It looks absolutely cheap and funny. Seems like all budget was spent on Henry Cavill’s salary or on something else. Absolute lack of atmosphere, presented in books, strong and unjustified differences in appearance of some characters.

I love books and in the same way I love this TV series ..
I think it has a lot of potential to become the most beautiful fantasy TV series of recent times.

the only negative note is the technical sector on some occasions, probably limited by the medium-low budget.

I'm one of those people that feel disappointed after watching the show, I feel like this is mostly due to my personal bias towards a more rough, medieval European based, Slavic in nature version of the story. I've read the books back in high school and they have resonated with me well, unfortunately, it means that I came to the show having a strong vision of what it 'should' be. This is probably the worst pre-condition to have. It made me think that everything with the show is wrong, I haven't felt anything and I was pissed most of the time, nitpicking on every single detail.

Overall the show had this strong feeling of being a theatrical performance, which I couldn't stand... it's like something was always off, the backgrounds seemed fake, the sets were built too perfect without showing much of the wear, the lighting was too perfect and therefore felt fake - like one would expect in a theatre. I consider this as a flaw regardless of my personal preferences, the whole show had this feeling of being a cheap knockoff. If it had a 'big' budget it must have been burnt without producing the results that were expected. Any comparison to the GOT is just a sad joke. If you look at the final trailer or what's being played on Netflix when you select the show it's all based on a quick succession of fast action shots that lasts less than 1 sec. and they look good when shown like that, but when you let them play in full length during the episodes they lose everything... In conclusion, I would rather see the whole budget of this show being redirected to producing a fully CGI version based on the Wild Hunt's intro. Wish you all the best for season2.

This is a superb series. Do not let critics who don't even like fantasy tell you otherwise. Game of Thrones comparisons should be kept to a minimum too.

Every single element is top-notch: with flawless cinematography and direction; excellent performances by the entire cast, but special mention to Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The plot is perfectly crafted to create parallelisms between scenes in the past (most of Yennefer and Geralt scenes) and in the present (everything that happens with Princess Ciri). It may be a difficult to follow the story in chronological order, but it's totally worth it for the purpose of creating a more powerful message with each episode. Fighting scenes are spectacularly choreographed and shot. The special effects are very well done, especially the creatures.

The setting is absolutely fascinating. It's a very complex world with a lot of different factions and kingdoms struggling for power and dominance. The witchers like Geralt are pariahs, even though they risk their lives to fight all kinds of monsters. Witchers aren't heroes per se, as they ask for payment for their service. Sorcerers are another important faction in this world. They usually act as counselors to kings and queens, but they have ulterior motives. Elves appear not as the respected and powerful beings like in Lord of the Rings, but as a threat to Human dominance.

It's very difficult for me to come up with flaws. As you can tell, I adore this series. But it has to be said I'm a huge fan of the fantasy genre, so your mileage may vary if you're not. If you're not too fond of the fantasy elements, there's a lot to enjoy besides that, from political intrigues, to epic battles, to empowering female characters, to moments of romance or comedy, always handled with tact and taste.

I think the voice of Gerald was good but was hard to perceive. In that aspect, subtitles are a must. The Bard segments are deliciously funny. And Yennefer is dangerous and sensuous. Yes I get it, I'd complain if whites were part of a Zulu tribe in a historical setting, but this isn't a historical story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not thrilled about this series. Narrative is messy. My boyfriend hasn't read the books, so he was confused by the plot, he couldn't understand what's going on. Why the show shows us the fall of Cintra, Heralt's adventures and Yennefer's youth at the same time and there is no indications that all that happened in the different times, there are decades between these events. And in the next episode we see a story about Pavetta and Urcheon of Erlenwald...
The cast isn't perfect. I like Henry Cavill as Herald, he looks not like Heralt from the books, but like Heralt from the games and he is so beautiful man

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Those racists here should really get their head out of their arse.First of all the story plays in a fantasy world. It's not medieval eastern Europe. It's not even remotely like medieval eastern Europe so the idea that everybody should be white is pure racist preconception. Second of all if you are so obsessively preoccupied with the color of people's skin that says more about you than about the series. Seriously, get help.
The series has strong points and weak points.
Strong:The hack & slash scenes are second to none. Brilliant sword play and buckets of blood. The sex scenes could be a bit more explicit.I mean if you are going to do it, do it right like GOT in the beginning.Still i'm glad they didn't sanitize it. And the world is beautifully created, both dark and gritty as well as clean and elegant.
Weak points: It is written for the Witcher die hard fan base. The characters including Geralt himself aren't properly introduced.Presumably because the writers are fans themselves and they know all these characters. I myself have played the first pc game and part of the second. But to me a lot of the characters are rather flat and it's not always clear why they do what they do.The main story line is hard to follow to be honest after one season I'm still not sure where it is all going. And the fact that they don't tell the story chronologically doesn't help.At a certain point you can watch for half an hour and not be quite sure where in the time line they are.And then there is this war and Nilfgaard are the bad guys I suppose. But why what and who they are, I don't know.Actually the only character that is properly introduced is Renfri and she's killed of by Geralt in the first episode. If it had been the other way around the series might have become a lot more interesting.
All in all it is an entertaining show, but they do need to work on their story telling and character development if they want to move from a cult fan show to GOT appeal.I would give it a 6.5. It is not terrible but it needs work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Henry had a beautiful character play, I wish his time on a show was more.
Yenifer stole more than half of the show time for yourself (does this serial called Witcher?)
Yenifer was the most useless and selfish character in the fight in the last episode. This is your diversity show Triss and Yenifer as similar visual characters? Maybe at least make different hair color?
What the point of so much silence faces in dialogs? To show that character a little stupid and need so much time to think?
Why all black characters have main secondary roles or powerful roles? I don't have anything against black people in power, but why only powerful roles? Isn't this a little bit of racism? Dialogues have some problems, telling obvious things to fulfil time not cool.
It easy to see that this is a modern people in old clothes, not like people feel and play like characters of those old times.
Ciri beautiful character pick, but sometimes a little bit stupid. I understand that she afraid of everything and very young. But not in the 10nd ep, she saw more **** that everyone reading this already, it need to be some grow of character during 10 episodes.
Too many feminists monologues. Stop forcing this pls, we are live on equal society, don't make it matriarch.
Can't not mention Joey's good screenplay and witcher song :)
All in all, I awaiting for new parts of the series but hope producing will be better...

That being said i'm no way biased but this t.v show is incredible, the pacing is perfect, the characters rich in personality and all contribute to play their part. No one person holds this t.v show together, even the cameos of less actors are really well done based on plot and their lines.

The second season is by far the best and i didn't think it could get better after the secoond season, really anticipating the third season. When i heard Henry Cavil was playing Geralt i was really sceptical he could do it, but his execution is flawless doesn't play Geralt like he's a cartoon, but doesn't suck the life out of him either, the lines and quips they gave him are perfect doesn't overplay it. The Witcher is a mixed bag of delight and annoyance, spectacle and boredom, humor and confusion.

I was looking forward to loving this, and there were moments when I did. The show's writing flaws, however, stick out like a barbarian at a royal gala, and making it to the end of this surprisingly short season felt like a dungeon crawl of its own.

Henry Cavill's Geralt is the best thing about The Witcher, and he kept me going each time I wanted to stop (which was often). He's not a fan of pomp or pretense, and calls people out on their BS. He's got a dry wit that cuts deep and makes me grin. That black armor steals the scene every time. I'm not too familiar with Geralt's mythos, but this feels like great casting. Cavill brings a likability that, combined with good dialogue, a healthy dose of mystery, and some solid character development, results in a winning recipe.

And yet, the show puts up a pretty thick wall between the viewer and the world of The Witcher, and it's called Lore (tm).

References to creatures, races, kingdoms, laws, historical events, legends, and important people are constantly thrown around without much of an explanation to the viewer. Best case, this leaves the viewer feeling left out, like we're not "in" on the joke or reference. Worst case, the audience can't actually follow the story. I've seen the entire season and about 40% of it made sense to me.

Putting all that lore and history aside, the very moment-to-moment decisions characters make aren't explained well, either. Many decisions are not conveyed well, and I can't tell what the characters are thinking a lot of the time.

Magic is also completely glossed over in The Witcher. If there's any kind of rule system for it, it's never actually discussed. People who shouldn't have magical powers are always using them. People who are SUPPOSED to be wizards won't use magic at obvious moments. Apparently it's possible to RUN OUT of magic, somehow. What's this "chaos" we keep hearing about?

The second main character we're introduced to is Ciri, who's completely devoid of all backstory, desires, sense of humor, personal taste, philosophies, or actual character development. She likes to play this game with bones, and she seems reasonably fond of her Grand mom. That's all we get.

Ciri is simply used as a perpetual and token damsel in distress, getting bumped from one situation to another, and making very few of her own decisions along the way. I found myself WANTING bad things to happen to her, just so she'd build a little personality.

Because the show's plot wasn't quite confusing enough, the writers decided to toss in some out-of-sequence storytelling. The story jumps back and forth between various time periods without warning the viewer. Characters clearly die and then reappear in later episodes without explanation. The passage of time is inconsistent. It's impossible to tell whether it's meant to be a day later, a month later, many years later, or even some time in the past. It doesn't help that it's implied that some of the characters might be immortal. Or maybe they just age slowly. I'm not sure. I give up.

Rounding out our trinity of main characters is Yennefer, by far the most frustrating of the three.

First introduced in episode two, Yennefer's story starts out well, setting her up as the underdog in a long story of self-discovery, determination, and growth, that... oh, wait, it's over. We don't get to see her gradual transformation or feel like we're along for the journey. Instead, all we get is a super-quick origin story that barely makes sense and ends with nowhere left to go. As a result, she ends up spending most of her remaining five episodes acting like an arrogant, bored, immature, impulsive, reckless, power-mad diva. Are we sure she's supposed to be one of the good guys?

None of these issues, however, are the main, glaring problem with The Witcher. There's no plot.

None of our three leads are actually TRYING to do anything specific. There are no goals, motivations, passions, recurring antagonists, or big-picture achievements for them to accomplish. Geralt wanders aimlessly from town to town, getting involved in local monster fights and trying not to "care" about humans.

Ciri KIND OF has a quest in that she's looking for Geralt. She's doing a real bang-up job of it, too, wandering aimlessly from town to town, asking random people if they've seen him and getting herself abducted over and over.

Oh, but Yennefer DEFINITELY has a goal. What she's after is to wander aimlessly from town to town, indulging various impulsive whims until she inevitably gets bored and moves on yet again. Picking up on a pattern here?

I could understand this being a mediocre experience if we were talking about a long season, like 20 plus episodes. Isn't the whole point of "quality over quantity" to be, you know, the QUALITY, Netflix?

If they spent a little more effort and screen time to dig into the story and a tad less on their political touch points, this can really benefit. The monster CGI fights also needed some better direction. Don't let the terri-bad first fight scene in Episode 1 put you off, it does get much better.

Though the cgi IS truly terrible at times, as are the shockingly cheap sets. The acting is too often confused and wooden as the script is a complete mess. All likley due to the weak direction and a total lack of quality control. Not sure who to blame but it's likely the show runner who has a track record of hit and miss projects. Sadly this is no game of thrones! It does get better as it goes along (but not by much) though it's just so much worse than the books or game or even the anime. The brand deserves so much better. The anime despite it's own problems really nails the feeling of what it is to be a witcher while this show doesn't have a clue. It's embarrassing at times how cheap and lazy the production is. I believe Henry has actually taken tips from fans for s2 because he had as much of a clue who Geralt was.. as the show runner. It's a real shame as the casting is excellent as is the source material. The show is technically based on the books but clearly the games as well even if its not officially acknowledged. The show is much like xena and hercules but not as fun. It's also inexplicably dumb at times but this might be due to the misuse of the giant budget. Also Its filmed in a weird disconnected order to its detriment as it confuses viewers. I believe this was the show runner attempting to make the missteps in production more interesting in editing. Maybe season 2 will be better now it's so popular. I Hope so. Worth a look but keep expectations low. Like really low...as there are equal good parts as there are clunky stinking ones :( Also if you do love the games go watch the nightmare of the wolf anime first. It's meant to help with season 2 but it's just so much truer to the brand than much of season 1. 6/10 Season 2 review: Google review doesn't discern between entire seasons lol so I've added 1 extra star. Season 2 is significantly better. The writing is still poor and the show runner is still mucking things up. The sex and nudity is long gone because the show runner thinks it covers up bad writing which it does but now we just have bad writing and excessive violence. Because the bodies we all share is far more offensive than cutting off people's limbs. The cgi is still far from perfect but it is alot better in that it's now acceptable to good rather than bad. The acting is still strong among the lead characters though minor ones struggle with the weak screenplay. Though the overall story is far more vague with far less actually happening and lots of names or places and people without much explanation. There are actual monsters now to fight so a real result and the action scenes are far more competent. Geralt is still as good as ever though he's a little more loving now. Yen is yen but with more clothes. Vesimir is quite good. The mages still scheme. Same old same old. The budget of ten plus million dollars doesnt feel like it's being spent well. There is still room for significant improvement. This is no game of thrones but atleast it's no longer Xena warrior princess. 8/10 Expand

Expand

As in the books and games, the main character is Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and i'm not afraid to say that he has done an incredible job with such a difficult character. Besides, the other main characters such us Yenn, Jaskier or Ciri are way better than I expected.
Although there are really good points, the show is not perfect at all. There are some decisions like Triss Merigold casting, or some storylines which are very different from the book. (I don't mean that the actress which interpretates Triss isn't good, what I mean is that if any character is perfectly described in the book like a white red-colored Triss, why would you have to change her? Is it necessary?).
In conclusion, if you are expecting to watch what you have red in the books, this isn't your show, but if you are open-minded you have to give it a chance.

Well, i have mixed feelings for this but in overall i was amazed and i respect the director because it was loyal to the books!
We were in need of an actor that was a genuine gamer, he played the games, was a fan of them, knew who is Geralt and i am glad that Cavill was the choice. I didn't like some other picks like triss and yen (mostly for the appearance) but yen was not that bad, she did her best i believe. Dantelion was amazing too!
Now for the plot... If you haven't read the books and you haven't played the games then it will be a complete mess because the storyline doesn't play with the right order.
The music was good in overall but i was hoping for the Percival band to make the OST...
Anyways, i am looking forward for the next season, it will be a lot better i believe because now they have a bigger budget.

But After watching the First 2 Episodes i began to love his style and how good he played geralt in the series. I also didn't had a Problem with yennefer in the series, i Think the actress played the Role very good. Cirilla was also no Problem but i hope in the future, the actress is aware of the Role that she is playing, because cirilla is the most Important character in the whole witcher universe, and i was shocked when i heard that both, the actress of ciri and yennefer, wasn't aware of the Role that they were playing. I can imagine the pressure that those 2 actress have on their shoulders. All in all a must watch series for the witcher Franchise Fans, but there is one thing that really get on my nerves, and it is the reason why i only give 9/10 Points. It is because of triss actress. I can't say how much i lovvvveeeeeee triss, it was always my favorite character After geralt, and i have her on the same Spot as ciri, because i really really like ciri and i really really love triss. She is such a sweet, lovely, cute ,handsome, super good looking but also badass character in the witcher games. I can just repeat myself to infinity at how much i love this character. But when i saw her for the first time in the series, i was just soooooooo disappointed. Yes, i know that in the books she has brown hair, but i didn't liked the actress at all. I'am sorry but she just looked like a 53 years old Lady and for me she was so unsympathetic, and her look, i didn't liked how she looked at all, the face Impression just made her so unsympathetic. It was really hard for me to accept her in the series. I'am sorry for the actress, but they should have choosed a much better actress than her, an actress that looked more like triss from the games, because 80% of the People Knows the witcher from the games. I would like to see triss with red hair in the series, so that the actress looks more like her. After all i would give the witcher series a 9/10 because it is only 1 actress that i don't like. Expand

Expand

The series has the challenge to fit many loosely connected short stories and a different story happening much later into a cohesive piece, which might be hard to follow for people unfamiliar with the source material. It isn't optimal, but i think the approach that this series took is a good compromise.
What matters most is that i found myself at the edge of my seat for almost all of the time

Kevin Sorbo's Hercules by way of Game of Thrones aesthetic

It starts out as episodic tales of the wandering hero who values solitude and few words and it builds to a larger connected more epic adventure story.

It grew on me. I'm not gonna lie; I didn't like the first few episodes. But I stuck with it. I got used to the humour and the comic character and just surrendered to the show and had fun with it.. and I'm happy I did! The last half of the season is particularly impressive. I can't wait to see what happens next :)

2-what is this CGI its Really bad and Laughable. what's wrong with you netflix, game of thrones season 1 had 60 million and the witcher had around 70–80 million, but game of thrones season 1 CGI was much better.
3- ciri arc from episode 2-6 was just a fillers and had no Effect on her story, its not even fun

I have played the games and read the books and this was a decent adaptation. What some people don't realize is that a video game has to be made to be entertaining for TV audience not just those who played the game. There is some ham here in there though. Unfortunately we live in a society today that people are easily offended because there is diversity in a show as if they are not racist for saying so. It is a fantasy world so no there is no rules to follow, and again it is made for a modern audience not just those that have no concept of art and are only gaming. Expand

Fortunately, the public's taste is better than that of professional critics. This is the fantasy i waited a life long. Books are perfect and there is so much good material for the future. Love it!

Boring, slow, confusing if you didn't read the books. Bad acting. Hope that next season gets better although the story in the books only gets worst as they go along.

Mostly faithful fantasy adaptations should be rewarded. Having a strong cast, decent effects, and a story that makes you think and feel cinched this high score.

It turned out pretty good series. Of course, if you are guided by the book, that is shortcomings and additional characters are introduced. For which I lowered my rating. But without this, there’s no way now, therefore 9.

The movie is very good, quite impressive, but the female lead is not as expected. Expect and hope part 2 will come out soon and not disappoint the viewers.

If you haven't read the book, then you'd better watch the first 3 series carefully, cause it's there are three different times shown in parallel that can confuse new fans. But in other cases it's excellent!

If you hold any love for fantasy, adventure, great storytelling, romance and villains that are riddled with the infamously grey morality that The Witcher is known for then you are watching the right show. The casting is generally great. As someone who adores The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and is playing The Witcher 2: Assassin's Of Kings and currently reading The Witcher The Last Wish, I simply cannot get enough of this universe. This show is the latest in an incredible IP and it needs to last for at least 6 seasons. Expand
