The action scenes, what few there are, are terrible, none of the characters are memorable, and none of the twists really work. They're all either extremely predictable, or far less interesting than what I was coming up with while watching it. Worse than all of this though, is supposedly an intellectual movie, that has multiple illogical and down right stupid moments that require unacceptable levels of suspension of disbelief from the viewer. The Batman series has had phases of excellence and phases of disaster, and sadly, this movie falls in the latter category. Save your money and watch something else. Expand

Never listened to these idiotic critics who have never read a comic, and never will.
This movie is receiving the same kind of treatment as The Joker.
That movie turned out great and was highly profitable and the same can be said about this one.

Film molto caratteristico , non il classico film banale sui super eroi. Effetti sonori e telecamere ne fanno da padrone. Ottimo film anche per chi non è un fan.

However, after watching the film, I was impressed. Matt Reeves is one of my favorite directors and I'm glad he finally got his chance to deliver a legitimate blockbuster film. But that does not mean that the film is perfect. First off, lets talk about the pros of this film. 1. Pattinson is a great Batman. More so, he is a great Batman that is just starting out as Batman. 2. It shows more of the detective side of Batman that people have come to know and love about Batman. 3. The action is phenomenal. Great cinematography, great sequences, great special and practical effects.
4. Paul Dano as The Riddler and Colin Farrell as The Penguin are amazing. 5. The Music and Sound Design for this Batman are top Tier

All of these things are great about the Batman movie, but now lets talk about the not so great parts.

The Cons:
1. Pattinson is not a great Bruce Wayne.
2. Catwoman is just ok
3. Andy Serkis as Alfred could have been better 4. The pacing is a little off in some parts of the film
5. Sequel Baiting

In a lot of ways, this is more like a murder mystery, but the serial killer is an early incarnation of The Riddler (a creepy Paul Dano). Sure, Batman gets to whip out some cool gadgets and kick ass, but this iteration is more about his early inner conflicts and finding his footing in the superhero world. Pattinson is suitably sulky and gloomy (much like his fame-making role in the Twilight series). His romantic connection with Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) has some intense sparks, but it's really about all the dark criminal elements of the city and when I say dark, almost none of the film is shot in daylight. Director Matt Reeves has created some visually arresting moments, but most of the fights are a blur without much clear action. Surprisingly, at almost 3 hours it never lags, partially because Reeves has managed to keep the interactions compelling. This is a worthy and interesting new take on the legend. NOTE: There's a short, dumb bit at the end, so no need to stay, but take a blacklight and check out the hidden message at the top of the poster. Expand

Although the film's runtime could've been cut by about 30 or so minutes and the romantic chemistry between Robert Pattinson's Batman and Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman felt really off, The Batman mostly lives up to the lofty expectations set by fansAlthough the film's runtime could've been cut by about 30 or so minutes and the romantic chemistry between Robert Pattinson's Batman and Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman felt really off, The Batman mostly lives up to the lofty expectations set by fans of the character and The Dark Knight movies that came before. The acting from the heavy majority of the cast is great, especially Pattinson when he's donning the cowl (less so as Bruce Wayne, where he comes off as kinda creepy), Kravitz, Paul Dano, and an unrecognizable Colin Ferrell. The riddles laid by The Riddler are both clever and digestible, the atmosphere around Gotham is very well-done, and the action choreography is fantastic. While it treads some similar ground to other Batman films before it, two things it does exceptionally well are making Batman do actual detective work and giving him a real character arc, something no Batman movie has really done before this one. Finally, in spite of the film's bloated runtime, it's paced really well and the pressure/intensity built up through the direction and score is great as well. While it could've been potentially streamlined a bit, The Batman should satisfy most comic book movie fans, as well as most movie fans so long as you're willing to enjoy the film through its 3 hour runtime. Most of what you see is nothing new, but I think it’s worth watching for the little bit that is.

The Batman is utter crap.

Incredibly mediocre in concept, plot, action, and performance. Blandly noir in style. At LEAST an hour longer than its plot merits on account of a red herring (a predictable red herring) that takes up the entire second act.

The soundtrack consists of mostly the two chords from Nirvana’s “Something in the Way”, and Bruce Wayne, in the few moments that the movie allows the character to exist at all, is tediously ‘emo’.

It’s crap.

But it's the most perfect Batman that's ever been seen in theaters. No, you didn't get it wrong, he's the best Batman; in question about the Batman movie, the best can still be considered "The Dark Knight". But like Batman, this one gives us the best version of the hero. The movie starts and it won't show that old Bruce character scene that never was, but the look of Robert Pattinson and you'll see that his son has left Crime Alley, he's a walking cemetery, the pain and anger are in him, it's so sharp; which becomes palpable.
Apart from Batman being The Batman, Gotham is as faithful as possible, the city is alive! Gotham and the sick society deham is another essential hit of the film. The city is the character that created Batman and his madness, and the city perverts this "symbol of hope" that was already perverted and also creates the Riddler and that, my friends, is crazier than Batman, literally. Haha ha! Véioooo what a movie, what a movie! I won't go on to avoid spoilers.

To start, the dialogue sounds like it was written by an edgy 12-year-old boy. I suppose that's fitting since that seems to be the target audience. It wants to be dark and edgy, without ever actually committing to anything dark or disturbing. It tries too hard while simultaneously falling flat. A lot of character decisions don't make much sense if you think about them too hard. The romance doesn't make any sense- it feels just shoved in there. There were some scenes that they clearly wanted to include, even if they didn't fit very well. Batman walking through water with people following- it's a cool shot, I admit, but it feels awkward and inconsistent with the rest of the scene/movie. Lastly, the movie is way too long at 3-hours. I don't regret watching it, but I wouldn't watch it again. The best part of this movie was that they included some amount of detective work on the part of batman- this is interesting and hasn't been included in other recent renditions of batman.

If you want to turn off your brain then this is probably a fine movie. If you have any bit of skepticism about what you're being presented, the movie will disappoint.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Such a horrible film. There was zero character development, at all. Made the story feel so disjointed. Felt like someone drew up a storyboard and was shooting scenes of it, and didn’t really care how they were strung together. Did anyone notice that Bruce was out of suit maybe for 5.5 minutes combined? Literally no lines outside of him being in his Batman persona (fighting crime!) so no chance to earn any depth. Possibly one of the worst scripts of all time. Love Rob, but there’s only so much you can do with a horrible character and horrible script and direction. Did anyone else die a little Inside when he went to the club with his hair over his face? Like an emo 00’s kid. And the casting. THE CASTING. Jeffrey Wright, while generally a good actor, was not meant for this role. I cringed every time he was on screen. Gollum/Snoke, while an AMAZING actor, is NOT Alfred. Such an odd and ill fitting choice. Zoe Kravitz is generally a bad actor imo, and the script just sent her plummeting. Can we talk about her characters big reveal with the falcon being her dad? And then what? What did we do with this info thereafter? How did it further the story? Can we talk about the weird ass “woke” lines. “They’re just a bunch of straight white privileged **** - says to a straight white male. “Let’s take down those hedge fund guys” -says to a hedge fund guy. I consider myself “woke”, but my dude, make it in character and canon. Literally pulls you right out. And the Riddler talking to his followers like a **** twitch streamer? What’s going on in this movie? Visually it was pleasing, hence my 2. That’s the only praise I can give. Rob as Batman is good, as Bruce is horrible. As Bruce, felt like a twilight rendition with his angst emo-ness. Expand

The Batman is a movie that claims to revolutionize big-screen adaptations of the classic character, but fails in almost every way.

The cinematography and music/score are amazing, but every other aspect of this movie left me wanting.

Batman is a moody like a teenager, and clearly is supposed to learn a lesson about what he represents to the city of Gotham. But that lesson is completely unearned by the end of the film, and in fact his character is almost superfluous to the heroic climax.

Zoe Kravitz tries to deliver an intriguing Catwoman, but the writing leaves her as a damsel in distress multiple times, and the super-flawed Batman is constantly taking the moral high ground with her and talking down to her.

Colin Ferrell's Penguin was a high point for his performance and humor, but underused as just a secondary villain.

The plot is plodding and overly-long. Upon my second watch of the movie, I found myself drifting off to sleep often in the first half. Knowing what happens next, I lost all interest in the mystery because it is delivered in an unexciting manner. The Riddler is the main antagonist for awhile, but then disappears from the movie and is replaced with a string of other threats before becoming just another item to be checked off the list by the end.

The action is well choreographed, but just like other DCEU films, there is a swath of collateral damage that is far too apparent to be ignored as it is. Batman is just as destructive at the end of the film as he is at the beginning, leaving one to wonder what the lesson is to be learned here.

On a related note, the movie does touch upon current issues such as corruption and greed in politics and government, but then has a very regressive take on the mentally ill and the drug epidemic. The themes presented here are muddled and presented in a slap-dash manner that makes little sense.

Overall, I found the movie boring, regressive, and without meaningful themes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I understood what the director was going for, however I felt there were so many issues that it made the movie very dislikeable. The script was terrible in places - drawn out and boring, which in turn seemed to make the actors unable to act to the best of their ability. Many scenes could have been cut to 25% of what they were. The camera lens choices were not to my taste, but it worked all together with the feel of the scenes. The actors were very poorly cast in the majority of characters - the only one I liked was Gordon. I do think that if you have seen the Gotham series then that may have spoiled batman films as it is an incredible series with great character development (of which there was none in this film). The romance between Batman and Catwoman was so wooden and unnatural, like there was no chemistry at all. It got to the point in the film that whenever there was extended sections that could have been a quarter of the length, I just found it laughable. I'm glad some people enjoyed the film but please compare it to a number of films and series of the same type before you decide that this is in the realm of good.
Would never watch this again and would avoid any future ones in the same series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman is an incredible film with not much problems dragging it down. The cinematography is the best I've seen in a superhero movie in a long time. This movies looks better than Dune and that's a long feet. The vibe of Gotham is literally what you would expect Gotham to be, this **** hole place filled with corrupt leaders and insane criminals. Pattinson's portrayal as Batman is just really damn good, I think it's a tie against Bale's Batman. Riddler as a villain may not be Heath Ledger level but he is definitely 2nd place. His reasoning for everything he did fits perfectly well with Bruce's journey into becoming the hope of Gotham.
The movie is much more of a detective film compared to the other movies. It's a cat and mouse chase just like any other detective but this one is done really well in particular. Some of the reveals will surprise or excite you for what will happen next and the movie rarely diverts away from that main plot.
Every actor did wonderful in this film with Robert being the carrier. The arc Bruce goes through and finding out the secrets of his family into becoming the hope Gotham needs rather than the revenge fueled man he was at the beginning was absolutely astonishing. There are basically sorta 2 plots in this film. Number 1 is his chase for the Riddler and 2nd is him finding out the truth about Gotham and his family's past. All this plot concludes with an ending that wraps itself really well and feels as though all the suffering everyone goes through has lead to this final moment.

1. Robert Pattinson's acting as Bruce Wayne. I understand the criticism of Bruce Wayne and Batman being the same character personality wise but I disagree that it is a fair criticism. His entire motivation in 90% of the film was him not caring to be Bruce Wayne. He doesn't care if he is a Wayne and he doesn't care about his public image. My criticism is how he looks. He looks way too emo to be Bruce Wayne and he never changes his voice when he is Bruce Wayne. I know he doesn't care but he should care about people finding out that he is Batman. He also doesn't feel rich, there is really no scene that shows the fact that he is very wealthy. His appearance has Bruce Wayne always feels a little flat

2. Luck and coincidences
For example, after Gill Colson explodes in front of Batman's face (I have no idea why he is so close to a bomb that's gonna explode in seconds, he wouldn't have time cover his face and somehow his face remains clean), the police waited to bring him atop the police station and then starts to question whether they should take his mask off. Lucky him.
And another one which is the biggest sin. In the final riddle, he happens to be helped by a police officer that happens to be there and he also happens to know stuff about carpet which helped Batman to solve the riddle. This is so damn lucky and lazy by the writers. Looks like they got tired making things happen for a reason so instead things just happen because they do. 3. The length
This movie is almost 3 hours long and I think after watching it, you can trim out some bits that isn't really needed (which would prolly be like 10-20 minutes). Some scenes where Bruce is drawing the clues on his floor or scenes where he is walking through the crime scene could be sped up a bit or chopped down cuz it feels long and nothing interesting is really happening. Other than that, it's still an incredible film. My actual score is an 8.8 (very close to a 9) but metacritic includes no decimals so I'm giving it a 9. It's my favorite movies from DC since The Joker and The Suicide Squad.

It’s dark, rainy, grim, a wasteland, and we see the birth of its greatest hope right before our eyes. Robert Pattinson carries this film while having to be emotionally cut off to match the state his character is in. Through his eyes are the gateway to Bruce Wayne’s soul, Through his words are the gateway to the Bat. He is the best Batman, and he’s the best thing about this film. That’s saying a lot.

Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright etc… all do phenomenal jobs. It’s meticulously shot, scored, and directed. It’s violent, it’s moody, Nirvana plays, and by the end you feel so hopeful about the future. This is one of the greatest comic book films ever made. It perfectly captures a character and its world and brings it to life. It’s long, but holy cow is it a ride. Incredible job by all involved 5/5

The portrayal of The Riddler was probably my favorite part tablet it. He had an uncanny Ed Kemper vibe to him, that really made him feel very scary.
The action scenes were also great.

What ruined it for me though, was Robert Pattinson as Batman.
The way Batman was portrayedwas too edgy and emo for my liking. I read a lot of the Batman comics, and I get that he’s actually very often portrayed like this in the comics, but he’s also portrayed like this big, burly dude who got a hurt a long time ago, and now he’s dishing out his vengeance. He’s like a hurt kid hiding behind a ton of muscles.
While Robert Pattinson brings the muscles to the table, you can’t help but notice that he just looks like pale a vampire (I’m sorry, but it’s true), which makes the character seem more like a depressed teen, than a man who’s seen some **** Also, all scenes with Bruce Wayne could have been omitted as they served no purpose to further the plot.

Speaking of the plot, it’s very convoluted and messy. It draws some light inspiration from The Long Halloween, but combines it with a bigger-than-life, nonsensical story about The Riddler that would have worked well in a comic, but in this movie it falls flat.

I think the main reason for this is that the movie tried very hard to be grounded and gritty, but fails to ever mention why there’s a guy dressed like a bat in this dirty, realistic Gotham.
On one hand I understand why they chose not to address this; we’ve all heard the story a thousand times, and it doesn’t need to be retold - but on the other hand, here we have a city filled with terrible crime and cop drama, while a guy runs around dressed like a bat and everyone just accepts it.
Sure, the movies tries to justify this when The Batman first appears by having some thugs make fun of his costumes, but it is never brought up again or even questioned.

In “Joker”, which also rooted it self in realism, the character works because we get the backstory and an explanation for why a criminal dressed as a clown makes sense in this world.
On the other hand, we have Christopher Nolan’s movies, which were also somewhat realistic, but added lots of techy elements, that made the inclusion of a man dressed as a hi-tech bat feel less questionable.
“The Batman” just flat out ignores this whole conundrum; it’s a gritty, dark crime drama with a guy in a bat costume. When you say that sentence out loud, you’ll understand why the movie didn’t work for me. I’m not saying they had to retell his entire origin story, but when choosing to ditch the gadgets, make every other character dress in something more realistic and make Bruce Wayne as 2D as possible, it just seems so stupid that this guy would run around in that costume in this world. I know, I know; I’m supposed to just accept the premise because it’s a beloved character, but in my opinion, it just didn’t work in the world this movie set up.

It's similarly grounded like Nolan's Batman movies but much darker, grittier, and more brutal. As a big fan of Batman graphic novels, this film felt more like a Batman film than any Batman movie that came before it (not saying it's the best Batman film). The Batman's character arc was a highlight of the movie for me. There were several moments in the first two-thirds of the film where I remember thinking "this is just retreading ideas that I recall from Nolan's The Dark Knight," but the ending actually expanded on these ideas in a really refreshing way that I'm surprised Nolan didn't think of himself. I'm very excited for the inevitable sequel.

A controversial take, but not a negative critique is that the cast was simply good. Not great. Looking back what previous actors brought to the table, I don't think this cast did anything special. Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeifer, Danny Devito, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, and Tom Hardy were truly memorable and awe inspiring in their total embodiment of their characters. Although this could change over the course of the sequels, I think that most of the cast of this film don't achieve similar heights. They are good, but not great. Pattison really didn't have much to do other than walk, coldly deliver lines, grunt, and fight, but he did it all well. Wright as Gordon didn't really bring anything new to the table in my opinion, but again his performance was solid. Serkis as Alfred was completely forgettable and hopefully they give him more to do in the sequels. Dano, Ferrel, and Kravitz were just short of great. Dano spent most of the movie behind a mask and I often felt like his sporadic emotional fluctuations when delivering his lines were less frightening and more distracting - reminding me of every other actor whose portrayed the unhinged psychopath this way, pulling me away from the movie. Ferrel's Penguin has me thinking The Batman is an earlier frontrunner for Best Makeup, but his character was nothing more than a club owning mobster. Between the makeup and his performance, it could have been "great" if he'd have been given more to do. The best part about Kravitz was the story and fight choreography. But her actual performance felt like a retread of what's already been done and I didn't really feel any actual chemistry between her and Batman, so their intimate moments felt a bit forced. Again, definitely not bad and her character's story combined with Arkham style fight choreography elevated her performance above "good" but just short of "great." The only character that I thought was "great" is someone I haven't really seen anyone talk about... John Turturro's Carmine Falcone. Even with only a short amount of screen time, he stole most scenes he was in. His delivery was subtle, yet intimidating. He never took off his sunglasses, but you could feel his eyes penetrating each character he gazed at. I don't think he's getting nearly enough credit for his role in the film.

The only valid negative is that this movie was too long. On that note, I don't know what I'd cut from it cause it really didn't have any filler. I would love to see a director's cut that potentially cut the movie into 3-4 separate chapters/episodes like Tarantino's Hateful Eight.

I seen the trailer and made my call, but she wanted to see it and hooked the kids, I paid over 90 dollars to sit there with one kid a sleep, my wife leaving with the young one a hundred times, and I wouldn't put it past her that she took the little one into another movie for kids, because it wasn't what she hoped for. It was hyped because of the cast and nothing more, and it is seen here in the 10's. Praising it for its plot and great acting, and out of it all it was Kravitz that made what a slog it was and the jumbled mess of scenes running together so fast but not showing the timeframe it took place in. My old lady for what little she did watch called it a bad seven reboot, I can't say she is far off. The few high points were the trailer scenes at the beginning, about middle and the close end. It could've been an hr if that of run time and still told the story, but everything was drawn out and over acted or not acted at all in alot of the film, out of having the most bad guys in a super hero movie wasn't any of them a threat of had you going I hope its going to be ok, because you knew even when someone was going to die ahead of time. The music was pretty decent for the dark gritty take, the way it was shot was almost Tim Burton in a way with a modern city. It kept spinning wheels but no one character got much screen time for the thing being 3 hrs and that was the saddest of it all really, coming from Reeves who isn't the best director, but isn't bad either, and thats where this 200 plus million movie falls into, its not bad but its not good either, and I do feel ripped off and cheated because of the hype and higher price tag the tickets were. And to add at all the fan boys of pattison, even though Nolan isn't the director the Reeves is all his Batman movies made every scene count and that's why I'm saying this doesn't hold a candle to his version because he hit it on all accounts, even though he let Hardy make a mocking of Bane in some ways. Mathew Reeves is a genius. A genius for following the
Comics portrayal of The Batman. For the first 10 min
of the movie I got a little nervous because it wasn't
the Batman that I was used to. But after a little bit of
seeing the most Accurate Bruce Wayne and most
accurate Batman combo, I was surely surely satisfied.
Overall, the writing in this movie and cinematography
is just perfect. Perfect perfect perfect. And a huge
thanks to Michael Giachino for being the best
composer of all time next to James Newton Howard
and Hans Zimmer.
As for the acting. There could not. And I repeat could
not have been a better cast. Paul Dani made the
movie alone with his preference on the Rider. Just
genius. And if I didn't know before the movie that
Colin Ferral was the penguin, I would have never
guessed it. As for Robert Pattinson; bravo my friend.
You played the absolute best version of The Batman
that anyone could ask for. Where as with the other
Batman's, they were seen as two characters (Batman
and Bruce Wayne), your version matched the Comics
of the right balance of Billionaire Playboy and the
right balance of dark rich vigilante. And Zoe's acting
can go without saying as the perfect cat woman too.
Hot, sexy, straight to the chase, hurt, broken, and
Flexible.

The movie deserves an 8.6 rating but I’m giving it a nine to boost the rating.

For the first time in a live action version, Batman is the most interesting character. This is a character study on Batman and is far from the usual comic book fare. It is a refreshing direction that is slow and methodical. Though it is technically not an origin story, it weaves the beginning tales of iconic characters masterfully. Robert Pattinson as Batman and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon specifically were highlights as their partnership was truly believable. Wright’s Gordon in particular felt very world weary as it felt like Gotham was consuming him. That leaves Gotham itself as it can clearly be seen how wretched the city is as it consumes everyone living in it. While the plot has some minor issues and the pacing is not always perfect, this is the best start yet to a new Batman story. I cannot wait to see where Matthew Reeves takes us next. Expand

▪ Text: Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy are praised as one of the greatest superhero movies, as its prestige set an unsurmountable standard for later productions. After a decade, The Batman is agreeably the most successful resurrection of the icon.

Suppressive close-ups, contrasting lighting, and ceaseless soundtrack all display the palpable tension of Gotham city and its humid hellholes. Where the neon light couldn’t reach, even a silent frame of lurking shadow could instill fear into the audience.

Regarding characters, Andy Serkis’ veteran version of Alfred, Colin Farrell’s perfidious Penguin, and Jeffrey Wright’s faithful Gordon all provide new vibes that are unique from the previous movies. With a pair of nerdy glasses, Paul Dano performs a lethally menacing sociopath, child of solitude and envy, who’s distorted wish for a purge of corruption can only be expressed by bloodshed and grotesque riddles. Zoe Kravitz on the other hand, presents an audacious but righteous Catwoman with lineage that motivates her vengeance, as her relationship with Batman develops from enmity to mutual attraction.

Robert Pattinson nailed his character, through the detailed investigation and powerful punches, introducing an uncompromising, reckless, but dutiful vigilante. Even masked, every glimpse and stare of Pattinson fully demonstrates the Batman’s hesitation, fury, and vigilance. Bruce Wayne lacks affection, and Batman lacks recognition; Bruce grows by heartfully loving Selena and accepting the sin of his family, Batman grows by becoming a savior, a fearsome symbol, a stray of light that wades through murk and leads the people. Whether frantic mobs or hypocritical politicians, it is convincing that the city’s depravity can be arbitrated by our hero.

The only things I have to complain: firstly, can we not whisper through all our dialogues? It’s extremely tiring to completely understand the plot especially for a detective movie. Secondly, because of the singular narration, the pacing of the film is slightly slow. This can be resolved by combining conversations with ongoing events to increase tension and speed up storytelling (which is what Nolan did to earn 9.1 for Dark Knight on imdb).

Overall, Batman meets my expectation and impresses me with a different tone from the other DC movies. An absolute must-see.

Building on a 100% neo-noir setting, amazing photography and an unforgettable soundtrack, Matt Reeves has created a powerful film with great sequences (Batman intro, church, car chase, Riddler-Batman conversation). Dano, Kravitz and Wright do their best, not envying their predecessors in the roles. Pattinson, for his part, is a very good Batman, although I would have liked to see more of Bruce Wayne, to feel more of his pain (probably Reeves' intention is to show you a Bruce Wayne still reluctant to fully show his "scars", maskless).

The 3-hour running time flies by, which speaks very well of the script and its pacing, dosing drama, thriller and action. Not to mention the parallels with Zodiac and especially Se7en, both in particular elements of the plot, as in the main themes of the story. My main problem with the film was that I felt that it went from more to less and that, even though I was invested on it, I didn't fully connect with the Falcone//mob plot.

It starts out with the murder of a Gotham city mayoral candidate by the Riddler and we are told Bruce Wayne has been Batman for 2 years fighting crime. We see Batman apprehend some random thugs early on in the Gotham streets. Batman meets with Gordon to solve the Riddler mystery, and the Riddler leaves behind riddles as clues. The Riddler is sort of like Jigsaw in the Saw movies, the serial killer in Seven, or the Zodiac killer and he wears a green domino mask with a green jumpsuit with a question mark on it. The Penguin is also in the movie as a mob boss and he's somehow involved in the whole ruse. A sexy Zoe Kravitz plays Selina Kyle or Catwoman, a cat burglar, who wants revenge on Carmine Falcone for killing her roommate. She is Batman's love interest in the movie. Overall, the movie has some great action and cinematography and is pretty tense. It keeps you on edge. One criticism I have is that it was a little too gritty and dark, and took itself a little too seriously. There is very little in the way of comic relief, but that's usually what you can expect from the Batman movies. Expand

Looking at it as an batman movie , I can say that it was a solid comic adaption .
But as a thriller and detective movie I think it was excellent

A massive letdown...

I'm as big of a Batman fan as they come and I was beyond excited for this movie after several stunning trailers, I even liked the casting of Pattinson of Batman and wanted to see him prove all the doubters wrong...

First I'll say what I did like about the film:
-The score
-The cinematography
-Colin Ferell's unrecognizable performance
-The Batsuit and Batmobile
-Catwoman's portrayl

Now what I didn't like about this one:
-The snail like pacing
-Emo Bruce Wayne who doesn't separate his Batman persona from his regular life
-The lack of screen time and chemistry for Alfred
-The jumbled and disjointed plot that doesn't seem to know exactly where it's going
-Riddler's ultimate ploy at the end of the movie not aligning with his motivation from the rest of the film
-The lack of memorable action scenes - Some rather cringey/weak dialogue which I blame on the writers and not the stellar cast

While not an entirely a bad film, it simply left me with a feeling of "meh' which is not what I expect from a big budget lice action Batman reboot. A reboot has to feel necessary and this movie does nothing better than the Nolan film's already pulled off. I literally went home and rewatched Batman Begins after I left the theater just to remind myself of what a Batman movie should feel like.

The SE7EN and ZODIAC Fincher influences are there, and this feels much more ingrained (for better more often than worse) into the detective aspect of Batman as a character. This comes at the expense of Bruce Wayne as a character, which is more glaring in the 3 hour runtime. But, spending time in this version of Gotham was a real treat. Expand

The only real criticism I have is that parts of the film did seem a little oddly paced at times, which can make the viewer feel a bit "jointed around", but this is a smaller criticism; it does not negate the films great acting, scenery, cinematography, choreography, and concepts. The Batman is an absolute must watch, and I can not wait for the inevitable sequel. Expand

Phenomenal directing throughout, tension built to perfection, with a more realistic take on the Batman. The best Batman film that I've ever seen.

Incredible film. More of a murder mystery, detective movie , rather than an over the top superhero picture. That being said, it’s still a Batman film.

It's also interesting to look at the psychology present in Batman's mask and how it affects his personality as Bruce Wayne. When wearing the mask, Bruce "loses" emotions and becomes more instinctive, and when he takes it off, he "sees" himself dependent, bitter, as a person who is not able to overcome his trauma. He does what he does on the streets as he believes it's a unique way in his life in the sense of facing the past and preventing it from happening to other people. It's like Bruce just confronting his inner beast, in this case, the Batman persona. Also, it's important to see that Batman, in his second years on the streets, is still imperfect, that he's still in a process of identity construction. In that second year, he investigates a series of murders of Gotham's politicians and influentials (who were related to Batman). However, an unexpected moment, such as banners and the political case was exactly with the corruption of the city, becomes something more personal, which has psychological consequences and shakes Bruce's essence and mentality throughout the plot. It is also interesting to analyze how the film connects the Riddler's life with that of Batman: Trauma motivates one to fight crime, while the other to commit them. Expand

It’s Halloween night. Do you know where the Batman is? Is he lurking in the shadows of that alleyway you face after a robbery you commit? Is he inside the building you’re vandalizing, waiting for your guard to drop? Or maybe he’s behind youIt’s Halloween night. Do you know where the Batman is? Is he lurking in the shadows of that alleyway you face after a robbery you commit? Is he inside the building you’re vandalizing, waiting for your guard to drop? Or maybe he’s behind you in the subway as you heckle an innocent bystander. It’s a big city. He could be anywhere. He could be anybody. How would you ever know?

Matt Reeves’ interpretation of the caped crusader in “The Batman” focuses a lot on the fear that he instills. Fear has been in important plot device in every iteration, but it’s played on a lot here. A lot of criminals will boast how unafraid they actually are, but when they see the cowl erupt into the light, and the speed of him increase they can’t help but cower and lose that naive bravery.

But fear is not the only tool Batman/Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) has in his arsenal. In addition to being a very imposing figure with incredible, but grounded, gadgets, Batman has his mind, where he takes on the identity of the world’s greatest detective, a famous moniker that Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin (Colin Farrell) takes and puts on its heels. And he needs to be if he hopes to save the city from its latest threat, The Riddler (Paul Dano), a masked serial killer hellbent on revealing the corruption of the city of Gotham and its leaders. Not just the crooked cops but the elected officials, members of the mob, and philanthropists alike. Those who promise change, only to be forgotten and betrayed once the power they seek is attained.
Is Riddler wrong? Not necessarily. Corruption is a powerful weapon used to turn good men around into a life of deviance. But is he going about it the right way? Again, not really. But what can one do when the judges who would oversee the cases of the men put away are as corrupt as those that are put in front of them. That’s where the brute force of those like Batman who answer to nobody but themselves and the code they abide by comes in. There’s a line that you can cross, and once you do you’re just like those you seek to destroy.

Now if you’re reading this, and thinking “Well geez, this all sounds a little familiar” you would be on the right track. While Batman movies/comics/games have been saying more or less the same thing for the last 80+ years, the difference lies entirely in the execution. At this point with all the source material available, it’s hard to get the underlying of Batman wrong. Everything lies in the performance that is given, the stakes that are held, and the technical work behind and inside the camera.

One of the most talked about and prevalent aspects of this film is the beautiful and at times chilling score by Michael Giacchino. With his imposing theme, to the beautiful undertones of “Ave Maria”, there’s a lot to love. It’s a soundtrack that has the intense seat-gripping horns and the calm harps that can mold themselves to fit into whatever scene writer Matt Reeves and Peter Craig throw at the audience. And then there’s the cinematography by Greig Fraser. He has one of the best eyes for what the camera can show us in a modern blockbuster. He’s done the great work for “Dune”, “Vice”, “Zero Dark Thirty”, and more, proving time and time again he’s a force to be reckoned with and one that ultimately should be rewarded with an even more impressive career going forward.

There’s so much to talk about, but there’s also so much movie to be had. And keeping in theme with having this review be as spoiler-free as possible, it must be urged that the words on this page can’t express how much this movie deserves to be seen. Of course it won’t have any problem with that, seeing as it has sold out its early access fan screenings days before the official release.

Rapid firing what this movie had that was especially lovely: shirtless Robert Pattinson—Colin Farrell doing a little Penguin walk while tied up—Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman (nothing specific here, just her entire presence)—incredible action work by stunt coordinators Darko Tuscan, Steve Griffin, and everybody else on the stunt team.

Overall, “The Batman” brings a lot of the same to the table, but does it with a lot more craft and precision than some other efforts. The Batman was a wonderful film, and personally I can’t wait to see the rest of the story unfold in future movies.

Reeves and Pattinson together have developed a more brooding and vengeful batman who is the most present figure in the movie. Reeves seems much more interested in diving deep into the "Batman" persona fully then trying to balance it out with the seemingly sidelined alter ego of Bruce Wayne. Pattinson shines as well as he can in the new (awesome looking) bat suit, of which he does roughly 85% of his scenes in. Zoe Kravitz did predictably great work in what I ultimately thought was a role and arc that could of used some more development or thought. Major all time batman movie highlights I will remember from this movie include: The Soundtrack, the car chase seen, and the Riddler prison scene. Expand

The emotional connection between Batman and friends like Alfred and Gordon isn't there at all. He doesn't care about them, I didn't care about him. The writing is mediocre, full of cliches, only the riddler stands out in this film. The director pushed too hard with the so called artistic shots, and the music was fine but so repetitive I started laughing near the end. On a brighter note - Paul Dano was exceptional and it was action-packed enough so it didn't feel like a 3-hour movie. It's a good film, but in my humble opinion it's not even close to Christopher Nolan's trilogy and the amazing achievement it had with the writing, cinematography and casting. Expand
