One has to wonder what this cast could have done with an original IP with a different director and Avatar-like visuals. Some baffling narrative choices water down (pun intended) the script. Watch the original instead.

The casting is fine for the most part, but casting Halle Bailey as Ariel is enough to justify that the live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" would be nominated not for an Oscar, but for next year's Razzie Awards. Ultimately, this rendition of "The Little Mermaid" leaves much to be desired, failing to recreate the magic and wonder that made the original tale resonate with audiences of all ages. Therefore, Disney should have no other choice but to remake the movie again by re-casting Ariel completely from scratch and leaving the rest intact.… Expand

It's because Disney ruined memories, demandings and trample on the original. If anyone really think, it's because she is black is blatantly wrong. Furthermore the decision, that is clearly made on a woke base, is just wrong. Politics should NEVER have an impact on an original.

Facts: If Disney really wanted to be an woke ambassador, why not creating (and risking) a black mermaid on a brand new name? Thats the second thing, why this remake deserves the flop status. No one would care about Halle Bailey as a Mermaid. People care because Disney used expactions from the name Arielle. Create new male or female heroes, even trans or black, wouldn't create that outcome.

When you have zero respect for the original, you get what you deserve.
Not true? Let's take a look at The witcher when Henry left, let's take a look at the Witcher spin off, and also the Rings of Power.

Very, very sad what they've done to an iconic piece of literature. Ariel isn't Ariel, Prince Eric isn't Prince Eric, and don't even get my started on King Triton. A huge waste of time that you couldn't pay me enough to see again.

Don't bother going to the theatres for this one, it will release on streaming for free but even then I wouldn't recommend this movie. I wanted to give it a fair shot, like I have all the live action remakes and every time I’m shocked at how bad they are. I set my bar pretty low and Disney somehow manages to undershoot by miles. Just stop, stop ruining everything and focus on creating good/new stories. I still believe you’re capable of it, despite all evidence to the contrary. To be honest I wanted to give it a zero out of 10 but that wouldn’t be fair. Is it the worst remake? No. Is it the best remake? No. It's what you would expect of a remake. The CGI is wonky at times. The romance scenes seem forced. The only song that I really liked was McCarthy's Poor Unfortunate Souls, because it stayed true to the original as much as it could. McCarthy was also really good as Ursula, and I think she fit into the role quite nicely. Also, really liked the fact that Jodi Benson had a cameo. I will never forgive Lin-Manuel Miranda for putting The Scuttlebutt in the film. Not only was it cringe, but it was annoying. I also had a hard time sitting still as the movie was 2 hrs and 15 mins long. The changes were unnecessary and add nothing to the story. Save yourself. Watch the original. You'll have a better time of watching that, then you will this.… Expand

The CGI of the film is really bad for 250 M budget, strange and many times it gave me the feeling that the main actress had her head on someone else's trunk, looking more dry inside de water than outside. MUSIC: in the song "Part of your world" the actress makes an abrupt intonation (Beyonce´s style) in a sweet song that is out of tune and ruins an iconic song.
Most of the songs are strange and fail to produce the emotion and sweetness of the original film (rap... seriously?)
Everybody in Disney should remember what means The little mermaid to the company...
the movie saver of bankruptcy, and change the Disney company forever.

Rob Marshall is a Philistine. There is no excuse to defend this movie, the cast are majority garbage and the biggest let down, again, is Melissa McCarthy. Seriously. Find a new career. Entertainment is not it.

The CGI is horrid despite being the biggest spend and at some points I felt it was way too dark literally and written for kids to enjoy.

This is another notch in Disney's belt that says they just need to stop.

If you're curious, go see it but try and not spend money doing so. The cinema was empty when I went bar a family at the front and even the kids seemed disinterested.… Expand

Completely unnecessary. This movie does nothing to justify its own existence. All it does is try giving Ariel a false sense of empowerment at the expense of Eric. Never actually seems like anyone is underwater. CGI is horrific. The new songs aren't good. Too many changes from the original and too long. Yet another live action that fails to live up to the animated.

Most of the good stuff will be better in the original animated feature, so why bother giving it points when there's a top-notch animated version compared to this depressing remake that stole the sole from the OG film and replaced it with garbage?
The CGI is rushed and looks awful, for example. They expect this to work well with kids when the designs look just as bad as the other CGI elements, which freaked out the kids in my audience.
Worse, the songs.
Some are missing, while the additions don't fit and feel like they were songs stolen from another feature or production and slapped out of laziness.
Not to mention, the runtime is 2 and 1/2 hours. There is no need for that runtime, and it's painfully clear why when it forgets how to tell the story during parts of the movie and adds filler to make it to the runtime.
It's not surprising the kids in the audience were bored and wanted to leave.
My little brother and sister, who wanted to go, hated it, and they asked me to take them.
You're wasting your time if you see the remake.
Just watch the original. Everything is better there, and you don't have to worry about freaking out or boring your kids.… Expand

The good part of this movie is underwater visual effects and music.

The underwater special effects are not as good as the Avatar 2 but better than the Black Panther 2.

There is no need to talk about the lead actress' race and appearance, everyone understands. However, the lead actress singing skill is good, it would better for her to be a singer, not an actor. But her voice is more like the voice of an adult woman, a mature and powerful type of voice, feeling very incompatible with little mermaid, don't feel like a young teenage female. The Internet says that Beyoncé taught her singing? Maybe that's why.

In terms of acting, only little mermaid's father and that evil octopus witch have good acting performance, all the others have zombie face and dead fish eye, when the standard of being a actor become so low?

The most beautiful one in the whole movie is the evil princess, which the octopus witch transformed, but the total appearance time of her is like less than ten minutes, what a shame! I watched the original film for the first time after watching this and understood why everyone was so upset about this film. This new one is dull and lifeless with dumb modern touches that destroy the timelessness of the original. Disney needs to fail. I finally accept it and hopefully the disastrous indiana Jones sequel coming later this summer will put the final nail in the coffin. Films like this make one realize how cynical and empty and hateful and greedy the people redoing all these stories are because you can actually go back and watch the original which transports you into a fairytale the way it is supposed to.

Let disney die. Nothing of it remains, anyway here.

It narrowly avoids being a total disaster, thanks solely to Halle Bailey nailing the role of Ariel on an Individual level, despite being given nothing to work with here. I know the suspicion going in was she was cast for the sake of diversity, a race swap for the sake of race swapping for 'woke points', but whatever the reason was she is absolutely tremendous and feels every inch a real life Ariel. Well done her.

Oh and I liked the use of vivid colour in Under The Sea. And it kept my two little ones entertained for an hour before they began to lose focus.

There, that's everything I can possibly say nice about this. Everything else - all other songs, the rest of the cast, the bloat added to the plot, the... literally everything - is a trainwreck, as in as bad and as uninspired as it gets, right down there with other calamitous Disney live action dross. But with this one you also get the added bonus of CGI nightmare fuel throughout. I'll see Flounder in my nightmares for years to come. I get the movie isn't made with my demographic in mind, but I can still judge it on its own merits,especially as a father. And it's awful. It has sole but no soul.… Expand
