I feel like this is a film that deserves its 3 hour runtime. I usually struggle to watch a 3 hour film unless its Lord of The Rings but this film is added to the list. 10/10

By PG-13 I don't simply mean its visuals/goriness, but most importantly its dialogues, themes, and storytelling it tries to raise.

First, the dialogues. We get a glimpse of noir, but it soon falls flat due to a very uninteresting, plain, forgettable choice of words Batman used in his narration. Mind you, this is not a jab at Pattinson. But there is no emotion in his line of words. Batman in this film mutters words that are always very safe, very carefully chosen, which strikes as an odd contrast to Pattinson's tortured portrayal of Batman as someone with a seemingly pent up anger. His choice of words is very PG-13 so that the kids can understand what Batman is trying to convey.

Second, the storytelling. Despite being a film about vengeance-fueled Batman, we don't get to see him actually being in full "vengeance" mode. Batman's actions look very much apprehensive and controlled. Nothing too outrageous. Again, at odds with Pattinson's portrayal that seem to be full of anger; he's supposed to be really angry but somehow he still does not let his anger take the best of him.

Last, the depiction/visuals. I'm not speaking about cinematography (which is great), but how the scenes are depicted. The film sets this up as a film about hunting down a serial killer. But the film barely shows how cruel The Riddler can be to his victims. I'm not saying this film is terrible. The acting, given the limited script they had, is excellent. Pattinson did his best, so did Paul Dano (always likes him as a villain), Zoe Kravitz, and the rest. Cinematography is fantastic; the lighting, angle, everything here is very great that makes a couple of very good trailers - perhaps one could even say that the whole film trades off coherency for making the scenes "trailer-able". The music is iconic, although with an almost decent music directing. And I guess this detective Batman is a fresh breath of air.

But all that does not make the movie good as in the end it's still all over the places and very PG-13. Especially not with the 3 hours runtime where many scenes feel like a The Walking Dead filler episode.

If you're expecting a Batman film with similar gritty, tone to The Dark Knight trilogy or Joker, this film is not for you. But if you only want a live-action cartoon, I guess you can be satisfied with this one.

Instead of aliens invading from another dimension, we have a murderer on the lose in Gotham assassinating city officials. The Batman excels when it delves into the intrigue of corruption and violence that plagues the city, and for most of the first 2 hours it succeeds at drawing you into that grim and complex world where lofty ideals come face-to-face with brutal personal violence. Around 2 hours and 15 minutes the film comes to what feels like a fitting conclusion, and then...

The biggest drawback is the weak final act which comes out of nowhere and contradicts the villain's entire story arc. The closing set piece is not bad, it's just considerably weaker than the stronger parts that preceded it.

This adds another level to the character. The punches I feel, the atmosphere is so well done I think I just walked around the mean streets of Gotham for about three hours. This is world building at its finest and it’s the way it should be. Many movies don’t pay attention to the world they’re inviting the audience into but this is done brilliantly. This is a more believable character than the one in the Dark Knight but it lacks those amazing scenes that you got with the Joker. The villain is interesting and you understand his point but the Joker seems more villainous. Look I’m not asking for another Joker movie. I feel like that’s done. Maybe scarecrow or someone like that next.

Great movie! Would watch it again. Patterson did a great job.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you've watched The Dark Knight trilogy, you've already more or less watched this movie in a much better form. It borrows heavily from the themes and aesthetics of the Nolan films with an extra layer of depression and eyeshadow added for dramatic effect. While Batman assuming more of a detective role is indeed a welcome change, everything else feels like a downgrade from other movies. From dialogues so edgy you could cut yourself on them and a complete lack of saturation in the color palette to an absolutely repulsive version of Bruce Wayne that would be better off as the frontman of a grunge band than a charismatic millionaire moonlighting as a vigilante bat, the movie presents a rather unique, albeit out-of-character, version of the source material. The plot is decent, albeit dragged out, anticlimactic and littered with ham-fisted social justice sentiments. All in all, this movie feels like a great concept that is often tarnished by an eccentric director's vision and will to make it stand out from its predecessors in all the wrong ways. In an attempt to make it different, Matt Reeves forgot to ask himself if it is indeed going to be better. Nonetheless, it's an alright pulp-detective-superhero thingiemajig that you can enjoy as long as you can stay awake all the way to the end. Expand

Robert Pattinson is now my favorite Batman. He brings a new layer to the character and we see how Batman has essentially pushed Bruce Wayne away. We get to see that obsession with Batman that people only ever talk about. This Batman is an inexperienced Batman. He is only in his 2nd year of fighting crime so he makes mistakes and learns from them. He goes through a very compelling arc that fighting for vengeance isn’t the goal. Fighting to protect others and bring hope to those who have none is the goal. There’s a scene at the end that does this and it’s probably my favorite scene in a Batman movie. Paul Dano’s Riddler is amazing. Dano gives a performance that can rival Ledger’s Joker although Ledger is still better. He’s terrifying in a scary and funny way. Colin Farrell’s Penguin is a highlight as well. He’s completely unrecognizable here and brings plenty of comic relief to his performance. Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis’s Alfred are also absolutely phenomenal. The story revolving around Batman learning the truth about his parents and the city of Gotham is a very compelling and engaging story. For an almost 3 hour long movie, I wasn’t ever bored. Sure you could definitely cut a small handful of scenes out but the film is very well paced in that regard. Michael Giacchino’s has one of his finest scores on full display here. It will get stuck in your head almost instantly and really does a great job at showing how characters feel and adding tension to scenes. The action here is phenomenal. The highway chase is incredibly well edited and shot and Batman fighting criminals feels brutal. I prefer the action scenes in The Dark Knight but it’s still great here. The cinematography and directing are all fantastic. The film looks beautiful in almost every shot and you can see Matt Reeves on full display here. Definitely excited to check out more of his work. I’m unsure if The Dark Knight or this film is my favorite Batman movie. I would highly recommend checking this out when you get the chance. Expand

The DCU actually took a good turn with the Wonder Woman films, Shazam, even The Joker and the Snyder cut of Justice League. Who wrote this tripe? A junior high school kid? This film is long, the writing is pretentious bordering on parody, resulting in *actual* parody at times, and even though the cast is great and it is well shot, it just can't save it. I think comic book movies, just like actual comic books, are done. Modern Marvel movies are no better, and have actually been worse for some time. This movie is just straight up terrible, and if you make it through the olympic marathon run time, you are a greater man than I, Gunga Din. One star for production values. The writing is the worst I've ever seen, as a very longtime fan of such, in a super hero film. That is it. Please stop inflicting this cr*p on us. We have had enough. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pattinson is not Batman! Pet'itson may be a good actor, but he is not a good Batman. Actually he is the second worst batman of all time. The movie has some nice action scenes, that’s where Putitinson holds his mouth. But in between it is so utter boring. The Riddler is portrayed as a pathetic nerd. AND the leather mask from batman is bullet proof. Pityhisson should have died at least 5 times during all the shootings, but nooo … the bullets hit only his body armour which is indestructible yet still so easy to move in. Expand

Not saying it’s better than the Dark Knight, but in many aspects, it manages to surpass it. The art style and how Gotham is presented, how the city itself is the root of all the twistedness that is born out of it. The cast does a superb job on bringing the characters to life. Best sound effects that I have ever experienced: the roaring sound that sent my seat shaking. The new take on the batman that works perfectly in my books. He is young, raw, brutal, inexperienced, packs some punch and doesn’t really care too much at all. We also get to see the best Pinguin which might not be the hardest thing to pull off, but also the best Riddler who is second to none of the villains that came before him. Expand

This has to be one of the most over-rated Batman movies about. It tries very hard to be "The Dark Knight" but comes up woefully short. Very minor spoilers ahead. Nothing about the story itself.

1) Batman comes across as just a regular shmo running around in a cape. No cool James Bond style, he seems almost .. fragile. And this isnt a rap on the choice of actor - he actually is pretty good (no Christian Bale, but hes arguably as good as Ben Affleck), but the dialog in parts comes across a bit whiny and Batman doesn't come across being as intimidating as the other movies because of it.
2) The story is way to long and gets a bit dull at times. I mean sure it builds up a story but it takes way long to do so. Halfway in I found my attention wandering, which doesn't happen at other long movies like Avengers:Endgame e.g.
3) The villain and plot development isnt bad, but it feels more like a serial killer movie than a Batman movie. Some of the backstory about his family has an interesting twist, and the noir feel reminds me a bit of John Wick but it doesn't come together as well as that one (Batman is neither cool enough nor intimidating enough)

So all in all ... underwhelming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Batman is one of the most riveting comic book movie this year. The detective noir element provides a fresh relief from the previous batman series (and that's not to diss the Nolan Batman, those are terrific as well, but the Batman and Robin from the 90s, not so much) and as most of the critics have stated, this is a more darker batman. Now this isn't a origin story, but more of a finding self for the main protagonists. The riddler is quite a maniacal antagonists, leaving a set of clues for Batman after the victims have been brutally murdered. The interest of Catwoman I enjoyed very much, her story is very intertwined with the relation of the mob boss, Falcone. Everything in the plot is done very well, I was never bored and glued on the edge of my seat. Even the slow moments were excellent as well. The special effects and Reeves use of the red and dark colors really stands out. The only minor gripe I can have is that it was a little long. Overall, I would personally give it a 9.5 out of 10. Also, the ending is a nice little treat leaving fans to have fun with the speculation ;) Expand

The movie is very committed to its film-noir detective story, taking a lot of inspiration from Seven. It does take a moment to get used to the brooding, dark atmosphere but it suits the film well. It really is, for most parts, a film-noir detective story.

Unfortunately for all the detective work, the actual story, themes and plot don't come together quite as well as needed to make this film truly great. The plot loses the audience towards the end with the finale not really being fully explained. The villain's motivations aren't really explored and that applies to most of the main characters. They really lack a personal arc.

That leave the film feeling a little unsatisfying, even if it is uniquely crafted.

Rob did a great Batman but a dull uninteresting Bruce Wayne. Catwoman was well casted but as I feared her character is nothing more than a forced plot device, that didn't bring anything exciting to the table. ( Impo I can't stand the romantic tension, that not Batman to me.). To sum it up... First half was pretty awesome! But as the movie kept going everything started to feel flat, and I wish Catwoman was written better or just cut from the movie as I feel it took too much focus away on more important/interesting story telling. Lol the Riddler was bitter sweet by the end and I think the Penguin ended up being the most rememberable character oddly enough.

As he we see in his note book ”year 2, project Gotham” he is still working things out. To make this in to a hunt after a serial killer who calls him self the Riddler is the best thing they could have Done for a new take on the caped crusader. Expand

No sooner had I left the cinema than I saw a review of "The Topic Cinema". In conclusion, I deeply recommend watch the movie, the Batman is great, the cinematography is great, the catwoman is great, the villian is great.

With "The Batman," I think they've achieved something really special. The creative leeway they've given Matt Reeves has not only allowed for one of the best looking comic book movies ever made to take shape, but a comic book movie that I can truly say has gotten the closest to distilling the experience of reading a graphic novel down to a cinematic level. The saga at hand is so lushly designed and brilliantly realized, layered with hard-hitting action, vibrant character work and mesmerizing exercises in world-building. The performances are frankly top tier and Michael Giacchino's score is damn near perfect, if not the best thing I've ever heard him do. There's a lot to process here, but the more I think back on it, the more I'm reminded of the things I loved. I felt things watching this that I haven't felt while watching a Batman movie in quite some time. The first and last twenty minutes of this might some of the finest bits of any Batman movie we'll ever get. Simply incredible work and I can't wait to dive into this world again. Expand

The cinematography is just fantastic, there was a lot of care put into the way the scenes were shot (using different angles, lightning, etc). The villain was also pretty alright even if he was a bit of a Saw copy. The cast was for the most part pretty great, was not a big fan of the guy who played Batman but he was still fine. The romance was incredibly forced and was acting not so well which just made me wonder why the hell it was even put there.l The biggest issue for me was the movies length, they could have easily cut at least 40 minutes of the movie and we wouldn't have missed anything. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I credit Christopher Nolan with creating the most definitive Batman movie/s. In Batman Begins Nolan showed us whats possible if you took a comic book character, gave it some serious thought, properly good actors and a credible story.

‘The Batman’ does most if not all of the above, and goes in a different, albeit more crude direction, and this iteration of Batman movie as a whole, has a very believable homemade feel to all the props, cars, motorcycles and gadgets and it works for this movie. Even the camerawork feels crude, but I'm sure all the shots were meticulously planned and framed because there are some very iconic keyframes in the movie and it did not happen by accident or serendipitously.

So I am doing a 9 just to offset those idiots a little*

The negative reviews really show you how Marvel/Disney has completely screwed up people's attention spans. The movie is long, but it's pretty good. There are some really nice moments and shots in there. It's definitely not perfect, but people saying it's "SOOOO BORING"... maybe for them, but I kinda liked how slow paced it was at times. It leans more into the detective side of Batman rather than just explosive set pieces all the time with just non-stop action. However, it does have that action... it's just not the sole focus of the film. The slow moments in the beginning and world building actually help build up tension for when all that action finally breaks out which makes it more satisfying overall.

Part of the problem I have with so many Superhero flicks is that eventually I experience diminishing returns and even though there is a LOT going on on screen, it bores me. Non-stop action leaves me desensitized and becomes meaningless/boring. This movie actually balances the slow moments with the action-packed moments rather well and I appreciate that since a lot of movies don't seem to be interested in doing that nowadays. Again, it's not a masterpiece, but it is a welcome sight for me to see some superhero flicks kinda try to mesh with other genres instead of just being "ACTION! ACTION! ACTION!". This movie definitely has some Detective Noir influences which has ALWAYS been a core inspiration for Batman as a character, but has been largely ignored in movie adaptations of Batman. Idk... it's nice actually seeing the detective side on the big screen to a character with the nickname "World's Greatest Detective".

I can definitely say that this is better than Batman vs. Superman and Gotham for me. Those were... uhhh... not good in my humble opinion. I am not sure if I like it more than the Nolan series. I would say it's better than Dark Knight Rises, but I don't how it would compare to Dark Knight and Batman Begins for me. I would probably have to see it a few more times.

Anyway tangent over... it's good, but it definitely can be a slow burn at times. Slow burns doesn't mean "BAD BORING MOVIE" as so many reactionaries on this site seem to think... it just means it's for a different type of audience than the normal superhero "thrill a minute" blockbuster crowd.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was alright I guess.

Overly long, crap car chases, not as smart as it thinks it is so a bit slow and boring a lot of the time, but I didn't drift off once! The imagery is nice but all that was shown in the trailers. Music was meh, 4 notes and man cashes a cheque? Landed on your feet there Mike!

That said the performances were all great, Farrell was amazing, and the story was pretty good. Looked nice, although it looked like a tracing of a Nolan comic with some red splashed about to make it different-ish.

I'd say the run time was an issue. Hopefull in a sequel they will have the confidence to trim a little more fat.

A fair few plot holes; why is everyone going along the ground in a flood rather than up? There's multi-story buildings everywhere in the city, just go up two floors! Also the Riddler won, he killed everyone he wanted too and destroyed the city, it's Atlantis at the end, there's no way the subway system and everything above could be rescued, they would have to pump out the entire sea after they rebuilt the walls.

Final note, at the end Catwoman comes to the rescue after checking out, but we get shots of her both arriving at the stadium and inside the stadium so it's not a suprise when she helps, this is pretty basic stuff.

Reeves [Director] has really delivered a fresh and unique touch on a character that has been rebooted over and again with Pattinson defying my expectations in portraying the caped crusader spectacularly.

The dark, gritty, noir tones of the movie really set it apart from its predecessors and give us a character that is still grappling with who he is and where he fits into Gothams' tale as a vigilante still learning the ropes.

Seeing Batman lean heavily towards his detective persona really is a refreshing take and keeps true to the true strengths of what makes Batman great. The story really was captivating to watch and held its own without needing to be packed full of action. Reeves used what few action scenes he had really well and managed to deliver a Batman that was truly terrorising when the time called for it and managed to avoid delivering beat downs that were high in ASMR and avoided drowning them in musical scores that we've seen popularized of late. There's nothing quite like seeing Batman slowly slink from the shadows in silent ambience and hearing his fists beating skin to a pulp as his victims scream in terror.

Well done Reeves and Pattinson.

That is not year one or the beginning of his story! What is the point of Catwoman? Without her, it would make a story the same. She's awkward eye candy, with the message: White rich people are bad. The movie looks good and some scenes are pretty good, but they won't save the full movie. Actors did good jobs. At last, Batman should be IMO the sneaking creeping fear, a symbol of hope is Superman! Spoiler: Riddler is Bubbles from Trailer Parks Boys xD When you see it you can't unsee it :D Expand

Pior detetive do mundo, não adianta falar que é inicio de carreira, ficou 2 anos batendo em bandido pé de chinelo enquanto o Charada encontrou os verdadeiros bandidos de gotham.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Batman: Alright I was so hopeful that this movie was going to be good and thank god it lived up to it. Spoilers through out, I’m just going to start with some minor nitpicks it’s got to deal with the length because when the Riddler is caught it could have honestly ended a little bit after that. Other than that it was actually really really good as a Batman movie, not as it standing up to the legacy of the Dark Knight. For the main man Robert Pattinson is actually really awesome, you can tell that even though he was Batman for only 2 years he strikes fear in the criminals and he can kick some serious ass. He also proves that he is very very smart during the crime scenes it’s awesome. Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman was also really really well done she has a heartbreaking backstory. The villains good lord, Riddler played by Paul Dano he was spectacular, he’s not only menacing but he was chaotic and he had some serious issues. Also the Penguin played amazingly by Colin Farrell he disappeared with the makeup on and he is one of the personal highlights. The action scenes are well shot especially the dark hallway scene just gorgeous. Also we are getting a new Joker and I don’t want that to happen it’s too soon because we just got the solo movie hopefully it’s just a cameo. Overall I was very impressed with the movie Matt Reeves did really well Pattinson did great, Kravitz, Dano, Farrell, the action scenes, the music, everything was awesome I highly recommend this movie, just think about it being a Batman movie don’t hold it anywhere near the Dark Knight Level. Crow and Seven were far superior and the very obvious inspiration for this version of Batman. The love is for the dark atmosphere and sullen Bruce Wayne, which was okay but needed an R rating to be effective. Riddler was no where near as intelligent as the writers wanted him to be. His garbage bag uniform was poorly constructed and his character was totally undone in the third act. The penguin was an awful villain and only played a small role in what was an excellent car chase scene. Zoe was one of the best Cat Woman I've seen, she did a great job. Music was good, I enjoyed Batman's theme. Batman mingling with cops and the public upset me, it was such a detour of who his character is. As always these days, atmosphere and cool shots seem more important to directors than actual story. I have no interest in seeing a sequel. For sure this movie benefited from a long Covid lock down, people's excitement to get back to the movies overflowed into their general senses. Okay movie - not the Batman I'm looking for. Expand

The film is good. Their characters are well developed so as the plot. Its only issue is the length of the film, from the moment in which the director's focus is on a detective and paused film, there are tracks of the film that are somewhat slow.

With an opening two hours that drone on endlessly with humorless, joyless, one-note darkness, the picture manages to redeem itself somewhat in its end run, though, by that point, it's almost irrelevant. The narrative's overreliance on rehashed plot devices, recurrent red herrings, uninspired action sequences, pedestrian villains and a surprising distance from its comic book roots combine to turn what should be a thrill ride into a mediocre snoozy slog. Thankfully, fine supporting performances from John Turturro, Colin Farrell and Paul Dano, as well as capable production values, help to enliven this project somewhat, but, again, this isn't enough to raise the film's overall quality level. Indeed, the rave factor being lavished on this offering truly isn't deserved, especially when compared to the movies in the Christopher Nolan trilogy, all three of which outclass this release at every turn. I can't say I'm sorry I saw this, but I doubt I'll watch it again or rush out to see any sequels that comes in its wake. Expand

'Nolan's The Dark Knight was more of a Joker's movie while this movie though has a great antagonist in the form of Riddler it's a Batman movie. The characters of James Gordon, Selina Kyle & Penguin standout and I look forward to seeing more of their character arcs. Pattinson's portrayal of Bruce Wayne isn't quite there yet but he does pull off a good Batman.

Matt Reeves had a great take on the story and this is the best rendition of Gotham we've seen so far outside of comics. My only nitpick is that 'The Batman' movie starts to feel like a slow burner of a movie that ends with a bang but the ending didn't quite hit the home run.

But with the end credits/last scene in Arkham my excitement for the sequel and expectations are sky high! This movie is a must watch even if super hero movies aren't your preference 'The Batman' will still entertain you.

Finally a true Batman movie, not a Bruce Wayne movie, Batman is in costume 90% of the time and the focus is squarely on Batman from start to finish. An inspired take on Selina Kyle really put this movie over the top, and Kravitz Catwoman played of Pattison's Batman perfectly. This is a long movie, and not perfect, but I like how all the characters tie into the story and each other, so nothing feels unnecessary or out of place. I wasn't totally sold on this twisted version of the Ridder at first but Dano nailed the character. Stunning visuals from start to finish complimented by a strong score made this movie a blast. I have not enjoyed most DC movies in recent years but this feels like a true comic book style film and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Expand
