Flying Red Barrel is a simple game with a really strong story. It is quite short, yes, but that makes it that much easier to go in for better highscores time and time again. It’s also quite hard, even on easy difficulty, so if a challenge is something you’re looking for, you’ll find plenty of that here.

If you are looking for a game that captures pretty much everything that was great about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, look no further: Bloodstained is the real deal, with a vast castle to explore, tight action, tons of upgrades and plenty of loot. That being said, the game is not perfect and some might argue that it sticks a little bit too close to its roots. That didn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of it though - after all, the game is exactly what the Kickstarter campaign promised.

While the three new levels are excellently designed and the combat is as satisfying as ever, the lack of new weapons or abilities feels like a missed opportunity. The main downside however is the uneven balancing: Some battles are littered with high level enemies (some of which require precise aiming in the midst of combat) and take easily more than 10 minutes to complete, all while you are grasping for ammo and health. Doom Eternal made you feel like a badass, while Ancient Gods almost makes you drag from one fight to next, always hoping you make it out alive somehow. This might be a real dealbreaker for some players, even for those who finished Doom Eternal without a problem on normal difficulty. Ancient Gods is still good fun, mind you, but I don't feel this is the right direction for the franchise. There is a difference between challenging and hardcore.

Karma is a story about philosophy, religion, and culture, about the essence of humanity. Finally, I'd like to leave you with something unrelated to the game itself, but something you should return to after experiencing it for yourself. There's a lot to be said for the name of the studio behind Karma, Pollard Studios. Pollarding means cutting down or pruning trees so they grow back better, stronger, and denser. Perhaps things must first be destroyed before they can heal.

Even after more than 20 years, smashing monsters and looting to your hearts content is as addicting as ever. A fantastic visual overhaul and some much-needed improvements make this the best version of Diablo 2 so far. However, a lot of outdated mechanics remain untouched, from shared loot and uneven balancing to an overflowing inventory that constantly interrupts the action. Even basic stuff like stackable gems or some useful tutorial screens didn't make it into this remaster. Blizzard is clearly catering to fans of the original, even if that means the remaster may never reach its full potential.

Just like most TV shows, the second installment of this emotional journey through the post-apocalypse can’t keep up with the terrific premiere. Much of the blame lies with the poor cast of uninteresting characters. Some logical errors in the last episode’s story don’t help either. Yet, with a captivating heroine and some spectacular moments of pure terror and horrifying live-and-death-choices, Season 2 is still an easy recommendation for any fan of The Walking Dead. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing manages the balancing act between homage and new ideas almost perfect: regarding the combat, companions and inventory- as well as leveling-system, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing “borrows” a lot of ideas from Torchlight 2 and consorts. With this time-proven foundation, the game also adds some own features into the mix: the rage-system, a rather unconventional scenario and very amusing banter between Van Helsing and his partner Katarina. The effrontery of having a coop-mode, which – in its current state – is nigh unplayable, drag down the overall impression of the game quite a lot. On top of that, battles become very repetitive and the specialization of my character lacks variety.

Steep is still a really good game, but I wouldn’t want to call it a hit anymore. The concept of the online-mode doesn’t work as intended by the developers and after about 15 hours or so, any real challenge, thus any kind of motivation, vanishes all together from the game. The game’s world is just far too huge for harboring only that little amount of content. A fact that is indeed very unfortunate, because up to a certain point, I was immensely entertained by Steep. A nice genre-mix that combines elements of both strategy and action. Battlestations: Pacific succeeds in providing gameplay and performance almost free of grave mistakes, but unfortunately free of highlights and memorable experiences as well.

Velvet Assassin isn’t an easy game. The unfair saving points and logical inconsequences are annoying and even frustrating and the slow pace will bore the pants off of many players. But those who are willing to immerse into Velvette’s cheerless, morbid world will be rewarded with an atmosphere intense beyond believe and probably the most mature WW2-game for years to come.

Without its open world and many beloved features from its predecessor, Sims 4 loses some of the series’ charm. Fortunately, the concept of Sims works so well that none of this dulls the fun in a significant way. The new emotion system is a little superficial, however, and could use work in the future.

The Ascension edition of Space Hulk is better than its predecessor in every regard. The tactical gameplay opens up a lot of opportunities and the Warhammer-atmosphere is well-made. Its presentation is still a bit barren though and we miss the hot-seat-multiplayer of the first Space Hulk.

You´ll either love it or hate it but there are things about Kane & Lynch 2 that won´t make you forget it. The graphics are refreshingly unique, the characters shine like dark diamonds out of the mass of your-average-videogame-hero and the story will shock you. But please, do not talk about the gunplay, ever.

It’s more a playable Demo than a full-flavored game. Gameplay itself offers much stealth-variety and a fantastic atmosphere with great graphics and sound. The replay-value is nice and let the player try various playstyles. It’s a good appetizer for upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Menus and are not optimized for pc, gamepad is recommended.

The game was promised as a true D&D-Experience, which in fact it isn’t. The RPG-rules are changed in a casual way, so in the end SCL feels more like a dragon-age-experience within a nice D&D-setting. If you can accept that, the game offers a good story-campaign with party-based combat, which is fun. On top you can create your own dungeons and quests, and play it with friends, including one player as a dungeon-master. Sounds good, but the creative power of the editor is not that big as in the classic Neverwinter-Series.

Disciples 3: Renaissance delivers three big campaigns that entertain for a long time. It looks remarkably good and the gameplay mechanics are adequately implemented. However, the game lacks the depth of titles like Heroes of Might and Magic 5. The armies are too small, the castle building system is rather rudimentary and the mission design is mostly straight-lined. Additionally, the music and the German dub will unnerve you after seconds. A nice try at turn base strategy, but not a big leap in the genre.

The first chapter is a charming adventure game, featuring a short, but interesting story, great voice actors and a beautiful soundtrack. The puzzles however are too simplistic and most of the side characters get brushed aside too soon. It's still fun, for sure, and some of these issues might be fixed in the second chapter, but so far Broken Age is not the classic we hoped for.

In Hawx 2 there are new mission types like delivering suppression fire for allied forces or navigating spy satellites. Furthermore you can now land, start or get refueled in some missions. These new features provide a bit variety though they are not very demanding. On the downside Hawx 2 fails to create any atmosphere due to the boring and confused story. In short, Hawx 2 is an improved Hawx 1, with more variety and less story. Those who enjoyed the first game, especially the dogfights, will also enjoy the second one. Those who hoped for innovation might be disappointed.

Though its graphics aren't as impressive as the first one's were six years ago, F.E.A.R. 3 still has a lot going for it. The campaign, albeit short, does a great job of creating interesting combat situations which are only solvable through use of the trusted slow motion mechanic and the new, easy to use cover system. Co-op is always fun and the multiplayer options are interesting, even if their lasting appeal is doubtful. If you are able to overlook it's dated looks, artificial level design and some balancing flaws, F.E.A.R. 3 is a fun shooter for the summer.

With reviewing remakes, I always tend to find myself in a bit of a bind: should I judge the original game by today’s standards or not? Maybe I should only look at the quality of the remake/remaster itself? But because Resident Evil HD Remaster is - in this version – a first time ever release on PC, and the original game is banned in Germany, I can wholeheartedly recommend the game to everyone who hasn’t been able to play the first Resident Evil yet. Personally, I really wouldn’t want to miss all the technical improvements. Though I do wish, they had also improved upon loading times and the inventory-system.

Arma 3: The newest installment of Bohemia's military-game is more than ever an excellent platform and sandbox with great potential. Especially since the community has built much in-game content so far. Unfortunately the game-content, included by the developers, is not satisfying enough. The units and game-areas are great, but there are many bugs with AI, scripts and more and only a few multiplayer scenarios available.
