The show is really good, high production value, good acting jobs by the cast all around and lots of action scenes.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, can't wait for Season 2!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Acting is good but nothing spectacular. Including Cavill as Geralt. But he convinced me, and I think I will see him in more positive light later in show Freya Allan is actually very good.
It looks to me like most of the comments here giving 10.0 is artificial. Nothing justify that high score! Not if you are fan of books/game and it is even less likely if you new to it. The show is rather bad. But if you are teen or big fan of fantasy, then you may still like it. But giving it 10? No way. I watched first episode and may continue it another day, but without enthusiasm. One of the best short stories from the books, is trimmed mercilessly in order to push some well known 'fall of the kingdom' drama cliche into episode. It could be add later on, in couple of short scenes, as retrospective. But no. We have to say it all "again" at start, to have that "grand opening" that someone envisioned. I'm really open to new ("old" I should say) ideas, but it have to work well. Instead it ends up with utter lack of tension! They had great book do adapt, and safe would be to keep plot close to it. Even if it would end up being miniseries. The problem is: Sapkowski short stories are really well written. There is not much to cut off or trim from it without destroying it utterly.
Fighting scenes do not work either. All bogus. It lacks of speed it lacks of "reality" - that may not the best word for it, as some better CGI is also needed. But above all much more production time and effort! Also stunt doubles. Martial art masters? Would it be so difficult to hire some? We do not need Cavill doing it all by himself. Without high quality fighting choreography this show will not fly. Unfortunately money went on horses instead. But not for the music, is terrible! Violence and sex all PG-13. That I can understand. But some of the stuff i do not get at all. For instance in first episode Geralt is being told by other characters that he needs new clothes (repeatedly - It may be that they "think" he stinks, after bath in the swamp, but it ended up about cloths in dialogues. Magician door is open for everyone. Guarded only by illusion. But worst is that in last scene Geralt leaves market first, in result allowing Sorcerer to continue his intended work. What kind of men would do that?! So our main character is compromised already. Not the Geralt I like or respect.

Rare to see an actor with so much passion about the character he's playing. I feel it shows in his performance and was definitely pleasantly surprised.

The games aren't identical to the books and they're still strong. I think this is off to a good start and I hope they build strongly on these foundations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Terrible show with badly cast actors, awful writing, awful lighting (everything looks grey), FX, scenography, etc. etc. Dialogues were poorly written, they've added some new scenes which are atrocious (like Yennefer's training), plus they omitted some good ones from the books. There are constant jumps in space and time which makes this show hard to follow for those who don't know the books. Not to mention that going from one place to another and from one time to another diminishes the roles of each character and in the end we don't get to know either of them. Expand

Who cares if they jumble the stories around to make more sense for a show.

What I believe these people mean is that they are angry the show wasn’t cast “white enough”. Yennefer isn’t the pale sorceress as described in the books, Triss is changed to a person of color. There are many others I suppose. I think the cast was great! NONE of the changes effect the story in any way, shape or form. I maybe would have an issue with the main character being changed because his look is so iconic at this point.

My actual score is an 8 for the show, but to help offset the spammed zero scores I’m giving it a 10. The acting is GREAT. I can’t think of one actor who didn’t do fantastic. The storytelling moves a bit slow and feels disjointed at times, I would think especially for those unfamiliar with the books. The lighting and color grading are very good and consistent.

The effects are mostly good. All are high enough quality for a show like this. The practical effects are superb (the Striga fight!) but the cgi is a mixed bag. Cgi creatures are passable for the most part, but if you are hoping for GOT level Dragons and cgi you will be disappointed. The atmospheric and environmental cgi effects are fantastic, however. From the spell effects to the depiction of terrain and strongholds, it’s all top quality.

Hopefully the show is set for a second season right away and they can improve upon what they have created here, which is solid.

Totally understand some of the negativity and makes sense, totally do not understand some other parts of the general negativity. The racial tensions exist within the canon itself and is a constant point of contention humans vs elves vs dwarves vs monsters vs mages vs queens vs kings vs women vs men and so on and so forth. For everyone who has the capability to separate themselves from the political road-maps of our current generation there is good-slow story telling and some amazing portrayals of beloved characters and I urge everyone to make up their own minds after completing the show, positive or negative experience from your own minds and not from what everyone says how you 'Should' feel.

    The Good
I have only played The Witcher 3, neither the books nor the first two games have any influence on me and also neither does racial representation and or political agendas, unless I get it forcefully shoved down my throat without some form of organic reason for it existing.
The only things that give my joy a pause while watching a story being told is unskilled actors, writers, editors and directors. So believe me when I say I absolutely hated Cavill in Man of Steel and the movie itself more so on a storytelling level.
But after watching Count of Monte Cristo and Fallout I believed that maybe my insipid taste for Cavill was not for his acting. I am happy the Character of Geralt was where my misconceptions of Henry being a bad actor were totally resolved.

I do not know if there is some post recording artificial modulation to his voice but it is as if Doug Cockle leaped out from the game and took on Henry's form as Geralt of Rivia, his grunts his sighs his inflections and the single worded "F#CK's" were some of the best moments. Geralt/Henry is the absolute best thing about this show and I say this on all levels from his character writing, dialogue writing and appearance which means hats off to the costume department. The casting for everyone else was well done and based on what I saw did not feel forced due to beliefs or agendas, everyone who played their roles played them well and did so with passion which always bring out the best in everything.

The show itself is well written and slow thankfully taking it's time setting up the frankly vast sea of world building that exists for the franchise. The direction as well is competent as well as decent cinematography hold this show up along with the aforementioned Geralt portrayal.

    The Bad
A few things a bit lacking though and I believe this would be solved with some more finesse, some of the editing is a little bit lacklustre especially during the battle scenes. It is clear that Henry has spent time with swords for this portrayal but it always seems that the cameras keeps shying away from the battle scenes couple this with some not so great editing for these scenes make the eventual gory finishers not as satisfying. Some of the pacing also drops at certain places but spends some time fleshing the characters out which makes it acceptable. The whole two timelines thing was a bit jarring in a few places as you are not too sure of the time frame for what is happening but this is minute since the climax episode brings it all to an end in a way that sorts this out.

Thank god she at least has a smattering of freckles. I think I really like Yennefer here though so good news! And the wardrobe she gets to parade around in...
Apart from that, yeah great start. Give me more of it. Characters are all likeable, the world feels a long way from black and white and production values seem excellent.
There is room for this show to grow into what it should be. A faithful recreation of the story and feeling of the world of The Witcher, even if your casting was driven from a less-than-faithful narrative to turn the story into something it wasn't.

This show is worth watching. It is overall enjoyable but there are a lot of problems that are made as a choise by creators. There are few battle scenes, but when they are on screen it is great fun. Henry is really good with a sword and i loved watching him fight every single time, especially in the first episode or the monster in ep3. Main trio of the cast is good, they have problems again but compared to rest of the cast it is far less glaring.

Now the thing that glare most obviously is the blafication of eastern europe setting. We have black elves, black dryads(makes no sense deep in the forest) or intentional change of characters with lighter skin into darker ones like Redhead Triss is not a redhead or Fringilla straight up being african black. It is so obvious that it kills suspension of disbelief everytime you see one of these things. These characters are not black in either books or the games.

Nilfgaardians are not done well one bit. They are evil for the sake of being evil. Every dialogue scene with them is tropy, they are behaving as if Emperor is a prophet but there is actually no philosophical discussion or even single line of dialogue that actually explains what they believe in. It simply is as it is because creators needed unwavering loyalty in Nilfgaardians. They are in the category of "Stupid Evil". Sacrificing invaluable resources for momentary gains. Last episode is a good show of this. And dont get me started on the ballsack armor ugh..

The show also has tempo problems. I understand they need to do a proper exposition to main characters, but the current day events about Ciri is strecthed out the whole season which completely diminishes the impact it'd have had on us if they just condensed it into one or two episodes. Show constanly goes between past and the present as a way of exposition and it creates problems. I could keep up because i know the books but would make no sense to people who are learning about them the first time.

Great deal of characters are not portrayed properly. Especially the last episode involves an event if done well would've been crown jewel of television. However they needed a far bigger budget to pull it off, and we could tell from directing and the decisions it was lacking. Thats why the characters in the episode are far weaker than their book or game counterparts except Yennefer which makes no sense. Especially when you see how that one particular character fights, compared to whom she was far weaker in the books. Basically they are very liberal about book material despite what creators claim.

Still overall it is not a bad show. Dialogue is generally good, action scenes are done well and directing is decent. I even liked Jaskier(dandelion in games) which may be the best of the cast in terms of how well he fits. Songs should have more Polish/folk vibe however, as it is still too western. Overall if you just want to watch a decent fantasy show, the witcher will do the job. It is good enough.

Now I am hooked. I can't stop watching it, and it's making me want to read the books. Superb acting not just by Henry Caville, but the whole cast. Great story telling. Great fighting and impressive screen play. One of my major pet peeves are rushed shows and corny acting. I was also worried that this was going to be a show pressured to scratch that "game of thrones" itch, and would suffer trying to be too ambitious. Instead, what I've found is a show done right, and it stands on its own.

I have to give Caville a lot of credit- he captures Geralt of Rivia exactly as I would picture him. You can tell he not only did his homework, but cleary has an interest in the games and/or books. So well done!

My only minor annoyance is that there are some details that aren't explained and makes the assumption you know what's going on. The fourth episode in, I was royally confused as to what was going on, because I didn't realize right away that we were going back and forth in time to tell the story, and what was going on with the characters in some of the scenes. I suppose though, this is what makes me want to read the books now and replay the games!

REALLY looking forward to this series continuing, and I urge everyone to watch it!

I don't hate it. But there's barely anything to love. Guess Netflix wanted their own GoT but with 1/10 of a budget/talent and it shows.
Lead actors are ok, but supporting cast are not even trying. Miscasting is a real problem. Fight scenes choreography - good, would've been great if not for those silly spinning moves. Costume designer needs to be fired.

Triss isnt in it much, her actress is fine but not sure why they changed her look so much, she is well known for her red hair through the books and games, but no biggie though I expect her role to grow substantially. Ciri, well again the actress is good but her character is not very fleshed out in the first season so we will see. The biggest issue with the show is that if you have no previous Witcher knowledge, be it the games or books I can totally understand you being lost more often then not.

Yennefer is not bad too. Ciri is acting well but I dont get used to her face yet. Triss Merigold is bad and the choice of this actress is completely irrelevant. The habit Netflix has to put minorities everywhere even when its overly out of context is tiring but it doesnt change the quality of the show, fortuntely. Story seems confused if you are new with the universe but time will make some order in this chaos, I guess. Problem is that mixing narrative arcs AND timelines is not a good idea for new comers and can be hard to follow. Fights are energic and well done but CGI are sometimes weak and are lacking of post production work. I cant compare with GOT cauz I am probably one the few who didnt like this show on the planet but I'm pretty sure that the dialogues were better. At least, political subject like racism between humans, dwarves, elfs and witchers/sentient monsters is not silenced to fit with Netflix agenda, hooray Expand

As someone who played the games, The Witcher series nailed the feelling of the games, great acting and direction, really enjoyed it.
last episode was a little bit off for me, felt like it as dragging for a bit.
but Henry Cavil as Geralt was just on point, he carried the show, and stayed true to Geralt's monotone voice/ character.

Very close to the book. Cavill as Geralt is mesmerizing. The only thing that I had an issue with was the timeline. But after taking it all in and re watching and thinking about. It all makes sense. MUST WATCH for Witcher fans!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just SAD. Had to create an account just to rate this as one of my favorite franchises is getting destroyed by a staff with ulterior motives.

    Let's start with the positives:
    - Henry Cavill gives a good shot at portraying Geralt, good voice acting, simple dialogue, sarcasm a bit here and there.
    - Combat scenes (apart from the first Nilfgaardian battle) are good and thought out.
    - Some CGI of monsters and practical effects are also very good.
    - Some of the landscape that was not CGI is beautiful too.
    - Music feels authentic.

    And that is it.

    Now the negatives:
    - The plot is a mess. Everything is getting thrown all around with confusing timelines and lore is being force fed to user like it was a Foie Gras duck. The creators don't give time to explain all of this. The mini stories (curse ones) of each episode are too fast paced and you don't get the feeling of any story developing at all. It just moves forward like a machine.
    - The dialogues are bad. You don't feel any chemistry between characters. The lines are being dropped once again in a lazy fashion. Ciri met an elf that saved her from Nilfgardian patrol, he doesn't speak. He later saves her again from a camp; later in Brokilon realizes she is a royal descendant. Then he starts to drop truthbombs about how her grandmother had slain his relatives. All this with no feeling or soul whatsoever. Their conflict is forced upon us. It had no chance of developing naturally because everything is too fast paced. There is no character revelation. Not a single character has a compelling story arc.
    - Miscasting - Physical appearances are way off. Yen has to be a feared mage yet she looks almost like a kid with puppy eyes. Triss and Fringilla ? More like Friss and Tringilla - the nonexistent characters of Witcher universe that the writer did not include.
    - Diversity. I think it was time creators obsessed with gender and race inclusivity started to make their own projects and stopped piggyriding on established canons. Totally ruins the immersion. I wouldn't want to watch John Q with Brad Pitt portraying him. Creator Lauren Hirssich spent her time arguing on Twitter why it is a good thing and why skin color doesn't matter because books don't focus on it. Well there is a lot of 'pale face' mentions attributed to characters that now somehow have become black in the show.
    - Lazy CGI. You have parts where everything is great and then there are just inexcusable scenes.

In general you have a feeling that The Witcher TV series has been made by creators who don't love the source material or don't understand it and just pretend to be on the bandwagon. Good writing and sticking to great storytelling has been exchanged for dull jokes, appealing to minorities and pressing social norms.
Game of Thrones had set a good bar of character development and storytelling (not talking about the total massacre of characters from s6 and upwards). Why not learn from it?

First season is a great way to start the series. Henry Cavill plays Geralt spectacular. He really has a passion for both games and books and i couldn't think of another actor to play Geralt this good. The show has one of the best sword fightings i've ever seen, and guess what, Henry doesn't have a stunt double so all of the actions Geralt does, Henry does them himself which is pretty awesomeFirst season is a great way to start the series. Music (specially Jaskier-Dandelion's) is great.Main theme has a similar tone to Witcher 3's theme.

The only casting that i've a problem is Triss. She isn't even similar to her.Yes, her acting may be good, but the looks is not.Grealt is great,Jaskier is great,Ciri will grow, Yennefer is okay.

My only problem with this series is time transitions. It doesn't say anything when an episode is from the past or not, so you have to figure it out yourself which is hard in the beginning (and if you didn't read the books) but you get used to it.

Overall, it's definetly worth watching even if you are a fan of games/books or not.

I love it yet knowing how much it can do better. The Witcher vibe is here, the actors and their chemistry is great, they don't shy from the magic while explaining how it works in the Witcher world well. If you were feeling lost at times, get to the books, you won't regret it.

Thought the monster effects and fight scenes were excellent the time jumps in the story were well done gave a feeling to how it must be for someone who lives for centuries in this universe

As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
