Very, very good show; it helps quite a bit if you know the lore. Only disappointments are Triss and the Nilfgaardian armor; other than that, thumbs up!

Just keep in mind it stands alone from that serious in numerous ways. It will take most who have not read the books and/or played the equally brilliant video games to be a bit lost as to the significance of the characters and overall story, but ride through the first several episodes and it will grow on you. Henry Cavill plays a fantastic Geralt of Rivia. I hope this series continues for at least five seasons. Expand

Cavill is great as Geralt and casting in general is well done. The Witcher is a true high fantasy setting which is a tough genre to pull off in film but Hissrich did a great job. The special effects are great for a first season (hopefully they improve as the show goes on) and the sword choreography is excellent (it puts GoT to shame in that area).

The show may be hard to follow for those new to the universe of The Witcher especially since it is told over multiple timelines that are not necessarily in order. Maybe read a short primer on the universe or the characters if this is the case, it is totally worth it. This is one of my few complaints about the season; it doesn’t always do the greatest job of telling you the timeline that is being depicted.

There is a shortage of true high fantasy setting shows of good quality so if you are a fan of the genre then definitely support this. For whatever it is worth Netflix earned a paid subscription from me for this show and for Stranger Things.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’d like to start off with saying the show is great, however, it has a slow start until episode 4. Episode 4 is when the series really starts to come together, and the plot only escalates from there. Without spoiling anything, the finale of this show is so satisfying (although it is a cliffhanger) that it made the entire season worth it. Expand

The acting is superb from the main cast, especially Henry Caville, who is able to play the subtle emotions of the emotionally surpressed superhuman mutant witcher that he represents on screen. Yennifer's acting is well done as well. The only issue with season 1 is the nature of the source material. Most of what goes on in season 1 is only mentioned in the first books in passing or is represented as a collection of disjointed short stories. As such, it was an extreme challenge to make it fit on the screen; yet they still made it work. If you pay attention, you can follow this series pretty well.

There are some insertions of forced diversity into this largely Polish and European setting, but it is done with class, unlike some movies lately such as the new starwars where all the diversity is given to the good guys while the bad guys are all "white males". The diversity hires are inserted equally and not given more power or authority than the expected polishfrench descended people. The CG is adequate, and "gets the point across", but don't expect something akin to game of thrones just yet.

Overall, an amazing experience.

It's not trying to be a blockbuster, it's actually trying to focus on characters and story in the format of a tv-series and I find it highly successful at it. It's not competing with the books nor the games. It's holding it's own ground's and that's pretty rare. If you're a fan of good old adventure and fantasy movies this is probably your jam. It was a bit too fan service, the story was interesting but told in an uninteresting way, and one of the characters was strangely out of place in her own plot. When they killed her off, I was relieved and prepared to go on; I was rewarded.

The show captures both aspects of the games and the books very well in a way that I think has something for everyone. My girlfriend, who has no interest in games or fantasy, was able to sit through almost the entirety of the show—something she can't do for almost every fantasy cinema.

I think the reason is that Geralt is just played so well; he's an imperfect badass who smells bad. He nails the witcher voice from the games in almost every case (except when he randomly adds an accent that's almost like an American trying to do a British accent and failing). He also has the physic and the movements of Geralt from the games.

I think Yennifer is played well, but I was hoping to see her turn a bit more snooty as the show went on. I think her shield of proper-ness could be a bit more fleshed out. The organization of the show is something that I was expecting in a fantasy series, but it leads into a climactic point and enhances the story telling in a way that turns each of the shows into a piece of a larger puzzle. I think I prefer this to it being purely Episodic.

As far as these low critic reviews, I think someone is upset about something. I've seen them focus on aesthetic, or calling certain people "incel" and I think it's clear they weren't at all open to a Universe that is both chaotic and dark. I'm not sure what they were expecting in watching the show, but their input seems wanting. TL;DR:
It has an abnormally hard-to-get-through first show (all shows have a hump in the first several episodes), but it delivers a great series that I think will make book and game fans happy. I also think, based on my girlfriend, this has an interesting enough plot that might make fans out of newcomers. Most negative critic reviews seem caught up on unimportant aspects.

Well, i have mixed feelings for this but in overall i was amazed and i respect the director because it was loyal to the books!
We were in need of an actor that was a genuine gamer, he played the games,was a fan of them,knew who is Geralt and i am glad that Cavill was the choice. I didn't like some other picks like triss and yen (mostly for the appearance) but yen was not that bad, she did her best i believe. Dantelion was amazing too!
Now for the plot... If you haven't read the books and you haven't played the games then it will be a complete mess because the storyline doesn't play with the right order.
The music was good in overall but i was hoping for the Percival band to make the OST...
Anyways, i am looking forward for the next season, it will be a lot better i believe because now they have a bigger budget.

Firstly, I can totally understand why there are negative reviews related to the film making in the initial episodes. The dialogue feels dry, the costumes look plastic and the exposition is confusing. However, this is really the show just catching its stride. Eventually it becomes the Witcher we know and love. Especially by episode 3-4 the show brings everything together and we are on our way. There are a lot of shows out there with more polish but nothing with the heart of the Witcher lore. A lot of the 0 scores on here seem to be based on a perceived SJW narrative. Guys, they are just black actors. Hiring black actors isn't a SJW narrative. People from all backgrounds want to see themselves reflected in the characters on screen. It's just made for a broad audience. It's a fictional universe where the colour of your skin has no impact on character building. It isn't a historical drama where such criticisms might be more reasonable. Expand

I was ready to put this show in the same bin as every other video game adaptation that has ever happened, but it surprised me. It genuinely felt like the Witcher, which was almost unbelievable to me. Who ever directed this did a damn good job at actually making it feel like the games. On top of all that the fighting is bad ass. No stupid ridiculous fight scenes that you see in every other show/movie. These scenes are something else entirely. The one thing that held me up with the time line skipping around. It was hard to follow along at times but its entirely possible I was not paying attention fully. There are also so corny spots like when Yenefer is chanting some weird chant on the bed with her **** out and also some corny dialog here and there. Many people may not like the diversity in this show and even myself as a black I was like (hmm a black elf, that's... I don't know) and the reason people may have a problem with that it's because elves have probably not represented like that, so we grew up with this idea. The point is that; this is a fantasy television show. Expand

Great show. It condensates the very complex themes in the novels in an easy to digest format. The series is not perfect due to the lack of proper introduction to the world of the Witcher and a better explanation for the timeline

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1) Bad points:

* Duration: Eight episodes for a season is very little
* Confusing timeline: Temporary jumps can confuse distracted people
* Insuficient use of certain events: The battles and Fall of Cintra, could last three or four episodes more.
* Triss Merigold: The actress's appearance does not fit than the book.
* Chapter 6: The kiss between Gerald and Yennefer in battle is unnecessary and uncomfortable

2) Positive points:
* Developers care the details
* Appearance of the characters according to the books (most)
* They abord the background of the story, without going directly to the main books Impresive soundtrack
* Details in the start section: The change of the logo according to the chapter is impressive
* Premium cast
* Intelligent dialogues
* Creatures and special effects at the height of other works Appeal to the viewer's emotions
* Effects of blood and violence without censorship
* Romantic background tackled propertly
* Politics and intrigues
* It is realistic, without always seeking happy endings, although it may bother the viewer

Wonderfully executed. A must see un netflix.
Henry Cavill steals the show as the white wolf. Almost perfect, the one detail is that it has some story issues as it's a little caotic but excelent.

But After watching the First 2 Episodes i began to love his style and how good he played geralt in the series. I also didn't had a Problem with yennefer in the series, i Think the actress played the Role very good. Cirilla was also no Problem but i hope in the future, the actress is aware of the Role that she is playing,because cirilla is the most Important character in the whole witcher universe,and i was shocked when i heard that both,the actress of ciri and yennefer, wasn't aware of the Role that they were playing. I can imagine the pressure that those 2 actress have on their shoulders. All in all a must watch series for the witcher Franchise Fans, but there is one thing that really get on my nerves, and it is the reason why i only give 9/10 Points. It is because of triss actress. I can't say how much i lovvvveeeeeee triss, it was always my favorite character After geralt, and i have her on the same Spot as ciri,because i really really like ciri and i really really love triss. She is such a sweet, lovely, cute ,handsome, super good looking but also badass character in the witcher games. I can just repeat myself to infinity at how much i love this character. But when i saw her for the first time in the series, i was just soooooooo disappointed. Yes, i know that in the books she has brown hair, but i didn't liked the actress at all. I'am sorry but she just looked like a 53 years old Lady and for me she was so unsympathetic, and her look, i didn't liked how she looked at all, the face Impression just made her so unsympathetic. It was really hard for me to accept her in the series. I'am sorry for the actress, but they should have choosed a much better actress than her, an actress that looked more like triss from the games, because 80% of the People Knows the witcher from the games. I would like to see triss with red hair in the series, so that the actress looks more like her. After all i would give the witcher series a 9/10 because it is only 1 actress that i don't like. Expand

I understand the history of the franchise but I have little issue with that, certainly not enough to rate it 0-3. I enjoyed it a lot, the fights were good and it felt very Witcher to me. It is true enough to the series but some changes, I don't believe a strict adaptation would be good or satisfying though. My partner has never read the books or played the games and she followed along easily. Though some other reviews claim that you would struggle without that experience. Honestly, my girlfriend is kinda dumb, so her managing to follow speaks volumes.

Anyway, watch it and decide for yourself, certainly don't make a decision based on any reviews (I realise that might seem stupid coming from a review). It's increasingly clear that both professional and audience reviews are becoming more useless and washed down.

1. I did not like the actress who plays Triss;
2. It looks a little cheap (a small budget affected, but everything looks exactly fine);
3. Geralt lacks a little bit of emotion;
4. And the last is what I think is completely subjective, but lacks a little dirt. The period of the Middle Ages is nonsense, I judge so because it is my favorite genre of something.
And so I absolutely liked the series. I judge only by a series of games, the book, so far, have not read, but plan.

The Witcher does not pretend to be GoT. It is wonderfully convoluted in its own way. The pacing is good (I watched Scorsese's epic The Irishman in one sitting, so I don't have a problem with the show taking its time). It gets frenetic and takes its time as and when needed. Is it a perfect rendition of the beloved fantasy epic? Of course not, such a thing does not exist!(Except maybe The Witcher 3: the Wild Hunt) That being said it does the series justice with its tone and world-building. A few casting choices could have been better or maybe the actors could have done a better job. However, all the roles that matter from Geralt to Yennefer have all been depicted excellently. Each episode of the series is better than the last. If this trend continues, this show will be a classic indeed.
P.S. The Witcher is NOT GoT. Get over it and you might just enjoy the show.
