Really enjoyed the movie immensely. Lots of fans service, good pacing, great action scenes. As other's said. this isn't the next LotR, but it never aspires to be neither. It succeeds perfectly at what it aims to be, a Blizzard-style polished piece of entertainment. Will definitely watch again! Expand

It is a movie you can enjoy without being a dedicated Warcraft player, but it is a move you will LOVE as a Blizzard and WoW/Warcraft fan. The joy of seeing some of one's favourite videogame characters in a film is beyond wonders, and overall the feeling I got from seeing the movie was very very notable.

This movie is a solid 8/10, but I give it a 9 for the added nostalgia it brought me.
Well done. Oh and those "professional" critics should review the theory lessons they learned in university (if they did).

No. Did I like it? No. I’m just disappointed in it. This could have been a great film, it had all the potential for that, but it doesn’t work due to its poor pacing, poor characterisation and an ending which had a fight scene that was so laughably boring and it felt like the film ended on a bum note and that the sequel is just going to be rather more of the same rather than expanding the story. The film tries to be an amazing epic but it doesn’t build up its world and characters before it tries to go into that and all the character revelations and twists are really things that the majority of which should have been saved for the 2nd movie of this proposed trilogy. As it stands, however, it’s a bit of a mess. The performances aren’t great with the exception of a couple of the Orc actors, the effects are very good and reflect the video game well but are wasted because they don’t blend well with the live action actors and I just didn’t buy into this story entirely. It’s a real shame because when you take all the Hollywood adaptations of video game movies, this one is still the best, but that’s just because the bar has been set so horribly low. It’s really only there by default. This is the best one and I still don’t think it’s good. I’m certain fans will get something out of this, and just seeing these environments realised on the big screen will probably give them some joy, but I don’t judge a film by its aesthetics. I judge it by the story and the characters it gives me as well and this film wasn’t good enough with the exception of the Orcs who I thought were ok for the most part. It’s so concerned about building up an epic trilogy that it forgets to get its first part down completely. Expand

It's great to see a genuine story based on the game in such a big blockbuster movie. Most of us are tired of all these Hollywood style movies, from which every new fantasy film presents just a re-hashed story. That is boring and useless.

Warcraft is none of that, which is exactly why critics rooted in the status quo don't like it and people looking for a genuinely heroic story will love it. I loved it, I felt it expressed authentic emotions, it had some really good CGI. It's true, it had some maybe embarrassing, childish, moments, but they pale in comparison with overall feeling of the movie.

And finally i can say , An epic masterpiece & i really hope to watch the sequels soon.

I was full of doubts as no "made-of-game" movie was good enough before. Till now. Warcraft is a decent piece of action-fantasy movie. It's well made in visual way, the characters looks as real as bad ass Orcs can look. Everything what You hear and see is easy to buy, with the fast paced action. The story to tell was not so simple and It's hard to shortened it with 120 minutes, but not-a-fan viewer still can have a lot of fun following it.
If I had to review it with one sentence, I would say:

"I was full of fear, but I am no more,
with the drums of war still echoes in my soul!"

My thoughts as someone who played Wacraft 3 and WoW for over 8 years:

Pros:

1. The orc scenes were great
2. Good battle scenes overall, emphasizing the orcs' physical advantage versus humans' technology/ingenuity

Cons:
1. Terrible dialogue for most human characters
2. The human armor/weapons were so overly cartoonish they break immersion. I know they're trying to stay true to how they look in the games, but simplifying them would've made the film stronger.
3. Going off #2, the sets looked cheap and cartoonish at times. Once again, they could've simplified things down to look more medieval human historyish.
4. Bad pacing and editing - many scenes jump from one to another in a very weird way.
5. Pointless and cheesy father/son story for Lothar.
6. Trying to pander a little too much to WoW players. Things like literally copying the murloc sounds out of the game was too much.
7. Could've used less CGI in some places - like the Elwynn scenes.
8. Garona's plastic tusks

Not terrible but not what I expected after years of hype.

I haveHow this film got such a low critic score is beyond me, but then again these days critics are so jaded and conditioned by certain types of films that they can't even begin to think about embracing something out of their comfort zones. I have never played WoW and my limited experience with Warcraft 2 and 3 aren't much to go by (not to mention I'm hardly even a Blizzard fan after I found Diablo III disappointing), so I didn't have much invested in this movie or universe, but rather went in with an open mind, ready for an interesting story to unfold, and I wasn't at all let down - you might even say I was shockingly surprised at the quality of this film.

Warcraft is something new, something spectacular, and most importantly, something that uses the tropes of high fantasy to full effect, with insanely powerful magic spells, giant mounts, brutal action sequences (cleverly filmed so as to garner the PG-13 rating), and compelling storylines, bolstered by some of the best motion-capture work this side of the Planet of the Apes films. The visual effects are stunning and the pace rarely ever lets up as the viewer is whisked away to and from the many locales of Azeroth. The fight scenes are well-shot and the magic in particular stands out as being especially well-realized. For those seeking eye candy, the attention to detail in the visual effects, characters, armor, sets, and weapons is nothing short of magical. Weta Workshop's work on the armor and practical effects deserves every commendation it can get.

The worst thing I can say about this film is that it definitely feels like it was trimmed way down by the studio. Allegedly, 40 minutes were left on the cutting room floor, and I get the feeling they would have gone a long way towards fixing the rushed nature and lightning-fast subplots that marred the film's second act. I'll gladly watch a director's cut with the restored footage. If I had one other major complaint to lodge, it's that the performances are somewhat uneven, and on whose shoulders the blame rests will vary from viewer to viewer (Khadgar and King Wrynn could have been better cast, IMO).

If you're at all interested in high fantasy, even if you have no prior experience in Azeroth, I highly recommend this film. You'll likely find much more to love than to hate.

Good fun for sure. It's not often we get good fantasy movies. I went in with pretty low expectations, and left pleasantly surprised.

That being said, it's definitely a movie "for the fans." I'm not sure the uninitiated would understand a lot of the film, and might even find the -extremely- high fantasy setting to be a bit suffocating. I found myself often wondering how I would have known something if I had never played the games before.

My two biggest gripes would be the pacing and the character development, which kind of go hand in hand in a way. I found myself wanting more development, more screen time... I wanted to get to know these people more than I was able to. It falls short here.

All things aside though I feel they really did a great job bringing Azeroth to life. I hope the movie is successful. It was a lot of fun to watch and was on some level emotional for me as a life long fan. If you're a fan of fantasy and big, loud adventures then I think you will enjoy it.

Though some of their criticisms are valid, there was so much to enjoy, and the good outweighs the bad by far. It was genuinely a good story, great CGI, good acting, and at times, quite moving. I felt true concern for the heroes on both sides of the war, particularly Lothar and Durotan, which is a credit to the creators because I know they wanted to achieve that. I definitely had tears in my eyes a few times during some sad moments (and there were several). And fans of the game like me will surely enjoy seeing key places in Azeroth and some of the game's humanoid races brought to life.
I do agree that there should have been a bit more character development, and the plot moved along too fast at times, leaving people confused. I would have been fine with a little longer movie if they allowed more time for those things. I saw it in 3-D, which really brought me into the film. It was obvious that the scenes were designed to be particularly appealing in a 3-D movie, and it really worked well.
I enjoyed the movie and look forward to the next, hoping that together with international sales, the producers find that it will be worthwhile to make the sequel. If so, I hope the writers listen to at least some of the criticisms regarding the character development and overly fast pace, so these factors can be improved for the next installment.

Its a difficult task to tryAs a fan of the Warcraft games (Both RTS and MMO) for over 10 years now I wear my bias on my sleeve. The film's greatest strength is in the love and care that have gone into adapting this world for the big screen. Its a difficult task to try and distill over 20 years of lore and storytelling from one medium to another. Even more difficult is trying to tell a coherent story from this material in the space of two hours. The film largely succeeds in doing so despite a few stumbles.

Blizzard and Duncan Jones wisely chose to start from the beginning. The story is fairly simple but serviceable. If I had one criticism its that the story is fairly generic compared to those found in later games. But that isn't a slight against the film as the movie is a faithful adaptation of that story. It wasn't until Warcraft 3 that I really felt that the storytelling really became interesting.

The film can be a bit too fast paced in the beginning of the film which I do think may be disorienting to those who are not familiar with the lore. However I do feel that casual moviegoers can still have fun with it if they allow the film to exist on its own. If you can divorce yourself from the idea that the LotR is the standard of fantasy films I think you can have a great time with it and become invested in its characters.

The cast does a great job of bringing these characters to life in my opinion. Durotan and Drakka are notable standouts. Lothar and Khadgar have decent chemistry between them and I would have even liked to have seen more of it. I know Ben Schnetzer has been criticized in other reviews but I actually quite liked him as Khadgar. Another casting choice I have seen criticized is Ben Foster's Medivh. Again I actually thought he put in a decent part as Medivh. I would be remiss however if I didn't give praise for Daniel Wu's Guldan. They captured Guldan's cunning and ruthlessness perfectly.

The special effects are quite special indeed. I really do think the effects are a visual feast for the eyes. I saw the film in 3D and I even liked the extra sense of depth it added to the experience. I never really was taken out of the film by something looking fake or out of place. I found myself easily immersed in this lovingly crafted world.

The score was solid as well. If you have played the games you will recognize familiar themes from the games as well as some original music. The fantastic audio extends to the sound effects as well. Punches feel like they have power behind them and even the sword strikes and magic carry spectacular weight through the sound design.

Its worth noting that there is an abundance of fan service in the film and it never really felt too on the nose but there were some very clever subtle uses of it. Some of these may be lost on casual movie goers but I don't think they will detract from anyone's enjoyment of the film.

In the end Warcraft is a solid fantasy film and one I recommend to any fan of the property. For die hard lore fans there are some changes made to the lore but they too never detract from this adaptation. If you are a casual moviegoer my advice is to just go into the movie with an open mind. Not every movie has to be a Lord of the Rings. I do hope we see sequels so that we can get the Lich King on screen someday.

Those, who like myself, have played the game and know the lore, will understand what is going on but won't enjoy the movie as well as they already know the story.
I will start with the good elements. The creators of this movie made an obvious effort to bring the world of Warcraft to life on the big screen. The seasoned WoW player will be amazed by seeing the places, elements and characters of this game in a movie. Nostalgia, that is all I got from this movie, on the positive side.
In good fantasy movies, certain elements must be present. First: a good introduction to the fantasy world where the movie occurs, how it is different from our reality and the main plot of the movie. Second: a good introduction to the main characters, and if they are not human, what makes them different and what are their backstories. And thirdly, and this applies to any type of movie, character development; events and conversations designed to reveal the personalities, tendencies and motives of each of the main characters.
In this movie, there was not much room for any of that. Add to that the fact that the dialogues are serious and the acting is textbook to the point of making it seem like a high budget porno movie, with a few action scenes. What also stroke me as odd is the bland, almost lame dull soundtrack which is worlds apart from the great music from Warcraft and WoW games. The overall screenplay assumes the viewer is already familiar with the characters, the places and the backstory on which this movie stands. The visual effects are good but not great but the outfits of humans appeared amateurish and stupid and considering the time gap between the two, they are not much better than say: Power Rangers!
This movie was a huge disappointment, something which we WoW players have grown accustomed to. It looks like a sad attempt at creating a prequel to a series of movies about a game franchise that once was the best but now is only a pale hollow version of what it used to be. To a non-gamer, this move is a lot of hype and marketing (which is blizzard's greatest strengths to be honest), a lot of money spent on a movie that doesn't really offer much in the way of storytelling, which is generally what fantasy movies are all about, and that closes with an open ending that doesn't resolve anything.

The criticism that this is filled with tropes is itself a trope. Post modern fantasy is inherently flawed because it offers only suffering and nihilism for it's protagonists.

This is a movie that instead depicts family honor and love, leaders willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the many and the concept that anyone can be redeemed. No wonder the critics hated it.

They should have shown homosexual orcs battling feminists wielding sex toys or some other degenerate concept, to be acceptable. Yes you have some classic fantasy tropes of the good king and his noble knights, but also you have some plot twists, including honorable orc warriors and above all, incredible special effects, battle scenes and enjoyable depictions of magic. This has everything a fantasy lover could want. I'm looking forward to warcraft 2.

I can understand those who don't like the fantasy genre not being into Warcraft, but if you're not into the genre why are you reviewing the film? It's like reviewing a beer when you don't like beer: pointless.

A thoroughly entertaining movie that is well worth seeing at the theater. Every single one of my friends and family who has seen it also loved it.

I didn't have the highest of hopes for this movie based on the overwhelmingly negative critical reviews I've read. The critics did get it right for Batman v Superman after all. But how wrong they were this time...

The movie was tons of fun! I would compare this favourably to Avatar (which I enjoyed considerably less) in terms of sheer ambition and as visual spectacles. The pace of the film was really good, and 2 hours just breezed past. Characters were well fleshed out aesthetically (special praise for the awesome orc designs), and in terms of essential backstory.

With that said, the CGI and acting were a bit hit and miss at times (the lighting storm scene was terrible). The same can be said of the plot. Some of the characters' intentions and decisions were somewhat questionable. Borderline inane even. But hey, the action sequences more than made up for them!

Long story short, WATCH THIS MOVIE and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Azeroth!

FOR THE HORDE / ALLIANCE!

P.S. This movie hasn't done very well domestically, so if the deserved sequel does come out, I'm gonna thank god for China and their 1.3 billion people!

Making a videoFirst and foremost Warcraft is an exciting and fun high fantasy romp through a world beloved to many gamers around the world. It would have been oh so easy to get wrong, but Legendary and Duncan Jones achieve the impossible. Making a video game movie that's actually worth watching to both fans and newcomers. It's a solid 8, but read on for my full feelings and why I'm giving it a 10!

Warcraft is on point throughout the film, delivering a somewhat unbelievable but delightfully so world filled with over the top and enjoyable characters and magical VFX. It takes established Lore from the earliest title in the Warcraft series and expands upon it, making few changes to bring it in line with current lore and deliver a more dramatic and altogether more cohesive experience.

Characterisation is fantastic with especially strong performances from the villains of the piece, exuding an almost cheesy but endearingly fun Saturday Morning cartoon villainy mixed with genuine threat and excellent delivery.

The world itself exudes life and the set pieces are gorgeous, Warcraft fans are sure to recognise various locations and little cameos that will keep them looking for the next thing to see but for everyone else it gives an excellent look into a high fantasy world presented for the big screen, something that is dissapointingly rare in this day and age.

Actions scenes delivery appropriate punch with very high energy swordplay and brawling melees mixed in with impressive spell-casting and sorcery. Once more the magical effects are astounding and for once actually make magic look genuinely impressive in an industry that all too often eschews from trying to achieve them in favour of the all too often walked low-fantasy approach.

Acting is mostly on point, with excellent casting decisions that really bring many of the characters, particularly the orcs, to life. However a few actors come across uncomfortable or wooden, the greatest offender being Dominic Cooper as Llane Wrynn, far from the inspiring king he is meant to portray he fails to offer anything that adds to the piece and ultimately the human story down. Fortunately he is supported by an excellent trio of core characters in warrior Lothar (Travis Fimmel), Mage Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) and the half-orc that is caught between two worlds, Garona (Paula Patton) that show genuine character development as well as great on-screen performances as the budding relationship builds between the three. Ben Foster must also be commended for his performance as Medivh, the Guardian of Tirisfal whose struggles to live up to his name become a center piece for the story.

However the true stars of the show are the orcs with honourable leader Durotan (Toby Kebbell) and his trusted ally Orgrim (Rober Kazinsky) butting heads with cruel warlock Gul'Dan (Daniel Wu) and traditionalist Warchief Blackhand (Clancy Brown). Bringing a tale of honour, betrayal and distrust to the mix while giving the orcs a very human personality and story.

The Orcs themselves also look fantastic, delivered in CGI but blending seamlessly into the world with the Live Action humans. They tower meaninglessly in combat and truly strike home how massive and powerful they can be.

Having gone to see this film in the UK a week ago after reading early critic reviews I was expecting to see another dud of a video game film. I left presently surprised and decided that it would be a film to see again to experience the 4DX at Cineworld. Cinematically I enjoyed the film more the second time, and 4DX was certainly... exciting...

Overall Warcraft is extremely enjoyable for any Warcraft fan, you'll spot a few lore changes here and there but nothing that truly detracts from the experience or changes the overall theme. For newcomers I'd recommend it as an excellent entry point into High Fantasy. Don't let the critics scare you.

This film is a solid 8 out of 10 in my book. But in respect to "Professional" reviewers giving the film a 0 out of 100, which suggest that either they watched with their eyes closed, prejudged the film as a video game movie or perhaps had their firstborn murdered by the cinema staff. Who knows, either way I'm giving this film a 10, simply to balance out the laughable reviews of the critics.

Perhaps it's time for the film industry at large to re-evaluate how it looks at high-fantasy, because frankly it delivers more originality to the big screen than the dozens of Sci-Fi, Modern and Low-fantasy offerings on show these days.

So I was curious to know where they went with the story. There was a lot of easter eggs (loved the murloc sound effect when crossing the bridge) and the size and scope of the land(s) was nice to see enhanced for a movie rather than the smaller scale the technology could afford in World of Warcraft.

I was actually pretty glad to see it was prequel to WoW so as someone who hasn't read any books or anything other than playing WoW it was nice to get some prelude of the events happening in WoW proper. We FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY get to see mages/sorcerers/magicians/wizards whatever you want to call them (mages here) on the big screen do fantasic magic. Only thing I missed was there was no ice mage only fire and arcane. Yes I played mage a lot in the game haha. But I've always wanted to see mages do more in a movie that unlock doors and light the end of their staff (I'm looking at you Gandolf).

I HIGHLY recommend this movie and I plan on seeing it multiple times if I can! The critics are being typical critic snobs. If it's not an artsy fartsy movie or Marvel trash they dislike it. GO SEE THIS MOVIE IT'S GREAT!!!

I'm giving it a 7. It's on the higher end of how I may really feel about it.

Here's a few short review points to go off of.

Cons.

- The story's fluency. This is probably the biggest problem with the movie as a whole. We were told the movie had multiple directors (Which I dont know if they all worked separately to form a giant mess...) but at the times the movies jumps ALL over the place. Did not seem like they had a solid script to go off of. Scenes randomly ended, and the transition to the next scene was worse than the one before.

-Acting was bad. the female orc Garona (or half human/orc) was very hard to believe.

Pros.

+ CGI was great

+ Some battles were awesome

+ A lot of cool classes, magic, etc, lore from the game

+ The last 30 minutes or so was very well done. The story had you drawn in, the characters were building, the action was intense. After seeing the ending of the movie, I said.. The Warcraft series can easily have many sequels to come just like the Marvel franchise. They just need to work on the holes of the movie, which is mostly story telling, script, and directing. (ugh, sounds like everything)

---

Verdict.

If you are a HUGE Warcraft fan, go see it. The ending alone will make up for it. I for myself, fell asleep for a good 20 minutes. The filler was bad and some plots were all over the place, but if you can look pass it, there's something to enjoy here.

You can just FEEL the passion that Duncan Jones and the rest of the crew had for all things WC throughout the entire movie. Duncan Jones has even said in an interview "ya i was forced to cut out 40 mins that I think should still be in it...and youll see that in the directors cut which will tell a much fuller story"
It definitely had pacing issues as they simply had too much content for 2 hours... but honestly this was a movie by the fans, and for the fans of the WC universe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Las all die Geschichten, spielte jede Kampagne.
Also musste man Kompromisse eingehen.

Don't forget Blizzard is planning to release sequels which advance the story, so for an opening movie it was great. I really hope Blizzard keeps true to the roots and won't turn this into mainstream **** just to appease to the public.

Expand

Not as good as I've been expecting it to be maybe; soundtrack is mediocre at best(Ramin Djawadi obviously failed to reach his own standard), story is a bit underdeveloped due to shortness of the movie, cause 2 hours is far from being enough for a complicated story such as Warcraft's.

But I can easily say that this movie opens a new era; where movies that are based on games are not gonna be considered as garbage by default as they used to be. Warcraft-despite having some flaws- is an incredible foundation for upcoming sequels; and I have no doubt that when characters like Illidan, Arthas, Thrall and Varian joins the storyline, we'll see more focused stories and movies on par with LOTR, Dark Knight etc.

Watch this movie, you won't regret it.

Easily one the best movies based on a video game, right next to Mortal Kombat 1, as we know movie adaptations of video games tend to suck...HARD.

Problem is that the movie tends to ignore new viewers who don't know anything about the video game(s), and assumes everyone is familiar with the characters shown, so they don't bother with giving them an extensive story arc to make you care about them. Oh and the love story? Yeah, they could have gone without it, we don't really need another Pocahontas and the white man Messiah cliches.

I'm not surprised the professional critics score it low, after all this movie is no LOTR nor does it contain weird stuff filled with suffering, so the critics could drool all over it. This movie does exactly that which is meant to do: Entertain.

It is based on the Warcraft video game series and novels set in the world of Azeroth. The film stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky and Daniel Wu. The film portrays the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs and takes place in a variety of locations established in the video game series. The film was first announced in 2006 as a project partnership between Legendary Pictures and the game's developer, Blizzard Entertainment.

-Warcraft will premiere in Los Angeles on June 6, 2016 and is set to be released by Universal Pictures in the United States on June 10, 2016. It has received negative reviews from critics and has grossed over $70 million.

--Filming:

-Principal photography began on January 13, 2014 and lasted for four months, finishing on May 23, 2014. Filming took place primarily in Vancouver among other locations. Post-production lasted twenty months. Regarding the use of computer-generated imagery, Jones said, "It's a tool like any other. It can be done well and it can be done **** The best CGI has you forgetting (that) it's CGI, and accepting the visual as whatever it is supposed to be—like props. No one has an issue with props in film, do they?"

--Production:

-Development:

-Duncan Jones also faced personal struggles during filming as his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after Jones took over, furthermore his father, David Bowie, also died from cancer late in production. Jones thus summed up the challenge by telling The New York Times. "My film started and ended with cancer".

--Critical response:

-Warcraft has received negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 19%, based on 42 reviews, with an average rating of 4.2/10. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 31 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews."

-Dave Robinson of Crash Landed meanwhile praised the films depiction of the Orc race and the motion capture performances portrayed by the actors.

Though the film is guilty of sometimes leaving the lore-novice dumbfounded the writers had definitely made a great effort to have them still enjoy the movie without being too confused.

The CG on this movie is excellent and it was a great pleasure to watch the panoramic views, the orcs and the magic. The only part that I personally dislike is how they portray the night elves. Also the acting of the human characters sometimes felt weak during several of the scenes and they should've done a retake.

Hopefully blizzard will continue making sequels because this movie is definitely only an introduction to a world of intriguing stories: Day of the Dragon, War of the Ancients, Rise of the Lich King and the rest of it!

First, it is a solid, but somewhat campy fantasy movie. The spell play, I thought was VERY well done. Many fantasy movies don't show that well.

More for players: It was interesting seeing the movie showing me dungeons I had traveled to in game. I've never gotten too much into the lore in the game, but have read several of the books YEARS ago. I also quit playing years ago, so I couldn't remember a lot of the particulars, but I did know the basics. All in all, as a player, I really enjoyed the movie. I REALLY hope this is the beginning of a great series of movies.

So, the bad. The movie does start slow. There is a lot of information that needs to be given to the audience. I also found that the movie was a little confusing at times. It was also, as I said before... it is a little on the campy side. The acting is hot and cold. The CGI I thought was very good.

Way too many WoW fans are giving this movie a 10. Really, it's not as bad as the critics are saying (3.2/100), nor is it a 10/10 like some video game nerd.
This movie is somewhere in the middle. The characters have little development, in fact a half breed female orc has the most development because she is in the most scenes and has more dialogue than any other character. The movie takes you across the world of...warcraft. It's quite amazing, unfortunately there are only scenes; 2-3 minutes with each new scene. At some point, you just don't care any more because there is no introduction to anything, they are just showing you viewpoints of nice places that are probably from the game.
The CG is like from the movie Hobbits. It's nice but if you really analyze it, you realize they is very little weight to what characters do.
The biggest problem is introductions/pacing. There was a BRIEF moment of elves in the movie..the one elf that was shown had 2 words to say and 5 seconds of screen time.. LIKE COME ON

What is the most important thing of all? Viewers must support this movie because it can be the start for something really great. They decided to start from the basics so they took the story from the very first Orcs vs Human game, which is really basic and lacks the presence of many "larger than life" characters from world of warcraft.
The movie also lucks good acting and it's not friendly to someone not familiar with that lore but the actual fan will feel like home. Was it necessary to start from this point of the lore? I guess not and they probably needed to start with a blast but still it's nice to see the story of the games unfold from early on with a "light" war movie.
It's really frustrating to see how professional critics approach the movie. It's fun to read about "scenario" depth and things like from the same critics who glorify crappy movies, which are actually way more shallow and stupid.
Ok, you are gonna say that I also say some negative things about the movie so how do I answe the question "Why the film is good?" It's good because it's almost an excellent transition of a video game into a movie. It's colorful and it brings the spirit of the franchise on the big screen. It has swords, it has magic, it has shiny armors and almost everything a good fantasy movie has to include. Is it lord of the rings? No, but you will definitely have fun, you will smile a lot and if you are a fan you are gonna feel amazing watching WoW becoming a "real" thing. Now, people with little to zero knowledge about the lore and stuff may enjoy it a little less but it's still a fun action movie to watch.

The movie is a solid 8 for the fans and probably around 7 for the rest. For the alliance or for the horde, support this movie and let's teach those ignorant hipster critics a lesson. Don't tell me that you don't want to see Thrall spinning that Doomhammer or small Varian to grow up and kick some ass. Don't you wanna see more elves or even Arthas? Let's do it. To arms!

Shame on them for not being able to recognize a decent movie. Just because these actors are not household names? Is it that we've become so accustomed to everything be a reboot, repeat, re-imaging of the same tired crap that we can't appreciate something new? There was a time when Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher weren't household names, and they appeared in a film that was relatively panned by critics. Critics in the same vain as the ones who squeed about The Force Awakens, a film not fit to hold Warcraft's jock. This film is not badly acted, and its story, while not particularly deep, is by no means simplistic.

Yes, the film is probably easier to follow if you know the characters, but I don't think that is at all necessary. Just because Lord of the Rings had been in print for 5 decades doesn't mean the majority of the filmgoers knew anything about the very complicated lore, and I remember talking to many a people who started reading the books just to understand fully what they'd witnessed in Fellowship of the Ring, so for those saying, this is no Lord of the Rings, it is a lot closer than many professional critics are giving it credit for.

My advice, see the movie. It is honest to god better than another flipping super hero movie.

Maybe less appealing if you aren't keen on how cool it is to finally see characters like Gul'dan, Durotan and Medivh on the big screen finally. Aside from that, it is graphically astonishing. The environments, horizons, the orcs, the arcane and fel energies.

I was afraid of them tapping into the origin stories of warcraft as I felt it would be a difficult thing to untangle. There are SO many characters in this that are essentially the origins of the bloodlines of characters that we come to know and love in Warcraft III(2003) and World of Warcraft(2004-Present). They manage to handle Durotan, Ogrim, Gul'dan, Lothar, Llane, Khadgar, Medivh, Garona, and more, all stories told with appropriate allotment in my book.

As someone who is a complete stickler, they only gripe I can muster to find is that they didn't namedrop two certain orcs, the nightelfs weren't purple enough, and there was not much representation of any of the cool beasts/enemies from the games.

They actually somehow did it, and I can't wait to see the main characters in the next movie (Hint: It's probably gonna involve the mains from Warcraft III).

It does bring excellence with it's visual effects and epic fight sequences, but nothing else. Fans of the video game franchise will be pumped for this film; regular guys like me will simply call it mediocre and nothing above that.

Don't believe the critics on this one, they really don't seem to have any idea what they're talking about.

Appearance:

Somehow Bliz got the right balance of practical props and CG to make everything looking believable, but on top of that the sound and choreography is on POINT. Slightly smaller and only marginally less pissed off than the hulk, Fel Orcs absolutely crush the poor human bastards in ways that just can't really be expressed with practical choreography.
Emotions and expressions are "accurate", movement is natural. Orcs really come alive.

Beautiful vistas of game locations re-imagined are briefly visited (Stormwind a few times) but always a treat.

The only complaint is that Garona looks only slightly too human. If you're a lore buff, she was considered half human up until later down the line (Burning crusade) and depictions in warcraft do have her looking pretty much like a green-skinned woman. But in some scenes she did end up looking like a slightly tall woman with an odd skin complexion.

Sound:

The resounding impact of a hammer constructed of a rod the thickness of your arm with a stone the size of an infant into an unfortunate guardsman's chest isn't gruesome and certainly not weak but oddly satisfying to have what you hear match up with what you see.
That said, most battles are pretty one sided aside from our plot armored heroes, but frankly it makes good sense.

Music is vaguely warcraft-ish. I certainly can't recall anything I would listen to regularly like some of the lord of the rings or max max fury road soundtracks. But it seems to be a nice compliment.

Plot and writing:

There are a few moments of levity sprinkled throughout though likewise there's nothing too hammy and only one particularly awkward moment or two I can recall. A couple moments worth a laugh though I wonder how much people who aren't fans of the series might enjoy them.

The heroes enjoy a pretty significant degree of plot armor for the most part, effortlessly slaying massive brutes who are effortlessly slaying their fellows. At least for the mages it makes sense.
Things turn around a little bit later and the battle becomes a little more balanced, which does make things a bit more believable. After all, the humans have never dealt with more or less green viking gorrilas from outer space. They adapt and improve at the very end, which leads well into a presumable sequel for warcraft II.

There are a few deviations from the lore, but nothing too grievous. After all, warcraft was an RTS first before anything else. We've had layers upon layers of story added on in recent years, but it's become pretty cluttered. A little retcon wouldn't hurt.

My only complaint was that the pacing seemed a bit off. Lots of travel to show off beautiful vistas or recreations of ingame locations followed by some exposition followed by another vista, followed by exposition, etc. Some places we hardly got to enjoy for a few minutes (ironforge) while others we only got a glimpse at (Redridge mountains) and then others still got several visits (Stormwind, Medivh's tower)

OVERALL:

I highly recommend seeing this movie if you are a warcraft or WoW fan. Even if you aren't, its a pretty solid fantasy flick. Probably nothing too particularly memorable, but it is one of the better videogame to movie adaptations.

The movie isn't anything brilliant but it was not supposed to be anyway, it is what it needed to be.

It starts with a great scene with the orcs and development of one of the main characters, but when the opening ends, the title scene apears and they begin presenting the human part if the movie, they do it in a hurry and it might be confusing for some people.

The plot line is simple what is good, because the first Warcraft game plot was simple either. but the movie sometimes fail in make care about some of the characters and it comes to a scene where yo should care about one of them ding and you just don't,

The good things about the movie are:
great fights, the cg in the orcs and the overall looking of the world are really impressive, great fan service (I am a fan and want my service) and the way magic is natural and well represented is just awesome.

With all that said, no it isn't the new Lord of the Rings but it shouldn't be it a fun and convincent HIGH fantasy world with some great and some bad characters, plot lost itself sometimes but is nothing terrible. It is a great movie if you like fantasy and good action movies a solid 8 is rather correct.

If you aren't a player of the Warcraft games you really have no business reviewing this movie, don't let these "critics" fool you. If you have at least some basic knowledge of the Warcraft story you will love it :)

Movie was made for the fans, and I as a fan, loved it. Yes it was not perfect but it sure was better then anything that came out this year.

I mean they rated: Warcraft, BvS, X-Man... etc etc at 3-4; but they rated some random movies that I, nor any1 else will ever mention at high 7-8 . . . ye right
