This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Ah, the disappointment of seeing beloved characters undergo drastic changes. It's frustrating when filmmakers deviate too far from the essence of the original characters for no good reason other than appease the current political climate. IAh, the disappointment of seeing beloved characters undergo drastic changes. It's frustrating when filmmakers deviate too far from the essence of the original characters for no good reason other than appease the current political climate. I can appreciate somebody trying to make an honest dime but talk about sell-out.
I had high hopes for this movie, but sadly, the changes made to the characters were just too much to handle. It felt like they completely disregarded what made these characters special and turned them into unrecognizable versions of themselves. It was a disservice to the fans who grew up with these characters and invested their love and admiration. The new interpretations lacked the charm, depth, and relatability that made the originals so captivating. It's a shame when a movie prioritizes unnecessary changes over honoring the source material and the fans who made it a success.

They tried to empower Ariel to be this self-sufficient feminist version of herself at the cost to Eric and their relationship. The magic was lost in everything from the ship fist fight between Ursula and Ariel (as opposed to the sea animals helping), taking away Eric's role in the finale by killing Ursula and saving Ariel (now she's self sufficient and does that on her own), Eric not finding Ariel on the beach and that magic moment between them with the initial sparks, hell Eric even tries to kiss her on the boat and she moves away from him and switches to the other side of the boat. There is zero chemistry what so ever. I have never been so disappointed in a movie. The original is my absolute to this day and I feel as if this version butchered it and all the magic. The female "gannet" who replaced Skuttle has the most absolute annoying voice I have ever heard and it doesn't help when she raps her songs. Prince Eric being adopted into a Caribbean island also is so unrealistic and unnecessary. Halle does have a nice voice but her acting and facial expressions are awful. It was a very long movie, with many added songs, all not great and not needed. They really went ahead and butchered the original. All these sites won't even allow you to have a negative opinion on the movie or "you're racist" and all the ratings are censored. Expand

There are so many reasons I hate this movie but here are my main ones:

Bailey is not a good fit for the role and her singing voice is not strong enough.

I hate the lack of originality: The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is very similar to the animated film. The plot, characters, and songs are all the same, and there is very little that is new or innovative about the remake. This makes me feel that the remake is unnecessary and that Disney is just trying to cash in on the nostalgia of the original film.

The abysmal CGI: The CGI in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is very poor. I could dust off an old Amiga computer and create more realistic CGI. The sea creatures look totally fake and unnatural, and the underwater scenes are often blurry and hard to see. This makes the film look dirt cheap and amateurish, and it takes away from the overall experience.

The lack of emotion: The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid lacks emotion. The characters are often wooden and unconvincing, and the story fails to elicit any real emotional response from the audience. This makes the film feel flat and lifeless, and it ultimately disappointed me. I was expecting much better.

In short: Watching seamonkeys is more interesting than that ill attempt of a movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mixed feelings after watching this movie. Let's put aside the fact that Disney doesn't know how to make movies anymore, let's put aside the fact that Disney has gone from the original concept of the movie by stuffing a lot of controversial changes into it that obviously hurt the movie's ratings. These are Disney's mistakes that they themselves made, for which they themselves are to blame. Let's continue ... As for me, the bias towards the realism of the underwater world is not the best idea, Flounder is an example of this. There are too many songs in the film and only half of them are of good quality. After listening to 2 songs, the third song will just get boring. As my friends said: the main character's acting is bad. The ending of the new little mermaid in my opinion is not canon. I don't even know what I like about the piece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I promise, this is not brigading…I actually paid to watch this crap! The Little Mermaid is definitely not the worst live-action Disney remake but it is the most frustrating by far. It is a mess of differing tones, great cgi mixed with laughably atrocious cgi, over-acting mixed with wooden acting. This movie doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Tone - starts off as visually darker, more gritty, and more realistic (the sea life looks and acts like they’re real.) Missing a few of the musical numbers from the beginning of the animated film, but then halfway jumps to bright, vibrant cartoonish colors and lighting and haphazardly goes from one song straight into another. They even gave Scuttle the bird (voiced by Awkafina) a freaking RAP. And all the musical numbers have that annoying sing-talk-sing-talk formula.

CGI - underwater elements looks good, except the characters themselves. Hair sometimes sways with the ocean, sometimes it looks like a helmet. When characters are fully computer generated, their faces look like bad deepfake (there’s one scene with Ariel near the end of the film where it doesnt even look like she has pupils). The finale with giant Ursula is so dark it was obvious that it was intentional to cover up the laughable cgi. Acting - Halley Bailey was usually good (sometimes overacting though) in scenes by herself, but has awful and blank reaction shots whenever anyone is talking to her. Melissa McCarthy is understandably hammy with her overacting to the point where she wouldn’t be out of place in a bad off-off-Broadway production. (For Venture Bros fans out there, she sounds EXACTLY like Red Mantle.) All of Ariel’s sisters are wooden that they give Gal Gadot a run for her money. Akwafina was Akwafina. Prince Eric guy was okay, but his performance made me wonder why this movie has five different accents in one region…British, American, Spanish, Caribbean, and New Orleans??

So why did I waste my time and money on this turd? I was excited to go to a movie theater with my kid, who is four. My kid has that new glimmer of excitement when I ask if they want to see a movie in a theater! But it is very telling how bad a movie is when your four year old says it’s, “kinda okay”.

Ariel was already a girl boss in the original, like she knows what she wants and pursues it, girly making a move on a prince! that's already badass but nah they had to destroy a healthy relationship of two people helping, saving each other, and being there for each other. God forbid It seems like these days you're not considered badass and Girl boss if you want to find romance and want to build a healthy relationship with another person no matter how amazing of a woman you are. I also didn't get the nostalgic factor that I was hoping for, the visual is BORING and DREARY, her hair, the surroundings, and everything is so DISAPPOINTING. Expand

English:

A cinematic disaster without redemption

It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to share my thoughts on one of the worst movies I have had the misfortune to witness in a long time. The Little Mermaid is an unredeemable cinematic disaster that has managed to exhaust my patience and test my ability to resist mediocrity.

From the first minutes of projection, it was evident that the plot lacked originality and coherence. The story unfolds predictably, without offering any surprising twists or moments of interest that could save it from the abyss into which it is plunging ever deeper. The dialogues are bland and lacking in depth, leaving the characters as empty, one-dimensional stereotypes.

The new songs are Encanto 2.0, the only adition or change to the plot I loved was the "explanation" of why Ariel fell in love or got interested in Eric. that was a really nice touch. And... Why Vanessa was white? the idea of ursula becoming Vanessa to trick Eric was to imitate Ariel, therefore she should have look like Ariel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well i'll be the must objetive here. Its not the best movie out there but it isnt the worst neither. The cgi is the worst part, nothing looks real except the animals that talk (flounder, sebastian and Scuttle). Those 3 give too much cringe specially flounder and Scuttle. Also the rap between Scuttle and sebastian is the worst song in the movie, unbearable. The acting is passable, Bailey isnt as great as they want us to think but she does her job. Sometimes she has the same flat face (specially when she doesnt have voice). Ursula isnt as intimidating as the ursula from the original movie, she is supposed to be a sea witch monsters and McCarthy isnt intimidating. The New songs are passable also (except the rap) but giving Ariel another song while she doesnt have voice is ridiculous like they put it just to make Bailey sing another song. Unfortunately, this movie lacks the charm and magic of the original 1989 movie. Some scenes are way to dark and colorless. The fact that Éric is adopted is illogical and isnt explored more deeply, is just like they made it like that to justify making her mother black. Also the diversity in Triton's daughters are justified vaguely even if they explain that all the daughters have the same mother, illogical. In conclusion not the worst but not the best, is just another mediocre Disney live action that doesnt compare with the original movie. Expand

In spite of its best efforts, The Little Mermaid still manages to fall flat on its face with few elements holding it up. I am very worried for Halle Bailey, due to how much pain her back must be in for carrying this mess on her back.

Carbon copy of the original film with some filler here in there. Halle Bailey shines as Ariel, but everything else is dull and uninspiring. Will Disney ever learn that photorealistic animals don't convey any emotions?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, an actual review here in this sea of tears from 30-year-old 4 chan crybabies. I watched the animated one a couple of days ago to refresh my memory, and I can say this movie is an actual good adaptation from the recent Disney live-action wave.

As a pro, Halle is a good Ariel; her songs have some eeriness in them. In general his voice is very good, Prince Eric was also kinda decent, as was Ursula. Triton having one daughter per sea is something I found funny because he is the nephew of Zeus. All the underwater animations are fascinating. I really admire whoever animated Ariel's hair, tail, and all those animals from the "Under the Sea" song. I liked the Sebastian redesign; the old one was weird. Flounder, on the other hand, was very unappealing, and I wish his eyes were different.

There was one song that was obviously written by Lin-Manuel Miranda that I really disliked, though. I wish that song wasn't in the movie. The final Ursula fight was maybe the poorest part in terms of visuals, but again, making a giant octopus 3D lady must be hard.

I don't like the Disney live-action movies; they are usually bad, like "Alice in Wonderland" or "The Jungle Book." But I liked this one, and I think the kids will love this movie. Plugging this movie into the Moist Meter, I'll give it an 8 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is not as bad as I imagined, it could be better without some laceration points (Wolk), the character's ethnicity and the smallest of problems, it had everything to be the best live action since Cinderella, but let's get to the point if this one If the film was not set in 1830, I would not complain about the exchange of ethnicities, but I have to take into account the time that has passed, there were no other ethnicities besides white at that time, according to how a triton had 7 daughters with different ethnicities with the same woman, only it could be cuckold , third making Ariel not know that she has to kiss the prince , fourth the changes in the songs some changed the meaning of the story to seem feminist and the last point because the prince didn't save Ariel at the end of the movie and Ariel saves him in the original movie and he reciprocates at the end of the movie, it changed the meaning of her father changing his opinion about humans because of him if it weren't for those points the movie would have 5 stars and would be the best live action version since Cinderella... not to say that this movie didn't improve anything, the prince was the best part of the movie and the music he got gave more depth to the character and has some tributes to the classic, it's certainly better many live action released from 2019 to here and too better than Peter Pan and Wendy!!! My kid loved the movie (also the 1989 version - so she knows them both) and that is more than enough for me (but having a stupid right-wing-crowd feeling obligated to review-bomb while peeing their pants and getting a stroke is a nice bonus, I might add). If this is woke, then by all means being non woke apparently means hating children - specifically your own. And if your kids are getting "confused" (by what?) then it is not their fault or Disney's but their parents.

This movie exceeded all of my expectations. From the stunning visuals to the captivating new but familiar plot, this movie truly has it all.
The underwater scenes were absolutely gorgeous, and the clothes, hair, makeup, and places were incredibly well done. It truly felt like I was transported into that magical world.
I was particularly impressed with the way the directors were able to modernize the story while still staying somewhat true to the original. Even though I lowkey missed some parts from the animated version, I absolutely enjoyed and loved the new additions here. And its commitment to diversity. The cast is refreshingly diverse, featuring actors from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. This not only adds an important element of representation to the film but also makes the story feel more authentic and inclusive. And of course, I have to give a special shoutout to Halle Bailey's singing voice. She absolutely nailed every song in the movie, bringing a fresh and modern take to some classic tunes. Her voice is so ethereal. Her rendition of "Part of Your World" and even her version of "Vanessa's Trick" gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.
Overall, I would highly recommend The Little Mermaid to anyone looking for a new, visually stunning, engaging, and diverse movie that will capture your heart from beginning to end. Diversity and inclusion are never bad when done properly, it doesn't affect the plot or character here, different versions can exist, and we can choose our favorite and ignore the others.

There are no surprises, no changes in the formula and, therefore, it's more of the same. This is the recipe that Disney has decided to apply in all the live-action remakes of its animated classics.
True, there have been some worse than others, but The Little Mermaid is far from that, and yet it is the most controversial film of them all.

I don't want to touch too much on that subject, but it's relevant to do so for the simple reason that there are millions of people who won't give a **** about anything else in the movie, they'll just notice that the lead actress has dark skin. It's disgusting, but it's part of a much bigger cancer than just a movie. One thing I can tell you is that, if you're a person with enough brains to see beyond that, The Little Mermaid is precisely the film it wanted to be.
The music and its production values are on point and Halle Bailey, captures the spirit of the character by making it her own in her own personal way.
It may not be the best that can be done in terms of adaptations, but it's not the disaster that many were predicting just because. This is a system product and therefore everything moves inside a box but there are levels of quality within that system and The Little Mermaid is not a failure in those terms.
It's a regular, average and inconsequential movie, but for its intended audience, and by that I mean children, I think they'll enjoy it. And of course, you can argue again about the reason for their existence, as well as the rest of the remakes Disney has made in this line, but I think it should be pretty clear by now that they have no interest in stopping making them no matter how much some people complain. And no, the animated classics are not ruined. The damn movies are still there 100% available.
If you don't like remakes there's always the option of not watching them, you know?

This is a passable effort, but there's not all that much to write home about. Like pretty much all other ones of its kind, this live-action remake doesn't really justify its own existence. However, this also never breaches into the level of offensiveness as something like Guy Ritchie's "Aladdin" or Jon Favreau's "The Lion King." The performances from Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy are to be commended and I'm sure kids all over will get a kick out of at least a couple elements within. Beyond that, though, I'm just not sure what else I'm supposed to get out of this. It's not better than the original. The bits they added vary from forgettable to "man, I wish I could forget that," but there's still not enough new here to leave me with the impression that they were actually trying in their attempts to remake this. Again, not necessarily "bad" in any particular way, just middling, in my opinion. Expand
