First of all the CGI for the orcs! That might be the best CGI characters I have ever seen in a movie ever. While I agree the human side of the story lacked some depth, the orc side was very compelling. You felt for these characters Durotan, Garona and Orgrim were very well done. Gul'dan was a very terrifying villain and really evokes great emotion on screen. The actors who did play human characters, notably Medivh and Lothar were excellent. The battle scenes were friggen awesome. This movie is HIGHLY underrated in my opinion.

I wasn't expecting much but was really blown away by the depth of the story and the conflicted and human characters (of all races). This movie is well worth your time and money. Fantastic visuals and music that adds to the atmosphere result in an immersive experience. The CGI was really well done, and provided almost an emotional connection with the orcs. The story is rather confusing, especially if you don't know the basic lore of the universe, but it's nothing that complex, and it's supposedly because of a forty minute to one hour cut that was made. That doesn't excuse it, but rather makes me interested in a director's cut with all of that left intact. It's not Lord of the Rings worthy, or a film you have to see irrespective of genre, but if you're a fan of the genre, the film is well worth your money. Expand

TL;DR: Pleasantly surprised.

Walked in knowing very little about the Warcraft universe or its lore, and walked out eager to learn more. The first half an hour or so was a lot of information but I didn't feel it was too much that the average person couldn't follow. I enjoyed the story overall, seeing equal perspectives of both Orcs and Humans was brilliant. I naturally thought all the Orcs would be the antagonists (not knowing the lore) but found myself rooting for them more than the humans. Which is also a good time to mention that the Orc CGI was unreal. About 12 seconds into the film there's a close up of Durotan that gave me goosebumps. Also a huge GG to the mocap actors that brought the Orcs to life, they stole the show in my opinion. Congrats to Universal and everyone involved in making this film, they took a risk and it payed off!

I saw this film a few weeks prior to the US release in Germany and I was so frustrated that the user reviews were locked for this film. The Critics were totally off base on this one.

The film is not perfect but I enjoyed it enough to pay for a second round at the theater. I didn't really connect to the characters but the film is really able to sell the world. I felt immersed in a beautiful cinematic universe with believable fantasy wildlife and magical powers.

The action was brilliant, The Magic was beautiful and the Overall quality of this film was really high.

Honestly this film is a 7/10 for me, I'm giving it 9 to help the average as the Critics genuinely angered me on this one.

Simple.... but its kind of tricky to rate the movie, because i feel people will think "wow fanboy" compared to the critics, yes I'm a fan indeed. I also understand the part where new people with 0 knowledge might get totally confused, because it is a lot of characters that is stuffed into this movie, but on the other hand, I would applaud them for being able to tell such a story in 2 hours.

Which is also why the critics claim that the wasn't enough for the characters, that is also true, because everyone of them, has so MUCH more to show, that 2 hours just wasn't enough. Even though, everything else was amazing, the CGI and everything else was executed just fine! ;)

The critics understands nothing, and maybe plays 2 hours of World of Warcraft and thinks that is what the movie should reflect, even there, they got the game wrong.

And also many of the critics criticize the obvious line that are given to the characters "Was is coming", but which movie doesn't do that? Even Game of Thrones does it... "Winter is coming"...
But there is a difference walking in with a open mind, or already thinking that it would be the worst movie. A 9/10 here, and I would recommend watching it :)

Most of us are tired of all these Hollywood style movies, from which every new fantasy film presents just a re-hashed story. That is boring and useless.

Warcraft is none of that, which is exactly why critics rooted in the status quo don't like it and people looking for a genuinely heroic story will love it. I loved it, I felt it expressed authentic emotions, it had some really good CGI. It's true, it had some maybe embarrassing, childish, moments, but they pale in comparison with overall feeling of the movie.

IFirst off, I am slightly surprised by the negative critic reviews on this. While I can admit there are maybe some issues in the first 45 minutes or so of the movie for non-players (maybe a little too much fan service, name dropping...) I don't think it is movie breaking. I am honestly not real sure what they were expecting here. It is a fantasy movie based on a very fantastical video game series. The video game is rich in lore, which is used to great effect here. The use of CGI is done well, even though there is a lot. Again - it is based on a video game, so I don't think it is a foul.

The movie is fun... period. It follows a story arc that precedes World of Warcraft (what many gamers familiar with the series have played) and is done really well. It brings in a lot of locations, characters and elements from the games. Much of it will be recognizable to people who have played World of Warcraft. The characters are well done, especially the Orcs. Without providing too much in the way of spoilers, the story is fairly deep. It isn't as simple as good vs bad (at least not as you are maybe expecting with humans vs orcs) and I appreciate that.

TLDR version: If you like fantasy flicks and/or Warcraft, I don't think you will be disappointed with this film. It is a fun and exciting ride, it gives you a nice story that has some depth and brings in a lot of elements from the games for the fans.

Characters like Durotan, Orgrim, Gul´dan, and Garona are very well portrayed. The visuals are very well done, and if you played Warcraft I decades ago, or even if you are a World of Warcraft player, you will truly find yourself in Azeroth.
The story is very simplified to fit in the time available in the movie, and with this, many good things and stories are left behind (like the Doomhammer prophecy). Many changes are made in the original story, and the human characters are portrayed younger. But even if you are a very purist fan, you can enjoy this movie, because you can still “feel” the characters and the world as something real.
The main problem, in my opinion, is the edition of the movie; when it came to the theatres, it lost 40 minutes (25% of its original size), and it has compromised a lot many moments. You can still understand everything that happens, but you can clearly see that “something is missing”, what is a shame.
Warcraft is not, and was never meant to be, another Lord of the Rings (it could be if the movie had three hours and more work on some areas), but it is a very good fantasy movie. Even if you have never played anything related to this universe, you can understand well the whole story. And if you are a fan, you will really feel at home.

I'm a fan of the Warcraft saga and went to see the movie with four other people who know nothing about the game. We all liked it and thought it was way better than expected from the trailers.

PROS:

- Probably the best CGI and VFX in the history of cinema. The Motion Capture for the Orcs was fantastic and deserves an Oscar for sure.
- Places, armors, magic and everything were created with care to look as similar to the game as possible.
- The plot is based on the original Warcraft (1994 strategy game). There are a couple of changes here and there, but nothing major.
- No boring, slow or dead moments. There is always something happening.
- From the trailers you could expect a love story between Orcs and Humans, but actually it's just a hint (less than Bruce Banner and Black Widow in the last Avengers movie).
- Lots of Easter Eggs for the die-hard fans of the game.

SO-SO:

- Acting was ok. Not exceptional, but also not as bad as most people want you to believe (for comparision, Kylo Ren from the latest Star Wars was worse).
- The soundtrack was good, but not great. Maybe because Warcraft players are used to hear truly amazing soundtracks from the game.
- The major plot twist is hinted in the first half of the movie and everyone could guess it, even people who don't know the lore.

CONS:

- The first 30 minutes of the movie are so fast paced that some people didn't understand what was going on. That's because director Duncan Jones was forced to cut a lot of scenes and ended up with a 123 movie instead of 160. Fortunately, an Extended Edition is planned for DVD/BluRay release.
- Some major characters from the lore have a very small role in the movie and do basically nothing.
- The plot can be confusing to people who never played any of the Warcraft game.

I would give the movie 8,5/10 and recommend it to anyone, not only Warcraft fans. It's not LOTR but it doesn't want to be, it's a completely different story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost, this movie is 100% fan-service.
It's enjoyable apart from that, but ultimately it's going to be hard for people unfamiliar with the source material to follow.
They did a really great job of setting up the plot and introducing the pivotal characters to the story in a very quick and efficient way as well as developing them in such a way that you legitimately begin to feel for them and the struggles they encounter.
It's also worth mentioning, this movie is not "World of Warcraft". It's "Warcraft" as in the PC game from years ago.
The plot was conveyed very well, the locations are iconic and very easily recognizable and the ultimate easter egg was right near the beginning Lotrhan is riding through the woods to Goldshire and there's a lone murloc in the foreground that lets out that iconic gurgle from WoW.
Even if you're not a fan, as I mentioned, it's an enjoyable movie, the fight scenes are incredible, the characters are well-written, and the sense of panic from both sides is very real.
I gave it a 9/10 just for the fact that in the 2.5 hour run-time, they could have done a bit more to explain some of the plot for people that are new to the series.

If there's something you have to ignore, it's definitely not this movie, but rather the Critic's Metacritic score, the column on the left and most of the critic reviews.
The latter somewhat affects the viewers' subconscious;
"Oh, it's your typical human warrior character. Can't they think of something interesting?"
"Hmm, they did go for it and gave those barbaric-looking creatures a contrasting side in their personality - such as cheesy idea."
"Meh, they're tried hard to make that character relatable, it's disgusting. He/She now annoys me every time he/she is onscreen."
"The 3D sceneries look too beautiful making it look fake!"
"Blah blah blah."

I'm not saying this movie has lots of cliches. It's just that that kind of critic mindset makes an idea annoying for a viewers' mind when it could've been welcoming prior to finding out about the critics' opinions. Making movie goers look for something that isn't what the movie is giving them.
I mean, why can't something in movies be what it is instead of something that hasn't been done before?

My parents watched it with us, knowing nothing about the game. And when the film was finished, we all had smiles in our faces because of how surprisingly enjoyable the movie was. The pacing was fast enough and the events that unfold are intriguing. It's probably the only movie so far that gave me a reason to temporarily avert my attention to something else.

We all eagerly wait for the sequel!

My only gripes about the film is that there are stuff I wished that lasted longer/carried over to the next film and it's disappointing that it won't be so. There was a cringe-y moment for me but thankfully, it was forgettable.

Oh, and also avoid those "Warcraft fans" that has a very different definition of "loose adaptation" in mind, complaining why the lore barely resembles that in the game, etc.

To cut things short, this movie is highly entertaining and is worth your money ask your friends and family to give it a go!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a Warcraft movie. For the Warcraft fans, GO SEE THIS MOVIE! For the non fans or people interested? GO SEE IT. This movie absolutely nails all aspects related to Warcraft. The acting was incredible, from all sides of the war. You could feel the effect of the powerful acting, you could feel the emotions that the characters themselves are feeling in the most powerful of ways. The art and design, was spot on! The magic was designed perfectly, the costumes and looks of the characters were perfect! The movie truly payed homage to the Warcraft lore and kept to the story to a T.

My only gripe with the movie, was the fact that to make it easier on people, you definitely needed a VERY BASIC understanding of the Warcraft lore. knowing a bit of the lore makes a lot of this easier to digest, cause as we all know, warcraft has a very convoluted story. But even for the non fans, as long as you pay attention and watch, the movie is still very easy to follow and get in to. But because of that, it misses the 10/10 just slightly.

Overall, this movie is well worth any Warcraft fans time and money. You will not be disappointed, and I know I wasn't.

Good job Blizzard, I'm proud!

This movie succeeds in giving the viewer a universal enough approach to please fans AND newcomers. They did not try to send us their whole bestiary and mythology in the first place. The story is deep enough to keep us thrilled, the character design is faithful to the franchise, with its quality (omg orcs) and flaws (playmobil look), without any compromise, and that is why it is a good movie. It resisted the blockbuster call that so many fell for.

The visuals are amazing with a beautiful world, great magic effects and some of the best CGI characters made yet. The story is mostly based on the game with the same name, Warcraft 1 and the novels Rise of the horde and The last guardian and they did a great job getting those stories on the big screen. The story is about the orcs traveling to a new world thanks to a portal fueled by the orc warlock Gul'dan. Their old world is dying of corruption and they need a new home. They come to the new world Azeroth consisting of the Humans an also dwarfs, high elfs and other species. Once the orcs and the humans meet a war starts and you get to follow the story both through the orcs perspective and the humans. From there you have a story full of different motives, magic, action and battles and you will diffidently be entertained through the whole movie. The things that bring this movie down a bit is that there is so many different characters you get to follow and you would want to know more about them then the movie actually tells. The movie could have gained a lot by adding another 20-30 minutes to flesh out the characters a bit. Also some of the acting could be questionable for some but was not bothering me. So overall Warcraft is great movie that is obviously set up to have sequels. If you like Warcraft or any type of fantasy/action packed movies this one is for you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie has it's fair chunk of flaws. Narrative is a bit rushed and messy, writing and dialogues are forced and awkward at certain moments. There are couple a forced, borderline stupid drama attempts, namely *SPOILERS* *SPOILERS* Anduin-Garona romance and death of Anduin's son.

However, love and effort put into making this movie, treats and easter eggs for those familiar with Wacraft universe and lore, supplemented by absolutely stunning visual effects and motion-capture -, completely outweigh the flaws. Cherry on top, the absolute joy to behold was outstanding portrayal of Durotan - despite his story being heavily changed from the original lore - this movie and Toby Kebbell's acting managed to capture and display true essence of this heroic orc. Lok'tar Ogar!

They succeeded in making the orcs seem very lifelike and believable; same goes for the animals and the magic. The attention to detail was spectacular. The plot split from the lore a bit, but the essential was there and very well adapted to film. Many nods were made to the fans, the games, the characters, the settings, the armour pieces, the spells, etc. It was familiar, but different in a pleasant way. I felt like I was rediscovering a home. I would see the film again as I feel there is still more to be seen.

Most important note: The movie starts meh, and gets increasingly better as time goes on. If you're someone who is very, very, extremely not open to new experiences, or someone who expects this to have a Lord of the Rings tone and will feel utterly disappointed otherwise (that's like judging ever action/drama on whether it is The Godfather), this movie may not be your best choice. If you're anyone else, then: for the past 29 hours since seeing the movie, I have been thinking "Oh My Gosh that was amazing!!." But it is fast and has confusing names, so if I didn't know the names of the 6 or so main characters before watching it (from trailers) I may have liked it less. Also, it helps to know what the Fel is. It's the green magic. They mention it quickly at the start and it's hard to catch. This is an action-fantasy. It packs a punch but requires you tolerate the first 20min, a whirlwind of names and places. It's not a fairy tale like LOTR or Harry Potter. It's closer to Die Hard with Orcs. Also, are the lines cheesy? Yes. I can't argue that. But if the amazing story draws you in, you get over it. Script is another thing that's worst at the start.

I (know little bit of warcraft stuff) loved it. Person I saw it with (knew nothing except two sentence premise) loved it. This movie is a high fantasy movie. That is the genre, but the tone is action. Don't expect a fairy-tale-like story (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter) and especially not something told in the nearly-lyrical Lord of the Rings fashion. Rather, it is an interesting world with magic that hits hard and punches that hit harder. You don't have a nobel, driven Aragorn, but rather a sarcastic-talking fighter that fights when he cares and fights when he doesn't. It's not going to be one of the top 20 movies as all time (like LOTR might be), but its one of the most enjoyable I've ever seen. If Lord of the Rings is The Godfather of fantasy, then the is more like Crank or John Wick, with the plot complexity of a Game of Thrones episode.
I saw this movie in IMAX 3D and I like it for more than the visuals, but that certainly helped the immersion and helped me buy in to the movie, something that many critics seemed to have trouble with. I would strongly note that the movie starts okay but kinda meh, and it gets increasingly better as time goes on, leading to an amazing final act. Both me and the person I saw it with are a forgiving audience (though her more than I generally), and I think that if someone is not satisfied immediately then looks for problems, well like any new fantasy world it requires some trust to buy in to. Not more than any other, but that is a component of fantasy.
I had personally seen all the character trailers, and I was able to clarify who's who for my friend as the movie goes on. It is most enjoyable if you catch every line, like any other movie, but this one goes by fast and I do not know to what extent my ability to remind my friend who the main 6 or so characters were early in the movie affected their love of it. I'd say it would help to know who Durotan, Ogrim (he has a hammer), Blackhand (gross beard), Gul'Dan (evil-looking), Garona, and Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) are beforehand, if for no other reason than that it takes a few minutes to tell characters apart.
The acting is not the best I've ever seen, but its pretty good. Ben Foster, Paula Patton, and Anna Galvin sell the story best, and Travis Fimmel and Toby Kebbel are pretty good, with the rest of the cast at the back of the pack. To be fair, none of them had much to work with script-wise, which is probably the biggest negative of the entire film, especially at the beginning (like I said, starts at its weakest and gets better).
Ultimately, this movie is insanely fun. EVen though I've played a little World of Warcraft, I only caught one reference and in the game I'm not invested in either humans or orcs, so I came in with nothing other than the excitement of a large-scale fantasy flick with orcs that pack a punch.
Relative to real-world technology eras, if Lord of the Rings was medieval, this may be closer to renaissance.
I never got that emotional, but I'm not an emotional movie watcher in general, even at the end of the first season of game of thrones. My friend is sorta the opposite, and I could see her getting stressed out as she sat next to me during some scenes. I don't think the average movie-goer will come out of this with wet eyes, but it does have some real emotional weight for those that don't reject it in the first 20min.

Producers of the movie have not followed strictly lore written in books, therefore there are some differences. Probably to make the story easier to understand , they had to make some changes. Hollywood has finally made a great video game based movie.Forget what the critics have to say about this movie, drop any doubt the reservation that you have about seeing this movie, and buy an effing movie ticket!

This movie transported me into a world that I have only previously visited with in my imagination. Duncan Jones adaptation of the video game work was so accurate to my minds image, I was almost brought to tears. Now, there were a few liberties that were taken as far as story goes but they were understandable and slight enough to forgive. If the tweaks weren't there the movie would have been at least another three hours longer.

Pros- Everything lolz
But more seriously- The sets, attention to detail, special effects, acting done by Durotan/Orgrim/Guldan/Garona/Lothar was fantastic, story was fun, action was rich, true to source material.

Cons- only one con!
The actor who played Khadgar pulled me from the illusion a couple times throughout the film, he just seemed out of place. Still, a forgivable performance. The kid that played Lothars son must have won a contest to be in the movie or something because he was not an actor.

In Conclusion- Go to the theater, buy a ticket, NOW. Must watch twice movie. 9/10

I have played every Blizzard title to date, and I was not sure whether to watch this movie after the dismal reviews given by the critics.

But after watching the movie, I believe this honest adaptation of the Warcraft lore sits right up there in terms of movie quality with the likes of Avengers and all the other Marvel movie titles that came out recently.

In terms of movie quality, let's break it down.

First, casting. There is nothing to criticise here at a high level. I did not get a sense of "Oh man, they should have really cast another actor for this role". Understand that the casting choices would have been influenced by the China ownership of the related studio behind the movie, but this did not show itself during the movie. Daniel Wu, a noteable Chinese actor was not recognizable in the movie. A testament perhaps to the good acting behind the green, in both senses of the word. The key roles were played to 8/10 standard across all key characters, and then some. Well done to the casting for both protagonists along the Alliance/Horde divide. The only really familiar face to the movie/tv series western watching audience would be the Preacher lead in the role of the King. And this is only because the Preacher series recently begun. The only key role which I felt had a questionable casting was Ben Foster. I use the word "questionable" in a neutral stance. Ben Foster brought his own style to the role, which departs from what I imagined the character, an old, legendary wizard, to be. Ben Foster brought humanity into the role, of which fragility came along as baggage. This could have been a directorial decision. But I would have preferred more majesty, finesse, and flair. But I believe the producers made up for that in terms of costume design, which was about high sevens out of 10. Nevertheless, Ben Foster's acting definitely brought depth and power to the key scenes of the movie. I could write pages on the performances of the other major characters on the Alliance side, but suffice to say, the polish and gravitas was there. A last word before moving on to the Horde - Travis Fimmel has successfully brought himself to (or at least close to) the forefront of the Hollywood A-list leading men category with this performance. This is not immediately apparent from the low critical acclaim, but in this age of digital social word of mouth, the paradigm has shifted, the likes of which none of the studio executives have seen - even with the recent success of the comic book to movie franchises. This is because lore owners - gamers in this case, have the final say. And I am but one of many. And this is really, for all intents and purposes, the first game to movie "franchise". I will take those quotation marks down in due course. Let's move on to the horde side acting/casting decisions.

Surprisingly, in a really delightful way, there was more soul to the orcs then what I had in mind. Or more accurately, what I believed was possible. This is a compliment to the actors, script writers, and directors as I have been gaming with Orcs for many years and not once have I really had in my mind the "softness", for a lack of better word, which should be given to these characters. The balance between the aforementioned "softness", against the concepts of "honour", "brute strength", and "savageness" was almost close to perfection on screen. I use the word perfection liberally here. A sold 8 out of 10 for the horde-side deliverance. Note that I never once thought of the words "green screen", or "CGI" while watching. In hindsight, the only thought that came to my mind while writing that sentence was a scene of a CGI-generated gigantic wolf. Not going to psychoanalyze why, but I will state that the movie was very well done (8.5/10) in terms of cinematic beauty (landscaping, creatures, architecture).

Next, since i have written such as long winded piece already, I want to touch on comparisons and benchmarks and not continue drivelling on about direction, pacing, and all that. If you compare this movie to recent movies, it comes out strong. The most recent movie in my mind which is a good comparison is of course, the X-men apocalypse title. Comparisons are difficult to do because there are so many different facets to delve into. But overall, I would rate Warcraft slightly above the latter. Please remember that that is by no means an impartial comparison as I have a strong bond with the characters and mythology in Warcraft. But I also have an almost equal journey with the Marvel universe. So take from that what you will.

Overall: Solid 9/10.

But still, one of the best game-based movies (if not the best)
LOTR is still on the top of 'fantasy' genre but this movie is not that far away.

P.S. Critics sucked a fat orc cock

I didn't have the highest of hopes for this movie based on the overwhelmingly negative critical reviews I've read. The critics did get it right for Batman v Superman after all. But how wrong they were this time...

The movie was tons of fun! I would compare this favourably to Avatar (which I enjoyed considerably less) in terms of sheer ambition and as visual spectacles. The pace of the film was really good, and 2 hours just breezed past. Characters were well fleshed out aesthetically (special praise for the awesome orc designs), and in terms of essential backstory.

With that said, the CGI and acting were a bit hit and miss at times (the lighting storm scene was terrible). The same can be said of the plot. Some of the characters' intentions and decisions were somewhat questionable. Borderline inane even. But hey, the action sequences more than made up for them!

Long story short, WATCH THIS MOVIE and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Azeroth!

FOR THE HORDE / ALLIANCE!

P.S. This movie hasn't done very well domestically, so if the deserved sequel does come out, I'm gonna thank god for China and their 1.3 billion people!

I can understand those who don't like the fantasy genre not being into Warcraft, but if you're not into the genre why are you reviewing the film? It's like reviewing a beer when you don't like beer: pointless.

A thoroughly entertaining movie that is well worth seeing at the theater. Every single one of my friends and family who has seen it also loved it.

Don't believe the critic reviews, they're flat out wrong.

It's well made in visual way, the characters looks as real as bad ass Orcs can look. Everything what You hear and see is easy to buy, with the fast paced action. The story to tell was not so simple and It's hard to shortened it with 120 minutes, but not-a-fan viewer still can have a lot of fun following it.

It is a movie you can enjoy without being a dedicated Warcraft player, but it is a move you will LOVE as a Blizzard and WoW/Warcraft fan. The joy of seeing some of one's favourite videogame characters in a film is beyond wonders, and overall the feeling I got from seeing the movie was very very notable.

This movie is a solid 8/10, but I give it a 9 for the added nostalgia it brought me.

Blizzard from the start was adamant that the movie remain true to their vision and lore, and as such they made a movie that should please even the most hardcore nerds, which is a truly epic accomplishment. Could they have cut out or altered significant parts of the lore to "speed things along" and make a better movie going experience, absolutely and I'm sure it would have received a slightly better critical review. However, nearly all video game movies get poor critical reviews as the common thinking is Comic movies - good, video game movies - bad. All that said, this movie does an excellent job of staying true to the original story (kind of a mix of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans with touches of Warcraft 3). Staying true to lore, pleasing fans, pleasing blizzard and making a movie that's watchable to non-fans is an incredibly difficult line to walk, and Duncan Jones made it happen. I look forward to seeing him take on the next one, which, with all the setup out of the way, should be significantly more fun to watch.

Additionally, and somewhat unrelated, I think the movie not being marketed as "The Beginning" in the US was a mistake. If you watch the movie as a stand-alone representation of Warcraft, you are going to think "Warcraft looks really really silly and doesn't make sense." But if you understand that this is a preamble to a significantly more interesting story (Warcraft 2 and the Lich King Saga) then you can see the awesome potential the series has.

TL;DR: Fans will get it, non-fans will struggle, the next one is going to be better.

I don't think I've ever seen such a large difference before. It's like the critics are analyzing this from the perspective of emotionless robots with checklists to go through while the users are living breathing humans coming from a living breathing world where "WarCraft" has been possibly the most successful video game franchise of all time and a fondly remembered part of tens of millions of childhoods and young-adulthoods. These things matter. The quality of a piece of art is not only in the art object itself, it's also in the social environment, in the art consumers' expectations. If it fits the audience and generates intense resonance in the audience, it's good art, regardless of any boxes ticked or not ticked on some dead-inside "quality inspectors"' checklists. Expand

First off, please do not let the critics spoil this movie for you. It is not a horrible movie, if anything it’s a good movie, not great but good. For me it was great.

So I’m going to cut the chase and keep this simple

What’s good:
• CGI, the CGI is jaw dropping, the expressions they were able to convey on the orcs faces was just amazing. You can actually see and feel what the orc characters were feeling though there body language and facial expressions. They spent a lot of time putting in all those extra details.

• Action, the action was right on the money. The crunching of the orcs attacks on the humans was morbidly satisfying. Every action and attack looked and felt real, not like a crappy choreographed movie.

• Magic, the magic in this movie was truly powerful. The problem with a lot of fantasy movies in the past (yes even the great lord of the rings, which I love) is that they were too scared or shy to show off magic abilities for characters. Most studios fear it will put off some viewers because of the cheese factor of fantasy. But man Warcraft does not give a rats @$$ about that. They do magic full on and they do it well. The mages are the most powerful characters in this movie, and it makes sense, they were almost superhero like, which felt right in context to the story.

What’s OK:
• Story, ok the story was good, what brings it down is yes they do travel to a lot of places and name drop a lot of characters and places that you will probably not know anything about. The basic structure of the story is good, it’s simply and its heroic like a fantasy should be. It’s actually not that hard to keep up with the story once it starts going. Orcs world is dying; Orcs must leave this world to find a new home. Orcs arrive on human world, fight humans to claim land. Some Orcs feel there leader is wrong and their only chance to live is to work it out with human. Humans hate orcs because of the destruction they caused. And that’s pretty much the story at its base. It’s not that complicated. But of course within the story it adds a lot more. There are good moments of character development, but sadly because the movie was cut to 2 hours instead of the full 2 hours and 45 min, we don’t get to spend a lot of time with each character.

What’s BAD:
You know as I’m writing this and I got to this part of the review, I simply cannot find anything that’s bad. I mean some things were not great, but that’s what I explained above, most of this movie ranges from Good to ok to great. Which is why this movie if you look on rottentomatoes, metacritic and IMDB, it averages a B (80%). It really is just a good movie.

So go out there and watch this movie, you will have a good time, it’s not horrible, and it’s not mediocre. The movie is unique and fun enough for the general audience in my opinion. No need to be a warcraft fan to enjoy this.

If I have to read another review of Warcraft that complains that Lothar isn't Aragorn enough and Medivh isn't old enough to be Gandalf, then I'm going to tear my hair out. I enjoyed this film quite a bit and am very disappointed in mainstream critics who should have been giving mediocre at worst reviews, who instead are giving terrible reviews to a movie with a) a fairly complex plot, b) engaging characters with motivations, c) a nuanced look at a conflict that isn't just "good guys vs. bad guys", which often is split down racial or species lines.

This is not the best film around. In fact, it's likely a 7 out of 10. But the critics are so wrong in this case, I feel that the positive user reviews are warranted.

There is a honesty and truthfulness that comes with a Duncan Jones film, from having a famous father (a true legend) Jones broke convention not becoming one of those superficial celebs making a living in the shadow of a parent. I know very little if any thing about Warcraft, I know it's big and I know it's a fantasy role playing game so I'm not going to pretend I know more than that.

Warcraft with all the whizz bang jiggery pokery, beneath the sweeping shots and special effects there is a heart felt tale about parenting and loss. What Jones' offering has is that Moon, Source Code humanity which Jones effortlessly brings to the table, that roundness and grounded feel that he stamps on his films. The script has an honesty that it's not just some money making studio movie but an indie-spirited film finely crafted on a large scale. You feel your mate made this great spectacle, there's an underlying apprehensive innocence in contrast to a sense of wonder and adventure. Warcraft seemingly feels that he isn't in it for the money, but for the story telling and artistic craft of it all.

Unusually the subtitle 'The Beginning' was absent on the title screen in the cinema version, it simply says 'Warcraft' possibly linked to the rating. While available for all to see with an adult, the battles are intense, stabbings etc. it not just the scary demon and skeletal faces that will scare the young kids but the emotional impact of orc Durotan (CGI capture Tony Kebbell) wife and child storyline. As Orc clan honour is tested, there are duelling wizards, a giant golem and griffin. Jones also briefly throws in a few elves, dwarfs and huge wolves for good measure. There's betrayal, double-crossing and retribution, the powerful magical Orc, Gul'dan (the excellent Daniel Wu) literary sucks the life of humans akin to The Dark Crystal.

The casting is not mainstream, Ben Foster's wizard Medivh avoids stereotype and is a young incarnation of a wizard, as is Llane (Dominic Cooper) a younger than expected King. Battle hard human Lothar Travis Fimmel (of Amazon's Vikings) as well as some grand action scenes, emotional set ups (one echoing the Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan showdown) he also gets comedic moments, many alongside wizard/mage apprentice Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) who again is not what you'd expect for someone so powerful. This casting works in Warcraft's favour, if you had a thing for blue women Smurfette, Neytiri and Mystique, Stark Trek olive and She-Hulk green is the new in colour with Garona Halforcen. Fittingly cast is memorable underrated Clancy Brown (of Highlander fame) as the principled conflicted Blackhand, Gul'dan's right-hand orc.

The daytime colour is bright and vivid in contrast to the pin sharp night time and darker scenes, Warcraft has a unique look and feel. The execution is near on perfect in the confines of the budget and today's capabilities with brutal sword play and battles. The director is wise to keep the focus on the interesting characters and themes of conflict, family and loyalty with Ramin Djawadi ominous score adding to the proceedings. Warriors, Kings, magicians and creatures, the human cast and the CGI performers melt together and you invest in the characters and their secret meetings and campsite confessions. The computer imagery, textured layers of animation and 3D modeling fuse with the mix of practical stunts and sets. Fimmel and Kebbell are notable but Paula Patton as hardened Garona steals the show as a go between peace keeper and will no doubt set geek hearts aflame. Writers Jones, Charles Leavitt and Chris Metzen juggle the many major characters successfully and the cast deliver the fantasy dialogue with ease.

Jones and crew give us the Matrix of fantasy, lots of things will be familiar not just reminiscent because of Lord of the Rings, Dungeon and Dragons, Fire and Ice, Planet of the Apes, John Carter to name a few. But because of an inherent subconscious of the genre that's in the ether and part of our pop culture. But like the stylised Matrix did for sci-fi (as much as I hate to admit it) after the dust settled it stood on its own feet and was a milestone in film. As a 70'd kid Warcraft for me puts magic back in the mix instead of it languishing in low budget TV shows, a soulless blockbusters or sub-par cash-ins, here Jones takes it to a fitting level where it should be and cleverly sets up a follow up.

There's unavoidable rooted fantasy tropes littered throughout and Jones injects a little nuance or twist wherever possible. As a sci-fi fantasy, medieval-ish action saga Warcraft is highly recommend.
