Wow what a pleasant surprise. I was coming in with tempered expectations. But oh man I'm here to tell you if you are a witcher fan you will be very pleased. But for the new comers maybe play the game read the book first to get immersed even more but I think if u havent it's just fine 2 solid.… Expand

The Witcher is not meant to be an overarching grand story like Game of Thrones, but more of a tale of the world as seen through the eyes of a monster hunter looking to avoid political turmoil. If you're a fan of the novels or games this show is fantastic. The timelines are skewed in the beginning but by the end they all make sense and come together perfectly. A lot of hate from people who dont know what they're watching.

Cavill absolutely nails Geralt of Rivia. Follows the source material very closely, and shines because of this. This is one of those shows that takes you a few minutes to adjust to, much like any new show pushing boundaries like Firefly, Star Trek or any other great show out there! The action is brutal and intense, the one liners from Geralt are hiliarious, and they explore important themes regarding the human condition and feminism (I'm a guy so easy there incels).

The cutting through time can be a bit disorienting at first but if you're more in it for the mystery (I never read the books) and you pay attention it truly is the best way to develop several characters very rapidly.

All that said. If you don't want to think and put things together then maybe just rewatch himym.

Pro tip - watch with subtitles on so you don't miss any important dialogue and turn up the brightness on your television a little.… Expand

I've never read the books but have played the games and this adaptation remains true to what I remember. The settings, costumes, cinematography, and overall great acting really bring everything to life in a way that is entertaining and compelling. It took me a few episodes to figure out which scenes were flashback versus present day, but I really liked that aspect of it. I have a few minor issues with things like Geralt switching between a British and American accent, Geralt using the wrong kind of sword for the fight he was in, Triss not having red hair, and a very low number of monsters, but those are easily overlooked. I'm hooked and can't wait for season 2. 8 out of 10

I had to give this a perfect 10 review just to offset the kooks who give it a straight up 0. It's a fictional story set in a fictional realm. It's not Medieval Europe. It's not even Earth.… Expand

This is an excellent adaptation. At least for any fan of the games. Even if you do not know the source material it should be easy to follow. I have never written a review about anything and published it online, but this time, I feel like I have to spread the word.
I came in with low expectations, since I saw some of the casting choices and the "meh" trailers. I should also sayI have never written a review about anything and published it online, but this time, I feel like I have to spread the word.
I came in with low expectations, since I saw some of the casting choices and the "meh" trailers. I should also say that I'm an avid fan of the games, although I have never read the books.

I was absolutely blown away by the show. It gripped me from front to finish with its fantastic acting, genius writing, epic music, perfectly timed humor, I could go on. From Geralt to Yennifer to Ciri to Queen Calanthe, the range on these actors in the multitude of situations they're put in is insane. They all portray their characters, as far as I am aware of, wonderfully. Storytellingwise, they conveyed, in the first episode alone, the chemistry between the different people and made me care for them enough that what came later in the episode really impacted me. I don't think there has ever been a series that has managed that with me. Usually, when writers make big scenes for characters that I've only just met, it falls flat on its face but not here. What the show also does is set up mysteries and unknown that are slowly unravelled and paid out immensely. Without spoiling too much, they make use of multiple timelines - something they don't outright say but that becomes clearer over the first few episodes. When these timelines are merged later, it is fluid, epic and makes sense. Not something I can say of most series, once again.
The action is some of the best I've ever seen, without the hollywood shaky cam. Everything is deliberate, brutal and visible. The timing on the humor had me laughing out loud more times than I remember, not just from Dandelion but Geralt and the entire cast.

Now to get to what every 0 here has pointed out: the casting. I had my concerns as well, as to whether those decisions are somehow indicators of other bad decisions. And whether it would rip me out of the immersion. But no. It could have - but it didn't, because everything else was so goddamned good. I stopped noticing already during the first episode. Maybe also because there were so few examples of where it went wrong. Sure, I'm kind of distanced from Triss because she isn't the Triss I know from the games, but her acting was great, really. Didn't throw me off too much, I just have to relearn some emotional attachments. This series is anything but a political message and to all those who are so convinced it is: you're just the same as the people who would like one to be in every movie. This series is a masterpiece. And I can't wait for more. Maybe in some parts with a smidge more budget so they can really run wild, but with what they did with so little, I have no qualms either way ;) .

P.S.: I love Dandelion. Just wanted to put that out there.… Expand

The geography is distinct from Eastern Europe which means it isn’t Europe.

Besides, why do people assume there are no black elves? Africa is where humans first evolved. Having black people in the setting isn’t unrealistic or surprising.

While I do wish they casted Triss as well as they did Yen, I’m not going to bring politics into a story. In the end, it’s a great show that only suffers from its ambition getting ahead of its limited resources. I recommend it to anyone that doesn’t get have seizures over skin pigment.… Expand

If you are fan of the books and of the game and lived in that world as long as I have, this is an adventure you need to go on. Characters are perfect, atmosphere and lore all spot on. Lives up to all the hype. Trust me give it a try.
