Not nearly as bad as i expected the movie to be. As a sonic fan i was suprised. NOTE: Despite what I say in this review, I still recommend that you see this movie if you love Sonic.

TLDR: Amazing CGI and action scenes. An okay, but family friendly script (didn't expect anything deep). Eggman = GOOD. Sonic = If your a fan that grew up with the games, this characterization of Sonic WILL disappoint you. Soundtrack is by far the worst part of the film. For Sonic, this is a horrible score and the reason the movie is a 6 to me. Sonic has some of the most iconic songs in the gaming industry. Expertly produced, performed, written music put together in a studio. The orchestral route was absolutely the wrong choice for a Sonic movie. Overall this movie isn't what long-time fans like myself wanted. I want sequels, but I want the next film to accurately represent the source material, and not bastardize it. Honestly, I'm just happy Sonic is in the spotlight, but I expect better.… Expand

I was really excited for this movie, especially after the huge amount of praise given to it on Twitter and from YouTubers. I finally got around to watching it, and I have very mixed opinions. I finally got around to watching it, and I have very mixed opinions. Sonic is just really, really annoying- I expected something more like the Sonic Boom TV show Sonic. Instead, he's just annoying and not very likeable. The movie is very obviously aimed at kids, but there is some fan service in there and I can appreciate that. My favourite scene out of the entire movie has to be the bar fight scene, that was really funny. I really feel like the movie doesn't go into much detail about who Dr Robotnik actually is and his origin story. Or why Sonic refers to him as Eggman. There really isn't much substance storywise, which is why I hope we get a prequel or sequel as the post-credit scene hints at. Overall, major disappointment, but a pretty decent film for a video game movie.… Expand

Overall the film was mediocre it's animation & character design was impressive but the plot seemed badly written. Along the film there were scenes that didn't make sense, some even coming out of nowhere and shouldn't belong in the film. One of the most confusing of these scenes was the first, Who is Sonic's carer / mother and where did she come from? Why isn't she a hedgehog instead of an owl? Etc.
But I am grateful for some changes that had been made for the film otherwise it would've clearly gotten terrible ratings and scared children… Expand

About robotnik... i would not talk, but is all about jim carrey being kim jarrey not robotnik, and well i like carrey but i don't think this represent robotnik, hope they fix this in the second movie.

Post credits scene give me hopes

Jim Carrey is pretty good in this movie, I'd say it's just like we are watching something from his previous roles in this movie which is pretty good. I saw the SANIC movie in theaters... And I was pleasantly surprised! I was going in thinking this was going to be another cringey "Cartoon characters from my childhood are thrown into live action, modern society and (attempts at) hilarityI saw the SANIC movie in theaters... And I was pleasantly surprised! I was going in thinking this was going to be another cringey "Cartoon characters from my childhood are thrown into live action, modern society and (attempts at) hilarity ensue." Similar to "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "The Smurfs." And Sonic was KINDA like one of those movies, but it was by far the most well executed of that kind of film.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” has a bit more charm than the aforementioned movies and it’s a movie that both a veteran Sonic fan and a newcomer can enjoy! Jim Carrey was excellent as Doctor Robotnik, it felt like I was watching him in his wacky 90’s days! James Marsden was actually pretty funny, not to mention REALLY fun to look at!… Expand

I did genuinely have fun watching this in theaters, but Sonic was just a little too immature for my tastes. While it was a good movie I think the user score is a bit too high. Some of the jokes were funny but there was a good bit of Gen Alpha humor, Sonic honestly felt like anyone that's in high school so he did feel kinda cringe but he wasn't aWhile it was a good movie I think the user score is a bit too high. It's an incredibly cheesy almost instantly forgettable movie that is greatly elevated by the performances of Schwartz and Carrey. If you want a simple but entertaining film and imbued with nostalgia for those who ever played a Sonic game, well here's an option.

If you're looking for something else, you will not find it here and incidentally you're deceiving yourself.

Although it only remains to ask if the film had still worked with the public and the critics without the change of image that Sonic had. Because as far as I know there was no change in the story.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is incredibly fun to watch with friends and yeah it’s basically one big meme but looking at the film from an objective standpoint, it’s meh. It’s some dumb fun to turn your brain off for an hour for. It’s some dumb fun to turn your brain off for an hour for. Jim Carrey is unsurprisingly the best part of the film. He brings so much charm and humor to his performance that it’s almost impossible to take your eyes off him once he appears on screen. He goes back to his 90’s comedic approach which is just do crazy things which work for his character. It’s nice to see him go back to his roots. The rest of the performances are fine. They aren’t terrible but they aren’t great either. They are perfectly fine for what they were given. The humor is very hit or miss. I found some jokes and transitions funny while I cringed at others. The film does take memes and inserts them into the movie such as Keanu Reeves and Sanic which I enjoyed. Most of the humor comes from unintentional jokes. Some of the lines of dialogue are so bad that they are hilarious. Speaking of dialogue, the script is really meh. It wasn’t completely awful but it wasn’t that great. The technical aspects of the film were pretty bland too. The cinematography, editing, and production design were all pretty bland and boring. The visual effects were very mediocre. Sonic’s design is pretty good though. 100 times better than the original design but everything else using special effects looks fine or not great. There are a couple of plot contrivances which were pretty dumb. Sonic can definitely just run to San Francisco with a map. He does not need to take a road trip. James Marsden’s character is labeled as a NATIONAL FUGITIVE yet no one recognizes him. He is able to get to the top of a building in San Francisco going through security with no disguise and no one notices. How do you not recognize a national fugitive? Although I had these issues, I was never bored. Sonic was able to keep me engaged throughout its hour and 40 minute runtime. Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog is really fun and Jim Carrey is great but its script and story elements don’t make it as great as I had hoped. It's ironically a 10/10 though.… Expand

Luckily, my cousins were watchin' this movie, so I got to see it. It was... alright, but story-wise it ain't nothin' special (pretty common for Sonic). The one thing that would've made me drop the score to a zero is Sonic doing the flossing thing from Fortnite. Not even the fart joke, the **** Fortnite dancing. As if the movie needed some reasons for me to hate it. When you resort to Fortnite "jokes" for laughs, you know you ain't **** when it comes to humor.

Also, Sonic isn't Flash nor Quicksilver (although comparable). He doesn't generate energy as he runs and he can't run so fast that time seems to stop so he can **** around with everyone or everything in the vicinity. Actually, there's a few times where he ain't even runnin' and time stops.

Anyway, the movie isn't meant to be taken seriously; it's just another Sonic continuity separate from all the other ones. I don't think they should make another one though.… Expand

You can tell Carrey's having a lot of fun in this role. He definitely knows what this movie is and he fully embraces the eccentric mad scientist role of Robotnik, coming through with 0 cringe-inducing jokes, lines, or scenes. I cannot say the same for Sonic or James Marsden's cop character. If you plan on seeing this, you will need to fully turn off your brain to enjoy it. Characters regularly make decisions and statements that don't make any sense and Sonic% speed is underutilized at several points purely in service of the plot. In its defense, the movie absolutely does not ask to be taken seriously. Unfortunately that still doesn't stop huge logical inconsistencies from breaking the illusion and immersion of it all. Sonic The Hedgehog is a dumb fun romp that doesn't quite overstay its welcome.… Expand

I honestly don't understand the massive hype surrounding this movie. It wasn't great or terrible. It was just kind of meh. I guess maybe I wasn't really in the prime demographic for this movie, as I am not a huge Sonic fan despite playing and enjoying some of the games. I think Sonic fans could get a kick out of it, but I'm not really sure since the movie had barely anything to do with the actual Sonic games. I'd recommend this movie to young children and big fans of the games, but not many others.… Expand

Slightly more bad than good in this family-friendly kids film. The rest of this film can be marked up to poorly veiled marketing (seriously, stop talking about the Olive Garden) and nonsense driven plot points. Without spoiling anything, in the trailer it reveals Sonic being able to be so fast that he can take the time to yawn and tap his foot when dozens of missiles are aimed directly at him yet he is able to be shot by a tranquilizer dart. Take that "logic" and apply it to the rest of the script and you'll understand what kind of writing we're dealing with.… Expand

Jim Carrey does pretty well, but the screenwriters tried way to hard to make his character "plausible" in the world, and all it did was distract from what makes Robotnik great. All his gadget have this kind of "realism" to them, which wasn't really welcome. This movie is made up of 3 elements that all work better on their own.
I don't really recommend this, it fails to deliver anything beyond what you'd expect from a Generic IconicCharacter Cash-Grab.… Expand

Why does this have a +8 audience score? It wasn’t as bad as everyone thought, but it was far from good. It had predictable tropes and plots, and was overall generic. The only genuinely great part was Ben Swartz having a blast voice acting as Sonic.

Why? Just... Why?!

A film with no real audience. Its a kids movie but Sonic has not been relevant for kids in well over a decade. Not viable for adults as it is clearly intended for immature audiences. This is a movie for nostalgic parentsWhy? Just... Why?!

A film with no real audience. Its a kids movie but Sonic has not been relevant for kids in well over a decade. Not viable for adults as it is clearly intended for immature audiences. This is a movie for nostalgic parents to subject their children to with all their "why back in my day" stories that will have kids groaning and rolling their eyes.

The film itself is barely mediocre with Carrey being the only real shining spot in the whole thing. That said, this is a film that should have never been made. Ill give 1 point for the people who worked to produce this, Ill give 1 point for Carrey and 1 point for it being a kids movie that ISNT controlled by the #EvilestCorporationOnEarth That is being exceptionally generous.

Its nowhere near the best video game based movie, but its far from the worst.… Expand

What is this Lord of the Rings? 8.8? This is Derectuve Pikachu meets Kangaroo Jack. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't expect it at all to be a masterpiece. I just had the deep hope it would not be the mess it actually is.
The beginning of the movie is almost excellent: we are introduced to the plot, Sonic is kind of attractive and lovable, the pace is great, everything is beautiful, everything is fine and clear. Since the beginning there are some really funny jokes, memes and easter eggs.

But as we go further in the plot the movie totally decompose itself in front of our amazed eyes. Firstly it can even stop itself from making immesurable inconsistencies and mistakes. How does nobody see Sonic when he is in 'hyper-speed' mode since he can't prevent himself to leave huge blue trails behind him? Since when can Sonic freeze time? Is he Flash? Don't think so! Why and how is Sonic concerned about some so-called hero leaving a ridiculous town? How does he manage to walk on vertical walls? How can he survive a fall from the top of a skyscrapper? How can he create electricity? How can the total world forget the hero is wanted as a terrorist?

Then comes the bar scene. I identify it as the moment where everything falls apart. Sonic died during this insane scene. How come nobody reacts to this blue huge hedgehog dancing among them? How could Sonic the hedgehog have the sentence 'have a bar fight' in his bucket list? Come one! He is an icon for (young and old) children! Why do we have to overcome all this coarseness and vulgarity? Why does it have to be so childish? Is this movie for adults or kids? Because both of them don't find their count here. After that I didn't even want to know of this mess ends.

As we slowly go away from this awful terrific horrible disgarceful ugly bar scene we begin to see Sonic from every angle. And so realize that he really is ugly! I know they already did an effort on characters' design but hey: we see Sonic's nostrils and they are awful! His spines and 'hair' are disgusting too. The closer the camera gets to him the more repelling he appears.

I guess I have to talk about Carrey as Robotnik in here. So let's do it: he is the main reason I don't give this movie a 0/10. Yes he is overacting like in 'The Mask' or in 'Ace Ventura'. He is the author of 80% of the jokes I laughed at. Doesn't mean he is not a total loser. His button-gloves are terrible and useless. I wonder how many people he killed just to catch a strange hedgehog... He even blast one of the seven wonders! The end in town is particularly ridiculous.

There are some interesting ideas and jokes all along but the final product is really ugly. Plus Sega can't stop putting their names everywhere: at the beginning and at the end just to make sure everyone saw them. Yeah you have a lot of money, congrats you greedy uninspired people. I surely don't want to see this movie again and I guess this is the perfect proof of its absolute mediocrity.… Expand

to say I was disappointed wouod he an understatement. I felt actively drained of energy and patience while watching, nearly every aspect of the movie was bad, and 90% of the jokes fell flat.

The plot has a terrible pace, which I would chock up to the introduction of elements that are not given adequate time to stew and thus feel shallow or, in some cases, just plain confusing. Why do they bother creating an original “mother figure” character in the form of some owl just to kill her off after three minutes and never mention her again? When she created the portal to send Sonic to Earth so he would be safe from the army that was after him, why didn’t she go with? The army wasn’t after her and she got taken out by a single arrow, so am I to believe she held them ALL back so Sonic could escape? How did Sonic’s human companions surprise him by redecorating their attic to resemble the cave he grew up in while he was hiding on Earth? Sonic never mentions it to anyone. When did they have time to go retrieve Sonic’s belongings without him knowing? How does Tails show up on Earth looking for Sonic when it is stated by the owl mother that Sonic has to stay hidden? I get that he goes out anyway, but I can’t imagine he had much time to make friends given his situation. Besides, Sonic is sent to Earth as a young child and we aren’t even given a glimpse of Tails before he shows up at the end in a bit of poorly implemented fan service. So the plot stinks, but the biggest injustice is that the writers take absolutely zero advantage of the property they’re writing for. Whether you’re a fan of Sonic games or Sonic memes, there is little here to excite. Ben Schwartz does say “Gotta go fast” in a rather anticlimactic fashion, and they do briefly show that terrible Sonic drawing but, beyond those things, we just get references to modern culture. Sonic flosses and makes a joke about Amazon and Find My Phone. In a more canonical sense, the movie pulls very little inspiration from Sonic’s history and is too wrapped up with presenting its own stupid ideas. Sonic can travel to different places, be they cities or planets, by using rings to create portals. Why not replace those with the Chaos Emeralds, which have been used in established canon to enable teleportation by way of Chaos Control? Sonic loses one of his quills early on, which Robotnik finds and uses to enhance his own machinery. Why not use the Chaos Emeralds, which Robotnik uses throughout established canon to power up his machinery? Sonic has this “ultimate form” type thing where he wants to protect his friends so he gets all epic and flashy and has lightning and junk and becomes super powerful. Thing is, Sonic already has a super form. It’s called Super Sonic and he attains this form by, say it with me now, using the god damn Chaos Emeralds. This team of inept writers utterly fail to understand what Sonic fans of all kinds enjoy about the franchise.

Also, the main dude and his girlfriend adopt Sonic as their weird blue alien son at the end of the movie. I don’t remember anyone’s name because they’re all extremely forgettable characters.

Jim Carrey was not a good choice for Robotnik. The kids in my particular audience didn’t laugh at a single thing he said.

The writers don’t understand the theoretical physics of slow-motion. It is very annoying to watch.

I've been a Sonic fan for almost 10 years and I decided not to trust my intuition and give this movie a chance even though I knew perfectly that it won't be good. I couldn't believe I refrained from leaving on the 15th minute of the screening. I stayed with the hope that eventually the movie would get better. I went with two friends of mine and every 3 minutes we were commenting on almost every scene with disgust and the cringy absurdities. My father who still says the red Sonic, sadly, is much more informed than the people who made the movie. Everything starts with a scene, which has nothing to do with everything we know about Sonic's childhood. Sonic is one of a kind and was raised by an OWL?? Then some characters appear similar to the Knuckles clan who attack Sonic and he has to escape to the world of humans. Why? This clan was ancient, centuries before Sonic was born and also they wouldn't attack him without a purpose. They do it for money and Sonic doesn't seem very wealthy. And according to the movie, they want his superpower, which is an absurd notion since they can't steal it. And his power is ELECTRICITY! Since when? So many games show that electricity is even dangerous for Sonic! He can stop the power in a whole city and make explosions with electric waves. Then, even more hilarious, we see Sonic stopping time. Yes he may be fast but he can't do such a thing. And at the same time, with all these exaggerated powers, Sonic would completely lose them and instead of spin dash and destroy robots, as he has always been doing without a problem, we see him absolutely helpless so the human policeman has to fight f while driving a car at high speed. Looks like the creators of the movie haven't understood the hedgehog's powers at all. He runs fast but it doesn't mean that his whole body is fast. Here's proof - when he runs, his arms fly behind his body. During the whole movie they say that Sonic is lonely and doesn't have a single friend. Just because they didn't think of adding even one more Sonic character. I thought that the movie would be fine because the creators took into consideration the fans' opinion and they changed the disgusting first design. After all there was almost nothing to please us the true Sonic fans. So I don't know who the movie was made for, since my friends who didn't even know who Sonic was, left disappointed too. For years we fans have been saying that we don't want the other characters to be neglected. There are 50+ Sonic characters and the screenplay forgot about all of them and made Sonic a desperate loner. A human policeman is the only character we get,and of course Eggman, as always. Before I went to the movie I expected to see Tails, because of the rumors I had heard. I found out that he really did appear but after the ending credits, in a scene which is a spoiler for the next movie. Every time Sonic was complaining about not having a best friend I had a hard time not shouting "TAILS". If the movie had been made by Sonic fans, it would have been much better. I can't imagine how SEGA approved it, obviously they cared just for the money. To make things worse, Sonic's personality was completely changed. He has always been a brave, daring leader, ready for anything and in the movie he is like a tender scared kitten, lonely and desperate. I can't believe they made Sonic so pathetic. He might be cute but that's not him. The Sonic I've known the one in the movie are two completely different characters. Instead of being cool he is helpless and needing protection. He is even stupid. The people in the movie likewise acted inadequately like big fools. Most of the time Eggman didn't look like himself either. I just can't imagine the evil genius, who makes perfect robots to be driving a truck. And Sonic the fastest creature alive, driving a car and being scared that he won't be able to escape. Why? He is so fast. Why does he need a car? As for Eggman - how hard was it to remember his name? In the scene where they asked him about his name, he said: My name is DOCTOR. Ivo is a hard name, yes. Actually, there wasn't anything special about the Sonic movie except for the name. It was too much of a parody and the mistakes were numerous, there were not any familiar settings, music, the easter eggs were hardly enough. Its wasn't even funny and I am a person who laughs easily. Why spend so much money to achieve a result which will not please any true Sonic fan? The only part of the movie which made me happy was the SEGA intro nut it was so short. The movie didn't convey the magic of Sonic, as true fans understand it. Sadly it won't renew kids' interest to this character. We won't be seeing kids running around pretending to be Sonic. If there is ever a sequel, please recruit people who care about Sonic as consultants. It is pointless to make a movie about a beloved character if the people involved do not have the slightest idea what's essential for this.… Expand

The plot was a cliché yet somehow it got even emptier.
Good that there's James Marsden, and Jim Carrey's over exaggerated performance actually made this film kind of funny.
Overall, don't spend a penny on this.
