However, I have to say that this movie is not for kids. I was scared of this "little mermaid" frightened me several times during the watching. I don't care about skin color, but why didn't they choose a beautiful actress? A good actor does not need to be a singer, and in other languages, the singing is anyway translated. Who would print a big screen of this "little mermaid" to hang in their rooms for kids? I guess no one. Expand

The sidekicks are really plain characters. Melissa McCarthy tried to imitate a drag queen.

The new songs are Encanto 2.0, the only adition or change to the plot I loved was the "explanation" of why Ariel fell in love or got interested in Eric. that was a really nice touch. And... Why Vanessa was white? the idea of ursula becoming Vanessa to trick Eric was to imitate Ariel, therefore she should have look like Ariel.

One has to wonder what this cast could have done with an original IP with a different director and Avatar-like visuals. Some baffling narrative choices water down (pun intended) the script. Watch the original instead.

English:

A cinematic disaster without redemption

It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to share my thoughts on one of the worst movies I have had the misfortune to witness in a long time. The Little Mermaid is an unredeemable cinematic disaster that has managed to exhaust my patience and test my ability to resist mediocrity.

From the first minutes of projection, it was evident that the plot lacked originality and coherence. The story unfolds predictably, without offering any surprising twists or moments of interest that could save it from the abyss into which it is plunging ever deeper. The dialogues are bland and lacking in depth, leaving the characters as empty, one-dimensional stereotypes.

The script is sub par and the direction is uninspired. The film's visuals are also underwhelming, with the underwater scenes lacking the vibrant color and energy of the animated film.
The biggest problem with the remake is that it feels like a paint-by-numbers retread of the original. The story is the same, the songs are the same, and even the characters are the same. Anything new (music, scenes) is total garbage. There is nothing new or exciting to be found here, and the film quickly becomes a tedious and predictable affair.

The film completely butchered the beloved original and took away all the magic and charm. The casting choices were terrible, and the performances fell flat. The lead actress lacked the captivating presence needed to bring Ariel to life. And don't even get me started on the revamped storyline. It felt forced and pandering, trying too hard to be politically correct without staying true to the essence of the original tale.

Moreover, the visuals were underwhelming. The CGI felt cheap and poorly executed, failing to create a captivating underwater world. The musical numbers were lackluster, lacking the energy and memorable melodies that made the original songs so iconic. It felt like a soulless cash-grab, devoid of the heart and enchantment that made the original film a timeless classic. Overall, the new Little Mermaid fell flat on every level, and it's a shame to witness such a disappointing and uninspiring rendition of a beloved story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched the original cartoon 13x as a preteen. I have no issues with the casting and love the diversity, but it’s really so BORING. How can it be boring when they just copied the cartoon? Sure, they added some backstory but not enough backstory like they did with Maleficent. Ursula was bad for no reason. Melissa McCarthy tried to ad lib some 3 words to make it her own but she still ended up so boring. How can Ursula be boring? Sebastian also is BORING compared to the funny cartoon one. Maybe because he looks like a tasty crab with no facial reactions but his expression and singing were so bland. Regarding the mor developed love story, yeah sure… Ariel and Eric are made for each other — they’re both hoarders, hate their parents, and escapist reckless adventurers who got their families in big trouble. Whoopee. Yep, we should teach our kids to be like those two. I was looking forward to the diversity under the sea. The daughters of Triton representing the 7 seas were magnificent and I love how my Asian sea was represented. But that’s just 20 seconds? Ok maybe 30. But then again, Disney teaching me to be woke is all about that lecture? I mean, the ocean has way undiscovered species with fish of different colors and creatures. Why should the merpeople represent the way surface dwellers are represented? Shouldn’t there be merpeople whose skins are blue or yellow? Can’t those fish also be represented just like they did in Aquaman? A little thing with diversity - yes it’s great and appreciated. But there’s this part where forcing it and lecturing the world about it when we’re supposed to enjoy a movie makes it lose its message. I loved Halle Bailey’s voice and performance but with Ursula, Sebastian and Scuttle all acting soooo sleepy, the Prince acting like he’s always on edge, etc. These things really don’t get me to think it’s a good updated tribute to the original. By the way, Disney, if all your live action remakes are just copies of the cartoon, why even do it? This is the opportunity to retell the story with new eyes and even provide a backstory we didn’t know, just like you did with Maleficent. You missed an opportunity with Cate Blanchett in Cinderella (Gregory Maguire did a better backstory.) Now you missed this with Ursula. You could’ve given her some moments about why she was banished or became an outcast. She ended up with just being evil for no reason. So if these are all we will expect from Disney’s live action, let’s just watch the cartoon. Expand

My wife is a huge, life long fan of the little mermaid. To the point that she has a tattoo of the original. She wanted to walk out of the movie less than half way through. She (and I) were disappointed by the story changes, the unnecessary changes to songs/new songs, the CGI, the acting and more. The CGI was bland, the acting stiff and lifeless, they destroyed the supporting characters, they changed Ariel from a young woman who was curious and excited about the world outside, but was taken advantage of and needed to overcome the unknown to now being a girl boss who doesn't need any help, knows how to do anything/everything, and has an "I'm better than you" attitude. So I'm just going to write a simple review Now.

The film is long, agonizing, Dark and Painful to the source material of the original film. Please do not waste your money here on this film, I gave it a 4 and then after it sunk in I gave it a 3.
I am fair towards all films and do not simply bomb a film with a 0.

Meta Critic, Do not remove my review Or I will post this in its place.
I will update this review later from memory.

Javier Bardem?? Wtf bro.

Halle Bailey? Why. I actually feel sorry for her as she has to carry the weight of this abomination for the rest of time.

The CGI is horrid despite being the biggest spend and at some points I felt it was way too dark literally and written for kids to enjoy.

This is another notch in Disney's belt that says they just need to stop.

If you're curious, go see it but try and not spend money doing so. The cinema was empty when I went bar a family at the front and even the kids seemed disinterested.

Songs were rewritten because they no longer seem contemporary. This film winks at Ednie who has nothing to do with the original. Poor CGI little color except for the actors. And Triton also seems to have had his fun with all the mermaids around the globe, because Ariel's sisters are apparently Asian, African, German, Nordic, etc. Where even the woke nonsense doesn't even make sense. You should really watch Arielle with an open mind because the actors are convincing in the end. But anyone who knows Arielle could not identify with it from childhood. Expand

So, where to begin? For those who still thinks, this is racism based cause the main actress which was chosen is a black woman.
It's a BIG NO, you're wrong.

It's because Disney ruined memories, demandings and trample on the original. If anyone really think, it's because she is black is blatantly wrong. Furthermore the decision, that is clearly made on a woke base, is just wrong. Politics should NEVER have an impact on an original.

Facts: If Disney really wanted to be an woke ambassador, why not creating (and risking) a black mermaid on a brand new name? Thats the second thing, why this remake deserves the flop status. No one would care about Halle Bailey as a Mermaid. People care because Disney used expactions from the name Arielle. Create new male or female heroes, even trans or black, wouldn't create that outcome.

When you have zero respect for the original, you get what you deserve.
Not true? Let's take a look at The witcher when Henry left, let's take a look at the Witcher spin off, and also the Rings of Power.
I swear to god disney, if you ruin the Frozen Movies or The Fox and the Hound i will never ever touch anything again related to your company. Than you give more about politics than creativity.

I didn’t enjoy this movie or ANY of the changes they made to the original story, the music was disappointing, the casting was misguided at best, dialogue below mediocre. I wanted to give it a fair shot, like I have all the live action remakes and every time I’m shocked at how bad they are. I set my bar pretty low and Disney somehow manages to undershoot by miles. Just stop, stop ruining everything and focus on creating good/new stories. I still believe you’re capable of it, despite all evidence to the contrary. To be honest I wanted to give it a zero out of 10 but that wouldn’t be fair. I’m sure most of the people including the cast worked very hard on this, it’s not their fault it was a massively disappointing mess. Expand

Hopefully she isn’t wasted anymore on Disney. They don’t have original ideas anymore, and recycle old ones and try to put new spins on those ideas hoping the public will buy them again. While the production values are commendable and the cinematography captures the beauty of the underwater world, the storytelling feels lackluster and fails to evoke the same emotional depth as its predecessor.

The casting is fine for the most part, but casting Halle Bailey as Ariel is enough to justify that the live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" would be nominated not for an Oscar, but for next year's Razzie Awards. Ultimately, this rendition of "The Little Mermaid" leaves much to be desired, failing to recreate the magic and wonder that made the original tale resonate with audiences of all ages. Therefore, Disney should have no other choice but to remake the movie again by re-casting Ariel completely from scratch and leaving the rest intact.

And giving a nod with the quote at the start to Hans Christian Andersen truly made my heart soar!
As a lifelong fan of The Little Mermaid, it was the FIRST film I remember seeing in theaters with my Father and family.
This was everything I could have ever asked for from one of my most beloved films; a film that inspired me from the tender age of 5 when it first came out - a film that showed that love overcomes all, imagination and faith can make anything possible and that anyone can become a part of the world they wish for with just a little effort, hope, and ambition.
Halle Bailey; you did such a great job bringing Ariel to life. Thank you for playing this role with such beautiful finesse and bringing one of my favorite princesses to life with perfect execution!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Best live action remake from Disney by far, it's a faithful adaptation of the original, with its core story and message being respected, but with little additions here and there. The main characters' personalities and motifs are shown more in depth; Prince Eric actually has a personality and a reason to fall in love with Ariel, since they have many things in common, and that for me solves the biggest downside of the original. Their relationship developes in a much nicer and more believable way than in the original, and even if they had to lengthen it by a lot to achieve this, it's not a boring movie. Underwater scenes were less nice-looking than others, but overall good CGI and cinematography. The animals' design and animation actually don't look bad after a few minutes into their scenes as they do in promotional media, only exception being Flounder. Their characters are well intepretated and deliver good comedic relief. Very good acting from almost everyone and very good music scenes, also didn't mind the new ones. Everything feels believable (as much as mermaids can feel believable) and it doesn't feel like they're pushing any agenda. I don't really see issues with the different ethnicities as the movie is set in the Caribbean and it is explained that Eric was adopted, which is why he is the only white character in the movie. Although they could have pushed a bit more on the creative side and with Ursula's character, as a huge fan of the original I'd definitely recommend watching, unlike almost every other remake by Disney in recent years.
