'm a fan of the games, especially Wild Hunt. This is the Witcher, pure and simple. Henry Cavill does Geralt so well I'm sold on the illusion. If you liked the game, you'll probably like this. Cavill delivers pitch-perfect expletives :)

Great adaptation - good choice to run Ciri and Yen's backstories in parallel from the start, as they not only set up those characters but also key elements of the setting. I loved the jumpingCavill delivers pitch-perfect expletives :)

Great adaptation - good choice to run Ciri and Yen's backstories in parallel from the start, as they not only set up those characters but also key elements of the setting. I loved the jumping between time periods which felt very consistent with the patchwork-vignette structure of Sapkowski's books, and a fresh way of interleaving backstory with "the present". Cast are excellent.

Criticisms: lots of nudity which wasn't entirely necessary (though it does speak to Yen's character), and a few lines that were too contemporary (eg. "off-grid"). Even the weaker episodes are still fun though. I was already a fan of the games and books but this show has made my uninitiated wife a fan of the Witcher.

Also want to take a moment to laugh at all the racists moaning about PoC in the cast. You're fine with a Continent full of interdimensional monsters, but not people with different skin tones because you think everyone in this world should be Polish? Geralt will bathe in your tears :)… Expand

I think that nothing surprised me when watched it. In fact the witcher @netflix is a such great thing for people that read the books, nothing more.

It's definitely not the Game of Thrones killer people expected it to be, but it's fun to watch, it's interesting and captivating. Some things are changed from the books, as expected, but the overall picture it paints is quite beautiful. This evening I watched the first episode of The Witcher on Netflix. It was an hour long. It certainly held my attention. My wife left before the end because she hates the violence, which was considerable. I hope we will have to endure lessThis evening I watched the first episode of The Witcher on Netflix. It was an hour long. It certainly held my attention. My wife left before the end because she hates the violence, which was considerable. I hope we will have to endure less bloodshed as the series goes on. Not that it's unrealistic, and the special effects are admirable, nor does it pander to the bloodless violence tropes of Hollywood. Perhaps there'd be less actual violence if people had a better idea what it looks like. There was some nudity and one rather chaste love scene. Compared to GoT, violence was more thematic than carnality. There was a bit more wizardry than I recall from the games, though Geralt was rather sparing in that regard.

Henry Cavill nailed Geralt, and the culminating swordplay was brilliantly executed. Roach seemed perfect for his part as well. Freya Allen as Cirilla (aka Ciri) gave us some interesting moments. The major characters looked good in their parts. Many of the minor characters had confusing accents. I felt the writing represented Geralt as I remember him, struggling to be a just and impartial actor in an unjust world that bids furiously for his allegiance. It was interesting to experience the invasion of the North by Nilfgard and to learn how Geralt became known as "The Butcher of Blaviken". I had little knowledge of Renfri and her tribe before this episode brought her alive. The same with Ciri's family.

Online reviews of the series have been mixed at best. In some ways, perhaps it follows too closely on the heels of GoT, while being even more weird and revolting. I plan to continue watching at weekly intervals. I don't think fans of the main character will be too disappointed.

Episode 2 did not disappoint. Anya Chalotra is BRILLIANT as Yennefer! I never fully understood her witchy personality before. Also I thought they did a splendid job of painting the elves in a sympathetic light. Joey Batey plays Jaskier the Bard, better know as Dandelion, and apparently sang his own songs as well. I found his personality highly annoying, but he has a sweet, well-controlled tenor; he's also quite the skilled lutanist. This episode helped my understanding of the Conjunction of the Spheres and its implications for elven-kind. There's a heavy dose of 'feel for the underdog' here. I hope we meet a few sympathetic human characters before the end.

In episode three I noted a relentless emphasis on the horrific aspects of Sapkowski's stories. I think this material will be too strong for the taste of most adults.

I am a fan of the games and have not heard much about the books, so I am coming from that perspective. I have to say that this show won me over and did so rather quickly. My initial thoughts on the casting was that it really took me by surprise. I thought the choices made were a bit odd, however, each character ends up feeling believable. Now, I really appreciate the unassuming casting that the show has. No one stands out as the expected perfect fit, which makes the characters feel fresh and appropriate in what feels like a well built chaotic world. If everything were perfect, this show, like everything else on film today, would feel formulaic. Instead I find myself pleasantly surprised by finally not knowing what to expect from Hollywood. The key beats in the story are there and names and places all feel familiar, but nothing feels "typical". This isnt a perfect show, but it does a great job of pacing each character's story through the season so that you understand the motivations, relationships and political situations in the world. the sword play is fantastic and it has a great balance of episodic one off episodes with a steady moving larger story line. something that most TV shows fail miserably at. Superman plays Geralt in a way where he starts to feel like the obvious pick for the role. Both Yennifer and Geralt's characters are complex and understandably jaded. The show is a good blend of action, romance, hope, humor and world building. my main complaint is that its only 8 episodes. a great 1st season that sets the series up for a bright future.… Expand

The story is jam packed, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it were polished, but instead they throw at you stuff that lacks any foundation whatsoever. It feels shallow, there's no depth to the world they're trying to build. Racial diversity is great unless it's forced and that's how it is about everything in this TV show. It could all look good if it were in the right place and at the right time, but instead you're led to believe that the population that's at its lowest point, slitting each other throats for petty differences has somehow managed to overcome racial prejudices and even go woke by today's standards. It's silly and it doesn't sell. The second episode was promising, it introduces the lead female character Yennefer we see in the trailer, which is a deformed young woman who's beaten and bullied around, but who's later discovered by mages to have the ability to control magic in a profound way (also seen in the trailer). I was like, oh hell, finally a real strong female character we've all been waiting for, one who'll despite her deformities and flaws bring the world to heel and prove that physical looks and sex are not the most important factors for a female character. But no, few episodes later she is literally (SPOILER AHEAD) turned by magic into a Slavic Cinderella and it's all Mary Sue from that point on. What a waste... I never played the game, but I hope it's better than this.… Expand

Same atmosphere as the video game. Outstanding photography. I'm loving it. The choice of actors (triss aside) seems excellent to me. I hope that the second season is up to this one.

Live action recreation of the stories isn’t the best but definitely does an excellent job in comparison to all the poorly done ones we have seen over the years. This show is a great treat for all the fans out there and I hope they continue to improve and show more seasons.… Expand

Damn! It is really well made and Henry Cavill surprised me to the point that now I'm a fan !
I love the actors, I love every scene and soundtrack that really made lost myself inside each episode!
I'm really happy how they managed to introduce this wonderful world created by Andrzej Sapkowski, they have played really well the time-lines/events in the show to introduce you from the beginning to this fantastic saga!
Looking forward for the second seasons and for the others! Finally another series that will make history!… Expand

Сериал вынуждает зрителя следить за диалогами, где упоминаются события, чтобы сопоставить время сюжетных арок трех главных героев относительно друг–друга. Йеннифэр — вырастает из искуроченого гадкого утенка в мага испепеляющего армии, Геральт — циник, познающий любовь, бессмысленно бегущий от всесильной Судьбы. И Цири, выброшенная той же Судьбой из принцесс в реальный жестокий мир. Весь первый сезон посвящен развитию этих персонажей, все сюжетные лини синхронизируются только в самом конце.

Если вы окончательно испорчены комиксоидной манерой подачи сюжета — сериал не для вас.

Мой респект режиссеру, сценаристам и актерам не скатившимся в тупизну. Жаль что ждать еще год… Expand

I'm giving the score as a level of enjoyment for a fan of the games. Firstly, I can totally understand why there are negative reviews related to the film making in the initial episodes. The dialogue feels dry, the costumes look plastic andI'm giving the score as a level of enjoyment for a fan of the games. Firstly, I can totally understand why there are negative reviews related to the film making in the initial episodes. The dialogue feels dry, the costumes look plastic and the exposition is confusing. However, this is really the show just catching its stride. Eventually it becomes the Witcher we know and love. Especially by episode 3-4 the show brings everything together and we are on our way. There are a lot of shows out there with more polish but nothing with the heart of the Witcher lore. A lot of the 0 scores on here seem to be based on a perceived SJW narrative. Guys, they are just black actors. Hiring black actors isn't a SJW narrative. People from all backgrounds want to see themselves reflected in the characters on screen. It's just made for a broad audience. It's a fictional universe where the colour of your skin has no impact on character building. It isn't a historical drama where such criticisms might be more reasonable.… Expand

Don't understand the bad reviews people post. Complain about this mature series, with dark atmosphere and not cringing dialogue. As I can see the main critiques come for some secondary actors being black actors? Its a fantasy world people. Its not "slavic" exclusive from only Europe. ITS FICTIONAL. Get over little politic details and because of this you give it a disastrous score like being the worst ever netflix show. Stop being crying political propagandists and enjoy the story.

In my opinion the tv show keeps the atmosphere from the witcher books and games. They keep true as possible to the lore material and it is put in good manner in the show.The scenery, the mood , the dialogue is good. The action is very good. Was binge watching the whole season until 4 am. It is a good series that is something more mature and more dark as it should be.That is what it is all about. That makes the witcher universe work and they nailed that part.

Of course like in every movie or show, there are good actors and some mediocre ones. Some of them are not so good but that doesnt mean its destroys the show. The main ones are playing good esspecially Gerald is well interpreted.

Its a good show, brings somethhing fresh to Neflix, more mature and more quality to the roster. Its a different fantasy and feels good to see something diffrent and well implemented.
Can't wait for season 2.… Expand

Damn good pilot season!
I've only played the games, but i must say that netflix did a good job. Too bad Geralts mom did not play Triss.... (Sjw's did not ruin the show like i was thinking for almost a year)

Don't trust the critics on this one. First of all, the tv series stayed true to the books (except for some casting). So if you're a fan of the books and games, this one is definitely for you. This is a really solid tv show. I liked it much much better than the last season of Game of thrones.
