is difficult with the timed delivery quests, but worth it in the end.

The time travel mechanic is unique but I would've loved to see it be explored more like in the spirit temple where you do half as a child and the other half as an adult.

I had to look up a bunch of stuff like for example how am I supposed to know that you can only enter the well as a child or how do I know that you have to drop a fish in front of Jabu Jabu.
I feel like it was normal to not know what to do in older games the first Zelda has this very much, but it is just annoying that i had to do the water temple while having a tutorial open.

I do love the story in this game and the characters like Zelda, Sheik and Ganondorf of course.

This game is very much the basis of other 3D Zelda games and I loved finding stuff that was referenced from this game.

The music for the game was fantastic: Hyrule field and Gerudo desert being the most iconic.

The wallet mechanic that was introduced in this game I absolutely despise because if i would collect rupees my wallet was immediately full even with the giants wallet there was just nothing to do with your rupees except for buying the occasional fairy or arrows.

The bosses were original but many didn't have a second phase or multiple attacks which is understandable for a game made in 1998.

Oh and than you have Ganons castle, from the point you beat the last the dungeon the game starts to become really fun.
The 6 barriers that had to be broken was an actually fun dungeon and the climb to the top was very atmospheric and exciting, and then there is Ganon...
playing his own theme song! And him turning around throwing his cape is the most epic thing.
I absolutely love Ganons character in this game just how he is delivered, this is something botw misses in my opinion.

It is a good game but just doesn't hold up to botw for instance.
It shouldn't be a fair comparison between oot and botw but it is very close.
Though for me botw is better game even though many people swear by ocarina of time as best game of ever made.

Graphics have only one objective: Allow you to see. If you can understand what is happening, why is happening and what caused it, then the visuals have succeded. Photo-realistic graphics don't matter if you can't communicate a scene through it. I don't see the graphics in Ocarina as bad, they are like nature. It eventually evolved into something better, and it has nothing to blame for being ugly now.

Not to mention that the dungeons in this game are undisputedly the best dungeons in any Zelda game. In this aspect it's not even close. Dudongo's cavern, Forest temple, Fire temple, Shadow temple and Spirit Temple are all beyond amazing. Out of all the Zelda games that I have played, the only one that pontentially ranks up to this caliber is the Stone Tower temple from Majora's Mask.

BOTW is the first Zelda game I have played and TP was the last one I beat, which I quite liked. This game just doesn't stand out and there is little good I can say about it. It has good music, the story is okay, decent characters and atmosphere. Obviously this game is an achievement for it's time but that's really all that is. A trophy or a success that would have inevitably been earned by a different game if it weren't for this one. That's about all I liked. It's so sad that a lot of games have to live in the shadow of this and cannot compete for the greatest. This game is not timeless and not a masterpiece. The controls and gameplay are clunky, useless and obnoxious companion "Navi", unsatisfying puzzles/dungeons, really poor progression solutions, boring and empty map, very poor graphics... By poor progression I am referring to the pure randomness to the game. Use that one item you certainly obtained as young link from bombing that one specific rock in that area you only visited once. When you didn't have access to bombs. This game is impossible to beat without Youtube guides. "Bad graphics criticism for a 1998 game". True this is not a highly valid criticism. However, there are other games with graphics that aren't necessarily better but much easier on my eyes. Half-Life 1 and FFVII. They do not try too hard just to fall flat on their face but rather have interesting visuals, atmosphere, and world building. Both of these came out before OOT. That's about it. I hope you enjoyed my very needed review. Maybe I'm biased. Maybe I played the game wrong. This is how I will always feel regardless. Please stop trying too hard to be a critic and giving this game titles it doesn't deserve. Expand

This was the first 3D Zelda game and they somehow got everything right. The music... even the soundtrack is a masterpiece on its own. I used prefer Majora's Mask over Ocarina of Time, but I changed my mind when I played this a few months ago. Everyone keeps comparing this to BotW, but if it wasn't because of this game, BotW wouldn't even exist. This game created the 3D Zelda gameplay we all know and love. If you are going to complain about the graphics, then play Ocarina of Time 3D and stop complaining about it. I think that's all I have to say. You should definetly play this. Even today I don't even know what makes it so special and addicting, and I've played it 3 times by now.

Why? Partly because it was the first good game I've actually played. When I first got a Nintendo 64 I was considerably young, and yet every game I played I thought was absolutely horrible. All I had were simple objective games, and as a child I thought they were hard and pointless. Then one day Ocarina of Time was brought home and I at first refused to play it. So I watched my uncle play it for a while, and straight away it was something entirely new and different. Also at the time, it was the most real (to me at least). What brought me in was the ability to actually explore and get to know people, even if the people you talked to all repeated the same things over and over no matter how many times you talked to them, but it didn't matter. This game was something new and exciting to me, and to this day I get this good old nostalgic feeling whenever I play it. It has one of the greatest stories of all time for a video game and was one of the first to create its own sort of universe and it was one of the first 3D environment game where you can see in all 360 degrees (after Mario 64 that is). Plus to this day people are still discovering new secrets to the game and so many in-depth theories arise from this title alone based upon this game that keep it interesting. The characters feel like characters and the visuals are some of the most cinematic of its time. The gameplay is also very fun, which of course is one of the most important things and there are very involving puzzles that are simple enough in appears but very complex when you get down to it. There is so much that I could say about this game, but sometimes even looking back, I'm at a loss of words at how awesome this game is. Expand
