After all, if you didn't like it you are.....wait for it.....r-r-r-r-racist! Yes, that old chestnut again. The folks who didn't enjoy it simply had a problem with the changes from the original, as well as the subpar CGI and the cringy songs (that Scuttle rap....ugghh!). Not to mention the virtue signaling, which is unfortunately ever-present in today's media.....and no, pointing that out doesn't make you racist! In short, stick to the original movie. Expand

Another live action remake that sullies the original to an unwatchable state.

Ariel no longer has her famous red hair, it is now a very dull orange. The actress playing her has an absolutely beatiful voice but again it is not Ariel because she looks like an iguana with eyes on different sides of her face. They made Halle change the iconic notes and melodies of the original songs so they sound very off and displeasing to the ears.

They have also removed many of the beloved original songs and replaced them with horrid "originals" that never should have made it past the discussion phase. After the atrocious gender changing of Scuttle they even went a step further and added one of the worst "raps" to ever be recorded that has nothing to do with the tone of the rest of the movie and every single person and child in the theater around me I could see had a grimace of contempt being forced to listen to it, so disrespectful to the original and it just would not end. Who thought The Little Mermaid needed a friggin' rap song? No one wanted or needed it and it completely takes you out of the movie. Several adults even walked out during it because of how terrible the entire scene was. No one I've spoken to about this remake of TLM has said a positive word about that entirely too long scene, so whoever gave that the go ahead needs to never be allowed to make discissions involving music in movies ever again.

The CGI and graphic effects don't look like they belong to a multi billion dollar company, they look out-sourced to a studio that gave the lowest bid. Everything is so dark and brooding looking when the original was bright and colourful.

Beloved characters like Flouder and Sebastian look like cheap mutant abominations that take away the magic from the original cartoon. This is a major part of why all of these remakes (besides Cinderella) have been horrible because they all have destroyed the magic of the originals because they take classic story paces away and add awful things in their place which not a single person enjoys and only hurts the good will hey have built up over the decades.

They even ruined Ursula and her eels because of the cheap CGI and atrocious make-up they gave to poor Melissa McCarthy. She is the ONLY person in the entire cast that actually seems like they want to be there and putting their best acting foot forward but unfortunately she cannot carry the entire movie since her appearance doesn't last long enough so we are left with the rest of the mediocre cast for far too long. I have never seen Javier Bardem look so bored and over a movie like he looks in this, like he just looks like he cannot wait to go home he just seems so bored.

They made Triton and Ursula related in this movie which was the only positive edition considering they took that out of the original TLM, however not a single character in this TLM look related at all. Melissa looks nothing like Javier, Halle looks nothing like either of them. Prince Eric doesn't even look like he's from the same part of the world as the rest of the cast let alone the actress playing his mother. I don't understand how you have an entire movie based around family drama where none of the characters even look remotely related at all. I genuinely do not understand how all of these horrid changes got greenlit unless it was done completely on purpose to drive up internet conversation about how they wholly destroyed another beloved classic in their catalogue. Someone once said "all attention is good attention" but this remake of TLM proves that it is absolutely not the case. They even had to ruin the ending to the original. Virtually none of the amazing aspects from the orginal still exist here outside of 'poor unfortunate souls' because of all the completely awful and unnessesary changes that were made for some inane reason.

The only surprise I found enjoyable was the 30 second cameo from Jodi Benson (original Ariel voice) but of course even though she's a stellar actress they couldn't even give her a decent part. It would've been so much better if she was cast as Eric's mother so you could at least pretend that Eric was actually RELATED to the person playing his mum.

I beg Disney to stop dancing on the corpse of my already dead childhood. These movies were the only thing as a severely bullied child that kept me going because they showed me everything would get better "you just have to get past the rough patches". All of these unnessesary remakes are retroactively runing the only solace I had as a child and I am so very disappointed that they continue to destroy everything they touch from cartoons to Star Wars to video games. Please stop ruining my childhood.

To be honest, I never watched the older one, it was the first time I was watching Little Mermaid. Even though I don't have the nostalgia, I loved more the movie than I thought I would. It's not perfect, like a new music for Eric - this song was embarrassing and inconsistent -, or the color correction, wich was too dark most of the time. It's not the best live action of Disney, but it's one of the bests. Expand

Jonah Hauer King is also very charming as the prince. Sebastian the crab is also very well realized and even though the design is a little bland, they fixed the facial expression issues from the Lion King remake. The underwater sequences look horrible sometimes but I think that is because we just saw Avatar The Way of Water and we have high expectations for underwater scenes now. The production above water like some of the action sequences are very high quality. The sequences with songs especially Under the Sea is a massive highlight; very vibrant and fun. The new songs are also very catchy. Alan Menken's score is also stunning, and there are key moments which gave me goosebumps especially towards the end. I think what works best is the chemistry between Bailey and King. The sequences in which they bond and fall in love is very romantic and I loved those scenes. This is my favorite live action remake from Disney and I am looking forward to seeing it again. Expand

This is a passable effort, but there's not all that much to write home about. Like pretty much all other ones of its kind, this live-action remake doesn't really justify its own existence. However, this also never breaches into the level of offensiveness as something like Guy Ritchie's "Aladdin" or Jon Favreau's "The Lion King." The performances from Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy are to be commended and I'm sure kids all over will get a kick out of at least a couple elements within. Beyond that, though, I'm just not sure what else I'm supposed to get out of this. It's not better than the original. The bits they added vary from forgettable to "man, I wish I could forget that," but there's still not enough new here to leave me with the impression that they were actually trying in their attempts to remake this. Again, not necessarily "bad" in any particular way, just middling, in my opinion. Expand

While the film is far from perfect, it makes a lot of fun and interesting changes to the source material. A few things of note are: Improving and expanding the character of Prince Eric, improving and expanding the dynamic between Triton and Ursula, improving and expanding the romance between Ariel and Eric, they removed Louis, the crazy chef guy. Yes, I consider this an improvement… Dude creeped me out as a kid, and they sort of “fixed” a plot hole with Ariel’s contract to Ursula.

With all of the positives out of the way, there were a few negatives about this film. It suffers from the same issues that most of these Disney live action adaptation films suffer from… It just sort of felt like a formality or something for Disney to mark off of a check list. I mentioned that they made some fun adjustments to the original source material, but at the same time, there is a lot of elements of the film that follow the original “beat for beat,” and some of the actors’ performances suffer from this. Javier Bardem (King Triton) felt like he was struggling to find something new to do with his role but just couldn’t seem to make it happen because he was restricted by having to do an almost word-for-word performance of the original character.

They are so creatively bankrupt that they can't even STEAL their old content effectively. The writers had an easy job: Take an old masterpiece + turn it into live action = easy money.

Wait...wait wait wait.....we have to check some boxes first. Change skin color for a bunch of people, change the theme of the story to be geared towards female empowerment (because Disney has never done that before), and make sure we hire people based on their skin color/gender. Talent? Pfff.....that's not a part of the hiring process you fool! Put aside all of the politically driven choices that were made for casting and writing (such as Arielle killing Ursula, not Eric), the film is just an absolute slog. I cannot imagine children wanting to watch this film. I was wanting to fast forward through it after only about 10 minutes. There is so much pointless fluff; it isn't exciting. What is the opposite of being "glued to your seat"? Wanting my seat to have an "EJECT" button? Yeah, that seems about right. Disney has no idea how to make movies anymore. It's just a fact. They don't care about entertainment and I don't think the executives even actually care about the various political causes they pretend to rally around either. They just care about the ESG money being funneled in from Blackrock and State Street. Well guess what Disney? I think that line of credit is starting to get tapped out. Your coffin might need one or two more nails but any way you cut it, modern Disney cannot continue in this fashion. What we the customers are left with are soulless PRODUCTS, devoid of any character, risk, heart, or quality. I have been watching the woke agenda take over for over 15 years. It was this year that normal people have finally....FINALLY started to notice. And it's about damn time.

There are so many reasons I hate this movie but here are my main ones:

Bailey is not a good fit for the role and her singing voice is not strong enough.

I hate the lack of originality: The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is very similar to the animated film. The plot, characters, and songs are all the same, and there is very little that is new or innovative about the remake. This makes me feel that the remake is unnecessary and that Disney is just trying to cash in on the nostalgia of the original film.

The abysmal CGI: The CGI in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is very poor. I could dust off an old Amiga computer and create more realistic CGI. The sea creatures look totally fake and unnatural, and the underwater scenes are often blurry and hard to see. This makes the film look dirt cheap and amateurish, and it takes away from the overall experience.

The lack of emotion: The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid lacks emotion. The characters are often wooden and unconvincing, and the story fails to elicit any real emotional response from the audience. This makes the film feel flat and lifeless, and it ultimately disappointed me. I was expecting much better.

In short: Watching seamonkeys is more interesting than that ill attempt of a movie.

They tried to empower Ariel to be this self-sufficient feminist version of herself at the cost to Eric and their relationship. The magic was lost in everything from the ship fist fight between Ursula and Ariel (as opposed to the sea animals helping), taking away Eric's role in the finale by killing Ursula and saving Ariel (now she's self sufficient and does that on her own), Eric not finding Ariel on the beach and that magic moment between them with the initial sparks, hell Eric even tries to kiss her on the boat and she moves away from him and switches to the other side of the boat. There is zero chemistry what so ever. I have never been so disappointed in a movie. The original is my absolute to this day and I feel as if this version butchered it and all the magic. The female "gannet" who replaced Skuttle has the most absolute annoying voice I have ever heard and it doesn't help when she raps her songs. Prince Eric being adopted into a Caribbean island also is so unrealistic and unnecessary. Halle does have a nice voice but her acting and facial expressions are awful. It was a very long movie, with many added songs, all not great and not needed. They really went ahead and butchered the original. All these sites won't even allow you to have a negative opinion on the movie or "you're racist" and all the ratings are censored. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mixed feelings after watching this movie. Let's put aside the fact that Disney doesn't know how to make movies anymore, let's put aside the fact that Disney has gone from the original concept of the movie by stuffing a lot of controversial changes into it that obviously hurt the movie's ratings. These are Disney's mistakes that they themselves made, for which they themselves are to blame. Let's continue ... As for me, the bias towards the realism of the underwater world is not the best idea, Flounder is an example of this. There are too many songs in the film and only half of them are of good quality. After listening to 2 songs, the third song will just get boring. As my friends said: the main character's acting is bad. The ending of the new little mermaid in my opinion is not canon. I don't even know what I like about the piece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing, absolutely beautiful film. Grew up on the original on VHS, love the animation, songs and the wonderful Jodi Benson. Skeptical about the Disney live-action remakes as I am -also on one level I wanted to see this film purely to support Halle as a fan of her and angered by the backlash she’s been getting- I was blown away by it. Became emotional multiple times, laughed so much at Sebastian I was slightly embarrassed because I couldn’t stop at one point and had a brilliant time singing along throughout.

Halle was honestly superb as Ariel, and obviously she’s gorgeous but her voice was just incredible. She played the character as she is meant to be -earnest, passionate, sweet, brave and longing to know more of the world.

The lyric changes made sense, and glad little girls of today will be growing up knowing they shouldn’t be silenced, particularly for a man. That being said, the part of the original Poor Unfortunate Souls that mentions women being preferred to be quiet by men also makes sense, because Ursula is supposed to be villainous and trying to trick Ariel -so is convincing her Eric would prefer her to be quiet. But that aside, the songs were fantastic (the scuttlebutt one was my least favourite but even that was a bop ngl).

The changes to the story genuinely really enhanced the film overall as well. All in all, it was stunning, and in my opinion the best of the live-action remakes yet. The kids watching adored it too -and let’s be honest, that’s who it’s really aimed at, children. Zillennial audience-members like me (as well as the gen-x, millennial and gen-z kids that are now grown up haha) are no longer the target audience. Can’t recommend enough, will def be going to see it in cinemas again, already have two viewings coming up. 10/10, amazing.

Ariel was already a girl boss in the original, like she knows what she wants and pursues it, girly making a move on a prince! that's already badass but nah they had to destroy a healthy relationship of two people helping, saving each other, and being there for each other. God forbid It seems like these days you're not considered badass and Girl boss if you want to find romance and want to build a healthy relationship with another person no matter how amazing of a woman you are. I also didn't get the nostalgic factor that I was hoping for, the visual is BORING and DREARY, her hair, the surroundings, and everything is so DISAPPOINTING. Expand

Not only Ariel but also Eric lost the charm they used to have in the animation version. The actor, with his glazed eyes, seemed willing to act as a love-smitten prince in every second he appears, which Eric does not. He totally lacks masculinity, quick-wittedness and the energy Eric has. And what’s more? Halle Bailey’s acting is so weak and unconvincing. I don’t care her singing. I’m watching a movie and all I want is good acting. Her appearance certainly has nothing relevant to Ariel but I always hoped that her acting could somehow save it and bring me round but no, it is worse than what you can imagine. A lifeless Ariel, a cringe romance with Eric. What Disney has done to my all-time favorite Little Mermaid is unacceptable! Expand

it's also very disappointing just how much different the story is from the original disney version. i know the original disney version is different from the original fairy tale. i prefer the original the most, but it has always mad me very sad. so i appreciated disney giving the little mermaid the happy ending she has always deserved for being so selfless. this new mermaid just feels like a cheap imposter or bootleg and the story, visuals and songs are so underwhelming it makes you wonder what was the point to even make this, except for further erase white culture.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is no where near as bad as you think. It was just marketed very poorly when it comes to the dark lighting in the film. One you see it in the theatre, the lighting is fine. In fact, the underwater scenes are more colourful. Even the scenes where Ariel meets Ursula in her Lair are still pretty colourful, I never struggled seeing anything on the movie. The entire cast does a great job portraying their characters in the film, especially Halle Bailey as Ariel, who everyone doubted the day she was announced to play the iconic mermaid. Melissa McCarthy as Ursula was surprisingly intimidating and very entertaining to watch. Sebastian played by Daveed Diggs was excellent as Sebastian, despite his odd design, I was able to overlook how creepy he looks once I saw him sing “Under The Sea” and act along side the other characters like Scuttle who I also liked. The musical numbers in the film very done very well. I loved Halle’s version of “Part of Your World” and her New song called “For the First Time”. And when it comes to the changes with the with the lyrics of Poor Unfortunate Souls and Kiss the Girl, I didn’t even notice that the lyrics were changed. It felt very natural. Lastly the movie is not feminist. Prince Eric is still very masculine and saves Ariel when he tries the harpoon at Ursula. And Ariel killing Ursula in the end makes more sense in this film since she’s Ariel’s aunt. Expand

The latest in Disney's attempt to cash in on all their old IPs instead of making something new and original has finally hit the screens and it's not great.

A far cry from the bright captivating colors of the original, this ocean is dark and muted. Have the animators even visited a coral reef before? Or are they just trying to hide imperfect CGI by just turning down the color and brightness? Perhaps they should watch Avatar 2 to see how to do a stunning live action underwater world right. The live action aspect actively hurts the film due to making the non-human characters unexpressive at best, uncanny valley at worst.

The run time is bloated, and although they have added some extra things in to fill the time, you kind of wish on the whole that they didn't. The rap song is particularly bad and doesn't feel like it fits at all with the rest of the music in the film.

Halle can certainly sing, but that's just not enough by itself to save this movie. Like many of Disney's remakes that have gone before, there's no particular reason for this live action remake to exist apart from being nostalgia bait. A low effort way to try and reel audiences in rather than making something shiny and new. Give it a miss and watch the original instead.

IAh, the disappointment of seeing beloved characters undergo drastic changes. It's frustrating when filmmakers deviate too far from the essence of the original characters for no good reason other than appease the current political climate. I can appreciate somebody trying to make an honest dime but talk about sell-out.
I had high hopes for this movie, but sadly, the changes made to the characters were just too much to handle. It felt like they completely disregarded what made these characters special and turned them into unrecognizable versions of themselves. It was a disservice to the fans who grew up with these characters and invested their love and admiration. The new interpretations lacked the charm, depth, and relatability that made the originals so captivating. It's a shame when a movie prioritizes unnecessary changes over honoring the source material and the fans who made it a success.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Spectacular Underwater Journey The Little Mermaid Dives Deep into Delight

★★★★★ (5/5)

"The Little Mermaid" (2023) breathes new life into a beloved tale, enchanting audiences with its mesmerizing visuals, heartfelt performances, and a vibrant reimagination that captures the essence of the original story while adding its own unique flair. As a fan of the classic animated film, I was both excited and slightly apprehensive about this live-action adaptation, but I can confidently say that it exceeded all my expectations.

One of the most captivating aspects of "The Little Mermaid" is the stunning visual experience it offers. The film plunges us into a dazzling underwater world filled with vibrant coral reefs, shimmering sea creatures, and breathtaking landscapes. The attention to detail in the production design and visual effects is truly commendable. Every scene is a visual feast, immersing the audience in a magical and awe-inspiring underwater realm.

Halle Bailey's portrayal of Ariel is nothing short of exceptional. She brings a perfect blend of innocence, curiosity, and determination to the character, infusing her with a fresh and contemporary charm. Bailey's incredible vocal talent shines throughout the film, capturing the spirit and beauty of the iconic songs we all know and love, while also adding her own unique interpretation.

The supporting cast is equally praiseworthy, with standout performances from Javier Bardem as King Triton, who brings both regality and emotional depth to the role, and Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula, who delivers a deliciously wicked and memorable performance. The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, elevating the emotional impact of the story and making us invest in their journeys.

The film also deserves accolades for its thoughtful storytelling. It strikes a delicate balance between honoring the original source material and introducing fresh elements. The script delves deeper into the characters' motivations and emotions, adding layers of complexity that resonate with contemporary audiences. The themes of identity, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams are explored with depth and sensitivity, making this adaptation relevant and relatable.

Finally, the music in "The Little Mermaid" is simply sublime. The iconic songs we cherish from the animated film are beautifully reimagined and performed, accompanied by a captivating orchestral score that enhances the emotional impact of the story. From the stirring melodies of "Part of Your World" to the show-stopping power of "Poor Unfortunate Souls," the music remains as enchanting as ever, ensuring an unforgettable cinematic experience.

"The Little Mermaid" (2023) is a triumph that honors its animated predecessor while carving its own path. With its spellbinding visuals, outstanding performances, and a story that tugs at the heartstrings, this film is a testament to the power of storytelling and the magic of cinema. Prepare to be swept away on a memorable and magical journey beneath the waves.

They have killed all the classics + star wars + Indiana jones + marvel... Well done.
