The music, the visuals and a star turning performance from Bailey captures the magic of the original in ways live actions remakes usually don’t. It is so fabulous!!! I’ve gone 3 times, it has that old Disney magic

This live action far exceeds all expectations and the whole cast is excellent in their respective roles. Halle Bailey is enchanting, the biggest talent of our generation. Jonah Hauer-King is sure to be the next leading man and heartthrob.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, an actual review here in this sea of tears from 30-year-old 4 chan crybabies. I watched the animated one a couple of days ago to refresh my memory, and I can say this movie is an actual good adaptation from the recent Disney live-action wave.

As a pro, Halle is a good Ariel; her songs have some eeriness in them. In general his voice is very good, Prince Eric was also kinda decent, as was Ursula. Triton having one daughter per sea is something I found funny because he is the nephew of Zeus. All the underwater animations are fascinating. I really admire whoever animated Ariel's hair, tail, and all those animals from the "Under the Sea" song. I liked the Sebastian redesign; the old one was weird. Flounder, on the other hand, was very unappealing, and I wish his eyes were different.

There was one song that was obviously written by Lin-Manuel Miranda that I really disliked, though. I wish that song wasn't in the movie. The final Ursula fight was maybe the poorest part in terms of visuals, but again, making a giant octopus 3D lady must be hard.

I don't like the Disney live-action movies; they are usually bad, like "Alice in Wonderland" or "The Jungle Book." But I liked this one, and I think the kids will love this movie. Plugging this movie into the Moist Meter, I'll give it an 8 out of 10.

My kid loved the movie (also the 1989 version - so she knows them both) and that is more than enough for me (but having a stupid right-wing-crowd feeling obligated to review-bomb while peeing their pants and getting a stroke is a nice bonus, I might add). If this is woke, then by all means being non woke apparently means hating children - specifically your own. And if your kids are getting "confused" (by what?) then it is not their fault or Disney's but their parents.

This movie exceeded all of my expectations. From the stunning visuals to the captivating new but familiar plot, this movie truly has it all.
The underwater scenes were absolutely gorgeous, and the clothes, hair, makeup, and places were incredibly well done. It truly felt like I was transported into that magical world.
I was particularly impressed with the way the directors were able to modernize the story while still staying somewhat true to the original. Even though I lowkey missed some parts from the animated version, I absolutely enjoyed and loved the new additions here. And its commitment to diversity. The cast is refreshingly diverse, featuring actors from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. This not only adds an important element of representation to the film but also makes the story feel more authentic and inclusive. And of course, I have to give a special shoutout to Halle Bailey's singing voice. She absolutely nailed every song in the movie, bringing a fresh and modern take to some classic tunes. Her voice is so ethereal. Her rendition of "Part of Your World" and even her version of "Vanessa's Trick" gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.
Overall, I would highly recommend The Little Mermaid to anyone looking for a new, visually stunning, engaging, and diverse movie that will capture your heart from beginning to end. Diversity and inclusion are never bad when done properly, it doesn't affect the plot or character here, different versions can exist, and we can choose our favorite and ignore the others.

Halle Bailey is the perfect Ariel and I fell in love Ariel and Eric’s romance it reminded me of old Disney, Jess Alexander who played Vanessa was amazing! She owned every scene she was in, love the diversity of the sisters and how much more scenes they have than the original and the new music was really fun to actually see played out with the scenes….yes even Scuttlebutt. In my honest opinion this version is a little bit better than the original. I love the new scenes and the actual friendship to romance that Ariel and Eric developed. And giving a nod with the quote at the start to Hans Christian Andersen truly made my heart soar!
As a lifelong fan of The Little Mermaid, it was the FIRST film I remember seeing in theaters with my Father and family.
This was everything I could have ever asked for from one of my most beloved films; a film that inspired me from the tender age of 5 when it first came out - a film that showed that love overcomes all, imagination and faith can make anything possible and that anyone can become a part of the world they wish for with just a little effort, hope, and ambition.
Halle Bailey; you did such a great job bringing Ariel to life. Thank you for playing this role with such beautiful finesse and bringing one of my favorite princesses to life with perfect execution!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Spectacular Underwater Journey The Little Mermaid Dives Deep into Delight

★★★★★ (5/5)

"The Little Mermaid" (2023) breathes new life into a beloved tale, enchanting audiences with its mesmerizing visuals, heartfelt performances, and a vibrant reimagination that captures the essence of the original story while adding its own unique flair. As a fan of the classic animated film, I was both excited and slightly apprehensive about this live-action adaptation, but I can confidently say that it exceeded all my expectations.

One of the most captivating aspects of "The Little Mermaid" is the stunning visual experience it offers. The film plunges us into a dazzling underwater world filled with vibrant coral reefs, shimmering sea creatures, and breathtaking landscapes. The attention to detail in the production design and visual effects is truly commendable. Every scene is a visual feast, immersing the audience in a magical and awe-inspiring underwater realm.

Halle Bailey's portrayal of Ariel is nothing short of exceptional. She brings a perfect blend of innocence, curiosity, and determination to the character, infusing her with a fresh and contemporary charm. Bailey's incredible vocal talent shines throughout the film, capturing the spirit and beauty of the iconic songs we all know and love, while also adding her own unique interpretation.

The supporting cast is equally praiseworthy, with standout performances from Javier Bardem as King Triton, who brings both regality and emotional depth to the role, and Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula, who delivers a deliciously wicked and memorable performance. The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, elevating the emotional impact of the story and making us invest in their journeys.

The film also deserves accolades for its thoughtful storytelling. It strikes a delicate balance between honoring the original source material and introducing fresh elements. The script delves deeper into the characters' motivations and emotions, adding layers of complexity that resonate with contemporary audiences. The themes of identity, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams are explored with depth and sensitivity, making this adaptation relevant and relatable.

Finally, the music in "The Little Mermaid" is simply sublime. The iconic songs we cherish from the animated film are beautifully reimagined and performed, accompanied by a captivating orchestral score that enhances the emotional impact of the story. From the stirring melodies of "Part of Your World" to the show-stopping power of "Poor Unfortunate Souls," the music remains as enchanting as ever, ensuring an unforgettable cinematic experience.

"The Little Mermaid" (2023) is a triumph that honors its animated predecessor while carving its own path. With its spellbinding visuals, outstanding performances, and a story that tugs at the heartstrings, this film is a testament to the power of storytelling and the magic of cinema. Prepare to be swept away on a memorable and magical journey beneath the waves.

I usually dislike movies with Melissa McCarthy but I felt like she was Ursula, voice and all. The main star sounded like Ariel and absolutely killed the songs. Otherwise the story was a pretty true interpretation of the classic cartoon with only minor changes to the aesthetic while maintaining a new reboot feel to the experience.

My only gripe is about 2 of the new three songs in the film. I thought the first and second were completely unnecessary and felt forced to give the main two stars more singing presence. The third one was pretty funny and enjoyable though. The big thing about this movie was that my daughter loved every minute of it. She thought the original cartoon was boring, but this one had vibrant colors, great sound, great momentum, and a brilliant cast that kept her engaged through the whole movie.

All in all, color me surprised and impressed.

Therefore, as an adult with my youngest child already in Middle School, there would be no reason for me to go see this in a theatre. Thus, in all transparency, I must admit that I only went with my family because of all of the backlash to the casting of Ariel, which is beyond ridiculous, and was fully prepared to sit through an uninteresting movie. All that being said, I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable the movie was, though the bar was low. And what I did find most enjoyable was the people of color period throughout the movie. I only expected Ariel’s character to be diverse. This actually added to the interesting elements of a movie that if it had been all-white, save the Jamaican crab, would have not provided as entertaining experience. This goes to show something I’ve often advocated in the workplace, that diversity for the sake of diversity should not be the imperative (I actually agree with the conservative and/or racist in this regard). But diversity should be an initiative to provide differing perspectives which add to the experience, whether in the course of completing a 9-5 job, or for pure entertainment value. In all of the woke/diversity/etc battles of today, its easy to miss how overwhelmingly White cinema and TV still is. Over 70% of shows and movies have white characters, with many most scripts calling for all but perhaps 1 or 2 people of color in the programs. To me more damning is the fact that over 90% of all shows and movies are at least headed by a White lead or co-lead. The real issue isn’t any forced diversity, it’s that we are squabbling over diverse projects that haven’t even scratched the surface. My hope is that people see this movie as a testament to the richness of diverse casts on the experience, rather than another diatribe against anything that takes people out of their idealized white world. The movie is above average, but sadly has some down sides in comparison to the animated original, which was a solid 10/10.

The story is told less consistent and logical. For example in the beginning for some sailors mermaids seem to be a mystery and superstition while over time this changes and it seems to be common knowledge that merfolk exists and there is just diplomatic silence. In other parts the movie is more faithful to the original fairytale than the animated version was though. This doesn't fix the plot holes and plot cracks sadly.

The little mermaid actress is looking very fitting, but is not as good at acting, as she should be. Overall a lot of the cast could be better actors. It's not extremely bad, but its taking a toll on immersion.

There is a exception though, which is Melissa McCarthy who plays Ursula. She is amazing in this role and in that role even easily surpasses the original Ursula from the animated version. She elevates the movie to heights the original Disney movie wasn't able to reach at parts.

That together with the weaknesses brings the movie to a solid above average rating.

While the film is far from perfect, it makes a lot of fun and interesting changes to the source material. A few things of note are: Improving and expanding the character of Prince Eric, improving and expanding the dynamic between Triton and Ursula, improving and expanding the romance between Ariel and Eric, they removed Louis, the crazy chef guy. Yes, I consider this an improvement… Dude creeped me out as a kid, and they sort of “fixed” a plot hole with Ariel’s contract to Ursula.

With all of the positives out of the way, there were a few negatives about this film. It suffers from the same issues that most of these Disney live action adaptation films suffer from… It just sort of felt like a formality or something for Disney to mark off of a check list. I mentioned that they made some fun adjustments to the original source material, but at the same time, there is a lot of elements of the film that follow the original “beat for beat,” and some of the actors’ performances suffer from this. Javier Bardem (King Triton) felt like he was struggling to find something new to do with his role but just couldn’t seem to make it happen because he was restricted by having to do an almost word-for-word performance of the original character.

The Little Mermaid

Halle Bailey is the perfect Ariel.

This remake of the beloved classic brings to life the fairy tale story of Ariel, and injects as much realness as the story can take.

Halle Bailey is enough reason to love this remake. She's dainty; she sells the naive mermaid that longs to live on the surface world. Halle's voice is ethereal and when she comes to the surface world and can't use her voice anymore, her eyes properly portray her emotions and thoughts. Melissa McCarthy as Ursula is the movie's star, shining darkly and devilishly commanding every scene she features in. Jessica Alexander also adequately brings Ursula to the surface world as femme fatale Vanessa. Jonah Hauer-King as Eric is also a delight.

The Little Mermaid packs a lot of new additions (other than the diversity it offers). The changes to the plot, especially the ones about the contract are well-done. Ariel not remembering the deal also lends to a better love story with Eric. Scuttle's new song sung by Awkwafina although loud and jarring is a welcome standout moment.

For all the praise that The Little Mermaid garners, it also has its fair share of flaws. In the pursuit of realism, the movie's underwater scenes are too dark. The animations of Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle are too realistic, creating a disconnection between the voice acting from the actors—that are well cast—and the animated characters. Due to the short screen time that Ariel's sisters get, they seem more like set pieces, and the diversity their casting offers ends up mostly performative.

Most Disney remakes carry an air of 'why was this made again' but The Little Mermaid ranks as one of the best Disney remakes.

TheThis mesmerizing live-action musical, starring the talented Halle Bailey, is an absolute triumph! The Little Mermaid showcases the beloved tale in a fresh and captivating way, with stunning visuals that bring the underwater world to life. The CGI is seamless, creating a truly immersive experience that surpassed my expectations.

In this adaptation of The Little Mermaid, we follow the enchanting journey of Ariel (Halle Bailey), a young mermaid who longs to explore the human world. The film stays true to the heart of the original story, emphasizing themes of self-discovery, love and the importance of staying true to oneself. The Little Mermaid delivers exceptional performances, breathtaking visuals, and captivating storytelling. Halle Bailey performs remarkably, capturing Ariel’s curiosity, spirit, and powerful voice. Casting a Black actress in the iconic role of Ariel is a decisive step toward diversifying the portrayal of princesses on screen. It offers young audiences, particularly Black girls who have rarely seen themselves in mainstream media, a chance to see a character they can deeply identify with, and I love that! The cast is rounded out with renowned actors who bring depth and charm to their respective roles. Tony winner Daveed Diggs gives a comedic, clever and heartfelt performance as Sebastian the Crab. Awkwafina’s delightful portrayal of Scuttle the Seagull and Jonah Hauer-King’s as Prince Eric brilliantly captures the original characters’ essence while bringing their unique charm and charisma to the roles. They skillfully breathe new life into these beloved characters, adding depth and memorable moments that both longtime fans and new audiences will appreciate. The costumes, designed by Colleen Atwood, beautifully capture the underwater kingdom and the human world above. The music score by the talented duo of Oscar winner Alan Menken and Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is magical, seamlessly blending Menken’s enchanting melodies with Miranda’s vibrant and rhythmic compositions, resulting in an unforgettable and captivating musical experience.

The Little Mermaid carries a powerful message of self-acceptance, courage and pursuing one's dreams. It promotes positive social behavior and portrays relationships built on understanding and empathy. I give The Little Mermaid 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 12, plus adults. It releases in theaters on May 26, 2023. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Ariel and embark on a magical adventure! By Hanadie K., KIDS FIRST!

Jonah Hauer King is also very charming as the prince. Sebastian the crab is also very well realized and even though the design is a little bland, they fixed the facial expression issues from the Lion King remake. The underwater sequences look horrible sometimes but I think that is because we just saw Avatar The Way of Water and we have high expectations for underwater scenes now. The production above water like some of the action sequences are very high quality. The sequences with songs especially Under the Sea is a massive highlight; very vibrant and fun. The new songs are also very catchy. Alan Menken's score is also stunning, and there are key moments which gave me goosebumps especially towards the end. I think what works best is the chemistry between Bailey and King. The sequences in which they bond and fall in love is very romantic and I loved those scenes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Best live action remake from Disney by far, it's a faithful adaptation of the original, with its core story and message being respected, but with little additions here and there. The main characters' personalities and motifs are shown more in depth; Prince Eric actually has a personality and a reason to fall in love with Ariel, since they have many things in common, and that for me solves the biggest downside of the original. Their relationship developes in a much nicer and more believable way than in the original, and even if they had to lengthen it by a lot to achieve this, it's not a boring movie. Underwater scenes were less nice-looking than others, but overall good CGI and cinematography. The animals' design and animation actually don't look bad after a few minutes into their scenes as they do in promotional media, only exception being Flounder. Their characters are well intepretated and deliver good comedic relief. Very good acting from almost everyone and very good music scenes, also didn't mind the new ones. Everything feels believable (as much as mermaids can feel believable) and it doesn't feel like they're pushing any agenda. I don't really see issues with the different ethnicities as the movie is set in the Caribbean and it is explained that Eric was adopted, which is why he is the only white character in the movie. Although they could have pushed a bit more on the creative side and with Ursula's character, as a huge fan of the original I'd definitely recommend watching, unlike almost every other remake by Disney in recent years. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is no where near as bad as you think. It was just marketed very poorly when it comes to the dark lighting in the film. One you see it in the theatre, the lighting is fine. In fact, the underwater scenes are more colourful. Even the scenes where Ariel meets Ursula in her Lair are still pretty colourful, I never struggled seeing anything on the movie. The entire cast does a great job portraying their characters in the film, especially Halle Bailey as Ariel, who everyone doubted the day she was announced to play the iconic mermaid. Melissa McCarthy as Ursula was surprisingly intimidating and very entertaining to watch. Sebastian played by Daveed Diggs was excellent as Sebastian, despite his odd design, I was able to overlook how creepy he looks once I saw him sing “Under The Sea” and act along side the other characters like Scuttle who I also liked. The musical numbers in the film very done very well. I loved Halle’s version of “Part of Your World” and her New song called “For the First Time”. And when it comes to the changes with the with the lyrics of Poor Unfortunate Souls and Kiss the Girl, I didn’t even notice that the lyrics were changed. It felt very natural. Lastly the movie is not feminist. Prince Eric is still very masculine and saves Ariel when he tries the harpoon at Ursula. And Ariel killing Ursula in the end makes more sense in this film since she’s Ariel’s aunt. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing, absolutely beautiful film. Grew up on the original on VHS, love the animation, songs and the wonderful Jodi Benson. Skeptical about the Disney live-action remakes as I am -also on one level I wanted to see this film purely to support Halle as a fan of her and angered by the backlash she’s been getting- I was blown away by it. Became emotional multiple times, laughed so much at Sebastian I was slightly embarrassed because I couldn’t stop at one point and had a brilliant time singing along throughout.

Halle was honestly superb as Ariel, and obviously she’s gorgeous but her voice was just incredible. She played the character as she is meant to be -earnest, passionate, sweet, brave and longing to know more of the world.

The lyric changes made sense, and glad little girls of today will be growing up knowing they shouldn’t be silenced, particularly for a man. That being said, the part of the original Poor Unfortunate Souls that mentions women being preferred to be quiet by men also makes sense, because Ursula is supposed to be villainous and trying to trick Ariel -so is convincing her Eric would prefer her to be quiet. But that aside, the songs were fantastic (the scuttlebutt one was my least favourite but even that was a bop ngl).

The changes to the story genuinely really enhanced the film overall as well. All in all, it was stunning, and in my opinion the best of the live-action remakes yet. The kids watching adored it too -and let’s be honest, that’s who it’s really aimed at, children. Zillennial audience-members like me (as well as the gen-x, millennial and gen-z kids that are now grown up haha) are no longer the target audience. Can’t recommend enough, will def be going to see it in cinemas again, already have two viewings coming up. 10/10, amazing.
