Really liked fight scenes, they were filmed very good. Each episode is better than the previous one, and it's great! Can't wait for the Season 2!

As a fan of the series, I am 99% satisfied. I watched season 1 already 8 times and did not even think to change my rating for the worse. It's a terrific show and hope, after the horrific Game of Thrones finale. The only problem with The Witcher series is very little, despite the lengthy 8 episodes. The Witcher universe is too big and the story is very complex, so I understand the indignation of many fans who wanted to see a lot, but because of the cinema, it is impossible to show and tell everything. Nevertheless, season 1 showed a decent backstory and allowed those who were not familiar with the story to get acquainted with it. Great start of the series !!!
What we liked:
1) The cast. It seemed to me quite acceptable. All actors are well accepted in the role of certain characters, but this does not mean that the casting is perfect. There is work to do!
2) Acting in some cases, I was simply amazed at how well the actors convey the images of the main characters. Personally, I felt a strong resemblance to Geralt of Rivia as Henry Cavill, Yennefer as Anya Chalotra and Jaskier as Joey Batey - they are just great and well conveyed the emotions and characters of the characters. The rest of the actors were also pretty good to one degree or another, but it was season 1, so it's too early to criticize.
3) Narration. Even if it seemed confusing, but quite logically it revealed the beginning of the story without focusing on the main thing in order to make it possible to understand.
4) The series is filmed very well. Each episode is pleasant to watch, the scenery is pleasing to the eye, it is interesting to watch what is happening and there is nothing superfluous.
What did you dislike or embarrass:
1) Gnomes! Didn't the creators of the series watch The Lord of the Rings? The same applies to dragons, which were well, not at all like those images to which we are accustomed. The dragons in the show were more like a breed of dragons.
2) Costumes are weapons! This is an important component, but for some reason they save on it. especially the armor of Geralt in the photo from the filming of season 2 (in season 1, his armor was much better !!!).

Many thanks to all of us who filmed and starred in this wonderful series. I look forward to the sequel and the announcement of the season 2 show date.

Yes there is room for improvement and if your going into this expecting a "Game Of Thrones" level of awe and wonder then you will be disappointed. However, If you can look past that and try to look at this as something new and dare say unique, then you may end up enjoying it a bit. Maybe it is time we all Tossed a Coin to Our Witcher. Oh and Henry Cavill is FANTASTIC as Geralt/The Witcher. Expand

The video game is based on novels of the same name written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Sapkowski's work is often used for source material on various entertainment projects.

I'll say I was almost shocked at the high quality of this video series. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was the creator and showrunner for the series - which I did not know until after I watched the first episode. She has a very respectable filmography and I assume she has a very large role in the high quality of the series.

Obviously, not everyone is going to like an action/adventure/fantasy video series - but, if this is the type of subject material you favor, I would highly recommend that you watch this series.

It probably needs to be pointed out that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich first noteworthy writing effort was for the liberal/leftest American TV series "The West Wing". Hissrich has a strong liberal/leftest ideology that she imparts to this series. Some viewers may not be able to accept this because they are so strongly opposed to her political and social beliefs and/or because it is not within the original spirit of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski works. Regardless, the series itself is of high quality within the context of writing, casting, acting, directing, editing, costume, set design, etc, etc.

I just now took a look at the Metacritic user-ratings .This show is obviously not a "10" and it is obviously not a "0" - but, somewhere betwixt. There is an obvious highly emotional reaction to how Hissrich has deviated from the source material and re-imagined the Witcher into a woke/social-justice platform. I'm ignoring that issue for the most part in my review as I prefer to ignore political/religious/social issues in regard to fictional entertainment.

I've started watching the 3rd season of the NetFlix series of The Witcher.
Henry Cavill who plays the main character role of Geralt of Rivia - a magically enhanced monster-hunter known as a "witcher".
Henry Cavill was not in the second season - and, now looking back over the three seasons the impact that Cavill has had on the series is extremely noticeable.
Henry Cavill is a good actor - but, more so, the Witcher character is perfect for his personality and acting traits.

If you are a fan previous to watching the Netflix series I'd give it a solid 8. It is a slow burn to start but mostly lives up to expectations set forth by the books and games. Spends a bit too much time setting up the story, plot and characters, if you are unfamiliar it will be very overwhelming what is happening, who is who and where the current on screen story is taking place due to erratic time skips. Some casting choices are a bit on the safe side but overall Herny Cavill, Freaya Allan and Anya Chalotra are great castings for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Only the casting of Triss Merigold is a bit of a head scratcher, while she doesn't play a huge part yet in the series she will judging by the Books and Game. Triss being such a big name in the Witcher universe it was weird not having her play a bigger role in the story.

Overall I'd recommend anyone to watch until the third episode to give it a real shot, has decent fights, true to lore monsters, politics, nudity and overall good acting. Only major downfall of the first season was the slow burn, plodding story for the first few episodes and 1 or 2 uhhhh okay at best CGI moments but nothing thats a show killer. More budget and time and this could be a great show for years to come. Oh and don't let the "critics" reviews give you a bad impression, let those idiots go back to drooling over a meh at best Star Wars Rise of Skywalker and a terrible end to Game of Thrones that they seemed to love. I think they watched completely different things than we did.

Very passable rendition of The Witcher.
Critics should have played the games and read the books instead of comparing it to game of thrones.

Still, one of the best Netflix "originals" to date.

A good take on the Witcher series. Although I must admit that I wasn't sure about Henry Cavill as Geralt when I first heard about the casting, I now have to admit he did a great job playing him.

Although they could have executed all the various plotlines a bit better, especially as you seem to jump back and forth between different years, said plots were all excellent and seeing it all get together at the end was nice.

Like the others, I'm less happy with some of the casting choices in this series based on Slavic myth, but with most characters it was just easy to roll my eyes, turn my brain off and keep watching.

Another thing was, that, although fight scenes against humans looked good, especially if it was Witcher vs. Average Human, when it was against obviously CGI monsters it looked a bit...off. Not especially bad, but not great either.

Overall, though, I'm happy with the Witcher and looking forward to/hoping for a Season 2. Might play the Witcher games again or pick up the books while I wait.

The Witcher is an adaptation of eight books and three video games, released by CD Project Red. I have not read the books, but I have played all three video games. I watched this with my wife, who has no experience with the universe.

I was worried about the adaptation for Netflix and in particular, Henry Cavill as Geralt of Riva. Geralt is an older character, and I was worried about how this would play out on the television. My worries were misplaced, as Henry portrays Geralt as close to the source materials that could be achieved in an adaptation from hundreds of hours of video games and books into television. It is clear that Henry is a fan of the source material and this shows through his entire performance, even down to the voice.

I didn’t buy into Anya Cholatra’s portray of Yennefer for most of the series but later on, it became more accurate to the source material; particularly in the final episode. Overall, Anya appears to be a very talented actress and I look forward to seeing her rise in prominence. I want to see her ‘own’ this character in the way Cavill has already taken ownership of Geralt.

Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold is difficult to judge in this series, as she is very much a side character with little dialogue (mostly exposition outside of a single episode). Her wardrobe is out of place with the character we have grown to love in the video games; with the red hair that has become synonymous with Triss being absent. This is a character that will hopefully be developed in the future. The sorceresses are vain, and they use magic to heighten their physical appearance; they are cunning, long term strategists and committed to spreading their influence throughout the world. They use their positions at Court to gain influence and further their own goals. We need to see more of this.

Freya Allan as a young Ciri provided a competent portray, although again lacking substantial dialogue throughout the series. We know the character is special but the moving timeline in the episodes again made this character underexplored. This series is very much about Geralt and Yennefer and their rise in prominence and renown in the world. Joey Batey as Dandelion is the stand out character in the series and the closet to portray to the character from the subject materials. “Toss a coin to your Witcher” is the standout track from the series and fits the character perfectly. He portrays Dandelion with the cheek and playfulness that the subject material gives him. He provides the comedic relief in what is a bleak world and if Joey’s portray had been less sincere, it would have had a substantially detrimental impact on the series.

The world of The Witcher is captured accurately in this series; the grimy, dirty, middle ages atmosphere is abundant through the entire series. Several episodes were easy to get lost in, with the timeline moving backwards and forwards without clearly informing the viewer that this is happening. We had several “, but she died..” moments before realising what was going on. It was the main cinematography misstep in the series; I don’t see how the series would have been negatively impacted by portraying the series in its correct timeline.

The fight scenes are well-choreographed and provide enough gore and violence in short, sharp, points not to overindulge. The sex scenes will disappoint fans of the Witcher 2 but they are enough to move the storey forward; the relationship between Geralt and Yennefer builds as they begin to adore each other. The characters are mostly undeveloped and the finale of the season was left somewhat on a cliff hanger. This season needed a more in-depth initial examination of the characters at (perhaps) the loss of the storey to set the scene for new viewers, rather than leaning on fan service to bring in the converted. The converted were always going to be here for this after being starved of Witcher content since 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A longer season of say 12 episodes could have better developed these areas; we don’t even get a substantial explanation of what a Witcher is and how they are created! Overall we had a positive experience with this series, it hits most of the right notes but falls short of being a stand out season – it has all the hallmarks of an opening season with producers who are not entirely confident on how well it will be received. We are looking forward to the second season, which has already been greenlit. This is a solid 8/10 and worthy of a second season but this will need to do much more to bring in new audiences into this world and make this a long term Netflix hit that it has the potential to do. I hope they put caution aside and allow the writer to bring these characters to life in the second season.

But as a fan of the Game ,but not so much the books I really didnt think Netflix's : "The Witcher" would appeal to me at all. Then you Meet Henry Cavil as Geralt and he is perect in the role, then Anya Chalotra as Yennifer who just nails the Sorceress and Finally Joey Batey as Dandelion and the show simply revolves perfectly around them.. While there is definently some harder to watch performances these 3 along with Renly in the begining and it easy to overlook the flaws.
Another thing they have done well in implement the world and its law in a way that isnt overwhelming. It has been dumbed down some what but you cant blame the shows creators for that, given the low intelligence of critics these days.
Its an amazing ride so far, full of cool and funny moments, and Season one has definitely set the ground work for a tale spaning years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is not for all, It's mosty for fan base of Witcher books and games, with twist of USA politics on casting. I did really enjoy that show, cause Am a big fan of books, even after some plots were skipped or just short to establish world. It's fantasy, so tons of stuff can go in. I just hate, when they don't know how does dragon look like. Actors really bring the world to real. It's a dark fantasy.

Good parts: Nice story, good character representation, you can feel chills when Witcher starts his sword work. It's really tries to be on point with books. You can feel the tension, and what character works.

Bad ones: Some silly stuff, like witcher should be OP in fight witch humans. Yen fight with bad guys as good as Geralt. You don't really know why Geralt and Jaskier is a thing i always felt like they we're opposites of themselves, to show character development of Geralt, who is old, cynical, and hard to handle. In here Jaskier is just ok and can sing.

The 1st episode felt a bit, 'B' Movie to me, but once it moved onto episode 2 and onward the series seems to have found it's footing and is more than a little enjoyable.
Most of the filming seems to be done in very limited locations, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of flow from one location to another, as if the episodes are just a series of set pieces.
That said, it does a decent job on the whole of conveying the story it's trying to tell.

--All truths rhyme. Thus far I'm enjoying the series. The casting and portrayal of Geralt of Rivia is almost spot on in terms of looks, costume and demeanor as that seen in the video game series "The Witcher" of the same name. Is the series a perfect adaptation of the books? No! of course not, what is? The video games? Certainly not the games either. What the Netlfix series does well, and similarly the video games by CD-projekt Red, is capture the essence, humor and charm of Geralt and his way of navigating himself in a world full of heinous, selfish people and their political schemes or conspiracies all while he is protecting the weak and vulnerable. There are a few laughs and dark humor here and there. The action is quite satisfying when there is the opportunity to see, Geralt's sword play. That first fight seen towards the end of the first episode, top that!!. To be fair, the books consist mostly of dialogue and drama between characters. The Netflix series stays true to this. As well as not straying so far away from the books or game lore that us fans cannot recognize particular characters.

The casting / acting is well done. Of course, Cavil as Geralt is the best. The evolving character Yennifer continues to surprise. More on it later...

As in the books and games, the main character is Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and i'm not afraid to say that he has done an incredible job with such a difficult character. Besides, the other main characters such us Yenn, Jaskier or Ciri are way better than I expected.
Although there are really good points, the show is not perfect at all. There are some decisions like Triss Merigold casting, or some storylines which are very different from the book. (I don't mean that the actress which interpretates Triss isn't good, what I mean is that if any character is perfectly described in the book like a white red-colored Triss, why would you have to change her? Is it necessary?).
In conclusion, if you are expecting to watch what you have red in the books, this isn't your show, but if you are open-minded you have to give it a chance.

I think the voice of Gerald was good but was hard to perceive. In that aspect, subtitles are a must. The Bard segments are deliciously funny. And Yennefer is dangerous and sensuous. I give it a 84% because I didn't see Roach magical reappears. I can't wait for season 2. Almost feel like torture just to wait... Expand

The action is thrilling, the costumes are fabulous, the dialogue is high fantasy at it's best. So why isn't it *great*? Because it juggles a lot and asks a lot of the audience, and for the first half of the 8 episode season, is super confusing. Multiple timelines slowly becoming one, without telling the audience that's what is happening is a bold move, and it works eventually. It's worth the ride, and I'm ungodly excited for season 2. Also, it does a great job NOT being super sexist, thank the lord. All the sex and nudity is actually for a reason and not exploitative, it's set the bar high for future fantasy. ITS GOOD. Expand

Might be slightly confusing for people who do not know the world of the witcher. Giving people realistic conversations that sound like all parties are fully aware and actually exist in the world without having it sound like a total expedition dump is not easy. Shows tend to go one of two ways. They try to hard to explain things and it's hard to believe in this fantasy world when you are watching characters who are acting like they been in the world as long you have. Or they go the game of thrones route and let people talk about history and wars and things that the viewer will not know about with risk of losing viewers because they don't understand what is happening. Game of thrones had perfect writing to drops little hints of lore whilst being engaging and getting people invested. Witcher does not have that. There is alot of lore dumping and not alot to grip you and pull you in unless you sell yourself on this world and the characters. If you are intrigued in the world though, if you can lose yourself in a bunch of characters and story it's a really fun ride. Expand

Expand

It is hard to adapt a collection of short-stories even if it in chronological order, but in the Witcher case, it wasn't, and this is the reason why they have to change plenty of thing, but they changed it in a very good and satisfying way. Completely boring and confusing at first because of a very poorly explained timeline, that's you only can understand at the end of the season (if you are a laymen
in analysis). So the episodes are hardly connected to the previous ones, and the story only begins to progress towards the end of the season. And when you get there
you are probably already lost in the drama and you are bored.

Watch this season as if it were a prelude because it focuses mostly on presenting the characters and universe of The Witcher.

In the more, the cast is amazing, Brazilian voice acting was phenomenal, well-made soundtrack, cool special effects and the characters with unique features.

The costumes are not very good and some characters are underestimating, but overall I liked it. Waiting for season 2!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a brilliant first Step in the Witcher Universe. Episode 1 hit a brutally good opening. After that the quality slightly did go down, but all in all it was a very good first Season.

The Characters are phänomenal, Henry Cavill is just the right Geralt also Anya Chalotra as Yennefer was spot on. Lot of the side characters are well written and good picked.

The Scenery, atmosphere and also the CGI moments are very good for this first step. It was a high production value.

So was there something "bad"? Yeah there were a litte bit of confusing writing and storytelling, which lead to moments where it was very hard to follow at all. Also some Characters like Triss Merigold were kinda underrepresented. Lastly a few, really only a few, CGI moments werent that good.

All in all highly recommended for Fans and for New people to the franchise.

Also Story gut, die Erzählungsart sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig. Expand

The staging of fights at a high level, the acting is not perfect, but also not bad. The plot, despite the modern interpretation of the book series, does not repel, but rather brings uniqueness. Do not forget that the series is an interpretation and not a retelling of the book. Scriptwriters may well allow themselves some (albeit significant) deviations from the book canon. Expand

Slower beginning, but great characters, interesting stories and amazing fight scenes definitely made up for it. I think casting was done almost perfectly and I’m in awe of Geralt’s and Yenn’s actors acting skills.

Too confusing which timeline the current scene plays in. Also, for people that don't know the backstory, some actions of certain characters may seem confusing. But my biggest critique is the weird sceneries. The overall color and styles are too different in each scene and don't match action. Somehow it wants to be that cruel, horror series but instead is all colorful with oversaturated high fantasy elements.
In the end, the series is pretty close to the books and will only unfold itself fully in season 2 when the first roman begins but for now, it wasn't either really or good or really bad. Nonetheless, I'm a fan of the universe and hyped for the next season.

The fight scenes are brutal and spectacular, the characters are written as interesting and grow throughout the series, and the directing looks beautiful, minus an odd use of vignette. If you’re a fan of the Witcher I could not recommend this more, my only gripe with the show is that some instances of the story seem to speed up a little too fast and can cause viewers to get lost in the time in which this tale takes place. Surprisingly, Henry Cavill was able to perfectly convey the image of Geralt and generally all other main actors did their part well. Personally, I see nothing bad of nudity presented in episodes, this is an adult story for an adult audience. At least, age rating should give you an idea of what might be there. There are two main downsides for me which lowers my overall score. Firstly, there is some discrepancy between the selected actors and their roles, which are completely different in appearance in the book canon. I am in principle dissatisfied with this excessive political correctness in the industry. Secondly, for those who are unfamiliar with The Witcher books or games it would be vary difficult to figure out what is going on here, maybe in the next seasons the viewer will become more clear what this story is about. Not an ideal work, but certainly does not deserve 0 points from a "professional" critic. Most likely, frankly bad things should be corrected, and good ones should be made better. I need a second season.

So i did say to my freind after 3 episodes that i really didnt like the witcher. Then i read some reviews (which didnt bother to watch further as well). I watched til the end. I really liked it. Listen to me!

Do not stop after watching 2 episodes. The first 2 episodes are just terrible. And in my opinion the third to fifth arent great as well but they feel like they are meant for soemthing better. They tried to introduce so many different characters. Annoying, dumb charcters i didnt care for. But also they did some speedrun with the development of Yennefer and Geralt. The saved the whole dilemma. There was a point in episode 6, when everything made sens. The characters started to feel more immersive. The story started to take off and so did the characters.

This season felt way too much like GoT. Also the looks of season one arent the greatest all the time. Sets looked so nice, that they where like plastic. Some characters are annoying and badly written (like this review). Hopefully there will be more witcher time in the future.

First two episodes easily 1 star.
3 - 5 gets around 2,5 to 3 stars.
But from there on its really really great. No annoying scenes, no nonsense. I started to assemble a timeline. Just a great adventure starting to get steamy! After all i loved it!

Who cares about the presence of diversity in this show? If the actor can deliver lines and personify the character effectively, does it matter if their skin color doesn't fit with Eastern European mythology? The mythology focuses (as it should) on the monsters from Eastern European mythology, not the race of people from there. It's a fantasy show; it doesn't even take place in Eastern Europe or in our universe for that matter. The race of the Witcher's actors should not influence review scores.

2. I think that this show is going to be very confusing for newcomers to the Witcher universe. Mousesack is basically there to inform the audience (quite often) about the Law of Surprise and destiny. I've read the books and played the games, so I know what is going on. I do think that the show's explanation of many aspects of the universe was rushed. Hopefully they build on the foundation in season 2 and allow a larger audience to buy into this show, because I think its really strong and has potential to get even better.

3. Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra, thank you. Geralt and Yen (sorry, Ciri, I know you're invaluable as well) are the center of this story, and you two nailed their individual personalities and their chemistry together. The flashbacks to the books and games that I had while watching this show were frequent because of your portrayal.

4. Rapid fire: action was fun, dialogue a mixed bag (main characters had better dialogue than supporting roles), and sets & costumes were up to par with other shows and movies of 2019. It was a fun ride to watch season one of this show, and I hope people give it a chance to grow into the powerhouse I think it can be. It's not quite there yet, but the future is bright for this show!

Show is great but I can understand that if a viewer did not read/plan any of the books or games, it would be hard to follow.

Live action recreation of the stories isn’t the best but definitely does an excellent job in comparison to all the poorly done ones we have seen over the years. This show is a great treat for all the fans out there and I hope they continue to improve and show more seasons.
