Witcheye is a game that feels incredibly familiar yet fresh at the same time. The reinvention of movement, the attention to detail, and the clever role reversal make this 2D retro platformer so good; it’s witchcraft.

Lucy Dreaming is a refreshing new entry in the point-and-click genre, full of laughs and style. The bleak tone only strengthens the game’s core narrative, and though it’s an easy ride, it’s nonetheless one worth taking.

In terms of pixelated platformers on Nintendo Switch, Valfaris is a punk-powered riot, introducing enough weapons, enemies and bosses to always keep things fresh and rocking. A dodge function would have helped this to even greater heights.

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is beautifully driven forward by a touching and humorous story, while its engaging card-based battle system will keep you entertained. Once the experience is over, though, there is little replay value. Overall, another excellent addition to the SteamWorld franchise.

Raji: An Ancient Epic is a beautiful adventure unlike anything we’ve likely seen in video games, let alone the Switch. The gameplay itself is of a strong if unspectacular standard, but it’s the design and the experience which you’re paying for here.

Ms. Splosion Man rightfully deserves to have another chance at success, and certainly deserves to not be so quickly forgotten about. Tight controls, bundles of character and great multiplayer mayhem is to be had throughout, and I can’t thank Twisted Pixel enough for having the gumption to release this upon us once more.

Slick mechanics, smooth controls, and faithfulness to the source material make Mario 35 another successful battle royale hybrid from Akira. Nintendo demonstrates yet again their willingness to experiment with sacred IP, and the result is something we’ve never seen before.

Hoggy2 is a fun little platformer which works well on its simple premise. At an affordable price, it’s worth the plunge.

Salt and Sanctuary not only manages to encapsulate the games in which it took liberal inspiration from, but then confidently build upon them, ensuring a complete, unique package that demands your attention at all times.

It’s another cheap and entertaining effort in the AGES series, and a decent racer to boot. Whether you are looking for a nostalgic jaunt to the 1990s or a quirky little racer, you can’t really go wrong with Virtua Racer.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy might be 17 years old, but its ability to believably set you on the path of a Jedi Master is still successfully maintained. There might be some multiplayer quirks, but the primary solo experience is out and out Star Wars.

Bridge Constructor Portal is more than just a Valve themed reskin. Developer ClockStone have incorporated the fan favourite series with great elegance, using portals and their well-known physics based puzzle mechanics to genuinely spice up the Bridge building gameplay. Highly recommended to any fans of the Portal series.

Rayman Legends will always be a great game. With exceptional platforming and level design, more levels than you thought possible and stunning art and music the game is up there with the very best. Unfortunately technical issues mean this is far from the definitive experience that Ubisoft want it to be.

With its unique premise of being a brave shopkeeper, Moonlighter creates an entertaining loop divided between two genres. Despite some minor bugs, it is still one of the best indies available on Switch this year.

At some times, Furi seems to cross the line of what you consider a fun and fair challenge. Even so, it creates a restless atmosphere with its intriguing narrative, electrified soundtrack and mixture of hack n’ slash and bullet hell boss-rush gameplay.

Wunderling is a charming and clever little puzzle-platformer with delightfully colourful graphics, a cast of cute characters, and excellent level design. If you’re a fan of the genre, don’t let this one pass you by.

SMB3 is a surprisingly engaging video game recreation of the famous sport. Despite its accessible nature, this won’t be for everyone. But for those who have even an inkling for some ballpark action SMB3 still knocks it out the park.

Beyond the initial learning curve, those patient enough to stick around with Dead in Vinland will be rewarded with a brilliantly balanced, challenging experience and will no doubt become emotionally invested in the characters and their tale of survival.

Forager is a charming resource management and exploration game with one goal: progression. With a compelling gameplay loop, charming environments and pleasant soundtrack, the game makes for an addictive yet satisfying experience. The only downside is that it’s not longer.

With bold decisions and a focus on freedom of movement, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a much-needed new direction in a mostly stagnant series. It’s a fresh new type of Pokémon adventure where the seamless gameplay loop totally makes up for some technical drawbacks.

Blind Men is a fun, well-written visual novel with a stellar soundtrack and charismatic characters. With a fast pace, multiple endings, and an astoundingly cheap price, it’s well worth the purchase if you enjoy the genre.

7th Sector is a single-player puzzler set in a dystopian future. As well as stunning pixel art, haunting soundscapes and satisfying puzzles, the game also treats players to a disturbing narrative. A challenging title worth the brain power.

Return to Monkey Island feels like a greatest hits of Monkey Islands past. The overwhelming sense of familiarity is both a blessing and a curse, but ultimately if you’re a series fan, you’re going to enjoy swashbuckling with Guybrush once again.

Despite the many similarities to its predecessor, Kingdom: Two Crowns is a minimalistic town-management game that still holds many wonders. With the addition of couch co-op and many improvements, this can be seen as the definitive edition of the series.

Gris is a beautiful puzzle-platformer about making it through the ordeals of hardship, and it’ll likely stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

Ibb & obb is a game that requires two great minds, working together, to achieve the end goal. It’s a beautiful journey, but be prepared to challenge your brain cells if you want to reach the end.

911 Operator is a joy to play, and you'll want it to go on for longer. It's not perfect, though - satisfying pay-offs to stories are absent, and it would be great to be able to purchase new resources during a level.

Archvale is an engrossing title that you never really stop thinking about. It’s got everything a soulslike or Zelda fan could need, but twists the gameplay just enough to keep it feeling fresh, even when you’re grinding out levels to take on a boss.
