Guard Duty is a proper homage to classic point-and-click adventures that’s held back by some PC-to-console growing pains. While excessively easy, it’s a perfect choice for someone who wants to get their feet wet in a typically unforgiving genre.

More than a retro-inspired mini-game, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon takes influence from the classic Castlevania NES titles and adds many quality-of-life improvements (and a few surprises) to the 8-bit, nostalgia-driven gameplay.

DOOM Eternal feels like more of the same of the 2016/7 version previously released on Switch. It’s a bummer that it’s now eShop only, but it’s the same DOOM experience that you loved before, just with some difficulty of movement.

Minecraft Dungeons is a great game for newcomers of the genre, the series, and veteran players alike. Only slightly held back by its lacklustre graphics in handheld mode, this dungeon crawler is definitely worth a go.

Flashback is a great game that somehow manages to stand the test of time twenty five years later. The option to adjust the difficulty with the new Modern Mode should allow newcomers to ease into the admittedly brutal gameplay.

Despite the fairly limited upgrades and occasional flaws, there’s plenty of enjoyment to be found in Cycle 28. Its fast-paced, addictive gameplay will keep you coming back again, and again, and again… Needless to say, the name is apt.

Nine Witches: Family Disruption is a short little action puzzle game full of toilet humour and pixelated gory goodness. It doesn’t present much of a challenge, but it makes up for it with a fun little story, quirky characters, and delightful dialogue.

With a combination of classic adventure gameplay and a unique battle system, Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan is a refreshing game with a deep message. Its thoughtfulness making for an incredibly wholesome and affecting experience.

Mega Man 11 is a brilliant return to the series after a painfully lengthy break. Visual and audio mishaps aside, it introduces an engaging new gameplay mechanic whilst staying true to the core formula that fans of the series come to expect.

An addictive action-sports hybrid with plenty of customisation options, rotating gameplay modes and an exciting roadmap ahead, Knockout City earns its spot as a multiplayer mainstay in valuable Switch SD card real estate for the foreseeable future.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore will prove to be the Switch game many didn’t know they needed. It’s funky, fresh and full of personality, and is an exciting and inventive opener to 2020 on the Nintendo Switch.

Shu is a beautiful 2D platformer that while short on length and content provides a wonderful and mostly peaceful adventure for all audiences to enjoy.

There may be other games in a similar vein to Little Nightmares, but it really is a truly unique adventure making fantastic use of the 3D space and lighting. Occasionally the controls feel a little clunky, but it’s forgivable as you experience a macabre game and world unlike any other.

Rocket Fist is the type of game that almost everyone can jump into and have a good time. As with many games of this nature however, recommending the title to players who primarily play alone is tough. The adventure mode is enjoyable - but it's also short, and perhaps not worth the asking price alone. That said, multiplayer is where it's at. All you'll have to do is hand a friend a Joy-Con, and soon you'll be beating each other senseless with rocket-propelled robot fists - laughing like crazy.

Quest of Dungeons is one of the most enjoyable roguelikes to hit the Switch. It is an easy to play dungeon crawler with an addictive turn-based gameplay that makes you want to go for one more run.

Slime-san is certainly worth a purchase, both for its charm and its addictiveness. It’s impressive how much personality Fabraz managed to convey with just a few pixels, and it’s here in droves. That said, with your mind on the clock there may not be as much time as story-fans would like to take it all in, but thankfully the gameplay makes it worth playing either way.

LEGO City Undercover is an action-packed platformer filled to the brim with secrets and charm. Whilst the series as a whole has evolved - negating how impressive this was back in 2013 - you'll still find plenty to enjoy on its own merit.

Tiny Barbarian DX is a lot of fun, uncomplicated, challenging and yet hard to put down. It’s perfectly suited to the Switch in both handheld and TV mode. Whilst it’s not one of the cheapest games available on the Switch it is good value for money in terms of its overall quality and length. I would highly recommending snagging the physical release if you can as you also get some neat extra goodies.

Voez is a "no bells or whistles" style rhythm game with a hell of a soundtrack and some very unique execution. As the first portable mode only title on the Switch it might have you apprehensive, but you shouldn't be too wary; it's a solid title from a studio that knows what they're doing in the genre.

Yono and the Celestial Elephants is more than just a Zelda clone. It offers a steady stream of puzzles that gradually increase in complexity providing you with a satisfying challenge. The comforting art style adds to the experience, especially to the characterisation of the different inhabitants that feature in the world. Then there is the endearing and thought-provoking story that helps to give the game its unique charm.

If you're not among the faint-hearted, download Butcher. It'll test your wits, reflexes and ability to stomach some gore, and is easy to pick up and get stuck into from the start. If you get frustrated at games being too hard, though, perhaps it's worth sharpening those reflexes elsewhere before taking Butcher on.

Sine Mora Ex provides a forgiving entry point for those wanting to get into shmup’s, but also has plenty of challenges waiting for you when you’re ready. The game is a visual treat on the Switch and has some of the narrative hallmarks one would expect from a Grasshopper Manufacture game. There might not be a considerable amount of depth, but you won’t feel like you’ve wasted your time, the only time you’ll be losing is to the time travel machinations of Sine Mora.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is a fantastic combination of both fighting game and RPG that fans of the series will be delighted with! For those that aren't as familiar with the anime that this game is based on, you will find a title that is a fun timesink - even if you won't fully understand what is going on!
