Despite its flaws, Tales of Xillia's excellent characterisation, entertaining battle system and addictive levelling-up and shopping systems ensure that Namco's latest is worth exploring twice over.

With such a beautiful and distinct art style of its own, a world ripe for exploration and satisfying brawler combat that is unique among its peers, Guacamelee has as much to teach future games as it has learned from the greats.

With an improved tutorial system, this is the most accessible entry in the series for some time, but there will still be those who yearn for the days when the football management title wasn't so bloated with stats and options.

While it's true that dragon riding promises so much and delivers so little, and antagonist Maarik is somewhat underdeveloped as a villain, 'Dragonborn' is exactly what Skyrim fans have been waiting for since exhausting the main campaign. Solstheim is a fantastic location, packed with interesting landmarks, challenging enemies and a wide variety of quests, and reigniting that initial sense of awe.

As the difficulty gradually ramps up the longer players survive. Death is frequent, but the menus quickly bring you right back into the action for a constant stream of telling yourself 'just one more try'. Unstoppable Fist is aptly named, as once you get started it's a hard one to put down.

Crysis 3 is one of those games that could have pulled in full marks if only a bit more time was devoted to development and testing...The bugs and design mishaps that have got through do not completely ruin the experience, but they take the shine off what could have been a truly brilliant game.

Regardless of what label you end up applying to Axiom Verge in your own discussions, the most important one to keep in mind is this: Axiom Verge is a damn fine game.

RoboCop: Rogue City is a blast to play for long-time fans of the franchise and goes above and beyond to respect its source material. It won't win any awards for being ground-breaking, but Peter Weller offering his voice to a story that's arguably the best use of the RoboCop name since the original film makes this a worthwhile treat for those who want to be transported back to their childhood.

It may be a little short of original ideas and the controls can be fiddly, but blockbuster titles like this are what we need to take tablet and smartphone gaming to the next level.

Before long each death will seem like a new dare, taunting you to try just one more time. After all, next time will be different, with a new layout offering the possibility of new outcomes. As you slide deeper and deeper into Spelunky's depths, you can almost make out the sound of the game laughing at you.

The paper world of Tearaway is a thoroughly original one, loaded with quirk and aesthetic charm. Character animation has a stop-motion look to it, and the result is mesmerising at times.

Assassins Creed Shadows takes ideas from previous entries as well as some bold experimental swings to create a defining entry in the franchise – perhaps as series-defining as Black Flag. We personally think it’s the best the series has ever been, and despite some parts of the narrative not quite sticking the landing, we had an absolute blast with Ubisoft's latest.

Off-field issues remain PES 2014's biggest problem, lacking that one killer game mode needed to overtake its main rival. However, the action on the pitch is the best it's ever been, rivalling and arguably surpassing that of FIFA, and setting up a tasty next-generation battle going forward.

This was clearly a labor of love for Just Add Water, and fans of the original will no doubt experience a similar degree of fervour when they revisit Oddworld, which isn't to say the game's appeal is limited to this crowd.

The game itself, however, is still out of this world, with Wii U users benefiting from the new and improved ending and a more efficient touchscreen control system. If this is your only opportunity to put an end to the Reaper invasion, we can't recommend the game enough, but if you access to a different gaming system, it's better to look elsewhere.

Strider is admirably true to the game that Capcom released on arcades in 1989 and will delight those who still hold a candle for the original, with its unaltered core gameplay and polished production values. With these qualities on side, it's easy to overlook the game's shortcomings and deem it worthy of the Strider name.

Future Soldier could have ended up a real mess - and some hardcore Ghost Recon fans may still think it is - but the majority of players will find a really engaging game in both single and multiplayer. Ubisoft has managed to simplify some of the tactical aspects of the series and unite them with a broader action focus.

It's not quite Destiny's best expansion – The Taken King is hard to top – but Rise of Iron does an excellent job of giving the game's fans more of the content they love to get stuck into. The campaign is short but very sweet and leads to another sprawling series of challenges and quest lines that should keep you fighting, exploring and collecting for a few months yet.

In summary, The Ratchet & Clank Trilogy collects three games that everyone should play in one affordable bundle. Extras might be few and far between, but Idol Minds has done a great job rendering the titles in HD. It's cross-genre gameplay at its finest, complete with memorable characters, expert level design and one of the best arsenals this side of Borderlands. A highly recommended trip down memory lane.
