If you're a Sonic lover you will definitely like it. However don't expect any context from games and any backstory.

I didn't go with specialy high expectations, I was hoping for Jim Carry to give good performance. He was great in the role as I expected, but the rest of the movie was actually really good too. I thin it was best video game based film ever.

The movie has a lackluster plot but makes up for it with its fanservice and actors. Jim carrey as Dr. Robotnik steals the show.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) provides a refreshing new personality to the one and only Sonic. It's fun and entertaining even if you didn't have any contact with the franchise before

I know this review is 2 years late, but I still have to give my opinion on it.
I think this movie is a must for every Sonic fan out there.
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik/Eggman is just comedy gold, you can't take the characters he plays seriously afterwards, but I've never been able to do that with Dr. Robotnik/Eggman.
He also fits in very well with this mad scientist Robotnik/Eggman with his crazy nature.
Sonic's behavior is like that of a teenager who often cracks jokes, many of which I remember but others were also strange.
Whether you like the story that Sonic had to move from another universe to planet Earth because the echidnas hunted him down is up to you.
Video game adaptations are mostly bad than good, but this film convinced me otherwise that video game adaptations can be better than expected.

A very good video game movie.
It's a joy to have a good one after so much crap they give us.
And if you want to see other entertaining video game movies, there is also the sequel to this one and Detective Pikachu.

After watching that first trailer I thought the beloved Sega mascot was going to have a lot more working against him in this film than just a disturbing new look. Yet, I went to see it anyways out of appreciation for the studio's decision to admit their mistake and redesign the character. Something I believe they deserve to be rewarded at the box-office for. I ended up walking away pleasantly surprised. Sonic gets a superhero origin story. One with a surprisingly complex and rather bizarre supporting lore. A pretty good job was done crafting a narrative fit for theatre screens out of a game series that's not exactly known for having riveting writing. The titular hedgehog establishes his place in the world, meets his archnemesis, and even sets up a few sequels without any major hitches. The only things I can see that might anger purists are Sonic now being called an alien and his new electric powers. I highly doubt the outcry will be that large though.

You can tell this cute, funny adventure is aimed primarily at kids. Although I have heard it said there are some raunchy jokes. They either went completely over my head or weren't as egregious to me as they were to others. So personally I still say this is very family-friendly. It is something parents might want to consider though.

Yet, none of this is to say that the movie isn't still very juvenile. In fact its childish nature is probably the biggest knock one could have against it. Portions of the humor fail to connect with anyone outside of the youngest members of the audience. I mean there's a fart gag for crying out loud.

The thing that makes me more excited for a sequel to this as opposed to, say, Detective Pikachu (despite that being the better movie) are the human characters. The thought of having to put up with Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton again in order to see more of Reynolds-chu being adorable and quippy makes me ill. I could deal with Marsden and Sumpter's return however, as they were genuinely likable and never irritating.

Really the only thing that has me worried about a potential follow-up is Carrey. Never really been a fan of his particular brand of comedy. He was remarkably restrained here though so I found him tolerable. However, if he's let off the leash in a sequel I could see that really turning me off.

Overall, this turned out much better than history would have dictated. As much as that redesign undoubtedly helped make much of the film easier to swallow than it otherwise would have been, it really owes its success to adopting the modern superhero movie formula. Which proves to still be a winning format even in this extremely child-oriented state. It is particularly indebted to the X-Men series, which you can see during Sonic's high-speed antics where the world remains frozen around him just like Quicksilver. Sonic the Hedgehog might not blow any minds, but it is another sign that the infamous videogame movie curse is ending, if not already over.

Not the sort of movie that's likely to score well with critics (for some reason, crtics often can't seem to enjoy anything that's remotely vanilla; if it's not profound, it's no good apparently), but in my opinion, it was a blast. It's weirdNot the sort of movie that's likely to score well with critics (for some reason, crtics often can't seem to enjoy anything that's remotely vanilla; if it's not profound, it's no good apparently), but in my opinion, it was a blast. It's weird to think now that when the trailer first launched soon after Detective Pikachu's, it very clearly paled in comparison and people were convinced that Pokémon would come out on top. Since the redesign though, Sonic's done a complete 180 and after seeing it, I am happy to say this is frankly the best video-game-adapted movie ever.

Something that became apparent to me early on was how endearing and fun not just Sonic, but every character was in their own way, including Tom and Maddie. The real show-stealer however is Jim Carrey as Robotnik. They give a bit of a backstory for his personality, and Carrey plays up the absurdity of this personality to silly extremes, which made for some of the film's highlight scenes.

Sonic is also a very likeable character, despite having many jokes and quips that often don't land. Ben Schwartz does a perfect voice for him however, and Sonic's super speed makes for some great visual gags. There is one speed-related gag in particular part way through the film that made for one of the coolest comedy action sequences I've seen in recent memory; from a visual standpoint, it might even turn out to be one of my favorite sequences from a movie this year, even if it's not entirely original.

As far as flaws go, I'd say there are mainly two. Firstly, Sonic's whole universe and it's mechanics (such as rings, the function they play, Sonic's speed, his back story etc) is a LOT to fit into a film that's trying to be fairly straightforward. Because of this, they don't really do a great deal to explain anything too much - they'll give you an explanation for what rings do for example, but won't explain why and just sort of expect you to accept this because it's in the games. This example didn't bother me too much, but there was another instance regarding Sonic's backstory that I thought was a little unecessary - it was just some extra lore that was never established in the games that felt a little unecessary. I understand the function it played on the overaching story, but it also bothered to introduce us to a new character who we only ever see once, and I just felt that was a bit of a waste. These issues however were only minor and didn't hinder the experience for me too much.

Easily the bigger issue however was the film's runtime - although the film isn't trying to be a huge epic, it still could've benefited from an extended runtime for some more detailed character and plot development. Unfortunately the message that the film's trying to bring up about "loneliness" really didn't have much of an effect on me, which was likely due to the short runtime not leaving enough room to weave any kind of profound moral messaging. I also think that the climax of the film could've felt far more epic had there been a greater buildup of ups and downs before that moment.

Ultimately though, Sonic the Hedgehog is not only a good video game to film adaption, it's a GOOD MOVIE. If you're a Sonic fan, you'll enjoy it a lot and if you're not, you'll still have a lot of fun with the zany plot and characters. Yes, it's a fairly straightforward, vanilla plot but this was all this movie needed. It's also left a lot of potential for a sequel, as you realize towards the end particularly that there is a lot of this world left to explore (and if you stick around to midway through the credits, it becomes clear that the film makers likely have this in mind)

A film aimed at children with a fairly simple plot, full of Easter eggs for parents and fans who are going to watch the movie.

Do not expect a faithful characterization of the game, it is like The Archie comics or IDW, a world of its own with concepts and ideas from the world of Sonic created by Sega ... ̶o̶r̶ ̶a̶ ̶p̶a̶s̶t̶ ̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶S̶o̶n̶i̶c̶ ̶2̶0̶0̶6̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶w̶e̶ ̶d̶i̶d̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶ ̶k̶n̶o̶w̶.̶

Jim Carrey is not the living image of Eggman, but I do not dislike what he does with the character, he is entertaining and has a certain arrogant touch that makes him laugh. I would not say "save the movie" because it is not bad, but it does make it much more entertaining, especially when it is focused on children.

If it has a sequel, I'll go see it.

What I likedWell done light-hearted movie based on an iconic 16 bit era videogame. Plot is standard for this kind of movie: Main character is tossed in our universe and must overcome some inner and outer obstacles...with some human help. What I liked about the movie isn't plot "per se" or dialogues or specials effects...but the fact that this film successfully integrate together many aspects.
For a film based on a Platformer game is a little miracle!! 1) We have lots of things from the games that are well integrated in the movie and make sense (for example... Rings, Spin Dash, Green hill zone, Idle waiting animation, Power Sneakers, Robotnik's robots red "eyes"...) 2) Sonic character design now resemble the original after the notorious trailer (so the production seems to listen to Fans)
3) Sonic and Eggman have a lots of screen time. 4) Human supporting sidekick do not steal screen time to main protagonists and is likable.
5) Lots of Sega easter eggs..even Sanic meme !
6) Great Jim C. Give this a try, it may surprise you

It's fast and the slow motion scenes are fun to watch. The acting is really good. I especially like Carey's performance. The humor is fair. It will give you many smiles but no hard laugh. There are holes everywhere in that type of film, and it's surely something that is harder to accept. Example: the role and decisions of the US army. I give it 72%. I don't want to review this movie the same way I review other movies as this is a kids film, clearly aimed at kids.

Video game movies tend to be horrible. The only remotely decent video game movie has been Detective Pikachu which was not great but a step in the right direction. Likewise, Sonic the Hedgehog continues this step in the right direction but is not great. The movie itself is an enjoyable time and will keep you having a good time for its 90 minute runtime.

I am not a huge fan of Sonic but I have played a fair amount of Sonic games to know enough about him. I can with confidence say that this will no doubt satisfy Sonic fans. It feels really clear that the director and people behind this movie actually care about Sonic. This movie in no way feels like a cash grab (especially considering they delayed the movie and redesigned Sonic to satisfy fans). Some of the things I enjoyed in this movie include Ben Schwartz as Sonic who completely embodies the Personality of Sonic. Additionally, the other best part of this movie is Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Seeing Jim Carrey give a performance that is reminiscent of his earlier days was as enjoyable as you expect it to be. James Marsden also does a good job and delivers some good chemistry with Sonic. Overall, the human characters are actually all okay which is surprising as usually in movies with CGI characters as focus; the human characters tend to be really bad (looking at you Godzilla King of monsters). The action scenes are fun and enjoyable, especially when Sonic does his slow mo scenes.

The movie has flaws but it might not really matter that much considering it is a movie aimed at kids but adults who grew up with Sonic will no doubt watch this. The story is very simplistic but there are so many things that happen in the movie that don't seem to have any consequences. For example, the amount of destruction happening seems to result in no consequences. The movie also uses a lot of cliches that have occurred in so many movies by now, it makes the movie very predictable. The movie also has so many weird product placement that are so blatant that it genuinely makes you wonder (you're going to come out of this movie thinking about Olive Garden for sure...). Finally, kids might not enjoy this movie cause at the Cinema I was at; there was a kid who couldn't focus or bother keeping their eyes on the movie so that might be saying something.

In the end, Sonic fans are going to enjoy this movie, people who grew up in the 90s are going to enjoy this movie, fans of Jim Carrey are definitely going to enjoy this movie, and kids/families are going to enjoy this movie (most kids anyway). You are going to come out of this movie having a good time and isn't that the most important thing for a kids movie anyways?

There is nothing immediately wrong with the film, and for a kids movie it honestly isn't that bad. I can say the story is more coherent then 90% of the games and unlike Mario Brothers the movie doesn't destroy the mythology of the character. Now by all means is this not that great of a movie. It does what every origin story does when you introduce a character from another world is show us magical cool worlds but have the entire film based on earth. That par for the course and the safest route to take but that's the issue it's so safe that it ends up being boring. Sonic has some funny lines and for the most part is entertaining. When he isn't though he acts like a kid hopped up on PCP and his shtick gets tiring quick. James Marsden is continuing his career with him talking to little furry creatures. He is supposed to be the audience for the film; asking questions for exposition and such. He doesn't his job well and hell they even try to make him assist Sonic so he actually is doing something. Jim Carrey hams up his performance to perfection. He pulls all the stuff you love from early Jim Carrey and turns it from funny to evil. He honestly was great casting for the games villain Dr. Robotnik. Jim Carrey's energy works stupid well with the kids movie. I guarantee you won't be checking your phone while he is on screen. Overall the movie isn't bad and for a rental it is very serviceable. If you have kids this is a no-brainer and a must they will love the hell out of this. Expand

It is made for a more childlike audience, but you understand a lot of references and tributes to players from the 90s, and it was great to see Jim Carrey acting again, and he was one of the highlights of the film, Sonic was very beautiful and faithful , I'm glad they changed.
In general, it's the best video game-based movie I've ever seen!

The plot is simple , but working , almost all the characters are well shown and spelled out (except for Tom's wife) , Jim Carrey as always the fire , but not one he took out the film , it's a shame that a lot of the jokes lost their meaning because of Russian localization of (generally tolerated) , arches not bad , but the same theme with letovym list I liked the film , as it managed to submit the story so I was wondering for all 100 minutes , went twice on it (1 time with my younger sister , 2 times with a friend , sister certainly liked but a friend said that a lot of illogical moments and the friendship between the main characters is not believable , what I strongly disagree with) but at the end of the film when I realized that this is the end, I realized that I was not enough of those 100 minutes , and when I was leaving the hall and the scene began after the credits with Tails, the whole room froze and watched enthusiastically, and this is what it says. This is a good seed for a trilogy, and given the fees in the world, there will definitely be a continuation, but I left the film, humor-unfortunately on 3+ or someone on 4 -, but in his defense I want to say that all the jokes were invented by actors (almost all) Jim - full improvisation, and James Marsden and Ben Schwartz came up with jokes together and for all this they should pay tribute, and if you leave only the funniest and original jokes, then you get such an average super hero film from MARVEL for example , but they also joked like Ozo with all their strength, there were a lot of jokes, but the overall quality failed, Sonic cute, Ben Schwartz gave him a great voice and facial expressions, thank him for this, James Marsden also plays cool, cool actor, waiting for more movies with him. Paramount with its advertising campaign (advertising was everywhere , even in the diary ru full screen) and the incident with the design (by which the film machipisa a little and raised respect in the face of the people when they redid it) and the sequel (and as for me one is not limited to) 1000% was in the plans (given the post-credits scene) and I was just a little, and it seems to me (*put on tin foil hat*) WHAT IS the background of the Paramount , the first was a redesign, and the second is to make a nice movie for the fans and to plant new people in the sonic (FAC new vagi like me) so they went the next film))0) But seriously it was right from the first Paramount film to do a simple and introductory , to attract a lot of people, and finally to deal with Canon (because in games going on some sort of game) the whole backstory left on the second film and rightly so , but I hope the sequel will not disappoint me , because part of the bet I made on him in General the film more than many in it see , but not brilliant masterpiece , have to work on the sequel , and I'm not a Sonic fan (except that little new VAG) and my opinion is completely biased and sometimes objectively , generally not a waste of money))) And I was just freaking out the people who compare the movie with the Smurfs , when it's just not the right comparison , first the Smurfs no character at all , and with them nothing can be done and come up with in the future (this is the main difference) and Sonic is a character , not bad and in games and serielle had a lot of ideas and twists , SEGA just very crooked things are made and any communication between the games is almost there (Boolean sure) , the second is the antagonist in the Smurfs it is completely empty and he is evil because evil and not Navid Smurfs simply because when the Eggman is, before history , has character and is a lot to think of and such as the Smurfs , he was not, as critics in the film to not valued because they do not know the context, and ACCORDINGLY they did not see the simple beauty and meaning of the film , and that's how it should work... This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie could be a catastrophy if made with the old, highly criticizes Sonic model. But it's really watchable and nice, if you already know what to expect.
The "new" sonic is very charismatic and its visual appeal is, without a doubt, one of the main reasons for that. Its cute, evokes directly the design we all know and love, the animation process is great and voice acting is kinda good.
The movie plot is just regular - not that we were expecting a mindblowing plot here, but some things are kinda thrown at us just to keep the things going. Like, Sonic's "quails" have infinite energy? Or even his bucket list? Too cliché, even for a movie of this category.

Jim Carrey has his moments, though. His dances and characterization are funny and he kinda steals the spot. IF you're a Carrey fan, there is a full share of him for you here.

They should have also improved / changed some things imho (Spoilers):
- Sonic as an alien? Really? Another dimension or another world, ok. Another planet was really weird.
- There are a lot of incongruencies regarding his speed. He can be REALLY quick at some times, almost on the impossible side (bar fight), and be stupidly slow when needed (ex fight with Robotnik or climbing the pyramid). Yeah, a movie about a blue hedgehog do not have to be realistic, but still...
- I was expecting him to become Super Sonic at the end. It didn't happen and it seemed like a huge opportunity lost. But then the post credit scene kinda suggests that he'll heve other opportunity for that. - They should have made Robotnik trapping small critters and animals inside the drones, like the game, as a source of energy of some kind. That would be a nice touch directly linked to the original game.

Anyway, aside from that, suprisingly great film. Very Detective Pikachu, i'm amazed Sonic wasn't voiced by Ryan Reynolds. But yeah, probably the best kids or family film I seen in ages. I want to add I think Jim Carrey is perfect. Not just in he was very good, but doesn't outstay his welcome as Robotnick. They could've gone the Suicide Squad route of having the bigger stars as leads that aren't meant to be the leads but they didn't. Kudos.

PROS:
-Sonic’s new design. Seriously, it gives the movie a lot of points right off the bat. Props to Paramount for making a rare move and listening to criticism for the better of your film.
-Jim Carrey gives one of the best performances of his career as Doctor Robotnik. His performance in this film is manic, wild, and INSANELY entertaining. It’s highly reminiscent of the earlier roles that shot Jim Carrey into stardom, and any Jim Carrey fan would be doing themselves a disservice NOT to witness his performance.
-The action in this movie is surprisingly well-done and exciting. It’s well-shot, and pretty unique compared to other movies out there. It really shows potential for the action if this (inevitably) becomes a franchise.
-Ben Schwartz is great as Sonic. He imbues the protagonist with this child-like giddiness, and gives Sonic more personality than he’s ever had in the games.
-The human drama focusing on local cop Tom Wachowski is, surprisingly, not boring. I was invested in it, mostly due to James Marsden’s surprisingly charismatic performance.
-The second credit scene was perfect. I won’t spoil it, but it sent me back to the days of playing the classic Sonic games as a kid, and I LOVED it.

CONS:
-The humor didn’t work for me. It goes above the low-bar that a lot of lower grade kids movies go below (The Emoji Movie.....), but it’s still not very good. There are flatulence jokes, and numerous pop culture jokes, and....Sonic flosses (the dance). The jokes really fell on their face I’d say....8 times outta 10.
-The numerous product placements in this movie are so in your face and nonsensical that they get distracting sometimes. From the blatant references and pandering to things like Zillow.com, or Olive Garden, to Tom ordering Sonic a Mello Yellow at the bar. It gets distracting at a certain point.

OVERALL: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is probably the best video game movie ever made, which is saying A LOT for the genre. It’s a super fun movie that should make for an entertaining family movie night, and should satisfy most Sonic fans.

The story is well-paced, while being a bit run-of-the-mill, the characters are heartfelt and well-written, the action is exciting while onscreen, but the use of the source material is rare, only showing up as Easter eggs or minor details. In fact, I feel quite comfortable in saying that 8-10 year old me would have really treasured this movie. It's bright, well-paced and effervescent in spirit. You get to see Jim Carrey try his damnedest to conjure up the 90's version of himself that we all fell in love with. There's some humor that works. All of the aforementioned attributes are eons further than what I expected we'd get, and I suppose that's worthy of note. That being said, though, it's far from a perfect product. In fact, the mere presence of that word -- "product" -- in this review is a bit of a Freudian slip, I'm afraid. I understand it's hard to hide the inherent bankability of a movie when it's about one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but I could have done without the three or four scenes of brand placement strewn about the picture. Also, you'll notice above that I said, "there's some humor that works," with the keyword in that sentence being "some." A lot of the jokes will go over well with kids (see the "floss," farts, etc.) but I'm betting most adults will grow tired of that and the material that's supposed to be geared more towards them, namely the pop culture references. Again, it's imperfect, but I'm a bit surprised at how watchable, nay, enjoyable a lot of it ended up being. Expand

We all thought Assassin Creed was going to destroy the curse of terrible video game adaptations, but this blue hedgehog sure did.

You know what stuck with me the most was how Sonic says he has watched the 1994 action movie 'Speed' loads of times, so does that mean he witnessed Dennis Hopper getting decapitated on endless repeat? Or how about Beth Grant being run over by a bus? Makes you think sometimes.

Anywhere...not a great movie, but man this could have been so much worst. I am glad the studios listened to fans and changed that revolting character design on Sonic. It is just too bad that the animates were laid off after the studio was closed. Yikes.

Jim Carry, even at the age of 58, has not lost that chaotic energy. Robotnik's dance scene was easily the highlight. What is more impressive is Carry improvised the dance scene and recommended the song "Where Evil Grows". James Marsden sure does love cgi animals. I guess this completes the trilogy. 'Enchanted', 'Hop', and now 'Sonic'. Still likable and talented though. So yeah, it's an average family adventure comedy that never failed to entertain. This is coming from a guy who is not a diehard fan of the character or game series, but still found some enjoyment out of it.

As far as the Sonic redesign, that was an intentional marketing gimmick.

This film adaptation of Sega's most well-known video game franchise is firmly placed in "okay" ground; neither terrible nor amazing.

The plot here is that Sonic (who in the film looks mostly good, although his eyes are separated which is a letdown); an alien hedgehog who has the power of super speed, escapes to Earth for his own safety, then lives a solitary life. However, a series of events lead to him being discovered and pursued by the evil Dr. Robotnik, who wants to use his super speed powers. Thus, Sonic teams up with a cop to escape Robotnik and get back to safety.

First of all, I feel that putting Sonic on Earth was a missed opportunity plot-wise that makes the film as a whole seem rather generic and uninventive. A plot that saw him visiting more of the vibrant areas of the games would have made for a more interesting and engaging film. Instead, we're left with a rather generic "normal guy helps mischievous talking animal" story.

In addition to that, the film clearly sees children as its main audience. Plot developments are very predictable, and the injection of a specific current pop culture trend (not once, but twice) is in my opinion a bad move that will cause the film to age quickly.

However, there are good points. Robotnik is played very well, seeming faithful to the games while putting a new spin on the character. The use of rings as portals is a nice touch. Sonic's quips are generally funny. Emotional moments, while predictable, seem genuine.

Ultimately, this is fine to watch. It's not bad, but it's not particularly good either. Still, I think the Sonic franchise has more film potential, and I hope that's tapped into with a potential sequel.

Outside of the novelty of seeing Sonic and Jim Carrey as Eggman, nothing really sticks out. Except for the large amount of plot holes. It's very generic without much references to the games. I would say it is slightly above average. But even for sonic fans, this might not be that exciting. The only real reason I would recommend this is for Sonic Movie 2. Expand

Free Screenings FTW, am I right?

Oh, how I love expecting a movie to be fun, only for that to still finish itself in a pleasant surprise... I actually kinda loved the Sonic movie. Yes, THE Sonic movie that suffered in production hell that is also (luckily) making its money back at the Box Office.

But it also confirms that Paramount is in serious need of "original" content inside some Franchise fare, in an era post-MI: Fallout. BumbleBee succeded for ET-ing the franchise in hopes of a good Transformers movie, while Terminator Dark Fate (which I still love) "Force Awakened" itself in making a movie we've all seen before.

Enter now Sonic The Hedgehog, which has nothing surprising in store for everyone, and uses (once again) its ET structure purely to please all families, instead of being A true Videogame Movie. At the same time, though, it's a weird mix. As if Spielberg asked for some drugs by SEGA, and ended up making a "supposed" sequel to ET that is so rushed and so fast (which makes sense in a way for the titular character), it's hard to get a break and pause itself, and when it does, it's both in the most random of places and tries to give the movie some heart. The breaks reek so much of a 90s movie, it's kinda unintentionally hilarious.

What also makes up for its similarity is the comeback of Jim Carrey as his "normal" self (oh, and also Dr. Robotnik, but who really cares about him, I guess?). Dear God, how I missed his crazy self in a theatrical release is just like how I missed seeing Joe Pesci in theaters. His Robotnik didn't really work for me that much, as he plays the 2000's Villain we've seen in Superhero Movies like Hulk or Fantastic 4 (he's a Villain...because!!)

And what really shocked me in a sense (besides the new design)... Junkie XL's Score. Going from Alita and Terminator to Sonic really gives you shock values, heh...

So... that's that! Sonic is monstrously fun, and to think about that is like thinking there's an alternate universe where Troll And I was actually a really good videogame... Oh, wait. That doesn't exist, and it's for good

Better than most videogame adaptations made in the recent past.
But Carrey is it, and almost everything worthy to go and see this movie.

Not a die hard Sonic fan. I did play the games when I was young but not enough to remember any of the story lines. This movie is fun and caters to both young and adult audiences. I enjoyed it in the theater and own it on Blu Ray.

The positives:
-The visual effects and everything were pretty good, including Sonic's more faithful redesign.
-Sonic and the rest of the cast are very entertaining, although clearly Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik are more interesting to me than the other characters (for obvious reasons).
-The origin story of Sonic adds something new to him that really makes you feel for him during both his best and worst moments throughout the adventure.

The negatives:
-Some characters either don't have a legitimate reason to be there or feel like they have too much going on. Carrey as Robotnik especially fits the latter, although I haven't seen much of Jim Carrey in a long while, so that may just be me.
-The plot, while still pretty decent, is just as cliched and predictable--if not rushed at times--as some critics have said. And very rarely, if ever at all, are the tropes involved played around with. This movie needed either an additional re-write or two, or at least been given a longer running time (not like Avengers: Endgame, but maybe more like the first Avengers).

Overall, this movie was a lot of fun for me. I'd say this is definitely worth seeing with the kids.

A decent film in the context of friendship with the different, the other, the alien, impaired by the paradox that the protagonist Sonic is more credible than Dr. Robotnik, a Jim Carrey who exaggerates in the cartoonish.

To give credit where it is do, it felt great going into the film knowing that the team cared enough about the sonic fans to change the character designs from the ground up.

Overall the film was honestly not amazing. Instead of spinning a more exciting story, they opted for a cheaper film with very little in the way of sets, scenes and the like, and even the overall CGI was able to be toned down by having practical sets. I get it, they didn't have a big budget, so with what there was, it was not terrible. It just felt a bit generic.

Still, at the end of the day, I felt like I could just kick back and relax and watch something wholesome. sonic or no sonic, the story was simple and wholesome. In this cynical world, I just want to get away from it all and see a beloved videogame icon have a fun adventure. It delivered on that.

In the end I felt like I only got a small taste of what I really hoped for, this was more of a prologue than a real epic adventure and that is okay. But all I can say, is that I'm ready for the sequel that they very clearly are setting up for.

I take off most of my points for the shameless product placements. That took me out of the film hard, and brought me back to the world weary cynicism I was trying to escape. I can't even eat at olive garden, and if you think I have enough money to even think about browsing homes on zillow you are sorely mistaken.

Jim Carry felt like a blast from the past, and while I would have liked an actor to play robotnik like how his actual character is, it was passable for me, and the over the top goofy aspect appealed to my love of Ace Ventura, thinking I'd never see such acting from him again.

I'm not a huge sonic fan or a film watcher, but I can easily say this film made me crack a small smile for once. So with that I suggest it.
