So does the film deliver an excellent take onThe Batman is no doubt one of my favourite superheroes. After the slightly disappointing utilization of Batman in the DCEU, we get another interpretation of Batman from director Matt Reeves. So does the film deliver an excellent take on Batman or is it another disappointing utilization?

The biggest thing I appreciate about this film is that IT IS a fresh and new take on Batman. One of the iconic titles of Batman is that he is the "World's greatest detective" but we never see that get explored in any of the previous Batman movies. Matt Reeves focuses on this aspect of Batman throughout with him using his smarts to solve the mystery. Instead of this being the generic superhero movie, it instead feels more like a detective, noir, thriller and I love that. The story itself is very engaging and I love watching Batman try to unravel the mystery. It is also a very grounded and more realistic take on the character. It never feels like Batman is superhuman or using gadgets that are too futuristic. For example, the Batmobile is not a super over the top military tank-like in The Dark Knight trilogy or the DCEU. It's just a muscle car with a giant engine and it is still awesome nonetheless. It helps bring you into the world and also really makes the audience feel like Batman could get hurt in these fights.

The cinematography in The Batman is gorgeous. There are so many shots in this film that make the city of Gotham feel alive. It is the best looking Batman movie so far. On that note, I love the interpretation of Gotham in this film. It is dark and grim which illustrates how much of a hell hole Gotham is. Despite that, the city still feels alive at times and there are moments where Gotham can still look beautiful which shows worth in Batman protecting Gotham. The music is scored by Michael Giacchino and it is phenomenal. The music score he made elevates every scene and fits the story being told. He also made a new theme for Batman and it might become one of the most iconic Batman theme songs because it is THAT GOOD! There isn't a lot of action sequences in this film but when there are, it is pretty good. They're not going to blow you away like the Batman v Superman (2016) warehouse sequence but they are still fun nonetheless. Although, there is a very awesome car chase sequence and it might be one of the best I've seen in a Batman film ever.

Robert Pattinson is awesome as the titular character Batman. The way Robert moves and the way he talks as Batman is just a sight to behold. He actually makes me believe that criminals would be scared of him. I also love that his Batman is flawed and makes mistakes. I also appreciate that he does go through character development with him learning a massive lesson by the end. Colin Farrell is also great as the Penguin. Props to the makeup artist as he looks unrecognizable as the character. Praise must also be given to Colin himself as the way he speaks just works for the character and it doesn't sound like how he does in any previous movies. Additionally, Paul Dano as Riddler is exceptional casting. The Riddler as a character is incredibly goofy but Paul Dano manages to make him feel genuinely creepy and smart. The Riddler feels like a worthy adversary to Batman in this film. The rest of the cast also do a great job. Andy Serkis isn't in the film much as Alfred but I love this more fatherly take on him. Jeffrey Wright gives a more buddy cop take as Gordon with his friendship with Batman being a highlight in the film. Zoë Kravitz gives a more emotional take as Selina. John Turturro makes Carmine Falcone feel dangerous. However, I was a little disappointed by how "Bruce Wayne" was in the film. What makes Batman great is that Bruce Wayne is a different persona from Batman. Bruce Wayne acts like a playboy and party-goer while Batman is the broody vigilante. Unfortunately, there is no difference between Bruce and Batman in this film. Batman is broody and so is Bruce Wayne which is a shame as I think this is a great aspect of the character. I get why they went in this direction as in the film Bruce only wants to be Batman. Still, I would've liked to see Robert give two different performances for these personas instead of just one broody performance. I also have an issue with the relationship between the two characters which feels very unearned and sudden. Not going to spoil it but you can probably guess who. Overall, this is the best Batman movie since The Dark Knight (2008). Matt Reeves delivers a terrific Batman movie. It is a gripping detective thriller that is no doubt one of the most gorgeous superhero movies to date. Furthermore, a stellar cast that all give remarkable performances, an amazing music score by Michael Giacchino and enjoyable action sequences. The Batman is still one of the best to be done in live-action and I am glad to see that there are directors who can still give us something new with Batman. Can't wait for the future of this Batman franchise!

There's definite room for improvement in the sequel. I think the film would have benefited with being an R rating, the PG-13 watered the action down too much. I was glad to get my money's worth with 3-hours run-time, but it felt too long overall and the film dragged in parts. All the actors were excellent, but the star was the unrecognisable Collin Farrell as the Penguin. Bonus points for a great car chase and fight in a nightclub. Shame it was shot digitally. There was also a collective audible groan in the screening following the line 'white male privilege.' Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actually it should be a good movie. But I just don't feel this.
Starting with the fact that it is too long and has many lengths and that the dialogues are to fall asleep, it is not convincing over the entire length.
The cast is good except that Catwoman is a miscast.
The action is well staged but dulls because you always see the same thing.
Considering all the qualities of the Batman movies as a whole, this one is no more entertaining than the Joel Schumacher parts. Are ok, but far from the great films of a Nolan or Burton.

amateur technical review of "The Batman" by: Lucas Freire

Photography:
I don't remember a superhero movie with as much attention from the producers as "The Batman". It's as if they really wanted to be remembered for photography, the fact that the color palettes and the city of "Gotham" were very special and combined just made it all better. With landscapes seen from large buildings and the mix of orange and bitterness of "Gotham" shows that they used the advantage of the character "Batman" to show everything from above.

Tone:
The atmosphere that the film passes is good, but it leaves something to be desired when we talk about "Batman", I thought that in good parts we could have understanding and more perception of what is happening. In the interrogation scene of "Batman" and "Riddler" there could be more use of sounds to create a mood, although it is easy to identify the tension we would still have more use. Not only in this part, but in several moments of acute tension, the film fails to fix the viewer's large and super attentive eyes.

Soundtrack and sounds:
Simply fantastic the soundtrack, along with the photography of "Gotham" everything was harmonic. The sung and applied form of the song "Ave Maria" is also friendly to the dark and macabre mood of the film. The specific sounds I found to be desired, but not so much. This is to blame for the film's miserable failure to hold the viewer's attention in moments of tension, even having some more fixating dialogue.

Acting: Fortunately don't identify a tempting flaw either by facial or body expression. First I want to talk about the facial which is one of the most important, seeing the cast we can see that it is a first class group with a lot of experience, so there is not much to highlight besides the great faces and mouths of Robert Pattinson both as "Batman" or as " Bruce Wayne", we can see the anger, hatred, fear, surprise, despair mainly and bitterness. But not only him but everyone else has his essence in the film, sensual vulgarity, superiority, distrust and others. In terms of body, I will focus exclusively on combat, which we can say calmly is the best film in terms of the fight choreography of the "superheroes" genre, "Batman" is light, fluid and at its maximum strength, the use of environment objects is very good, the fighting style and combat in general seem very real and with a krav-maga feel.

So many elements of the film, from its detective noir story following a Jeffrey Dahmer esque Riddler villain, (masterfully played by Paul Dano), to its more internal struggle of Robert Pattinson's Batman two years into his fight for Gotham city. Matt Reeves The Batman is a spin on the caped crusader that has not been put to film in quite this same way by other directors. The film is crafted masterfully by excellent directing, acting, beautiful cinematography, and a great score. While weighing in at nearly three hours in length, the film surprisingly doesn't have much drag to it because of the expert pacing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd give this movie an 8.5/10 (rounded to 9/10).
My issues being that the penguin was rendered to a minor villain given his notorious reputation, we were barely given any screen time to understand this new iteration of Bruce Wayne as the movie is centred mostly around the detective work of the Batman, and the Riddler's final product was very underwhelming but still gruesome detailing how dangerous he can be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to like this. R.P. does a decent job when he's in-costume. Acts too moody as Bruce and comes off like a Walmart version of The Crow at times. Way too long. Totally contrived 'plot twists' ruin this movie. The fight scenes were cool. The Batmobile was super slick. There qere some good scenes, just clearly not 3 hours of them. At times, my friend and I wanted to fall asleep. The villian just plain sucked. The takeaway is that this just might be the worst Batman movie in the last 15-20 years or so.. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Batman (2022) is an almost perfect adaptation on the character of Batman. It uses its amazing cast to create a true crime/mystery story about one of the most famous Batman villains told in a narrative by Robert Pattinsons, Batman. This film is a true character study of Batman and highlights some of the key parts of the character.

In particular, the first 20 minutes stood out to me as it shows the crime and corruption of a place like Gotham city. This is the first take on the city where you truly feel immersed in what is going on there. The city doesn’t feel like Chicago or Pittsburgh. The city has life, you can see this in the shots at the beginning where you can see the rubbish lying around and the horrible conditions people are living in.

The acting in this film was truly fantastic, every character had a chance to shine and really do so. Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano were the particular stand out to me, Robert Pattinson showed the depressed side of Batman perfectly in contrast to what we have previously seen in films like The Dark Knight. Paul Dano played a mentally insane man perfectly and was genuinely terrifying when on screen. Zoë Kravitz and Collin Farrell were also both amazing however one flaw I think there was, was making Selina Kyle, Falcone’s daughter. It just seemed to be a bit of a cop out on the story.

Overall though, Matt Reeves did an amazing job. I loved this film and cannot wait to watch it again.

As I said, as a Batman fan, this is the perfect movie for me. But at the same time I really can't tell how the general audience will feel. This isn't your typical Superhero action flick. You have to be patient. There are a lot of things going on and that all comes together in a great third act. So, yup great movie. Go and watch it in the biggest screen possible.

PERFECTION
Matt Reeves' "The Batman" is the ultimate comic book movie, thriller movie, action movie, and, in my opinion, movie full stop.

This Batman really embodies the side of the character where he is a myth, a legend, a force to fear. After just two years of taking up the mantle Bruce struggles with the balance of his two lives and it just speaks more to the ending where he finally finds his place as the Batman that he is.
Paul Dano's Riddler is incredible. It is a wildly different take on the character yet keeps his core characteristics. He. Is. Scary.
The music for this movie is Oscar-worthy. It ties all the elements of this movie together and presents the mood very well.
Matt Reeves' cinematography is pure perfection. Every single shot is impactful and beautiful.

"The Batman" is the best movie of all time.

I really wanted to like this since it's so artistically and tonally what I wanted out of the next chapter in the batman world. There simply is no BANG! POW! ZAM! to the story. Bruce was enveloped in being the Batman, why? I can speculate, but the movie never really showed me. Batman is on the riddler case, but the mystery never felt clever or suspenseful, it was bit confusing. I wanted more time with the riddler from the riddlers perspective. What made him into a ticking time bomb? I wanted to see his struggles; a game of cat and mouse.

Speaking of Catwoman, I could not have given a **** about that story. It detracted from the focus of the Riddler. However there is so many things they got right. Gotham, the suit, the casting, the mood, the claustrophobia, the corruption, the filth of the city. All exactly what I want in my Batman movie, but the story was Ehhhh...

In this one, Bruce Wayne/Batman finds himself up against various terrorist threats from the menace known as The Riddler. With some help from Selena Kyle/Catwoman, he must dig deep into Gotham's seedy underworld of crime and corruption while also targeting some of it toughest mobsters, such as the Penguin to find the answers he needs. When I first heard the news a few years ago that Robert Pattinson was in talks to don the cape, I was immediately skeptical, not because of his past with 'Twilight' believe it or not, cause he's actually a hell of an actor if you watch some of his past and most recent indie films that he's done ('Good Time', 'The Lighthouse', etc), but because I simply didn't think he fit the part and I couldn't picture him in such an iconic role to save my life. However, when the first trailers of him in action dropped, I was intrigued, my doubts swayed, and my mind opened. The more previews I saw, the more excited and hopeful I became. And after watching this very epic and VERY long (3-hr) iteration of the caped crusader, I certainly have a lot to unpack here, so I'll start with the basics like usual. For starters, anyone going into this with doubts about Pattinson needs to put those doubts to rest and try your absolute hardest to disassociate him from 'Twilight', cause like it or not, the man can act, and he gives an absolutely stellar performance here both as Bruce Wayne and Batman! He really opened himself up here in every possible way and exposes himself to every possible emotion, easily making him the most sympathetic, grounded, and vulnerable Batman we've seen thus far! And while I wouldn't go so far as to say he's my new favorite Batman, he's right up there with Christian Bale and more than earned his chance to take on what many consider to be the most coveted role in Hollywood. As for the supporting cast, Zoe Kravitz is stunning and impressive as Catwoman here, and Paul Dano as the Riddler is absolutely haunting and chilling! The only weak link and character here I found to be rather miscast, despite lots of makeup and prosthetics being applied, was Colin Farrell as the Penguin. While everybody else in the film felt like they were on the same dark and gritty wavelength as each other, only Farrell feels cartoony and hammy compared to the rest of the cast, and the guy's just too tall and handsome in real life to make for a convincing Penguin. I know I can't be the only one who wouldn't picture someone like him in the role first thing. Storywise, it's not the strongest, and I couldn't help but notice that it borrowed heavily from a lot of the gimmicks and tropes that we've seen in several past iterations of Batman films, including several from 'The Dark Knight' trilogy, so it couldn't help but feel a little cliche and derivative at times. And as for that epic runtime, I was already skeptical enough upon learning about how long it would be, and told myself that a runtime that long would NEED to be justified, but unfortunately it just wasn't. There are several moments and scenes that felt very much like padding to me, and this film easily could've trimmed several moments to make it a half hour or so shorter and it would've been great. However, I will say that the overall tone, mood, and atmosphere provided that gritty noir-style Gotham most of us have come to love and expect over recent years, and it was definitely enough to keep me invested and not too restless during its 3 hours. I also really enjoyed the score in this one as well! It's worth noting just how well it fit with the rest of the film and helping with setting the tone, not to mention its surprisingly effective use of 'Something in the Way' by Nirvana on a couple of different occasions. By the time the credits rolled, it's obvious just how much the studio wants to set things up for further installments in this particular Batman universe, and with an intriguing enough set up with this first film, I'd be willing to see where things go from here. Overall, there's not really any surprises here in the way of that gritty noir feeling and style from watching Batman, but despite a somewhat redundant-feeling storyline with a good amount of excess it could've trimmed, the tense atmosphere and score, as well as Pattinson's bold performance, along with several others in the cast are the main highlights here that make the film compelling and worthwhile enough, and perhaps might add just enough intrigue to see where things go from here. How's the movie? Depends on your expectations. If you prefer a superhero film with tons of actions, moments full of hope, deviaing from reality then this film is not for you. But if you're a fan of the genre of crime- noir investigation and have been dying to see the detective batman in live action then this wiil exceed your expectations. Why is the movie three hours long? Well, it had two important jobs to do. Create the environment around Batman in a way that it feels fimiliar, full of life(depressing life actually),a city that goes well the plot not some out of context city out of nowhere just named GOTHAM and let each of the rogue gallary member a time to shine(remember why TASM2 failed?).I loved the comicbook references in this movie. The character development was at it's finest. The intrection among them was decent. Everything in this film was grounded. The action, the story everything. Battinson was great . But Cobblepot and the Riddler stole the show for me. I really liked the Zodiac-killer inspired Riddler. The cinematography and the score was phenominal. This was the best Batman movie ever, in my opinion. Robert Pattinson was an amazing batman. (It's funny, he went from a vampire to a bat lol) There were only little things I didn't like about him, but those things didn't ruin anything for me. I loved him overall. He is one of the best Batman's I've ever seen. The Riddler was PHENOMENAL! Perfection! One of the best, if not the best, villains I have ever seen on screen. Jeffrey Wright was born to be Gordon. Performed perfectly. Movies like this, and 2019 Joker, are what I've been wanting to see for a long time. I love the dark stories as if it's real life. I'm sick of all the kiddie superhero movies. I want the dark stuff. I want the passion and the real love for movies and making stories that make you feel on edge. 2019 Joker and this Batman did exactly that for me. I truly do hope they continue down this road with many other DC villains and heroes. There were only a few things I didn't like about this movie, but I heavily enjoyed it overall. A few cringe scenes. I think Colin Farrell did a perfect Penguin, it's crazy how much they changed his appearance, but the character just didn't resonate with me personally. I didn't feel a connection with that character. I also did not like Catwoman. I heavily recommended this movie. I will be watching more than once for sure. 8.5/10 Expand
