Pretty good series about The Witcher`s Universe.
Too underrated, but it has a lot of disadvantages:
    - Strange casting (black elves and Vigo, Triss-romal)
    - Too much unspoken and too much unnecessary
    - Nilfgaardian armor

But, in summary, The Witcher is fine and **** for fans and geeks.

Many have built false expectations about this series. Someone lacks canonicality, someone epic, there are those who were waiting for the film adaptation of the game. This series is not for such people. There is everything for which they do not like netflix. I loved this series because it updates the feelings that I had while reading books and playing the witcher. The Witcher does not have the Budget of HBO GOT but delivers a very good series.
All the actors do a fantastic job. Its not a perfect series but still very very enjoyable.
I like a adult content because its how it is and how it should be.
I dont understand people who vote 0 / 10 just because some actors dont match the skin colour. Thats just sad. After watching all 8 episodes. Its a 9/10 for me

I think It's very good SERIES if you don't compare with the game. The plot worse(worse!, but quite good) than in book, but it's typical problem for all films and series in our time. Good music and beautiful picture. It worth your time.

The casting for the show is perfect! I was worried about how they would introduce the show but it played just as the books! I cannot wait for season 2! There are many little clues as to whats happening that can be easily missed so its not a show that you can watch and surf your phone etc if you go in not knowing the story. And the ending was amazing!

Awesome awesome awesome awesome. The writing is so good that I had to re-watch the entire season one with subtitles and kept pausing it to read over and over the script. If you loved the video games, this show perfectly encapsulates all the intrigue, adventure and horror. Some of the monsters are truly scary and terrifying. There is a lot of world building going on in the first few episodes along with multiple plot threads and different timelines. It can get confusing but your patience will be rewarded.

I would have probably could have agreed with the current average score of 7.5, but the final episode pulled together a lot of the story, and made the journey more interesting to me in the end. Some CG could have been a bit better, and some scenes made me cringe a bit, but I thought the season did a good job of setting up the characters, and introducing viewers to the world. I can't understand some of the bad reviews complaining about diversity. This is a show made for a worldwide audience in the 2020's, based on a book made in the 1990's. It should not be shocking to anyone that the show needed more diversity than the books, or video games. None of the casting took away from the show, or the lore in my opinion. It will only make the show better, and more interesting.

It's not a show for someone who doesn't know about the witcher because it lacks in background, still it's not for fans because there are too many mistakes.
The actors are dogs mainly Henry performs a poor Geralt always with that grin.
Mistakes on customization, mistakes in characters (black Triss is just unbelivable sad), errors of regia between scenes, poor special effects and fights...

I have played the games and read all the short stories. Most of the episodes are based on the short stories and therefore it was a lot easier for me to follow what was going on. In addition, the season contains time jumps within episodes without even making it clear to the viewer that is what is happening. This along with a lack of exposition about the world can make it difficult for someone new to the witcher to fully comprehend just how important some of the events they are seeing are to the world of the show. It would have been helpful if the writing had more world building in it for people who have no background knowledge about the witcher universe. The violence may be a bit too intense for some and this is not a show where people usually get to live happily ever after. All in all I think its worth watching the show and the more you learn about the world of the witcher the more it will all start to make sense and begin to click. I gave a score of 10. The show is worth a 9 but unfortunately you have people leaving zeros (there is no way a zero is justified) which just screws up the overall rating system Expand

The timelines are a bit strange, but anyone with half a brain can figure it out. Critics probably still have tunnel vision on Game of Thrones, as this is NOT GOT, and should be taken as its own completely seperate thing. The EW review in particular is asinine, and that reviewer didnt watch all the episodes- its a joke. The usual anti-sjw snowflakes of course showed up because there are minorities in it- so in expected fasion, they review bombed it like the little insecure babies they are. Really disappointed at Triss cast, they could have dyed her hair at least, I'm a huge Triss fanboy and the one in the show just doesn't click with me. The Dandelion is fantasy Ed Sheeran which is hilarious, and the music written for him is a highlight of the show for me. Also I wish the show didn't squish all of the timelines together, I read the books and it left me really confused at first, and my gf who doesn't know about the universe had zero idea of what's going on and I had to explain a lot which is not ideal for a show.

I gave a chance to the series and it did not disappoint me. Over time, I was imbued with sympathy for the characters in the series and no longer experienced discomfort. People who find fault with such things and various trifles seem to me biased and too conservative. Sometimes, it seems to me that they are trying to amuse their pride in this way, thereby showing that they read books compared to some. I am sincerely sorry for such people, because they are fixated on trifles and are unable to enjoy a good series. Watching the series, I did not feel discomfort about the races. The image of Kalante and Yennifer are quite feminist in the series and, in principle, this corresponds to their characteristics in the books. Ciri in the book was either lesbian or bi. The series is not one of those that you can run in the background and do household chores. You must be very careful not to miss important details. The plot is messy, but this is not a script problem. It is rather a problem of the source. The first season of the series is based on the first two books of Sapkowski, which were not novels, but cycles of stories and are chaotic in themselves. As for me, the creators of the series managed to streamline the Geralt storyline better than it was in the stories. This film adaptation has surpassed its literary source. The creators managed to do this with the help of their freedom in the plot. With all due respect to Sapkovsky, he was not a drama guru, and most people found out about his books thanks to the witcher’s game series, which continued the plot from the books. Almost all the creators' liberties in the plot added drama and were created in order to better adapt the plot to the cinema. Moreover, all ideas and meanings have been preserved. In the series, the internal conflicts of the characters are much better developed. The characters look more multifaceted than in the cycles of Sapkovsky's stories. The picture and dialogs are good, but not perfect. The creators have something to work on. Of the advantages I want to especially highlight the musical accompaniment in the series, added humor and fighting scenes. The series has great potential. (Sorry for my English) Expand

Great acting, great cinematography, Henry Calvin is amazing, i really love Gerald's personality and story. Yennefer is a complex character and i enjoyed every second of her being in the spotlight. The plot is fantastic in my opinion and the way things are put together is refreshing for today's tv shows market

Spends a bit too much time setting up the story, plot and characters, if you are unfamiliar it will be very overwhelming what is happening, who is who and where the current on screen story is taking place due to erratic time skips. Some casting choices are a bit on the safe side but overall Herny Cavill, Freaya Allan and Anya Chalotra are great castings for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Only the casting of Triss Merigold is a bit of a head scratcher, while she doesn't play a huge part yet in the series she will judging by the Books and Game. Triss being such a big name in the Witcher universe it was weird not having her play a bigger role in the story.

Overall I'd recommend anyone to watch until the third episode to give it a real shot, has decent fights, true to lore monsters, politics, nudity and overall good acting. Only major downfall of the first season was the slow burn, plodding story for the first few episodes and 1 or 2 uhhhh okay at best CGI moments but nothing thats a show killer. More budget and time and this could be a great show for years to come.

Oh and don't let the "critics" reviews give you a bad impression, let those idiots go back to drooling over a meh at best Star Wars Rise of Skywalker and a terrible end to Game of Thrones that they seemed to love. I think they watched completely different things than we did.

    What I did like:
    - the combat scene in episode 1, there should be more of that
    - the character development of Yennifer, (I have no idea why the Witcher didn't get the same treatment from the get go)
    - I like the epic setting but this clearly is not made for people that aren't experts in the lore.

I think that was an entertaining show and I enjoyed it.
Of course there were some negative points here, mostly the non linear parts of the storytelling.
I was confused especially by the fourth episode, where the plot revolves around a much younger queen Calanthe and her soon to be married daughter which was a story in the past, and then the camera suddenly jumps to Yennefer sitting in a chariot with Queen Lyria, a story playing in the future. I have yet to find out, why they put that plot in there.

Also the entire Yennefer back story arc was probably from the past.
The writers struggled to give all of the main characters a backstory and they didn't manage to work it in seamlessly.

Many who read the books probably had something different in mind for the show, so if you're one of them, you'll probably have plenty of complaints about the show.
I think the cast was good, they played their characters convincingly. Henry Cavill was a very good pick as the lead. I liked the writing and the dialog was actually really good at times. I liked Cavill's deadpan delivery of his wisdom, also providing some very dry humor.

There was enough suspense, excitement and fun and I didn't see the plot turns coming. And that's a good thing. Yes, there is nudity, some boobies and a bit of lovemaking, but tasteful enough.
I wanted to say 'not offensive' but some people are so easily offended.
The fight scenes were well choreographed, the special effects where good enough.
You can't expect top notch CGI in a TV show, especially if it heavily relies on those.
The sheer number of effects would make it too expensive.

I for one, am looking forward to season 2. I recommend giving 'The Witcher' a try!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who never read the books, and only played the games, my opinion is that the show is "good". Not fantastic, but definitely enjoyable.

I think the production values are very high, the direction was competent, but that the writing was a little on the weak side, specifically in certain episodes (like episode 4). If they're looking to compete with the likes of Game of Thrones, they need to find better writers. I especially didn't like how inconsequential Ciri's plotline was. Her entire season can be summed up as "Escaped Nilfgaardians -> Found Geralt". Didn't help that the final episode was basically Yennifer's show, so the meeting of Geralt and Ciri at the end had less impact than it should have.

I'm also not really a fan of them going for this triad of lead characters. IMO they should have focused on Geralt. But if anything Yennifer had more of a fleshed out story. And considering her character isn't really that likeable for a good 2/3 of the season, that was a problem. Perhaps she'll be better after Sodden.

As for the acting, I think it was really good. Ciri, Triss and Yennifer met my expectations. And I liked Cavill's interpretation of Geralt, even though it doesn't exactly match my idea of him.

Overall I think season 1 was a success and I look forward to season 2, especially if they can find some better writers.

It's got some marvellously fun moments but they're too far and in between to serve as a satisfying distraction from the bland acting, stale dialogue and uninspired direction. Definitely watchable but despite the 10mil per episode budget it feels unpolished and amateurish.

If only it had also received the same love and polish that went into making the game. From the start, Henry Cavill does justice to Geralt of Rivia, as he plays the monotone white wolf like we know him. He is quick and smart with his answers, and follows a code: He only kills monsters. The world around him constantly challenges him to make a choice, usually making him endure scolding or a tragedy.

The acting in this show is quite good! Yennefer has her own character arc, and lives up to become the mysterious, beautiful and charismatic sorceress that steals Geralt's (and the viewer's) heart. Ciri appears, and her tumultuous youth and escape from cintra shape her early story. As characters go, the show is spot on! The Witcher show takes some liberties with the lore though, by downright breaking it. If anyone knows anything about the localisation in the Witcher universe, they would know that dark skinned people are from kovir. In the show however, it's a freaking lottery. Random people in the kingdoms, and even Fringilla Vigo and Vilgefortz, are dark skinned even though they are clearly not from Kovir origin. This was clearly a choice by the showrunner on purpose to make the cast more 'politically correct' and 'progressive.' Such a shame, as this could have been achieved without breaking the lore. The time line in this show is all over the place. At first you might think these events happen at the same time, but that's not the case at all. Yennefer's arc actually starts over 30 years before the scenes with Geralt, and the parts with Ciri are many years after those with Geralt. As there's no mention of it at first, this will be rather confusing for many who don't know the lore.

I have to say, a lot of the sets look rather fake. It has this overly clean and new look to it that makes it look off. Had the production team tried to make it look more worn, it would have been more atmospheric and immersive.

And something that dissapointed me about the season is the small amount of times Geralt actually fights a monster. Episode 4 and 6 both start with Geralt having already killed something, and not showing the battle. As a positive though, the show tries to use as little CGI for the monsters as possible, which i think greatly improves immersion.

As you can tell, the show has positives and negatives. But in the end the show is quite entertaining to watch, and as a Witcher game enthusiast i can recommend it to people who have a interest coming from the games.

Upon finishing the first season i was already excited for the second one, and i think Netflix is heading in the right direction with this. What needs to improve though is the inclusion of more monster fights, the sets need to look more realistic, and give this show a bigger budget. I give this season a 7/10. It is a good show!

Though I was sometimes confused about stuff because timeline/plot jump without context sometimes. 0-voting because you hate "woke" & "diversity" can feel like projection from crybabies sometimes. And it's tough adapting "complex on paper" to "more simple on screen," and plus, c'mon folks, it's the FIRST SEASON, JFC..

Critiquing story/plot in the sense that this was probably never ever going to be 100% true to the books is fair, but people need to let up on bashing Netflix just for adding some diversity. I understand that people want to "see themselves" on screen, and that's fair, even if not "accurate." I DO care about the cast being good though, and some people were just kinda alright. Anyways, just letting the reader know ahead of time that tons of the mad people are just being children that wish everything were THEIR conservative, purist tastes.

Played W2 & W3, and a bit of W1, and read only a bit of the first book. I think the professional critics are rating this too low, but there are definitely some things I did not like. Here are things I liked first though:

    -Superman as Geralt
-The actresses that played Renfri, Yennefer & Solaia
    -Geralt & Yen scenes
    -Good dialogue, often funny
-The show's "graphics" are pretty tasty
    -Great atmosphere
    -Some scenes are perfect
    -Feels like good fan-service
-Magic is mostly cool in this show

Okay now what I don't like:

-ONLY 8 EPISODES?! I NEED MY FIX.
-What's with all these NON-GERALT OF RIVIA SCENES? I'M HERE FOR MY BOY!
-Lots of random ass characters getting elevated storywise at the expense of Geralt of Rivia scenes. If you're going to take me away from Geralt of Rivia it should be for Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, etc (the Gang, so to speak), and even then I would rather you quickly come back to Geralt.
-IDK how I feel about the actress that plays Triss. Maybe it's because she looks nothing like the video games though.
-Actually, many characters don't look like how they are depicted in the games, which is gonna annoy people.
-I don't think this is too "new user" friendly. Would recommend this only to the already-initiated.
-Why so much focus on "Nilfgaard bad?"
-Not sure if Yen's main motivation is what it is in the books, but feels kinda random and makes her seem more "traditional" at the expense of her JUST being a powerful woman.
-Yennefer's dress with the cages on the shoulders makes her look skinny, Yennefer is already more of a full-bodied woman in the games
-Not sure if Geralt would ever yell at Dandelion, but that definitely hurt my soul :(
-Ciri's scenes are just awful sometimes, not the actor's fault, but her arc is just kinda boring,
    -"NO" GERALT IN SEASON FINALE
-Some of the characters act stupid, in ways that undermine previous behaviors or just change attitude drastically at certain points.
-Some scenes are kinda bad, ngl, I love CDPR & I'm HEAVILY anticipating next season but yeah, it's rough sometimes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I spent like 5000 hours on the game, even though I hated it at first. Just like the game, the series takes time to get into, no matter if you roughly know what's going on or not. The did a really poor job at signposting that all the episodes play at different timelines, with the mother of Ciri, Pavetta, looking so similar to her that I was totally lost when she got married to a hedgehog knight. In general I love the tone of the movie between brutality and humor, but especially when you have played the third game, you'll find the colour of the series a bit flat and bland. The world painted in the books and games was very beautiful and colourful in its glory (Toussaint) or misery (Vellen). Here it looks mostly meh. Still, the characters are awesome and i dug the way they did Geralt, Yennefer and the supporting cast. I for one cannot wait for Season 2 after the final battle of season 1. This was a very promising opener and hints at a potentially awesome franchise. Expand

I'm not really sure why this show is getting so many "0" scores. I'm also not entirely sure if most of the critics and viewers who gave it such low ratings actually watched the entire series? I didn't think that the first season of The Witcher from Netflix was a masterpiece, but I also didn't think it was so terrible that it had NO redeeming qualities (which a score of 0/10 would suggest).I'm not really sure why this show is getting so many "0" scores. I didn't think that the first season of The Witcher from Netflix was a masterpiece, but I also didn't think it was so terrible that it had NO redeeming qualities (which a score of 0/10 would suggest). From the couple of die-hard fans of the books that I spoke to prior to the show's release, it was evident that they were likely to be unhappy about the show regardless of how it actually turned out. All that being said, I think there were certainly a few areas that could have been better. It took several episodes for the show to really get going, and establish who the main characters were. Without any prior knowledge of the franchise, I can definitely see how someone could feel a bit lost after the first episode. By the end, I thought that the characters and their motivations etc were satisfactorily fleshed out. Still, the last episode felt more like a half-way point for what the story arc of Season 1 should have been, had twice as many episodes been produced instead of the paltry 8 episodes. Overall, I'd give The Witcher a hopeful 7/10. I think that if the show runners listen to critics/fans about the shortcomings of Season 1, they can certainly be remedied when the next season begins production early this year. Expand

I have seen the first three episodes and so far i think it's more than good. I'm very weak for high fantasy and gothic styles and that's something that the series circles around. I have played the game (Never read the books though) but is more interested in lore and geography. For those who are new in the Witcher world it can be messy to under where they are as Ciri is in Cintra, Yennefer in Aedirn while Geralt is in Redania, Kaedwen and in the third episode Temeria. That something that Game of Thrones did right they presented the regions first and their nature so the viewer always knew where they were. The character's journeys feels very distant from each other and it feel more like we watch three different shows at the same time. Yen's back story revealed is both good and bad. It's kind of what one expected of Yen and very fitting but on the same time is the mystery around the character gone. When it's come to casting non-white characters don't really bother me that much especially on the less relevant characters but they shouldn't do that on Triss who is very relevant and she look nothing like the canon. The show also lacks the slavic representation that the games did good. In conclusion i like the three main characters. All has good stories and the acting is very good. I also like the high fantasy theme and that the world is circled around magic. They need to explain where the character is and make the stories closer so we acrually watches one show and not three show on the same time

Really enjoyed this, I've played the games and read the books. It's great to see some of those moments on the screen. Loved the performance from all the cast and the scenery looked amazing.

I expect that if this is the first thing you are seeing of the Witcher it may take a few episodes to get into it, it could be a little confusing Overall very enjoyable.

I'm not normally a 'down with professional critics' guy. I have a lot of respect for criticism as a profession, but I think enough critics got this one plain wrong that I needed to speak up. I actually really liked what they did with different time periods in the storytelling. It creates a little confusion, but in my experience a good kind of confusion that eventually leads to an 'A-ha!' of realization. The only criticism there is that the writing does sometimes struggle to convey not the time period, but the passage of time, leading to some whiplash as we move through each character's story.

Cavill's depiction of Geralt is really good. I was skeptical of his casting, and really skeptical after seeing early promotional set photos, but in the end I was really impressed. Of the two other key roles, I thought Anya was pretty good in the early parts of the story where Yennefer is still unsure of herself, but struggles to muster the charisma of peak Yen. Freya as Ciri does a solid job with what she is called on to do, but her part isn't as demanding so far. Of the rest of the cast, I thought the real standout was Jodhi May, really knocking that character out of the park at different parts of her story.

Other things that spring to mind are that the CGI is pretty 'meh' throughout, occasionally threatening to derail the experience. Dialogue writing is competent throughout, and better than that in places. Fight choreography seemed like a solid B+ to me. Cinematography was consistently very good, often striking without foolishly trying to reproduce Wild Hunt's amazing visuals.

On the whole, I found it to be very compelling, and solid across the board, despite being a very ambitious show.

Great prequel to a real story. I hope this is just a beginning and second season will pick up the pace of everything. Nice music, great fighting scenes - kinda sad that only few of them in whole season.

Я остался довольным. -1 балл за некотрые мелочи (ну например дриады, арбалеты, серьёзно?)
    Жду 2 сезона.

This is wonderfully entertaining. Great casting. My god Yennefer is gorgeous. I would really like to thank Henry Cavill for taking this so seriously and committing to the role. Just watched the whole season once, but, will watch it again because it is great entertainment. I also tell that the Witcher is a complicated IP, it has a lot of characters which are not fully introduced yet as this is only a first season, maybe those who played at least one of the Witcher games or books should be completely sure about this, I've played The Witcher 3 and as I have not found much worthy cinematic or TV series based on video games, I can say, for sure, this is the one we waited for. I was worried this wouldn't be as good, but it's such a really well made version. If you also care about politics and all that, well, I don't think there was any of that, the cast works, the plot is great as I said, the whole worlds looks fantastic, there are some good fighting scenes, not so much monsters yet, lots of magic and creatures. I would give it 10, but, at some points, the series gets too slow for my taste. Expand

As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
