When the fighting is as fun as this, it is difficult not to recommend Under Night wholeheartedly. The MIA multiplayer and lack of localisation is a concern and does taint what is otherwise a fantastic 2D fighter.

Haven Park is the kind of game that will completely absorb you until several hours have passed and, suddenly, you’ve beaten the game! The story is warm and fuzzy and bittersweet, and if you’re a fan of a quaint, relaxing game don’t hesitate to put this one in your collection.

Alwa’s Legacy is a sequel done right. It improves on its formula in every conceivable way. There are a couple of frustrations in terms of combat and guidance, but overall this is a stellar Metroidvania from a dedicated and passionate developer.

Assault Android Cactus+ is a tough but moreish space-set shooter. Infuriatingly difficult in places, it sure does feel satisfying to polish off the later bosses in particular. It left me wanting more, and provided the good kind of ‘game rage’.

Winds of Change is a visual novel that presents players with an intricate and intertwining high-fantasy narrative full of twists and turns. With an eclectic cast of anthropomorphic animal characters, this visual novel will satisfy story lovers and animal lovers alike.

Children of Morta demonstrates how to do a roguelike well: frequent upgrades smooth the difficulty curve, an engaging story keeps things fresh, and there’s plenty of depth in combat. It’s difficult and sometimes repetitive, but looks and feels the part.

Baba Is You is a simple, yet ingenious indie puzzle game that is unlike anything you’ve seen before. The charming and minimalist presentation combines with immense creative difficulty to make something that will blow your mind, if it hasn’t melted it in confusion first.

Kathy Rain Director’s Cut is a short but sweet point-and-click adventure game that provides attitude and challenge in equal measure, without either wearing on you so much that they become annoying.

A treat to the eyes, Warframe is a beautiful looking free-to-play game that presents a fast-paced and very fluid third-person shooter gameplay. Despite being a bit grindy, it has a huge amount of content to be enjoyed with friends.

HyperParasite delivers an enjoyable, well-rounded roguelite experience on the Nintendo Switch. While it stumbles at times, the addictive gameplay, unapologetic 80’s references, and unique approach to the genre help dull the pain of its limited, sometimes-repetitive level design.

As punishing as it is rewarding, Hayfever demonstrates itself a formidable player in the precision platformer genre. Technical blips aside, the fluidity of play, and great audiovisual design make this an excellent debut from a new developer on the scene.

Heave Ho is a classic case of ‘better with friends’. Play solo and you’ll get bored quickly, but gather one or two of your pals together, and this shines as a couch co-op title that will grab more of your time than you’d imagine.

Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle does feature games that feel dated by today’s standards, but they hold up well, enjoyment-wise, in spite of their age. It’s a wonderful package for dedicated fans and those who want to discover these fantastic gems.

Knights and Bikes is a homage to all things homemade, British, and school holiday-related. The relationship between its two central characters makes for an endearing story, one with plenty of heart and historical depth.

I wasn’t expecting much from Outrun, and initially I wasn’t impressed. Thankfully I persevered and found a surprisingly charming little racer that occupied me for many days. If you are looking for a simple, cheap and cheerful racer you could do far worse.

Kosmokrats is essentially Tetris in space wrapped in a tale of intergalactic capitalism versus socialism. A witty script combines with 1960s tech and an ever-evolving story (with multiple potential endings), resulting in a uniquely crafted tale. To outer space, comrades!

Duck Souls+ is simply great fun. This game is little more than a character with basic moves and 100 levels in which to use them. But those moves feel so right, and those levels are designed around them so well.

Between a strict time limit, ruthless enemies, and heavy consequences, Save Koch is an intense sleuthing experience that’s held back by minor technical issues. Each round is unique enough to give this game a healthy shelf life.

Representing yet another step forward for the RPG genre, Little Town Hero brings something fresh and engaging to the table. It perhaps needs more polish, but Game Freak are on to something special here and a sequel would be welcomed.

It's still running on a custom engine which means that whilst it lacks some of the features of other FIFA 19 variants, improvements over last year's edition on the Switch are very welcome and noticeable, offering a great experience. Arguably the BEST handheld football title yet. If you don't own FIFA 18 and want a football game, then this is for you.

Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos is a game that I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. With an in-depth upgrade system and the perfect mix of adventure and rogue-lite elements, fans of those genres will find themselves at home here.

Although Mr. Shifty is clearly inspired by Hotline Miami, it sets itself apart with the speed of the gameplay and the focus on quick reflex action. The Nintendo Switch version has some bugs as at launch, and the game can be beaten in just a few hours, but the fun and addictive experience makes this a worthy addition to your Switch library.

While a little pricey and devoid of extras, GRANDIA HD Collection nonetheless means you have two excellent classic JRPGs that gives its unrivaled battle system another chance to shine.

Wide Ocean Big Jacket is a short story in video game form. With relatable themes and a cast of flawed yet lovable characters, this slice-of-life experience is worth a look for any fan of narrative-driven adventures.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered makes it just as addictive to cause destruction as it originally did 10 years ago. While few downgrades have been made to get it on Switch, it’s a solid addition to the console’s library of third-persona action games.

Bulletstorm’s linear campaign feels like an amusement park where you go from point A to B with explosions happening all around you – and that’s extremely fun. It’s definitely worth revisiting, or visiting for the first time, on Nintendo Switch.

With its gentle ambient sounds and pastel colour palette, Mini Motorways presents an enjoyable and addictive city management challenge. It’s a particularly immersive treat when played in handheld mode, featuring a steady difficulty curve that lures you back for more.

Fun combat and an intriguing story make Daemon X Machina a great game for fans of mechs. Both visually and audibly striking, the game impresses in a lot of ways, though some of its shine wanes towards the end.
