This movie has none of the charm or magic of the original. The atmosphere is dark, the acting is terrible, the music is awful, and the most memorable parts have been changed to fit some woke narrative. Just watch the original

This review was copy-pasted from the last cheap remake Disney made. If they insist on being so lazy, I don't see why I should bother doing more than the bare minimum either...

And that would be fine if they were as good or better. But they aren't. I have no problem with changing the race of the characters. Hell, I don't care if you stick a half Mongolian/half Jamaican in the role. If they can act and do the role justice then have at it. And Halle Bailey does a decent job in an otherwise meh movie. But I have one huge problem. Unless that hair is flaming red then she ain't Ariel. Sorry, but when it comes to something this iconic you don't change the iconic thing. And no, that hair is not red. Not properly anyway.

And don't get me started on the abominations that are Sebastian and Flounder. They're just made of wrongness. Flounder is probably the main victim. And on that note. This has some of the worst CG I've seen. Disney movies are really starting to loook like low-budget trash. What's clear from this and other recent Disney remakes (and let's be honest, most of their recent movies), Disney has lost its magic. In the interest of preserving what's left of my fond childhood Disney memories I'll be ignoring any remakes from here on in.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A nonsense and unnecessary live action. Terrible casting by the way. The race ''diversity'' doesn't make sense sometimes. Triton is polygamist, his daughters are all from different races. Ursula is the pretty one, Eric's mother is black but Eric is white. And of course, the protagonist's absurd race swapping from white to black obviously to promote Halle Bailey's career. She can be sweet sometimes during the film, but she's definitely not Ariel. Her acting feels forced and fake in order to fit a character she never fit into from the very beginning. The CGI sometimes looks good, but most times looks horrible. The animals are not funny at all, and all the comedy that the original movie had got lost. In general, this film does not have anything new to add up to the same formula and falls far short of its animated counterpart. Expand

It is an insult to the original fairy tale, which was a beautiful and tragic story of love and sacrifice. The movie is a mess of plot holes, contradictions and nonsense that makes no sense at all. The characters are stupid and annoying, especially the main character Ariel, who is a spoiled and stupid mermaid who trades her voice and her soul for a pair of legs and a prince who doesn’t even know her name. The animation is ugly and cheap, the songs are irritating and forgettable, and the villain Ursula is a pathetic copy of Maleficent. The movie has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and it is a disgrace to the art of animation and storytelling. The Little Mermaid is a terrible movie that should be banned from existence. Expand

movie too dark
in original version Eric help ariel to impale ursula, but Disney change it to ariel cause a VERY OBVIOUS REASON. eric needs help all the time.

The CGI is terrible with actual divergences, suggesting that when it was baked there were system issues, and no one cared. They just shipped it with encoding issue. Unnecessary changes to characters…
Such a dark and gloomy world compared to original ad well? I don’t understand that direction.

The lead actress had a great voice but terrible casting choice. She simply doesn’t fit the part from the Ariel we all grew up with. Re-imagine something les iconic next time.

Also the cgi is an abomination.
Run time was way too long.
Also I can’t stand Melissa McCarthy anymore.

These new remakes are not helping or getting things any better for the company. The Little Mermaid (2023) is absolutely unnecessary, soulless, hollow and colorless. Halle Bailey's acting was not bad, but definetely feels forced, overacted and too theatrical most times. Ursula doesn't feel like Ursula. The GCI sometimes looks fair, but most times look terrible. The new songs don't seem to fit in the whole film concept. And of course, not to mention the feminist agenda behind this product, which is really pathetic considering this was a movie that was supposed to be made for kids. My wife is a huge, life long fan of the little mermaid. To the point that she has a tattoo of the original. She wanted to walk out of the movie less than half way through. She (and I) were disappointed by the story changes, the unnecessary changes to songs/new songs, the CGI, the acting and more. The CGI was bland, the acting stiff and lifeless, they destroyed the supporting characters, they changed Ariel from a young woman who was curious and excited about the world outside, but was taken advantage of and needed to overcome the unknown to now being a girl boss who doesn't need any help, knows how to do anything/everything, and has an "I'm better than you" attitude. I'd say save your money, but what do I know? Expand

Not only Ariel but also Eric lost the charm they used to have in the animation version. The actor, with his glazed eyes, seemed willing to act as a love-smitten prince in every second he appears, which Eric does not. He totally lacks masculinity, quick-wittedness and the energy Eric has. And what’s more? Halle Bailey’s acting is so weak and unconvincing. I don’t care her singing. I’m watching a movie and all I want is good acting. Her appearance certainly has nothing relevant to Ariel but I always hoped that her acting could somehow save it and bring me round but no, it is worse than what you can imagine. A lifeless Ariel, a cringe romance with Eric. What Disney has done to my all-time favorite Little Mermaid is unacceptable! Expand

If they would have just released a little mermaid soundtrack with Halle Bailey, that would have been enough. She’s cute, seems very kind, and has a beautiful voice. Hopefully she isn’t wasted anymore on Disney. They don’t have original ideas anymore, and recycle old ones and try to put new spins on those ideas hoping the public will buy them again. Why not make a brand new little mermaid movie, or something completely different, to showcase Halle instead of throwing together a live action with poor cgi? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched the original cartoon 13x as a preteen. I have no issues with the casting and love the diversity, but it’s really so BORING. How can it be boring when they just copied the cartoon? Sure, they added some backstory but not enough backstory like they did with Maleficent. Ursula was bad for no reason. Melissa McCarthy tried to ad lib some 3 words to make it her own but she still ended up so boring. How can Ursula be boring? Sebastian also is BORING compared to the funny cartoon one. Maybe because he looks like a tasty crab with no facial reactions but his expression and singing were so bland. Regarding the mor developed love story, yeah sure… Ariel and Eric are made for each other — they’re both hoarders, hate their parents, and escapist reckless adventurers who got their families in big trouble. Whoopee. Yep, we should teach our kids to be like those two. I was looking forward to the diversity under the sea. The daughters of Triton representing the 7 seas were magnificent and I love how my Asian sea was represented. But that’s just 20 seconds? Ok maybe 30. But then again, Disney teaching me to be woke is all about that lecture? I mean, the ocean has way undiscovered species with fish of different colors and creatures. Why should the merpeople represent the way surface dwellers are represented? Shouldn’t there be merpeople whose skins are blue or yellow? Can’t those fish also be represented just like they did in Aquaman? A little thing with diversity - yes it’s great and appreciated. But there’s this part where forcing it and lecturing the world about it when we’re supposed to enjoy a movie makes it lose its message. I loved Halle Bailey’s voice and performance but with Ursula, Sebastian and Scuttle all acting soooo sleepy, the Prince acting like he’s always on edge, etc. These things really don’t get me to think it’s a good updated tribute to the original. By the way, Disney, if all your live action remakes are just copies of the cartoon, why even do it? This is the opportunity to retell the story with new eyes and even provide a backstory we didn’t know, just like you did with Maleficent. You missed an opportunity with Cate Blanchett in Cinderella (Gregory Maguire did a better backstory.) Now you missed this with Ursula. You could’ve given her some moments about why she was banished or became an outcast. She ended up with just being evil for no reason. So if these are all we will expect from Disney’s live action, let’s just watch the cartoon. Expand

The latest in Disney's attempt to cash in on all their old IPs instead of making something new and original has finally hit the screens and it's not great.

A far cry from the bright captivating colors of the original, this ocean is dark and muted. Have the animators even visited a coral reef before? Or are they just trying to hide imperfect CGI by just turning down the color and brightness? Perhaps they should watch Avatar 2 to see how to do a stunning live action underwater world right. The live action aspect actively hurts the film due to making the non-human characters unexpressive at best, uncanny valley at worst.

The run time is bloated, and although they have added some extra things in to fill the time, you kind of wish on the whole that they didn't. The rap song is particularly bad and doesn't feel like it fits at all with the rest of the music in the film.

Halle can certainly sing, but that's just not enough by itself to save this movie. Like many of Disney's remakes that have gone before, there's no particular reason for this live action remake to exist apart from being nostalgia bait. A low effort way to try and reel audiences in rather than making something shiny and new. Give it a miss and watch the original instead.

Another live action remake that sullies the original to an unwatchable state.

Ariel no longer has her famous red hair, it is now a very dull orange. The actress playing her has an absolutely beatiful voice but again it is not Ariel because she looks like an iguana with eyes on different sides of her face. They made Halle change the iconic notes and melodies of the original songs so they sound very off and displeasing to the ears.

They have also removed many of the beloved original songs and replaced them with horrid "originals" that never should have made it past the discussion phase. After the atrocious gender changing of Scuttle they even went a step further and added one of the worst "raps" to ever be recorded that has nothing to do with the tone of the rest of the movie and every single person and child in the theater around me I could see had a grimace of contempt being forced to listen to it, so disrespectful to the original and it just would not end. Who thought The Little Mermaid needed a friggin' rap song? No one wanted or needed it and it completely takes you out of the movie. Several adults even walked out during it because of how terrible the entire scene was. No one I've spoken to about this remake of TLM has said a positive word about that entirely too long scene, so whoever gave that the go ahead needs to never be allowed to make discissions involving music in movies ever again.

The CGI and graphic effects don't look like they belong to a multi billion dollar company, they look out-sourced to a studio that gave the lowest bid. Everything is so dark and brooding looking when the original was bright and colourful.

Beloved characters like Flouder and Sebastian look like cheap mutant abominations that take away the magic from the original cartoon. This is a major part of why all of these remakes (besides Cinderella) have been horrible because they all have destroyed the magic of the originals because they take classic story paces away and add awful things in their place which not a single person enjoys and only hurts the good will hey have built up over the decades.

They even ruined Ursula and her eels because of the cheap CGI and atrocious make-up they gave to poor Melissa McCarthy. She is the ONLY person in the entire cast that actually seems like they want to be there and putting their best acting foot forward but unfortunately she cannot carry the entire movie since her appearance doesn't last long enough so we are left with the rest of the mediocre cast for far too long. I have never seen Javier Bardem look so bored and over a movie like he looks in this, like he just looks like he cannot wait to go home he just seems so bored.

They made Triton and Ursula related in this movie which was the only positive edition considering they took that out of the original TLM, however not a single character in this TLM look related at all. Melissa looks nothing like Javier, Halle looks nothing like either of them. Prince Eric doesn't even look like he's from the same part of the world as the rest of the cast let alone the actress playing his mother. I don't understand how you have an entire movie based around family drama where none of the characters even look remotely related at all. I genuinely do not understand how all of these horrid changes got greenlit unless it was done completely on purpose to drive up internet conversation about how they wholly destroyed another beloved classic in their catalogue. Someone once said "all attention is good attention" but this remake of TLM proves that it is absolutely not the case. They even had to ruin the ending to the original. Virtually none of the amazing aspects from the orginal still exist here outside of 'poor unfortunate souls' because of all the completely awful and unnessesary changes that were made for some inane reason.

The only surprise I found enjoyable was the 30 second cameo from Jodi Benson (original Ariel voice) but of course even though she's a stellar actress they couldn't even give her a decent part. It would've been so much better if she was cast as Eric's mother so you could at least pretend that Eric was actually RELATED to the person playing his mum.

I beg Disney to stop dancing on the corpse of my already dead childhood. These movies were the only thing as a severely bullied child that kept me going because they showed me everything would get better "you just have to get past the rough patches". All of these unnessesary remakes are retroactively runing the only solace I had as a child and I am so very disappointed that they continue to destroy everything they touch from cartoons to Star Wars to video games. Please stop ruining my childhood.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This monstrosity is not an adaptation but a distorted vision of people who try to forcefully throw ideology into everything. The plot makes no sense - why is Ariel's father supposed to convince himself of the people - who, according to this version, killed his wife and Ariel's mother, when all the work in the finale is done by our little mermaid? That was the point of the original - the prince showed that he was worthy of a little mermaid despite the fact that he is "only" human. But of course, the screenwriters' delusions must be stronger than the positive message of the original. Expand

Their scant regard for the foundational work begs the question: why recreate, when you could create anew? This adaptation is shrouded in an unexpected gloom, and the computer-generated effects have crossed the border from subpar to downright eerie. The leap from animated whimsy to live-action reality falls short in ways that words struggle to encompass.

The alterations to the iconic musical score instigate more discomfort than nostalgia, and the plot revisions, aimed to please a presumed "contemporary audience," only serve to dilute the movie's essence. Moreover, the film's inflated length feels more like an unnecessary filler than meaningful narrative expansion.

This latest offering emerges as a lackluster imitation of the initial masterpiece, with its existence posing more questions than providing answers. You would be better off conserving your resources and simply re-experiencing the original's timeless magic.
