I was really looking forward to this one so I'm disappointed. It's "cute" but very amateur. Like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Unbelievable. Writing, well, there are anachronisms everywhere and certain scenes meant to elicit emotion from the viewer should come with an audience prompt. Henry Cavill's Geralt is the same as the game's Geralt: wooden and morose. But at least he's accurate and hasn't gone off on some crazy tumblr fanfic improv like the writer has. Expand

I understand that following three timelines can be somewhat confusing for people unfamiliar with the universe especially during first 3 episodes. But I feel that it's well worth the payoff that comes when these three stories start to interweave and finally converge in the last episode. This structure of the first season works well with the whole "destiny" theme and manages combine separate stories defining the characters and create a foundation for the main story of the book series that will be shown in the following seasons.
My only major problem with the story is the whole Brokelon forest arc which was poorly executed and without Geralt there served no purpose other then being something for Ciri to do so her timeline wouldn't have be dropped completely while the show focused on Geralt and Yen.
And I think Henry Cavil did an excellent job, Geralt's 'hmmm'-s couldn't be more on point.

+ A great actor in the role of Dandelion / Jaskier. The songs are excellent and the replicas too.
+ Gloomy landscapes of the Middle Ages.

    Did not like:
        - Weak scene with a golden dragon. In books, she was larger and the dragon was larger. And in The Witcher 2, the dragon scenes were better. The most gorgeous dragon was in the Hobbit (Smaug).
“No Brokilon forest with dryads.” The scenery could be better and larger.
        - Armor of the Nilfgaard Warriors. The design of the armor is very strange.

    Waiting for the second season.

One of the biggest criticisms of the series is the timelines, but personally I thought this issue was quite well explored and presented without over-explanation. But it is only in this case that the series does not resort to excessive explanation as in the case of explaining order and chaos. It is only for this reason that my rating is not a 10. But under no circumstances does this little detail get me out of the fantastic universe version of "The Witcher" created by Netflix. Expand

Really give this show a chance - it will take time to get in and in the beginning sometimes you need to Re watch some parts to fully understand it, but as you do - you will fall in Love and lost in happyness on the same time. I suggest, if you want to more Lore to read the books or play the video games.

There are no all-in-one episodes in your mix.
Further. castes of actors and the game, Foltest Tris Tisai Borja, Ciri, Eist, and this is if you do not take into account all blacks and mulattos, the presence of which can not be explained.

Horrible solutions for the images of elves and dwarves.
Just disastrous battle scenes, they are disgustingly stupid and illogical, you can’t do not do it !!!
On the whole, he didn’t have anything left of the books of a realistic Middle Ages, the modern contemporary licked
    Speech characters style, clothes,
Nilfgard suits are just something, no words -100 10.
The motivation of the characters is cut into the trash, especially the motivation of the nilfgaard empire.
The whole line of Ciri is destroyed, it’s just a girl from some made-up world, not having an idea about reality, about the war about hunger, poverty and suffering, but it should.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The acting is uneven there are some great performances some very bad ones and the same is true for the special effects and costume design but it does have some amazing moments the striga story is very well done and the practical effects on this monster are great.

I can not stress enough how great it is to get a good book and video game adaptation to a TV Series... Now if you come into this not having read "The Last Wish" book by Andrzej Sapkowski, or if you have not even looked at any of the games; then you will be a bit confused at where the storyline is taking place - it is also a particular type of story telling, which, in this particular show, works very well at showing key stories of Geralt in the past (book The Last Wish) while showing you current events and establishing characters where I'm sure the second season will take place with the current timeline by the end of season 1.

Overall, the season is roughly 8hrs of glorious story telling of the short stories in the first book "The Last Wish" and young Cirilla escaping the pursuit of the Nilfgaardian Empire. While it does have some questionable inclusions of characters at particular timelines that don't exist in the book, I can see why the inclusions are necessary to progress character development and time.

I will outline a few key characters and my top moments/ability of their acting.

Henry Cavil as Geralt: Nailed the voice interpretation from the source material and heavily influenced from the game, with Henry having played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt himself, you can clearly tell he's spent many hours perfecting the "Geralt voice" and it is down right great. Honourable mentions are his powerful moments with Jaskier (Dandelion from the English books) and Roach interactions are perfect.

Anya Chalotra as Yennifer: Amazing acting, emotional scenes when we are first introduced to her, she is literally crying snot which is amazing ability as an actor to show such RAW emotion... and following her character arc, by the end, she is totally different to the disfigured girl we see in the beginning... she is Chaos. (not a spoiler unless you've seen the show already or read the books).

Freya Allan as Cirilla: WOW! I've never cared about a fiction character as much as Freya Allan portrayed Ciri... The fragile but unknowingly most power character is acted perfectly as Freya takes us on an emotional adventure and discovering he unknown powers and the "Find Geralt of Rivia" Main quest she's on.

Because the 3 actors I've mentioned are considered the "main character" I will keep the list to them.

Other mentionable things: CGI and Practical effects. Both are used... I'm happy to see that Practical was favoured most of the time which adds that slight realism, a few CG shots were noticeable but it's not a huge turn off. Nilfgaardian armour is disgusting and not what anyone envisioned but that's where the complaints end.

Summary: If you're a Witcher fan, you'll love it... If you've never watched, read, played or been interested in any of the Witcher franchise then you might not find it that enjoyable. Everyone compares it to Game of Thrones, and it's not the most fair comparison, The Witcher franchise is very well written and The Witcher games have taken, after the books are written, even further with "The Wild Hunt". So, it's got the feel of GoT, the Gore of GoT, the Erotic scenes of GoT, but I do not consider The Witcher to be compared to GoT... it is on it's own and should be held far above other shows that have tried and failed the type of adaptation this is.

I was quite sure the show will be mediocre at best, but was blown away by watching the series. The atmosphere is just exactly The Witcher. Fighting scenes are perfect. Story jumps a bit back and forth, thus introducing some chaos into the narrative, some actors don't really fit their roles, but still, my overall impression - very cool. Looking forward to 2nd season.

As it was evident that Netflix is really putting effort into this and Sapkowski himself was part of the team so I had quite the high hopes. But still it was able to positively surprise me. Even more so now that I have watched the whole season 1 twice.

The series follows books pretty closely. There are a lot of added info on Yennefers back story during the early episodes which I found to be very good to flesh her out as a character. In the end she is one of the 3 main characters in the books and in them she kind of just comes out of nowhere and her backstory is only mentioned as a side note. I think that was something her character actually lacked in the books considering how important one she is. Anya Chalotra also does fantastic job as her. I found her performance excellent especially in the later episodes.

After that additional story part the series follows the books very closely. Some things do seem to be left a bit vague compared to books which I would attribute to the limitations of the medium compared to books. So many things have to be left unsaid to fit a book into a video format. The most important themes are there though and it is made clear that it is not just the story of Geralt, but his family; himself, Yennefer and Ciri. That might be why some people who only have played the games have seem so critical of the series. In the books and as a result in the series Geralt is A point of view character, not THE point of view character. That is totally the opposite in games so the storytelling is very different.

I was wondering before the show came out how are they going to implement the short stories from the books and be able to tell a coherent story. They do have to do a lot of timejumping which might be hard to follow sometimes for people not familiar with the books. Especially since they added the early story of Ciri already to the series 1. I am happy to say though that they do manage to do it pretty well. They have a lot of little overlapping scenes to show what part of the timeframe it is and which scene is related to what and it is often easy to see things happen in the past because certain people are still alive. And it all comes together pretty nicely in the end and everyone end in the same moment so it is easy for them to start series 2 and the Ciri epic for good. The timing will be much easier in the following seasons.

All in all I was very happy with how the series turned out. The team does show clear care and respect towards the original stories of mr. Sapkowski and they did a very worthy adaptation.

P.S. Some people seem to have issues with the races of some of the cast. There are black people in the world of the Witcher from the beginning, namely the Zerrikanians. Zerrikanians who are right next to the Empire of Nilfgaard and whose mercenaries Nilfgaard is known to use en masse. So how there would not be any black or mixed race people in the Empire? That would just not make any sense. The Zerrikanian units are in the Nilfgaard deck in gwent for god sake.

EDIT: Bumped up my user score to 10 because all of the crybabies giving it a 0 because they watched one episode and there was a black man in it. Such a horror! My honest score would be an 8.

    - The diversity casting really ruins the immersion
    - Convoluted storyline
    - Pacing is all over the place
    - Some of the casting choices are very weak in terms of competence
    - The time jumping is a bit jarring, especially for newcomers
    - Does not follow books or games close enough
    - Fails to prioritize the adventures of Geralt and his monster encounters

Oh boy, I have watched through this for the 3rd time with the books and the games fresh in my mind and it has drastically changed my opinion. I originally gave this an 8, and I feel like that was way too generous.

I will commend everything that was done well first. Henry Cavill, while some others may not like him, I thought he did a pretty good job at playing Geralt. He seems to portray the game version of Geralt, more than the book version, which will only make sense to those who have consumed both. His range of emotions are not too impressive, but his tone, stature, and look, certainly resemble his in-game version well. I also enjoyed some of the soundtrack and score, as well as some of the monster CGI considering the limited budget a pilot season would have.

    Now into the bad...

This politically correct, diversity hiring nonsense really has to stop. It hurts this show so much for the fans who actually care deeply for the books and the games. None of these characters outside of the few Zerrikanian or Ofieri characters should be anything but caucasian. It is the same disappointment when Hollywood whitewashes Asian movies, or if we decided Bollywood films should only feature Latinos... it makes no sense, it's not racist, it's just calling out the disrespect to the source material and time period when it deserves it.

This leads into forcing the actual fans into breaking immersion from what they already know from the books and games. Triss, Fringilla, and the Brokilon elves are the biggest culprits when it comes to this. If you played the games, this is especially jarring for Triss and Fringilla who are now black women. If you've seen Triss or Fringilla in the games, this will look incredibly silly and poorly casted. Triss, a caucasian female, with pale white skin, (book/game respectively) chestnut/fiery red hair, blue/green eyes is now a light-skinned black woman with brown hair and eyes... Fringilla, a caucasian female, with pale white skin, green eyes, and black hair is now a black woman... it is just a complete joke and betrayal to the source material.

Yen, makes no sense at all, the actress is clearly of Indian descent, and looks way too young and submissive to play someone like Yen. I don't blame Anya for this as it is an incredibly tough role to cast and play, and she certainly looks like she is giving it her best, but none of these characters are casted well.

There are a few other minor characters here and there like Vilgefortz and Danek who also suffer the same diversity-washing nonsense, but they are not given too much screentime anyways. The only good casting choices seemed to be Geralt, Ciri, Jaskier, and uhh Roach.

Alongside all of the casting issues, the storyline is just a jumbled mess. There is way too much time jumping that is, even to me, a confusing, convoluted mess of a way to tell these stories. Stories that don't entirely line up with the books or games, which to me, seems like an absolute waste of resources. This alienates fans of the books and games, as well as potential newcomers to the series exclusively through Netflix.

I also cannot stand how much of a missed opportunity there was with respect to Geralt and his Witcher contracts, I thought these were the best bits of the show, the games, and the books. There are so many interesting contracts that Geralt takes on early, and I was sad to see such little time spent on them. Perhaps the CGI cost too much. I hope we see some more in the second season, where I will try my hardest to ignore all the awful casting choices that have been made.

Overall, there's potential, but this series needs a lot of work and a bigger CGI budget to keep me interested. I also hate to say it but, a new writing team will be desperately needed to salvage this series if they continue attempting to tell the story this way. The forced diversity cast really is the punch in the gut for this show as well, as it will turn off a lot of the loyal fans of the books and games... and I wonder why even do it? To pander and score points with these critics who gave this a 5? I do not know why the project lead would even consider this as the series should be aimed at the incredibly large and faithful fanbase over these hyper-progressive fanatics that will probably never watch this. Guess we'll see what Season 2 does. This is a failure of a season for me after re-watching a few times. 4/10

So what did I learn from Netlflix The Witcher pilot?

    - buff guy and giant ass monster can easily hide in a shallow pond while fighting, but only until the little deer will spot them, after that they can barely fit in - when facing enemy forces, fighting inside a castle is gay - better leave it with little to no defense and face them in the flied - bad guys have magical sniping

    - when facing enemy forces, fighting inside a castle is gay - better leave it with little to no defense and face them in the flied
    - bad guys have magical sniping abilities and can shoot a target in the eye during a battle from a solid distance
    - cavalry is useless
    - armor is made of tin foil and can be cut through and penetrated with a single blow
    - arrows and missiles are gay, that's why only bad guys use them
    - spears are big gay, that's why no one uses them in combat
    - siege equipment during sieges is not cool - better charge at the giant ass gates with swords and axes, three people at a time
    - when enemies are at the gates, better wait till they breach and only then start running away
    - having sex with someone will make your partner prophet and give you magical mind reading abilities
    - refuse to help someone when they are in grave danger, but run to their help as fast as you can 12 hours later
    - city market is apparently an alley with no shops, stands or goods in general
    - army, that conquered half the world, has no concept of shields - good thing that they are useless anyway
    - you can walk through the entire city, while holding a knife near little girls throat and no one will bat an eye
    - what should you do, when someone just butchered your entire gang single-handedly and now begs you to leave? Threaten to kill a little girl and then the entire town, sure nothing can go wrong with that

But the biggest lesson I've learned is to not waste my time on a mediocre TV-adaptation of fantasy novels.

The Witcher is a messy tangle of plotlines in a world underdeveloped to the point of obscurity.

As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
