Its got some major storytelling problems, but the narrative moves along, and this is probably the second best looking high-fantasy setting ever put to film, with LotR just beating it out. I want to give special mention of the magic effects, which look just like how I've imagined D&D spells to look and are fantastic. Seriously, the special effects artists of this movie are never going to get the amount of aplomb they deserve. This is a Warcraft movie made for people who enjoy Warcraft, in all of its straight high fantasy trope glory, and I feel like that's the biggest problem for most reviewers. Warcraft has always been a lovingly rendered world that follows every single fantasy cliche to a T,(with one or two notable exceptions) and the people behind this film made a movie that followed that path. The movie is predictable, but, in this case, I would ask that people mark that down as a positive instead of a negative. That's not the only problem, as the plot does jump around a lot and can't get a good flow to the action going, but I feel that most negative reviewers are missing the point when they call it "predictable". As a side note, this movie is family friendly, and would actually be pretty fun for kids.(no, that's still not a negative) Expand

This movie is one of the movies that prove that critics just don't know what they are talking about. Now to give you some background, yes i am a gamer, no not any movie that is based on a video game is good, and lastly i have played a very small amount of WoW or Warcraft. To start this movie was no masterpiece, BUT it was a good movie. The story line although critics would leave you to believe that you need to know EVERYTHING about Warcraft in order to understand was surprisingly good. That being said the story is tough to follow ALTHOUGH not for the reasons stated by said "critics" The main problem the storyline has is that it throws out A TON of hard to pronounce and even harder to remember names that get the listener confused. How is someone that has never played a video game going to remember who's name is who's when there are names floating around like "dalaran", "lothar", "Gorona", "Gul Dan" etc. the answer is they wont, they get frustrated and stop because "it doesn't make sense" when they really mean that they are lost because they dont know who is who and what is what. Now imagine if the main character was named Jason and instead of saying the complicated names of cities and towns they started saying names like "New York" "Tokyo" and "London" that literally EVERYONE knows! yes that would make the movie easier to understand, but because people are too lazy to even try to remember a name as complicated as "Medivh"(i think i spelled that right) they give up and call the movie **** THERE IS A REASON THIS SHOW KILLED IT IN CHINA! long story short if you only watch movies to be TOLD a story instead of watching movies to LISTEN to a story then this movie will be tough to watch. I am not a typical fanboy - if this film sucked I really would tell you and be here preaching from the pulpit about how badly they messed it up... but honestly this film is fantastic. The visuals are incredible... the Orcs especially... lots of eye candy and magic, a great musical score and incredible landscapes. There are plenty of easter eggs to enjoy. There are a couple of weak scenes but they do little to effect the film negatively overall. Gul'dan was so incredible... every scene he is in is amazingly good. The sound effects were wonderful. Gamers and fans of the game overall will enjoy this film. Do not listen to the critics... they must have thought this was another LOTR.... this is for the most part the Warcraft film we wanted... my only problem is I wished it was longer! I am already excited for the sequel. Go out and see this film!!! Expand

Don't believe the critics on this one, they really don't seem to have any idea what they're talking about.

Appearance:

Somehow Bliz got the right balance of practical props and CG to make everything looking believable, but on top of that the sound and choreography is on POINT. Slightly smaller and only marginally less pissed off than the hulk, Fel Orcs absolutely crush the poor human bastards in ways that just can't really be expressed with practical choreography.
Emotions and expressions are "accurate", movement is natural. Orcs really come alive.

Beautiful vistas of game locations re-imagined are briefly visited (Stormwind a few times) but always a treat.

The only complaint is that Garona looks only slightly too human. If you're a lore buff, she was considered half human up until later down the line (Burning crusade) and depictions in warcraft do have her looking pretty much like a green-skinned woman. But in some scenes she did end up looking like a slightly tall woman with an odd skin complexion.

Sound:

The resounding impact of a hammer constructed of a rod the thickness of your arm with a stone the size of an infant into an unfortunate guardsman's chest isn't gruesome and certainly not weak but oddly satisfying to have what you hear match up with what you see.
That said, most battles are pretty one sided aside from our plot armored heroes, but frankly it makes good sense.

Music is vaguely warcraft-ish. I certainly can't recall anything I would listen to regularly like some of the lord of the rings or max max fury road soundtracks. But it seems to be a nice compliment.

Plot and writing:

There are a few moments of levity sprinkled throughout though likewise there's nothing too hammy and only one particularly awkward moment or two I can recall. A couple moments worth a laugh though I wonder how much people who aren't fans of the series might enjoy them.

The heroes enjoy a pretty significant degree of plot armor for the most part, effortlessly slaying massive brutes who are effortlessly slaying their fellows. At least for the mages it makes sense.
Things turn around a little bit later and the battle becomes a little more balanced, which does make things a bit more believable. After all, the humans have never dealt with more or less green viking gorrilas from outer space. They adapt and improve at the very end, which leads well into a presumable sequel for warcraft II.

There are a few deviations from the lore, but nothing too grievous. After all, warcraft was an RTS first before anything else. We've had layers upon layers of story added on in recent years, but it's become pretty cluttered. A little retcon wouldn't hurt.

My only complaint was that the pacing seemed a bit off. Lots of travel to show off beautiful vistas or recreations of ingame locations followed by some exposition followed by another vista, followed by exposition, etc. Some places we hardly got to enjoy for a few minutes (ironforge) while others we only got a glimpse at (Redridge mountains) and then others still got several visits (Stormwind, Medivh's tower)

OVERALL:

I highly recommend seeing this movie if you are a warcraft or WoW fan. Even if you aren't, its a pretty solid fantasy flick. Probably nothing too particularly memorable, but it is one of the better videogame to movie adaptations.

Not as good as I've been expecting it to be maybe; soundtrack is mediocre at best(Ramin Djawadi obviously failed to reach his own standard), story is a bit underdeveloped due to shortness of the movie, cause 2 hours is far from being enough for a complicated story such as Warcraft's.

But I can easily say that this movie opens a new era; where movies that are based on games are not gonna be considered as garbage by default as they used to be. Warcraft-despite having some flaws- is an incredible foundation for upcoming sequels; and I have no doubt that when characters like Illidan, Arthas, Thrall and Varian joins the storyline, we'll see more focused stories and movies on par with LOTR, Dark Knight etc.

Watch this movie, you won't regret it.

I have no idea what this would mean to a " newcomer" but I believe just the unique setting and the simple plot is worth seeing - even if its for someone who is completely new to this francise.

Writing as a fan of base game - I just couldn't bring myself not to say a BIG, GREAT and Whatever AWESOME big, big F*** you to all those paid (and sometimes one sided) "critics" saying how awfully depressing watching this was, especially if you compare this to other, unnamend titles. Well go back to your "good" winning all and "evil" being bad and so on, being not depressed, as all sheep out there does like your "awesome" "reviews", (canť imagine taking pride in that).), others hopefully will watch it and decide upon themselves.
I hope YOU enjoy it as I did watching this - have a good time!

A solid movie set up for their first and let's hope the one covering WarCraft 2 years from now will be better. It retconned some things, changed a few key things, and as movies do.. showed things in different ways than the books and games but eh.

Though some of their criticisms are valid, there was so much to enjoy, and the good outweighs the bad by far. It was genuinely a good story, great CGI, good acting, and at times, quite moving. I felt true concern for the heroes on both sides of the war, particularly Lothar and Durotan, which is a credit to the creators because I know they wanted to achieve that. I definitely had tears in my eyes a few times during some sad moments (and there were several). And fans of the game like me will surely enjoy seeing key places in Azeroth and some of the game's humanoid races brought to life.
I do agree that there should have been a bit more character development, and the plot moved along too fast at times, leaving people confused. I would have been fine with a little longer movie if they allowed more time for those things. I saw it in 3-D, which really brought me into the film. It was obvious that the scenes were designed to be particularly appealing in a 3-D movie, and it really worked well.
I enjoyed the movie and look forward to the next, hoping that together with international sales, the producers find that it will be worthwhile to make the sequel. If so, I hope the writers listen to at least some of the criticisms regarding the character development and overly fast pace, so these factors can be improved for the next installment.

Duncan Jones attempts to weave an impressive spell, but the conjugation's complexity sometimes gets the better of him.

Movies based on video games don't have a great track record. Most are terrible, a few slip into entertaning, very few rise to the level of "good," none are "great." Budding director Duncan Jones apparently saw that mountain and said, "I'mma climb dat!" With dedication, focus, and heart he and his production team nearly reach the summit.

Based upon 1994's Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft drops us directly and unapologeticly into the Orc invasion of Azeroth. Lead by the clearly evil and power-hungry sociopath Gul'Dan and his appointed Warchief Blackhand a large Orc warband travels to Azeroth to establish a foothold and open a larger and more stable portal so that their entire race may escape the dying world of Dreanor. The humans on the other side of that portal don't take kindly to being murdered by aliens or used for Fel fuel, and initiate an immediate military response.

The plot is simple enough to follow, and that's perfect for a fantasy setting that many will be engaging with for the first time. Where the stumbles happen is with the characters that actually have to carry the plot.

Nearly everything on the Orc side is amazing. Visually its the best use of CGI in the history of cinema, sometimes you can get lost enough to forget its CG. The tense personal and political struggles of Durotan and Draka feels really grounded and tense. Durotan doesn't agree with violently conquering an new world and he clearly has issues with Gul'dan's unabashed evil and lack of any scruples. However if he doesn't toe the line then he, his family, and his entire clan are going to be slaughtered. The constant political dance, small tender family moments, and hidden machinations and maneuvers are strong elements and very good cinema. If the whole movie was as strong as these scenes then I suspect the critics would have been much kinder.

The human side is, unfortunately, much more meandering. While on the Orc side you have only 6 key orcs (Durotan, Draka, Ogrim, Garona, Gul'dan, Blackhand) to pay attention to there are nearly a dozen humans that vie for attention and screen time. Unfortunately this reduces many of the humans to mere plot devices, as if every scene that was supposed to make us care got cut down to only the bare motivations. The young wizard Khadgar is a delight on screen singularly encapsulating both the serious and irreverent side of the Warcraft universe. Medivh, the older and much more powerful Wizard, is clearly gripping with a mental illness and struggling to hold himself together and it can be an uncomfortable duality. Lothar is a passable warrior, but aside from some brief shining moments, an unfortunately dull character. Garona was a strong female character and usually delightful on screen, however when she spoke in halting broken English after first meeting the humans it felt really offputting (yes your foreign we got that with the green skin and the tusks, stop hurting my ears!) That's not to mention the other characters that just glide in and out of the film.

The pacing of the film suffers from both its run time and its breadth. In an effort to keep the story moving many characters don't get a chance to breath and show us why we should attach to them. Paradoxically, the need for world building and squeal fuel lead to some otherwise unnecessary sequences. There were many scenes that could have been stripped out or paired down. The small section in Ironforge at the beginning, and the whole scene at Dalaran were pure fan service that really contributed nothing storywise. In fact at Dalaran Khadgar gets advised: What are you doing here?! You know what to do already. (Also: Alodi, because apparently there isn't enough esoteric lore in this movie).

The battle scenes were few, but great. Most importantly everything that was going on was clear. I was ready to knock the cosplay design of the human armor, but goddamnit it works so well to keep the battles easy to read.

So, why the high score? Simple, most of the problems amount to quibbles. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and I can't help but think if Jones were given a longer runtime (3hrs.) he could have made the broad fantasy epic he was clearly aiming for, or if he was constrained more (90min) he would have cut out a lot and really focused on the core characters, playing to his strengths.

Will you like it?
If you're a fan of Warcraft: its a must see, just go and buy your ticket.
If you're a fan of high-fantasy: It will prove to be an enjoyable time. Although you may find yourself on Wowpedia looking things up, or bugging a friend that's already versed in Warcraft lore for some fleshing out.
If your not a fan of Warcraft or fantasy: Its going to be a crapshoot. If you can not worry about all the proper nouns and just take it in you may enjoy it without it being memorable. Otherwise you may wish to skip it.

What in the hell is with critics these days? This movie is not perfect as it feels rushed which leads to less character development than I would have liked considering how much emphasis is based on the quickly established relationships. With that said, it was worlds better than the reviews people are slamming it with. It is CGI heavy, but incredibly well done CGI ( and remember movies like Lord of the Rings, Starwars, Star Trek, every Marvel/DC film, Jurassic Park, etc. are also heavy CGI films).

The action is fantastic, fight scenes are well done, the magic is neat though it feels a bit rushed, the acting is solid for the most part though a few characters felt flat. Go watch the movie if you at all like fantasy.

On the critics: After seeing some of these terrible reviews I started to wonder how bad they rated some of the other movies I liked. My conclusion, many critics simply shouldn't review fantasy or horror genres because they don't like them. So many of the movies in those genres I have loved have been hacked to bits by the same critics that have raved about movies I have disliked immensely.

I am not a gamer, not of that kind of games. The game is based of Warcraft: orcs and humans, the first RTS expansion to what became now the MMO World of Warcraft.
I did not know anything about the game or their characters, yet I enjoyed this movie immensely. The motivations of the characters are clear.
In one end, you have the Orc race, escaping a world that was dying because their leader Gul'dan, was syphoning all life out of it, through a portal, and into the world of Azeroth. On the other hand, you have the Humans, with their king, Vrynn, and commander, Lothar, who feel threatened by this new arrival, and more so by the arrival of the fel, which is the source of Gul'dan's powers.
The CGI is done by the best CGI studio in the market, and they succeed into making this blend of human motion capture and CGI work be more realistic than Avatar ever was.

After a bit of research about the game and their extensively generous database of wikis, I could see how some of the major plot was kept, with some insignificant modifications to the storyline, to make this work.

I can now consider myself a newbie to the game World of Warcraft, thanks to that movie, as I bought the game and it's expansion to experience the MMO world for myself, and so far, I've been fairly pleased with what I saw.

Its a movie made for the fans that explains just enough for people who don't know much about the game to understand what's happening. Packed with action, and characters that are willing to go to extremes to protect whats theirs. A labor of love and a gift to the fans. The animation is top notch and amazing, you can really feel the weight of the powerful orcs as the charge forward.

Again, ignore the critics who are just hating on it because it's movie based on a high fantasy game.

But a friend, one always for fantasy films, expressed an interest, and pointed out that audience reception was quite positive. So I decided, what the hell.

I was pleasantly surprised. The film is a treat both for players of Warcraft series and for followers of it's lore: This is a retelling of the events of the very first Warcraft game, spiced up with new elements taken from Warcraft 3 and WoW. I recognized almost every character by name and reputation if not by their face, and was able to keep my friend appraised of such. I doubt most of the critics went into this film with the foreknowledge I did, and their reviews smack of such.

This is in my personal opinion the best movie based on a video game franchise so far. I don't consider myself fan of Warcraft, Blizzard or Video Game movies in general but I think they did a great job in every aspect.

The thing I like most about the story is that the producers didn't just want to try to please World of Warcraft players directly but instead cared about telling a kind of origin story for the whole series. In the movie you can see some nods and hints of characters and story that seem to lead to the events unfolded during the Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos game which is probably the most story focused Warcraft game.

Regarding "professional" critics: In this era where it is so easy to land a job as a "critic" with even bloggers without any formal film education are being taken serious and are even calling themselves "professionals" 2016 is probably one of the most embarrassing years for these people, especially with fiascos like the Ghostbusters fake universal praise and the hate towards movies like Warcraft. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years Metacritic is entirely based on user opinions rather than on “critic” reviews.

Its a difficult task to tryAs a fan of the Warcraft games (Both RTS and MMO) for over 10 years now I wear my bias on my sleeve. The film's greatest strength is in the love and care that have gone into adapting this world for the big screen. Its a difficult task to try and distill over 20 years of lore and storytelling from one medium to another. Even more difficult is trying to tell a coherent story from this material in the space of two hours. The film largely succeeds in doing so despite a few stumbles.

Blizzard and Duncan Jones wisely chose to start from the beginning. The story is fairly simple but serviceable. If I had one criticism its that the story is fairly generic compared to those found in later games. But that isn't a slight against the film as the movie is a faithful adaptation of that story. It wasn't until Warcraft 3 that I really felt that the storytelling really became interesting.

The film can be a bit too fast paced in the beginning of the film which I do think may be disorienting to those who are not familiar with the lore. However I do feel that casual moviegoers can still have fun with it if they allow the film to exist on its own. If you can divorce yourself from the idea that the LotR is the standard of fantasy films I think you can have a great time with it and become invested in its characters.

The cast does a great job of bringing these characters to life in my opinion. Durotan and Drakka are notable standouts. Lothar and Khadgar have decent chemistry between them and I would have even liked to have seen more of it. I know Ben Schnetzer has been criticized in other reviews but I actually quite liked him as Khadgar. Another casting choice I have seen criticized is Ben Foster's Medivh. Again I actually thought he put in a decent part as Medivh. I would be remiss however if I didn't give praise for Daniel Wu's Guldan. They captured Guldan's cunning and ruthlessness perfectly.

The special effects are quite special indeed. I really do think the effects are a visual feast for the eyes. I saw the film in 3D and I even liked the extra sense of depth it added to the experience. I never really was taken out of the film by something looking fake or out of place. I found myself easily immersed in this lovingly crafted world.

The score was solid as well. If you have played the games you will recognize familiar themes from the games as well as some original music. The fantastic audio extends to the sound effects as well. Punches feel like they have power behind them and even the sword strikes and magic carry spectacular weight through the sound design.

Its worth noting that there is an abundance of fan service in the film and it never really felt too on the nose but there were some very clever subtle uses of it. Some of these may be lost on casual movie goers but I don't think they will detract from anyone's enjoyment of the film.

In the end Warcraft is a solid fantasy film and one I recommend to any fan of the property. For die hard lore fans there are some changes made to the lore but they too never detract from this adaptation. If you are a casual moviegoer my advice is to just go into the movie with an open mind. Not every movie has to be a Lord of the Rings. I do hope we see sequels so that we can get the Lich King on screen someday.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fun movie. The style is unapologeticly fantastical; this and the effort to accurately represent the game world reflect love and respect for the source material. If you despise fantasy and video games (as some of the mainstream critics clearly do) you may not be able to get past this aspect to enjoyed the solid performances and emotionally complex story. However, making the effort is well worth your trouble.

This film absolutely succeeds as a fantasy tale doing what they do best: giving those who enter an alternative world in which they can wrestle more effectively with difficult issues. In this case, the difficult choices faced by the orcs fleeing environmental destruction and having to rely on a leader who is their only hope of escape, but is also corrupt. At the same time, the humans must decide whether to trust those of the orcs who just want a new home, while also dealing with betrayal by a champion on whom they relied. Almost every main character is also presented in terms of their connection to friends and family, and while not all are human, all have an essential humanity with which we can identify and connect. At the same time, the fantastical setting disarms what might be our usual resistance to recognizing humanity in any group that counts as "the other." It is a shame that many critics were blind to this.

The film does suffer some pacing issues, in sometimes feeling rushed, but since Director Duncan Jones has said 40 minutes were cut, I imagine that the scenes shortened or removed account for it. According to cast interviews, that actors playing Orcs spent a month working perfecting their mo-cap technique prior to filming and that they bonded over that. I think this shows, because the orcs all seem more convincing as a community. I didn't feel quite the same connection among the human characters, whic again was aggravated by some rapid pacing.

Overall though, the film was visually rich, and had compelling charcaters and story. It deserved a far better recption than it received. It was a great movie for the big screen, but better late than never! Digital copies will be available in mid-September and the discs are out a week or two later, so if you didn't see Warcraft in the theater, it's certainly worth a look now.

I think I was tired that day or sleepyTL;DR - Honestly I fell asleep the first time I saw this movie on the Big Screen in 2016, this rarely happens hence I never considered rewatching the movie dismissing it as 'so boring that I dozed off'. I think I was tired that day or sleepy because I was wrong, I may have also gone in with an expectation of an Action Spectacle.
Rewatching the movie at home paying attention to the plot and not expecting to see some amazing action sequences I really have a newfound love for this film, so much that it almost made we want to get back into the 'WOW' games that I quit after finishing Wrath of the Lich King more than 6 years ago.

The Good
The CGI was really good for about 95 percent of the movie, some shots look dated now in 2020 but most of it holds up pretty well. We live in an age where movies with heavy VFX start looking bad as soon as you see them at your home after a theater watch. Four plus years later this movie is still pretty watchable which shows passion from Art Direction and VFX teams. The Music was amazing for the film, every track and piece of background music added to the immersion and has very accurately replicated the feeling of the games.

The story is also pretty good, quite straightforward nothing too deep but executed well enough. The pacing was decent with Travis Fimmel really putting his all into the role, Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga have good chemistry on Preacher but sadly they did not spend any time together in the film. Ben as Khadgar and Ben as Medivh turn in interesting performances, a little uneven at times but mostly works well.

The detailing in all the Horde and Alliance parts of the Visual Storytelling were extremely satisfying to experience in movie form. The Gryphons, Azeroth, the Murlock going 'mrglwglwlg', the Orc Watchtowers, the Dwarf Guns and much more made the Warcraft Nerd in me watch in awe at how good they were.

The Bad
Even though the CGI was amazing I felt all the actors playing the Orcs were lost under the cgi, unlike now where we can still see Mark Ruffalo under all the Hulk CGI. There were some big names, one being Clancy Brown who even after a rewatch I could not figure out who he was playing. I feel any big names on the orc side are wasted and should instead cast lesser known but good actors thereby saving budget on getting and wasting mainstream actors.
Paula Patton was alright considering the role but she felt a little uninteresting as I know she can act, it just felt she was not really into it.
The story although not bad, stays a little bland and goes as expected, maybe hiring a good screenwriter should be more of a focus over big names for the cast if they were to do a sequel as recent rumors have stated.

Warcraft 2016 is a good watch if you are not really into the games, from a Visual standpoint and a Story standpoint the movie delivers a good experience as an entry into the universe.
The the fans, which clearly from the high Metacritic user score confirms I was incorrectly judging the movie for a while now; tell me that it was a satisfying movie and hopefully the rumors of a sequel become reality soon.

Even after having run time of 2 hours, the movie feels a bit short. You could easily add 20 minutes without the audience feeling bored.

I do not agree with critic's review. It is worth watching in cinemas. You will most likely have a good time. It's no masterpiece, but it's an entertaining blockbuster.

The fact that most of the orcs are actually more expressive and naturally acting than the humans speaks volumes about the quality of the CGI involved, as well as the mediocrity of many of the actors. Fortunately, Fimmel does a good effort as Lothar and somewhat saves the day for the Alliance side. Most of his missteps are due to the script I think, rather than his actual performance. The battles are quite well done and the overall pacing of the film works, despite its duration. What was rather disappointing was the music: it uses very little from the outstanding soundtrack of the Warcraft series, without replacing it with anything remotely memorable. Personally, I think that a metascore of 32 is grossly unfair for this movie. It is certainly a far cry from LotR, but it is still a decent attempt and quite entertaining, even for non-fans of Warcraft. Expand

"Warcraft" is not the trainwreck the critics would have you believe, but it is a mixed bag:

The good:
- a rich, engaging world and lore
- interesting and conflicted characters that you care about
- good cgi, especially the facial performances from the orcs
- gets you excited for the sequels

The bad:
- poor pacing, didn't need to be 2h long
- drowns the audience in unnecessary information
- lacks a focused story and strong protagonist
- some questionable performances from the human characters
- not a lot of action

I think most mainstream audiences will find it boring, because if you're not a fan and already know where the story lines will go the movie doesn't give you a reason to care, it just bombards you with exposition which is not the right way to do it. But, and it's a big but, at least the movie has a heart and soul and you can tell the people behind it cared, and that makes a heck of a difference in forgiving the movie's shortcomings. I usually don't say that but in this case I hope we do get a sequel because the potential is definitely there.

And for a movie adaptation of a video game, that alone is an achievement. The most enjoyable parts of the movie are the scenery, combat, and the sense of world building as if this movie is a stepping stone for something much bigger. Durotan and Khadgar are both enjoyable characters. The downsides include Lothar and Llane's unenthusiastic acting, the somewhat forced romance, and a certain "death scene" that should be emotional, but doesn't really hit the right notes. Also, the movie could afford to be a little longer to fill in some important details, like the Orc's history before Gul'dan's corruption, as well as explaining who the Draenei are (the blue people sacrificed early in the movie). Overall, still enjoyable and worth watching from an outsider's perspective. If you're a Warcraft or Blizzard fan, I doubt you'll need any other reason to watch it. Expand

When I saw the critic reviews, I knew it wasn't going to be great. Yeah, critics can be harsh, but come on, most are rating it 30% or below across many different websites, so obviously something is wrong with the film.

What's wrong with it? Well the director himself made the film through rose-tinted glasses because he's a fan of the game. Is that...wrong? No, someone loving something and making a film about it only for an audience who loves the same thing is perfectly acceptable. Duncan Jones made a film for himself and other warcraft fans; overall it delivered.

5/10 - I can say without a doubt that if you are a fan of the game, and have upvoted those youtube comments on youtube xpack cinematics saying that Blizzard "just needs to make a movie already" then you'll be happy you saw it. So the movie already deserves 5 points.

6/10 - The CGI is up to standard and sometimes even surpasses it, although it isn't perfect (Golem looked terrible). Great CGI is pretty common these days, meeting technical standards is not as difficult as before, so I say good CGI is worth 1 point.

7/10 - There are some truly emotional and moving moments. I'll say this, most of the movie is pure cringe. There is a lot of stupid stuff, unfortunately...but there are a few scenes that really impressed me. I can't really talk about them because I don't want to ruin them for you, but I came close to tears during one of the 1v1 fight scenes near the end of the movie. The fact that we get some raw emotion on-top of good CGI is icing on the cake

Those are the only good points. There is more bad then good, even as a warcraft addict I can sympathize with the critics.

-1 point : A lot of cringe moments. For people who live on the internet, cringing comes quite easy, in fact I find myself almost cringing at anything these days, so maybe it will be different for you. To describe it better there are a lot of scenes which try to make you feel but fail to do so because the lack of authenticity and poor dialogue, which brings me to the next negative...

-1 point: The script is below average. There was maybe one or two lines that resonated or had emotional value, the rest of what was said by the characters was uninspired and unconvincing. Just a poor script.

-1 point: You see this point everywhere, and that's because it's true. Scene's transition much too often (pacing issues). This is a consequence of trying to tell a long story in just one movie. As a huge warcraft fan, I had no trouble following the story, but I can imagine newcomers would. Again, it is a just a fan film with a huge budget so it does not cater to new audiences, and to be honest it shouldn't have to.

A warcraft film for warcraft players. It's what we wanted, it could be better 7/10

I can easily see how someone who doesn't play the games would be confused. Then the artistic style, while it scores high with anyone who plays the games it's so outlandish and cartoony that I could see it being a turn off for those who don't. Some of the acting was great like Durotan, Lothar and Medivh, but some was pretty awful like basically everyone else. It general it's the problem with video game films is that they try and fail to capture the scope of the game. They need to narrow their focus to a single narrative or this will continue to happen. You can't capture a 100+ hour gaming experience in a 2 hour movie.

So why a 7? Cus for me as a former wc3 and wow player I loved the locations and how faithfully the universe was recreated. There were tons of props to fans with mention of locations like goldshire, redridge, elwyn forest and that murloc drop was awesome. The shot of Ironforge in the second scene made my hair stand up, I just wish we had returned there more. But again this is me with exposure to the universe. For any normal person this movie is sadly going to score pretty low.

So, when the movie faithfully recreated the world of Azeroth, down to the near pixel perfect duplicates of the Footmen from the games, I was pleased, and first of all, I noticed. So, full credit there. The battles were good, faithful to the game, all that was missing was the hud, and cooldown timers. Having said that, the rest of the movie was unimpressive, in the way that the first film of a series often is. It introduces characters and gives a rough background. So, go see it, once, for no more than US$9 or local equivalent and if you can't avoid saying "ready to work," or "zug zug," you probably won't be sad. I'm giving it a 7. It's on the higher end of how I may really feel about it.

Here's a few short review points to go off of.

Cons.

- The story's fluency. This is probably the biggest problem with the movie as a whole. We were told the movie had multiple directors (Which I dont know if they all worked separately to form a giant mess...) but at the times the movies jumps ALL over the place. Did not seem like they had a solid script to go off of. Scenes randomly ended, and the transition to the next scene was worse than the one before.

-Acting was bad. the female orc Garona (or half human/orc) was very hard to believe.

Pros.

+ CGI was great

+ Some battles were awesome

+ A lot of cool classes, magic, etc, lore from the game

+ The last 30 minutes or so was very well done. The story had you drawn in, the characters were building, the action was intense. After seeing the ending of the movie, I said.. The Warcraft series can easily have many sequels to come just like the Marvel franchise. They just need to work on the holes of the movie, which is mostly story telling, script, and directing. (ugh, sounds like everything)

---

Verdict.

If you are a HUGE Warcraft fan, go see it. The ending alone will make up for it. I for myself, fell asleep for a good 20 minutes. The filler was bad and some plots were all over the place, but if you can look pass it, there's something to enjoy here.

Shame on them for not being able to recognize a decent movie. Just because these actors are not household names? Is it that we've become so accustomed to everything be a reboot, repeat, re-imaging of the same tired crap that we can't appreciate something new? There was a time when Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher weren't household names, and they appeared in a film that was relatively panned by critics. Critics in the same vain as the ones who squeed about The Force Awakens, a film not fit to hold Warcraft's jock. This film is not badly acted, and its story, while not particularly deep, is by no means simplistic.

Yes, the film is probably easier to follow if you know the characters, but I don't think that is at all necessary. Just because Lord of the Rings had been in print for 5 decades doesn't mean the majority of the filmgoers knew anything about the very complicated lore, and I remember talking to many a people who started reading the books just to understand fully what they'd witnessed in Fellowship of the Ring, so for those saying, this is no Lord of the Rings, it is a lot closer than many professional critics are giving it credit for.

My advice, see the movie. It is honest to god better than another flipping super hero movie.

"Critical reviewers" stop comparing this movie to Lord of the RINGS or Game of Thrones, that is like comparing The Walking Dead with Fast and Furious, you simply can't. this movie is good, a bit confusing, let me make you a check list instead.

Soundtrack = Amazing (capture the essence of Warcraft music)
Easter Eggs = A lot of them (really good if you are a wow player)
Story = it just tells the Story from Warcraft 1 but can be a bit confusing (when you think about, the Warcraft LORE is HUGE so to fit that into a movie is really hard, they done a great job, but it could be better done)
Actors = this is hard, they all do a great job, Travis Fimmel could have done it better, that is about it
OVERALL this movie is 7,5

SO what are you waiting for? stop reading my review and watch the movie, you will love it, AND we all hope for a sequel, I wanna see Arthas Menethil story in a warcaft.

I should preface this by saying that not only was I SURE this movie would be terrible, I was SO sure that over time I started actively rooting against the film.

SO, it came as a surprise that what I got instead was a decent fantasy movie. One that I enjoyed more than any of the Hobbit movies, even with all of the obvious setting up of future movies (studios need to stop doing this), lackluster acting, and some cheap effects, the movie came off as a solid 7/10 film for me.

Duncan Jones did the fans of the series real service, maybe even too much; I played a lot of WoW years ago, and grew up playing the RTS series, so I was very at home in the world, but I don't know how well the world-building was fed to the uninitiated. There was a lot going on in a movie that was 2 hours long.

Ultimately, I got used to the CGI in the same way I did the new Planet of the Apes movies, so the fights were fun, Gul'dan and his death magic were awesome, and it was oddly not predictable.

It feels like a film made for Warcraft fans to enjoy and not the greatest movie to walk into knowing nothing. People who may not know the lore behind the Warcraft series may not get the same story experience as a fan but they will still be able to enjoy the surprisingly intense action scenes and beautiful CGI. As a fan myself I found I was nerding out every other second about some little detail in the background or environment, those things is what made the movie for me. Seeing them travel through Stormwind/Ironfordge and other places gave me that feeling of "Hey, I've been there before. I know this place." But it's exact reasons like that why I think this movie is focused on Warcraft fans and not new goers to the franchise. Overall the Story wasn't the greatest thing but it is part of the Warcraft story that needs to be told to set up for future movies if they plan on it. CGI was amazing and I found myself speechless multiple times from Orcs and Humans fighting. True fans will spot plot holes as well witch is sad to see in a movie of this level. All in all if your a Warcraft fan go watch this movie and nerd out but for anyone else, Wait and watch it in the comfort of your own home. Expand

The film still lacked great story telling though or a good reason for existing. However the musical score was at least solid and there was some good fantasy; I admit. In the end it probably would been better if they didn't leave it open for sequels. The film is a hit in China. In the U.S, it might not have been enough of a hit for sequels unfortunately.

I had low expectations from this movie coming in but it surprised me in a lot of ways. I view this as test movie for blizzard to see if there is a market and I think there is. I think the movie delivered a good story. Was beautifully with good computer effects. They blended in and it really worked well in the movie.

The acting was okay. I'd say they differed in the performance but some where better and others worse but all in all they did the job.

The more I think about the movie the more I liked it. It was a bit fast paced but it was expected and I think coming movies will become even better. It was a good watch and I think 7 is a fair grading considering the special effects, acting, story and how pleased I felt after the movie.

There is room for improvement but this was not bad watch at all

Warcraft is far from a perfect film, with some wonky dialogue and hammy acting performances, but it is nonetheless a faithful adaptation of the source material that captures the odd mix of the serious and the goofy that is the Warcraft aesthetic.

Filmin Eksileri:

-Medivh'in geçmişi 3-4 cümle ile anlatıldı.

Way too many WoW fans are giving this movie a 10. Really, it's not as bad as the critics are saying (3.2/100), nor is it a 10/10 like some video game nerd.
This movie is somewhere in the middle. The characters have little development, in fact a half breed female orc has the most development because she is in the most scenes and has more dialogue than any other character. The movie takes you across the world of...warcraft. It's quite amazing, unfortunately there are only scenes; 2-3 minutes with each new scene. At some point, you just don't care any more because there is no introduction to anything, they are just showing you viewpoints of nice places that are probably from the game.
The CG is like from the movie Hobbits. It's nice but if you really analyze it, you realize they is very little weight to what characters do.
The biggest problem is introductions/pacing. There was a BRIEF moment of elves in the movie..the one elf that was shown had 2 words to say and 5 seconds of screen time.. LIKE COME ON

It is based on the Warcraft video game series and novels set in the world of Azeroth. The film stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky and Daniel Wu. The film portrays the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs and takes place in a variety of locations established in the video game series. The film was first announced in 2006 as a project partnership between Legendary Pictures and the game's developer, Blizzard Entertainment.

-Warcraft will premiere in Los Angeles on June 6, 2016 and is set to be released by Universal Pictures in the United States on June 10, 2016. It has received negative reviews from critics and has grossed over $70 million.

--Filming:

-Principal photography began on January 13, 2014 and lasted for four months, finishing on May 23, 2014. Filming took place primarily in Vancouver among other locations. Post-production lasted twenty months. Regarding the use of computer-generated imagery, Jones said, "It's a tool like any other. It can be done well and it can be done **** The best CGI has you forgetting (that) it's CGI, and accepting the visual as whatever it is supposed to be—like props. No one has an issue with props in film, do they?"

--Production:

-Development:

-Duncan Jones also faced personal struggles during filming as his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after Jones took over, furthermore his father, David Bowie, also died from cancer late in production. Jones thus summed up the challenge by telling The New York Times. "My film started and ended with cancer".

--Critical response:

-Warcraft has received negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 19%, based on 42 reviews, with an average rating of 4.2/10. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 31 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews."

-Dave Robinson of Crash Landed meanwhile praised the films depiction of the Orc race and the motion capture performances portrayed by the actors.

Ignore the critics on this one. Worse than the mario bros movie? Don't make me laugh.

Is the movie perfect? Not at all. Was it still entertaining? Absolutely

I went with 2 friends, a guy and a girl, who have never touched the Warcraft series at all and know nothing about it. They both really enjoyed the movie and zero problems following it.

The CGI was FANTASTIC, the magic looked good and fit within the Warcraft world. Acting varied from good to meh. Some of the best moments were between Durotan and Drakka. They had great chemistry, especially for being CGI orcs.

Yes, the movie is flawed and Duncan Jones has already commented on how much he had to cut to meet studio demands for the length. This was detrimental to several plot points (such as never explaining what happened to the orc homeworld, what fel is, etc).

I'm hoping the film made enough to warrant a sequel so that we can begin moving to the games that actually had stories (WC1, what this film was based on, was the most bare-bones plot of all the games).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was visually at par with a Blizzard Cinematic (Which is a good thing). The overall story, as well as character stories -felt rushed. The magic scenes were spectacular, but some of the fight scenes were lacking in intensity. I don't even remember the names of supporting characters, namely the guardian-apprentice; who's name I feel I should remember as they end up being a pretty important character. Viewers should remember that this movie is a story from the Warcraft RTS games, not just World of Warcraft, so don't go in expecting to see all the races, although some were visible. Not a bad movie at all. Expand

I came into this movie expecting the worse, due to the critic reviews. I also came into Star Wars with low expectations despite critic reviews.
It would appear that user reviews are actually far more reliable.

While I am familiar with the lore, I don't play the game.
The movie's setting is as complete as it can be without overwhelming the audience with names of kingdoms, characters, races, which is an impressive feat, I did not think it would achieve.

If you are a hardcore fan, you might be disappointed in the lack of detail on the kingdoms/dranei/etc, but it makes it much more accessible to the general audience.

The original lore is much more intricate and complicated, and it does a great job of giving a simplified adaptation, which means it’s also a little bit far from the original lore, but it does it fairly well.

There are a lot of elements that are not fully explained, which from what I've read caused great anger from critics, who seem to have wanted to be spoon-fed every explanation.
That being said, while the movie is definitely internally-consistent, some of the missing details can cause confusion. It is like trying to collapse half a season of game of thrones into 2 hours.

This makes it feel a bit rushed, but that's not on the actors or the direction, rather on how much they tried to squeeze in, making the writing a very difficult task.
Because of this, they lost a lot on character development and we don't get to relate much to Durotan or the Orc culture.

The settings and art are beautifully done, the acting is adequate though limited by the fact that they couldn't develop that many characters concurrently.
The adaptation is impressive, albeit not loyal to the lore. It is worth noting that Warcraft lore is more of a history than a narrative.

Critics never really gave the movie a chance, and if you read the reviews, you can tell how they never tried to understand it.

Give it a chance, most questions you might have might at the end will be answered in the sequels

For the Horde! 7/10

5.5+ 1.5 stars for the orcs. I'll get to why in a moment.

The costumes, scenery, designs and effects are incredible. The orcs are amazing and I didn't see any generics. Every member of the horde had their dress, bones of animals and unique weapons. They were brutish, fearsome and massive. The combat really gave the impression that a single orc was worth five human soldiers.

Unfortunately the dialogue is pretty atrocious. I understand where comments about bad acting come from, but I don't think it was the actors so much as the script. During moments of tension dialogue is spoken as if there is not a battle raging around the characters.

Example:
During a battle do you say "Sara, come ride the horse with me" or "Sara!, with me!" ?

Unfortunately the writers chose the former. Non-combat scenes are a little verbose. There is an art to meaningful small talk that I don't think the writers have the hang of yet. At times it feels like the characters are afraid to use anything but textbook proper English.

The translation may throw some people off once in a while. When an orc speaks he speaks English and humans in the background speak a strange tongue. When humans speak it is in English and the orcs in the background speak a strange tongue. This is done in the middle of a few scenes. In the two seconds it took to realize what they had done I realized I liked it a lot for movies with fictional languages.

The movie showcases many different locations, cramming a lot of fan service in. While I haven't played vanilla in many years yet the locations are recognizable. That is very cool. It shows how iconic the realms of Azeroth stand in the minds of fans. Unfortunately, a flat dialogue that doesn't ratchet up tension coupled with scenery you want the film to spend time in just makes everything start to feel rushed.

The Orcs. 1.5 stars. The detail on the orcs was stunning. The facial expressions and the movement was stunning. Warcraft is Orcs vs. Humans. Humans are done. People exist. To breathe life into the orcs was the hard part and they did it with smashing success. The drama and dialogue for the orcs was much stronger and felt closer to real life than the alliance.

This was a great foray into the lore of Warcraft that started it all long before the MMO. If the future movies are more story focused and better scripted I will definitely be buying tickets in the future.

Though I didn't feel the connection with the characters, and if it took to play WoW and/or finish Warcraft 3, well that's too bad... I don't know what's the deal with people complaining with the CGI, it's freaking perfect. Either they're blind or stupid, because it fits perfect with the Warcraft universe and with humans. This is the Warcraft movie we all dreamed of, for a very long time... visually.

And although the movie felt great to watch, just with a fully polished storytelling could've been a masterpiece.

The fact that there's "professional" reviewers who have it such an objectively ridiculous score just further shows the inanity of critics. It's a solid film, the visual, while not the best, are great most times, solid performances all around, and just a nice entertaining movies. A bit dense to take in, but nothing really poorly done within it. It's not a masterpiece, but it's great popcorn fantasy. Expand

Mostly well-acted as well, although Ben Foster is actually really bad throughout and really chews the scenery. It does end in an open-ended sequel-prepared fashion which is a bit frustrating also and probably won't be fulfilled by the sequel it desires. Perfectly competent though and slightly compelling. Working through my Blu-Ray backlog, I finally reached Warcraft. This is a movie that is obviously based off of Blizzard's iconic Warcraft series in order to milk that IP for all of its financial worth.

Did it succeed?

I would say Yes. Largely.

In fact I would recommend this film to anyone who wants a comfortable fantasy flick and I even finished the film with a smile on my face. I will state for balance that I have been a player of Blizzard's series since Warcraft 3 and played World of Warcraft until the end of Arthas' story in patch 3.3, so take that as you will.

The film is effectively the first video game compressed and changed in order fit into the 123 minutes run time and it actually works without leaving too much for the audience the wonder about. The major heroes and villains of the movie are both played well, although I will say that those on the Human side: Lothar, Khadgar and King Llane (played by Travis Fimmel, Ben Schnetzer and Dominic Copper respectively) did seem a bit wooden and at times even a little tired. But it did not have a jarring impact on the film. Even with the huge amounts of CGI the Orc actors portrayed themselves well and were thoroughly believable. Except maybe Paula Patton, playing Garona the half-orc, she did seem very robotic even in the emotional parts.

The CGI was fantastic and was great for the larger scale battles but it does look odd in close up - there is a scene early on with Durotan and wife where it really hits you with the Uncanny Valley. But overall the CGI is consistently strong, from the actors to the battle effects. I will say however that the entire movie felt too clean, too fake. I know that is odd to say however it is true. If one was so watch Lord of the Rings after this then they will see what I mean. There is violence in this movie but there is no grit.
There were also some wonderful cameos from the other races of Warcraft which I really hope that will appear in a sequel. The Story itself is effectively altered retelling, but although I was annoyed at this, for anyone trying to get into the Warcraft IP it does a decent job balance things it tells you and things it leaves you wondering about. If you want to tease people with a bigger world beyond this film then this is how you do it.

Overall I would say this is a successful video game movie adaptation, and considering the sheer amount of cockups by companies in the past to jump industries, Warcraft does exceedingly well - just like World of Warcraft did when it first launched. It has problems and really I would never to go see this movie in at launch - a DVD/Blu-Ray definitely though. But that is only due to the fact that cinemas are just so damn expensive and this isn't an AAA production that is worth the extortionate price.

I still do not know what Blizzard did not decide to make a Trilogy based off of Arthas Menethil's story - But I am hopeful that Blizzard will see that they have some decent stories that can be turned into decent films.

Warcraft, in my opinion, destroyed that and managed to make a good movie. There has been a piece in the past that I liked, and it was Assassin's Creed, which got some hate, but I liked it and since then I've come to believe that movies based on games are slowly but surely starting to work and Warcraft just confirmed that in my opinion. Beautiful CGI. Cool plot. Cool fight scenes. What can I say. It just worked. Maybe I even liked the movie because I'm not a Warcraft fan and so I don't know any of the story or just don't know what it's about properly. A friend of mine who is totally into the world of Warcraft, she just didn't like the movie. So I don't know if this movie will only be for those who don't know much of the game. On the one hand, I remember just well enough that I'm a big fan of the Assassin's Creed series and I've played (except for the minor ones) all the episodes and I loved the movie. (Probably the only one). So purely for me, Warcraft is a good movie to recommend. Expand

It was an entertaining movie, but something felt missing and I can't place my finger on it, maybe it was too much story pushed into 1 film like BvS, meaning you don't have time to take in whats happening as its already onto the next part.

I'm probably a bigger fan of Warcraft and know more about the lore than most people here writing reviews. That said, I'm not blindly going to give it a 10/10 like many of the rapid fanboys are doing. While enjoyable, this move has some big problems. Some of the acting is mediocre and the movie just jumps around from scene to scene too quickly. This creates some pacing issues and makes everything feel very convoluted at times.

The high points of the movie definitely have to be the sets and combat scenes. The sets look very, very good and Stormwind and Dalaran are just breathtaking. The combat scenes are also exciting and well done-- not a whole lot I can say about these without giving away spoilers. But they're pretty thrilling to watch, especially the final battle. I wanted to love this movie, but I just can't. Even though I'm a huge fan of Warcraft, I just can't say that this is a good movie-- It''s not bad either, though. It's just.. an okay movie. if you're a fan of the franchise...yeah you should probably see this. But if you're unfamiliar with Warcraft, you'll probably want to skip this one or wait until it comes out on video.
