Some of the underwater effects are not great and the visual aesthetic is nothing special. The new songs do not blend well with the old ones, making them incredibly obvious when it is their turn. That said, Halle Bailey is great and her chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King is worth watching. Melissa McCarthy is also making the most of the role and is having a blast as Ursula. Expand

Comparing to the original animated movie, the original little mermaid movie has more life to it than the remake live action is. Part of the scene where Ursula said about calling Ariel as Red. This is the fluke that Disney made which I am looking where is Red. There was no Red. The song that Prince Eric sang was boring.

2nd fluke that Disney made is that braided hair won't last underwater. It is very unrealistic.

This remake managed to be worse than peter pan, it feels completely uninspired and just another cash grab by disney. They changed many aspects that made the original feel magical and left us with a steaming pile of excrement. The characters are like hollow shells of their animated counterparts, the make up and costume design was poor, and the CGI was not up to par with modern standards. Expand

And that would be fine if they were as good or better. But they aren't. I have no problem with changing the race of the characters. Hell, I don't care if you stick a half Mongolian/half Jamaican in the role. If they can act and do the role justice then have at it. And Halle Bailey does a decent job in an otherwise meh movie. But I have one huge problem. Unless that hair is flaming red then she ain't Ariel. Sorry, but when it comes to something this iconic you don't change the iconic thing. And no, that hair is not red. Not properly anyway.

And don't get me started on the abominations that are Sebastian and Flounder. They're just made of wrongness. Flounder is probably the main victim. And on that note. This has some of the worst CG I've seen. Disney movies are really starting to loook like low-budget trash. What's clear from this and other recent Disney remakes (and let's be honest, most of their recent movies), Disney has lost its magic. In the interest of preserving what's left of my fond childhood Disney memories I'll be ignoring any remakes from here on in.

A Disappointing Dive: The Little Mermaid (2023)

The newly-released 2023 adaptation of The Little Mermaid sadly does not live up to the rich, timeless charm of its animated predecessor. It is heartbreaking to watch a classic piece of Disney nostalgia be reimagined in such an uninspiring manner, underscoring an unfortunate trend of unnecessary remakes that fail to capture the original's magic.

One of the primary drawbacks is the palpable political agenda that seems to be thrust upon the viewers. While social commentary has always had its place in film and can often serve as an insightful critique of the times, it becomes problematic when it supersedes the narrative itself. The Little Mermaid (2023) demonstrates this issue profoundly. Instead of maintaining the light-hearted adventure and emotionally rich story that fans adored, the movie diverts into an overly didactic discourse that feels more like a lecture than an immersive fairy tale.

Moreover, the pure essence of the original, its innocence and simplicity, have been discarded. The end result is a story that feels strained and disjointed, straying from the beautiful narrative that originally enchanted audiences worldwide.

Regrettably, attending the screening was a moment of remorse. The film seemed to lack the genuine heart and soul that made the original a timeless masterpiece. Instead, it presented a diluted and somewhat distorted version of a tale we held dear. It's disheartening when a revisit to childhood nostalgia results in such disenchantment.

Finally, it's worth noting that even platforms like Metacritic are unable to disguise the general dissatisfaction of audiences. Unlike some review aggregating sites that may be criticized for obscuring user ratings, Metacritic reflects a more accurate consensus - revealing a substantial discrepancy between the critics' reviews and audience scores. This divergence indicates a clear discord between what critics value and the viewers' perception of the film, particularly those viewers familiar with the 1989 classic.

In summary, The Little Mermaid (2023) is a regrettable cinematic experience, overshadowed by an intrusive political agenda and a significant departure from the beloved original. The beauty of the timeless classic is, unfortunately, lost in this latest adaptation.

The CGI of the film is really bad for 250 M budget, strange and many times it gave me the feeling that the main actress had her head on someone else's trunk, looking more dry inside de water than outside. MUSIC: in the song "Part of your world" the actress makes an abrupt intonation (Beyonce´s style) in a sweet song that is out of tune and ruins an iconic song.
Most of the songs are strange and fail to produce the emotion and sweetness of the original film (rap... seriously?)
Everybody in Disney should remember what means The little mermaid to the company...

This movie deserve more.

Therefore, as an adult with my youngest child already in Middle School, there would be no reason for me to go see this in a theatre. Thus, in all transparency, I must admit that I only went with my family because of all of the backlash to the casting of Ariel, which is beyond ridiculous, and was fully prepared to sit through an uninteresting movie. All that being said, I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable the movie was, though the bar was low. And what I did find most enjoyable was the people of color period throughout the movie. I only expected Ariel’s character to be diverse. This actually added to the interesting elements of a movie that if it had been all-white, save the Jamaican crab, would have not provided as entertaining experience. This goes to show something I’ve often advocated in the workplace, that diversity for the sake of diversity should not be the imperative (I actually agree with the conservative and/or racist in this regard). But diversity should be an initiative to provide differing perspectives which add to the experience, whether in the course of completing a 9-5 job, or for pure entertainment value. In all of the woke/diversity/etc battles of today, its easy to miss how overwhelmingly White cinema and TV still is. Over 70% of shows and movies have white characters, with many most scripts calling for all but perhaps 1 or 2 people of color in the programs. To me more damning is the fact that over 90% of all shows and movies are at least headed by a White lead or co-lead. The real issue isn’t any forced diversity, it’s that we are squabbling over diverse projects that haven’t even scratched the surface. My hope is that people see this movie as a testament to the richness of diverse casts on the experience, rather than another diatribe against anything that takes people out of their idealized white world. I usually dislike movies with Melissa McCarthy but I felt like she was Ursula, voice and all. The main star sounded like Ariel and absolutely killed the songs. Otherwise the story was a pretty true interpretation of the classic cartoon with only minor changes to the aesthetic while maintaining a new reboot feel to the experience.

My only gripe is about 2 of the new three songs in the film. I thought the first and second were completely unnecessary and felt forced to give the main two stars more singing presence. The third one was pretty funny and enjoyable though. The big thing about this movie was that my daughter loved every minute of it. She thought the original cartoon was boring, but this one had vibrant colors, great sound, great momentum, and a brilliant cast that kept her engaged through the whole movie.

All in all, color me surprised and impressed.

The CGI is wonky at times. The romance scenes seem forced. The songs are underwhelming and don't hold up to the original at all. The only song that I really liked was McCarthy's Poor Unfortunate Souls, because it stayed true to the original as much as it could. McCarthy was also really good as Ursula, and I think she fit into the role quite nicely. Also, really liked the fact that Jodi Benson had a cameo. I will never forgive Lin-Manuel Miranda for putting The Scuttlebutt in the film. Not only was it cringe, but it was annoying. I also had a hard time sitting still as the movie was 2 hrs and 15 mins long. The changes were unnecessary and add nothing to the story. Save yourself. Watch the original. You'll have a better time of watching that, then you will this. Expand

Her vocal performance in the songs are the only parts of the movie that come anywhere close to the original. I know the suspicion going in was she was cast for the sake of diversity, a race swap for the sake of race swapping for 'woke points', but whatever the reason was she is absolutely tremendous and feels every inch a real life Ariel. Well done her.

Oh and I liked the use of vivid colour in Under The Sea. And it kept my two little ones entertained for an hour before they began to lose focus.

There, that's everything I can possibly say nice about this. Everything else - all other songs, the rest of the cast, the bloat added to the plot, the... literally everything - is a trainwreck, as in as bad and as uninspired as it gets, right down there with other calamitous Disney live action dross. But with this one you also get the added bonus of CGI nightmare fuel throughout. I'll see Flounder in my nightmares for years to come. I get the movie isn't made with my demographic in mind, but I can still judge it on its own merits, especially as a father. And it's awful. It has sole but no soul.

Another disappointing live action Disney remake. I did like some of their live action more than other but I was not a fan of this one.

WTF am I watching? I would said it's not about skin, not about the face, but sometimes some combo gotta be combo, like you can't use tofu to make fry fish, since those thing are fry tofu.

by the way, are we watching a movie or only listening the song? Halle Bailey sing good, but not the best, but acting skill are suck. so back to the main, what's this again? a movie, which need someone know how to act, but not how to sing. Acting skill is first consider then voice. and I do just put the "there's someone someone sing better then Halle Bailey" aside. Anyway, bad story, bad casting, bad acting. so do the effect...I mean, Avatar 2 already develop a very nice under water visual effect, but what the f am I watching? Guess a youtuber can do better underwater then this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is not as bad as I imagined, it could be better without some laceration points (Wolk), the character's ethnicity and the smallest of problems, it had everything to be the best live action since Cinderella, but let's get to the point if this one If the film was not set in 1830, I would not complain about the exchange of ethnicities, but I have to take into account the time that has passed, there were no other ethnicities besides white at that time, according to how a triton had 7 daughters with different ethnicities with the same woman, only it could be cuckold , third making Ariel not know that she has to kiss the prince , fourth the changes in the songs some changed the meaning of the story to seem feminist and the last point because the prince didn't save Ariel at the end of the movie and Ariel saves him in the original movie and he reciprocates at the end of the movie, it changed the meaning of her father changing his opinion about humans because of him if it weren't for those points the movie would have 5 stars and would be the best live action version since Cinderella... not to say that this movie didn't improve anything, the prince was the best part of the movie and the music he got gave more depth to the character and has some tributes to the classic, it's certainly better many live action released from 2019 to here and too better than Peter Pan and Wendy!!! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well i'll be the must objetive here. Its not the best movie out there but it isnt the worst neither. The cgi is the worst part, nothing looks real except the animals that talk (flounder, sebastian and Scuttle). Those 3 give too much cringe specially flounder and Scuttle. Also the rap between Scuttle and sebastian is the worst song in the movie, unbearable. The acting is passable, Bailey isnt as great as they want us to think but she does her job. Sometimes she has the same flat face (specially when she doesnt have voice). Ursula isnt as intimidating as the ursula from the original movie, she is supposed to be a sea witch monsters and McCarthy isnt intimidating. The New songs are passable also (except the rap) but giving Ariel another song while she doesnt have voice is ridiculous like they put it just to make Bailey sing another song. Unfortunately, this movie lacks the charm and magic of the original 1989 movie. Some scenes are way to dark and colorless. The fact that Éric is adopted is illogical and isnt explored more deeply, is just like they made it like that to justify making her mother black. Also the diversity in Triton's daughters are justified vaguely even if they explain that all the daughters have the same mother, illogical. In conclusion not the worst but not the best, is just another mediocre Disney live action that doesnt compare with the original movie. Expand
