Infuriatingly stupid and dumb. For anyone who loved the 2017 movie, this would be nothing but a terrible disappointment. For anyone who loved the 2017 movie, this would be nothing but a terrible disappointment. This movie should start with a disclaimer saying "Please turn off your brains for the next 2 hours and 35 minutes or you might end up with an excruciating headache." The script is totally inconsistent and literally nothing makes any sense. The very first scene itself is completely inconsistent with the premise set up in the prequel. I see a lot of reviewers regarding that scene as one of the best scenes of the movie, but clearly, they have forgotten or never watched the 2017 movie. As a child, Diana was not allowed to partake in martial sports with the other Amazonians and the Queen was especially against it. Here in this movie, we're forced to see the Queen proudly watching child Diana compete in the deadly warriorship olympics. Utterly distasteful and nonsensical.
And then the actual movie begins, which really has nothing at all to do with that first scene. The plot is pointless, immature, and illogical. The characters lack dimension and conviction. Crucial details are just omitted or explained away with illogical dumb explanations. The motivations of the villains are completely unclear. For the climax, the threat seems to be of a nuclear war, but given the film's premise, such a war would not be in the interest of either Maxwell or Barbara. But they won't stop it. It's utter nonsense. BTW, the story of Barbara makes ZERO sense. At the end of the movie, you might just feel pity for her for the way she got treated in the movie. The ending sucks. No questions are answered - what happens to the stone finally - what happens to Barbara - nothing. There's just a random Christmas scene at the end that again, has nothing to with anything. It was July when they flew to Cairo. And now, it's Christmas. Deal with it!
The entire plot of the wishing stone is just SO BEYOND DUMB. It's so unoriginal it hurts your brain if you think about it. The stone grants one wish, and so Maxwell wishes to be the stone itself so that he can himself have infinite wishes. Oh really!? I mean there was a skit in the FRIENDS show where Rachel mocks the guy who says "if I had a wish I would wish for more wishes." THAT WAS IN 1994. People were so tired of this cliche back in 1994 that comedy shows were writing jokes about it. And that's exactly what Patty Jenkins' big fat idea is for a 2020 movie supposed to be a blockbuster.
The film is so immature. Devoid of depth, philosophy, or anything of substance. It grapples with a message that it doesn't understand. It makes abhorrent assumptions about the nature of humans that everyone, and yes LITERALLY EVERYONE on the planet is greedy and selfish and destructive. Throwing the whole "there is good in humans" message of the last film into the trash bin. The writing is ridiculously child-like and yet I can't think of a child who would actually find this movie interesting. There's no thrill, and the anti-climax is literally a drawn-out monologue!
It's a disgrace. Honestly, everyone involved in making this film should be deeply ashamed of themselves for unleashing this garbage on the fandom. It's especially disgusting because it's supposed to follow up on the 2017 film, which as far as I am concerned, was a great movie. I loved it whole-heartedly and had big expectations for the sequel. This didn't just disappoint my expectations, it even went back in time to ruin the first film with that garbage opening scene. Seriously, shame on ya'll.
I found the attempt to emphasize Wonder Woman's super-power of truth over her strength endearing, and the performances of Gal and Kristen are as good as they can be. The script isn't their fault, after all. So that amounts to the 1 star. Nothing else deserves any credit.
Patty was clearly so obsessed with the 1978 Superman kinda films that she forgot it's 2020. WW84 wants to be Superman so hard that it even forces in a scene where WW is learning to fly just like Superman! Which is just as dumb and pointless as it can get. I mean, again - it's 2020!! People expect, NEED, movies with far more maturity now. Patty, please leave the writing to people who know how to do it.

The movie diverts you, but still to hard to watch in some scenes, gets you kind confuse what’s is kind nerving rack but them settles through the middle. And Chris Pine is just useless. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is bland, too long, and doesn't make sense. It's sad to see the franchise go from an amazing first film to an incoherent unexplained mess for the second.

The McGuffin of this movie is a rock, that grants wishes. There is nothing else to it. We don't get a revelation scene where Diana figure that out properly. We get a scene where she visits a crazy person who is a Mayan, and Diana just... Believes him? Her wish and desire to go back on that wish is out of character. Diana would have immediately retracted her wish as soon as she knew it was destroying her and the world.

The plot is painfully predictable. Even my Fiancee who actively chooses not to think ahead in movies and take them at face value was ripping this movie apart for this very straightforward no risks taken plot. She even predicted at the very beginning that the ending would be a 'zero-sum' of everything that happened.

Moving onto the CGI, whilst the underused Kristen Wigg's final Cheeta look was great, it was absolutely destroyed by the rest of the movie with poor physics and HORRIBLE animation on Gal Godot's Wonder Woman.

How disappointing. No wonder this movie was so quick to streaming, instead of waiting for a full theatrical release. I think the studio knew it would be met with this response.

4.5/10.

My biggest complaint is that the Max Lord character is uninteresting, and not fun. Instead of making him a super bad, he is simply a guy who makes wishes come true. He character revolves around murky rules for wish-making, for example, why does Barbara get 2 wishes, but nobody else? And how exactly are the wishes killing Max, and how many is too many? It felt contrived, not well thought out. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine were good. So was Kristen Wiig, which surprised me a bit. But all three together were unable to save the poor script which was full of good wishes and positive messages, but extremely light on action and entertainment. The Cheetah character was great, but she and WW only had 2 fight scenes totaling about 5 minutes. She doesn't fully realize her powers and ability to be menace until the very end. And Cheetah is a sub-villian to the inferior Max Lord character, or a co-villan at best. She should have been the focus of the movie. I wonder if the producers felt pushed to make the movie feel good, because of Covid and general societal upheaving. You know what would have made me feel good? A good movie. Lastly, my wife and I had a good laugh at the prospect of making this movie a 1980s period piece. References to the '80s were few and far in-between. We decided that the whole reason for naming it WW 1984 was so they would have an excuse to dress Pine in a few ridiculous outfits for a total of about 30 seconds. It felt like false advertising. Since the release of “Wonder Woman 1984” on Christmas day, I’ve largely been AFK–that’s geek speak for “Away From Keyboard”–and have no idea if it’s been getting praise from more mainstream critics. It won’t be getting any from me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2017 installment, writing among other things:

“Hollywood finally got another superhero movie right (and it certainly took them enough tries). ‘Wonder Woman‘ strikes an impressive balance between action and comedy, and it does so in a way that is distinctly geared towards female sensibilities–a true rarity in the genre.”

The 2020 version, however, is just as disappointing as the year itself.

How writers Dave Callaham, Geoff Johns, and writer-director Patty Jenkins went from such highs to such lows is beyond my comprehension. Compared to the original, nothing in “Wonder Woman 1984” is compelling, from the storyline to the action sequences to the cinematography and beyond.

Taking just one brief burst of thirty seconds or so as a sampling, logic and continuity were repeatedly spurned as I thought to myself, “Why would a fighter jet be accessible to someone with Smithsonian clearance and just be sitting on a runway ready to go?” and “How could a World War I-era pilot possibly fly an 80s-era fighter jet?” and “Fighter jets can’t fly direct from Washington D.C. to Egypt without refueling” and “Since they just established that it happens to be the 4th of July (purely for the visuals, of course, not furthering the actual plot in ANY way) why was everyone else acting like it was a typical workday earlier?”

Again, because it bears repeating, all these complaints of mine are from a single sequence. If I were to type out everything I feel is wrong with “Wonder Woman 1984,” I’d wear out my keyboard.

The bottom line is that Jenkins & Co. seemingly got so infatuated with the idea of constructing a movie around the concept of the Monkey’s Paw that every other element had to be crowbarred into the theme, everything else be damned. It’s a shame, as the legacy of the Wonder Woman film franchise has forever been damaged by “Wonder Woman 1984,” making me wonder if Jenkins herself had previously wished upon the paw and is now paying the price.

After so much time and all the delays it had, it's strange to realize that the expectations far exceeded the results, and that personally, Wonder Woman 1984 was a massive disappointment.

Clearly the success of the first film granted Patty Jenkins ample freedom, but that doesn't translate into a good movie, much less a great story, and Wonder Woman 1984 is an excessive and cartoonish film.
I can even go so far as to say that there were oversaturated moments that made me think of Schumacher's Batman & Robin.

It certainly doesn't fall as low as that slop, but Jenkins plays with a lot of elements that doesn't really help her film. Mainly, I deeply believe that it was a mistake to continue placing the character in the past. An element that also shows an implicit hypocrisy on behalf of the director, since she criticized Joss Whedon because Justice League contradicts her films, but this same film contradicts what Zack Snyder did in BVS, because apparently she forgot that Diana Prince herself says that she walked away from humanity 100 years ago, and 1984 shows that she did not do that.

I must say that at all times the decision to place the plot of the film at that time was more a whim of the director, than a real decision that adds something to the character, especially since we already know the sophisticated woman she became in the present. What Wonder Woman 1984 really is, is a love story in which the lead character ultimately learns that the easiest way is not the best option and she has to learn to let go. It's nothing new or innovative, but I assume that for many viewers it will be enough for emotional catharsis, especially considering that critics have called it an antidote to the reality we're currently living, which makes me think about what their reasons would be to value it, if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic.

And what's the worst sin in the film? Its villains and their remarkable lack of threat.
Pascal's character is the catalyst, while the wrongly chosen Kristen Wiig is the muscle.
Pascal is at least credible, Wiig's plot twist is simply laughable, and forced to work more by the structure of the narrative than because it has a specific or necessary weight in the plot.

Gadot delivers, and shows that the character belongs to her, and her chemistry with Pine is still genuine like in the first film.
Pine is her best support and anchor. Now her real challenge will be seeing her standing alone in the character's third planned film.

In small mention, I have to give kudos to Hans Zimmer's remarkable score, but thumbs down for the CGI and some VFX shots, since there are moments that look really bad, especially the scenes in which Wonder Woman is running.

In conclusion? It was more hype than anything else.
And for me it's one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

Patty Jenkins, the director, has the movie set in the 80s which isn't a setting that's common in superhero movies. They utilise this setting by having more vibrant colors compared to the grey, dim colors of the first movie. Also, the set and costumes designers do a phenomenal job in bringing the 80s to life.I also like the idea that it is kind of a reverse situation to the first movie for Wonder Woman. In the first movie, she was the fish out of water learning about the world outside Themyscira but here it's Steve Trevor instead. Due to this, we get to see a completely different Wonder Woman from the first movie and a slightly flustered Steve which was entertaining. The action scenes are also pretty fun to watch but they are nowhere near as good as the first movie to be fair. Also, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) was a surprising villain as he was more emotional and less stoic than I expected. Most supervillains in comic book movies, even the first Wonder Woman movie, are bad because they are bad and just stone-cold but Maxwell is more energetic than that which is different. On that note, I think the actors all do a really good job. Gal Gadot feels better than previous movies now as it feels like she has got the ropes. Chris Pine is still charming and charismatic and Steve Trevor. The chemistry between the two is still there and the best moments in the movie are the scenes where Wonder Woman and Steve are together. There are some emotional moments in this movie and Gal Gadots performance is incredibly convincing. Pedro Pascal is so good as the main villain and his performance throughout the movie as Maxwell Lord becomes more insane is very convincing and enjoyable to watch. Kristen Wiig as Babara/Cheetah, the secondary villain, was a controversial casting but I think she does a great job with what is given. Kristen is great as the weird and awkward Babara in the first part of the movie but is also great as the more confident Babara in the second half of the movie. On the other hand, the story is kind of disjointed and messy. It doesn't flow well and due to that causes some pacing issues. The movie is a whopping 151 minutes but this is fine if the movie was constantly engaging which this movie isn't. There are a fair amount of moments where the movie drags. Additionally, Wonder Woman's character arc in the movie is kind of weak. I feel like Wonder Woman from the beginning of this movie is still the same at the end of the movie. It doesn't feel like this movie was an important story to tell for her character and she even feels like a supporting character in her movie. The villains are shallow and cliche as well. Maxwell Lord has a son he loves which adds some humanity to his character but for the most part, he wants power because he just does. Babara/Cheetah motives are just so generic as she becomes villain just because she is jealous and that's it. I also disagree with the way Steve was utilised in the movie and felt the emotional moment with him could've been stronger.

I think my biggest complaint is how cheesy this movie is. I cringe so much in this movie even when it's meant to be serious. The movie is just laughably dumb at times and that is just kind of disappointing when compared to the serious nature of the first movie. For example, the mall action scene is just so cheesy with bad supporting actors, silly choreography and terrible lines. The movie also ends with a very cheesy message that they try to shove down the audience's throat. Instead of pushing the movie to new heights, the movie decides to embody all the cliches you can think of. The action scenes are fun, except for the mall scene, but there are some very noticeable and shoddy CGI. You think with all the delays this movie went through that they would fix the CGI but nope it's quite bad. An example would be the truck scene with Wonder Woman running along with the car and it's so green screen or the Cheetah CGI looking like it's from Cats (2019). On that note, one of my complaints about the first Wonder Woman movie was the dumb fight near the end against a dark-coloured CGI thing at night and Wonder Woman 1984 kind of does the same thing. It's not as dark and bad but it is just her fighting some terrible CGI Cheetah. Hans Zimmer who is a legendary composer does the score for the movie but it feels phoned in. Also, severe lack of 80s music for some reason. The score is just okay and that's not what I expect from Hans which is a shame. My last point is a nitpick but this movie is still set in the DC extended universe yet this global scale threat is barely mentioned. It just feels so weird that such a large scale event doesn't seem to be of that much important in this universe. Honestly, I don't even understand why the director made this a global threat because it didn't need to be. Also, the movie ends with no repercussions for some reason.

However, this movie is actually painful to watch in terms of everything it does bad that could have been good. There are far too many to list but in the first 10 minutes alone you will see the worst CGI of the past decade (Raimi's Spiderman was better), a weird effort to incorporate slapstick elements aimed at small children, pantomime level reaction-acting from supporting cast and extras, and for some reason Wonder Woman trying to be both Spiderman (swinging form 'webs') and Captain America (throwing her decidedly non-aerodynamic tiara). Superhero movies are supposed to be outlandish but this seems to have been made by someone who didn't grow up reading comics (including Diana's long and complex history) but rather had them explained to her by a studio executive. A poorly written, racist movie. Pro-state propaganda masquerading as progressivism.

An entire 30 minutes of this movie is basically just Islamophobic, pro Israeli state propaganda. The only Muslim character in this entire movie just happens to be an evil warlord, who wishes for, and I quote, "For all the heathens to be kept out forever." It wouldn't be so bad if the movie just played into this stereotype one time, pandering to the American Muslim scare that's been a thing since 9/11 is something Hollywood loves to do, but it gets worse. In one of the following scenes, Wonder Woman, played by former IDF Gal Gadot, swoops in to save a group of little kids from the evil Egyptian soldiers who of course would never stop or try to avoid the kids, because this movie portrays every single Muslim in it as inhuman. It's not done though; when Lord asks everyone to make a wish, the movie cuts to another Muslim (he's not even a character in the movie, he just has 4 seconds of screentime) and his wish you ask? He wishes for bombs, because of course he does, because Hollywood only cares about representation and avoiding stereotypes when it lines their pockets. Is any of this really a surprise considering this movie stars a literal war criminal?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, let’s just get to it. Wonder Woman 1984 is trash. I’m gonna break it down. We start off at a mall scene(gonna skip the childhood scene cuz that doesn’t matter), the visuals were D grade, like a movie out of the 2000s, and the acting was TERRIBLE. Wonder Woman shows up to basically rescue hostage from a couple guys who stole from a jewelry store/black market. and the editing just destroyed this clip. We barely see her fight, we just see guys get thrown across the room( it’s her but we don’t even see it, it cuts off before we see hits land), and it makes this scene atrocious. That was the beginning. And I kid u not after this scene, we don’t see ANY Wonder Woman action whatsoever for a STRAIGHT HOUR and some change, which makes the movie boring asf. It’s just people talking and more All Men Are Trash bullcrap. Minerva is depicted as the nerd, invisible girl who never gets any attention, which was fine, but this totally gets wrecked later in the movie, when we see her with Max Lord. Then Steve got butchered so hard his character was a complete dumbass he BARELY had a role, like he was there cuz he’s Wonder Woman’s boyfriend. And then the concept of the Dreamstone( which gave Maxwell Lord his powers) was supposed to be similar to the monkey’s paw philosophy( be careful what you wish for) and even THAT was trash, because if you want to end it all you have to do is “denounce your wish” which thins the plot and makes it WAY too simple. Then the next time we see Wonder Woman is on a road with a bunch of tanks, where we discover her powers are getting weaker because of her “wish” from the stone to bring Trevor back. The editing in that scene is even worse. At least in Man of Steel we see the actor lift cars which makes the scene more dynamic. There’s NONE of that here. We don’t even see Wonder Woman land any hits because it always cuts away, even when she supposedly pushes one of the tanks. The scene executions were HORRIBLE. Then we pick up at the White House and Minerva has a copy set of Diana’s abilities( because of wish to be like her) then we see her protecting Lord for BO other reason than a simple crush. Like BRUH HUH???. Literally beats the crap out of Diana for a man she barely met. Like what??????? Then the plot was so confusing we go to Egypt and Puerto Rico and stuff like that, and it was just shriveled. So we pick up at the “climax”, where Minerva wishes to be an apex predator hence the Cheetah. Now Max DEFINITELY had inspiration from Trump, especially with his podium scene, and they didn’t even try to HIDE it. Literal garbage. So now we are at the point where Diana is traveling to the base of Max, after she denounces her wish, and we get a cringe goodbye from Trevor. She starts swinging on clouds, falling with style, and then of all of a sudden she starts FLYING. How? WE DONT KNOW Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not only is this the worse Wonder Woman movie so far (I’m a big fan of the first one and everything else she was in), but this teeters on just simply a horrible, low class, corner cutting movie period. I am appalled at the professional critics reviews, as they lost all respect from me now. To give this movie ANY credit shows a excuse making mentality. Shame on you all !

First off, the very very beginning was great ! I was feeling at home with a proper Wonder Woman movie and story evolving. BUT the first moment I seen one of the women jump, I was like what ?? 2021 and the special effects are going backwards ?? Literally as the movie progressed every single special effect looked horribly fake. Faker than past older movies even. What’s going on ? Come on critics, call a duck a duck, don’t be shy. Tell it like it is. This movie cut corners and it ruined it for me. Next, the premise behind the stone/storyline/villain was just so discombobulated and grossly separated from anything believable. I could go on with details but none of us have time. It just sucked, the villain sucked the idea sucked the execution sucked and the core of the premise wasn’t based on anything I can believe unlike any other comic book movie. The way Steve came back was just utterly stupid. Next thing, Wonder Woman don’t fly. That was ridiculous and again looked horrible. She is not Superman, YET took a Superman position in the sky. There was a million ways I could have made this movie better and up to par with the first one. I sure hope this is not a sign of what’s to come next nor do I want Covid19 to be a excuse for corner cutting. Furthermore we as fans and critics should NOT go easy on judging this movie. Facts are facts and situations don’t spawn excuses for mediocracy to be claimed as ok.

I loved the fact they finally did the invisible jet (cause she does have one for real) and I like the Lasso, BUT again they super overly cheesed out with the way she used it by grappling onto clouds and lightning bolts.. Like that's a big NO ! Cheesy, wrong. Every other comic book movie has been great till this one. (well End Game kinda sucked too, but at least it was better than this absolute disaster).

I'm honestly amazed at anyone who is unintelligent enough to accept this as a correctly done movie.

While pining for her true love (Chris Pine), she comes to numerous rescues… on the DL. Two villains emerge: Max Lord, a greedy huckster who wants to rule the world (Pedro Pascal with verve but not special) and The Cheetah, a mousy researcher with a wish for super powers (Kristen Wiig who manages to subtly incorporate her comic charm). The evil-rules-the-world theme is tired and the evolution of the story is rather dumb. What we really care about is the action and there are some moments that thrill, but most of the scenes aren’t spectacular. To make matters worse, the attempts at emotional drama get in the way of a good time. After the engaging spirit and rousing stunts in the original, this follow-up doesn’t manage to instill the same magic or thrills. BTW, look for the real-life daughters of Gadot and Jenkins in a snowball toss near the end with Gadot’s hubby and other daughter riding a carousel in that sequence. NOTE: Sit thru the early end credits for a wonderful surprise cameo. Expand

The only reason I gave it a 1, was because the music was really good(Hans Zimmer is fantastic as always). Do yourself a favor, and skip this movie. It really is that bad. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the first Wonder Woman movie from 2017. I enjoyed the story and left the theatre satisfied. WW84, on the other hand, is a huge letdown. The writing is bad, the script is bad, special effects are terrible and Diana Prince rapes a man whose body is borrowed by her former love interest Steve Trevor. The movie is a mess with a sloppy plot device of a wishing stone to guide the entire ark. It's also way too long and the acting is weak. I say skip it. Expand

I sat down and watched wonder woman and then wonder woman 1984 with my daughter tonight. Oh my, the first was great but what a load of junk 1984 is. Total garbage, I recommend to avoid like the plague.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This one of the worst superhero movies I’ve ever seen. The action scenes in this movie couldn’t beat a first time movie maker using adobe effects. My advice to anyone i don’t waste two hours of your life watching this train wreck. It is a train wreck. Expand

It's not terrible, but it's not good either. Skip it unless you're a big fan.

Expand
