After a fourth chapter that has pushed the boundaries of the series to another level of exploration and complexity, returning to Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD seems like a step back on the route of evolution. Anyway, Ubisoft has done very good work with the HD adaptation and if you wish to know something more about the Creed's universe and this charming character, the ticket to the 700's New Orleans is not too expensive.

Disintegration provides a pleasant breath of oxygen to a genre, such as that of first person shooters, often rooted in consolidated archetypes. Unfortunately, the technical realization betrays the limitations of a budget that would have been better conveyed only on the single player campaign, instead of concentrating a good part of the forces in anything but satisfactory multiplayer.

As it stands, however, it is a project that puts the long testing phase it desperately needs behind the payment of an entrance fee, among other things in an undergrowth in which the competition has adopted the free-to-play model for years, running the risk of generating a fall from which it seems difficult to recover.

There are two souls fighting within Lost Soul Aside: the first is that of a small project created by solo developer Yang Bing and painstakingly nurtured over many years, while the second is that of a PlayStation-branded title sold at a triple-A price. It’s a “stylish action” video game inspired by the formula of Devil May Cry and the aesthetics of Final Fantasy that — not always for the right reasons — recalls the structure of old PS2-era hack and slash games. The combat system starts off with the handbrake on but steadily grows into something solid and challenging. The gameplay manages to stay fun throughout the adventure, but as soon as you step away from this core, a number of weaknesses start to surface: in addition to bland, impersonal storytelling and art direction, there are many rough edges, both in terms of presentation and mechanics. In short, it shows all the flaws and inexperience you’d expect from a small debut team, but these are inevitably magnified by a price and positioning that don’t reflect its true nature.

Slitterhead is a significant waste. Many of the concepts underlying the game are brilliant and demonstrate how Toyama remains a creative mind capable of experimenting and crafting unconventional titles. However, it's evident that, deprived of the resources he once had and forced to start anew with a fresh team, he has not been able to adequately bring his initial vision to life.
