Why does this have a +8 audience score? It wasn’t as bad as everyone thought, but it was far from good. It had predictable tropes and plots, and was overall generic. The only genuinely great part was Ben Swartz having a blast voice acting as Sonic.

Why is this live action? it hurts the movie a whole lot. I did genuinely have fun watching this in theaters, but Sonic was just a little too immature for my tastes. Haven't taken my chances with the second film since from what I've seen on tv spots and trailers, Sonic is still too rambunctious for my tastes. Jim Carrey is pretty good in this movie, I'd say it's just like we are watching something from his previous roles in this movie which is pretty good. By no means is it a benchmark in any regard aside from the realms of its own, still woeful, little sub-genre (that of the "video game adaptation" one) "Sonic The Hedgehog" is also nowhere near the atrocity we all feared it would be after thatBy no means is it a benchmark in any regard aside from the realms of its own, still woeful, little sub-genre (that of the "video game adaptation" one) "Sonic The Hedgehog" is also nowhere near the atrocity we all feared it would be after that fateful trailer dropped back in Spring of 2019. In fact, I feel quite comfortable in saying that 8-10 year old me would have really treasured this movie. It's bright, well-paced and effervescent in spirit. You get to see Jim Carrey try his damnedest to conjure up the 90's version of himself that we all fell in love with. There's some humor that works. All of the aforementioned attributes are eons further than what I expected we'd get, and I suppose that's worthy of note. That being said, though, it's far from a perfect product. In fact, the mere presence of that word -- "product" -- in this review is a bit of a Freudian slip, I'm afraid. I understand it's hard to hide the inherent bankability of a movie when it's about one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but I could have done without the three or four scenes of brand placement strewn about the picture. Also, you'll notice above that I said, "there's some humor that works," with the keyword in that sentence being "some." A lot of the jokes will go over well with kids (see the "floss," farts, etc.) but I'm betting most adults will grow tired of that and the material that's supposed to be geared more towards them, namely the pop culture references. Again, it's imperfect, but I'm a bit surprised at how watchable, nay, enjoyable a lot of it ended up being.… Expand

I can never fault actors for the script. Jim Carey was Jim Carey, but I think he was close to what we should expect for Dr. Robotnik. Sonic was... okay.

Not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination but one that leaves you satisfied. Jim Carrey acts exactly how you would expect him to and it really works for the most part. That said, there are moments that made me crack a smile and even laugh out loud a handful of times. 90% of these good moments come from Jim Carrey. You can tell Carrey's having a lot of fun in this role. He definitely knows what this movie is and he fully embraces the eccentric mad scientist role of Robotnik, coming through with 0 cringe-inducing jokes, lines, or scenes. I cannot say the same for Sonic or James Marsden's cop character. If you plan on seeing this, you will need to fully turn off your brain to enjoy it. Characters regularly make decisions and statements that don't make any sense and Sonic% speed is underutilized at several points purely in service of the plot. In its defense, the movie absolutely does not ask to be taken seriously. Unfortunately that still doesn't stop huge logical inconsistencies from breaking the illusion and immersion of it all. Sonic The Hedgehog is a dumb fun romp that doesn't quite overstay its welcome.… Expand

I saw the SANIC movie in theaters... And I was pleasantly surprised! I was going in thinking this was going to be another cringey "Cartoon characters from my childhood are thrown into live action, modern society and (attempts at) hilarityI saw the SANIC movie in theaters... And I was pleasantly surprised! I was going in thinking this was going to be another cringey "Cartoon characters from my childhood are thrown into live action, modern society and (attempts at) hilarity ensue." Similar to "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "The Smurfs." And Sonic was KINDA like one of those movies, but it was by far the most well executed of that kind of film.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” has a bit more charm than the aforementioned movies and it’s a movie that both a veteran Sonic fan and a newcomer can enjoy! Jim Carrey was excellent as Doctor Robotnik, it felt like I was watching him in his wacky 90’s days! James Marsden was actually pretty funny, not to mention REALLY fun to look at!… Expand

The positives:
-The visual effects and everything were pretty good, including Sonic's more faithful redesign.
-Sonic and the rest of the cast are very entertaining, although clearly Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik are moreThe positives:

-Sonic and the rest of the cast are very entertaining, although clearly Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik are more interesting to me than the other characters (for obvious reasons).
-The origin story of Sonic adds something new to him that really makes you feel for him during both his best and worst moments throughout the adventure.

The negatives:
-Some characters either don't have a legitimate reason to be there or feel like they have too much going on. Carrey as Robotnik especially fits the latter, although I haven't seen much of Jim Carrey in a long while, so that may just be me.
-The plot, while still pretty decent, is just as cliched and predictable--if not rushed at times--as some critics have said. And very rarely, if ever at all, are the tropes involved played around with. This movie needed either an additional re-write or two, or at least been given a longer running time (not like Avengers: Endgame, but maybe more like the first Avengers).

Overall, this movie was a lot of fun for me. I'd say this is definitely worth seeing with the kids.… Expand

This film adaptation of Sega's most well-known video game franchise is firmly placed in "okay" ground; neither terrible nor amazing.

The plot here is that Sonic (who in the film looks mostly good, although his eyes are separated which is a letdown); an alien hedgehog who has the power of super speed, escapes to Earth for his own safety, then lives a solitary life. However, a series of events lead to him being discovered and pursued by the evil Dr. Robotnik, who wants to use his super speed powers. Thus, Sonic teams up with a cop to escape Robotnik and get back to safety.

First of all, I feel that putting Sonic on Earth was a missed opportunity plot-wise that makes the film as a whole seem rather generic and uninventive. A plot that saw him visiting more of the vibrant areas of the games would have made for a more interesting and engaging film. Instead, we're left with a rather generic "normal guy helps mischievous talking animal" story.

In addition to that, the film clearly sees children as its main audience. Plot developments are very predictable, and the injection of a specific current pop culture trend (not once, but twice) is in my opinion a bad move that will cause the film to age quickly.

However, there are good points. Robotnik is played very well, seeming faithful to the games while putting a new spin on the character. The use of rings as portals is a nice touch. Sonic's quips are generally funny. Emotional moments, while predictable, seem genuine.

Ultimately, this is fine to watch. It's not bad, but it's not particularly good either. Still, I think the Sonic franchise has more film potential, and I hope that's tapped into with a potential sequel.… Expand

We all thought Assassin Creed was going to destroy the curse of terrible video game adaptations, but this blue hedgehog sure did.

You know what stuck with me the most was how Sonic says he has watched the 1994 action movie 'Speed' loads of times, so does that mean he witnessed Dennis Hopper getting decapitated on endless repeat? Or how about Beth Grant being run over by a bus? Makes you think sometimes.

Anywhere...not a great movie, but man this could have been so much worst. I am glad the studios listened to fans and changed that revolting character design on Sonic. It is just too bad that the animates were laid off after the studio was closed. Yikes.

Jim Carry, even at the age of 58, has not lost that chaotic energy. Robotnik's dance scene was easily the highlight. What is more impressive is Carry improvised the dance scene and recommended the song "Where Evil Grows". James Marsden sure does love cgi animals. I guess this completes the trilogy. 'Enchanted', 'Hop', and now 'Sonic'. Still likable and talented though. So yeah, it's an average family adventure comedy that never failed to entertain. This is coming from a guy who is not a diehard fan of the character or game series, but still found some enjoyment out of it.… Expand

If you want a simple but entertaining film and imbued with nostalgia for those who ever played a Sonic game, well here's an option.

If you're looking for something else, you will not find it here and incidentally you're deceiving yourself.

Although it only remains to ask if the film had still worked with the public and the critics without the change of image that Sonic had. Because as far as I know there was no change in the story.

This movie is a ok kids movie. The problem I have is that I didn't find anything in it to be funny. The last trailer I seen made it look more like a comedy. None of the jokes I found funny at all. I honestly don't understand the massive hype surrounding this movie. It wasn't great or terrible. It was just kind of meh. I guess maybe I wasn't really in the prime demographic for this movie, as I am not a huge Sonic fan despite playing and enjoying some of the games. I think Sonic fans could get a kick out of it, but I'm not really sure since the movie had barely anything to do with the actual Sonic games. I'd recommend this movie to young children and big fans of the games, but not many others.… Expand

The rest of this film can be marked up to poorly veiled marketing (seriously, stop talking about the Olive Garden) and nonsense driven plot points. Without spoiling anything, in the trailer it reveals Sonic being able to be so fast that he can take the time to yawn and tap his foot when dozens of missiles are aimed directly at him yet he is able to be shot by a tranquilizer dart. Take that "logic" and apply it to the rest of the script and you'll understand what kind of writing we're dealing with.… Expand

Jim Carrey does pretty well, but the screenwriters tried way to hard to make his character "plausible" in the world, and all it did was distract from what makes Robotnik great. All his gadget have this kind of "realism" to them, which wasn't really welcome. This movie is made up of 3 elements that all work better on their own.
I don't really recommend this, it fails to deliver anything beyond what you'd expect from a Generic IconicCharacter Cash-Grab.… Expand

I finally got around to watching it, and I have very mixed opinions. Sonic is just really, really annoying- I expected something more like the Sonic Boom TV show Sonic. Instead, he's just annoying and not very likeable. The movie is very obviously aimed at kids, but there is some fan service in there and I can appreciate that. My favourite scene out of the entire movie has to be the bar fight scene, that was really funny. I really feel like the movie doesn't go into much detail about who Dr Robotnik actually is and his origin story. Or why Sonic refers to him as Eggman. There really isn't much substance storywise, which is why I hope we get a prequel or sequel as the post-credit scene hints at. Overall, major disappointment, but a pretty decent film for a video game movie.… Expand

I mean, at least they redid the VFX so it wasn't visually offensive. Just about every other department was lackluster, which was expected.
