Each song is a reflection of Madame X. Sometimes she is a freedom fighter, sometimes she is a cha cha teacher. Sometimes she is expecting love, sometimes she is feeling nostalgic about her childhood and her past. Sometimes she is thinking about all the people in the world who are suffering and do not have a voice, and who need a voice, and have a sense of responsibility about these people.

You read the manifesto, right? So you know she's a secret agent. And so, she changes her identity depending on the situation, but she feels the responsibility to inspire, to help, to bring light to dark places. And she'll take on any person she needs to do that job. So she's a chameleon, yes.
Madame X is about all that.

The album is sonically innovative and surprisingly a cohesive one despite working with multiple producers, multiple genres and themes. There’s no potential hits that might appeal to Billboard Hot 100 but that’s the beauty of this album . It’s not a desperate attempts to gain chart records like Rebel Heart or MDNA and M works best when she went back to trusted producers like Mirwais or perhaps, living in Europe has helped her to gain fresher ideas which resulted in a more organic sound. Critics failed to recognize the beauty of the bizarre and they cannot separate her alter ego Madame X from the real life Madonna which resulted in misleading judgements. To all those fans who complained that she should make another LAP or ROL or COADF, you should know that M only made music if she wants to and if you cannot move forward with these innovative and fresh sound then go home and play The Immaculate Collection then. From America, to Brazil, to Portugal and to Morocco, Madame X invites you to "a culture ride". My early faves: God Control, Batuka, Crazy, Come Alive, I Don't Search I Find, Looking for Mercy. The transition to disco sounds in "God Control" might be the peak position of the album sonically. With "Batuka", she proves once again that she is the only postmodern artist alive in music. Probably another artist would use the sounds of batuque just like that. However, Madonna mingles the folk sounds with auto-tunes which is so to the point. (All hail to Mirwais Ahmadzaï!) There are also songs in the album that have the potential to hit the top 40 in charts such as Crave, Crazy and Come Alive.

There are songs that might have made me rate this album 9 or 8, but Madonna's zeal in novelty in music stopped me. Therefore, 10 points go to the queen of reinvention.

Amazing effort from Madonna. It is weird, bizarre, innovative, experimental. A mix of pop and world music. The lyrics are sometimes a bit forced but otherwise they are in phase with today's society. They're political, they're poetic. Brilliant Madonna album. I applaud her ability to change her style and experiment as much as she does with her fashion. My criticism is with the treatment of her voice on the album, as she vocodes her way (to a Kanye ‘808 and Heartbreaks’ point) through 15 tracks.

Madame X itself is a solid effort, and more importantly harkens not only to her ‘Ray of Light’ era (through the exploration of world music), but also opens the door for Latin artists Maluma and Anitta to the mainstream. I also appreciate the raw and personal lyrics found in tracks such as ‘Killers Who Are Partying’ and ‘God Control’. What is missing is an element of engagement with the listener as Madonna tries, and only somewhat succeeds, to create depth in modern production tactics.

We need to talk about the pink elephant in the room: Madonna's selection of singles to represent this new era of "Madame X" have been rather disappointing, let alone, kind of unnecessary (with the exception of 'Dark Ballet' and 'I Rise'), so I believe in order to enjoy the album properly is wise to skip these tracks (unless on the contrary, you happen to like it). Nevertheless, it is good to say that the aforementioned album cuts are GLADLY not a representation of the brilliance of "Madame X", which is by far the Queen of Pop most experimental record in this decade (She sings in Portuguese for God's sake!). My expectation, to be honest, were not high after listening to the first cuts, but I'm happy to see that Madonna made again a great album and ashamed for doubting her.

"Madame X" delivered what was promised by the diva in several interviews: a mixture of pop and Hip Hop elements with Fado and Portuguese music which make the results rather delicious and interesting. Another great thing about the record is that there is a bit of nostalgia in the album as we can find traces of Madonna previous works such as "Erotica" or "Hard Candy" with the political commentary made in "American Life" or her previous "Rebel Heart" in some of the songs, and by these I'm not entailing Madonna is repeating herself but rather the opposite: In "Madame X" there is exploration of uncharted terrain while preserving the essence and identity that made Madonna who she is today. Definitely, one of the best pop releases in 2019.

Madonna’s best album since Confessions on a dancefloor (2005). Including 15 tracks (5 of them were released as singles), she has made a complete experience of sounds. A work of art, but that’s not new, because she’s Madonna!

Ok, we can say it is best album in years. We can say everything. I can say this album is amazing. Each song is special, hearth and soul- taking. You want to vibe, dance and move. Productions and vocals are amazing, Mirwais and rest did wonderful job. To sum up, its great pleasure listening this masterpiece. Go Madame X!

Madame X is not just her best since Confessions on a Dancefloor. It's American Life's lost twin sister. It's Music's ugly cousin. It's Ray of Light's deranged daughter. A misfit of an album that demands to be heard. Stunning.

EPIC! A worldly and other world artistic journey. The intricacies of the melodies, instrumentation and production are mind blowing. It’s in the details.

Madonna show that age doesnt matter when you have a mastermind , the album is very cohesive even the fact that theres a lot of genres.

The pace plods on some mid-tempo tracks, but overall this is a personal, politically-charged mix of dark thoughts and good vibes. [Aug 2019, p.88]

Overall, Madonna’s fourteenth album Madame X feels as if Mirwais had mostly completed a decent run-of-the-mill modern pop record, albeit with a cool hotch-potch global feel; hip nods in place to fado, dub and other micro-genres dunked amongst the trap and retro disco. But then just before sign-off, Herself went through the top-lines with a sharpie. ... None of these carefully curated flourishes feel as if they truly live inside the ‘whole’ of this music. Instead it all feels plonked on top of a template.

Madonna has created this music for an audience of one: Herself. Often it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.
