This movie is well worth your time and money. Fantastic visuals and music that adds to the atmosphere result in an immersive experience. The CGI was really well done, and provided almost an emotional connection with the orcs. The story is rather confusing, especially if you don't know the basic lore of the universe, but it's nothing that complex, and it's supposedly because of a forty minute to one hour cut that was made. That doesn't excuse it, but rather makes me interested in a director's cut with all of that left intact. It's not Lord of the Rings worthy, or a film you have to see irrespective of genre, but if you're a fan of the genre, the film is well worth your money. Expand

I'm glad I didn't listen to the critics. Brought the world and characters to life with a good mix of humour and pathos. Some nice little touches that brought a smile to this fan of the series.

Although it may not cater to all, my suggestion is to watch this movie for yourself. Many may have the same question, "do you need to have played the games to enjoy the movie in its entirety?” The answer is no. If you have an open mind and wish you escape into a seemingly well-crafted fiction universe that promises a great story and fast paced action, then Warcraft will deliver. I myself personally loved it. The creators deserve much praise for their achievement in this well executed movie. As stated by Jones (Director) himself, CGI can be done well or done **** characterising good CGI as that which is forgotten by the viewer. I must say that he has successfully delivered on the promise good CGI brings. Overall, a fantastic movie enjoyable by all! Expand

I actually think critics hit the negative button at the first sign of a video game movie. And they did jump on this one in record time. Makes you wonder if they merely made stupid assumptions based on the genre of this movie alone or have some personal vendetta against video games.

It's evident that the focus here was to create movie based on the Warcraft universe for the fans of the series. That being said, I saw this with fans and non fans alike, and everyone enjoyed it whether they knew backstory or not. Blizzard has done a great job bringing their Warcraft series to life on the big screen and has not to cashed in on the popular name like other video game movie titles, well worth the watch!

This is exactly the movie that I was hoping blizzard would make and it is worth a watch whether you're a fan of Warcraft or not, despite what most critics write.

TheAn easy contender for worst movie of the year. As a huge Warcraft fan who has clocked in over 25 years of play going back to the original Warcraft, I have to question why anyone felt this was a story worth telling on the big screen. The writing and acting on part of the human characters is poor, leaving the mostly CGI orcs to be the most convincing part of the movie. The editing and pacing was distracting. This movie is proof that if you try to cram a LOTR-scale plot into two hours, the experience suffers. A strong warning to anyone who is unfamiliar with the world, setting and characters, you may feel overwhelmed and have no idea what's going on. This was hard to watch. Expand

I was engaged the whole way through and it was a movie that made you think as well as question. They introduced the Orcs really well and established the humans as very civil even in times of pressure. This movie was well made and the story was easy to follow and it definitely deserves a sequel. Imagine the introduction of the paladins, undead or even the night elf's in this world they have established. I have no idea what these critics are on but their opinions should not undermine the potential this movie has. only downside for me was that some of the characters were not as developed as they could have been regardless great movie. it was like reading a book's summary and that summary taking like 2h, and I felt like they atleast removed 45m of the footage! it was just like a single page of the books, so short and not many plot stuff. but If they didn't do this only the people who played the game would have liked it!!!!

they had no other choice, they made a lot of stupid mistakes like the cliches, and the lothar's son was basically useless :D

but this is more like a pre-sequal or something, I can feel that the next ones will be amazing!

still so much difference then the game's plot! but good!!!

Warcraft: The Beginning is by no means a perfect movie. Most of its characters are one-dimensional and there is nothing complex or new about the plot.

However, Warcraft is in my mind easily the best movie adaptation of a game so far. It is a gift to the millions of players who have played the games and a good introduction to those who were not familiar with the rich world of Warcraft.

The purpose of this movie is in the title: to build the foundation for a movie franchise based on one of the most detailed and rich fictional worlds ever created. I am happy to inform you that it succeeds in doing this. I am excited to see where this takes us - as a fan of the games, I can assure you that there are far better stories to be told than this one. I am glad they started from the beginning.

First off, please do not let the critics spoil this movie for you. It is not a horrible movie, if anything it’s a good movie, not great but good. For me it was great.

So I’m going to cut the chase and keep this simple

What’s good:
• CGI, the CGI is jaw dropping, the expressions they were able to convey on the orcs faces was just amazing. You can actually see and feel what the orc characters were feeling though there body language and facial expressions. They spent a lot of time putting in all those extra details.

• Action, the action was right on the money. The crunching of the orcs attacks on the humans was morbidly satisfying. Every action and attack looked and felt real, not like a crappy choreographed movie.

• Magic, the magic in this movie was truly powerful. The problem with a lot of fantasy movies in the past (yes even the great lord of the rings, which I love) is that they were too scared or shy to show off magic abilities for characters. Most studios fear it will put off some viewers because of the cheese factor of fantasy. But man Warcraft does not give a rats @$$ about that. They do magic full on and they do it well. The mages are the most powerful characters in this movie, and it makes sense, they were almost superhero like, which felt right in context to the story.

What’s OK:
• Story, ok the story was good, what brings it down is yes they do travel to a lot of places and name drop a lot of characters and places that you will probably not know anything about. The basic structure of the story is good, it’s simply and its heroic like a fantasy should be. It’s actually not that hard to keep up with the story once it starts going. Orcs world is dying; Orcs must leave this world to find a new home. Orcs arrive on human world, fight humans to claim land. Some Orcs feel there leader is wrong and their only chance to live is to work it out with human. Humans hate orcs because of the destruction they caused. And that’s pretty much the story at its base. It’s not that complicated. But of course within the story it adds a lot more. There are good moments of character development, but sadly because the movie was cut to 2 hours instead of the full 2 hours and 45 min, we don’t get to spend a lot of time with each character.

What’s BAD:
You know as I’m writing this and I got to this part of the review, I simply cannot find anything that’s bad. I mean some things were not great, but that’s what I explained above, most of this movie ranges from Good to ok to great. Which is why this movie if you look on rottentomatoes, metacritic and IMDB, it averages a B (80%). It really is just a good movie.

So go out there and watch this movie, you will have a good time, it’s not horrible, and it’s not mediocre. The movie is unique and fun enough for the general audience in my opinion. No need to be a warcraft fan to enjoy this.

Don't believe the critics, they are extremely harsh for little to no reason. Almost as if they were expecting an oscar winning tale about orcs migrating to a new land after loosing their homes...

Its a movie made for the fans that explains just enough for people who don't know much about the game to understand what's happening. Packed with action, and characters that are willing to go to extremes to protect whats theirs. A labor of love and a gift to the fans. The animation is top notch and amazing, you can really feel the weight of the powerful orcs as the charge forward.

Again, ignore the critics who are just hating on it because it's movie based on a high fantasy game.

The CGI was well done just like Blizzard's famous game trailers. The action was also well done, considering human actors were battling CGI orcs (though the humans often became CGI after putting their greathelms on). The environments were stunning. The overhead shots of great capital cities like Stormwind and the floating city of Dalaran were impressively detailed. The magicians' spells looked much better than Gandolf the Grey. The wolves, horses, and gryphons also looked spectacular. Overall, the movie was visually epic.

The plot hewed closely to the original Warcraft video game's plot--which was a good thing, IMO. Due to the 2 hour time constraint, the movie moved at a dizzying speed and tried to cram in as much as possible. In the trade off between remaining authentic to the source material and cutting things to make the movie more watchable, Duncan Jones chose the former. And thank God he did. Fanboys of the world rejoice.

A lot of casual references were made to Azeroth's characters and lore that required intimate knowledge of the game. When characters casually referenced the Redridge Mountains, Goldshire, Blackrock Mountain, Deadwind Pass, etc., I possessed a detailed knowledge of exactly what they were talking about (having ventured there many times myself), whereas casual babbies prob got confused. Same thing with all the names--Gul'dan, Medivh, Lothar--you get the picture. Same thing even with the jokes. Example--murlocs were considered a humorous enemy in World of Warcraft that made a distinctive gargling sound when attacked--the exact same audio recordings were used in the movie, which caused me to Løl Wüt.

Some parts of the movie were predictable and uninteresting. A certain character died midway through. This elicited zero emotional response from me. I gathered early on that the only reason for that particular character's existence was to be slain to add emotional oomph to the movie. Judging from the music, the movie makers intended that scene to be quite dramatic. It failed entirely. But overall I was on the edge of my seat throughout.

I loved the atmosphere at the theater--fanboys shouted "For the Horde!" at various intervals, and I of course responded with cries of "For the Alliance!" I definitely recommend seeing this one in IMAX 3D. It's the only way to do such a fantastic film justice.

Surprisingly it's a good video-game movie, I give it an high score based on that statement.
When you watch a motion picture you need to adapt your critical sense based on the "type" of movie you are going to watch: You'll use a different yardstick to measure an martial arts movie rather than a biographical drama or a Slapstick comedy. So if you watch Warcraft with an objective eyes (without being fogged by prejudice or having unrealistic blizzard fanboy expectation ) comparing It with other film of the same genre you'll find a solid electronic game adaptation: a cut above other movie like "Dead or Alive" or "Hitman" or "In the Name of the King" or " Max Payne" for example.
I played Warcraft 2 and 3 ages ago and for some months WOW back in the days and I find in this adaptation what I was looking for: ......for once we can watch a live-action film based on a videogame that isn't a 2 hours advertisement for it's developers (Blizzard in this case) nor something that has only limited connection with it's original source.....
Like other have already stated it isn't perfect if you compare It with other fantasy movie (like LOTR for example) but again it is a little silly to do so.
It is far better than the critics would have you think.
I recommend it with the sole advise that if you are not familiar with Warcraft background It is better to read a little on the internet about It even if you have readed a lot of fantasy novel ... just to to avoid an initial disorientation in some of the first dialogues

I can understand critics. They are lost in the world created for gamers which tastes better if you have that background. But this is not a bad movie. It is not good either.

There’s a big mix of perfectly made orcs and very plastic looking humans; of powerful magic and colorful tricks and I know, I know - it is a video game adaptation. But it is also a movie. And not a very good one.

My main concern in this chaos of war is not the plot which seems pretty simple and understandable and explained very well in the movie; it leaves some place for imagination though and that’s good because we do not need more boring scenes. The main concern are the acting, details and effects that make this movie a bad mix of triple-A production and a B class picture. You can see these plastic looking armors and swords, these rubber hauberks along with perfectly modeled orcs and their mimics. A great looking scenery along with bad lighting which makes the CGI very noticeable. And the actors performance? There’s little to none. A dull looking, few actors that are introduced are uninteresting in their play with the exception of Travis Fimmel who is doing his best to show some feelings. But there’s no time, this is war and funny looking guards have to die, a king has to make a forgettable speech and the rest of cast just have to vanish in the sea of computer generated effects and cheap love story.

But it is also fun. It is good that they have found some room for a murlock and a polymorph. It was good to see those familiar places and names. It was pretty damn good to see the warband in all it’s glory. But there’s more to show and I hope they will add some more details to the characters next time. It’s sad when digitally generated heroes are better that the real ones (or maybe they were supported by better actors?). And they could make some better costumes too. It is still a movie.

There’s still much to do in this very fresh movie universe. And I hope for the best. FOR THE HORDE!

If there's something you have to ignore, it's definitely not this movie, but rather the Critic's Metacritic score, the column on the left and most of the critic reviews.
The latter somewhat affects the viewers' subconscious;
"Oh, it's your typical human warrior character. Can't they think of something interesting?"
"Hmm, they did go for it and gave those barbaric-looking creatures a contrasting side in their personality - such as cheesy idea."
"Meh, they're tried hard to make that character relatable, it's disgusting. He/She now annoys me every time he/she is onscreen."
"The 3D sceneries look too beautiful making it look fake!"
"Blah blah blah."

I'm not saying this movie has lots of cliches. It's just that that kind of critic mindset makes an idea annoying for a viewers' mind when it could've been welcoming prior to finding out about the critics' opinions. Making movie goers look for something that isn't what the movie is giving them.
I mean, why can't something in movies be what it is instead of something that hasn't been done before?

My parents watched it with us, knowing nothing about the game. And when the film was finished, we all had smiles in our faces because of how surprisingly enjoyable the movie was. The pacing was fast enough and the events that unfold are intriguing. It's probably the only movie so far that gave me a reason to temporarily avert my attention to something else.

We all eagerly wait for the sequel!

My only gripes about the film is that there are stuff I wished that lasted longer/carried over to the next film and it's disappointing that it won't be so. There was a cringe-y moment for me but thankfully, it was forgettable.

Oh, and also avoid those "Warcraft fans" that has a very different definition of "loose adaptation" in mind, complaining why the lore barely resembles that in the game, etc.

To cut things short, this movie is highly entertaining and is worth your money ask your friends and family to give it a go!

It is reported that this movie is from a popular game and I have not played the game before. Before buying tickets, I saw the preview and attracted by its actions and scene. After watching, I feel the story din not finished. Although the dark gate was not opened, the ultimate war didn't begin. Is there part two? To be honest, the plot is too simple and didn't give me a deep impression. Maybe I should choose a comedy movie next time.

So, when the movie faithfully recreated the world of Azeroth, down to the near pixel perfect duplicates of the Footmen from the games, I was pleased, and first of all, I noticed. So, full credit there. The battles were good, faithful to the game, all that was missing was the hud, and cooldown timers. Having said that, the rest of the movie was unimpressive, in the way that the first film of a series often is. It introduces characters and gives a rough background. So, go see it, once, for no more than US$9 or local equivalent and if you can't avoid saying "ready to work," or "zug zug," you probably won't be sad. To the professional critics I ask, "what you want?" Expand

I am not a gamer, not of that kind of games. The game is based of Warcraft: orcs and humans, the first RTS expansion to what became now the MMO World of Warcraft.
I did not know anything about the game or their characters, yet I enjoyed this movie immensely. The motivations of the characters are clear.
In one end, you have the Orc race, escaping a world that was dying because their leader Gul'dan, was syphoning all life out of it, through a portal, and into the world of Azeroth. On the other hand, you have the Humans, with their king, Vrynn, and commander, Lothar, who feel threatened by this new arrival, and more so by the arrival of the fel, which is the source of Gul'dan's powers.
The CGI is done by the best CGI studio in the market, and they succeed into making this blend of human motion capture and CGI work be more realistic than Avatar ever was.

After a bit of research about the game and their extensively generous database of wikis, I could see how some of the major plot was kept, with some insignificant modifications to the storyline, to make this work.

I can now consider myself a newbie to the game World of Warcraft, thanks to that movie, as I bought the game and it's expansion to experience the MMO world for myself, and so far, I've been fairly pleased with what I saw.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So a lot of the people reviewing the movie on here state quickly that they are fans of the property and I think they are missing the biggest flaw in the film. As someone who has not played any Warcraft game I was lost throughout most of the film as it seemed to feel no need to explain itself. As for the characters in the film well I don't know if they are from the games or not but very little development is given to them and romantic plot lines seem to appear out of thin air. The CGI was god awful for such a big summer movie at too many points that at several moments I audibly scoffed at the film. It then confidently sets up sequels all throughout the ending while you yawn as CG creatures beat each other up and Shrek Moses washes down a stream. I'll say it again though I don't care if this movie was made for the fans because the fans will have a hard time showing this movie to anyone else to get them intrigued in this series. I've seen better **** looking at the paper after I wipe Expand

The action scenes were brutal, the visuals were stunning and I even really liked the costumes and the set pieces yes they do look a little "cartoonish" but that's how the game looks! It's the perfect take on Warcraft the game and it leaves me wanting more. I want a sequel. I came into this movie expecting the worse, due to the critic reviews. I also came into Star Wars with low expectations despite critic reviews.
It would appear that user reviews are actually far more reliable.

While I am familiar with the lore, I don't play the game.
The movie's setting is as complete as it can be without overwhelming the audience with names of kingdoms, characters, races, which is an impressive feat, I did not think it would achieve.

If you are a hardcore fan, you might be disappointed in the lack of detail on the kingdoms/dranei/etc, but it makes it much more accessible to the general audience.

The original lore is much more intricate and complicated, and it does a great job of giving a simplified adaptation, which means it’s also a little bit far from the original lore, but it does it fairly well.

There are a lot of elements that are not fully explained, which from what I've read caused great anger from critics, who seem to have wanted to be spoon-fed every explanation.
That being said, while the movie is definitely internally-consistent, some of the missing details can cause confusion. It is like trying to collapse half a season of game of thrones into 2 hours.

This makes it feel a bit rushed, but that's not on the actors or the direction, rather on how much they tried to squeeze in, making the writing a very difficult task.
Because of this, they lost a lot on character development and we don't get to relate much to Durotan or the Orc culture.

The settings and art are beautifully done, the acting is adequate though limited by the fact that they couldn't develop that many characters concurrently.
The adaptation is impressive, albeit not loyal to the lore. It is worth noting that Warcraft lore is more of a history than a narrative.

Critics never really gave the movie a chance, and if you read the reviews, you can tell how they never tried to understand it.

Give it a chance, most questions you might have might at the end will be answered in the sequels

If I have to read another review of Warcraft that complains that Lothar isn't Aragorn enough and Medivh isn't old enough to be Gandalf, then I'm going to tear my hair out. I enjoyed this film quite a bit and am very disappointed in mainstream critics who should have been giving mediocre at worst reviews, who instead are giving terrible reviews to a movie with a) a fairly complex plot, b) engaging characters with motivations, c) a nuanced look at a conflict that isn't just "good guys vs. bad guys", which often is split down racial or species lines.

This is not the best film around. In fact, it's likely a 7 out of 10. But the critics are so wrong in this case, I feel that the positive user reviews are warranted.

What in the hell is with critics these days? This movie is not perfect as it feels rushed which leads to less character development than I would have liked considering how much emphasis is based on the quickly established relationships. With that said, it was worlds better than the reviews people are slamming it with. It is CGI heavy, but incredibly well done CGI ( and remember movies like Lord of the Rings, Starwars, Star Trek, every Marvel/DC film, Jurassic Park, etc. are also heavy CGI films).

The action is fantastic, fight scenes are well done, the magic is neat though it feels a bit rushed, the acting is solid for the most part though a few characters felt flat. Go watch the movie if you at all like fantasy.

On the critics: After seeing some of these terrible reviews I started to wonder how bad they rated some of the other movies I liked. My conclusion, many critics simply shouldn't review fantasy or horror genres because they don't like them. So many of the movies in those genres I have loved have been hacked to bits by the same critics that have raved about movies I have disliked immensely.

The lore was right on and it gives its own ideas to how something happened non lore wise. I have no idea why people hated on this film ya the start of the story for Warcraft wasn't amazing but its just building up to even better stuff. This is easily one of the best CGI movies I have seen and seeing all the hidden gems within the movie made it that much better. I was gonna make this a 6 or 7 but I really want to see another movie from them because I felt this movie did justice with the lore of Warcraft just because we have 12-15 y/o down rating this because they didn't grow up with the lore and feel WOW has a bad lore then they can say that to the community of a game thats still the MOST PLAYED MMO in the world.

Also if you have no Warcraft lore this movie is still worth seeing just try to remember peoples names within the movie and Wiki them to learn more about them. I think the only downside of this movie is there is so many characters that they tried to squeeze in and it felt rushed in some cases because of it but it still stayed with the story line/lore. Please check this movie out if you love fantasy stuff.

Just finished watching Warcraft, came home to review. In short: believing movie critics on this one is akin to believing a vegetarian's review of an all you can eat meat buffet. If you were the target audience of Warcraft, then you will absolutely love the movie and that I will guarantee.

This movie, in case you were unaware, is set during the time of Warcraft 1. The original. The movie does not even make it to the events of Warcraft 2. So for all you WoW powerhouses with no knowledge of the preceding RTS lore, don't blame the movie for not being what you were perhaps expecting.

Is that how scores work these days? Are they bought and paid for? I've never played any Warcraft games or any Blizzard games for that matter. I am judging this movie on just the movie. I was left wanting more. The story did a wonderful job setting up the franchise. The only problem I had with the movie was the bad acting from the half orc half human girl... In her defense it must be tough to act with bottom fangs. Ragnar was great in the movie.... Look I'm no critic and I can't tell you why I liked this movie... but I just did... I hope the poor reviews don't keep a sequel from being made... PLEASE GO OUT AND SEE THIS MOVIE AND BUY IT ON DVD OR DOWNLOAD WHEN IT COMES OUT. I'll never trust a professional critic ever again after their reviews of this movie. I thought the little orc baby the short time he was in the movie was adorable. Expand

It felt like it sometimes it would cut to random shots for 10 seconds for no reasons, and then cut back, and it didn't show important scenes as much as it should have. If you've played Warcraft, it's a must see, but if you're not a fan of the games, I think it'll still be a fun watch, especially with a few friends! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost, this movie is 100% fan-service.
It's enjoyable apart from that, but ultimately it's going to be hard for people unfamiliar with the source material to follow.
They did a really great job of setting up the plot and introducing the pivotal characters to the story in a very quick and efficient way as well as developing them in such a way that you legitimately begin to feel for them and the struggles they encounter.
It's also worth mentioning, this movie is not "World of Warcraft". It's "Warcraft" as in the PC game from years ago.
The plot was conveyed very well, the locations are iconic and very easily recognizable and the ultimate easter egg was right near the beginning Lotrhan is riding through the woods to Goldshire and there's a lone murloc in the foreground that lets out that iconic gurgle from WoW.
Even if you're not a fan, as I mentioned, it's an enjoyable movie, the fight scenes are incredible, the characters are well-written, and the sense of panic from both sides is very real.
I gave it a 9/10 just for the fact that in the 2.5 hour run-time, they could have done a bit more to explain some of the plot for people that are new to the series.

I'm usually a very rigid critic, especially of movies, but I do not see where the "professional" critics saw this as even close to below a 4.

This is a solid 6/10 in my opinion, and I wouldn't say that anything took me out of the movie at all. I have never been a big warcraft fan despite appreciating the license to a degree, and yet this was entertaining to a point, despite never being a really good movie, it did a good job overall.

Let's break down the good and the bad:

For the good, it looks good. The 3D effects on the Orcs look superb. The visuals in general did a fantastic job at conveying high fantasy without abusing it(ie it has something else to show than "awesome things" and does the simple and more down-to-earth like armors and costumes pretty well).
The sounds didn't leave a lasting impression on me but it was competent, like almost everything in the movie. Plot and actors were well-built despite being a bit on the weak side(will explain in the "bad" part of the review).

For the meh, some moments were a bit poorly done. I'm still not sure what the relationship between Doomhammer and Durotan was supposed to be. Are they friends, members of the same clan, two chieftains? Garona's fake plastic teeth always put a grin on my face, the bad grin of "oh dear this looks so dumb". And there were a few scenes that fell sort of flat. At one point Medivh(who's not in his normal state then, but it still comes off as wierd) says to King Llane "I am the Guardian Sire, I am here to help". And going "I am this role, this is what I do" in such a blatant way, even if it was to illustrate that Medivh wasn't in his normal state, still always sounds so poor.

For the bad, by far the worst problem to me was the amount of places and locations they wanted to illustrate too quickly. For the first half of the movie, we get to see Draenor, the Dark Portal, Stormwind, some fort near the Orcish position, the Kirin Tor, Medivh's Tower, and one or two others, and let's be clear: that was way too much too quickly. I remember the shot of the camera rising above the forest to show Dalaran(city of the Kirin Tor) and thinking "why are you taking us to a new place? We've already seen so many". Ironforge is in this movie, for less than two minutes. Why? To introduce that dwarves exist? It's fact of Warcraft lore that dwarves and elves have an extremely minor role, to not say no role at all, in the original Warcraft game, which is what this movie portrays.

The scenario in this movie and in the original game are both about humans, orcs, and Medivh's actions, along with Khadgar, Garona, and the captain in this movie. The addition of the Orcs is a great idea, but they don't help the problem. The movie just jumps around too much spending time to show locations instead of focusing on the characters, at least on its first half, the second half being more of a long conclusion to the situation.

And that's when the real bad shows up: the characters are really weak. Medivh is cool, has a lot of neat scenes, but fails to be as good as can be due to time constraints. Khadgar could've been the courageous and upstanding nerd who saved the day, the captain and King Llane could've been more, but they all came off as weak. The actors aren't fantastic either, but I don't mind it as much as I mind the lack of time given to them. So many scenes spent showing us places that have no importance to the plot like Stormwind or Ironforge should've been spent on them. The orcs' story is interestingly better because it's more focused on the characters and thus they come off much stronger than their human counterparts.

Had this movie been more focused and tried to pander to the fans less with its tourist-trap side, I think it could have been a solid 8, despite having only decent-to-good actors and being based on the plot of a very early strategy game that honestly isn't all that fantastic in the first place. It's shame, but by no means does it make this movie bad. It's competent, it did most things well enough, it was fun and it has a feel of amateurishness that gives it a flavor of goodwill rather than the tasteless brand of industrial, preprocessed movies hollywood puts out every year.

ThisRegarding visual presentation: This film is worth watching solely on the strength of its visual effects. The motion capture for the orcs is amazing, and the magic effects are the best representation I've seen on screen in any film, ever. This is also one of the first films I've seen since Avatar where the 3D conversion actually added something to the presentation, rather than detracting.

Regarding the plot: Do you remember when Inception came out, and many critics reported that it was a confusing movie that required multiple viewings to make sense of it? And then do you remember watching it, and thinking those critics were out to lunch? The same is true of Warcraft. Coming into the film as a non-fan, the film has a pretty straightforward plot, and anything that's left unexplained isn't really necessary for understanding that plot. You'd have to be pretty dim to not be able to figure out what's going on.

The potential impact of this film was obvious, gamers who are hungry for high quality film adaptations of their favorite games, are still waiting for a film to prove that it can be done. Warcraft is cliched, poorly written, and not as entertaining or deep as it could and therefore should have been. I don’t want people thinking I hated this movie, because it did some things well and plenty of people have said they enjoyed it, I simply didn’t.
The most painful thing about the movie was that it had a lot of good aspects, but as a whole the film felt a little weak. One major problem I had with this film was that it reminded me too much of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Regardless of the agitation that statement will incur out of die hard fans, one prime example is the main antagonist of the film, the orcs, ride around on giant evil looking wolves, just like in Lord of the Rings. Above that the film as a whole looked too digitized, where in certain scenes, everything in the scene looked digitally created.
The movie was directed by the immensely talented Duncan Jones, and to be honest the world he creates, is very intriguing. However, the script was a major weakness of this film, because inside this film is a cool story worth telling but it was overcrowded with weak characters and muddled storytelling. The film leaps around so much, trying very hard to tell a dense story, that it becomes very hard to follow, and almost impossible to care about any characters. From a technical standpoint it jumps around so much, that at times the film disregards explanation.
The weak story, and rushed pacing make the film feel overcrowded, and hard to really enjoy. While some of the characters had very cool development, many of them flash through for momentary exposition and then disappear for 20 minutes. The orc villain is admittedly cool to look at, albeit a little one dimensional, but the overall evil force in the film is essentially an unexplained force. The film really never feels like it entertains or challenges like Jones’ other films (Moon and The Source Code), it just trudges forward.
It isn’t a terrible film, and I’m guessing many will enjoy this film, if for no other reason than that it is a good 2 hour escape from reality. That being said for those who are looking for a entertaining, witty, original film this just isn’t really that, as it never allows itself to delve deeply into any scene. The film features a great amount of potential, which only serves to make the muddled end result even more depressing, as the film clearly could have been better. All-in-all I think kids will like this film, but for those who want a great film, this just isn’t quite that.

Granted, for a big budget action flick it may be challenging to see an universe where the ever so stereotypical portrayed orcs are not as clearly evil and the humans are not as good as you thought they'd be. But even if you haven't any clue what Warcraft is about: go watch the movie. It much better than the critics want you to believe it is.

These minor nit picks however, do not subtract from the movie as a whole, the CGI was spot on, the soundtrack was glorious and it just felt like Warcraft, I can't wait to see the director's cut and all the story they cut for theatrical release, which is what really stopped this movie from being even better. I hope they are able to continue the story in this universe and learn from what few mistakes they made moving forward. Expand

Don't listen to the critics. I mean, who listens to the critics anyways? Most critics consistently give the vast majority of movies a **** snobby review. Seriously, we need some new critics if almost unanimously the critics have a different opinion than the public viewpoints that they are supposed to represent.

Duncan Jones attempts to weave an impressive spell, but the conjugation's complexity sometimes gets the better of him.

Movies based on video games don't have a great track record. Most are terrible, a few slip into entertaning, very few rise to the level of "good," none are "great." Budding director Duncan Jones apparently saw that mountain and said, "I'mma climb dat!" With dedication, focus, and heart he and his production team nearly reach the summit.

Based upon 1994's Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft drops us directly and unapologeticly into the Orc invasion of Azeroth. Lead by the clearly evil and power-hungry sociopath Gul'Dan and his appointed Warchief Blackhand a large Orc warband travels to Azeroth to establish a foothold and open a larger and more stable portal so that their entire race may escape the dying world of Dreanor. The humans on the other side of that portal don't take kindly to being murdered by aliens or used for Fel fuel, and initiate an immediate military response.

The plot is simple enough to follow, and that's perfect for a fantasy setting that many will be engaging with for the first time. Where the stumbles happen is with the characters that actually have to carry the plot.

Nearly everything on the Orc side is amazing. Visually its the best use of CGI in the history of cinema, sometimes you can get lost enough to forget its CG. The tense personal and political struggles of Durotan and Draka feels really grounded and tense. Durotan doesn't agree with violently conquering an new world and he clearly has issues with Gul'dan's unabashed evil and lack of any scruples. However if he doesn't toe the line then he, his family, and his entire clan are going to be slaughtered. The constant political dance, small tender family moments, and hidden machinations and maneuvers are strong elements and very good cinema. If the whole movie was as strong as these scenes then I suspect the critics would have been much kinder.

The human side is, unfortunately, much more meandering. While on the Orc side you have only 6 key orcs (Durotan, Draka, Ogrim, Garona, Gul'dan, Blackhand) to pay attention to there are nearly a dozen humans that vie for attention and screen time. Unfortunately this reduces many of the humans to mere plot devices, as if every scene that was supposed to make us care got cut down to only the bare motivations. The young wizard Khadgar is a delight on screen singularly encapsulating both the serious and irreverent side of the Warcraft universe. Medivh, the older and much more powerful Wizard, is clearly gripping with a mental illness and struggling to hold himself together and it can be an uncomfortable duality. Lothar is a passable warrior, but aside from some brief shining moments, an unfortunately dull character. Garona was a strong female character and usually delightful on screen, however when she spoke in halting broken English after first meeting the humans it felt really offputting (yes your foreign we got that with the green skin and the tusks, stop hurting my ears!) That's not to mention the other characters that just glide in and out of the film.

The pacing of the film suffers from both its run time and its breadth. In an effort to keep the story moving many characters don't get a chance to breath and show us why we should attach to them. Paradoxically, the need for world building and squeal fuel lead to some otherwise unnecessary sequences. There were many scenes that could have been stripped out or paired down. The small section in Ironforge at the beginning, and the whole scene at Dalaran were pure fan service that really contributed nothing storywise. In fact at Dalaran Khadgar gets advised: What are you doing here?! You know what to do already. (Also: Alodi, because apparently there isn't enough esoteric lore in this movie).

The battle scenes were few, but great. Most importantly everything that was going on was clear. I was ready to knock the cosplay design of the human armor, but goddamnit it works so well to keep the battles easy to read.

So, why the high score? Simple, most of the problems amount to quibbles. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and I can't help but think if Jones were given a longer runtime (3hrs.) he could have made the broad fantasy epic he was clearly aiming for, or if he was constrained more (90min) he would have cut out a lot and really focused on the core characters, playing to his strengths.

Will you like it?
If you're a fan of Warcraft: its a must see, just go and buy your ticket.
If you're a fan of high-fantasy: It will prove to be an enjoyable time. Although you may find yourself on Wowpedia looking things up, or bugging a friend that's already versed in Warcraft lore for some fleshing out.
If your not a fan of Warcraft or fantasy: Its going to be a crapshoot. If you can not worry about all the proper nouns and just take it in you may enjoy it without it being memorable. Otherwise you may wish to skip it.

This movie is an epic entry into this franchise and is largely based on the Warcraft books with small departures. Of course this is only a taste of what this franchise has to offer with 30 years of lore to run with and sets up a back ground for some epic events and characters to come. I went to see this film with both people who I played World of Warcraft with and people that knew nothing about the games or books and everyone in my group absolutely loved it. The critical reviews are harsh on this film and are not justified in my honest opinion. The only thing I felt could have been better was a stronger emotional build for some of the characters like Lothar's son. The film met my high expectations and I can't wait to watch it again. I look forward to more movies in this expansive universe. Expand

I had low expectations from this movie coming in but it surprised me in a lot of ways. I view this as test movie for blizzard to see if there is a market and I think there is. I think the movie delivered a good story. Was beautifully with good computer effects. They blended in and it really worked well in the movie.

The acting was okay. I'd say they differed in the performance but some where better and others worse but all in all they did the job.

The more I think about the movie the more I liked it. It was a bit fast paced but it was expected and I think coming movies will become even better. It was a good watch and I think 7 is a fair grading considering the special effects, acting, story and how pleased I felt after the movie.

There is room for improvement but this was not bad watch at all

Blizzard from the start was adamant that the movie remain true to their vision and lore, and as such they made a movie that should please even the most hardcore nerds, which is a truly epic accomplishment. Could they have cut out or altered significant parts of the lore to "speed things along" and make a better movie going experience, absolutely and I'm sure it would have received a slightly better critical review. However, nearly all video game movies get poor critical reviews as the common thinking is Comic movies - good, video game movies - bad. All that said, this movie does an excellent job of staying true to the original story (kind of a mix of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans with touches of Warcraft 3). Staying true to lore, pleasing fans, pleasing blizzard and making a movie that's watchable to non-fans is an incredibly difficult line to walk, and Duncan Jones made it happen. I look forward to seeing him take on the next one, which, with all the setup out of the way, should be significantly more fun to watch.

Additionally, and somewhat unrelated, I think the movie not being marketed as "The Beginning" in the US was a mistake. If you watch the movie as a stand-alone representation of Warcraft, you are going to think "Warcraft looks really really silly and doesn't make sense." But if you understand that this is a preamble to a significantly more interesting story (Warcraft 2 and the Lich King Saga) then you can see the awesome potential the series has.

TL;DR: Fans will get it, non-fans will struggle, the next one is going to be better.

This movie was so good, and was packed with fanservice in the form of location, lore pieces and references. The some times cheesy lines actually made it better, as that's how we know and love Warcraft.

TL;DR
Might not be something for non-fans, but pure nerd-porn for fans!

I have no idea what movie the 'professional critics' saw, but it clearly wasn't the same movie I saw. While not perfect, Warcraft was an enjoyable movie that had the right amount of fan service to not be obnoxious. Acting was mostly decent and good enough, CGI was mostly excellent (though panning scenary shots were blurry, as usual) and the few plot changes from the video games and books wasn't annoying. Overall, I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 8 - so I'm giving it an 8 on Metacritic to counterbalance the terrible reviews a bit. Expand
