Spare yourselves and watch the original animated version instead. Not funny, no character development from both protagonists. Only good thing about it is Melissa McArthy's performance.

WHY JUST WHY? the candid picture perfect of the animated movie is infinitely better than this woke, corrupted, abomination. Forced diversity is ruining the integrity and quality in movies nowadays because of stupid woke left-wing politics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, an actual review here in this sea of tears from 30-year-old 4 chan crybabies. I watched the animated one a couple of days ago to refresh my memory, and I can say this movie is an actual good adaptation from the recent Disney live-action wave.

As a pro, Halle is a good Ariel; her songs have some eeriness in them. In general his voice is very good, Prince Eric was also kinda decent, as was Ursula. Triton having one daughter per sea is something I found funny because he is the nephew of Zeus. All the underwater animations are fascinating. I really admire whoever animated Ariel's hair, tail, and all those animals from the "Under the Sea" song. I liked the Sebastian redesign; the old one was weird. Flounder, on the other hand, was very unappealing, and I wish his eyes were different.

There was one song that was obviously written by Lin-Manuel Miranda that I really disliked, though. I wish that song wasn't in the movie. The final Ursula fight was maybe the poorest part in terms of visuals, but again, making a giant octopus 3D lady must be hard.

I don't like the Disney live-action movies; they are usually bad, like "Alice in Wonderland" or "The Jungle Book." But I liked this one, and I think the kids will love this movie. Plugging this movie into the Moist Meter, I'll give it an 8 out of 10.

First of all, the highest score that I can only give is 3 points, 1 points for special effects, 1 points for music, and 1 points for the evil princess, which is the only beautiful female in the movie.

The plot is quite boring, there is nothing to say, the overall feeling is very cold and difficult to empathize.

The good part of this movie is underwater visual effects and music.

The underwater special effects are not as good as the Avatar 2 but better than the Black Panther 2.

There is no need to talk about the lead actress' race and appearance, everyone understands. However, the lead actress singing skill is good, it would better for her to be a singer, not an actor. But her voice is more like the voice of an adult woman, a mature and powerful type of voice, feeling very incompatible with little mermaid, don't feel like a young teenage female. The Internet says that Beyoncé taught her singing? Maybe that's why.

In terms of acting, only little mermaid's father and that evil octopus witch have good acting performance, all the others have zombie face and dead fish eye, when the standard of being a actor become so low?

The most beautiful one in the whole movie is the evil princess, which the octopus witch transformed, but the total appearance time of her is like less than ten minutes, what a shame! And this actress looks like a young and skinny version of Adele, also with similar accent, maybe because they are all British I guess.

How can it be so bad with such subpar cgi and terrible acting and songs. And my kids could not sit for 2.5 hours...what the hell were they thinking?

And that horrible scuttlebutt song...that was insane. How did that pass quality control?

I watched the original film for the first time after watching this and understood why everyone was so upset about this film. This new one is dull and lifeless with dumb modern touches that destroy the timelessness of the original. Disney needs to fail. I finally accept it and hopefully the disastrous indiana Jones sequel coming later this summer will put the final nail in the coffin. Films like this make one realize how cynical and empty and hateful and greedy the people redoing all these stories are because you can actually go back and watch the original which transports you into a fairytale the way it is supposed to.

Let disney die. Nothing of it remains, anyway here.

Good riddance.

I only give this a 0 because The Little Mermaid failed at its job to entertain me or anyone else in the audience and feels like a bad and pointless cash grab.
Most of the good stuff will be better in the original animated feature, so why bother giving it points when there's a top-notch animated version compared to this depressing remake that stole the sole from the OG film and replaced it with garbage?
The CGI is rushed and looks awful, for example. They expect this to work well with kids when the designs look just as bad as the other CGI elements, which freaked out the kids in my audience.
Worse, the songs.
Some are missing, while the additions don't fit and feel like they were songs stolen from another feature or production and slapped out of laziness.
Not to mention, the runtime is 2 and 1/2 hours. There is no need for that runtime, and it's painfully clear why when it forgets how to tell the story during parts of the movie and adds filler to make it to the runtime.
It's not surprising the kids in the audience were bored and wanted to leave.
My little brother and sister, who wanted to go, hated it, and they asked me to take them.
You're wasting your time if you see the remake.
Just watch the original. Everything is better there, and you don't have to worry about freaking out or boring your kids.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I promise, this is not brigading…I actually paid to watch this crap! The Little Mermaid is definitely not the worst live-action Disney remake but it is the most frustrating by far. It is a mess of differing tones, great cgi mixed with laughably atrocious cgi, over-acting mixed with wooden acting. This movie doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Tone - starts off as visually darker, more gritty, and more realistic (the sea life looks and acts like they’re real.) Missing a few of the musical numbers from the beginning of the animated film, but then halfway jumps to bright, vibrant cartoonish colors and lighting and haphazardly goes from one song straight into another. They even gave Scuttle the bird (voiced by Awkafina) a freaking RAP. And all the musical numbers have that annoying sing-talk-sing-talk formula.

CGI - underwater elements looks good, except the characters themselves. Hair sometimes sways with the ocean, sometimes it looks like a helmet. When characters are fully computer generated, their faces look like bad deepfake (there’s one scene with Ariel near the end of the film where it doesnt even look like she has pupils). The finale with giant Ursula is so dark it was obvious that it was intentional to cover up the laughable cgi. Acting - Halley Bailey was usually good (sometimes overacting though) in scenes by herself, but has awful and blank reaction shots whenever anyone is talking to her. Melissa McCarthy is understandably hammy with her overacting to the point where she wouldn’t be out of place in a bad off-off-Broadway production. (For Venture Bros fans out there, she sounds EXACTLY like Red Mantle.) All of Ariel’s sisters are wooden that they give Gal Gadot a run for her money. Akwafina was Akwafina. Prince Eric guy was okay, but his performance made me wonder why this movie has five different accents in one region…British, American, Spanish, Caribbean, and New Orleans??

So why did I waste my time and money on this turd? I was excited to go to a movie theater with my kid, who is four. My kid has that new glimmer of excitement when I ask if they want to see a movie in a theater! But it is very telling how bad a movie is when your four year old says it’s, “kinda okay”.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A nonsense and unnecessary live action. Terrible casting by the way. The race ''diversity'' doesn't make sense sometimes. Triton is polygamist, his daughters are all from different races. Ursula is the pretty one, Eric's mother is black but Eric is white. And of course, the protagonist's absurd race swapping from white to black obviously to promote Halle Bailey's career. She can be sweet sometimes during the film, but she's definitely not Ariel. Her acting feels forced and fake in order to fit a character she never fit into from the very beginning. The CGI sometimes looks good, but most times looks horrible. The animals are not funny at all, and all the comedy that the original movie had got lost. In general, this film does not have anything new to add up to the same formula and falls far short of its animated counterpart. Expand

There are no surprises, no changes in the formula and, therefore, it's more of the same. This is the recipe that Disney has decided to apply in all the live-action remakes of its animated classics.
True, there have been some worse than others, but The Little Mermaid is far from that, and yet it is the most controversial film of them all.

I don't want to touch too much on that subject, but it's relevant to do so for the simple reason that there are millions of people who won't give a **** about anything else in the movie, they'll just notice that the lead actress has dark skin. It's disgusting, but it's part of a much bigger cancer than just a movie. One thing I can tell you is that, if you're a person with enough brains to see beyond that, The Little Mermaid is precisely the film it wanted to be.
The music and its production values are on point and Halle Bailey, captures the spirit of the character by making it her own in her own personal way.
It may not be the best that can be done in terms of adaptations, but it's not the disaster that many were predicting just because. This is a system product and therefore everything moves inside a box but there are levels of quality within that system and The Little Mermaid is not a failure in those terms.
It's a regular, average and inconsequential movie, but for its intended audience, and by that I mean children, I think they'll enjoy it. And of course, you can argue again about the reason for their existence, as well as the rest of the remakes Disney has made in this line, but I think it should be pretty clear by now that they have no interest in stopping making them no matter how much some people complain. And no, the animated classics are not ruined. The damn movies are still there 100% available.
If you don't like remakes there's always the option of not watching them, you know?

These new remakes are not helping or getting things any better for the company. The Little Mermaid (2023) is absolutely unnecessary, soulless, hollow and colorless. Halle Bailey's acting was not bad, but definetely feels forced, overacted and too theatrical most times. Ursula doesn't feel like Ursula. The GCI sometimes looks fair, but most times look terrible. The new songs don't seem to fit in the whole film concept. And of course, not to mention the feminist agenda behind this product, which is really pathetic considering this was a movie that was supposed to be made for kids. Sorry, but I consider this movie a flop. It's not the Little Mermaid and definetely not Ariel. Expand

Every single change is made for the worse. The feeling that the animation invokes is completely lost in a film that's trying so hard to hide it's disdain for the themes of the original but it just can't help itself. The animals look terrifying. Changes made to the plot, although admittedly small changes, are still significant enough to make you scratch your head and ask "Why would they do that?". But then you remember that it's the mythical modern audience that this was made for... It's not worth the price of admission by a long shot. The CGI is terrible with actual divergences, suggesting that when it was baked there were system issues, and no one cared. They just shipped it with encoding issue. The "real" CGI characters have no ability to emote, which robs a lot of the charm of the original movie. A total disaster. Expand

Halle Bailey is the perfect Ariel and I fell in love Ariel and Eric’s romance it reminded me of old Disney, Jess Alexander who played Vanessa was amazing! She owned every scene she was in, love the diversity of the sisters and how much more scenes they have than the original and the new music was really fun to actually see played out with the scenes….yes even Scuttlebutt. In my honest opinion this version is a little bit better than the original. I love the new scenes and the actual friendship to romance that Ariel and Eric developed. Would definitely recommend and ignore the angry bitter trolls. Just like the YouTube dislikes, their review bombs have 0 effect on this film Expand

Unnecessary changes to characters…
Such a dark and gloomy world compared to original ad well? I don’t understand that direction.

The lead actress had a great voice but terrible casting choice. She simply doesn’t fit the part from the Ariel we all grew up with. Re-imagine something les iconic next time.

Also the cgi is an abomination.
Run time was way too long.
Also I can’t stand Melissa McCarthy anymore.

Save your money this Memorial Day weekend and play the original film for your kiddos.

My kid loved the movie (also the 1989 version - so she knows them both) and that is more than enough for me (but having a stupid right-wing-crowd feeling obligated to review-bomb while peeing their pants and getting a stroke is a nice bonus, I might add). If this is woke, then by all means being non woke apparently means hating children - specifically your own. And if your kids are getting "confused" (by what?) then it is not their fault or Disney's but their parents.
